Boss of Royal Sussex has apologised to patients by Bex Bastable

The Royal Sussex County Hospital has been slammed by health watchdogs for ‘putting patients at risk’. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has told the Brighton and Sussex University Hospital Trust (BSUH), which runs the Royal Sussex and the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath, that it must improve.

Dr Gillian Fairfield, interim boss of the trust, has apologised for letting down ‘patients, their relatives and our local communities’. “The priority now is to do everything we can to put matters right and ensure that our patients receive the safe and high quality care that they deserve and have a right to expect,” she said, adding that the Trust had ‘taken action’ to address concerns. A nationwide search to find Britain’s best beach hut has been whittled down to a top 10 – with two from Hove making the shortlist. Hut 279, pictured, owned by the Grace Eyre Foundation, and The Boho Hut, owned by Jessica Christie-Miller, have a chance of being Towergate’s Beach Hut of the Year 2016. A judging panel consisting of TV’s Phil Spencer and the public vote will choose a winner. See www.towergateinsurance. co.uk/home-and-property-insurance/beach-hut-of-the-year. Hanover parking consultation to be discussed

Artist’s impression of how the tower will look once finished

Protest planned over i360 wages Angelika Rusbridge

news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy

A new Brighton landmark is at the centre of an employee wage row. The British Airways i360 has come under fire from trade union GMB for not providing a Living Wage to employees working for subcontractors. Mark Turner, GMB Brighton branch secretary, said: “We find it absolutely astounding as they have now signed up to the Living Wage in Brighton and Hove, but they are not insisting that sub-contractors pay the wage as well. “We are in the process of drawing up a number of dates in order to organise demonstrations in front of the i360 over the next coming months.” The BA i360 has pledged to examine how sub-contracted

staff can be assured the same Living Wage. Eleanor Harris, CEO of British Airways i360, said: “British Airways i360 will be directly employing approximately 60 full time and around 20 part time staff and they will all be paid at least the Living Wage. “We are very proud to commit to pay at least the Living Wage to all our employees and this includes young people who are recent school or college leavers.” The Brighton and Hove Living Wage is separate to the National Living Wage, though both require employers to pay staff a minimum £8.25. According to a representative of the Living Wage Foundation, to receive national accreditation companies must put a scheme in place to assure that third-party employees have an agreed plan to assure the Living Wage is rolled out

across their contracts over time, which is not the case for the Brighton and Hove Living Wage. Warren Morgan, Labour council leader, said: “The BA i360 pledged 18 months ago to pay its staff the Living Wage of £8.25 an hour, and I’m pleased they are honouring that commitment with their 80 directly employed staff. “They are amongst the first in the tourism sector to do so, but like most in the catering and hospitality sector, their restaurant provider Heritage Portfolio won’t be paying the Brighton and Hove Living Wage. “We’ve backed the Brighton and Hove Living Wage campaign since the start, and it is important that as many employers as possible across all sectors are encouraged to pay their staff a wage that enables them to live in the city and play a full part in our local economy.”

Appeal to 1984 bombing rescuers Paramedics, firefighters and police who saved lives at the scene of the Brighton IRA bombing in 1984 could have been exposed to deadly asbestos fibres. Sussex Police is working with ambulance and fire colleagues to trace those who dealt with the aftermath at the Grand Hotel. Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said, “We are trying to identify and inform emergency service colleagues and others who may have been exposed

to asbestos fibres to offer medical advice and support. “I understand that on hearing this news people may be anxious as to whether they have been exposed to asbestos and concerned about the possible effects on their health. “I would like to emphasise that the possibility that they have been affected is very small but I feel it is the right thing to pass this information on. “We are sending letters to a number of partner

agencies including the city council, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital NHS Trust and Conservative Party members as well as local hotels and businesses. “This will let them know that their staff may have been affected at that time and tell what we are doing to support our own officers who may be concerned about the possible effects on their health.” Sussex Police is offering its officers health information and support.

Proposals for a residents’ parking scheme in the Hanover, Elm Grove and Craven Vale areas of Brighton will be discussed by councillors next Tuesday (June 28). Initial consultation with nearly 8,000 residents and businesses resulted in more than half (56.4%) voting in favour of having a scheme, with 43.6% against. The response rate was 36%. Councillors at the environment, transport and sustainability committee are recommended to go ahead with consultation later in the year on detailed plans for a residents’ parking scheme which would include several options: a seven day a week or Monday to Friday operation either from 9am to 8pm or a ‘light touch’ scheme to be in force for two periods during the day. In the Craven Vale area residents could choose to be part of the neighbouring

‘light touch’ scheme or be part of a full scheme, either Monday to Sunday or Monday to Friday. Gill Mitchell, chair of the committee, said: “We’ve been looking at a possible parking scheme for this area at the request of people living across the whole area of Hanover, Elm Grove and Craven Vale and we appreciate the contributions of all the residents and businesses that took the time to express their views. “We are now proposing a second consultation on the detailed designs of a scheme along with options for enforcement and operating times. “During this consultation peoplewillbeabletorespond to the detailed design with the added knowledge of the road by road layout. It’s also an opportunity to tell us about alternatives and put forward suggestions for other types of scheme.”

IN BRIEF

Proposal to help tidy the streets Caravans, trailers and other engineless vehicles left stored on roads or pavements in the city could be removed under a new council policy. Councillors are set to approve the change to help tidy the streets and free up parking spaces. It would entail the council invoking already-available powers under the Highways Act 1980. In a survey 82 per cent of respondents said they support action being taken. The environment committee receives the report June 28.

More rail strikes as guards protest cuts Angelika Rusbridge

news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy

Rail conductors gathered at Brighton station on Tuesday morning for the third strike by RMT in a dispute with Govia Thameslink. RMT workers were on strike to protest against changes to conductor roles, which they say could see the loss of up to 400 guard positions. According to the RMT, the introduction of driver-only operated trains on services through Surrey and Sussex could result in the loss of the jobs, but said its main concern is for passenger safety. Mick Cash, general secretary of RMT, said: “Getting rid of these guards takes away the ability for them to look after passengers. “The disabled, the elderly, parents and children, those who are harassed late at

Union members on strike

night on the train, who may have no one else around to take notice of threatening behaviour or help. “I think the whole service is in chaos, it’s been overseen with mismanagement at any cost for any reason, and they’re not looking after passengers or the industry. “Our members were here before Govia and they will be here when they’re gone, I think they need to remember that, respect that.”

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has responded to the union’s claims, saying RMT boss Mick Lynch confirmed jobs were not at risk after his assertion on the Today Programme that ‘they’ve been offered jobs as alternatives’. The rail operator said the Rail Safety and Standards Board confirmed there would be ‘no increased safety risk’, and refute RMT claims, stating there are possibly safety benefits, as there could no longer be miscommunication between drivers and guards. A GTR spokesperson said: “The RMT has now accepted that jobs are not at risk, and the RSSB has nailed their bogus safety claims. Given this, passengers are bound to conclude that this strike is about nothing more than the RMT asserting their power to bring the railway to a standstill. “Enough is enough, this strike should be the last.”

There is growing discontent over the disruption to Southern services as a second passenger demonstration took place at Brighton station on Monday. Commuters vented their frustration over months of delays and cancellations to train services. This follows a similar protest in Brighton last week. Summer Dean, who organised the second demonstration, said: “The disruption across the Southern Rail network is now out of control.”

Pay for parking with a contactless card Parking machines in Brighton and Hove could switch to pay-by-card by next year - with chip-and-pin and contactless payment. It is part of a £1.8 million project that would see around 650 of the city’s parking machines scrapped and replaced. The move is in response to a new 12-sided pound coin being introduced next year, which means the parking machines would have to be

Hove seafront: homes in the city are too expensive says BHT boss

Homes are ‘out of reach’ for ordinary people in city Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

The boss of a homeless charity warned that home ownership and renting in Brighton and Hove is beyond the means of most people – with the under 35s hit the hardest. Andy Winter, chief executive of Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), said a combination of high house prices, rocketing rents, and government policy, has made homes unobtainable for under 35s. He said that the government’s Help to Buy ISA is irrelevant in areas with high housing costs like Brighton and Hove, as very few properties are for sale below the £250,000 cap. Mr Winter said: “The average one bed flat in Brighton and Hove is £240,000. What hope is there for any household with a child who need something larger? The average two-bed house is £408,252, the average two-bed flat is £338,598.” The government’s Starter Homes initiative is equally ineffective in Brighton and Hove, Mr Winter claimed. Starter Homes allow discounts for homes in new developments for first time

buyers but he said people need an income of £60,000 to £70,000 to afford most new homes in the city. He said: “This initiative is costing £4.1 billion and is doing next to nothing to alleviate the housing crisis, does nothing for people in the private rented sector, does not address the obscenity that sees people sleeping rough on the streets, and does nothing for the 23,000 people on the housing waiting list in Brighton and Hove.” Mr Winter warned that measures, due to come in from April 2018 will further add to the crisis. Rents in social housing will be capped to the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) – less than one per cent of private sector homes in Brighton and Hove fall within LHA levels. The BHT boss said: “We will soon be seeing an increase in shared rooms, with total strangers renting beds rather than their own room. We are turning the clock back to the bygone age, one that I never thought we would see again. There will be an ever increasing number of people sleeping rough over the next five to 10 years and an increase in the number of people living in overcrowded housing.”

converted anyway. A council spokesperson said: “Buying machines which take the new coin and accept vehicle numbers would cost £2.5 million. “It would take over 12 years to recoup this cost through savings, by which time the machines would be obsolete. “By contrast, costs of installing mostly pay-by-card machines would be £1.5m.” Under the council’s plans, drivers will still be able to

pay for parking in cash at the city’s 150 PayPoint outlets, but not at the machines. A report to the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, which meets next week to discuss changes to parking, said around 40 per cent of parking payments in Brighton and Hove are currently made by phone, and more than 95 per cent of people now use a bank card. Cllr Gill Mitchell, chair of

COMPOSITE DOOR

the committee, said: “The change to new coinage next year and the pressing need to replace our old on-street machines has enabled us to consider a better system. This change will give us newer, more reliable and user-friendly machines, while maintaining the ability to pay in cash on street and at PayPoint outlets.” A report recommending the change is going before the committee on Tuesday.

A hidden gem tucked away on a Hove street

O

ne day when walking into work I stumbled across a lovely little road in Hove. Richardson Road has nearly everything you would ever need on it including a butcher, fish monger, off licence and baker. This was a great discovery and something that I have always loved about working and living in Brighton and Hove; there is always another hidden gem round a corner somewhere. One resident of Richardson Road is Drury’s coffee house, where I spent a surprisingly sunny lunch time recently. Drury’s coffee originated in London in 1936 and was started by three Italian brothers. The branch situated in Hove is also a family affair, having been owned by members of the Davids and Lewis family for the last 14 years. The current owners, Elaine and Stephen, took over the premises eight years ago running both the café, wholesale distribution and a machine showroom from the one building. When you initially step through the door there is a distinctly traditional feel to the interior with the wholesale counter and wall of Drury’s produce immediately in front of you. The rest of the café is spacious and a traditional coffee house feel remains. On the day I visited the customers represented a decent cross-section of the local community with people from all walks of life in attendance. I order an Americano at the counter from the wide selection of teas and coffees and go for a New Yorkstyle bagel for my lunch. There is a wide selection of sandwich fillings all of which can be presented as a sandwich, baguette or bagel. There is also a variety of cakes and bakes should you be after something a little sweeter. Given the unusually bright weather I take my place at one of the many outside tables and join the good people in Hove in watching the world go by. After a brief wait my coffee and then my bagel arrive.

Both are of a good standard; the bagel has a welcome amount of pastrami and pickles with the all important mustard kick; the coffee is smooth without being overly strong, which is good for me as I am only an

occasional coffee drinker. I enjoy my time sitting in the sunshine contemplating some things I have to do later and making some notes in my to do list. I chat with Elaine for a while about their business and how it came about; she clearly enjoys her work and being a part of the local community. It is a great spot to be in and Elaine is proud of what they are doing; even if there are challenges in being a small business in the age of the multi-nationals. Before I took my leave Elaine offered me a piece of cake.

Road and Drury’s. In the space of one road you can pick up everything you need for a weekend meal and then stop off for some light refreshments before heading home. Surely that is one of life’s most simple pleasures. You can find the same fresh produce and products at Drury Coffee’s second shop located at 197 Church Road, Hove. This location is easily accessible and perfect for business meetings.

I had originally planned to skip dessert as had a big dinner planned that evening; my gluttonous self felt otherwise, and I was glad that it did. I opted for a home made chocolate brownie and was given a moreish and moist slice of deliciousness. Few things in life are as satisfying on such a base level as a well-made brownie and this is what I got. I was so busy having a “moment” with my cake that I completely forgot why I was there and did not get a picture. If you are not already familiar with this little spot in Hove I would recommend taking a trip to Richardson

The Royal Sussex County Hospital

Hospital told it must improve

Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

The trust that runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton has been issued with a warning by health watchdogs. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) told the Brighton and Sussex University Hospital Trust (BSUH) it must improve, following an inspection in April which found patients were being put at risk. The trust, which also runs the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, was told it was putting patients at risk, and the CQC highlighted three areas for improvement. It said patients were not

being dealt with properly or in appropriate areas, that there were ineffective systems in place to ensure the care, privacy and dignity of patients, and the trust had been failing to ensure patients were seen in line with national timescales for diagnosis and treatment. Professor Edward Baker, deputy chief inspector of hospitals, said: “Throughout our inspection we found that patients were not receiving the quality of care that they are entitled to expect, or within the timescales required. There is limited evidence to show these issues were being addressed at board level. We have told the trust they must improve and treat patients in a timely

manner with care, dignity and respect. We have given the trust until the August 30 to address these immediate concerns. We will continue to monitor the trust closely, and will be returning in the near future to check that the trust has got an improved grip on these immediate issues.” Fran McCabe, chair of Healthwatch Brighton and Hove, said: “We will know more when the full CQC Inspection report is published but it is clear they are concerned about the quality of care and patient safety at these hospitals. We know that BSUH is taking action to address these issues.Clearlyimprovements need to be made.”

Rapid improvement needed The interim boss of BSUH has apologised to patients after the CQC’s warning. Dr Gillian Fairfield, interim chief executive of BSUH, said: “We are very sorry that we have let down our patients, their relatives and our local communities. The priority now is to do everything we can to put matters right and ensure that our patients receive the safe and high quality care that they deserve and have a right to expect. The CQC warning notice makes difficult reading and over the past ten weeks since my

arrival here there have been a number of changes both at executive and non-executive board level and importantly changes to how we deliver care for our patients. We are working hard and closely with our partners on delivering an improvement plan designed to address the CQC’s concerns and have taken action on the most immediate concerns since the April visit. “It is a matter of public record that we are operating under difficult conditions with many old buildings that are difficult to maintain but

this is no excuse. Whatever the constraints, we need to ensure that our patients receive safe, high quality care that fully respects their privacy and dignity.” Antony Kildare, acting chair of BSUH, said: “We take the CQC feedback very seriously indeed. The CQC’s full report will be published later in the summer and when it is we will offer the public a full account of what we are doing to put things rightandwhatprogresswe’ve made. Until then our entire focus is on the achievement of rapid improvement.”

City Plan: Have your say on development Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

Residents and businesses will get a chance to have their say on future developments in Brighton and Hove as part two of the City Plan gets underway. The City Plan sets out the council’s policy and strategy for growth in the city over the next decade and beyond, and will set out how the city will deliver the 13,200 homes needed by 2030. A citywide consultation on the second part of the City Plan, which identifies development sites, begins on June 30. It follows on from the recently adopted City Plan Part One which set out the over-arching planning strategy for accommodating growth in the city. Councillor Julie Cattell, lead member for planning strategy, said: “This first part of the consultation is to gauge people’s views

about the scope of the document, whether there are any particular issues that people consider important to be addressed by planning policies and a ‘call for sites’. It’s important that people take part because their contributions will feed into the draft City Plan Part Two that will be published next year. “We have not identified specific sites at this stage but people can put forward sites for inclusion. City Plan Part Two will provide greater certainty and include local policies to address local issues such as how to secure family-sizedhousingandhow best to address the further demand for purpose built student accommodation. Sites put forward during this consultation stage will be assessed by the council as part of preparing the draft Plan and will be subject to further consultation.” The initial round of consultation will be asking

people what planning matters they think should be included in the City Plan, from how to make sure housing sites deliver a good mix of housing; how best to manage the range of retail uses in shopping centres so they remain attractive places to shop and visit; or to how to ensure new development helps create well designed places. It will be asking people if they have sites they wish the council to consider allocating for development in the Plan. City Plan Part Two will take around three years to complete. The first consultation will run for 12 weeks. To take part in the consultation, visit: www. b r i g h t o n - h o v e . g o v.u k / cityplan-part2 or write to City Plan Part 2, Scoping Document Planning Policy, Brighton and Hove City Council, Room 201, Kings House, Grand Avenue, Hove, BN3 2LS.

Topping g out ceremony Homes for older people in Brighton

Brighton and Hove councillors took part in a ‘topping out’ ceremony at the council’s new Brooke Mead extra care housing scheme in Albion Street, Brighton on Friday. The ceremony marked the completion of the top storey of the concrete frame of the development of 45 flats and community facilities. Brooke Mead will provide 24 hour on site care and support for older people and those suffering from dementia when it is completed in summer 2017.

Campaign to hold meeting on academies

Top place to live is Hove, actually

Ananti-academycampaign group is to hold a meeting to discuss ‘What’s best for our children’. The Hands Off Our Schools meeting will be held on Thursday at Friends Meeting House from 7pm. Speakers will include school governors, campaigners, and the president of the National Union of Teachers (NUT). A spokesperson for the campaign said: “It is very clear that the national policies to force schools to become academies while persisting with chaotic and harmful SATs and cutting school funding are still very much in place. The campaign must continue.”

Hove has been named as the most desirable place for young professionals to buy a home in the country for the second year running. Brighton was seventh on the list of locations attracting working 25 to 44-year-olds. Lloyd’s Bank, which carried out the research, said factors include the diverse population, the availability of music venues, theatres, independent shops, bars and restaurants, and the fact that it is under 70 minutes train ride to London. It said the average house price in Hove was £352,718, while in Brighton it is £358,821.

Virtual reality to broaden horizons Students from Moulsecoomb Primary School were taken on a tour from Brighton to Brazil in what was the UK’s first ever virtual reality lesson outside of the classroom. Brighton digital agency Propellernet and virtual reality experts yellowBird partnered up to create a geography lesson for the 25 students in Year 1 on Friday.

Nikki Gatenby, managing director of Brighton-based Propellernet, said: “There are many children in the city who have never been taken to the seaside despite living moments from the beach – we want to change that and engage children in this magical city, but also broaden their horizons and take a journey further afield.”

Party picks candidate for July by-election

MPs set up cross-party group on train chaos

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, chair of the Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party, is to stand as a candidate in next month’s East Brighton by-election. This follows the announcement by Cllr Maggie Barradell that she would be stepping down due to family reasons. Mr Russell-Moyle said: “I am delighted to have been selected in the ward I live. East Brighton is one of the most diverse wards in the city and it would be a privilege to be elected to represent residents.”

‘Misery’ for passengers using Southern services has led two Sussex MPs to establish a cross-party group to scrutinise the rail operator’s performance. Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, and Sir Nicholas Soames, Conservative MP for Mid Sussex, are set to joint chair an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) ‘in the hope of offering focussed, ongoing, and robust scrutiny of Southern’s operation and offer passengers the fierce advocacy they so desperately need’.

A Week in the City City pays tribute to MP Jo Cox A vigil took place in Brighton on Friday to remember the life of Jo Cox, the Labour MP who was killed in an attack in her Yorkshire constituency last week. A service was held at St Nicholas Church in Dyke Road, and attended by local politicians and residents. Peter Kyle, Labour MP for Hove, paid a moving tribute to his friend and colleague. He said: “She was effervescent, maternal, driven, and huge fun. “I wish people could see more of the softer side of politics. Jo was everything I believe an MP should be: values driven, hard working,

funny, but above all extremely caring. She had all this by the bucket load. “I hope this desperate, heartbreaking moment can give us the chance to stop, to reflect about who we are as a nation and who we want to be.” Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: “She was a formidable MP who stood up for what she believed in.” Phelim Mac Cafferty, convenor of the Green Group on the city council, delivered flowers to Peter Kyle’s constituency office, on behalf of Caroline Lucas and the local Green Party.

‘Invalid’ status for Patcham proposal raises concerns Angelika Rusbridge

www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy

A controversial plan for retirement homes in Patchamwasdeemed‘invalid’ by the council, raising new concerns for objectors. The Old London Road site was subject to criticism by residents before the application was submitted to planners, following a meeting of more than 150 Patcham residents in early May. Cllr Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservatives on the council, spoke out against the plans. The application was received by the council at the end of May, and has recently been deemed ‘invalid’, as developers failed to include elevations to scale to compare with existing buildings, and to annotate the site plan with a North point. Alistair Elliott, from Protect Patcham, said: “There are different reasons

Residents and Protect Patcham are unhappy with the plans

people are upset about this, from the size of it, to the impact on flooding, the trees, traffic and parking. “There’s also no pavement on that side of the road so if residents of the new development want to get to the hairdressers or the grocery, it’ll be difficult.” “Nobody feels any less upset about it now, apart maybe from the people who are selling their houses, but I have never talked to any one

who is for it. Hopefully it’s enough to think that they will just go away, that they’ve got the message that this doesn’t make anyone feel differently.” Members of Protect Patcham also cite a history of poor planning applications for the site as grounds for concern, as the company ‘have a history’ with the site. The company made two applications for the site, one in August 2003 and another in November 2004, and both

were refused by planners and subsequently at appeal - for reasons including poor quality of detailed design, failure to demonstrate how it would meet sustainability objectives, and lack of provision for affordable housing. A spokesperson for McCarthy and Stone said: ““It is important that developers listen and engage with local communities and we have undertaken a robust consultation programme since we first acquired an interest in the site in early March. “Our consultation with the community is an on-going process and we have already made amendments to these proposals following initial meetings by reconfiguring the building slightly, resulting in the loss of two apartments.” McCarthy and Stone said it expects the application to be validated soon following amendments.

A series of 12 portraits will reveal the motivations of female academics at the University of Sussex. The exhibition, by photographer Miss Aniela, is on display at Jubilee Library next week. The women are each pictured with an object that has had significance to their academic career.

COME AND BE INSPIRED AT OUR THURSDAY 30TH JUNE 2016 - 3PM TO 7PM Saltdean Lido - photo copyright Saltdean Lido

Saltdean Lido can be a tourist attraction again

I

was pleased to welcome Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to the Saltdean Lido recently. The Secretary of State met with myself, Rebecca Crook and Deryck Chester from the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) to find out about how the project is progressing and was also given a tour of the building including a visit to the 1930s plant room. It was great that he was also able to see the external works in progress. These are going really well and we will have a new pool and children’s pool with temporary changing facilities for local people to enjoy next year. I feel it’s really important for a city like Brighton and Hove that, as well as tourist attractions, there are also facilities for local residents to enjoy which compare favourably to the best. Saltdean Lido is the country’s only Grade II* listed lido situated by the sea. The Lido was built in 1937 and the site has a very interesting history. It was used as a training ground in World War II and hosted church services before Saltdean had a church. In 2010, a group of local residents formed Save Saltdean Lido with a vision to bring the site back into use as an all year round community and tourist destination. I was pleased to attend an exhibition about the plans shortly after being elected as Member of Parliament in 2010. Six years on, it is tremendous to

see that vision becoming a reality. Local people take pride through their involvement and the community spirit that it generates. Residents set up the CIC and have worked incredibly hard to secure funding for the project including £2.3 million from the Coastal Communities Fund,£440,000 from Social Investment Business, £50,000 People’s Millions Winner, £546,000 from the Heritage Lottery Funding stage 1 and £4.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Stage 2, which is to be confirmed subject to the next stage bid submission. The CIC have also raised £100,000 from their own fundraising efforts, including through their Wall of Fame initiative in which I was pleased to be able to play a part. The Secretary of State was really impressed with the CIC and how local people can come together for a community project such as this. Speaking about the visit he said: “Simon has been asking me to come and visit Saltdean Lido for ages and it was great to be able to come today and see this iconic building firsthand. “I know that Simon has been working together with the CIC group for many years and would like to pay tribute to all their effort and dedication in trying to bring the Lido back into use once again.” Despite all the money raised, the CIC do still need more funding. I will be working together with the CIC to do all I can to help to make the Saltdean Lido a facility for local people and tourists to enjoy once more.

Warren Morgan

Labour councillor and council leader

Our great city should lead, not follow

B

y the time you read this the EU Referendum will be over and Britain’s role in or out of Europe will be decided. After months of debate this will be a relief to most. For Brighton and Hove though, another question about our place in our region and the world must be addressed. Small to medium sized cities like ours around the globe are looking to the future and deciding what they want to offer residents, visitors and businesses. Alongside the day to day concerns about social care and parking, grass cutting and libraries, as leader of the city council I have a responsibility to ensure our home makes progress and does not decline, that it competes and cooperates rather than building walls around itself. Within our region and largely out of the public spotlight, discussions are going on about a range of new geographies and governance arrangements for health, transport, planning and economic growth. Local government faces wholesale but largely unstructured change; without a plan to see us through it the ability to provide the things residents need and expect is under

threat. Our city should lead, not follow. We should be at the heart of change, not at the mercy of it. We need a vision for 2020 and beyond that secures a better future, not one that harks after a better past. With the social, financial and infrastructure challenges we face, we have to take risks,

find bold and innovative solutions, not retreat into a comfortable but ultimately sterile decline. We are bidding for devolved powers from government that will give us the ability to tackle the housing crisis and bring in the money we need to fund basic services, and I met with the Secretary of State for Local Government recently to

make that case. I want to explore growing the Greater Brighton City Region to Crawley and Gatwick, creating a real powerhouse in the south east with global access and reach. We need the power and influence to ensure we have the transport infrastructure and governance to guarantee rail links to London, and I am seeking discussions with the mayor’s office in the capital to take that forward. We need a vision for a prosperous city where all share in our economic success, and our plans for investment and growth along our seafront, throughout the city and including up to our universities are moving at pace. An economy founded on tourism and conferences, arts and creative industries, digital and financial services, education and skills, entrepreneurship and independent businesses must be driven to prosper. Brighton and Hove has always faced outwards, has long been an international city, and to secure a successful future for those who live here we need to pursue this vision with energy and determination, confidence and aspiration, and a belief in ourselves as a city whose better days lie ahead of us.

Geoffrey Theobald

Leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton and Hove City Council

Reflections on Hove Library and the A23 eyesore

I

am truly grateful to all the residents who have taken the time to contact my colleagues and me to thank us for our great success in defeating the Labour Party’s proposals to move Hove Library and to express how delighted they are that, contrary to Labour scaremongering, this was not at the expense of securing the future of all our other libraries in Brighton and Hove. Not only have we ensured with our joint amendment with the Green Group that all library hours will stay the same or increase and that Hove Library will not be transferring to Hove Museum, but the surplus money made from selling the Hollingbury Library building and moving the facility into the nearby children’s and community centres is ring-fenced into the library service. This means that the substantial left over money will go straight back into our libraries rather than what the Labour Party wanted, which was for it to go in the council’s general fund. On another positive note, after months of attempts to meet with and get answers from Highways England on how we can improve the current eyesore that is the Patcham A23 roundabout, Councillor Lee Wares and I together with council officers were pleased to meet with a representative from Highways England who are responsible for the roundabout, to explore future options. It is the first sight that welcomes people travelling on the main route into the city. Dubbed by many as ‘the ugliest roundabout in Sussex’ Lee, Carol

Hove Library

and I, as Patcham councillors, have long been calling for someone to take responsibility and transform it into something more visually appealing that reflects the nature of our great city. Work is currently underway by Highways England under the surface of the roundabout which is expected to be completed in the coming months. Once finalised, they have indicated that they would be willing to consider options for the roundabout. Hundreds of thousands of people pass this roundabout and I feel that we can introduce sponsors to help fund something more visually appealing to welcome people to Brighton and Hove and to avoid it again becoming a wasteland covered in weeds. Finally, I do want to say how dreadfully sorry I am at the terrible death of MP Jo Cox last week in what can only be described as a heart-breaking tragedy. Jo was a mother, dedicated local MP and committed campaigner for human rights and she will be sorely missed not only by all her family and many friends and colleagues, but also by all those she helped and came into contact with. Although I did not know her personally, it does bring back memories of the death of my dear friend, Ian Gow, who was the MP for Eastbourne, and was murdered by a car bomb placed under his car at his home by the IRA in 1990. In this country MPs and councillors have always made themselves available to their constituents in order to serve them most fully and we must do everything possible to ensure that this will continue.

T he Rocks by Peter Nichols

This is a romantic page-turner propelled by the sixty-year secret that has shaped two families, four lovers, and one seaside resort community. This is the perfect holiday book – especially if you’re heading to Mallorca, where this is set. Set against dramatic Mediterranean Sea views and lush olive groves The Rocks opens with a confrontation and a secret: What was the mysterious, catastrophic event that drove two honeymooners apart so suddenly and absolutely in 1948 that they never spoke again despite living on the same island for sixty more years? And how did their history shape the Romeo and Juliet like romance of their (unrelated) children decades later? Centered around a popular seaside resort club and its community, The Rocks is a double love story that begins with a mystery, then moves backward in time, era by era, to unravel what really happened decades earlier. There are lovely glimpses of Spanish life here, too, as well as fantastic descriptions of the island. Nichols writes with a pervading, soulful wisdom and self-knowing humour, and captures perfectly this world of glamorous, complicated, misbehaving types with all their sophisticated flaws and genuine longing. The result is a bittersweet, intelligent, and romantic novel about how powerful the perceived truth can be as a bond, and as a barrier even if it s not really the whole story; and how one misunderstanding can echo irreparably through decades. This is a beach book with a touch of class.

Thousands raised for children’s charity More than £3,000 was raised for The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity at a Business Pulse event held at Brighton Racecourse. The charity supports babies and children under five with Cerebral Palsy. Catherine Bristow, events fundraiser, said: “We are extremely grateful to Nass from Business Pulse as having support from local businesses really can make

a huge difference to us. We are a small charity and the advantage for businesses is they can see at ground level what a difference they have made. We are looking for more companies to work with, so if your business is socially aware and you are looking to get involved with a charity please do contact me.” Email Catherine.bristow@ dvlcc.org.uk or visit our website www.dvlcc.org.uk

written by Dan Tester @DJDanteBrighton Excerpts from the book came into being on this very day at the Seven Stars Public House in Ship Street, Brighton. John Jackson – who had previously been involved with the town’s other two outfits, United and Rangers – was hoping for third time lucky this time around. The new club was to be christened Brighton and Hove United but Hove Football Club objected on the grounds

that they would lose support as the public may assume United were a merger of the former United and Rangers. As a result the Albion was born. The origins of the name are unclear but two reasons stand out: the town had many businesses with the Albion suffix, or it was because founder John Jackson had close links with West Bromwich Albion.

This light formulation is ideal first thing because you can put makeup on over it really quickly. This best seller is big on hydration with rose hip oil, marula and orange flower for daily support. I stopped at the Nourish stand at a show and will share more on this British brand over the summer. I was enchanted by their pretty makeup-skincare cross over; Gold Glow Illuminating

Face Shimmer. Boost natural luminosity through mineral particles with protein-boosting tripeptides and hyaluronic acid to keep you golden for longer, £16. The Nourish Radiance Firming Oil is an omega-rich Macadamia and Pumpkin oil blend with Rosehip and Borage oil, plus heady wafts of Geranium and Damask Rose. Marine Kalpariane and Frankincense help stimulate collagen to counter the signs of ageing, £25 for superb overnight support. Vanessa Felz is in The Guardian column ‘How I get Ready’ but I didn’t read her answers (she gets up insanely early). The full face story I crave would be Joan Collins. Twiggy only takes 30 minutes to get out the door – good going for a shower, dressing, hair and make up. I really best get a wiggle on.

Museums

by John Cooper

Change and variety at the Booth Museum

I

came to the Booth Museum of Natural History in September 1981, to take up the post of Keeper of Geology, and have just retired as Keeper of Natural History. I suppose 35 years is a very long time to have followed a career path with a single employer but in fact my career had begun at Leicestershire Museums (as it was then) seven years earlier, where I was employed in the Earth Sciences Section following a year teaching on VSO in Nigeria. I feel blessed to have had a rewarding career which, while in Brighton and Hove, took many twists and turns. After about 10 years at the Booth I took over its day-to-day running as Keeper of the Booth, followed by a short stint heading up Royal Pavilion and Museums’ Education Services team. Then, following a string of successful departmental bids for external funding, I took up the challenge of leading the Exhibitions Team, followed by project management and finally Volunteer and Training Management. But, for my last few years with Royal Pavilion and Museums, I returned to the Booth Museum and worked in what Mr Booth would perhaps have

Butterflies at the Booth Museum

called my “natural surroundings”. When I started back in 1981 the shops still closed on Sundays, and the city centre was a morgue. Even the corner shops closed at 5.30pm, and there were only three TV channels, no mobile phones, no internet or digital devices. There wasn’t even an M25! The Falklands war had yet to be fought and Lady Di and Prince Charles had just married.

Organisationally life was also very different back then: the Booth Museum had a team of four managing the collections and our natural history services, and we used a mainframe computer system to manage information about them. This was quite an advance at the time and put us firmly on the professional museum map; in 1984 the Booth Museum went on to acquire the firstever PC computer in the council!

The key words to describe my time in Brighton and Hove since then would be change and variety - words which are actually crucial in support of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. The Booth’s collections provide de facto evidence of the variety of life that exists both on a local basis and worldwide; but evolutionary theory can be applied to many things, not just life forms. Change to our work environment produces variation in work practices, and as time progresses a new ‘species’ of work pattern can evolve. This can produce a superior species, better fitted and adapted to the new environment, and can also lead to extinctions and mutations. Museums have been responding to evolutionary challenges for many years, and up and down the country my former colleagues are adapting to new environments. At the Booth too we have responded valiantly, but as I hand over the baton it’s clear that nextgeneration museums professionals must continue to ‘evolve’ how we preserve our precious heritage. John Cooper is Keeper Emeritus at the Booth Museum of Natural History in Brighton and Hove.

A heroic figure who retains topical relevance

D

own the road at Chichester, Joseph Fiennes has been playing him (“subtle and charismatic”). Up at Hampstead, Jack Laskey has been playing him (“underpowered”). Robert Pattinson plays him in a recent film (“wooden”). A century after the historical events that made him famous, T.E.Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia) seems if anything to be gaining in historical presence, rather than fading. Since the Iraq invasion of 2003, and the proliferation of insurgent groups, Western politicians, military leaders and administrators have been diligently conning Lawrence’s writings for clues as to what it’s all about, and what to do. Copies of his war memoir Seven Pillars of Wisdom circulated in the Pentagon, while a quote from his 1917 “Twenty-Seven Articles” – “Better the Arabs do it tolerably than that you do it perfectly” – was pinned up in operation rooms in Basra and Baghdad. (It had previously been pinned up in the US embassy in Saigon, during the Vietnam War, to much the same effect. Not pinned up in either location, presumably, was another Lawrence sentence from the same

T.E.Lawrence, Akaba 1917

year: “We are calling them to fight for us on a lie, and I can’t stand it.”) Capitalising on this interest, a stream of fat tomes about Lawrence has recently poured from the presses, by James Barr, Michael Korda (recommended), Anthony Sattin (ditto), Scott Anderson, Dick Benson-Gyles, and others. A review copy of the latest, Neil Faulkner’s 500-page Lawrence of Arabia’s

War, has just reached me. Faulkner, a military historian overseeing the Great Arab Revolt Project, an archaeological examination of some of the terrain where Lawrence and the Arabs fought against the Ottoman Turks (he recently turned up a bullet provably fired from Lawrence’s Colt revolver), endeavours to put the revolt – “a sideshow of a sideshow”, in Lawrence’s words – into its larger political and military context. At the Chichester Festival Theatre, Fiennes starred in a deserved revival of Terence Rattigan’s 1960 play Ross, while the Hampstead Theatre put on a new one by Howard Brenton called Lawrence After Arabia (full of wilful inaccuracies and anachronisms, apparently). Both portray a tortured postwar Lawrence, with wartime flashbacks. Rattigan, maybe predictably, highlights Lawrence’s alleged homosexuality; Brenton, also predictably, peddles Leftist anti-imperialism (“we live in the mess they left”). Pattinson’s lacklustre film was Queen of the Desert, about Lawrence’s fellow Arabist Gertrude Bell. The Arab Revolt was declared in June 1916, so the centenary contributes to the topical relevance. Lawrence, an intelligence officer in Cairo at that date, was sent to the Hejaz in October to liaise with Emir Feisal. His most

celebrated achievement, the capture of Akaba, took place in July 1917. The lie that Lawrence couldn’t stand involved the secret Sykes-Picot pact of early 1916 which, although never actually implemented, has become a kind of code for cynical imperialist realpolitik. Lawrence had to convince the Arabs they were fighting to gain Arab freedom, while knowing that back home red and blue lines had already been drawn on the postwar map. There’s a tendency these days to blame ourselves for the state the Middle East is currently in, but such breastbeating, it seems to me, is valid only up to a point. Yes, the great powers carved the place up at Versailles, and Lawrence himself, in 1921, went in for some unscrupulous top-down kingdom-making of precisely the kind he had previously disparaged – Saddam Hussein, according to one recent critic, “was merely the end result of a lengthy process that began with Lawrence”. But any number of other important factors, for which we are not responsible, including ancient sectarian hatreds, play a larger part. Lawrence himself is in any case an infinitely complex and fascinating figure whom book after book, film after film, and play after play, can only vainly attempt to pin down.

Ambulance staff tell of ‘culture

Trust warned of ‘serious nature of preliminary findings’ by Joshua Powling

joshua.powling@jpress.co.uk 01403 751230 | @JoshuaPowling

Number of assaults on paramedics revealed The number of assaults on paramedics across Sussex in 2015/16 has been revealed. South East Coast Ambulance Service recorded 69 attacks - about one every five days. Paramedics were attacked almost every other day in July 2015, with Crawley and Worthing accounting for three of the 13 incidents in that month each. A Freedom of Information request revealed the worst area was Brighton and Hove with 16 assaults from April 2015 to March 2016 while no assaults were recorded in Horsham and Lewes. Joint second were Worthing and Hastings with ten. Crawley had nine, Eastbourne seven, Arun six, Adur four, Mid Sussex three and Rother one. A spokesman for South

East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “Just one assault against our staff is one too many and ambulance crews must never be made to feel that violence or the threat of violence is just a part of their job. We encourage staff to report and take action against anyone who physically attacks or verbally abuses them. “The huge majority of patients and members of the public know that this kind of behaviour is deplorable and would never think of hurting someone who saves lives and serves the community. Sadly there are a very small number of individuals who seem to think this is acceptable. We will continue to work closely with the police and CPS to take action or pursue civil sanctions against them.”

Staff working for Sussex’s ambulance service have complained about a ‘culture of bullying and harassment’ to health regulators. South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, which covers Sussex, Surrey and Kent, was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) back in May, and although a full report is not due until the end of the year, an initial letter has been sent highlighting areas warranting ‘immediate further investigation and attention from the trust’. It explains that following the inspection the CQC had received calls from staff ‘indicating a continuing culture of bullying and harassment’. This supported some of the evidence from interviews during the inspection, and appear to be linked to inconsistent application of HR polices, such as sickness and return to work. In a letter to the trust Alan Thorne, head of hospital inspections at the CQC, said the caring approach of staff to patients was of a ‘very high standard’. But other areas of significant concern included a computer dispatch system that appeared to be outof-date without the most contemporaneous record of addresses. Arrangements for safeguarding were found to be ‘exceptionally weak with limited understanding of processes throughout the trust’, while the CQC’s letter said that allegations of abuse against staff were ‘not being investigated in an appropriate and timely manner’, while a high percentage of feedback from staff showed that some

following inspection by health service watchdog ‘did not feel cared for by the organisation’. During its inspection the CQC also found that management roles at all levels ‘lack clarity and as a result accountability is absent in many areas’, numerous policies were out of date, and the general approach to equipment management maintenance and checklists was ‘not seen as robust’. Meanwhileinfectioncontrol practices on ambulances, notably hand washing and waste disposal was ‘not of the expected standard’. Inhisletter,MrThornesaid: “We advised that these were initial findings and subject to further evidence review but indicated that these areas warranted immediate further investigation and attention from the trust.” He added: “We advised you that due to the serious nature of some of our preliminary findings we would be meeting within the next ten days to explore the possibility of immediate regulatory action. You will be advised by letter of any such outcomes.” A spokesman for SECAmb said: “South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust is keen to be open and transparent about the issues it is currently dealing with. “As a result, it was felt important to share with the public, through its website, initial findings highlighted in the letter from the CQC’s Alan Thorne. We await and will respond more fully once we know the outcome of the CQC’s full report in due course.” Commenting on the letter, SECAmb trust chairman Sir Peter Dixon said: “We have already shared the headlines of this letter with staff and governors but we have now clarified with the CQC that we are able to make the entire letter public.

“On the basis that it gives us very clear work to do, some of which has already started, I thought it important that everyone should have access to it. “As you will see, it is possible that further regulatory action will follow and I should emphasise that we will use that to enhance all aspects of our care for patients and our responsibility towards staff.” The inspection follows a controversial pilot in the winter of 2014/15 which delayed sending help for certain 111 calls, transferring them instead to the 999 system. Following the publication of an independent report into the scheme in March 2016 then chairman of the

ambulance trust Tony Thorne resigned and chief executive Paul Sutton took a leave of absence. Mr Sutton later left the trust to ‘pursue other interests’. The report highlighted poor governance, inadequate disclosure, and unclear clinical accountability, and explained that the pilot, which ran from December 2014 to February 2015, saw calls classified as Red 2 and Green referred to the 999 service from NHS 111 to be ‘retriaged’. The pilot allowed for up to ten minutes for the retriage of Red 2 calls and up to 20 minutes for Green calls before they were allocated for despatch. A joint recovery plan is being agreed with the

trust’s commissioners and Monitor, while a separate independent patient impact review is set to be published later this month. When the report was discussed by West Sussex county councillors back in April it was described as ‘damning’, while members thought the ‘general public had been very badly let down’. Acting chief executive and director of commissioning at SECAmb Geraint Davies explained that the pilot was undertaken in ‘challenging circumstances in terms of operational pressures’ but the trust was determined to ‘learn the lessons from what we did last winter and be open and transparent moving forward’.

Timeline DECEMBER 2014: Pilot delaying ambulance response times for some calls is implemented by SECAmb FEBRUARY 2015: SECAmb pilot ceases OCTOBER 2015: Health watchdog Monitor revealed to be investigating the pilot and its impact on patients MARCH 2016: Forensic report into pilot is published. Celebrating the best of the city’s fantastic businesses Winners revealed at inaugural Brighton & Hove Independent Business Awards

Celebrating the very best businesses in Brighton and Hove, there were plenty of local success stories. Rickshaw Travel and The Big Lemon bus company were big winners on the night, taking home two awards each. The night began with a drinks reception and threecourse meal, followed by the 20-category awards ceremony hosted by TV reporter and presenter Nick Wallis. First up was the Retailer award sponsored by First Payment. The judges had such a hard time picking a winner, there was a special recognition award for the runner-up which went to Dyke Road’s Seven Cellars. The winner of the award was florists Flowers Unlimited. The judges said the company was a great representative for the city, as although it had expanded into Europe and beyond the money is still coming back into Brighton. Next was the Small Business award, presented by sponsor Jane Saunders of Special Creations By Jane, which went to recruitment agency Ten2Sussex. The Employer of the Year award was sponsored by Sussex Chamber of Commerce, and went to Rickshaw Travel, which runs holidays to Asia, Africa, Central and South America. ‘Desires and dreams’ at this year’s Summit Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

The new owner of Brighton Pier is to be the keynote speaker at this year’s Brighton Summit. This year’s event, organised by Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce, is all about desire in business, whether it is to make money, retire early, employ a team or grow on an international level. The theme will be explored through talks by a number of speakers, and practical workshops throughout the day. Felicity Beckett, general manager of the Duke of York’s cinema is to open the event alongside the Carol Lewis, president of Brighton Chamber. The keynote speaker is Luke Johnson, new owner of Brighton Pier, chairman of the Institute of Cancer Research and serial entrepreneur, being the man behind Small Batch, The Ivy, Le Caprice, Strada, Neilson Active Holidays. Other speakers include Si Conroy from Scarlet Monday, Susan Carroll from Scala Advance, James Dempster from Cobb Digital and Jon Malyon from Tilt.

Last year’s event drew in more than 300 people

Delegates are able to customise their day, choosing from a number of speakers and workshops, with opportunities to networking during and after the Summit. Sessions throughout the day focus on virtual reality, social media, using dance for creativity in business, and the science of goal setting. Carol Lewis, Chamber president, said: “We all

have desires and dreams. At this Summit we’ll look at how these could drive our businesses and our work. On October 14 we’ll give everyone a brilliant day of networking, learning and fun. It will be the most enjoyable business conference you’ve ever attended.” The Summit is aimed at freelancers, CEOs, entrepreneurs and

employees as well as startups, social enterprises and those from not-for-profit organisations. Last year’s event - with the theme of business growth - attracted more than 300 people in the local business world, and this year is set to be just as popular. After last year’s event, Murdo Mathewson, founder of Ginger Dog Comms, said: “Thought provoking speakers, invaluable practical sessions, and effortless networking; Brighton Summit refreshes the business parts that other summits cannot reach.” Jill Woolf, managing director of Chimera Communications, said: “It feels like bunking off school to take a whole day out of the office but it’s well worth it, as you get lots of practical takeaway tips and techniques, fresh views and up-to-date news.” This year’s Brighton Summit will be held at The Clarendon Centre on New England Street on Friday, October 14. So many books, so little time

with Kylee Charles @ShotgunPRAgency Remember all those business advice and self-help books you wish you’d read but never found the time? At last, someone has come up with a solution! A new service has launched in the UK by a Brighton company. ‘Joosr’ provides downloadable book summaries that can be read in just 20 minutes. Each book provides all the key information of the original title but without all the pages. Co-founder of the service Darren BoydAnnells said: “Finding time to keep up with reading and learning

According to Sabrina’s updates on their Facebook page dedicated to his ‘journey of recovery’, Dan has also recovered his sense of humour. But Sabrina still faces the daunting task of paying for their mortgage, the alternative treatments, and taking care of the children, on her income alone. Ms Ashley hopes the video will raise awareness to help the family through this difficult time, and maybe even encourage some more dads to come out and swing with their slings. A veterans’ parade, exhibition and street entertainment are being held in New Road, Brighton on Saturday (June 25) to mark Armed Forces Day. The parade of veterans and cadets will start at 11am, with Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, James May, and the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Pete West. Anyone who has been in the services is welcome to take part in the parade and should gather in Jubilee Street at 10.30am. An exhibition featuring the Royal British Legion, the Royal Sussex Regiment Association, Blind Veterans UK, the Chattri Memorial Group will be held in the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre from 9.30am to 2pm, with poetry readings. Music will be provided in New Road from noon-2pm, and armed forces charities will have information stalls from 10am-2pm. The event is being organised by Brighton & Hove City Council, the Royal British Legion and other partners.

Eight dancing dads and their babies in slings were the stars of a fundraising video released for Father’s Day. ‘Sling Swing Daddy Special’, hosted at New Fit and organised by Chloe Ashley, teaches the dance moves to local parents. For this class, the fathers got together to learn a choreography set to ‘Daddy Cool’, with their young ones strapped to them in baby carriers. The goal of the special instalment of Sling Swing Brighton and Hove was to make a film to help raise money for the family of Dan Mason from Hove, after he suffered from a debilitating cardiac arrest last year. Ms Ashley said: “I met Sabrina last year through a parents’ support group on Facebook which she set up. “She has two little girls of similar ages to mine, so we

Gentlemen’s Day attracts record crowd Suits, boots, beards and braces were just some of the stylish looks on show at Brighton Racecourse’s Gentlemen’s Day. The fabulous weather helped to draw a great crowd to the second Gentlemen’s Day at the Racecourse, which was once again sponsored by Genting Casino. “We were so impressed by the effort so many of our gentlemen visitors made to join in with the spirit of the day and impress us with their sartorial style,” said Brighton Racecourse marketing manager Grainne Bartholomew. “BeingBrighton, we would expect no less!” From the many gents who entered the competition, ten finalists were selected and the winner was chosen by the team from Genting Casino Brighton. Choosing second and third place was tricky but there was no hesitation in picking union jack-suited Jack Lilley as the winner. Jack, from Bristol, had chosen to come to Brighton for his stag weekend with a group of friends and they were clearly having a fabulous day out.

Molly’s play Broad Shadow was chosen out of more than 300 entries for a performance by professional actors at the National Theatre in July. Entries came from 66 schools across the UK, as

well as partner theatre programmes at Bristol Old Vic and West Yorkshire Playhouse. The play will be performed in the NT’s Dorfman Theatre, London, on July 6, 7 and 8, at 5.30pm. In Broad Shadow, Molly tells the story of the strain placed on the relationship between a mother and a daughter when, after a job opportunity, the latter is given a chance to move away

Molly said: “I am ecstatic and humbled to have won this competition, as well as incredibly grateful to the National Theatre for providing me with this opportunity to get my work out there. he Indian restaurant has played an important role in UK society for some time, and throughout this time they have evolved and developed. I remember when I was growing up being taken by my parents to “The British Raj” in Westbury-on-Trym as an occasional Sunday treat after rugby. This was your classic early 90s curry house with a menu that had probably not changed since the late 70s and a décor that was replicated in 90 per cent of Indian restaurants across the country. Back then I would only eat chicken tikka with multi-coloured rice, iceberg lettuce and a naan bread, it was simple no-fuss food. Often the highlight of the meal came at the end when we were presented with our hot towels that my dad made a great show of by removing his glasses and draping over his face. As I grew older I would visit numerous restaurants that were pretty much identical to the British Raj. Azaro Dhaba is one of the new breed of Indian restaurants that are sweeping across the country, and this one is breaking the mould in more ways than one. Founded by Bradfordborn partners Az and Kirti in 2012 the restaurant serves up proper regional, locally soured, desi food with a contemporary Dhaba street food twist. The restaurant is very rare in that they have a female head chef in the form of Kirti, in fact 60 per cent of the kitchen staff are female which is almost unheard of in the industry. Upon arrival we are greeted by very friendly and enthusiastic staff who show us to our table. They are very keen to talk us through the menu and explain the restaurants style, in addition to being flexible in adapting to any dietary requirements be that dairy free, gluten free, vegan or just in terms of heat levels. We are presented with the obligatory

tray of poppadums and a selection of chutneys, however these are somewhat more interesting that the standard offering. There is a selection of different accompaniments to enjoy with the varied selection of dips. Far Far are a multi-coloured fried snack traditionally made using potato starch and Chevra which are similar to puffed rice. The dips themselves were excellent with the best mango chutney I’ve ever had – none of the overly sweet sticky nonsense – which has smoked and spiced depths, a wonderfully hot sauce, sweet tamarind, refreshing raita and a coriander dip. For the mains we are offered a choice of thali or their signature dhum biryani. We go for a meat thali (£12.95) which we find out is chicken, and the king prawn biryani (£15.95). They make a big show of the biryani advising me that they are the only restaurant in the city that prepares a traditional Hyderabadi dhum biryani. The word dhum means “steam” and the dish is prepared in the traditional madka which is a clay cooking pot that is sealed with a dough “lid” before being baked in the tandoor. The food arrives and it is immediately a visual treat. The thali is a tasting platter of around four main dishes with sides. The focus of this is a tikka masala which is accompanied by rice, bread,

more poppadums and dips, spiced potato fritters called aloo tikki and even a sweet doughnut and mango lassi to finish. It is a really fun way to get a taste of lots of different dishes without having to commit to a single one. The aloo tikki is a highlight, which they have made gluten free through the use of sesame and poppy seeds, with a lovely spiced potato cake and crisp coating. I feel that the main chicken dish could do with a bit more spice, and for the sauce to be a bit richer as I felt that the overriding flavour was of tomato more than anything else. The biryani really looks impressive with the domed bread topping sealing in all the aromas and flavour. It comes with a yoghurt dip and masala gravy to stir into the rice plus a special biryani spoon with which to do the mixing. I crack open the soft lid and get an aroma of cardamom and mustard seeds with a background of garam masala and sweet onions. The rice is cooked beautifully and the prawns add a textural change to the layers of rice. As with the chicken tikka in the thali I was hoping for just a little more oomph from the biryani and slightly more depth of flavour. Azaro Dhaba is a restaurant that occupies an interesting space in the Indian restaurant scene. They focus on very traditional styles and even have their own spice room on site where they grind their own garam masala. They are certainly a cut above the old style curry houses of my youth but not quite up to the standards of some of their peers in the city such as Chilli Pickle, Indian Summer and Café Chilli. I would be really interested in trying some of the other dishes on the menu as they are clearly passionate and enthusiastic about their food and some of the flavours I tried were excellent. Tom Flint writes a food blog Food Booze and Reviews at: www. foodboozeandreviews.com

incture is my new favourite word. I think it’s beautiful. I have a tincture of regret that I’ve only just discovered it, a tincture of sadness that I won’t be able to use it often, and a tincture of vaingloriousness that I now know what it means. Other titillating, tantalising terms include tachyphrasia, thalassophobia, titubate, titivate, and tuile. Although tuile sounds like a northerner telling you which part of his vehicle needs your attention, it is in fact a French word. Un mot francais, si tu veux. Tuile means tile in French, and whereas in the UK our roof tiles look nothing like delicate little baked wafers, in France they most certainly do. If you’ve seen Jean de Florette or Manon des Sources, then not only will you be able to envisage this type of tiled roof on a country home with ease, but we also probably went to school together, as nobody watches those films out of choice. Tuiles are usually made with a dough consisting of flour, butter, sugar, and almonds. Sometimes they’re made with cheese instead of dough. When they’re on Depardieu’s house, they’re made of terracotta. Or maybe slate. Or these days perhaps concrete. Or even plastic. A roof tile in Provence looks like a biscuit, whether it’s a hipped roof, gable end, or even a mansard roof, and regardless of the pitch and whether or not there’s a truss or a purlin. Yeah that’s right, I can talk builder. I’ve even got an ear-pencil. Tuiles must be bent into their edible roof tile shape whilst hot. In France, one can buy a mould designed especially for this purpose. In England, one must use a tin of beans, butternut squash, or just not bother. “Quelle Tuile” is an expression in French. It has nothing to do with biscuits or building. It means “what a blow”. I’ve heard some silly expressions before, but that one really takes the biscuit. With a tincture of surprise, I note that some of our most beautiful words possess a similar meaning to tincture: scintilla, tittle, and smattering. And with a tincture of confusion, I wonder who I’d ask to judge my completed tuiles – James Martin or Tommy Walsh. Perhaps the answer is to invite Gregg Wallace and Dominic Littlewood, as nobody can tell the difference between them anyway.

Classic is already a record breaker by staff reporter

www.worthingherald.co.uk/motors

The 2016 Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) is already confirmed as a record breaker with the flourishing Historic Touring Car Challenge fielding its biggest-ever grid on its debut at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival. More than 50 evocative cars as raced in European and British Touring Car Championships during the seventies and eighties will be reliving their glory days in a thrilling 40-minute showdown on Tin

Top Sunday (31 July). Adding to the bumper-tobumper excitement, the race will be for two drivers with compulsory pit-stops. The unparalleled entry features no fewer than a dozen Ford Capris, eight Rover SD1s – including Andy Rouse’s 1984 BTCC title winner – plus a trio of giant-killing Metro Turbos. The amazing line-up also costars a host of other notable track classics from the same era such as BMW 3.0 CSLs and M3s, Triumph Dolomite Sprints, Alfa Romeo GTVs, Jaguar XJ12 and XJS, Ford Merkur XR4i, Datsun 240Z

plus a pair of mighty V8 propelled Chevrolet Camaros. There are some notable drivers renewing old rivalries, too. Multiple BTCC race winner Jeff Allam will be back behind the wheel of the BP sponsoredCaprihefirstraced to victory in 1979. World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff is competing in another of the fastback Fords, while past BTCC favourite Patrick Watts is among those revving up in the trio of Metro Turbo pocket rockets. LONG-TERMTEST:CITROENC4CACTUSMONTH1

THE CREATURE FROM T H E B L U E L AG O O N by Matt Allan Motoring writer

There’s been a rainbow of cars rolling across my driveway recently.

I’ve seen everything from bright orange muscle cars to coral pink superminis. Now there’s this – the Citroen C4 Cactus in eye-searing Blue Lagoon. The Cactus is the ultimate Marmite car – people either love it or hate it. I’ve always been in the former camp and, after a day or two getting used to the colour, I still am. It’s fundamentally an ordinary small hatchbackcum-SUV but looks like nothing else in its segment – or any other. On our model the black Airbump pods on the door stand out in bold contrast to the vibrant paintwork, as do the matching wheelarches, light surrounds and tailgate. The whole shape is clean and smooth, there is plenty of detail – the high-set running lights, for example – but it flows with the overall shape and doesn’t look fussy. The “curvy box” shape and contrast between shiny paint and matt plastics create a road presence rivals can’t compete with. Inside it’s bold as well. A slimline instrument binnacle directly in front of the driver displays basics such

The Cactus comes with a choice of three petrols or a diesel engine. Ours is equipped with the topwh ac k Pu re Te c h 1 1 0 (108bhp) but there are also 74 and 81bhp versions of the same three-cylinder unit. As is usual, I haven’t yet seen near the claimed 65.7mpg but have regularly been knocking on the door of 50mpg. And first impressions of the petrol unit are good. It’s not over-endowed in the power stakes but the Cactus weighs almost exactlyatonnesoitfeelsperkyand willingandwillhit60mphin under ten seconds. TheCactusrangestartsat £12,990 for a 74bhp in Touch trim. Our Flair model with the 108bhp engine comes in

at £17,990 before options. For your money you get thattouchscreenwiththenow expected USB and Bluetooth connectivity, sat nav and a reversing camera plus automation for the air con, lights and wipers. Our test car also has parking assist (yet to be tested) and the Citroen eTouch system to call for emergency assistance or send details of a fault direct to the dealer over the internet. What you don’t get are

proper rear windows. Instead the Cactus features pop-out glass like a three-door hatch from the 1980s. Doing away with window motors might save weight and it might look quirky to some but I’m not a fan. Overall, though,I’mquietly impressedsofar–ashavebeen a couple of colleagues who I’d expectedtopourscornonthis in-your-face wee hatchback. Time will tell if it can keep up the good work.

Albion chief executive Paul Barber believes Jiri Skalak’s appearance at Euro 2016 shows just how far the club has come. Skalak played 67 minutes for the Czech Republic in their 2-2 draw with Croatia on Friday as he became the first-ever Brighton player to play at the European Championships. Former Seagulls Aaron Hughes and Stephen Ward

have also played for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively at the tournament. Skalak scored twice in 15 appearances after joining Albion from Mlada Boleslav in January, including the club’s goal of the season in the 4-0 win against QPR. Speaking to www.seagulls. co.uk, Barber said: “Since moving to the Amex, we have seen many players representing their countries. “Not that long ago our club was famously playing at a converted athletics stadium plyingitstradeinthethirdtier

of English football, but now we are talking about current and former players playing on one of the game’s biggest stages and it is fantastic to see. “It is a real sign of how our club has grown and developed and it is also testament to the quality of players we have been able to attract over the past few years. “On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to congratulate Jiri on making his major tournament debut as well as making club history, and look forward to more of our players following in his footsteps in the future.”

Sport Albion to begin new campaign at Derby Brighton & Hove Albion

Steve Bailey

steve.bailey@jpress.co.uk Twitter: @SteveBailey67

Albion will get the new Championship season under way with a trip to Derby County on August 6. After missing out on automatic promotion to the Premier League on goal difference and then losing in the play-off semi-finals last season, it is a tough openingday trip for the Seagulls. Derby appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager last month, after the Rams also lost in the play-off semi-finals, having finished fifth last season. After the trip to the iPro Stadium, Brighton have three successive home matches, starting with the first round of the EFL Cup against League Two Colchester United on the week commencing August 8. Like last season, Nottingham Forest will be the first league opponents at the Amex, on August 13. Brighton began their 201516 campaign with a 1-0 victory

over Forest when Kazenga LuaLua scored the only goal of the game. Rotherham then make the trip to Albion on August 16, before two tricky away games conclude the opening month of the season. The Seagulls travel to Reading on August 20, before they head to Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side on August 27. Albion fans will have little travel over Christmas and new year, with home games against Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day and Cardiff City on New Year’s Eve, followed by a trip to Fulham on January 2. The Seagulls have seven games during a busy April, including a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers on April 15 and then a home match with Wigan Athletic on Easter Monday two days later. Albion’s last home game of the season is against Bristol City on April 29, before their season finishes at relegated Premier League side Aston Villa on Sunday, May 7. See page 53 for a full list of Albion’s 2016-17 fixtures.

Annual festival Sussex in action at the castle

Selection by England for their NatWest T20 International against Sri Lanka next month has given Sussex fast bowler Tymal Mills a massive boost as he continues his fight to forge a short-form career despite a chronic spinal condition. Mills, 23, can only play T20 cricket as his back problem prevents him from bowling too many overs. Sussex’s leftarmer, however, can still bowl as rapidly as ever in short bursts; earlier this month he shattered Chris Gayle’s stumps with a 93.5mph thunderbolt in a NatWest T20 Blast game against Somerset. England’s call, following impressive form for Sussex this season, will undoubtedly spur Mills on. He reckons he can go faster than the ball which castled Gayle, although the slower ball is also a major weapon in his T20 arsenal. He said: “You must always factor in the different pitches, the different dimensions of the grounds and boundaries, the batsman you are bowling at, the match situation – there are so many other things to take into account and you have to adapt to the circumstances. “It’s not just a case of bowling fast. In T20, if you don’t have variations in your

Sussex paceman Tymal Mills

bowling method you will get lined up pretty quickly by the batsmen. In T20 the margins are so small. That’s why you need your slower balls, your yorkers or the ability to hit the pitch hard and get the ball to bounce more.” Mills is grateful to the support he has had at Sussex since learning about his spinal condition soon after he moved to the South Coast. He said: “When I came to Sussex, I was given licence to bowl to my strengths and was given lots of opportunity in four-day cricket too. Then, of course, I learned I can only play in limited-overs cricket, but that is going well and I’m delighted to get a chance to show what I can do with England.”

Skalak breaks new ground for Albion at international level Brighton & Hove Albion

Sussex’s annual Festival of Cricket at Arundel Castle got under way on Wednesday, with Northamptonshire the visitors in the County Championship. The match runs until Saturday, with a T20 Blast match against Gloucestershire on Sunday. They are Sussex’s only home matches away from Hove this summer, although the county are set to play a one-day game at Eastbourne again next year, after a 17-year break.

Mills: England call a massive boost

While there will ultimately be disappointment for Jiri Skalak after the Czech Republic’s early exit from the European Championships, he will return to a club and fan base who will be proud of what he has achieved this summer. The winger may have played only 67 minutes for his country during their hardfought 2-2 draw with Croatia in Group D, but by doing so the 24-year old became the first ever Brighton player to take part in the European Championships while at

the club. Despite the number of international-level players Albion have seen come and go in their history, it will be a surprise to many that it has taken so long for a current player to represent their country in an international tournament. It’s an incredible achievement for both club and player, and with qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup set to begin in September, Skalak will no doubt have his eyes set on making it to another international tournament, as well as getting ready

for what will be another tough campaign in the Championship next season. There is still some interest in terms of former Albion players who have made it through to the knock-out stages. Aaron Hughes and Stephen Ward have represented Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively, with the pair in with a chance of playing in their country’s respective round of 16 games against Wales and France this weekend. ou know the conversation. “Do we have to? It’s going to take ages.” Christmas, Easter Bank Holidays. The family trip to visit relatives. It’s a debate often had in households across the country but for football supporters it is a different outlook. The fan decides whether he or she wants to go. It may be a case of ticking a ground off the list, seeing the historic promotion match or escape from relegation but the supporters have the choice. However, the fixtures are all subject to the vagaries of the computer, local rivalries, policing and the TV schedule. Okay, so we have week one and week 46 sorted. The rest may change. Some slight alterations can be expected over the next ten days as clubs request changes but all games across the season can

be changed by the rights holder. Sometimes it won’t impact on fans but if a long trip is required, the inconvenience and cost can be extreme. Take for example Brighton & Hove Albion’s trip to Newcastle. It is perhaps one of, if not the longest trip in the Championship. It currently stands on Saturday, August 27, a Bank Holiday weekend. With a 700-mile, 12-hour round trip to the North East across a weekend, the drive would seem illogical. The train or a flight is possible but with a team as big as Newcastle it is a fixture ripe for TV coverage. One of many I expect for the Magpies. So even if you manage to pick up a bargain, you may have to pay to change tickets or even accommodation. It is inevitable but the glamour of St James’ Park may eclipse a Tuesday night at Rotherham.

Sussex frustrated after T20 match is abandoned Cricket

Lewis Mason

There was frustration for Sussex last Friday when a heavy shower saw their T20 Blast match at rivals Hampshire abandoned. A burst of heavy rain seemed to catch out the Ageas Bowl ground staff as puddles made part of the square and run ups unplayable. Each side gets a point and Sussex remain in the pack to qualify for the quarter-finals. Sussex captain Luke Wright said: “It was a huge shower but to have a game called off because water has got onto the wicket is very annoying and not what you expect from a Test ground. “There’s not a lot you can do, you just have to suck it up, but it feels a bit unjust.”

Whitehawk boss Pablo Asensio’s squad is starting to take shape ahead of the upcoming National League South campaign. Whitehawk have agreed deals with ten players, while striker Danny Mills’ contract runs out at the end of the 201617 campaign, so he will remain with Hawks for the coming season. Skipper Sergio Torres has signed a new one-year deal, while Ahmed Abdulla, Marvin Hamilton, Albi Llenga, Duncan Culley, Chris M’Boungou, Javier Favarel, Jose Mauricio Guzzi, Wilfired Tagbo and Marcus Riberio have also agreed to join. Hawks boss Asensio admitted his delight after getting those deals done more than a week before they return for pre-season on Saturday, July 2. And Asensio promised more additions are to come in the next few days. He said: “It’s exciting to get all these deals over the line. I’ve identified the players that I wanted and have managed to get those in. “The team from last season were exceptional and did a great job but I’m an Argentine coach brought up with a philosophy. “I feel the players brought
