Hello again everyone,
By this time of year, we would usually have several events under our belt. However, with our changing climate patterns, the club has increasingly had to cancel or postpone events. Unfortunately, both the Test and Tune in February and QRC 2 in March had to be cancelled or postponed due to rain.
To help address this, we ' ve made the decision to run two QRC rounds on the same weekend, August 23–24.
QRC 5 – the APX Suspension Imbil Rally will take place on Saturday
Thanks to Laurie Garth and Judy Foster, we were able to run a couple of non-competitive social runs this year, which provided some valuable engagement despite the weather setbacks.
As you ' re aware, running events is crucial, not just for our competitors but also to generate income, which allows us to pay bills, maintain and update club equipment, and continue operating. This ongoing pressure highlights the importance of delivering successful events.
QRC 2 – the APX Suspension Jimbil Rally (postponed from earlier in the year) will be held on Sunday
Both events will be single-heat Rally Sprints, featuring over 132 km of competitive stages across 10 sprint stages each day. This year, we’ll be operating out of Borumba Deer Park, just outside Imbil. The Deer Park offers excellent camping and facilities, and entries are filling fast so don’t delay, or you might miss out!
The one major event we were able to run earlier this year was the Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland. Although competitor numbers were slightly lower than in previous
years, the quality of the field more than made up for it. In addition to our regular ARC teams, we welcomed some high-profile names, Toby Price and Hayden Paddon, who attracted significant public interest.
I’ve been told that over 10,000 people attended Wheels on Mary on the Friday night, with a substantial increase in spectators at both Saturday and Sunday viewing points. I had the opportunity to attend a debrief with the Gympie Regional Council, alongside Brian Everitt and his team. While there are always improvements to be made, Mayor Glen Hartwig and his council were extremely pleased with the event and have offered their full support for an even better edition next year A massive thank you goes out to Brian Everitt, Malcolm Bartolo, and the entire team who made Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland such a resounding success. It has become a must-do event for both national and local competitors.
On a more somber note, I’d like to express our condolences to the family and friends of Ed Mulligan and Tony Best, who we sadly lost in the past months. Some of our longer-term members will also remember Norm Singleton, a former club member and competitor. Norm passed away just last week Our thoughts are with all families during this difficult time.
I hope to see you all in Imbil this August for what promises to be a fantastic weekend of rally action. Until then, goodbye for now.
Rallying is more than just the thrill of the throttle, the roar of the engine, and the stones, gravel and dust flying from beneath the wheels. It’s a family; a community built on passion, trust, and countless hours of dedication behind the scenes and right now, that community needs you.
Here in Queensland, we have bold hopes and dreams for the future of QLD rallying. There’s real momentum with plans for new events, fresh stages, and growing interest from the next generation of drivers and co-drivers. But without a strong team of officials to make it all happen, those ambitions remain just that: hopes and dreams.
That’s why we ’ re calling on our rally crews and supporters to step up and give back to the sport that’s given us all so much. We’re looking for the next wave of Clerk of the Courses (CoC), Deputy CoCs, Competitor Relations Officers (CROs), Scrutineers, Stage Commanders, and many other critical officials.
Keep the sport alive and thriving –Events can’t run without the right people in place. Your experience and knowledge from being on the stages are invaluable.
Grow your rally skillset – Learning the ropes of event organisation deepens your understanding of how rallies work from top to bottom. Shape the future – Bring your voice, your ideas, and your passion to the table. Help Queensland rallying evolve and improve.
Give back to the community – Every rally driver and co-driver owes a huge debt to the volunteers and officials who make it all happen. Now it’s your turn to be that hero for someone else.
You don’t have to have decades of experience or a trophy cabinet full of silverware. All you need is a love for the sport, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to seeing rallying in Queensland thrive. We’re especially encouraging current and former competitors to get involved. Your perspective and understanding of what makes a great rally are invaluable and rallying works best when the whole community is pulling in the same direction. Whether you ' re ready to dive into a major role or want to start small and learn alongside experienced officials, there's a place for you.
Make It Happen.
If you ’ re reading this, chances are you already care deeply about rallying. So let’s take that passion and turn it into action. The sport’s future depends on the next generation of leaders and organisers stepping forward.
Let’s work together to ensure Queensland remains a vibrant and exciting home for rallying. Let’s make sure every event has the structure, safety, and support it needs to succeed. Let’s build something amazing together. Ready to get involved? Reach out to your local organising club, Motorsport Australia, or any of our current rally organisers. We’ll help you get started, supported, and trained up. Rallying needs you. Let’s drive it forward.
Two hours from Brisbane, the Gympie region is surrounded by nature and wildlife that you can’t get anywhere else in Queensland.
The coloured sands of Rainbow Beach and the charming fishing town of Tin Can Bay are our coastal playgrounds and the southern gateway to K’gari (Fraser Island).
Away from the coast, you’ll find the pioneering heritage town of Gympie with elegant buildings and heritage railways. Out west, you’ll discover a beauty unmatched; the rolling hills of our western townships and the lush, fertile land of the Mary Valley.
There’s more to the Gympie region than you might imagine.
Marking the 350th round in Australian Rally Championship history, the 2025 Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland delivered all the thrills fans could ask for The 3rd round of the EROAD ARC hit the Gympie region once again and the high attrition rate meant there was no shortage of drama over the weekend
The Lead-up:
Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland started with an eventful testing morning on the Thursday before the event. ARC crews were mostly tidy and consistent throughout the morning; taking joyrides and testing setups. QRC crews were less lucky with three top contenders suffering issues The Subarus of Johnsson/Biggar and Bergmann/Hoey and the Celica of Badenoch/Fraser all required major mechanical repairs as a result of testing to be ready for the weekend’s event
Friday night saw the return of the ever popular Wheels on Mary street party
All crews and their cars lined Mary Street for a vibrant evening spectacle It's a fan favourite, giving supporters the chance to snap photos, collect autographs, and meet their rally heroes up close before the competition gets underway. It once again drew a strong crowd, with local rally fans turning out in force.
Reigning champions Harry Bates and Coral Taylor edged out Kiwi pair Hayden Paddon and John Kennard by a razor-thin three seconds to claim Heat 1. Their Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 was consistent across the day’s eight stages, while behind them, Alex Rullo and Steve Glenney secured third, though more than two minutes adrift. But the real story was the carnage: multiple crews fell victim to the rough terrain early on, including Peter Rullo, Stewart Reid, and ARC heavyweights Scott Pedder and Glenn Macneall, whose rollover in Kandanga ended their day Even 2024 Canberra winners Lewis Bates and BSCC member Anthony McLoughlin rolled out before Stage 4.
Sunday saw Hayden Paddon strike back, claiming five stage wins and cruising to a 42-second Heat 2 victory after Bates/Taylor suffered a puncture and later retired with suspension damage That DNF cost Bates dearly in the overall standings, dropping him to seventh for the weekend.
Paddon, now with a strong championship lead, admitted it was a tense day Lewis Bates and McLoughlin rebounded from their Day 1 troubles to take second on Sunday and fourth overall, while Rullo and Glenney’s consistency earned them their first outright podium of the season
Mitsubishi Evo 6 duo Clayton Hoy and Erin Kelly impressed all weekend, finishing third overall and dominating the WOLF Production Cup. In the Junior ranks, Jackson Long continued to shine, taking the ARC Junior Cup honours. Tony Sullens and Kaylie Newell (2WD Cup), and Molly Spalding with Matthew Dillon (4WD Classic Cup), also stood out among the special category winners Reflections, Gratitude and Looking Ahead:
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the officials, volunteers, and sponsors whose tireless efforts made the 2025 Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland a resounding success. Your dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm are the backbone of this event, ensuring everything runs smoothly from start to finish. The motorsport world mourned the loss of one of its most charismatic and enduring figures. Ed Mulligan, a rally driver, entrepreneur, and unapologetic character, passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 75 following a medical incident while driving. Just days earlier, he was behind the wheel at the Otago Classic Rally in New Zealand; a final, fitting act for a man who never slowed down.
Born on February 6, 1950, in the northwestern suburbs of Sydney, Ed showed ambition and independence from an early age. He saved diligently to buy and restore his first car, a Ford Model A, at just 15 years old. That early spark ignited a lifelong love affair with motoring.
Ed’s rallying career began in earnest with the 1970 Ampol Round Australia Trial, driving a Peugeot 404. From there, he launched into state-level rallies and the Southern Cross Rally, quickly establishing himself as a fearless competitor. His resume would grow to include an impressive array of cars including Datsuns, Mazdas, Escorts, Toranas, Subarus and strong results in both national and international events. He came heartbreakingly close to winning the ARC title outright in 1984, piloting a Mazda RX7.
Ed’s influence went far beyond what happened behind the wheel. In 1974, he and his wife Pam, whom he met at a rallycross meet, launched Opposite Lock, a motorsport accessories store that would grow into a national brand. It wasn’t just a business venture; it was an extension of his passion for motorsport and his belief in building community around it. In the early 1980s, concerned about the future of the New South Wales Rally Championship, Ed threw his energy and resources into reviving it. His vision helped secure television coverage and sponsor interest, breathing new life into the sport at a critical time.
Ed’s larger-than-life personality made him a standout in any room, or service park. He was a natural storyteller, a serial stirrer, and a generous friend. Despite his outward bravado, Ed had a deep sense of loyalty and compassion. He built strong, lasting friendships and quietly helped many people in the rally community behind the scenes. He never sought recognition for those efforts, he just did what he thought was right, usually with a grin and a sideways comment.
Over the decades, Ed drove countless legendary cars, including his beloved Ford V8-powered Opel Manta. However, more eople, the stories, and the sheer thrill of the
Ed Mulligan was a force; passionate, opinionated, tireless, and endlessly entertaining. He left his mark on rallying in every way possible: as a driver, a businessman, a promoter, and a friend. His passing is a huge loss to the motorsport world, but his legacy and the memories of his antics, achievements, and generosity will remain part of the rally community for years to come.
There are countless pages that could be written about the world’s fastest macadamia farmer, however from all of us here at the BSCC, we farewell a member and friend.

His dedication extended beyond club events; he and his partner Libby generously gave their time at every World Rally and ARC event, embodying the spirit of grassroots motorsport
The Brisbane Sporting Car Club (BSCC) community is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated and dependable volunteers, Allan Kruck, who passed away last week after a courageous six-month battle with cancer
For nearly three decades, Allan was a quiet but unwavering presence at BSCC events. He first joined the rally scene in the mid-1990s, volunteering alongside Keith and Marg Mackay. From there, his involvement deepened as he worked with Dave Martin on a stage team, and later became a core member of Team Echo, led by Mike and Larraine Verrall, for close to 20 years.
While Allan may have been quiet, his impact was loud and lasting He was the glue that helped bind a team together, always one step ahead, and always focused on doing the job right
Allan will be remembered for the friendships he built, the events he supported, and the countless volunteers and competitors who benefitted from his tireless work. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Rally in Peace, Allan.
