NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY - The County's war on waste - reducing the amount of trash that gets buried in its landfill and ridding roads and public spaces of litter - is an ongoing effort. Dan Orr, education and communications co-ordinator for transportation, waste and facilities, reported on both fronts at County council's July 17 meeting. A record number of volunteers took part in this year's Mayors' Keep the County Clean Challenge, collecting 19,450 kilograms of litter and illegally dumped trash during the weeklong campaign, he said. Alnwick-Haldimand Township had the highest rate of participation, 7.3 per cent, with 503 of its 6,869 residents taking part. They collected the largest amount, 4,650 kilograms. Brighton had the fewest volunteers - just 111 of 11,844 residents accepted the challenge, or .9 per cent - but they were the hardest working, collecting 3,390 kilograms, or 30.5 kilograms per volunteer, the most on average by far, more than twice what Port

Hope's volunteers, who placed second, collected, 13.7 kilograms per person. Overall, 3.5 per cent of the County's 85,103 residents took part in the cleanup. This year's results continue a recent upward tick in the amount of litter being collected but it's still much less than the 25,000-plus kilograms collected annually the first two years the challenge was held. Also, there were 400 more volunteers who participated this year than in 2018. "Unfortunately ... littering still does happen," Orr said. "As long as there is going to be single use items and tossable products there's going to be litter out there." But if the County's seven member municipalities continue to have "a resident-driven volunteer program that helps address that issue ... it will continue to have a positive impact." Orr brought council up to date on the County's new Recycle Right and organics programs to divert more waste being sent to the landfill, and to increase the quality and value of recyclable materials available for resale.

COVERING THE COURTS IS A BLEND OF TEDIUM AND DRAMA COLUMNIST JEFF MITCHELL WRITES ABOUT HIS DAY TO DAY DEALINGS IN THE COURT SYSTEM

northumberlandnews.com

JEFF MITCHELL Column

It's about trust. Our relationship with our readers is built on transparency, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. This article is part of that project. Whenever someone asks me what it's like to report on the criminal courts, I'm tempted to offer the following analogy: Court reporting is a sea of tedium, interspersed with islets of real human drama. I may be overstating the part about the tedium. But anyone who has sat through a trial of any length knows they will hear testimony which, while necessary, is not especially scintillating. I've lost count of how many times I've listened to experts explain, at length, how cell towers work. And I remember, during a murder trial years ago, enduring a thorough dissertation on refrigeration systems for transport trucks. Then there are the delays. Many factors figure into the successful staging of a trial, and things go wrong. People get sick. Conflicts arise. There are innumerable potential pitfalls. I have found over the years, however, that most of the people involved - lawyers, court clerks, even

judges - are happy to help with clarification. Everyone acknowledges the importance of getting it right. Now for the drama part: Over three and a half decades in journalism I have heard and seen things in court that I quite simply will never forget. I have sat in packed courtrooms, heart literally pounding, as juries filed in to deliver long-awaited verdicts. I have seen people weep and scream and lie. I have seen a man, brought from jail to testify against his friend, tell a prosecutor to f--- off. And a man, just sentenced to life for murder, shrieking and clawing madly at the glass on the prisoner's dock, only to be subdued by guards as he tried to scramble, however improbably, to freedom. I have seen mothers weep for murdered sons, and brothers turn on brothers. I have seen a professional poker player, acquitted of murder on a finding of self-defence, walk through a courtroom door and into sunlight, free from bars and shackles for the first time in years. Canada's justice system is often assailed as being weak and not focused enough on long jail terms. My belief is that it is a system that attempts to balance the rights of all involved and arrive at resolutions based not on retribution, but real justice. And that experience has enhanced my appreciation and admiration for this country of ours. Jeff Mitchell is a court reporter for Durham/ Northumberland division of Torstar community brands. WHO WE ARE

THESE WOMEN WILL NEVER BE INVISIBLE COLUMNIST ALICIA VANDINE PRAISES THE WORK OF THE APPLE ROUTE GRANNIES ALICIA VANDINE Column

Today's culture is so obsessed with looking and acting young. Do we become less important to society or even become invisible as we age? It's hard to believe that only 200 years ago, many powdered their wigs grey in order to make themselves appear older and wiser. That's right, back then being older was hip. Nowadays, from hair dyes to wrinkle creams and surgical procedures, the race is on, particularly for women, to remain forever young to avoid becoming invisible. I was recently invited to a

meeting of the Apple Route Grannies. This is a group of area women, who will never be in danger of being invisible. These ladies live from Port Hope to Consecon. Together, with 240 other chapters across Canada, they support the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The foundation helps African Grandmothers and "Grand Others" (elders of villages), who take care of children whose parents have died due to HIV and AIDS. Now in their tenth year, this local group of ladies has raised more than $100,000 to

support these initiatives, thanks to the generosity of Brighton residents and their mainstays of Dare to Dine and Bridge Euchre Luncheons fundraisers. And they're not resting on their laurels. On Oct. 27, they are hosting an author night with Frances Itani, who is a fiction writer, poet, essayist and Member of the Order of Canada. RECYCLE RIGHT COMING SOON TO NORTHUMBERLAND Continued from page 1

Beginning Sept. 3, residents will be asked to place organic kitchen waste in a green bin, plastic, glass and metal containers into a blue bin, and paper materials and paper packaging into a grey bin. The goal is to increase the amount of household waste that's diverted from 40 per cent currently to 60 per cent of household waste. That will include decreasing the number of garbage bags accepted at curbside each week from three to two bags. The County has begun delivering the free bins, which contain brochures that provide instructions and information about what are acceptable materials for recycling. Residents can purchase addi-

tional bins for $6 at the County office at 555 Courthouse Road in Cobourg. Lids will also be available for sale. Orr said residents can continue to use the blue boxes they already have. For more information about Recycle Right, visit northumberland.ca/Recycle-Right. In presentations to municipal councils earlier this year, Adam McCue, the County's manager of planning and technical support for the transportation and waste management department, said the impact on waste diversion will be to have 2,000 to 3,000 fewer tonnes of food waste being sent to landfill annually, along with an additional 1,000 tonnes of recyclable materials that won't get buried.

THE ISSUE: RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP ENCOURAGES RECYCLING AND DISCOURAGES LITTERING TO PROTECT THE LAND AND KEEP IT CLEAN LOCAL IMPACT: NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY'S RESPONSE HAS BEEN TO MAKE CHANGES TO ITS WASTE SERVICES PROGRAMS AND TO HOST AN ANNUAL LITTER COLLECTION CAMPAIGN

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

The County has developed new diversion programs and the newspaper periodically reports on their roll-out.

POLICE LAY ASSAULT CHARGE CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP - Police charged a 26year-old man with assault after responding to a report of a domestic dispute in progress involving possible violence. Northumberland OPP said officers attended a home in Colborne shortly after 7 a.m. on July 17. A female victim injured in the assault was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police also laid a

charge of uttering threats and damaging property against the Cramahe Township man. No names were released to protect the identity of the victim. Police said there are people who continue to be abused by their partners each and every day, but they might be too afraid to ask for assistance. If you are being abused or know someone who is, there are agencies avail-

able that can help. The OPP can be reached at 1-888-310-1122 or 911 if it is an emergency situation. Peterborough/Northumberland Victim Services can be reached at 905372-2255 and will answer any questions surrounding partner abuse, as well as point to various resources that can help you take back control of your life, with counselling and safety planning.

In addition, many homeowners find the shorter length of a curved shaft trimmer is more convenient and useful for them to operate.
