The Bridgewater Hall SUMMER 2025

bit: in this intimate show, Daltrey will be performing acoustic and semi-acoustic takes on classic tracks, accompanied by a nine-piece band. Better still, he’ll be opening the floor to the audience for a Q&A session about his storied career. Chat to the man behind the myth while listening to some of his biggest songs — what more could you ask for?

Hawkwind

Sunday 11 May

Space rock pioneers Hawkwind touch down at the Hall in support of their new studio album, There Is No Space For Us. Known for their anarchic, psychedelic sound and multimedia spectacles featuring wild dance and projections, this new release promises to develop on the dystopian themes that have characterised the band’s most recent albums. Unheard tracks and classic hits combine with epic laser displays for a show that demonstrates why Hawkwind have lasted the distance over their 50 year career. Get lost in space listening to their expansive soundscapes.

The Waterboys

Tuesday 13 May

Joining the roster of ‘80s icons are The Waterboys, first formed in Edinburgh in 1983. Lead singer and guitarist Mike Scott has been a constant from the start, joined by more than 80 bandmates over the decades, and has written or co-written all of the band’s songs — including enduring hits Fisherman’s Blues and The Whole of the Moon. Hear tracks from across the band’s career reconfigured live on stage, from their early ‘Big Music’ sound, through to the genre-fluid records the band has produced in the last ten years. Drawing on influences from soul, funk and country rock, sink into the unmistakable musical signature of this ever-evolving outfit.

Cat Power Sings Dylan ‘66

Monday 2 June

Manchester’s former Free Trade Hall hosted some legendary concerts over the years: the Sex Pistols gig that inspired a generation of bands, David Bowie performing Ziggy Stardust and the gig in which Bob Dylan switched to electric in 1966. One of the most fabled live sets of all time, the concert saw Dylan dubbed ‘Judas’ by a heckler from the audience — and became a pivotal moment in music history. Now Cat Power, an icon in her own right, is delivering a song-for-song rendition of that historic line-up, infusing warmth and joy into a set list made electric by defiance on the night. Experience a moment of transition that has become myth, almost 60 years later.

The Robert Cray Band

Thursday 5 June

Five Grammy Awards, an induction into the Blues Hall of Fame and an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance — singersongwriter Robert Cray is not short of accolades. Known as one of the best guitarists of his generation, Cray has performed alongside Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker and more. Touring and recording since 1974, The Robert Cray Band brings a back catalogue spanning four decades to the Hall, delivered with unerring energy and enthusiasm. Cray’s motto is ‘today is all that matters' — join him in this spirit for an evening.

The Hallé — From The New World

Marta Gardolińska conductor

Alena Baeva violin

Thursday 1 May 7.30pm

Copland Appalachian Spring: Suite

Barber Violin Concerto

Dvorák Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’

Marta Gardolińska, Music Director of the Opéra national de Lorraine, conducts this programme of conflict and resolution.

With its beautifully broad ranges of tonal colour, tinged with the trials of the American Civil War, it is easy to see why Copland’s score for Appalachian Spring earned him a Pulitzer Prize. Following this work, Alena Baeva will step onto the platform to perform Barber’s Violin Concerto, a piece which similarly vacillates between contentment and conflict.

The ‘New World ’Symphony was one of the triumphs of Dvorák’s musical career, and has been adored by audiences ever since. Aptly it accompanied Neil Armstrong on his first trip to the moon, and in a rather more down-to-earth context, the symphony’s second movement was used in the 1973 Ridley Scott-directed ‘Hovis ’advert.

BBC Philharmonic — Let me tell you

Elena Schwarz conductor

Jennifer France soprano

Saturday 17 May 7.30pm

Beethoven Overture, Coriolan

Hans Abrahamsen Let me tell you Unsuk Chin subito con forza

Beethoven Symphony No. 1

Beethoven may be centre stage, but Shakespeare is once more in the wings for an extraordinary programme conducted by Elena Schwarz.

Ophelia, Hamlet’s doomed lover, narrates Hans Abrahamsen’s prize-winning song cycle Let me tell you.

With a vivid and virtuosic role, Jennifer France becomes an empowered and defiant heroine worthy of a Scandi drama. Roman General Coriolanus appears in tonight’s curtain raiser; fortunately, Beethoven’s version is more child friendly than Shakespeare’s. Coriolan is also the starting point of Unsuk Chin’s miniature for orchestra, subito con forza. Powerful and impulsive, Unsuk Chin pulls no punches in her homage to Beethoven, surely something he would have approved of!

Beethoven’s symphonic canon is to the concert platform what Shakespeare’s plays are to the stage. We join the man taking Vienna by storm at the start of his journey with the ebullient First Symphony. (Exit, pursued by a bear).

International Concert Series — Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Grzegorz Nowak conductor Wen-Sinn Yang cello Monday 19 May 7.30pm

Jeffrey Ching Il maestro di capella (premiere) Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4, ‘Italian’ Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations

Elgar Nimrod from Enigma Variations Bizet Carmen Suite No. 1 Tchaikovsky Swan Lake Suite

One of the most exciting orchestras in Southeast Asia, the Philippine Philharmonic from Manila, have in recent years been impressing audiences and critics across the world.

This programme is a celebration of unforgettable tunes and easy-to-love classics. You’ll hear the joyful and colourful sounds of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, inspired by his travels through sun-soaked 19th-century Italy. Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite delivers some of the most famous and enchanting ballet melodies ever composed, while his Rococo Variations, performed by the renowned cellist Wen-Sinn Yang, is a sparkling, elegant piece filled with charm and wit.

The evening also offers the familiar and stirring Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a piece that never fails to move with its warmth and grandeur, and the lively, drama-filled highlights of Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1. Plus, experience something new and thrilling with a world premiere by composer Jeffrey Ching, adding a fresh touch to this evening of timeless favourites.

Thursday 29 May 7.30pm

Unsuk Chin Šu

Beethoven Symphony No.9, ‘Choral’

Kahchun Wong is joined by a host of acclaimed soloists and the full forces of the Hallé and Hallé Choir for this triumphant season finale.

Rapturously received by the audience at its 1824 premiere, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony remains a firm favourite today. By this time, Beethoven was profoundly deaf and had to be gently turned to face the audience to accept their adulation, which was shown by the waving of hands, hats and handkerchiefs as well as multiple standing ovations.

Internationally-renowned Sheng player Wu Wei opens the programme with a gorgeous performance of Unsuk Chin’s Šu. Composed especially for him, it is a shimmering example of the wide range of tonal colour offered by this ancient instrument.

Saturday 14 June 7.30pm

Mahler Symphony No. 3

‘My music is always the voice of nature.’

A hymn to the natural world, Gustav Mahler takes on the elements in a work like no other. Writing for huge forces, Mahler was so consumed by his Third Symphony that he was convinced that it had a life of its own. Indeed, it has all the energy of an offshore wind farm — but whilst this is music of the Earth, it is also music of the soul. Here, Mahler is on a spiritual quest, one of extreme emotional highs and lows. The earthshattering climax is a paean to love.

We welcome contralto Jess Dandy and the joint choral forces of the Hallé Choir, the CBSO Children’s Chorus and CBSO Youth Chorus as John Storgårds steers us through Mahler’s unique panorama for a stunning season finale.
