Royal Sussex told to improve A&E ROYAL SUSSEX COUNTY HOSPITAL, which saw sustained pressure on A&E this winter, has been told to improve by inspectors.

Care Quality Commission inspectors went to the Royal Sussex County Hospital to follow up concerns over emergency care.

They found some patients could not wash and had no privacy, a lack of available beds affected patient welfare, and the hospital had not anticipated pressures.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust said it had taken action but more work needed to be done.

A report by inspectors said problems with privacy and dignity followed overcrowding because of the hospital's inability to move patients out of the emergency department to a ward bed.

New arrivals were being held in corridors, entrance halls, rooms and wards not designed for long stays.

A day surgery unit not set up for overnight stays held four men who had to share a toilet and sink, and four women who shared another, but there were no shower or washing facilities.

One patient said: "It was dreadful to not have a proper wash for three days."

Staff were unable to turn off or dim the lights at night, and it was difficult

for patients to sleep, inspectors heard.

Patients on corridors and in an ambulance area were not taken to a toilet, but had to use a bedpan in the "plaster room" which was cluttered, not clean and not designed for the purpose.

New Topshop store to come to Churchill Square CHURCHILL SQUARE SHOPPING CENTRE have announced that international fashion retailer Topshop will be opening a new store at the shopping centre.

Jason Kitcat OVER 1.5 MILLION Indian army soldiers served alongside British and other Commonwealth troops during World War I. The first Indian troops arrived in France in September 1914 to fight on the Western Front. Many were killed or wounded, and the casualties were so great in number that thousands had to be sent back from France to towns on the south coast of England to be treated. Brighton was one of these towns that offered to help nurse casualties.

During the war about 12,000 wounded Indian soldiers were moved to makeshift hospitals around Brighton, famously including the Royal Pavilion, the Dome and the Corn Exchange.

A fascinating exhibition in the Royal Pavilion shows how Indian soldiers were housed and nursed in the palace during the war. And just outside the palace at the entrance to Pavilion Gardens, the Pavilion Gateway stands as a gift from the people of India to the Brighton, as a thank you for caring for their soldiers.

And the ‘Chattri’ memorial stands on the Downs near Patcham, on the spot where 53

Brighton Dome was used as a military hospital for Indian soldiers during WWI

Indian soldiers were cremated and buried after passing away in the city’s hospitals. The Chattri was built and unveiled in 1921 in memory of all Indian soldiers who died during World War I, and it overlooks the Downs and the city. Each year there is a memorial service organised by local community groups at the monument to commemorate them.

This year’s Chattri Memorial Service is at

2:30pm this Sunday 9th June, and I’m honoured to be attending. The ceremony is a fascinating part of our multicultural history, and an important way to remember the contributions made by Indian and other soldiers during World War I. POLICE ARE APPEALING for witnesses to an assault on a 32-year-old man near the doughnut statue on Brighton beach on Sunday, 2 June.

The victim, from London, was sitting on the beach with a friend at about 2am when attacked and received minor injuries to his face.

Police are seeking four suspects: The first suspect is described as a white man, aged 20-28, 6' 2'' and of stocky build, with spiky short brown hair. He was wearing a red shirt with the sleeves rolled up and blue jeans.

The second man was white, aged 20-28, 5' 6'' and of muscular build, with short brown hair. He was wearing a white T shirt and dark jeans.

The third was described as a white man, aged 20-28, 5' 6'' of slim build and with short

The local man in his 30s was enjoying a night out in Brighton when he was assaulted between 3.45am and 4am on Saturday, 1 June.

He is described as a black, in his 20s, about 5' 10" tall, medium build wearing a flat cap baseball cap, white t-shirt and black jacket

light brown hair. He was wearing a white T shirt and dark jeans.

The fourth man was described as a white, aged 20-28, 5' 5'' of muscular build. He was wearing a black T shirt and dark jeans.

All the men were seen to run off along Kings Road towards the Brighton pier after the attack.

Detective Constable Aran Boyt said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a man who was visiting Brighton. I would urge anyone with information to come forward to help us identify those involved."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting serial 0145 of 2/6.

Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Three men from London, aged 27, 32 and 23 were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and affray and they have been bailed until 1 July.

DS Cheryl Lewendon said: "This was a nasty assault and I would appeal to those who were in the area, and there were a number of people, to come forward to help us in our inquiry and help us identify and trace the fourth man.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting serial 0238 of 1/6.

Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A NUMBER OF VEHICLES were damaged, including four police cars, when a van that failed to stop for police in Brighton was brought to a stop on the A27, near Selmeston, on Sunday June 2.

Police were alerted to a grey Transit van that was being driven erratically in North Street, Brighton around 3.45pm. A few minutes later it was spotted by police, but drove off. During the pursuit it was involved in a number of damage only collisions with police and private vehicles.

It was finally brought to a stop using stop sticks to puncture its wheels at the Drusillas roundabout about 4.15pm.

Chief Inspector Jayne Dando said: "Thankfully, nobody was injured in this incident, but it has caused a fair amount

of disruption along the route and it was necessary to close the A27 at Selmeston for a while in order to remove the damaged vehicles. I appreciate that this was an inconvenience on a nice, sunny Sunday afternoon and I should like to thank everyone for their patience while this was carried out.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 987 of 02/06."

A 35-year-old man from West Drayton was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, failing to stop and theft. A 25-yearold man from Slough was arrested on suspicion of being carried in a stolen vehicle.

Both were in custody on Sunday evening.

CRAIG ALDIS, 29, is wanted by police after he was recalled to prison in April.

He is described as white, of stocky/muscular build, about 5' 10" tall, with short brown hair. He is believed to be a body builder and has a tattoo of a smoking skull on his left arm.

Detective Sergeant Dave Osland said: "Aldis has links to the Brighton and Lewes areas and was last known to work in the Hassocks and Bolney areas where he was employed as a roofer.

"Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101, quoting serial 0569 of 10 April. Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."

Rabies is spread through bites, scratches or a lick on broken skin from an infected animal. It is nearly always fatal. The World Health Organization estimates that between 40,000 and 70,000 human deaths occur worldwide each year following a bite from a rabid animal. Most of these deaths occur in developing countries, particularly in Africa and South East Asia.

Advice for Travellers Vaccination is recommended for those going to risk areas that will be remote and more than 24 hours away from a reliable source of vaccine. Even when pre-exposure vaccines have been received urgent medical advice should be sought after any animal bite. If you have not had a course of pre – exposure rabies you will need a treatment called Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) within 24 hours of being bitten. In many countries the availability of rabies RIG is scarce, therefore it is recommended you get a full course of rabies vaccines before you travel.

Three doses of rabies vaccine should be given on Day 0, Day 7 and Day 21 or 28 prior to your trip.

Councillor says Amex building redevelopment would boost St James’s Street A LEADING COUNCILLOR says redevelopment of the old Amex building in Edward Street, Brighton, would improve the fortunes of shops and businesses in nearby St James’s Street.

Speaking about the city council’s publication of a draft planning brief covering the site, chair of the Economic Development and Culture Committee Geoffrey Bowden

said: “There is nothing in the draft planning brief for the Amex site in Edward Street which represents a threat to St James’s Street or its traders – in fact, quite the reverse.”

The council says a redevelopment of the former Amex building would bring over 1000 office jobs to the location. There could also be over 60 new homes.

£800 fine for Brighton man and his music A BRIGHTON MAN is more than £800 worse off and has had his music making equipment seized following a noise nuisance prosecution by Brighton & Hove City Council.

Gareth Halsall, of Glynleigh, Ashton Rise, Brighton, was ordered to pay a fine, costs and victim surcharge totalling £807 by Brighton Magistrates last week.

Mr Halsall pleaded guilty to causing recurring noise nuisance with loud music, singing and shouting despite a series of warning letters and visits from the council’s environmental health team.

Mr Halsall’s music making equipment was seized in April in a joint operation by environmental health and the police.

Southern Water gets smart to deter thieves SECURITY AT HUNDREDS of Southern Water sites across the region has been beefed up thanks to an invisible security tagging system.

Called SmartWater, the product has been sprayed onto generators, cables and other equipment to deter thieves.

The system works by coating items in an invisible, long-lasting layer of liquid containing a unique chemical code. The liquid is only visible under ultraviolet light and cannot be washed off.

As well as identifying property and linking it back to specific sites and owners, SmartWater can also be used by police to identify criminals who come into contact with it – providing compelling evidence that can be used in court cases.

Local MP raises concerns over network rail bonuses SIMON KIRBY, Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown, has written to the Transport Minister Norman Baker MP in order to express his concerns over the bumper bonuses being awarded to Network Rail bosses.

It has been announced that the Chief Executive of Network Rail, Sir David Higgins, will receive a bonus of almost £100,000, despite the organisation’s failure to meet some of its performance targets. Other senior figures are also set to receive bonuses of up to £67,000.

Mr Kirby recently set up his ‘Better Trains for Brighton’ campaign, in response to frequent complaints from his constituents over

the poor rail services in the area.

Mr Kirby said: “Since becoming Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown I have been in frequent correspondence with Network Rail to make them aware of the serious concerns people in the city have over the standard of rail services they have to put up with. It is clear to me that Network Rail must accept some of the responsibility for these shortcomings, which is why these bonuses seem so remarkable. They are awarded on top of very substantial salaries, and many people in Brighton will be questioning whether an additional £100,000 in performance related pay is justified, given the size of the problem that persists.”

Brighton and Hove gay venues to now offer HIV tests

GAY AND BI-SEXUAL MEN are being offered HIV tests at selected venues in Brighton and Hove.

Outreach workers from the Terrence Higgins Trust are taking mouth swabs at bars, clubs, and saunas in the city, which has the highest rate of HIV infection in the UK outside London.

An estimated quarter of infected men in Brighton do not know they have the virus, mirroring UK-wide statistics.

People who take part in the tests will get their results within a week.

The outreach workers are also targeting men who have sex with men, but do not identify themselves as gay or bisexual.

The University of Brighton is leading the project, called Sialon II, in the UK. The aim is to gather new data on risk patterns, prevention needs, and the local prevalence of HIV. The project, which it is hoped could shape future HIV prevention work in Brighton and Hove, is being co-funded by Health Programme of the European Union, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.

Figures show 7.59 per 1,000 people [or 1,387 cases] have HIV in the city, compared with a UK average of 1.5 per 1,000 people.

Approximately 90% of the infections were in men, and sex between men was the most likely route of transmission, the

researchers said.

Nigel Sherriff, from the University of Brighton's Centre for Health Research, is coordinating the project in the UK. He said the researchers had been delighted with the co-operation of gay venues across the city.

"We are seeing already that this innovative testing method, as well as providing prevention information and condoms, is an important way of increasing access to HIV testing and ultimately contributes to reducing new infections and onward transmission," Dr Sherriff said.

"What this questionnaire can do is tell us things such as behavioural patterns, risk patterns, things like whether they've had STIs before, their perceptions of their risk and so on."

Shaun Cheeseboro, who went to a Brighton pub for a drink, agreed to be tested for HIV. "I'm one of those guilty people, I've made every excuse in the book not to get tested," he said.

"This was a great opportunity to do what I'd been putting off for five or six months.

"It's very convenient. The fact that they were right in this pub after work - I had no excuse not to, basically."

Sialon II is also being implemented in countries including Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland and Russia.

Undercliff Walk reopens THE UNDERCLIFF WALK behind Brighton Marina will re-open this week following monitoring of the cliffs over the winter months.

This section of the popular coastal walk has been closed since last December following six months of extremely wet weather which led to concerns about the stability of the cliffs.

The rain that fell in 2012 was similar in volume to the weather Brighton & Hove experienced in the run up to a major series of cliff falls in the winter of 2000/2001.

There have been no major cliff falls since that time and the council has carried out stabilisation work.

Since December a large amount of chalk and flint rubble has fallen onto the promenade over the winter which is being cleared prior to the reopening.

During the closure, Brighton & Hove City Council has taken the opportunity of clearing the netting of accumulations of rubble using abseilers to loosen the nets and shake out the chalk and flint. The council has also re-laid a section of the promenade behind the Marina boatyard to improve the

Councillor Pete West, chair of the city’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “We’re pleased to be able to re-open the Undercliff Walk along this stretch so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy our unique coastal path this summer.

“We have been working with geologists to help conserve the cliffs behind the Marina which form an important part of the city’s heritage. Visitors exploring the Undercliff Walk can view an information board showing how the cliffs here represent one of the best and most accessible records of ‘Ice Age’ climate change in north western Europe.”

Best of British raises thousands for charity

A CHARITY sporting lunch has raised over £32,000 to help sick children in Sussex.

The annual Best of British event was held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton on Friday 31 May and raised money for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity – the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit.

Over 400 corporate guests from businesses across Sussex attended the charity sporting lunch with special guest, 1966 World Cup winner, Norbert “Nobby Stiles” MBE who entertained the crowd, assisted by his son, comedian John Stiles.

The event was generously sponsored by Sussex based solicitors, Mayo Wynne Baxter.

Guests enjoyed a three-course meal with

wine, and money was raised for Rockinghorse through various fundraising activities during the afternoon, including a raffle and an auction, which included many sought-after items such as a 1966 England World Cup winning shirt, signed by nine of the heroes from the day.

Event organiser and Rockinghorse CEO, Ryan Heal, said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Nobby Stiles to the South coast for the fifth Best of British charity sporting lunch at the Grand Hotel.

AN OUTDOOR THEATRE that was the dream of a Brighton playwright who died recently has been supported by the city's council.

Adrian Bunting, 47, died of pancreatic cancer at the beginning of May. Before his death he asked five friends to continue his dream of building an amphitheatre in Brighton.

The site of the former bowling green in Dyke Road Park was shortlisted and has received the support of Brighton and Hove City Council.

Mr Bunting won the Best Theatre award at the Brighton Festival in 2011, for his play Kemble Riot.

In an interview just before he died, he said: "The bowling green was always the place that I'd dreamed of [for the theatre] it's a magical place."

James Payne, who is one of the friends to have taken on the Brighton Open Air Theatre (Boat) project, said Mr Bunting would have been "blown away" by its progress.

"His spirit was all about getting up and doing it," he said.

The cost of the project is estimated to be £50,000 and a charity event featuring comedians Stewart Lee and Tim Vine is being held at the Brighton Dome on 16 June to raise funds Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, who is the chairman of the economic development and culture committee, said the proposal offered an "exciting" addition to the city's arts scene.

Finalised architectural plans will be submitted to the council for planning permission.

The project's backers hope it will be completed in time for the Brighton Festival, in May 2014.

Council support this year’s Eco Technology Show in Brighton THE ECO Technology Show, the south east’s largest showcase for sustainable products and services - covering self-build and renovation, energy, transport and technology - is taking place at the Brighton Centre on 14 and 15 June 2013. Brighton & Hove City Council is supporting the event and staff from a range of departments will be on-hand to offer advice and demonstrate how eco technologies can save money and deliver genuine benefits to households, businesses and communities.

The Brighton Centre is a fitting base for the event, having been certified as a sustainable events venue for its ongoing efforts to reduce waste, energy and water consumption through its Sustainable Events Programme. Council leader, Jason Kitcat, will welcome delegates to the event’s opening conference, ‘Smart Business’, where the focus of discussion will be innovation and sustainable growth for future cities & business.

Resource depletion, population growth and climate change are key factors that will increasingly drive organisations to change their ways and the Eco Technology Show’s ethos is in-keeping with the council’s push to become a more sustainable city. Gay marriage?

‘I wanted to mark the successful passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill through its second reading in the House of Lords this week. It’s not law yet but there is hope that marriage will be open to same sex couples by next year.

Before the Civil Partnership Act 2004 gay and lesbian couples had no legal recognition at all. Matters were often dealt within the community itself without recourse to ‘the law’ or solicitors.

Since then more than 100,000 people have entered into a civil partnership in Britain. This far exceeds initial official estimates that between 11,000 and 22,000 couples would enter a civil partnership in the first five years. Sadly, by the end of 2011, 2.2% of male civil partnerships and 4.6% of female partnerships had ended in dissolution (divorce).

Progress to equality has been hard fought and

hopefully now, won. This means the legal recognition of the break up of a gay relationship exists as does the ongoing responsibilities to each other. I am hoping that civil partners (and all those thinking about marriage) will take advice about the the significance of these relationships and what happens when they break down.

Freedom Leisure stresses the importance of water safety FREEDOM LEISURE, the not-for-profit trust who operates three swimming pools in Brighton is ramping up their water safety offering following a report that found over half of children aged 7-11 can’t swim.

A recent report by swimming’s governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) found that more than 1.1 million primary schoolchildren in England – 51 per cent of children aged seven to 11 – are unable to swim the 25 metre length of a typical swimming pool unaided.

Freedom Leisure, who current have 1500 children enrolled on Swimming Lessons at the Prince Regent Swimming Complex, The King Alfred Leisure Centre and St Luke’s Swimming Pool is doing all it can to ensure children stay safe in the water.

In response to the shocking ASA report, the leisure operator is offering two, weeklong crash courses for non-swimmers during the school summer holidays.

“A week long course can make all the difference when it comes to staying safe in the water,” says Karen Rutter, Swim School Manager at Freedom Leisure in Brighton.

“We often find that non-swimming children have parents who also can’t swim. We encourage the parents to observe the lesson as they will learn a lot about water safety just by watching their children,” she adds.

As a result of the ASA campaign, the Freedom Leisure Swim Schools are also

introducing a personal safety award. “We’re aware that many children go on holiday over the summer break where they may be near lakes or swimming pools and even swimming in the sea,” says Rutter. “To help keep children safe we’ve introduced a personal safety award which all children enrolled in our swim schools will complete during the last three weeks of term.”

The Prince Regent Swimming Complex has also reintroduced the Challenge Award for children who can swim at least 50m. The Challenge award teaches basic lifesaving skills such as throwing a rope, swimming in clothing and treading water and is a comprehensive introduction to water safety.

Brighton professor believes burns victims could be able to heal themselves

A NEWLY APPOINTED PROFESSOR AND DIRECTOR at the University of Brighton, Anthony Metcalfe, believes that at one time humans had the ability to heal themselves after sustaining burns. Anthony believes that evidence of this includes the fact that the liver today can regenerate after injury – but the ability for skin to regenerate after burns was lost over time. Researchers are now looking into ways to restart the process again.

Scientists are hoping to find ways to help burns victims regenerate new nerves and skin and leave minimal disfiguring scars.

This is just one of the ambitions of international burns injuries expert Anthony Metcalfe, who has just taken up the appointments of Professor of Burns and Wounds at the University of Brighton and Director of Research at the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation.

The foundation is based at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead where the late Sir Archibald McIndoe pioneered treatments for WW2 burns victims and where the famous Guinea Pig Club was formed.

Professor Metcalfe said: "The idea that humans once had the ability to regenerate skin comes from the notion that there are organs in the human body that can regenerate, like the liver."

He said modern wounds from sharp objects, suffered in such incidents as car accidents, and from surgery, were not previously experienced in nature.

Today's injuries are treated in clean, sterile environments, which often lead to rapid healing – and subsequent scarring.

"The idea would be to try and create an environment in and around the wound, for the regenerative mechanisms to be encouraged to occur, hopefully reducing scarring in the process."

Professor Metcalfe will be working closely

with colleagues in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences and other University of Brighton departments to develop new techniques and approaches in regenerative medicine to improve the treatments.

He said "My role has been created to formalise, develop and promote the research partnership with the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation. We live in exciting times for interdisciplinary science, especially in the fields of burns, plastic and reconstructive surgery, wound healing, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

"The unique research endeavours that can be made under this exciting partnership will revolutionise potential therapies for wound healing, for reduction of scarring and restoration of normal tissue architecture for patients suffering from burns and other tissue injuries."

Professor Metcalfe said they would be building on Sir Archibald McIndoe's pioneering work: "We intend to take hold of his legacy and, using modern regenerative medicine techniques, develop new approaches to scar reduction in burns and wound healing and develop techniques to regenerate skin.

"As an innovator himself, Sir Archibald developed the groundwork of modern plastic surgery techniques and was probably one of the first clinicians to see the power of interdisciplinary approaches.

"Extensive burns injuries and the subsequent scarring that occurs creates not only physical problems for the patients, often requiring continued surgery, but there is a psychological impact that Sir Archibald recognised.

"We want to develop the holistic approach that he pioneered, using patient participatory research programmes, to gain a much better understanding of the impact of such injuries to patient's lifestyle.

City celebrates its People’s Day power

BRIGHTON & HOVE’S annual one day free festival People’s Day, (www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/peoplesday), is taking place on Saturday 15 June, from 11am to 5pm, in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter: across New Road, Jubilee Street and Jubilee Square, Church Street, Pelham Street, and within the Corn Exchange, City College and the Brighthelm Centre.

Organised by Brighton & Hove City Council to celebrate the diverse communities that inhabit the city and define its inclusive nature, the event will have activities and entertainment for all age groups. The programme of entertainment is spread across ten different themed zones and features live music and dance, health and wellbeing, sport, fashion, crafts, and an array of global food

stalls. Among the community groups and volunteers taking part this year are the Gay Elderly Men's Society (GEMS), local female acapella choir We-Bop, social enterprise company Able and Willing, Healthwatch Brighton & Hove, and the Silver Sounds Samba Band.

As well as uncovering some of the city’s amazing stories, art and culture, there will be opportunities to take part in a wealth of activities from African drumming to Chinese brush painting, street dance, hoola hooping and juggling. City College will bring a spot of nostalgia to the North Laine by hosting a country fayre complete with hay bales, Morris dancing and a mini farm while other highlights of the day include up and coming local band, High Tyde, talented Arabic-style belly dancer, Morgana and vocal performances from the ‘Actually Gay Men’s Chorus.

Last year, People’s Day attracted around 15,000 visitors and this year numbers are expected to be further boosted as the event is one of several taking place in the city, over the same weekend, which the council is supporting.

Council leader, Jason Kitcat, says: “Our city has a diverse mix of communities and our free-thinking attitude and spirit is something to celebrate.

“Last year’s People’s Day was a great success and we’re hoping to get even more people to join in and enjoy the great array of food and entertainment on offer. The fact that there are so many other events

taking place over the same weekend is not untypical for Brighton but gives even more of an incentive to get out and about and be reminded of why the city is such an interesting and inspiring place to be.”

Challenging Persistent Pain LIVING with constant pain is a struggle, both physically and emotionally. If you have pain that just refuses to go away, it may be time to see a pain specialist, says the Montefiore Hospital’s Dr Simon Thorp.

“Pain is something we all experience from time to time – we fall ill, hurt ourselves and sometimes have aches and pains for no apparent reason. It’s an indication that something is not quite right in our body and can protect us from doing further damage. In most cases, the painful symptoms either go away by themselves or can be resolved quickly and easily by your GP. But occasionally, the pain just won’t go away no matter what you do. This type of pain is often associated with back and joint conditions; neuralgia – a sharp shocking pain that follows the path of a nerve; and pain that persists after having surgery.

“A pain specialist will be able to recommend the best approach to managing your pain. They will review any drugs that you are currently taking and identify the most effective ones for your type of pain.

They may also tailor-make you a mixture of drugs which, when taken together, have a far greater effect than simply taking painkillers on their own.

“In recent years there have been many advances in drugs that provide pain relief.

One notable example is a substance called capsaicin, which is in fact the hot part of a chilli pepper, which is particularly effective for joint pain, neuralgias and pain caused by nerve damage.

“Living with persistent pain can take its toll emotionally as well as physically and it is quite common for patients to suffer from depression and feelings of isolation. In many cases the pain specialist will call upon a psychologist trained in pain to help treat the emotional component of the patient’s symptoms.”

What’s it all about?

Directed by Regis Roinsard, Populaire is set in 1959 and stars Deborah Francois as Rose Pamphyle, a smalltown shopgirl who dreams of bigger things and lands herself a trial period as secretary to cocky insurance agent Louis Echard (Romain Duris), largely due to her impressively speedy two-fingered typing skills. Though she’s something of a washout in the secretary department, Louis agrees to give Rose the job, providing she lets him enter her in the upcoming national speedtyping championship (something that was apparently all the rage in 1950s France).

The Great Roinsard’s direction is impeccable throughout, heightened by some achingly gorgeous production design work that expertly pastiches 1950s romcoms, coupled with a suitably fabulous soundtrack (the film has justifiably picked up several comments along the lines of ‘Mad Men meets The Artist’ and, oddly, Populaire steals an entire scene from Vertigo the same way The Artist stole some of Vertigo’s score.

In addition, Roinsard orchestrates several terrific scenes, such as a delightfully impromptu dance number, while all the competition sequences are thrillingly shot and edited, generating genuine, air-punching excitement in true sports movie fashion.

Plans are already underway for the Autumn Harvest food festival which runs 6 - 15 September 2013, and organisers are keen to talk to local businesses who wish to participate. More details are on the festival

Now entering its 11th year, the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival is a twice yearly celebration of great local produce. The festival promoted over 350 businesses and organisations in 2012, and attracted well in excess of 160,000 to the wide range of events and activities hosted in April and September.

In line with the festival’s social objectives, all of the anchor events are free entry to allow everyone to enjoy good, local food and drink.

FLAVOURS from the Middle East have been growing in popularity in recent years and now dishes and ingredients once seen as exotic are now becoming more commonplace.

Preserved lemons, used in many Middle Eastern dishes has seen a whopping rise in sales of 72% since this time last year and harissa, the spicy sauce, has also seen a rise in popularity by 62%.

Sumac, a less traditional ingredient, with a tart flavour, has been on Waitrose shelves for 11 years, but over the last year, sales have grown 23%.

As Yotam Ottolenghi a leading chef in Middle Eastern cooking comments, “I knew something was achieved when I recently spotted sumac in the spice section of my local Waitrose.”* Houmous is now so mainstream that it is part of the essential Waitrose range, viewed as a grocery staple. So popular is this tasty dip that there are more than 10 Waitrose own label variants and it is one of the best sellers in the delicatessen department. Even Tahini, a key ingredient for making your own houmous, has risen by nearly 40%.

WHITEHALL officials are to take a tighter grip of efforts to guarantee the “authenticity” of British food in a desperate attempt to rebuild confidence in the produce on supermarket shelves following the horsemeat crisis.

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is to take joint control of an official body designed to improve work to test products, spot risks and prevent dubious items entering the food chain.

Trading standards officers will also be forced to improve their monitoring of food on sale, under an "action plan" to be discussed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The report on "food authenticity" will lay out plans to protect the food chain by stepping up national co-ordination of testing and monitoring by local authorities, "setting priorities for sampling and analysis … targeting enforcement action, and opportunities for the FSA to play a stronger role in guiding activity".

The paper reveals that the number of food samples taken by councils has fallen in recent years, dipping by 14.6 per cent in the year to 2012 alone. And it warns the effectiveness of the testing programme could be threatened by government cuts.

acknowledgement of failures in the system set up to protect consumers from contamination of the sort that was exposed – through investigations in Ireland – in January. A government inquiry into the adulteration of processed beef products with horsemeat and pig meat, and an FSA review led by Professor Pat Troop, vice-chair of Cambridge University Hospitals, are expected to finish this year.

But the FSA proposal to "ensure effective consumer protection" reveals that the decision has already been made to have the Authenticity Steering Group, which spearheads efforts to prevent food fraud, run jointly by the FSA and Defra.

Andrew Rhodes, the FSA's director of operations, said part of the steering group's remit would be to "ensure that the authenticity programme is targeting the right priorities to make sure enforcers have the methods they need to address emerging food mislabelling and food fraud issues".

Mr Rhodes's report also concedes that the FSA needed to improve relations with the food industry, which had "sometimes been cautious in sharing intelligence on

risks with us in case specifics emerge... that compromise their commercial interests".

Anne McIntosh, a Tory MP and chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, which is investigating the crisis, said: "We were critical of the FSA when we reported on de-sinewed meat last year, and we couldn't have been clearer in our warnings that there was a potential for... contamination."

Michael Walker, science and food law consultant to the Laboratory of the Government Chemist, said the FSA plan was "a proportionate response". But he added that it is up to local authorities to "support the scientific infrastructure" for testing.

CHARITIES are set to benefit from a scheme that will result in surplus food stock at a leading UK supermarket being donated to vulnerable people.

Asda said a pioneering partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare will mean an extra 3.6 million meals will go to those in need every year.

When surplus stock is received by supermarkets, it is usually returned to the manufacturer and often goes to waste, according to an Asda spokesman. The new scheme will see it sent to Fareshare and then redistributed to local charities.

FareShare chief executive Lindsay Boswell said: "This partnership involves the redistribution of surplus food

at unprecedented levels never before undertaken by a retailer on this scale in the UK. We also know there are more people turning to charities for food than at any other time in our history."

Barry Williams, chief merchandising officer for food at Asda, said: "It's hard to believe that, in this day and age, nearly four million adults and children in the UK go to bed hungry each year.

"Food poverty is a very real problem and it's getting worse, not better.

"Through our new supply chain model and work with FareShare, I'm proud we're able to help feed millions of vulnerable people around the UK who would otherwise go hungry."

Fashion & Lifestyle Record number of Brits spring clean their wardrobe SPRING arrived in record fashion in Marks & Spencer stores this May, with staggering numbers of shwoppers descending on the retail giant to shwop their unwanted clothes. The bi-annual One Day Wardrobe Clear Out money-off event, in conjunction with Oxfam, saw 435,000 used and unwanted items shwopped over 12 hours – the equivalent of 604 items a minute.

The event, as part of M&S and Oxfam’s sustainable fashion initiative Shwopping, will see every item donated go on to be re-sold, re-used or recycled by the charity, cutting waste and raising much-needed funds in its fight against global poverty. The record 435,000 items shwopped will raise an estimated £504,600 for Oxfam.

One Day Wardrobe Clear Out on Thursday 9th May asked customers to help ease the landfill burden as part of a special ‘money off’ Shwopping event, with all those who shwopped receiving a £5 money-off voucher.

Marks & Spencer’s Castlepoint store was crowned ‘Top of the Shwops’ with 3,502 items donated in their 12 hours of

Shwopping hours.

Adam Elman, Head of Marks & Spencer’s Plan A Delivery, said: “It’s amazing to see so many people taking part and shwopping their clothes to support Oxfam. 435,000 clothes donated is a fantastic achievement; this is by far the most successful clothes-recycling event we have ever had! It doesn't stop here, with over 1 billion items sent to landfill each year in the UK, we hope that customers will continue to adopt a ‘buy one, give one back’ culture when they shop and help us to build a more sustainable future.”

Since its launch in April last year, Oxfam has received over 4.3 million items of clothing thanks to Shwopping, worth over £2.8 million for the charity.

All money raised by Shwopping is used to support Oxfam’s projects around the world working to alleviate poverty.

Till debt do us part OVER HALF of newlyweds (52 per cent) think wedding costs have spiralled out of control with one in ten (12 per cent) now in over £3,000 worth of debt due to the cost of their nuptials, according to new research.

The research, by Sheilas' Wheels home insurance found that the average wedding now comes in at £18,244 with 16 per cent of couples revealing they argued at least once a week during the planning process because of their finances while one in ten newlyweds (11 per cent) even came close to breaking up due to wedding related money woes.

According to the findings, one in five (21 per cent) had to take out credit cards and loans to pay for their big day with a further quarter (25 per cent) borrowing money from family and friends. Costs are hitting 25 to 34 year olds the hardest with a fifth (20 per cent) having to choose between a wedding or getting that first leg up on the property ladder. 19 per cent admit to almost breaking up in the run up to their wedding with a third (33 per cent) getting into debt to pay for it. A further one in five (23 per cent) have put off getting married due to their strained finances.

The research reveals that savvy brides and grooms are now going to increasing lengths to recoup costs from the big day with one in ten (12 per cent) admitting they ‘e-bayed' items bought from their gift list and 10 per cent admit to returning them to the shop to generate some cash. One in ten brides (11 per cent) sell their wedding dress online to get some cash and a further quarter (26 per cent) ask for money as a wedding gift to help their finances - 15 per cent even say it's specifically to pay off debts.

Caribbean an option for County Championship opening matches THE OPENING MATCHES of the County Championship could be played overseas as part of England and Wales Cricket Board plans to ease fixture congestion.

The proposal is in the early stages of being considered and is one of a number of ideas from the ECB. Abu Dhabi, where the season-opener between the MCC and the county champions has been held since 2010, is understood to be one potential venue.

The Caribbean, where some teams train, could be another.

It could mean the start of the season being brought forward to March.

The need for counties to fit in 16 Championship matches, along with at least 12 40-over and 10 Twenty20 fixtures, resulted in the 2013 season beginning on 10 April and the heavy concentration of first-class games at the beginning and end of each season is a consequence of lucrative limited-overs cricket being played in the mid-summer months.

From next season, an increased calendar of 14 Twenty20 games will spread throughout the whole season, with a competition of a minimum of eight 50-over games replacing the 40-over tournament.

However, the chance of any further changes

being made to incorporate overseas games to next year's calendar are thought to be remote.

When revising the calendar, the ECB faced the challenge of balancing the need for county cricket to act as a feeder to the England team while at the same time acknowledging that limited-overs cricket provides domestic sides with vital income from both spectators and television rights.

A proposal to cut the number of Championship matches to 14 was rejected, leaving the issue of fitting all 16 matches into a season that this year ends as late as 21 September.

Along with the county champions' now annual trip to Abu Dhabi, many counties travel abroad as part of their pre-season preparations.

This year, six teams - Derbyshire, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire - took part in a tournament in Barbados in March.

Former Essex cricketer and chief executive David East, now chief executive of the Emirates Cricket Board, based in Abu Dhabi, told the BBC that he had received no contact from the ECB about the possibility of staging County Championship matches.

A HOST OF CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS are chasing Gary Dicker, after he left Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 26-year-old was an integral part of Gus Poyet's side which won promotion to the Championship in 2012.

He remained an important member of the side, featuring in over 20 games last term - but the Irishman has now departed the AMEX Stadium after his contract expired.

The imposing midfielder is now set to open talks with a number of clubs, and Sky Sports understands up to half-a-dozen sides have already made contact.

The likes of Ipswich, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday are amongst the clubs showing an interest in the Irish player.

SEVERAL CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS are weighing up moves for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Adam El-Abd, Sky Sports understands.

El-Abd is out of contract at Brighton next month and as yet no new deal has been agreed with the long-serving defender.

The news has alerted a number of the Seagulls' Championship rivals with the

28-year-old possibly being available on a free transfer.

El-Abd has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Championship and has been instrumental in Brighton's success in the last couple of seasons.

The powerful central defender has made close to 300 appearances and the Egyptian international is a big fans' favourite at the Amex Stadium.

Albion not rushing to decide on Gus Poyet's future BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION say they will take "as long as necessary" to complete their inquiry into suspended manager Gus Poyet and his coaching staff.

Poyet, assistant boss Mauricio Taricco and first-team coach Charlie Oatway were told to stay away from the club in the aftermath of their play-off semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Brighton are still making no comment on the events surrounding the trio's suspension but, in a statement on the club's website, chief executive Paul Barber revealed the inquiry into the incident before their play-off tie with Crystal Palace last month is ongoing.

"We are conducting these matters reasonably, in light of all the circumstances," Barber said.

"These processes will take as long as is necessary."

Barber, in a statement on the club website, added: "The club will not be making any public comment on the matter until we are in a position to do so.

"We are aware of some ill-informed and unfounded speculation appearing in various

places. It is both unfair and unhelpful to everyone concerned.

“I appreciate that the issues we have had to face in recent weeks have created some uncertainty and concern for some of our supporters "Unfortunately, this is something we must all live with for the time being.

"Our priority will always be to ensure that we continue to manage the variety of situations that can develop within the club with as much confidentiality, professionalism, and dignity as possible for everyone concerned."

Meanwhile Barber says the Championship club are unlikely to identify who carried out an act of vandalism in the Crystal Palace dressing room ahead of the second leg of their play-off semi-final.

Brighton apologised to Palace for the incident, in which excrement was found in the visitors' dressing room. Eagles manager Ian Holloway later said it had helped motivate his side to win at the Amex.

well as speculation and rumour, much of it exaggerated or untrue," Barber said.

"To be clear, the incident was confined to the floor and to the paper dispenser area of one cubicle in the visitors' dressing room toilets.

"No 'messages' were scrawled on the floor or anywhere else. And it remains a slight possibility that this was not a deliberate act of vandalism as attempts had been made to clean up the area before the issue was brought to our attention.

"Numerous club employees and contractors need access to the tunnel area of our stadium to do their jobs.

"There is no evidence that a member of the club's staff was responsible. Equally, we cannot be sure who was.

"Unfortunately, we are very unlikely to know exactly what happened, but access and security to the tunnel area have been reviewed and some changes will be implemented next season.

"It is now time to move on."
