It doubled in size, creating "a strong base of junior cadets that will take us into the future," commanding officer Capt. Robin Brooks said at the corps' annual ceremonial review held recently at the Trenton Cadet Training Centre. RCACC Brighton, one of 287 cadet corps and squadrons in Ontario, ended the year with 37 cadets ranging in age from 12 to 18. JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com BRIGHTON - Sam Hall won a gold medal and Jake Hollinger won two silver at the OFSAA track and field championships held in Guelph June 6-8. The pair were part of the 15-member contingent from East Northumberland Secondary School (ENSS) who made the trip to the University of Guelph's Alumni Stadium. Hall won senior boys high jump with a best jump of 2.06 metres and Hollinger placed second in both the senior boys 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre events, breaking a 23-year-old ENSS record with a time of 3:52.77 in the 1,500. His time in the 3000 metre was 8:35.23. Isaac Hollinger had a top-eight finish in the junior boys 800 m (2:04.68) and finished 12th in the

BRIGHTON - The municipality is working hard to win back the trust of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, after having aroused its ire over ammonia levels in Brighton's wastewater treatment system. Those levels have exceeded acceptable limits on numerous occasions in recent years and resulted in several charges being
laid by the provincial government for incidents of noncompliance. The municipality tried to remedy the problem with different approaches before settling on proprietary treatment technology known as MBBR (moving bed biofilm reactor), which uses specially designed media in a aerated tank, along with a filter. Last fall, council chose GHD Engineering to prepare a design that incorporates the technology into the existing system. In a report to council on June 10, director of public works and infrastructure Preston Parkinson said the project "will significantly reduce ammonia from the lagoon effluent" and put an end to
the municipality being in noncompliance. Brighton took another step Monday, by choosing a vendor that will supply the necessary wastewater equipment. World Water Works estimates the cost of the equipment and other services will be close to $1.2 million. Council agreed to spend $30,150 on a purchase order for shop drawings of the equipment and "process calculations," which Parkinson said will assist GHD Engineering in preparing a design report that will be part of the application for environmental compliance approval from the ministry. The municipality has

"How quickly we get going is really dependent on how long that review is," he said.

OPG GENERATES GOOD NEWS FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY It was a banner day of good economic news for Durham Region on June 10, with the announcement that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) will be moving its corporate headquarters to Clarington. All of OPG's non-station staff - from corporate employees to engineers - in Toronto, Niagara and across Durham Region will be relocated to the new Clarington campus. The new headquarters will be built next to the existing Darlington Energy Complex on Energy Drive in Courtice. Best of all, the new OPG headquarters, when completed, will bring 2,000 well-paying jobs to Clarington. The new OPG headquarters will be part of an innovation campus that includes the existing Darlington Energy Complex and a cutting-edge OPG training centre, which includes a full-scale nuclear reactor mock-up. The new campus will bring together expertise, enhancing collaboration and innovation. As expected, OPG's announcement drew rave reviews from across the political spectrum, with Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster saying he was "delighted" with the news and the municipality is on board as a willing host to OPG's goal to consolidate its corporate operations in Clarington. Meanwhile, Durham Regional Chair John Henry said what OPG has accomplished in Durham since coming to Clarington in 1990 has been "simply amazing" and it's "exciting" to have OPG build its centre of excellence in Durham. Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, who's the president of the Treasury Board, applauded OPG for attempting to provide savings to Ontario taxpayers, which could add up to millions of dollars in the long run. For its part, OPG says amalgamating staff from its 15 leased properties into one central headquarters will result in cost savings, even when the cost of the new building expected to begin construction in 2020-21 and be completed by 2024 - is factored in. Currently, OPG leases more than one-million-square-feet of office space and spends $26 million in rent each year. It's not only the huge number of well-paying jobs that will set up shop in Durham, it's all the residual spinoff benefits that will add to the economic activity in Clarington and also Durham. Presumably, a large number of these workers will need homes within the region, and that can only be a net benefit to the area. And, with the sheer numbers of jobs coming to Clarington, it's possible there is a spillover amount of economic activity in neighbouring Northumberland County as a result of OPG's consolidation. With the OPG headquarters and jobs moving east into Durham, it certainly bolsters the argument that the GO east extension into Bowmanville needs to be green-lighted now in order for the service to be available when the new headquarters is built and operational. And, the OPG headquarters news is also good for Durham's institutions of higher learning as there will also be opportunities to make space for partnerships with other energy industry experts and local post-secondary schools like Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University. After the doom and gloom of General Motors' impending shutdown of its Oshawa plant this year, this good economic news has come along at a good time and is more than welcomed in Durham Region.

These days social media makes our lives a lot more connected. Living in a small town also connects you with a lot of people. Your circle of people you know is pretty large even if you stay out of the mix. Lately I've been thinking about the people we lose along our paths. The people that are no longer a part of our scheme and our process. Every time someone in your group passes (no matter how aged they are), it has a ripple effect in
our lives. Grief is something that you can't control and is a process that never ends. It does get a little easier to cope with a big loss over time. It is also said that comedy is time plus tragedy. Not to make light of the situation but if you have the ability to laugh in the face of deep discomfort and mental torture you can deal with most anything. Grief and loss can subside with a touch of patient comedy. Finding the things about that person that is no longer with you that make you smile instead of letting the situation grind you down to your core. Crying is a wonderfully cathartic experience most every time you experience it. You feel pretty good after wholesome teardrops run down your face. It is also pretty neat to have a place to remember that person. A cemetery, a dock by a lake, a clearing in a forest, a memorial
where they passed. It is also a blessing when you are given signs that their consciousness is still a part of your life. You see a certain rare bird, come across something they would have loved when shopping, notice that song on the radio, remember a really cool date on the calendar. Strength is something that is a lot more than physical and a lot of people don't realize how much of it they have until they are tested. When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. A public library looking to raise money is holding a silent auction shh! - and two acclaimed Canadian authors are contributing their talents to ensure its success. One, Jane Urquhart, will be speaking on How I Found My Voice, at the Colborne Public Library's fundraising event June 23, and the other, Margaret Atwood, has donated three signed copies of her books for the auction. And Urquhart's husband, artist Tony Urquhart, a winner of a Governor General's Award for the visual arts and a member of the Order of Cana-
da, has donated an ink, gouache and watercolour sketch, of Morning Trees, Early Winter, Cramahe Township 1998. The fundraiser will take place at the Church, 1 Church St., starting at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door, at the library and online via cramahelibrary.ca. Library CEO Mary Norton said Jane Urquhart mentioned the fundraiser to Atwood, who immediately volunteered her support, saying, "Small libraries are wonderful." People have asked for details about Jane Urquhart's choice of subject for her talk and her response is, "It's all part of
the mystery" that will be revealed at the fundraiser, Norton said, laughing. "She's been a wonderful support to the library and (is) a member." Norton said it's "pretty phenomenal" that Tony Urquhart has donated his painting, valued at more than $1,000. Two of the Atwood books are versions of The Handmaid's Tale, which earned her The Arthur C. Clarke Award for best science fiction; the other is War Bears, her latest graphic novel, released earlier this year. The library has set a fundraising goal of $25,000, for the purchase of furnishings, shelving and computers. They're necessary with the library's expansion and renovations currently underway. "If we got a little over, it wouldn't hurt," Norton
said, because additional costs have come to light since the target was set. The Rotary clubs of Colborne and Cobourg have each donated $5,000, and there have been numerous personal donations. "It's wonderful that we have such a supportive community," library assistant Sarah Toyne said.

2 BODIES FOUND IN SUBMERGED CAR DEATH INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING, AND IDENTITIES ARE STILL UNKNOWN, SAY POLICE BRIGHTON - An investigation is continuing after police say two bodies were found in a submerged vehicle in the Murray Canal area June 17. Just after 8 p.m. the Northumberland OPP issued a release saying police are currently conducting a death investigation after finding the vehicle submerged in the water and with it, two bodies. The vehicle was found west of the Murray Canal swing bridge along the TrentSevern Waterway at about 10:15 a.m. on June 17. "Two bodies were located within the submerged vehicle," said police. The Northumberland OPP crime unit is continuing its investigation with assistance from the underwater search and recovery unit, the marine unit, technical traffic collision investigators and the central region forensic identification services.

Brooks said three-quarters of the cadets will spend two to seven weeks at summer training. Two - Jamie Thornton and Brittany Pennington - will travel to Alberta to take part in a leadership and challenge course at the Rocky Mountain Training Centre, while a third, Jeremy Kearney, will be heading to Whitehorse - a first for the corps - where he will attend a summer training centre. The corps bade farewell to five cadets graduating from the program: Jonathan Powers, Zachery Syganiec and three members of the Pennington family - Brittany, Brendan and Sarah. "I truly believe that the training they have received as cadets will be a strong base for them to start their next life chapters," Brooks said. "I have enjoyed watching them grow before my eyes ... but I am sad to see them go. All of them have achieved so much during their time as an army cadet in Brighton and they have put our corps on the map." Reviewing officer Maj. Christopher Nobrega, deputy commanding officer of
the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre at CFB Trenton, said his time as a cadet gave him a chance to see Canada and to do things he wouldn't have done otherwise, such as rappelling, canoeing and skiing. Nobrega told those headed off to summer training camp to "embrace that opportunity ... the experience and the adventure." "It will allow you a chance to spread your wings and develop yourself," he said. Nobrega thanked the cadet instructor cadre for their efforts in helping to raise young people to become "responsible citizens" and "Canada's leaders of tomorrow." Retired Brig.-Gen. Ian Douglas, the cadet liaison officer for Royal Canadian Legion Brighton Branch 100 in Brighton, the corps' sponsor, said the cadets "will be well served by the experiences they have had in this corps." Twenty of the cadets headed to Alberta two days after the parade for a nine-day tour of the province that included a visit to Ex Coelis Mountain on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The mountain was named in honour of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and means "out of the clouds." The corps raised more than $20,000 to pay for the trip.

LIBRARY CLOSING FOR RENOVATIONS CASTLETON LIBRARY INCREASING HOURS DURING RENOS JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com COLBORNE - The library will be closed for the month of July and part of August while work on its renovations continues. Not to worry. Beginning July 2, the Castleton library will increase its hours from 13 to almost 40 a week. More than 25,000 items in the Colborne Public Library are in the process of being moved out with the help of patrons, who have agreed to store many of the books for the summer. "We're very, very grateful," library assistant Sarah Toyne said. Those they don't take
will be kept in large containers that sit outside the library. All new books, DVDs and magazines will be going to the Castleton library. "It is going to be a little bit of an inconvenience but when it's all said and done, hopefully, everyone will see that it's definitely worth it," Toyne said. "It might be a little more difficult (to get what people are looking for) but we'll try our best." The Ontario Trillium Foundation has provided a grant of $150,000 to the expansion project. The total cost is roughly $346,000, with Cramahe Township committed to covering the balance. Toyne said seating is currently limited in the library but that will increase with the addition at the back of the building that will house the new pro-
gram room. It's needed, Toyne said, because library programs are continually growing. The library staff's office is being relocated, as are the junior and young adult fiction areas, part of which will also act as a study room for teens. Barrier-free doors will be installed at the entrance. Most of the library's programs and workshops, along with a teen drop-in, will take place at Castleton, while kid's games and a Lego drop-in will be held at the Keeler Centre. AKSAMIT, Jadwiga Maria “Harriet” passed away at the Trenton Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Her loving husband and forever soulmate, Walter, was at her side as were her daughter, Christina, and son-in-law, Tom. Harriet Aksamit of Brighton was born in Poland to the late Franciszek Czulo and Tekla Supronowicz. Her memory will be cherished by her children Christina (Tom) Baker, Alicia (Scott) Thornton, and Walter Jr as well as her siblings Frank (Betty) Czulo, Maria (Joseph) Bak, sisters-in-law Janina Czulo and Eugenia (Stanley) Flondro. Nanny “Babcia” will always hold a special place in the hearts of her eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Aunt “Ciocia Jadzia” will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and their children. She now joins her predeceased siblings Stanislaw, Tadeusz and Michael Czulo, and Helena Brazda Mofina (Ignacy Brazda and Stan Mofina). After retiring from Scanlon’s Pharmacy, Harriet kept busy as a volunteer at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Applefest Lodge and Brighton Clothing Depot. Harriet held executive positions with the Catholic Women’s League, and she and Walter were two of the founding members of Quinte Polonia. Her spirit will continue to live on with the many children throughout the world who have been warmed by her hand-knit sweaters. Whenever you take the time to “stop and smell the roses”, think of Harriet and her love of St Therese of the Little Flower. A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation with interment at the Codrington Roman Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Association will be greatly appreciated by the family.
