ANALYSIS

SITE AREA

Environment analysis is conducted to understand the local culture and ensure the design establishes a strong connection with it. This approach allows the design to reflect the cultural essence of the place, maintaining its identity while presenting it in a transformed, modern form that still carries the environmental theme.

NEARBY HISTORICAL PLACE

SELF OBSERVATION

After walking around Longshan Temple, I discovered something inter area: the homeless population exhibits a surprising sense of ownership space. They actively maintain it by cleaning, which contrasts shar common stereotypes about homelessness. The district also showcases between developed and underdeveloped areas, blending the charm with modern elements. Even the distinctive road design around Longshan pears intentionally crafted to highlight the unique character of the ar

BACKGROUND

The LongshanTemple district inTaipei is home to a significant homeless population, largely due to its history as a former central hub of the city. As Taipei's main city center shifted, many less fortunate individuals remained in this area. As a result, they are suffering from difficulties in maintaining a sustainable life and struggling to find a place to stay.

CASE STUDY

The Sanchakou Public Toilet

The Sanchakou Public Toilet, designed by Shulin Architectural Design, was selected for analysis due to its similarity to a previous project. This study focuses on its design elements and their application. The project stands out for its clear directional flow, the use of pillars to create connected spaces, and the integration of an existing tree into the design. Uniquely, it achieves balance by incorporating a tall structure that harmonizes with the preserved tree.

Zhuzai Village Public Toilet

Zhuzai Village Public Toilet by atelier cnS made a design that imitate the serounding by using the material from old building and compile it together. To make it more interesting they also arrage it in a unique way that makes the wall have a tranparancy in the deisgn. The architecture design also have a good space management by giving space for the tree to become the element of the deisgn and also using the roof as a rest platform is a good way tomake use of a space.

The Rest Space at the Top of Rokko

The Rest Space at the Top of Rokko is a design by Ofa studio and from this project I am able to see that the main goal is to create a direction for the scenery which is the mountain. The design also use the place efectively by making the wall as a chair for people to relax which is a new way of thinking.

CONCEPT

ELEMENT

Homeless People

Not all homeless people are bad because many of them wanted to improve their lives and live like everyone else. They just need opportunities and support to help them grow and move forward.

Tourists are usually shown only the best parts of a destination but rarely informed about its challenges. Longshan Temple is one of the example that has a large homeless population. It’s important to show that homelessness exists here in Taipei, but also that there are programs to help these individuals improve their lives and work toward a better future.

PROGRAM

IKIGAI

Ikigai, a Japanese concept, emphasizes finding purpose and balance by aligning passion, skills, societal benefit, and financial stability. Paired with yin and yang, which symbolizes external harmony, these ideas promote inner and outer equilibrium. Together, they provide a framework for creating spaces that inspire connection, purpose, and balance.

YIN & YANG

This shape was selected as it embodies the essence of yin and yang, with a central open space facilitating movement. The design incorporates a clear separation: one side functions as a residential area for the homeless, while the other features an information center and café designed to encourage interaction between tourists and the homeless.

FLOOR & ROOF SYSTEM

The flooring emphasizes ikigai as central to the design, using contrasting patterns to symbolize balance. Inspired by the roads near Longshan Temple, it combines plain textures and brick patterns, creating unity with the surrounding environment.

The roof's unique pattern symbolizes ikigai, with a central focal point offering an immersive experience. Its design repeats the ikigai motif, combining shadows and transparent elements to reflect the yin and yang balance of light and dark.
