KEEP HANDS OFF HOVE PARK SCHOOL Richard Morris @BrightonIndy An anti-academy group is hoping its last-ditch effort to lobby school governors into rejecting plans to convert a popular school into an academy will end in victory.

Members of Hands Off Hove Park will be outside the school’s Nevill Road base in Hove on Monday evening, when governors are due to meet to vote on the controversial plans.

The school’s leadership appears determined to push ahead with the academy conversion, arguing a change in status would bring with it a raft of benefits.

This is despite a poll of parents, funded by Brighton and Hove City Council, that showed 71% were opposed to the change.

Those in favour of becoming an

academy were quick to point out that only about 40% of parents responded to the non-binding poll.

She hopes as many people as possible will now turn out on Monday at 5.45pm to hammer that message home.

Ms Steel said: “Ever since the school leadership team announced its intention to seek academy conversion, there has been disruption and uncertainty for pupils, parents, teachers and the local authority.

“We urge the governors to heed the views of parents, teachers, students and the wider community as they make this important decision.

“The case for an academy has not been made in terms of benefits to pupils and a decision to convert would fly in the face of local public feeling.”

Brighton and Hove City Council’s suspended head of housing, Jugal Sharma, has been questioned by police investigating alleged contracts fraud worth £18 million.

The 53-year-old was interviewed under caution by appointment at the local custody centre earlier this week. The investigation was launched by the police’s economic crime unit in November last year following an initial investigation by the council’s own internal audit team. Police are looking into allegations of the improper awarding of council contracts over the past ten years.

The controversial March for England will not be held in Brighton and Hove next year, according to organisers.

The annual march, which takes place on the weekend closest to St George’s Day, has regularly attracted counter protests from anti-fascists and is estimated to have cost local businesses millions of pounds on top of a hefty police bill for the city.

Organisers, however, have told supporters next year’s march will take place in the north of England, although it could return in 2016.

An ambitious £100 million plan to transform the site of an old fruit and veg market has been approved.

Brighton and Hove City Council gave the Circus Street development the go-ahead at a meeting despite concern over the impact of the scheme. Councillors decided the benefits of the scheme, which includes a seven-story office building, dance studio and accommodation for hundreds of students, outweighed the negatives.

Those benefits include 232 fulltime jobs and the development could generate £200 million for the local economy over ten years.

A stash of 160 weapons including swords, axes and crossbows was uncovered when police raided a flat this week.

Officers targeted the one-bedroom flat in Viaduct Road, Brighton, earlier this week, executing a warrant to search the property for drugs. But they got more than they bargained for when they stumbled across the weapons, which included an imitation firearm.

A 44-year-old man was arrested and drugs seized.

Sussex Police later tweeted pictures of some of the weapons.

A quartet of Brighton and Hove’s best live bands are performing at the Old Market in Hove on Saturday, October 4 to raise money for a local children’s charity.

Long-suffering Brighton and Hove-based commuters could have to stump up another £664 a year for their season ticket after the transfer of the Thameslink franchise.

The new Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern (TSGN) franchise, which is owned by Govia, is also set to take over Southern and Gatwick Express services from July next year.

And the local Labour Party believes the upshot will be increased prices for commuters

having unearthed confirmation that where two existing franchises exist - like First Capital Connect and Southern on the Brighton to London line – the cheaper fare will be phased out.

As a result, the Labour Party estimates some commuters from Brighton to London will pay £4,304 a year - a rise of 18%.

An off-peak Brighton to London return could cost £28.50, rather than the current cheapest option of £16.50.

Nancy Platts, Labour’s

parliamentary candidate in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, said: “At the moment people have a choice and can save money by using the cheaper fares, the decision to phase out those fares will come as a nasty shock to many who can’t afford the more expensive tickets.”

A spokesman for the rail company said prices had not yet been finalised and any decision on increases would be made by the government.

One of the great things about Brighton Digital Festival is that it brings into view what for most of the time is invisible. Most people in the city are now pretty aware that Brighton hosts one of the most impressive clusters of digital media companies in the country and that it is snapping at the heels of tourism in terms of the amount of value it contributes to the city economy.

However, unlike the tourism sector, you can’t actually see it most of the time.

The hundreds of companies and freelancers that comprise our digital success story are scattered all over the city hiding in workspaces big and small. Not only can’t you see them, but also it’s also hard to find out what they actually do.

However, chances are that one of the websites you’ve visited recently, or mobile games you’ve played, or apps you’ve used, has - in whole or in part - originated here. Brands from Toyota to the British Museum, the BBC

to British Airways owe key elements of their online presence to Brighton businesses.

For one month, Brighton Digital Festival brings much of that activity and creative expertise out into open. Firstly it brings it onto the streets. There is a whole host of stuff in the festival that uses the city itself as part of the digital action.

There was last week’s fabulous festival opener in New Road, Seb Lee-Delisle’s interactive musical extravaganza Laser Light Synths.

Then there is RamJam’s Little Bo Beep game, where spotting QR codes around the city can help the aforementioned shepherd find her digital sheep.

Also well worth mentioning is Joseph Young’s digitally sampled manifesto Revolution #10 which, like any decent revolution, takes it to the streets. There are many, many more too numerous to mention and you can find details of all the outdoor festival events on the Brighton Digital Festival website.

The other way that the festival makes the business of digital visible and discoverable is that it also gives you a chance to visit digital companies in their own

workplaces. The Open Studios Week, which runs September 22 to 26, has 26 separate companies opening their doors and demonstrating to people what they do and how they do it.

Those participating include digital marketing wunderkinds Propellernet, museum interactivity experts Cogapp, eyetracking specialists No Pork Pies, top e-learning business Kineo and TV producers Lambent. It’s a great one-off chance to chat to these companies and get to know a bit more about what makes digital in Brighton so great. Behind the bits and bytes, it is people who make our digital cluster, and our city, what it is. Hopefully this year’s digital festival gives you a chance to have fun checking some of them out whilst learning a bit about what they do.

Tour of Britain ‘massive success’ An estimated 100,000 people took to the streets of Brighton and Hove to cheer on the riders during the penultimate stage of this year’s Tour of Britain.

The race, which was eventually won overall by Dylan van Baarle, attracted around 50,000 people to the city’s seafront, where they witnessed an exciting sprint finish.

Tens of thousands of others watched from vantage points along the route.

Leisure card success: 34,000 centre visits Richard Morris @BrightonIndy A scheme offering cheaper access to local leisure facilities has proved an overwhelming success, with more than double the expected number of locals signing up.

Brighton and Hove City Council and Freedom Leisure joined forces to launch the Leisure Card in April last year in a bid to help people on low incomes get more use of the city’s various leisure centres and swimming pools.

Traditionally, low-income families tend to have low participation rates and are more prone to obesity and poor health.

But since that launch, almost 1,300 people have signed up to the scheme - more than twice the first-year target of 500.

Those 1,284 people have clocked up over 34,000 visits to local facilities, with leisure centres, pools and gyms the most popular.

The Leisure Card offers a 40 per cent discount on a range of activities at six council-owned leisure facilities managed for the authority by Freedom Leisure - the King Alfred Leisure Centre, Prince Regent Sports Complex, Withdean Sports Complex, Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre, Stanley Deason Leisure Centre and St Luke’s swimming pool, which is due to re-open in mid-October following repairs to storm damage.

Discounts cover swimming, squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, fitness suites and membership. The meanstested cards are available at

each of the above centres for those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Income Support, Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance or Child Tax Credit.

And research has shown that about a third of card-holders had not previously used leisure centres. Ninety per cent of respondents now visit at least once a week. Before the card scheme, only 37 per cent of them visited once a week.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, the council’s chair of the economic development and culture committee which was told of the successful first year at a meeting yesterday (Thursday) was delighted.

He said: “The Leisure Card is proving a huge success. Not only could it improve the health of the city’s poorest residents, it could also save the city money in the longer term by reducing the cost of healthcare.

“Our public health colleagues are clear that sport and physical activity are beneficial in preventing many common diseases. Local leisure centres have a role in promoting health alongside local doctors’ surgeries and the NHS. “Freedom Leisure has established itself as a proactive and receptive partner in this.

“We’re also continuing to offer free swimming for under-16s and have undertaken a multimillion-pound refurbishment of Withdean Sports Complex to create even better, affordable facilities.”

Homelessness debate

School run mums and dads who persist in parking on pavements and verges around schools could receive on the spot fines of £70.

Brighton and Hove City Council is targeting motorists in areas around a selection of city schools - a group which is sure to include plenty of parents.

The schools being focused on in October are Rudyard Kipling Primary, Westdene Primary, Aldrington CE Primary and Hangleton Infants and Juniors.

The aim is to improve safety for children.

Representatives from a range of charities and organisations that work with homeless people in Brighton and Hove are meeting on Friday, September 26.

The Brighton and Hove Fabian Society is hosting a debate on whether or not the city has too many homeless charities.

It is scheduled to begin at 8pm at Brighton Friends’ Meeting House in Ship Street.

A number of guest speakers have been lined up, including Andy Winter from the Brighton Housing Trust.

Search to find mum a stem cell match Richard Morris @BrightonIndy A mother of two is desperately searching for a suitable stem cell donor after being told it is her best chance of surviving long enough to see her children grow up.

Nikki Braterman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December last year and after undergoing months of treatment looked to be on the road to recovery.

Tragically, however, she recently suffered a relapse and the 45-yearold knows her most-realistic chance of recovery is finding a perfect match stem cell donor to enable her to have a vital bone marrow transplant.

She has now embarked on a global mission to track down people who share her ethnic background (AngloBurmese and Irish) or people with south Asian heritage to volunteer as potential stem cell donors through their national registry.

Mrs Braterman made a passionate plea to anyone reading her story.

She said: “I’m a mum to two small children, aged seven and four, and I want to see them grow up.

“My wonderful parents are quite

an exotic mix: my mother is AngloBurmese and my father is Irish. In bone marrow transplants, ethnicity really matters and when you belong to a relatively rare grouping like this, your chances of finding a donor can be quite low.

“Sadly, although both my brothers leapt into the breach to offer themselves as donors, they don’t match me. A donor was found in France who was a 9/10 match and we thought all was well.

“But I have a lot of extremely aggressive antibodies. This was discovered during the final matching test of my blood with the donor’s.

“The wonderful transplant team at King’s College Hospital in London have tried to find donated umbilical cords which will match with me, but there aren’t any that match that would also get past the antibodies.

So I’m stuck.

“If you are reading this story and think that you may be able to help then please, please get in touch, you might just be able to save my life.”

Her husband, Geoff Braterman, added: “I don’t want to lose her and I don’t want my kids to grow up without their mum. ”

Why did he never file them? The oldest photograph dates back to 1966, to a day when Mary Thornton, then aged ten, was out with her baby brother. That afternoon as the Moors Murderers were sent to prison for life, Mary sees something that will haunt her forever. As Stella inches closer to the truth, the events

of the day begin to haunt her, too.

The Moors Murders lingers on in all of our subconscious, I think, even if we were too young to have clear memories of that horrific case.

This is a really intelligent book with a multi-layered plot and brilliant, keeping it real characters. The story takes us into the world of loss and forgiveness with satisfying twists and turns throughout.

Stella Darnell is one of those characters that stay with you long after the book is finished.

She also gives some extremely handy hints on cleaning, you know, nasty blood stains out of carpets, or fingerprints from walls and windows. Should you ever need them!

Well, you didn't have to be Einstein to forecast that we would soon be in for another round of public service worker strikes. The only surprise for me was that they waited until after the summer tourist season. Perhaps they did not want to spoil their holidays.

However, whatever the rights and wrongs of the matter, it certainly looks like the public service we receive in this fair city is about to get even worse than it already is. There is precious little we can do about all this until the polls, unfortunately.

The unions are hell-bent on confronting the current useless bunch of town hall incumbents and all we can do is sit and watch - while this tasteless comedy act is played out.

There is no doubt about it; our city is in a disgusting state and getting worse by the day. While I have no respect for this useless council, the blame cannot be entirely laid at their door. Businesses and individuals can make a difference and I am pleased to see that a group calling themselves Zero Waste Brighton has been formed. Their aims are to achieve just that and they are actively encouraging people to sign up to creating a cleaner, more

appealing city.

Whilst the Zero Waste group say they are not into council bashing, the main problems they are trying to address are. Mainly, that there seems to be litter all over the place these days and the whole system appears to have broken down. This is not good for business, it’s not good for residents and it’s certainly not good for tourists who visit here.

The group say they want to address consumer and business behaviour (personal responsibility), with regard to what's purchased and being thrown away. In particular what's being thrown away on our streets.

They say that change will only come from the bottom up. That if we can build a big enough voice then perhaps we can influence some of the larger retailers over irresponsible packaging and waste

practices. Currently, it seems that much of the waste blowing about on our seafront is from the same few large retailers who no doubt profess to be examples of model recycling policies, but in reality could do better.

The mission for Zero Waste Brighton is to encourage businesses and individuals to sign up to the principles of this very worthwhile cause. To take personal responsibility (i.e. don't leave bin bags to the mercy of seagulls) and and reduce their waste footfall.

The group say they want to encourage people to help the council identify litter problems and build up the picture of how awful matters have got (good luck with that). This can be done by tweeting pictures of the offending litter to #ZeroWasteBrighton and @RecyclingRefuse (the council’s waste management twitter account).

Whatever the result, groups such as Zero Waste Brighton are to be applauded for their efforts and given as much support as we can possibly muster.

Restaurant’s pest fine

James Fox, the head of Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA), has taken a leave of absence pending the outcome of an investigation into the registration status of a small number of pupils.

The school’s governing body wrote to parents to inform them of the investigation. During Mr Fox’s absence the school’s senior leadership team will be supported

by Brendan Loughran.

A spokesman said: “All steps are being put in place to ensure that students’ learning is unaffected by this.”

A restaurant has been fined £3,515 after mouse droppings were found throughout the premises including under the fryer floating in a pool of grease.

Cloudless Limited, which runs the Seagull Restaurant in Madeira Drive, pleaded guilty to seven charges, including failing to ensure adequate procedures are in place to control pests.

Following a health inspector’s visit on March 13 the owner closed the premises to clean up and carry out treatment and proofing works.

Support Space for Cycling I’m a huge advocate of consideration by all road users. This often means slowing down and being more aware of others, particularly where space is tight. In addition, Bricycles strongly supports the Space for Cycling campaign. Most of the measures put forward in Space for Cycling are beneficial whether you’re on a bike or not.

If Space for Cycling proposals gain cross-party support and funding and are put into practice, many of the 61% of people who now think it’s too dangerous to cycle on the roads would be encouraged to ride. There would be enormous payoffs in terms of better air quality for all, improved public health, less rush-hour stress and fewer road traffic collisions.

So we’re calling on all Brighton and Hove councillors and prospective councillors to commit to making continuing transport improvements so that the city becomes safer and more encouraging for cycling and walking as an alternative to individual motor vehicle use.

Binmen to strike

Brighton and Hove binmen are striking on Monday in what could be the first in a host of industrial actions.

Union members voted for a full day of strike action on Monday amid a long-running dispute over pay and allowances.

The row has been raging for more than a year and the GMB union warned the city could face months of potential disruptions.

GMB Members voted 89.7% in favour of strike action.

An Independent View The likelihood is that the governors of Hove Park School will decide to convert the school into an academy.

If so, the decision will be wrong.

Not because - or not just because academies are a fundamental antidemocratic perversion of schools with a track record of serving local communities.

It will be the wrong decision because of way it has been reached: a one-way conversation, frequently conducted behind closed doors by people who appear - if only by their muteness - to be deaf and blind to the concerns of a significant proportion of parents, staff, and

the wider citizenry.

There may be arguments for poorly-performing schools to be turned into academies. That is not the case here. Hove Park School is on the way up. Radical action was required some years ago, when still-silent Conservative and Labour councillors said and did nothing.

Every institution is improved by being more open and more democratic. It seems to be the only lesson unlearned at Hove Park School.

Brighton and Hove bands are being encouraged to enter parliament’s annual Rock the House competition.

Mike Weatherley, the MP for Hove, is also hoping talented locals enter the Film the House competition.

The MP was instrumental in setting up the contests, which look to promote creative talent and raise awareness of intellectual property rights among both the public and law-makers.

Sussex Police has a new deputy chief constable after Olivia Pinkney was promoted to the role.

DCC Pinkney, who joined the force straight after studying at Cambridge University, has worked in Sussex since 2009 when she joined as assistant chief constable.

Previous roles include police commander for Bath and head of Special Branch. DCC Pinkney said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the post and be part of the team delivering excellent policing for the people of Sussex.”

Nancy Platts, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, has criticised East Sussex Fire Authority for agreeing to spend £200,000 on an office team soon after voting to cut frontline jobs. The money will establish a “service transformation team” which will be responsible for implementing savings plans, which include cutting one of only five fire engines in Brighton and Hove.

Ms Platts said: “This raises serious questions about why these funds were not made available to maintain frontline services.”

Rehab decision slammed

A fleet of 30 Brighton and Hove taxis will soon benefit from cleaner and greener engines as a result of a £195,000 government grant. The cash, awarded to Brighton and Hove City Council by the Department for Transport, follows £750,000 given to the city last year to help reduce emissions from local buses.

This latest money will pay for 30 taxi minibuses to be modified to make their exhaust gases less harmful to the environment.

Alfresco, a restaurant in Kings Road Arches, has raised almost £7,000 for the Angus Rowland Appeal - a local charity set up following the death of 14-year-old Angus from Leukaemia.

The charity support Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Generous customers agreed to pay an extra £1 on their bill at Alfresco, making £6,377.50, while Angus’ brother and his band played a concert at the venue, raising another £600 for the appeal.

Unions have criticised the decision to contract out the service that provides rehabilitation equipment to patients coming out of hospitals in Brighton and Hove.

Members of Unison and the GMB protested outside Hove Town Hall while the Brighton and Hove Health and Wellbeing Board approved the plans to privatise the Integrated Community Equipment Service. World Cup

One year to go until world cup It is exactly one year until Brighton and Hove welcomes the Rugby World Cup and excitement is already building across the city – with the trophy itself due in the city today.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex stadium plays host to a pair of matches in the opening stage of the competition, with South Africa v Japan kicking things off on September 19 at 4.45pm.

The following day Samoa take on USA with a 12noon start and fans have already started applying for tickets with applications open until September 29. Where demand exceeds capacity, fans will be entered into a ballot.

Brighton and Hove City Council is determined to ramp up the anticipation over the coming months and will today (Friday) launch a project involving a host of local rugby fans.

A group of rugby enthusiasts, old and new, young and old, will contribute to a blog chronicling their experiences of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2015’s arrival in the city.

Paddle Round The Pier The award-winning Paddle Round The Pier beach festival is looking for nominations from charities who are interested in being beneficiaries of next year’s event.

The popular event will return on July 4 and 5 after a hugelysuccessful weekend this year.

Plans are already well underway and part of that is deciding which good causes to support.

Nominations are being invited throughout September, with organisers voting on the chosen charities next month.

Those colourful eccentrics who used to enrich the city Graham Chainey

Brighton has always been a refuge for eccentrics, oddballs, misfits and mavericks. But are they still with us in such glorious abundance as before? As one surveys our modern streets, jostling with lookalike students, cloned digital-media trendies, and identikit hen gangs, it is hard to discern many of those uncompromisingly colourful individualists who once enlivened them.

It is years, for example, since I last sighted Drako Oho Zarhazar (real name Antony Banwell), he of the shaven head, waxed moustache, earrings, piercings and tattoos, whose caped figure used to be seen pedalling up St James’s Street. Drako in his youth knew Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol, and he once posed naked all-night on a plinth at the old Gloucester nightclub. He is the subject of a recent film and radio programme, recounting his two nervous breakdowns, two attempted suicides, two car

accidents and two comas, which have left him, now in his late 70s, with a rare kind of functional amnesia.

Years, too, since I last saw monocled, jodhpurred, bowlerhatted Chris Eubank driving his giant American Peterbilt 379 truck through the streets. Nor have I seen self-styled Baron Richard von Hymir de Dufton for a while, who used to waylay me with his recondite conspiracy theories and druidic fantasies.

Gone certainly is the Great Omani (Ron Cunningham), who ate fire, rode from Hastings to Brighton in a coffin, entombed himself in concrete, had swords thrust through him, and aged 90 set himself alight in the Bedford Tavern, while crushing broken bottles barefoot.

Gone too is Brian Behan. An indefatigable year-round nude bather, Behan was more than once unnecessarily saved from the waves by busybody rescuers.

He responded to the closure of most of the city’s public toilets – and to the council’s “place to be” campaign for city status – by launching a “place to wee” campaign, and standing in the

2001 mayoral elections as the loo candidate. He also formed a Grey Power Party on behalf of pensioners’ rights, and an AntiMarriage Society, whose members were encouraged to attend weddings dressed as undertakers and hand death certificates to the newlyweds.

A favourite Brighton eccentric of mine, Henry Cope, known as the Green Man, was also one of the earliest. Cope’s eccentricity was single and pathological.

I quote from the Annual Register for 1806: “He dressed in green pantaloons, green waistcoat, green frock, green cravat; and his countenance was also green.

He ate nothing but greens, fruits and vegetables, had his rooms painted green, and furnished with green sofa, green chairs, green tables, green bed and green curtains. His gig, his livery, his portmanteau, his gloves and his wigs were all green. With a green silk handkerchief in his hand, and a large watch-chain with green seals, fastened to the green buttons of his green waistcoat, he paraded every day on the Steine.”

and from good family. “He is always alone, walks slow, and stops and looks at every lady as he passes.” Sometimes he wore a huge cocked hat with tassels, sometimes “a round hat fixed on the side of his head”.

Maybe the Green Man was some strange premonitory precursor or prognostic of the Green men and women who currently, two centuries later, run our city. One can but speculate. Impossible at this distance in time to know whether it was madness that made him green, or the green that made him mad. Whatever the truth, one morning in October 1806 he climbed out of the window of his house and, running to the edge of the cliff, leapt over.

A ghost-seeker is launching an adults only guided tour through Brighton and Hove’s mysterious, unusual and supernatural history.

Edward White will lead the walks each Friday - starting tonight - and promises to take in a host of supposedly haunted sites while retelling ghostly stories and lifting the lid on mysteries from the 10th century to the modern day. He said: “There are hundreds of spirits who haunt the many parks, buildings and streets of Brighton.

"There will also be stories of tragedy, disappearances and much more.

"Every tour will be a unique experience. Who knows? Maybe some of the very ghosts we talk about on the tour will join us."

Scheduled stops included on the tour include the building where a hide and seek game went gruesomely wrong, the cellar where unspeakable acts happened and The Old Steine, which legend has it is still haunted.

Due to the graphic nature of some of the stories, the tour is not suitable for children or those of a nervous disposition.

The first walk takes place tonight at 7.30pm, starting next to Brighton Town Hall opposite Moshimo.

Each walk lasts 45 minutes and costs £5. They will run weekly until November 28.

Pensions - you’re never too young to take control Ian Poysden @iepfinancial

The word “pension” is too closely linked to “pensioner”, and those of us in our 20s and 30s still believe this is too far in the distance to be of any concern at present.

However, this simply isn’t the case. It is imperative that people in their 20s and 30s start laying the foundations of a good savings scheme and pension pot in order to be ready for the day we choose to retire.

If you’re fresh out of education and have secured yourself your dream job, or indeed any paid employment, start making plans now. Your retirement age is probably a long way off, but with increased life-expectancy meaning you could be enjoying 30 years or more of retirement, suddenly the £144 per week single tier basic state pension may appear a bit measly.

But where to start?

If you’re in your 20s, start planning. Clearing any debts is important during your 20s, and starting to save through a scheme such as a NISA is a brilliant start.

Credit cards and bank debts should take priority to clear, and then any student debt. If there’s

anything left over, saving in a New Individual Savings Account (NISA) for now and take advantage of the £15,000 tax-free annual allowance.

Also, if your employer offers a company pension scheme, take it!

Under the new Workplace Pension legislation your employer will need to have a company pension in place by 2018 at the latest. This is an easy, cost-effective way of starting to save for your future.

Employers will pay on your behalf and this is essentially free money – If you don’t take it you will be sure to regret it.

If you’re in your 30s, financial pressures will probably take over from savings.You may be planning a wedding, buying your first home or starting a family. This is the time when a cash “buffer” may come in useful to help cover the tide for mothers or fathers taking leave after a new baby, or even the threat of redundancy.

Mortgage repayments will take a chunk of your salary, and with the ever increasing likelihood of an interest rate rise, you will need to make sure that this can be covered.

It is a good idea to continue re-assessing your debts and outgoings throughout your 30’s and if you haven’t already, join your company pension scheme

now. If you’re self-employed, you may find it effective to use an independent financial adviser to source a suitable pension scheme.

As you get older it will also become harder to get into the habit of saving properly for your retirement and will take much more of an effort to get a pensions pot together of any significant value. It is obviously easier to put £100 per month to one side from your 20s onwards than finding £400 per month from your 40s when you are likely to still have outgoings for your mortgage and children.

If you haven’t already thought about using an independent financial adviser, perhaps now is the time. The world of pensions is a complicated one, and using an expert could save you time and more importantly, money.

Midnight's castle campaign shortlisted for award Award-winning Brighton-based Midnight Communications has been shortlisted for a national PR award for its work with Arundel Castle in West Sussex.

The firm is in with a chance of winning the Freshest Media Relations Campaign, with the winner announced in Manchester on October 30.

14 Brighton Comedy Festival Shows not to miss Simon Amstell

Brighton Comedy Festival is fast-approaching and tickets for the various shows are already on sale and selling well.

The festival runs from October 10 until 25 and includes performances from big name comedians like Jack Dee, Dave Gorman and Richard Herring.

Brighton & Hove Independent has handily compiled a list of the 14 must-see acts coming to a comedy venue near you next month.

Cardinal Burns

With intense vulnerability and troubling honesty, Amstell explores freedom, joy, love, death, adventure, art, peace, sex, regret, success, eating, suffering, dreaming, healing, forgiving and other areas.

The winner of two British Comedy Awards, an RTS Award, a Broadcast Award and a Chortle Award, Amstell has also been nominated for a BAFTA. The New York Times recently said: “Simon Amstell has a gift for taking a social norm and gently mocking it until it seems utterly ridiculous.”

Corn Exchange October 24, 7.30pm British Comedy Award winning and BAFTA nominated duo Cardinal Burns are hitting the road and heading for Brighton. Sara Pascoe Brighton Dome Studio October 24, 9.15pm With a comedy brain that leaps from stimulating arguments onto abstract confabulation with lumpy doses of openness, honesty and earnestness, Sara shares her romantic history, existential theory and cultural insights in her latest show, aptly titled Sara Pascoe Vs History.

During the show she discusses how the past contains wars, witches, Kim Yong-Il and your ex while, dissecting how your brain can recall being a child while your body remembers being a monkey.

It might sound strange, but it is entertaining.

Milton Jones Brighton Dome Studio October 15 7.15pm Milton Jones is coming to Brighton Comedy Festival with his latest tour show but unfortunately it isn’t quite ready yet. Don’t panic though he’s a professional, it’s the guy with the loud shirts and messed up hair from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow and multiple series on Radio 4.

From playing comedy clubs all over the country Ranganathan’s profile has grown as has the respect from his peers which resulted in him writing for numerous shows and supporting the likes of Seann Walsh, Bill Burr, Paul Chowdhry and one of his comedy heroes Ricky Gervais.

This is his eagerly anticipated new show, Rom Wasn’t Built In A Day, and sees the punchline packing Ranganathan step out from the shadow of his better known peers. One not to miss.

Glenn Wool has a comedy career that spans 20 years with television and live engagements over five continents. Fresh from his highly acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe run, Glenn has also performed a myriad of solo shows at international festivals around the world. Alex Edelman has made a show. He’s been working on it for a long time, so it’ll be good. Even figuring out the simple, one-word title for the show (Millenial) was an agonizing amount of stress. He’d like you to come see it. It covers a lot of ground, or at least a little bit of ground, intensely. It also won the 2014 Foster's Edinburgh Best Newcomer Award.

One of the top emerging comedians, Edelman is a New York-based funnyman who has lived in Boston, LA and Jerusalem. He’s a recent college graduate, and according to the Boston Globe, has “natural comic timing” and contains qualities “wonderful to see in a young comedian.”

It is hard to describe Marcel Lucont and his latest show, Is. The Brighton Comedy Festival’s website describes his show as: “A modern man’s majestic musings morality, morality masculinity and moreover Marcel Lucont, multi award-deserving maverick. A multi-media melange of magnificence.” While it isn’t immediately clear exactly what that means, you can rest-assured his show will be funny. Lucont won World Fringe Award for best comedy show 2013 and the Amused Moose Award 2012.

Preparing to sell When you call your estate agent around, how much information do you have to hand about your property?

From the many conversations I have with prospective sellers, I have come to realise that few are really aware of all the substantive issues or properly prepared to market their property after we have called by.

With that in mind, I thought it would be useful to provide some pre-valuation appointment tips so the agent can be relatively sure of what he or she is going to discuss.

Who and what is the valuation for? Sale, Probate valuation, tax purposes, thinking of a remortgage ? Are you the owner even? Now and then, I turn up to carry out a valuation to discover that the person I meet is a tenant who is therefore not strictly able to request a valuation on the property as it is not theirs. They may be thinking of buying it and want to negotiate from a position of strength with the owner. But, who is going to pay our fee when it is sold? Probably not the seller and the tenant will most likely want to do a private deal so why should we give our expertise for free? Are you sole or joint owner;

should the valuation report go to all parties? So, be upfront with the agent so they can advise properly.

Important physical points about the property are critical.

Are there any unusual restrictive covenants; is it listed; what grade listing; is there a flying freehold; any garage or parking? Is that garden or patio yours or do you have sole use or not? Agents may assume you own all of what they are viewing for you when in fact you don't, so let them know what is yours and what is not.

We have so many leasehold properties locally, where there are shared pathways to front doors, especially front patio areas at basement level. Often, the owner of the front flat will claim ownership of the front patio only for the buyer to discover when they see the lease plan, that its a shared area...oops!

This applies to fixtures too: wood-burners, fitted mirrors and shelves, blinds, floor coverings, plants; the list goes on.

Critical is the leasehold freehold situation with flats and maisonettes, and some houses, particularly mews houses.

Many sellers of flats say they have the freehold, therefore they do not have a lease. They almost

always do and if they don't, it's quite unlikely they will be able to sell, except to a cash buyer.

Lenders want a lease as that is the binding agreement, looking after the whole building, not just your bit.

The freehold is effectively the land that the building is on. If you own a share, that is not your flat, it's the freehold share. You still have a lease. The lease binds the owners in a shared building, whether shared freehold or just leasehold with an external freeholder, to manage their relationship over the flats, the common parts, inside and out, and to basically play ball over living in a shared building, paying the share of all bills, insurance and any other outgoings.

So, when we come along, we need to know the length of lease, whether or not you have a shared freehold of the building or mews land. We need to know if you pay ground rent and how much. We need to know how much you pay in service charge every year and does it include buildings insurance.

Sometimes the maintenance/ service charge includes for instance, redecorating of external walls but not window frames, or it may include a monthly clean.

These are critical factors in giving a seller a realistic valuation as all these factors affect the value and saleability of the property.

Currently, we are in a period

where many flats, converted in the 1970s to 1990s have leases considered short or too short for lending by financial institutions.

With the tightening up of lending criteria by many of these, if a property goes to the market with an eighty-five year or less lease, the buyer is likely to ask for a fresh lease or lease extension to 125 or even 999 years to be included in the sale price. This requires the seller to negotiate with the freeholder, usually via a managing agent, to pay to extend the lease. This can lead to protracted negotiations as the freeholder can see the seller is in a cleft stick and then bumps up the price to maximise their profit on the deal.

There are several local professional values, members of RICS or SAVA, who can act for the seller and negotiate to settle a realistic price. BUT, you don't really want to be starting this process when you are in the middle of a sale process with a buyer. So, check your lease and discuss it with the estate agent you invite in, to ensure you are clear on your rights and your responsibilities.

Of course, if you are a shared freeholder, you need to negotiate with the ore freeholders and you may well agree to have all your leases extended together. This is certainly the best option as you just have to engage a solicitor

to extend the lease or create a new one. This is the time to look carefully at the lease and ensure it is 'fit for purpose'.

Some leases from 20-50 years ago have completely irrelevant and unnecessarily restrictive clauses whilst possibly missing some which modern living in the 21st century require!

Even if you are a leaseholder with no share of freehold, it may be better for you and the other leaseholders to approach your freeholder as one, as you may get a better deal working together on the lease extension or even negotiating to buy a share of freehold.

We all hope if we stick our heads in the sand, some of these problems will go away.

Unfortunately, they do not; they get worse! So, before you get your agent around, do some preparatory digging through your paperwork, perhaps get in touch with the solicitor you used when you bought the place you are going to sell, and get as many facts as you can. Then, when we turn up to discuss your plans, we are able to give you good, clear, unambiguous advice so you can make good decisions. You know it makes sense!

Sugardough: out of the oven, put on the shelf and sold while it is still hot Sugardough in Hove may not be on your radar, not yet anyway. Quietly running for four years, this fantastic bakery is starting to get some serious recognition for its wonderful array of pastries, cakes, bread and bakes.

I caught up with head honcho and baker extraordinaire, Kane, to find out more.

Tell us about the background to Sugardough?

We started four years ago, just up the street and originally had a shop that was about half the size. It was just myself in there, pretty much a one man band: do the dishes, sweep the floor, cook the food, serve the customers - that was quite nice but it’s just sort of grown over the past four years.

I try not to emphasise, I try not to push things or create a hype. I’d much prefer for it to be an organic process whereby basically, people find out about us through word of mouth. If people are enjoying the stuff, then

Where did you learn your craft?

I ran away from home at 15 and I’ve pretty much been cooking ever since.

I started in a bakery in Melbourne, and I spent 25 years there cooking in various forms, from bakeries to highend restaurants.

For me, it’s you know, you start at the start. Bread is flour, water and salt and some sort of rising agent.

That simplicity is a challenge in itself. It’s either a nice loaf or it’s a rubbish loaf. Personally, baking is about going back to basics. It’s a real pleasurable experience, you take something, you make the mix, it’s a big pile of gloop, and the whole thing of putting it in the oven and the way it comes out like ‘ta da’.

Is everything handcrafted by yourself?

Everything is made here: from the puff pastry to the croissant, to the breads. Everything is baked daily and it’s all made completely from scratch. We’re not organic but we do

Syrups are made from sugar and spice and all things nice, albeit they’re predominantly made of sugar, and not all of them are particularly nice.

We only stock the flavours which are actually palatable and they are all, without exception, vegan friendly.

try and use a lot of local products, and if we can’t use local products we do try and use local suppliers.

I make a monthly trip down to Chichester to get some stoneground wholemeal from a watermill down there. Having it ground right in front of you is as fresh as you can get it and makes it unique as well.

Talk us through your menu and what you do?

What we try and do is we have a small menu for eat in, but it’s very much a case of what’s in the window is what’s for sale.

In the morning we run pastries, various different Danishes, chocolate croissants and so forth.

Sourdough bread comes up in the morning as well - we do a range of seven different ones. Across the morning the first bakes are coming out the oven about 7.45am and then basically we bake until about 2pm, with the later stuff being sausage rolls, and a variety of pies.

We try and keep with seasonal favours, so at the moment we’ve got lots of broad beans in, so we’ve got chicken and broad bean pies and as

Toasted marshmallow syrup is a neat way round the problem of it being rather off-putting to finish your hot chocolate with a sprinkling of bovine gelatine.

If you’ve never entered the world of coffee syrups, but you’re not averse to trying something new, then a vanilla latte is a good and safe place to start.

Moving forward and further into the realms of sweetness, you could add some hazelnut to your mocha.

If you’re enjoying your syrupy adventure, then take a leap of faith

soon as they’ve finished we’ll switch it up and do something else. And that’s sort of half the fun as well. My aim is for food to come out of the oven, put on the shelf and be sold whilst it’s still hot. And that’s the ideal situation.

and put a shot of chilli in your hot chocolate. Some supposedly artisan coffee merchants won’t allow you the choice of the addition of syrups, but for as long as you’re given free reign of the sugar bowl, we don’t get their point.

We’re big fans of syrup at our place, and we highly recommend you give them a go either at ours or wherever isn’t too hipster or “third wave” to offer you the opportunity.

If my recent experience is anything to go by, there comes a time in every parent’s life where they “cross-over” - from novice to semi-pro. Gone are the days of the new-born where just getting showered and dressed was a Herculean task. And as for the times where conversation struggled to venture beyond the realms of nappies and teething solutions, a distant memory!

(It’s all potty training and toothbrushing now).

The cross-over itself is akin to that moment in a job when you realise that you’ve become so immersed in the company you can no longer explain what it does in one easy-to-understand sentence.

When you reach this point in parenting, be warned that you are but a few weeks away from uttering sentences such as “You’ll wonder what you used to do with all your time,” to prospective parents. In other words, sentences that (rightly) seemed totally ridiculous and improbable to your former self.

How do I know, I hear you ask? Because I am currently treading that very path - I have become a card-carrying member of the parenting establishment.

Allow me to demonstrate: Child-free friends take an inordinate amount of time (24 hours, say) to get back to me and I find myself wondering what they even do all day. When others acknowledge surprise at me responding in a timely manner and/or exercising my organisational prowess, a flicker of pride ignites within: “Oh yes, I am rather marvellous - all this and I’m a parent too! I expect you’re wondering how I do it?!”

It’s surely only a matter of time before this is said out loud and added to the growing list of ridiculous sentences in my repertoire.

One thing’s for sure - there’s no turning back now: I have become a Mother Superior. And I’m not even sorry!

Toronto: ice hockey, art and so much more Richard Morris @BrightonIndy One of the first things any traveller needs to know about Toronto particularly in the colder months (and boy, are they cold) - is that quite a hefty chunk of the city is underground.

Don’t, like your humble narrator, spend the first morning wandering the streets trying to work out where all the locals are only to stumble out of the driving snow into an underground food court and discover thousands of people going about their business without having to brace near-artic conditions.

Toronto, you see, boasts The PATH - more than 30 kilometres of subterranean shopping, restaurants and walkways. It links dozens of offices and is used by an estimated 200,000 commuters every day.

If, however, you like your shopping above ground, Toronto is also home to the giant Eaton Centre, with more than 250 shops and restaurants.

But you don’t fly

all the way to Canada for shops.

Toronto is a haven for art fans, not least because of the stunning Art Gallery of Ontario. The AGO was given a makeover by architect par excellence Frank Gehry and is now a fitting environment in which to showcase its admirable collection, which includes pieces from Monet, Picasso, van Gogh and Henry Moore.

Work from pivotal Canadian artists, including the criticallyacclaimed Group of Seven, are given understandable prominence and provide an interesting insight in the nation’s collective psyche.

For a proper taste of Canadian life, however, any traveller should head for one place and one place only: the Air Canada Centre, home to the city’s beloved Toronto Maple Leafs ice hockey team.

A hectic, break-neck sport played with what is at times unbelievable athleticism, nothing gets the national pulse racing quite like hockey. No trip to Canada is complete without at least a taste of what is without a doubt the country’s favourite pastime.

Hyypiä knows points are needed alongside progress

Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Sami Hyypiä appreciates the need for his stuttering Seagulls side to improve their points haul as soon as possible so as to not risk getting cut off from the higher echelons of the Championship table.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s manager has seen his side’s recent improvement derailed by defeats away to Brentford and Ipswich Town respectively.

But the former Liverpool defender is confident it is just a temporary blip and his charges become accustomed to his system at a time of the season when games thick and fast.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s disappointing defeat at Ipswich, Hyypiä told the Albion’s official website (www.seagulls.co.uk) he was well-aware of the needs to

start chalking up league points.

He said: “We need to get some points for sure.

“We want to finish as high as possible this year and I know that now we are a bit behind but we can’t fall too far behind.

“It’s going to be an even season and anything can happen but we need to get some points on the table.”

He also gave a clear indication that he would continue to rotate his players if necessary having made a string of changes for Tuesday’s game.

He said: “I like to have fresh legs on the pitch.

“We play a lot of games with just three or four days between them and nobody can perform at the highest level in all the games.

“So that keeps all the players on their toes as well. You have to be ready to be play and I like to keep it that way.”

Brighton currently sit 18th

in the Championship, with just two wins from Hyypiä’s opening seven league games in charge.

Four of those games have come against teams in the top half of the table, with Brighton having taken one point from a possible 12 against Charlton, Brentford, Ipswich and surprise package Sheffield Wednesday.

This Saturday’s game with lowly Blackpool, then, comes at a nice time for Hyypiä, with the Albion’s visitors having amassed just a single point and three goals from their seven games.

A win would certainly be welcome among supporters, but the majority of fans accept such a drastic change in system was always likely to take time - particularly with the high turnover of players the Seagulls experienced in the summer - and Hyypiä has won plaudits from supporters for the entertaining, attack-minded approach so far.

Straight from the commentary box It hasn’t been a good week for Albion fans that’s for sure. Two away defeats has left the club down in 18th but concerns from some who contacted the show on Tuesday over relegation are wide of the mark at this early stage of the season.

There were certainly signs of improvement especially in defence at Ipswich and the Seagulls, I felt, deserved something from the game.

The Albion are conceding goals but many supporters have mentioned this week that they are worried about creativity and a cutting edge. I expect João Teixeira to return on Saturday and the Portuguese midfielder is just what the Seagulls need.

Sam Baldock looks sharp and Sami Hyypiä is still testing out different line-ups with his new squad.

It is touch and go whether the Seagulls supporters will get to see one of their more recent creative sources. Andrea Orlandi is an injury doubt for Blackpool at the Amex and therein lies the story. I was a great admirer of the slight midfielder. He regularly added quality on the ball, deft touches and passes.

He is also one of the most charming, if a little cheeky, footballers I’ve met or interviewed. He is thoughtful and considered but positive, much like his football.

The problem for the 30-yearold was his battle with injuries and sporadic appearances for the club last season. He totalled over 50 appearances over 2 years and some were surprised that he was not offered a new contract. The young guard are emerging at the Amex and maybe that was just a sign of the times but I do wish the amiable Spaniard well.

He will no doubt be engulfed by former colleagues and friends this weekend whether he plays or not, and rightly so. He often faced the microphones after defeat when others wouldn’t. Perhaps he should have scored more than six goals for the Seagulls, often failing with some of the easier chances, but I won’t forget his goal that helped the team defeat Premier League side Newcastle in the FA Cup. He is a cultured player and a cultured person, an individual who deserves a warm reception on his return to the Sussex coast.

Match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion v Blackpool

Albion looking for return to home comforts against struggling Blackpool Richard Morris @BHIndyAlbion Ask any club coming off the back of two away defeats who they would like to face in their next match and 99 out of 100 would opt for a struggling team at home.

The fixture list, then, looks like it has been as kind as possible to Sami Hyypiä and Brighton and Hove Albion, with the Seagulls set to go head-to-head with lowly Blackpool at the Amex tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

Fresh from a pair of defeats on the road at Brentford and then Ipswich Town, the Seagulls find themselves in need of a win to thrust them back up the Championship table and in among the promotion-chasers.

Blackpool, on the other hand, are just desperate for any signs the off-the-field shenanigans that have plunged the club into disarray are being put to bed.

The Tangerines arrive on the south coast with a single point to show from their opening seven games and their manager, Jose Riga, has enjoyed a decidedly frosty relationship with controversial chairman Karl Oyston. Riga retains the backing of the overwhelming majority of supporters despite the shaky start to the latest campaign. And earlier this week there were at least some signs of a thawing in relations, with Riga and Oyston said to have held a no holds barred clear the air meeting. It comes after Oyston reportedly approached current Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett to discuss the possibility of taking over at Blackpool.
