Restoration project underway by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer

A ground-breaking wetland restoration project that has been more than 15 years in the making is now just weeks away from breaking ground in Oakley. The Dutch Slough Tidal Marsh Restoration project is slated to start construction next month. The project is an effort by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to restore nearly 1,200 acres of critically needed habitat for fish and wildlife in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. A DWR description of the project states the restoration of these habitats is considered a critical action to increase numbers of native sensitive species and improve general ecological health of the Delta. “This is large-scale restoration that everybody’s been talking about,” said Mike Moran, supervising naturalist at

DWR program manager Patty Finfrock is part of the team working on the Dutch Slough Tidal Marsh Restoration Project. The plans calls for the restoration of nearly 1,200 acres of habitat for fish and wildlife.

Back by popular demand, the family team of women running La Grande Wedding & Event Center in Oakley will host another Empowering Women event. As event experts with thousands of weddings under their belts, the Bragg family had seen its share of vendors offering services that ranged in everything from photography and baking to catering and more. But when the matriach of this three-generational business Theresa Bragg, 79, and her daughter Renee Bragg recognized that about 70 percent of those vendors were women, they decided to host a special day to honor them. The event took place in the midst of the #MeToo movement last fall, and the Braggs knew many other women needed uplifting see Women page 22A
