The Bridgewater Hall AUTUMN 2022

Whilst cherishing his achievements, Sir Bryn is always refining his craft. “In the classical world, it’s important to constantly add to your repertoire – I can’t just sing the hits every night. It is all about performance, diction and singing in tune; those rudiments are still the essentials.”

According to Sir Bryn, “The set is already locked down in my mind. We’re mixing it up a little on this tour: some concerts will be piano, harp, voice and others will be with an orchestra (Sinfonia Cymru) and conductor Gareth Jones. We know each other well and we have some great orchestrations, so I’m ready to go. I’m certainly going to put in uplifting Ivor Novello songs and some of my favourite operatic arias. We’ll have a young guest singer too, so that I can do some duets. Welsh folk songs will also feature. Some of these songs are melancholic but also filled with such hope – pieces like Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night) implores us all to share the light together.” His 30-year anniversary has quickly crept up on Sir Bryn. “It’s incredible really, three decades at the Royal Opera House. My record label Deutsche Grammophon told me that next year is their 125th anniversary and, again, my 30th with them. They are going to bring out some of my albums on vinyl, which I’m very excited about because as a student I had such a collection, and I bought myself a turntable for Christmas.”

'Scratch a Welshman and he’ll sing for you!' laughs Sir Bryn Terfel.

“The name of the tour is a little nod towards Max Boyce’s Hymns and Arias, but these concerts represent my life. I started by performing the songs my parents sang whilst cradling me as a baby. These songs are special in Wales; they are a part of the household.”

An Interview with bass-baritone Bryn Terfel

'It’s a dream come true to put together a set like this.'

Returning to live performance has been an incredible experience for Sir Bryn and audiences alike. “We want everyone to be safe, but to come and enjoy the music. I’ve just done a sold out run of Peter Grimes at the Royal Opera House and to see that theatre full again, well, it was something that maybe before we took for granted. To be back performing now is a totally different feeling, the enjoyment now is tenfold and that zeal is going to stay with me…”

Curating the setlist for his Bridgewater Hall performance has been a labour of love. Sir Bryn is aware his platform enables him to keep certain repertoire under the spotlight. “This fortunate position in which I find myself in: to be able to have people orchestrate Welsh folk songs for me personally, that means that anyone else can then go on to use them too.”

The much-loved bass-baritone is returning to The Bridgewater Hall this October on his Songs and Arias Tour.

2

Sir Bryn has brought his own stamp to bear on the classics, performing alongside many greats on the way. “One of the first duets I did was with Tom Jones. I did Green Green Grass Of Home – a song I’ve sung forever in my car! I performed his opera Ca Ira with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and sang Roxanne at Sting’s 60th birthday!”

Learning and performing songs he learned at his mother’s knee was the start of an incredible musical journey. “Even after five years in the Guildhall, I wasn’t sure if I was good enough, until I won the last competition there – the Gold Medal. That was the pivotal point that led me to go ahead with this career and not go back to being a farmer with the sheep and cows!”

On Friday 14 October, Sir Bryn Terfel will share the music that has kept him at the pinnacle of opera and concert singing for three decades. As he concludes, “Come along! I will try to entertain you as much as possible. I’m so looking forward to it – it’s what I do.”

Sir Bryn’s musical pursuits have led to amazing highlights. He was the second recipient of the Queen’s Medal For Music and was also knighted for his services to music. “It was astounding for me to think wow, I’ve done enough in my career to be given such an honour”. After that Gold Medal win, his performance at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition (coming second to baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky) opened the floodgates. “From that moment I was off, constantly learning repertoire, trying to be that good colleague whenever I was in one of the world’s great concert halls. I’ve climbed lots of personal Everests. Singing at the Royal Opera House is always very special, as is the Metropolitan in New York and the Scala in Milan; these are tremendous places to even think, who else has sung on that stage? It’s kind of daunting. I never take anything for granted – that is why I am always delighted to be asked back to any concert hall…!"

The Hall’s flagship classical music series brings two remarkable ensembles back to Manchester for the chance to hear history in an entirely different way.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), which opens the series, has appeared with the world’s greatest classical names throughout its 90-year history. The ensemble had performed with the 16 year-old Yehudi Menuhin, playing the Elgar Violin Concerto within its first 12 months. This rich performance history (which also includes numerous world premieres, such as Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7 in 1942, Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No.5 in 1943, and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time in 1944) offers a rich repository to draw on for each new concert. Despite the LPO’s early success, the orchestra nearly didn’t survive its first decade, going into liquidation just seven years after being formed. Taken over by its players, it went on to take part in the first concert at the newly opened Royal Festival Hall and to record all of the world’s national anthems for the London 2012 Olympics.

Two ensembles are appearing at the Hall after two years of Covid-19 cancellations, in the first full International Concert Series season since 2019-20; each with a unique relationship to the past. Experience the music of Handel played on instruments that existed at the time of composition and enjoy a performance from an ensemble that was founded two years before the death of Elgar. Drawing upon an illustrious history and the thrill of creating something new, using historic techniques, these two ensembles are set to give truly special performances.

Ancient wood, strings made from sheep gut, centuries-old construction – have you ever wondered how a double bass made 300 years ago might sound compared to a modern instrument? Or what influence having once been conducted by Elgar might have on an ensemble performing the composer’s Enigma Variations today?

3 The

Edward Gardner conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra

Now highly acclaimed, the LPO joins orchestras from Belgium, Malta, Armenia and Iceland on the International Concert Series 22-23 programme, returning to the Hall for the first time in over four years. Aptly the LPO has a long-standing international outlook, one that saw it become the first British orchestra to appear in Soviet Russia and to tour Australia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and India. Over time the LPO has remained culturally resonant, recording blockbuster film scores from Lawrence of Arabia, to The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Thor: The Dark World. Conducted by a cyberman in a promotional performance for Dr Who, the orchestra took the opportunity to reach new audiences during the pandemic by developing its LPOnline content, achieving over three million views worldwide for videos of performances, interviews and interactive family activities.

This will be the LPO’s first Manchester concert under the direction of Edward Gardner, the organisation’s first British Principal Conductor since the late 1960s. The event marks a welcome return to the city for Gardner, who was formerly Assistant Conductor of the Hallé under Mark Elder. The evening opens with Tchaikovsky’s passionately romantic Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, before Benjamin Grosvenor takes to the stage as the soloist in Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1. The youngest British musician ever to be signed to the Decca Classics record label, Grosvenor performed at the First Night of the 2011 BBC Proms aged just 19. Elgar’s Enigma Variations follow – the composer’s 14 portraits of family and friends, including a piece inspired by the antics of the Hereford Cathedral organist’s dog. It’s a programme curated specifically for The Bridgewater Hall, presented by one of the country’s foremost pianists and a conductor ambitious to make his mark. International Concert Series 22-23: Two extraordinary ensembles return to The Bridgewater Hall

Both drawing on history in a different way, the LPO and OAE present two unmissable concerts for the long-awaited return of the International Concert Series.

Long-established and critically acclaimed, the LPO is one of four resident orchestras at the Southbank Centre, alongside another ensemble returning to Manchester after a long hiatus. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) offers an extraordinary opportunity to hear classical music as it would have sounded when it was first performed. By playing on instruments dating back to the time the music was written, the ensemble gets as close as possible to the effect the composer intended. Audiences today are accustomed to hearing classical music played with modern instruments and techniques; instead, the use of strings made from sheep gut (instead of metal) and wind instruments without valves (unlike their modern counterparts), results in a listening experience that's different from any other orchestra. The OAE's desire to create something new by drawing on the past is even represented by the ensemble’s name, which refers to the notable upsurge of scientific, philosophical and cultural enquiry in the 17th and 18th centuries, commonly referred to as the Age of Enlightenment. Marked by a quest for freedom of ideas and expression, the era finds its echo in the OAE’s collective decision to dispense with a music director and to give some performances without a conductor.

Handel’s repertoire, which forms the centrepiece of the OAE’s performance for the International Concert Series, falls under this category. Part of the orchestra’s Songs of Travel season, the concert features an inventive survey of the composer’s music from some of its foremost experts – from much-loved arias to a Concerto Grosso in which the music passes between the full orchestra and a small group of soloists. Director Steven Devine (owner of an astonishing number of harpsichords) is joined by acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge (nominated for 15 Grammys) with the programme rounded out by lesser-heard pieces from Handel’s predecessor, Georg Muffat. Informed by hours of research to understand the programme’s performance history, Handel might recognise the music as it was played in his day, were he to sit in the auditorium.

Erland Cooper Window onto Rackwick (world premiere) Gipps Overture ‘Chanticleer’

Beethoven Symphony No.9 in D minor, ‘Choral’ To celebrate BBC Philharmonic's centenary year, the orchestra will perform a very special concert at the Hall. In 2005, the orcheatra released recordings of Beethoven’s nine symphonies as free downloads and, within a week, Beethoven became the most downloaded artist in the UK. To celebrate Beethoven’s enduring popularity, the orchestra will perform his epic Ninth Symphony, continuing to champion rarely performed and newly written music. Hear Ruth Gipps’s Chanticleer overture and a brand-new piece by Erland Cooper, in tribute to Peter Maxwell Davies’s long and close association with the BBC Philharmonic. Here’s to the next 100 years!

The Hallé - Verdi’s Requiem Sir Mark Elder conductor Natalyia Romaniw soprano Alice Coote mezzo-soprano Thomas Atkins tenor James Platt bass Hallé MatthewChoirHamilton choral director Thursday 27 October 7.30pm Verdi Messa da Requiem Verdi is in Sir Mark’s blood; he’s conducted his music more than any other composer. The Requiem was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, writer and humanist, whom Verdi admired and hoped to emulate through his music. The piece was initially controversial because of Verdi’s overt operatic approach to a sacred text, as he responded to every nuance of the words. It’s a technically demanding tour de force, but together with the superb Hallé Choir, Sir Mark has assembled a stellar line up of soloists familiar to Hallé audiences, to perform what he describes as ‘this so powerful, deeply felt work’.
