What is the difference between a symphony, an orchestra, and a philharmonic?
The short answer is: NOTHING! Among the top tier orchestras in the US are the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony
The word “orchestra” refers to a group of musicians performing a concert. “Symphony” means harmony. “Philharmonic” is the love of harmony. Different orchestras may choose their names based on how it sounds with their city or state name, to differentiate it from other orchestras in the same city or area, or just because they like one better than the others.
How long are the performances?
Most concerts last approximately 2 hours, including a 15 minute intermission. Any significant exceptions to this will be noted on the individual concert page on our website Each performance is divided into two parts with an intermission in the middle.
When should I clap?
Generally, you clap only after a piece is finished For example, if you’re listening to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, which has four movements, it is generally considered appropriate to only clap after the last movement. You can look at your program book to find out how many movements a piece has. Usually, there is a short pause between movements, although sometimes there is no discernible gap. If you’re unsure, you’ll know the piece is over when Maestro Confessore turns around to face the audience. However, even though the norm is to remain quiet between movements, if you are moved to clap after a particularly exciting movement, feel free to clap away!
How many musicians are on stage?
Typically there are approximately 65 musicians on stage. The number of musicians depends on the piece being performed. At times we’ve had a smaller orchestra and, at other times, we’ve had as many as 100 musicians on stage.
Will I recognize any of the music?
You’ll probably recognize far more than you would have imagined Many of today’s popular songs, television shows, and movies use classical themes, including the “Lone Ranger” theme (Rossini’s William Tell Overture), the Bugs Bunny cartoon “What’s Opera, Doc?” (Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries), Billy Joel’s “This Night” (Beethoven’s Pathétique Piano Sonata), to name a few.
What kind of accommodations does the King Center provide for patrons with disabilities and impairments?
The King Center offers a variety of accommodations for guests with ADA requirements. Please speak to an usher for more information

Widely regarded as our greatest American-born composer, Aaron Copland was born on November 14, 1900 in Brooklyn. Early in his career, Copland’s music was brash, dissonant, and urban. While these strident works enjoyed critical acclaim, Copland had a strong desire to make a connection with a larger audience and he began to adapt his compositional style to be more accessible. His collaborations with three great choreographers helped Copland find his way to that iconic American sound we all know and love.
In 1937, Copland was approached by Lincoln Kirstein and Eugene Loring about writing the score to a ballet based on scenes from the life of the western renegade William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. Copland accepted the project and incorporated a few songs from the American West into his score – Goodbye Old Paint, Git Along Little Doggies, The Old Chisolm Trail. In 1942, Agnes de Mille approached Copland with an idea for a ballet about a day at the Rodeo Copland was reluctant to compose another ballet score that he thought might be similar in style to Billy the Kid, but DeMille was so persuasive he accepted the commission. DeMille played the lead role of a tomboy/cowgirl and Copland created a colorful and thrilling score that concludes with the famous Hoe-Down.
Copland’s masterpiece – Appalachian Spring – came to be thanks to the generosity of philanthropist Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, and the tenacity of choreographer Martha Graham. Coolidge was a supporter of the Library of Congress’ Music Division. There is a lovely recital hall at the Library of Congress, built in the 1920s, that bears her name. Coolidge and Graham wanted to commission a new ballet score by the leading composer of the day, Aaron Copland. Graham approached Copland about the project that had a scenario, but no title. It was to be a pioneer celebration that takes place as a young couple moves into a newly built Pennsylvania farmhouse in the early part of the 19th century. The Coolidge Auditorium was conceived as a recital hall – 500 seats – excellent acoustics, but a small stage. Due to lack of space, Copland was limited to using 10-12 musicians for this score. In the end, he lobbied for a total of 13 musicians for the ballet’s orchestra.
Working without a title, Copland’s manuscripts are all marked “Ballet for Martha.” Not long before the premiere, Copland asked Graham if she had decided on a title and she replied “Yes, Appalachian Spring. ” She told him that it was taken from a poem by Hart Crane. When Copland asked if the poem had anything to do with the ballet, Graham replied “No, I just liked the title, and I took it ” For decades, Copland loved to remark that audience members would frequently approach him saying, `Mr. Copland, when I see that ballet and when I hear your music, I can just see the Appalachians, and I can feel Spring."
Edward Denby penned the following composer-approved scenario for the ballet: “The bride-to-be and the young farmer-husband enact the emotions, joyful and apprehensive, which their new domestic partnership invites. An old neighbor suggests, now and then, the rocky confidence of experience. A revivalist and his followers remind the new householders of the strange and terrible aspects of human fate. At the end the couple are left quiet and strong in their new house.”
After the ballet’s score won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music, Copland was anxious for the music to be heard by audiences in the concert hall He created a Concert Suite scored for standard orchestra, which is the version we almost always hear in performance and on recordings – and it is the version you’ll hear us perform this evening.
Composed in 2016 for the Indianapolis Children’s Choirs, Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo is scored for SATB choir, youth choir, soprano and alto solos with full orchestra The work brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, “O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. The opening movement sets the ancient liturgical Latin translation of the Psalm in a rather American musical idiom, reflecting various influences from the composer’s native country and introducing key musical motives for the work. The second movement sets the “from age to age” portion of the text in Hebrew and Arabic, evoking ancient cultures from the Middle East. The music intentionally intertwines the two languages in a symbolic gesture of unity between these cultures
Movement three uses Mandarin Chinese in a tranquil setting of the shepherd-sheep metaphor from the traditional text and quotes “the Lord is my shepherd” from Psalm 23, while the orchestra evokes the sounds of traditional Asian instruments. The fourth movement shifts to Africa, setting celebratory portions of the text in Zulu and drawing from African vocal and drumming traditions. Movement five represents Latin America, setting Spanish text to a folk-song style melody and blending traditional folk instrumental sounds with polyphonic textures from the classical choral tradition. The sixth movement, “Song of the Earth,” portrays the Earth itself singing first wordlessly, but eventually finding its own voice and leads seamlessly into the final movement. The finale unites many of the key themes and cultures from previous movements with other material, both old and new, as all the earth sings as one, “omnis terra, jubilate!"
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth!

The Brevard Symphony Orchestra remembers our dear friend and colleague, Gary Mousseau. Gary played as a regular member of the Bass section since 1989 and dedicated his entire career to Music Education. Gary taught for 35 years in Brevard and Hillsborough public schools. Thousands of students from Pre-K to 12th grade have not only learned to play music, but also benefited from his amazing kindness and devotion to their joyful pursuit of learning.
Gary is survived by his wife Maureen, his children Justin (Casey) and Jenna (Tyler), his brothers Scott (Julie) and Chris (Lisa), and many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Gary touched the hearts of so many with his kindness, generosity and true concern for others. In honoring Gary, we celebrate the love he shared and the indelible mark he left on the world. May we all follow his example by offering grace and love to others without boundaries.
The BSO dedicates this evening’s performance of Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo to Gary’s memory. This joyful work’s celebration of inclusiveness reflects what we all loved about our dear friend.

The BSO South Guild was developed to act as a fundraising and support group. The mission of the South Guild is to promote and financially support the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. This is accomplished through member and community involvement in fundraising activities designed to highlight both the organization and the orchestra. Membership is open year-round to those interested in actively supporting the BSO.
We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to visit local business and distribute brochures, posters, and spread the word about the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. Local businesses can also participate by choosing to host BSO information on their storefront windows or in their lobbies.
From answering phones, to providing help with mailings, to cleaning and organizing, the BSO office staff is always happy to accept help during the work week.
As a non-profit orchestra, ticket proceeds only cover approximately one-fourth of the orchestra’s expenses. Thanks to the financial commitment of hundreds of BSO supporters, we are able to provide you with six exciting subscription performances as well as many others each season. You can contribute financially as an individual donor, corporate sponsor, or program advertiser.
