A QUICK GUIDE TO COLOUR TEMPERATURE

The colour temperature of a light source in a space can effect the people using that lighting whether it is to perform a task, relax or learn. For this reason, it is greatly important to choose the right colour temperature for a given application.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin and varies from warm, for a cosy atmosphere, to cool for a clean and modern look. Choosing a colour temperature is very subjective and each person has their own preference when looking to create the right ambiance.

No matter what space you’re lighting, it’s important to balance warm and cool temperatures. As a general rule, warmer temperatures are more calming, inviting, and relaxing, while cooler colour temperatures are often used to enhance concentration and focus in places like schools or offices.

If you’re trying to match or replace a specific colour temperature, it’s best to ignore the descriptive words and look at the kelvin number.

Warm White (2700K-3500K): Relaxing and Welcoming

DIMMING AND MOOD

Dimmer switches can set the perfect mood for each room in your house. If you are settling in for a movie night, you can dim the lights. Using dimmers in your home can create a romantic mood, a bright and happy mood, or a calm, relaxing mood. If you are with your family having a fun game night, you can brighten the lights to help brighten the activity. Brighter lights help increase the energy in the room, while dimmer lights initiate relaxation. Any mood is possible with dimmers.

Lighting controls come in three different types:

ROTARY DIMMERS

Use a manual dial to allow a homeowner to alter the lighting level by turning the dial. Some have push-button control to switch the light off while keeping the current setting in place.

TOUCH DIMMERS

CONSIDER THE CEILING HEIGHT

Recessed downlights are a great option for lower ceilings. When positioning downlights, measure a distance of about 60cm away from the edge of the walls; this will be your starting point. Leave even spaces between each downlight for a balanced lighting. As a rule of thumb, the space between each downlight should be half the height of the ceiling. For instance, if the ceiling height is 244cm, the downlights should be 122cm apart.
