What is the difference between a symphony, an orchestra, and a philharmonic?
The short answer is: NOTHING! Among the top tier orchestras, in the U.S., are the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony
The word “orchestra” defines a group of musicians performing a concert. “Symphony” means harmony. “Philharmonic” is the love of harmony. Orchestras may choose their names based on how it sounds with their city or state name, or to differentiate it from other orchestras in the same city or area.
How long are the performances?
Most concerts last approximately 2 hours, including a 15 minute intermission. Any significant exceptions to this time frame will be noted on the individual concert page on our website. Each performance is divided into two parts, with an intermission in the middle
When should I clap?
Generally, you clap only after a piece of music is completed. For example, if you’re listening to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, which has four movements, it is generally considered appropriate to only clap after the last movement. You can look at your program book to find out how many movements a piece has. Usually, there is a short pause between movements. Although, sometimes there is no discernible gap If you’re unsure, you’ll know the piece is over when Maestro Confessore turns around to face the audience. However, even though the norm is to remain quiet between movements, if you are moved to display your appreciation after a particularly exciting movement, feel free to clap away!
How many musicians are on stage?
Typically, there are approximately 65 musicians on stage. The number of musicians required depends on the piece being performed. At times, we’ve had a smaller orchestra and, at other times, we’ve had as many as 100 musicians on stage.
Will I recognize any of the music?
You’ll probably recognize far more than you would imagine Many of today’s popular songs, television shows and movies use classical themes, including the “Lone Ranger” theme (Rossini’s William Tell Overture), the Bugs Bunny cartoon “What’s Opera, Doc?” (Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries) and Billy Joel’s “This Night” (Beethoven’s Pathétique Piano Sonata), to name a few.
What kind of accommodations does the King Center provide for patrons with disabilities and impairments?
The King Center offers a variety of accommodations for guests with ADA requirements. Please speak to an usher for more information.

Te Deum laudamus: te Dominum confitemur
Te aeternum patrem, omnis terra veneratur
Tibi omnes Angeli: tibi caeli et universae potestates
Tibi cherubim et seraphim, incessabili voce proclamant: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth Pleni sunt caeli et terra maiestatis gloriae tuae.
Te gloriosus Apostolorum chorus
Te Prophetarum laudabilis numerus
Te Martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus
Te per orbem terrarum sancta confitetur
Ecclesia:
Patrem immensae maiestatis;
Venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium; Sanctum quoque Paraclitum Spiritum
Tu rex gloriae, Christe:
Tu Patris sempiternus es Filius
Tu, ad liberandum suscepturus hominem, Non horruisti Virginis uterum
Tu, devicto mortis aculeo
Aperuisti credentibus regna caelorum
Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, in gloria Patris
Judex crederis esse venturus
Te ergo quaesumus, tuis famulis subveni: Quos pretioso sanguine redemisti
Aeterna facum sanctis tuis in gloria numerari
Salvum fac populum tuum, Domine, Et benedic hereditati tuae.
Et rege eos, et extolle illos usque in aeternum
Per singulos dies benedicimus te: Et laudamus nomen tuum in saeculum, et in saeculum saeculi
You, God, we praise; You, Lord, we confess [that] You, eternal Father, all earth venerates or worships
To you all the angels, to you the heavens and universal powers,
To you cherubim and seraphim with incessant voice proclaim or cry: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Filled are the heavens and the earth [with the] majesty of the glory of you.
You the glorious apostolic choir,
You the prophets praiseworthy and numerous, You the martyrs in white robes [all] praise [as an] exercised or disciplined force
You [are] throughout the globe of the world in holiness confessed [by] the church, Father of immense majesty;
The one to be venerated or worshipped, your true and unique or only Son, The holy one likewise the Paraclete, the Spirit.
You are the king of glory, O Christ:
You of the Father everlastingly are the Son. You the liberation undertook [of, for] man [You] did not abhor, reject or dread the Virgin’s uterus or womb.
You defeated death’s sting.
You] did open to believers the kingdom of heaven You at the right [hand] of God sit in the glory of the Father.
As Judge you are believed to be coming or returning. You therefore we beseech or beg Your servants to assist. Whom [by your] precious blood you have redeemed Eternally make them with or as part of the saints of yours in glory numbered. Salvation grant to people of yours, Lord, And bless the inheritance that is yours. And rule over them, and exalt or praise them even in eternity Through every single day we bless you: And we praise the name of you forever, and forever and ever.
Dignare, Domine, die isto sine peccato nos custodire
Miserere nostri, Domine, miserere nostri
Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos Quemadmodum speravimus in te
In te, Domine, speravi: non confundar in aeternum
Deem it worthy, Lord, today this [this very day] without sin us to preserve or keep. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us. Let it be done that mercy your, Lord, be upon us. Even as we have hoped in you In you, Lord, have I hoped: let me not be confounded or condemned in eternity.
O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern laßt uns angenehmere anstimmen, Und freudenvollere.
Freude!
Freude!
Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen. Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such’ ihn über’m Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.
O friends, not these tones!
But let’s strike up more agreeable ones, And more joyful.
Joy!
Joy!
Joy, beautiful spark of Divinity, Daughter of Elysium, We enter, drunk with fire, Heavenly one, thy sanctuary!
Thy magic binds again
What custom strictly divided; All people become brothers, Where thy gentle wing abides. Whoever has succeeded in the great attempt, To be a friend’s friend, Whoever has won a lovely woman, Add his to the jubilation!
Yes, and also whoever has just one soul
To call his own in this world!
And he who never managed it should slink
Weeping from this union!
All creatures drink of joy
At nature’s breasts.
All the Just, all the Evil
Follow her trail of roses.
Kisses she gave us and grapevines, A friend, proven in death.
Ecstasy was given to the worm
And the cherub stands before God. Gladly, as His suns fly through the heavens’ grand plan
Go on, brothers, your way, Joyful, like a hero to victory. Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss to all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father. Are you collapsing, millions?
Do you sense the creator, world? Seek him above the starry canopy!
Above stars must He dwell
