Tourism businesses lead clean-up TOURISM BUSINESSES led by SEA LIFE Brighton, Brighton Pier, Hilton Brighton Metropole and the Brighton & Hove Tourism Alliance, have resolved to continue their clean-up of Brighton beach as long as the Cityclean workers strike continues.

"Our primary concern is the protection of marine wildlife", said Max Leviston, general manager of Brighton's SEA LIFE aquarium.

"Broken glass, metal and plastics all pose a serious risk to creatures who live along our shores, and we are ensuring a significant stretch of the beach is cleaned thoroughly every day".

Beach clean-up volunteers have agreed with strikers not to remove rubbish from council-owned bins but only to pick up loose items from the beach and promenade. As of Wednesday 19 June, 14 commercial waste bins provided by Brighton Pier and SEA LIFE had been filled from the collections, including large amounts of glass bottles, food packaging, nightclub flyers and soiled nappies.

Businesses across the town centre have also followed the example set by the tourism sector, with retailers and restaurants looking after the areas surrounding their businesses, and disposing of litter through their own commercial waste contracts. Hotels in the city including Hilton Brighton Metropole,

The Grand, myhotel and Hotel du Vin have all contributed to the seafront clean up.

There is increasing concern from businesses citywide that the health and safety of residents, staff and tourists is also now being compromised by the rotting piles of waste and smashed glass.

"We will continue to offer to help and work alongside Cityclean staff with the clean-up as soon as they are back at work", said Soozie Campbell, chair of the Tourism

Contamination incident closes seafront paddling pool BRIGHTON SEAFRONT PADDLING POOL has been closed due to a contamination incident.

Routine tests have found raised levels of bacteria in the water, which could have come from birds, dogs or humans.

The facility, next to the West Pier site, is expected to be closed until June 24 – the exact time still to be confirmed.

The water has been drained to enable staff to clean the pool floor and filtering systems.

The council says other paddling pools are available - at Hove Lagoon and Saunders Park in Brighton - and the water play facility with fountains is open near the Yellowave beach sports centre on Madeira Drive.

Council executive director Geoff Raw said: “We’re really sorry but this is always a risk with an outdoor pool. It’s extremely bad luck that the incident coincides with what could be some of the warmest weather of the year so far.

“We’ll work to get it open as soon as possible and in the meantime we’re reminding families there are other places where children can have a splash-about.”

Penny Thompson, the council’s chief executive, said: “I’m truly sorry we are in this situation.

If Monday’s action - involving drivers - goes ahead, there will be a three-day “window” in which staff will be available for work.

But if there is no breakthrough before then, only street cleaners who do not use vehicles will continue working - and the filthy piles on the streets of the city will continue to grow.

Asked whether the union had considered delaying the new action to enable some of the refuse backlog to be cleared and provide some respite for residents, Mr Turner said: “We are doing that for three days at the end of this week.”

He added: “We accept and understand the frustration from the public, but the stumbling block is the authority.”

The council has not yet commented on the new threat.

THERE ARE ABOUT 24,000 people in Brighton and Hove who regard themselves as carers – people who on an unpaid basis look after a relative, partner or friend who needs help as a result of age, illness or disability. It can be a very big responsibility that affects all aspects of carers’ lives. However they are many people in the city who don’t realise they are carers, or the support that’s available to them.

For example by working with local charity Amaze and the city’s Carers Centre, we’ve been able to introduce a ‘carers’ card’, which entitles carers to discounts on a range of leisure and other activities across the city. We also support carers in taking respite breaks from their caring roles, helping them to recharge and avoid burning out.

The Carers Centre does a huge amount of work to support carers of all ages and backgrounds. For example they hold social and information events so that carers can meet others in similar positions, which are vital to help those who feel isolated, and offer specific advice on helping people with particular conditions.

I recently attended the Carers Centre Carer’s Challenge Big Event during National Carer’s Week. The event aimed to raise awareness of the crucial role of carers in the city, and find out more from carers about their experiences.

I heard so many stories of the huge emotional, physical and financial challenges carers and their families can face. Often a

caring role can start very unexpectedly leaving the carer experiencing a big change in their life whilst learning how to care for a loved one.

Many residents either care themselves or will know someone who does - but unfortunately carers don’t always get the help they need. It’s crucial we look after our city’s carers and recognise their enormous contributions to society.

Man wanted for Hove murder arrested A 31-YEAR-OLD MAN wanted in connection to the murder of Xhem Krasniqi has been arrested in Milan on Friday 14 June.

The man, who is unemployed and of no fixed address, was arrested by local police on the direction of the Surrey & Sussex

Major Crime Team for murder, two attempted murders and possession of a Section 1 firearm, a pistol.

This follows the fatal shooting of Xhem Krasniqi in Hove on Saturday 18 May. He will be extradited to the UK.

Four years for prolific Brighton burglar

POLICE ARE APPEALING for witnesses to an attempted robbery of a Brighton convenience store.

Two members of staff, a 27-year old woman assistant and the 35-year old male shopkeeper were cashing up in the Costcuttter off-licence and store at Pelham Terrace, in Lewes Road, Brighton, at the end of the evening at 9.45pm on Sunday, 16 June, when a man entered, threatened them with a knife, and demanded money. They refused and resisted, throwing two bottles at him, and he ran off empty-handed.

The two staff members were not injured.

The suspect is described as white, in his late 20's to mid 30's, 5'08'', of very slim build and with mousey coloured hair. He was wearing a black leather jacket over a dark hooded top, and dark blue Adidas jogging bottoms.

Detective Constable Aran Boyt said; "If you saw the incident please call us on 101 quoting serial 1386 of 16/6. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Man missing from Telscombe Cliffs is found safe and well POLICE WANT TO THANK members of the public for their support in finding a man missing from Telscombe Cliffs.

The man, who suffers from Alzheimers, was found walking in Saltdean by a member of the public at about 3.30pm Sunday afternoon. He has been returned home safe and well.

ANTHONY BOWLES, 31, unemployed of Preston Road, Brighton has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for committing five house burglaries across Brighton at the beginning of 2013.

Bowles, who pleaded guilty, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday 13 June.

Detective Sergeant Kate Witt from Brighton and Hove Priority Crime Unit said: "This is a good result and I'm pleased that Bowles will be off our streets for some considerable time and hopefully this will result in less people having to deal with the distressing issue of becoming a victim of burglary.

"Bowles preferred burglary method was what we refer to as a 'creeper' style - in that he would burgle homes late at night or in the very early of the morning when the occupants were in bed asleep."

"He was arrested on 4 February when he tried to use a stolen bankcard and local officers making enquiries recognised him on some CCTV footage. A warrant was then obtained and property recovered from

his home linked him to four burglaries and forensics to another. Following a lengthy investigation he finally pleaded guilty and was consequently sentenced.

"I would appeal to anyone who has been a victim of burglary to please get in touch or if you hear or see any suspicious activity in your area to dial 999 immediately."

Kemptown MP calls for an end to city rubbish saga SIMON KIRBY, Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven has repeated his request for Brighton and Hove City Council and the GMB union to negotiate an end to the current strike. Mr Kirby has also asked if a legal way can be found to remove items of rubbish in the street which may cause a health hazard.

Simon said: “The situation is evidently very serious and whilst the GMB and City Council have entrenched positions the situation across the City has clearly gone beyond an industrial dispute and is now a public health hazard.

“What is needed, and what constituents who contact me want to see, is immediate action from both sides to end this standoff and to clear the streets of the piles of rubbish, which pose a very real health risk to residents. This situation will only become worse with the warmer weather and the effects of seagulls and rats.”

In the light of the GMB announcing plans for another strike starting on the 24 June Simon is writing to the Chief Executive of Brighton and Hove City Council to see if a legal way can be found to remove refuse which poses the greatest potential risk to health for residents in the City.

Simon continued: “Many constituents are contacting me, clearly alarmed at the situation that has developed, and given the

Simon said: “I was delighted when the £420 million funding for redeveloping the Royal Sussex Hospital was announced as this will ensure we have the best possible healthcare facilities for patients. However I am becoming

increasingly concerned at the delay in this funding being released.”

Funding was due to be signed off in April 2012 but concerns surrounding the local NHS Trust’s finances have resulted in delays.

Simon added: “I have contacted the Chancellor requesting a meeting to discuss this important issue so that we can have a hospital fit for the 21st Century. I will continue to press this issue and to work hard for local people as a strong voice for our area.”

“The damage being done to Brighton’s reputation as a tourist destination, as well as the inconvenience to taxpayers and the potential danger to the health of local residents are all too important to play party politics with and I therefore call on other parties to get round the table to support efforts to find a mutually agreeable solution as quickly as possible.”

FOLLOWING CONCERNS about the quality of the seawater in Brighton & Hove, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has written to his colleague the Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, for some clarification on the matter.

In his letter to the Secretary of State, Mike said: “Brighton and Hove is a wonderful seaside resort. However, a number of concerns have been raised with me about the quality of the water.

Particular worries have been voiced over the level of pollution and its causes.

“I understand that storms have a considerable impact on the quality of water

within a specific area and while sewage may not be an issue from Brighton and Hove, pollution from the neighbouring conurbations may be an important factor, including from the river Adur. As well as these specific issues, I am interested in the general fish stock off the coast of Brighton and Hove as well as the cleanliness of the beaches themselves.”

MP calls for council to protect community spaces

Bus travel doubles in Brighton & Hove

SIMON KIRBY, Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has written to the City Council to urge them to act swiftly to reopen the transit site for travellers at Horsdean.

Simon said: “With the summer now fast approaching, undoubtedly groups of travellers will return to the City looking for somewhere to stay. I am therefore concerned that the Council’s dedicated transit site at Horsdean has now remained closed for many months with no sign of being reopened, increasing the likelihood of unauthorised encampments at inappropriate sites, as recently witnessed on ground by the cemetery in Woodingdean.”

Simon continued: “I am therefore calling on the City Council to ensure the transit site at Horsdean is open again as soon as possible and to ensure that travellers wishing to stay in the City are directed to this site, rather than setting up camps in places like Happy Valley, Saltdean Oval and East Brighton Park as has happened previously.”

Simon concluded: “Many residents continue to contact me about this issue and I am concerned that the City Council still does not have adequate plans in place to deal with unauthorised encampments satisfactorily. Local residents should not suffer inconvenience as a result of the Council’s failure.”

THE NUMBER OF BUS JOURNEYS made in Brighton & Hove has doubled in 20 years, according to the latest figures.

Bus journeys soared from 22 million in 1992/3 to 44.8 million in 2012/13. The figure represents the total number of single passenger journeys within the city using all eight bus operators.

The huge popularity of buses in Brighton & Hove reflects successful partnerships between the council and operators, and sustained private and public investment in services over the years to make it easy and convenient for people to travel by bus.

Having strong partnerships has put the city in a strong position to win government funding for transport, most recently being awarded £3.4 million for the ‘Better Bus Area’ and over £4 million to improve Lewes Road.

Another successful feature of joint working has been the ability to match services to the differing needs of residents, workers and visitors to encourage them to use buses more.

Mark Prior, head of transport at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “We work with our partners to provide a public transport network that offers good choice, is easy to use and convenient. More people choosing to use buses will also help to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.”

Nick Hill, Commercial Manager at Metrobus, added: “Brighton & Hove is an excellent environment to operate bus services in thanks to the bus priority

infrastructure provided by the city council. This was a key factor in our decision to more than quadruple our services to the city last year.

Many other towns and cities in the UK could learn from Brighton & Hove's experience of the benefits of such strong partnership with bus operators.”

Chris Chatfield, Managing Director of Compass Travel, said: “We are very pleased to be operating a number of contracted bus routes in Brighton & Hove. The partnership approach between the council and bus operators is the key to this huge growth in patronage. We are very keen to play our part in this and look forward to the continuing future growth and success of the bus network”.

Martin Harris, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Bus Company, said: “Brighton & Hove has been a big success because we work hard to ensure the bus services respond to what people want and working in partnership means we can achieve so much more. It’s good to know that bus travel in the city is continuing to go from strength to strength.”

Andrew Dyer, from Stagecoach South, said: “Our continual investment into new vehicles, smarter ticketing, more frequent services and the introduction of the concessionary fare scheme alongside improvements made by the council, has encouraged more people in the Brighton and Hove area to use the bus. Passenger numbers on Stagecoach services have almost doubled in seven years."

In percentage terms Stagecoach South has seen growth of 97% since 2005/6.

Tom Druitt from the Big Lemon Bus Company, said: “It's wonderful to hear that more and more people are using the buses and I'm proud of the small role that The Big Lemon has played in that. I look forward to working with the city council and the other operators in the city to make the buses more and more convenient, affordable and sustainable."

Divorce is a rubbish situation...

The rubbish is piling up on our streets. Those involved feel they are right and therefore a dispute of seemingly gargantuan proportions has emerged.

Each has taken a position, so a stand off has resulted.

Where does that leave you and me? I’m wading through unpleasant rubbish whenever I venture out.

I feel like a bit of a victim of this dispute as I feel uncomfortable and slightly depressed ‘out there’.

When divorcing couples take positions their dispute can seem insurmountable too. I wonder how their children feel? Are the kids wading through their parents rubbish? My view is that they are.

Research shows that children who see their parents

amicably sorting things out do better in every measurable way.

So I would encourage separating couples to adopt processes that avoid the kind of unpleasant stand offs we are experiencing in this ‘rubbish’ dispute. In mediation and collaborative processes the couple can both hear each other with trained professionals who can help bring about a settlement.

Mike Holland WHAT ON EARTH is going on with this ridiculous rubbish situation? Both sides appear to have negotiating skills not usually seen outside primary school. On the one hand, why would the inner group of our administration try and take on Brighton’s answer to Arthur Skargill without leaving some room for manoeuvre. Whilst on the other hand, why would a union be alienating the electorate by going on strike and ruining everyone’s summer. Not a good move by either side I wouldn’t have thought, and the only people who are enjoying this fiasco will be the Conservative and Labour opposition.

They are obviously waiting to chew up the pieces of the Green Administration rather than stepping in now and forming an alliance to take control and get things back to normal.

I actually feel sorry for Jason Kitkat, who with no experience whatsoever in running anything, has been plunged in at the deep end and in fairness is doing his best. Not an easy task when 9 of your own councillors vote in favour of the strike which is threatening to cripple our city.

Worse still, can anyone please tell me what Caroline Lucas is up to? Recently I have seen her pledging her support to a bunch of spoilt brats intent on smashing up Sussex University. Showing her solidarity with those saving a tree at the Seven Dials. Showing solidarity with a group of demonstrators purporting to be anti-fascists, many of whom didn’t look as though they would know what the word meant. A day in which an innocent Brighton resident lost the sight of one eye from a missile thrown by one of these mindless idiots, and traders yet again had their livelihoods affected. She has recently been prancing around The House of Commons sporting a T-shirt with the slogan “NO MORE PAGE THREE”. Now we have her supporting a strike against her own administration which affects all her constituents. I can only presume that as she is the only Green MP in the land that there is nobody to tell her what she should be doing. Well Caroline I am sure there are many of your constituents, who having observed recent behaviour, will have various suggestions for you, most of which you will not like at all.

all this is of great comfort to those trying to make a living in our city centre and I am sure they are all as ecstatic as the Greens, who are revelling in the news that bus travel increased by a reported 5% last year.

I wonder how much trade dropped by? Oh but of course that’s down to the Olympics, the Queens Jubilee and the weather they tell us. So that’s all right then, phew, it had me worried for a minute.

The College is hosting a Hospitality Jobs Fair at its Pelham Street Central Campus on Wednesday 26th June from 1pm to 4pm where 18 vacancies are waiting to be filled by a range of local employers including Real Patisserie, Rendezvous Casino, The Coal Shed, The Parlour Café in Brighton Marina and the Crown & Anchor in Shoreham Ben said: “These vacancies are giving young people a great opportunity to experience true workplaces.

“My apprenticeship’s been really enjoyable and I’ve got to experience loads of different things”, said The Ginger Pig’s apprentice, Cory Vernon. “With something like catering, I think it’s much better to be doing an apprenticeship because you learn a lot more by doing things hands-on and also get the chance to earn some money while you’re learning and generally getting the gist of how things work. I can’t fault it really.”

DEACON AND RICHARDSON ARCHITECTS celebrate 30 years of practice in Brighton next month. Alan Deacon and Chris Richardson first met in 1973 when they both started their Architectural Education at Brighton Polytechnic. A close friendship developed and in 1983 they decided to merge their practices.

Since 1973 they have completed over 3,500 jobs in and around Brighton and employed over 100 people. The scope of work has been varied and has included residential, commercial, educational and medical projects.

The most recent project of note was completed a month ago at Chailey Heritage School. This was the refurbishment and extension of a 200 year old workhouse to form a new Life Skills Centre which was recently opened

by the Duchess of Cornwall. The Practice is currently designing an eco-house to a sustainable standard that has not yet been achieved in Brighton.

Alan and Chris have always had a very strong nurturing ethos, 15 young architects have qualified under their guidance.

Alan has now semi-retired to Devon but is still involved with certain projects.

The practice is very much a family business. Chris and Alan married sisters, Sara and Alison, and their respective sons Toby and Tim are training to become architects. Toby works full time in the office and Tim works during the holidays. In fact all members of staff are considered ‘family’ and to mark this auspicious occasion they are all going to celebrate the birthday with a weekend in France.

ON SATURDAY 20TH APRIL it was a very proud day for football in Brighton; the day when Brighton and Hove Albion achieved a stunning result of 6-1 against Blackpool and the day when local charity, The Whitehawk Inn, was awarded £2,000 from The Football Association.

The funds were raised by the FA Community Shield which allocates equal sections of the fund to the 124 eligible clubs, those that participated from the First Round Proper of The FA Cup, last season, who then donate to community initiatives of its choice.

Stadium, recognised the importance of The Whitehawk Inn's ongoing, dedicated work to invest in local people. A spokesperson for the charity said; "The future of so many local people depends on support such as this. Without it, the charity would simply be unable to continue its essential work for the people of Brighton and Hove. The Whitehawk Inn is hugely grateful."

The Football Association, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and is to cap the commemorations off with a major Gala Dinner in London this October. The FA will use the event and the whole FA 150 year to underline its not-for-profit commitment to supporting football since 1863.

FIVE APPRENTICESHIPS will be reserved for young care leavers in Brighton and Hove as part of a package of support to help make the often difficult transition to adult life.

Proposals being considered by Brighton and Hove City Council Policy & Resources Committee today will help improve opportunities for care leavers.

The move follows consultation with young people both in care and who have left care on what the council and its partners could provide to boost employment and pre-employment opportunities. Foster carers, residential care providers, social workers and personal advisers have also been consulted.

The young care leavers will be guaranteed an interview where it’s been identified that they meet the required standards.

BHCC aims to provide work placements and apprenticeships for an average of 70 young people aged 16-19 years each year over the next 3 years. All key council services now offer work experience and taster days. Placements are underway across the council for young people in care and leaving care.

Each young person in care post-16 and all care leavers can now have a Personal Opportunities Plan developed in

partnership with the individual highlighting any obstacles in accessing employment and training. The plan will also detail the tailored support package.

Two advice posts within BHCC’s 16 Plus Support Team have been set up to provide specialist assistance including help with CV’s and job applications, interview preparation and practice, identifying future choices and building confidence and motivation.

These posts also provide targeted advice and guidance support to young people in care and care leavers not in education, employment or training (NEET), supporting and engaging them in exploring their post16 options.

Financial assistance is also guaranteed to assist care leavers with apprenticeship and work placement associated expenses such as travel costs, interview and/or work clothing.

Assistance can also be provided to enable young people to reach the desired entry level requirements for apprenticeships where they fall short of these.

Penny Thompson, Brighton and Hove City Council chief executive, said: "The decisions young people make between 16 and 21 years have a huge impact on their future lives.

We want to support young people to make a successful transition to independent living, helping them to meet their potential, achieve their abilities, hopes and aspirations.”

Dance World Cup comes to Brighton

THE DANCE WORLD CUP 2013 is taking place in Brighton & Hove at the Brighton Dome complex from 1-6 July. It is the first time a mainland UK destination has been chosen to host the event which is designed to bring young performers from around the globe together through the language of dance.

The event is expected bring economic benefit in excess of £2.5 million to the city. A recordbreaking 3,000 competitors from over 24 countries have already registered to take part in the event, which last year attracted 2,000 participants to Austria.

Entrants aged from 3-25 years will compete in an array of dance genres including ballet, national, modern, jazz, show dance, tap, song and dance, street and

hip hop. Each year over 18,000 dancers take part in a series of heats in their own countries to qualify for a place in the final competition which is seen as the pièce de résistance for the best children and youth dancers in the world.

An opening ceremony led by Brighton and Hove mayor, Denise Cobb, will see competitors, with their national flags and mascots dressed in national costume, gathered on the lawn of the Royal Pavilion on 1 July at 3.45 pm.

Local school children have been invited to attend the event over the course of the week and are encouraged to champion competitors from other countries as well as cheering on the England team.

A gala performance to showcase the competition winners will take place at the Brighton Dome Concert Hall on Saturday 6 July 2013.

BHCC’s new assistant chief executive, Paula Murray, was instrumental in the bid to bring the event to the city and the VisitBrighton Convention Bureau has acted as conduit providing support to the organisers, facilitating accommodation bookings and arranging Greeters to welcome people to the city. All event participants will be given city maps and a VisitBrighton ‘Delegate Deals’ card which offers a range of discounts at stores and restaurants across the city.

UK Dance World Cup organiser, Jo Arnett, says: “Brighton is the perfect place for the

competition’s first foray to the UK. The city’s vibrancy and diversity is in-keeping with the ethos of the competition and I’m sure the young people will enjoy exploring the great assortment of entertainment and activities on offer during their visit.”

Paula Murray adds: “We’re very happy to have brought this important event to the city and look forward to giving the young dancers a warm welcome. There are so many different types of dance and the competition is an ideal platform to highlight what’s on offer. The event is a fantastic showcase for the skills and dedication of these young people in their chosen sport and should inspire our own budding dancers to aim high."

Brighton’s newest member of the NSPCC 1600 Club BRIGHTON-BASED international VAT consultancy, Accordance, is one of the more recent additions to the list of 1600 Club Challenge participants in the city having only signed up to the challenge in July last year. They’ve made a good start; raising £900 so far.

Accordance was founded in 2005, in response to Europe’s rapidly changing VAT situation. Their aim is to simplify the experience of cross-border VAT for businesses trading in Europe through a policy of practical engagement with clients and their indirect tax issues.

Natasha Arnold, Compliance manager at Accordance, was introduced to the Club by an existing member. Natasha explained: “We wanted to support a charity that everyone in the office would want to raise money for. We’ve not been members that long but so far we’ve held some bake sales which have proved very popular, and at the end of November we held an ‘Accordance Day of Fun’ event where we all came to work in fancy dress, games took place and there was a food sale. We’ve also all dressed up as our managing director.

“We have also set up an ‘Accordance Library’ and asked everyone to bring in books and DVDs which have then been loaned out to staff for a small fee. This has proved really popular and once our library finishes at the end of March we will be asking people to donate any unwanted films and books and selling them around our building.

Experts praise Hove cycle lane A ‘COPENHAGEN-STYLE’ cycle lane in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, has been praised by cycling bodies and experts.

Cyclists have said it makes them feel safer and more are using it.

Plaudits for the scheme, which opened in 2011, have come from the national sustainable transport charity SUSTRANS along with the Cycle Touring Club – one of the UK’s main cycling pressure groups.

The comments are now being included in a city council bid for a national award for the route.

SUSTRANS said: “This is a bold and innovative scheme that aims to bring something of the level of provision that is commonplace in Denmark and the Netherlands.”

The CTC said such lanes, which separate bikes from traffic, were “about the best that can be done under current highway design regulations.”

Local campaign group Bricycles said: “The facilities are good for the less confident cyclist.”

They praised measures such as traffic lights at the Upper Drive which give cyclists a head start on cars.

The supportive comments are included in the council’s bid for a prize for achievements in cycling, at the National Transport Awards, in October.

The 1.8km route, thought to be the longest of its kind in the UK, runs from Dyke Road

to the Upper Drive. The council provided two thirds of the £940k cost, the remainder coming from SUSTRANS. It features a generous cycle track on each side of the road, between 1.5m2m wide, separated from the road by a kerb.

Monitoring has shown a 30 per cent increase in cycle journeys along the route, with a roughly threefold increase in the proportion of cyclists who regard the route as safe – now around 80 per cent.

Vehicle speeds have slowed significantly says the council, largely due to the road’s width being reduced. Officials say this deters overtaking which previously saw cars often travelling at 45mph in the 30mph stretch.

In the meantime a safety audit commissioned by the council is making suggestions for a number of minor tweaks.

These range from altering signage or surface textures, to trimming a tree to improve light on a zebra crossing.

City council executive director Geoff Raw said: “It’s good to hear more people regard this route as safe, there’s less speeding and as a result more cycling.

“We need to make one or two tweaks but generally people like it and are using it in increasing numbers. Hopefully we can extend it in future, making it even more useful and popular.”

The Hove cycle lane is modelled on those often seen in northern Europe, including Copenhagen in Denmark.

The label is Brighton based with its own studio in Eastbourne. The label has already signed up its first 3 artists.

CMP Artists intend to sign and showcase about 30 new artists in the first year. Hopefully some of the artists will develop their careers with CMP Artists but some will go on to other

things and that is just the nature of the musical beast. Technology has made the world a much smaller place these days but CMP Artists will be run from Brighton, one of the UK’s major and vibrant musical cities.

The agenda is to help showcase the enormous talent of musical artists that is about in Brighton and also all over Sussex. Phil Davies, the cofounder of CMP Artists said: “If in 5 years’ time people who I respect and who love music can turn round to me and say CMP Artists has put out some great music then that would be success. There really needs to be an outlet for new talent that has been shut out by the system and I hope CMP Artists will be that outlet.”

Mayoral support for Sussex Festival of Music BRIGHTON & HOVE’S new Mayor, Cllr Denise Cobbs, has consented to attend and open the Sussex Festival of Music and in particular the Jazz supper on Friday 21st of June.

Helping the homeless to smile again A local cosmetic dentist, Dr Mehdi Pourani, decided to take the issue of homelessness into his own hands to prove change was possible.

DR POURANI, founder of Clinic Nine, a cosmetic poly clinic in Hove, began the experiment by approaching Emmaus in Portslade, a sheltered housing project for homeless people. “I’ve always believed in a hand-up rather than a hand-out,” said Dr Pourani. “As soon as I met Matt there was something about him that captured me. I really wanted to do something for him, and I believed in him.”

It was also a way for Dr Pourani to encourage other local professionals to help with the problem and put the 5-10% free time most businesses have to good use.

The homeless charity Emmaus introduced Dr Pourani to 27 year old Matt Blenkinsop, who had lost his home as the result of a previous drink and drug habit. “He wasn’t confident enough to smile or look anyone in the eye,” recalls Dr Pourani. “And his teeth were in a really bad way.”

Matt, a qualified chef, was initially suspicious. Matt recollects his initial thoughts: “I thought why would someone want to help me in that way? I haven’t exactly deserved this chance after what I’ve done in the past.”

Dr Pourani said: “At first we just hung out, it helped that we both supported Arsenal.”

There were three key aspects of Matt’s life that Dr Pourani wanted to focus on changing; health, physical looks and to encourage a mental belief in himself.

“It was really difficult at first,” says Dr Pourani. “Matt was unreliable, and I must have spent 9 months, 50-60 hours just talking to him and trying to get him motivated.”

Step one of the transformation involved repairing Matt’s badly damaged teeth. This involved treating gum infections before fitting Matt with cosmetic veneers, crowns,

bridges and finally whitening.

Matt then underwent a face skin peel to treat his skin and was treated by an orthopaedic consultant for a recurring trouble with his knee following an accident earlier in life. This was followed up with physiotherapy to treat the problem.

To further improve Matt’s physical looks, Dr Pourani took Matt to a hair stylist and fitted him with a whole new wardrobe.

After further consultation and motivation, Dr Pourani could see a real change in Matt’s attitude: “He became more confident and

more reliable. He finally started to believe in himself a bit more. With further help, Matt managed to get his own House in Lewes. This meant he was now closer to his daughter and got back in touch with his brother and sister and started to form a family that he couldn’t before. I still remain good friends with Matt, I feel like a godfather to him. He has a full-time job, a house, a serious girlfriend, I couldn’t be happier with the way his life has changed.

“It’s been a great learning curve for me too, which I find hard to describe. It’s been fascinating to have been part of Matt’s level of development and the transformation I’ve seen is incredible.”

Matt described how he feels after his journey: “Having my own place has given me such a level of independence. It’s been a long time coming to get to where I am now. I have a sense of achievement and I can finally move on and achieve bigger and better things.

“I am so grateful of everything Mehdi has done for me and I hope to make him proud with everything I do in the future.”

A NEW DR. MARTENS STORE in Brighton was officially opened last week with an exclusive launch party in the Prince Albert Street shop. Brighton’s media and VIPs were treated to a night of entertainment whilst browsing the full range of footwear and clothing, including the iconic 1460 boot and new Tattoo and Vegan ranges.

Entertainment for the evening included the unveiling of a new in-store artwork by local artist The Screen Prince, which recreates Brighton’s famous West Pier using boot leather and laces from the Dr. Marten’s factory. Shoppers later ventured to The Mesmerist for the after-party, with performances from local bands Abi Wade and The Physics House Band. Guests also enjoyed rockabilly haircuts from a traditional barber and a seaside inspired dinner menu, including a bespoke Dr. Martens ice cream flavour.

To celebrate their launch week Dr. Martens were also on-site in the Style and Wellbeing Zone at People’s Day on Saturday 15 June. The DM team offered a free shoe customisation bar, where shoppers of all ages could makeover their footwear. The new Dr. Martens Sherpa Van was also on-hand, with music and an in built photo booth for passers-by to snap a picture with family and friends.

Investment Performance Bearing in mind that your money needs to potentially last 35 years, you will need to look at some potential growth from the investment of your money. To obtain some growth you must also take some risk with how the money is invested. Stock markets can provide the potential for growth but unpredictable market conditions can seriously affect the values. When markets are increasing its good news as your capital should be growing, and if taking income,

your investment is less likely to erode. In falling markets the opposite is the case.

Low Interest Rates In the past when interest rates have been higher, people have held more of their capital in cash deposits as the returns have been sufficient to meet their on-going income needs. In the current low interest rate environment which has seen the Bank Base Rate sit at 0.5% for the last four years, people have the choice of either depleting capital or take some additional risk in order to generate some capital growth.

Inflation Risk This can have a large impact on your retirement plans. It can creep up on you without realising the impact that it has on the buying power of your money. With an average inflation rate of 3% over a 30 year period, a £100,000 sum will depreciate to the equivalent of £44,198.

There are a number of options available to investors in retirement which can potentially address income shortfalls, but inevitably the prospect of higher returns and higher levels of income do go hand in hand with an increase in the amount of risk taken. The Good Henry Cavill proves a perfect choice as Superman/Clark – he has the Christopher Reeve twinkle in his eye and a certain stillness that makes the character work.

Similarly, Shannon is terrific as Zod (he’s a lot angrier than the Terence Stamp version) and Adams makes a feisty Lois, while there’s strong support from Crowe and Costner as Superman’s two dads, as well as colourful turns

Worth seeing?

Zack Snyder is officially forgiven for the disaster that was Sucker Punch; Man of Steel is a hugely enjoyable, emotionally engaging blockbuster that delivers plenty of super-powered bang for your buck. Highly recommended.

Goyer) is excellent, choosing to tell the story of Superman’s childhood via a series of moving and effective flashback scenes, while also adding a number of interesting tweaks to the story (such as the substitute for the Fortress of Solitude) that work well; there are also a number of hints dropped throughout that suggest exciting possibilities next time round (keep your eye on the various logos that appear). On top of that, the production design is extremely impressive, with some enjoyably inventive touches, particularly in the Krypton scenes.

The only real problem with the film is the underwritten Lois/Superman relationship, largely because the script forgets to include a scene of them falling in love, so the romance seems to come out of nowhere. However, that’s a small quibble in the grand scale of things.

Nutrition labels to make it easier to eat healthily EATING HEALTHILY has been made a little bit easier as a new consistent nutritional label has been launched this week by Public Health Minister Anna Soubry.

This comes after research shows that people can end up bewildered by the different Nutrition labels on food. The new label aims to make it easier for people to make healthier choices.

The consistent system will combine both traffic light colour-coding and nutritional information to show how much fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar, and calories are in food products.

MARS UK, Nestle UK, PepsiCo UK, and Premier Foods have announced that they will join all the major retailers – including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, the Co-operative and Waitrose – in using the consistent label on their products.

Manufacturer McCain Foods – which already uses front of pack – will be using the consistent label too.

Public Health Minister Anna Soubry said: “The UK already has the largest number of products using a front of pack label in Europe but we know that people get confused by the variety of labels that are used. Research shows that, of all the current schemes, people like this label the most and they can use the information to make healthier choices.

“We all have a responsibility to tackle the challenge of obesity, including the food industry. By having all major retailers and manufacturers signed up to the consistent label, we will all be able to see at a glance what is in our food – this is why I want to see more manufacturers signing up and using the label.”

Obesity and poor diet cost the NHS billions of pounds every year. Making small changes to people’s diet can have a big impact to their health and could stop people getting serious illnesses – such as heart disease – later in life.

People will be able to use the colours to understand the levels of nutrients in the food they are eating. The labels are not designed to demonise foods with lots of reds but to have people consider what they are eating and make sure it’s part of a balanced diet.

People will also at a glance be able to compare the same kinds of foods and see if there’s a healthier option – for example, if they are buying a ready meal.

An evening at Crowns Brighton Written by LYNN JAMES As you enter the bar you are met with a warm ambience, which is very unlike what you would have walked into when it was known as ‘The Easy Bar’ over 12 months ago. It has wooden polished floors comfy seating with plush orange cushions, a beautiful fireplace and, if you do decide you prefer the fresh air but not the cold, then outside the bar there is adequate seating, which has a transparent awnings to protect you from the wind and rain with big flame heaters to keep you cosy.

We were met by bar owner Phil Fossey who welcomed us with a big smile and a firm handshake; which is always a good start. I have to say he has made a world of difference to the pub and is very fundamental in its growing popularity with all age groups.

After ordering, our meal arrived promptly. I had the Chicken Ceaser Salad which was full of beautiful pieces of chicken with a sprinkling of delicious croutons and dressing. My guest went for burger & chips which looked delicious and game with a generous salad.

All in all my opinion of Crowns was fantastic, Phil is great company and his bar staff are really friendly and helpful.

There is also a good size tv for those who love to watch sport and at weekends there is a variety of live music on. On Fridays, musicians are welcome and a full range of Rekorderlig which includes Strawberry & Lime ‘on tap’ which is really refreshing.

“High levels of diet-related chronic diseases in the UK, including heart disease, mean it’s essential we have clear and consistent food labeling so people can make healthy choices.

“We’re delighted all the major supermarkets are committed to the scheme and look forward to more food manufacturers signing up.”

Businesses that have signed up to using the new label today already account for more than 60 per cent of the food that is sold in the UK.

LV's top eight whiplash whoppers DESPITE FALLING accident rates, compensation claims for whiplash and other personal injuries have hit epidemic proportions.

British insurers now receive 1,500 claims for whiplash every day and it is estimated that up to 60% of these claims are exaggerated or fraudulent.

Here are the top 8 whiplash whoppers to date: 1. The Facebook Fraudster. LV= received a car insurance claim from a third party claiming she and her daughter were injured when our insured went into the back of her car. The lady later posted on Facebook that she'd been in a car accident that day and it had shaken her up. When a concerned friend enquired after her daughter, Mrs F replied that she was very relieved that her daughter hadn't been in the car at the time. When challenged with this information, she quickly changed her story.

This claim would have cost LV= an extra £2,500 if the fraud had not been detected.

2. The Silver Screen Scammer. Miss S claimed that she had to cancel her holiday as she had sustained a whiplash injury and was unable to travel. She had travel insurance with LV= and wanted to claim for the cost of the entire holiday. When asked how she had been injured, Miss S replied that she'd got whiplash after jumping back in surprise at seeing a tiger

jump out of the water - while at the cinema watching Life of Pi in 3D. Claim amount requested: £1,000.

3. The CCTV Slam-on. When Mr C, a cashfor-crash scammer, slammed on his brakes in front of a van he did not realise that his antics were being caught on camera. The van belonged to a CCTV installer who had installed a video camera in his rear-view mirror.

When the vehicles collided, the camera had a clear view of the inside of the car showing that there was one driver and no passengers.

However, when Mr C submitted his claim for compensation, he claimed that there were several other people in the car who were all injured. When challenged with the footage, he quickly disappeared. The total value of this claim was £20,000.

4. The Fibbing Fighter. Mr F claimed that he was suffering severe whiplash after our insured went into the back of his vehicle. He claimed that his symptoms were extreme and that his doctor had said he would be out of action for several months and would have to give up the gym. He complained that this was a particular problem for him as he was a professional boxer.

A quick internet search revealed records of him competing in the ring a mere six weeks after the alleged collision where he was well enough to win a match. Suffice to say he quickly withdrew

his claim and gave up the fight. This claim would have cost LV= £10,000 if the fib had not been detected.

5. The Luxury Goods Liar. Miss L claimed that when she was injured in her accident the impact had been so great that it had broken her Gucci sunglasses. When asked for proof of ownership, Miss L sent in a pair of broken imitation shades and claimed she had lost the receipt. Despite her protestations, our loss adjusters confirmed that the shades were not genuine and therefore worth less than the cost of the postage to send them in. Not content with this, Miss L then claimed she had also lost a Pandora bracelet at the scene of the accident, which would have to be replaced. She submitted a hand written receipt for this bracelet which turned out to be just another poor quality fake.

Claim amount requested: £1,000.

6. The Baby Blagger. A woman who had recently given birth claimed she had been in a car accident and sustained whiplash while her friend was driving. On inspection of her medical records, it transpired that she could not possibly have been in the car as she was in hospital giving birth at the time. This claim would have cost LV= £3,000.

7. The Two-Pints-of-Lager-and-a-Tall-Story Trickster. When Mr T saw a few bricks falling off a truck and the police being called, he saw

his opportunity to cash in. Mr T claimed that he had been driving past the truck, which was insured by LV=, when the bricks had fallen onto their car. He wanted £3,500 compensation for vehicle damage and personal injuries. When LV= checked the police report, it transpired that the two scammers had not been driving at all but had been sat drinking in a beer garden with a clear view of the incident. Mr T had in fact gone over and talked to the police about the incident he had witnessed and they recorded his name on the report.

8. The Persistent Perjurer. Mr P claimed that he had been hit by a car that was insured

by LV= and requested compensation for his injuries and the damage to his vehicle. When LV= engineers inspected the vehicle they found that the car had not been in a collision at all and that Mr P had simply reversed the car into a wall. What he did not realise is that the damage from the wall was much higher than a car bumper and the damage quickly gave him away.

When challenged in court, Mr P insisted that he had collided with the other vehicle and signed a witness statement to this fact. He later admitted he had lied under oath and was found guilty of perjury, which resulted in a custodial sentence.

The total value of this case including legal costs was £120,000.

Two thirds of female drivers at risk due to poor car maintenance A staggering 67 per cent of female drivers in the UK are putting themselves at risk on the road by never checking their brake fluid levels, according to the latest research from countrywide independent garage scheme Trust My Garage.

The Scheme, boasting over 2,000 member garages, carried out a straw poll of 100 female drivers to see what regular maintenance checks they carry out on their vehicles and found that the vast majority never carry out any maintenance themselves. Among the more startling results, 63 per cent of female drivers stated that they never check their engine coolant, and just under half of those questioned never check something as simple as their oil levels.

It is recommended that motorists check their fluid levels routinely to ensure they remain at an operational level. They should also be checked before any long journey.

Brake fluid is normally clear with a gold or straw coloured hue. If it is black, it may be contaminated and have to be replaced.

Although vehicles typically only have to have brake fluid replaced every two years, it is advised that the levels and colour be checked at least every month. Only four per cent of respondents in Trust My Garage’s survey said they carry out regular brake fluid checks. If brake fluid is not at the correct level, motorists are at risk of brake failure and are putting themselves in danger of potential crashes while on the road.

Engine coolant should be checked every week to ensure that there is no leaking, which

could lead to a potential breakdown. An undetected coolant leak can cause a car to overheat when in motion or in heavy traffic. It is very important to check the engine coolant with the engine cold as there is a serious risk of scalding if the engine is at its normal working temperature.

It is also advised that oil leavels be checked weekly. If oil levels do go down below the “low” mark, drivers could be faced with a damaged engine and potentially a costly repair. Only five per cent of female drivers polled said they check their engine coolant and oil levels every week.

While it is recommended that motorists take their vehicles to a trusted garage for regular servicing, there are basic checks they can do themselves to ensure they remain safe on the road and avoid expensive repair bills.

Terry Gibson at Trust My Garage said: “It is astonishing to see just how many motorists are failing to carry out basic car maintenance tasks. Simple tasks like checking your brake fluid and engine coolant levels and taking your car to a Trust My Garage member for regular servicing not only keeps you safe while on the road, but it could help you to avoid expensive repair bills should something go seriously wrong with your vehicle.”

On a more positive note, female drivers are doing more to check that their tyres are fit for purpose before setting off on journeys.

Of those surveyed, 33 per cent stated that they check their tyre tread depth and tyre pressures once every six months. Ideally tyre pressures should be checked at least

monthly. High mileage drivers should check their tyres more frequently. As well as tread depth and pressure, it is a good idea to look out for uneven tread wear which could be an indication of a more serious problem – or incorrectly inflated tyres.

Jan Lord, Business Development Manager at Guide Bridge, which calls itself the most ‘female friendly garage in Ashton,’ said: “A large proportion of our customers are women; there is around a 70:30 split and I think this is because we have female faces in the garage which makes female drivers feel more at ease when entering a garage environment. We hold regular workshops for women to teach them the basics about their cars. Because of our approach to female drivers, more of our female customers are pro-active in addressing any initial problems with their cars, which is saving them money in the long term.”

Brighton & Hove Albion target Matthew Upson

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION and Leeds United are both interested in signing defender Matthew Upson, according to a report.

Upson was released by Stoke City earlier this month after only making two appearances for the Potters last season.

The 34-year-old's failure to break into the first team at the Britannia Stadium saw him join Brighton on loan during the January transfer window, where he went on to make 18 appearances.

According to the Daily Star, the Championship side could make a move to bring the former England international back to the Amex Stadium on a permanent basis.

Leeds United could also offer Upson a deal, as boss Brian McDermott looks to rebuild his squad at Elland Road.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE Albion boss Gus Poyet's disciplinary hearing has been adjourned until later this week after he did not attend.

Poyet was suspended by the Seagulls last month, along with his assistant Mauricio Taricco - whose suspension has since been lifted - and first-team coach Charlie Oatway.

He stayed away "for disputed legal reasons" according to a club statement.

The hearing was delayed to provide him with "a final opportunity to attend", the statement added.

Brighton's separate internal process involving former Albion player Oatway continues.

Over the weekend, Poyet suggested that he hoped his future would be resolved as soon as possible.

He told BBC Match of the Day: "Unfortunately, we cannot comment for legal reasons.

"We need to wait and see. I hope it's going to be resolved this week."

Asked if, with hindsight, he would have conducted himself differently, Poyet replied: "No. It's me. It's the way I am.

THE AGENT of Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk, who has been linked with Brighton and Hove Albion, claims to have fielded no offers.

The Seagulls were strongly linked with the Holland U21 international in January, but no deal was put in place.

It has been suggested that they will return to the table this summer, with Van Dijk having maintained his high standards over the second half of the 2012/13 campaign.

Brighton, however, are currently distracted with the well-known issues
