The Antioch school board recently voted to guarantee benefits for teachers for the next three years, but increased salaries by only 1.5 percent, less than the 2.3 percent cost-of-living adjustment teacherse received from the state.

Plans to bring a Lazy Dog Restaurant to Brentwood have been put to rest again after the developer announced they have no plans to build more locations in California anytime soon due to tariffs and other costs.

“The City of Brentwood sought the addition of Lazy Dog Diner, and the community desired this restaurant almost as much as Costco. There’s been lots of interest and inquiries from local residents,” Economic Development Manager Ricardo Noguera said via email. “Unfortunately, despite regular communications with the developer…the restaurant’s partner based in Southern California notified me last spring 2025, that due to the construction costs, tariffs, etc. in California, that he was putting a halt on new restaurants in the state for the foreseeable future.”

Tips on how to stay healthy during cold, flu season

The California Department of Public Health says seasonal influenza activity is rising in the Bay Area and in Southern California, along with RSV, and that hospitalizations are low, but are expected to rise.

That’s because with the winter months here, Christmas and New Years are around the corner. That also means more parties, gatherings, and family get-togethers, which can also mean an increasing likelihood of the common cold and the flu during this time of the year.

Flu season in the Northern Hemisphere runs from October through May, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Data shows that 20 million to 40 million people in the United States catch the flu during every flu season, with the peak usually happening between December and February.

Dr. Raheel Kahn at Sutter Health, offers some general reminders on how people can try to stay healthy during this holiday season with the stress of travel and the potential of bugs going around.

“I think the number one tip would be to get your vaccines, such as flu and COVID,” Khan said. “Remember, it takes about two weeks for these vaccines to really take effect, so get them at least a few weeks before any planned trips or get-togethers.

“Also important to remember, vaccines don’t prevent you from getting the illness, they help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death.”

Khan also emphasized the importance of basic hygiene, particularly immediately before meals. People are encouraged to wash hands with soap and water, particularly after touching public and shared surfaces, or coughing and sneezing.

In addition, eating consistently and

adequate sleep are key, as is avoiding alcohol and caffeine too late in the day.

Additionally, while vitamins can help, Khan stressed to not overtake vitamins, which can lead to toxicity in rare cases. “Proper rest, nutrition, and hydration go a long way in keeping your body strong and healthy,” Khan said.

“Hydration is a big one, since it’s harder to remember to drink water when you’re cold versus when you’re hot.”

Khan also advised people to not “power through” if you are feeling bad, especially with severe symptoms.

Also, he advised to not share drinks and utensils, especially at large gatherings, while also stressing the importance of remembering to take breaks if you are stressed, and to stay home if you are feeling sick.

“The best thing people can do is rest well and eat a good meal,” Khan said.

“A balanced diet consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein provides the nutrients immune cells need.

One can also utilize Vitamin D3, C, Zinc, Elderberry, and Echinacea. Healthy habits in general are better than any vitamin.”

For those traveling during the holiday season, Khan said while masks can be helpful, they are no longer mandatory on planes.

Additionally, travel sanitary kits containing hand wipes, sanitizer, face masks, and fever reducer should be considered, along with taking disinfectant wipes to wipe down high-touch surface areas in hotels and on airplanes, Khan said.

“Overall, don’t exhaust yourself,” Khan said. “If you feel sick, stay home.”

‘It seemed like such a wonderful opportunity’ The Brentwood Community Chorus has a new director

The Brentwood Community Chorus has found a new director after three seasons of searching. It’s San Francisco conductor, composer, and organist Don Scott Carpenter. With over 30 years of experience leading many varieties of musical organizations, Carpenter is the founding music director of the Vox Humana SF choir, a professional chorus that performs pieces from the last 500 years, and of the Zephyr Symphony orchestra.

The Brentwood Community Chorus is “a group of men and women of all ages from the SF East Bay who get together to share their love of singing,” according to their website. Carpenter is the first fulltime music director at the Chorus since the departure of founder Susan Stewart in May 2024 after 14 years of service. Two temporary directors, Eli Souza and Jodi Aldredge, led the Chorus while the board searched for a replacement. Carpenter happened upon the job opening while browsing LinkedIn in summer 2025, and was intrigued by what he saw.

“I did some digging, “ Carpenter said. “From what I could tell online,

I have enough on my plate, but it seemed like such a wonderful opportunity.”

Upon auditioning for the position of music director, Carpenter said he was immediately impressed by the Chorus’ commitment to integration with Brentwood’s community, a value he strongly shares, and by how different it was from his current projects.

“When I was here a couple of months ago for the audition, I met an amazing amount of people,” Carpenter said. “The board of the Brentwood Community

Chorus is absolutely phenomenal, they’re first-rate, they’re totally engaged in what’s going on, not only with the chorus, but with the community. Brentwood Community Chorus is definitely different from anything else I’m presently doing, and I think that’s why it engaged me, because it wasn’t me doing the same thing somewhere else, but something very different.

When I came to the audition, there were 80 amazing musicians in the room [aged] 16 to 86, I believe they said. That’s an amazing thing as well, that’s not a normal community chorus, so it’s really great that Brentwood has that.”

As music director, Carpenter is responsible for putting together “invigorating” programming for the Chorus, using themes chosen by the Chorus as guides to create their shows, such as the upcoming spring show “Broadway Baby,” which will “cover the gamut of Broadway [music]” with 15 selections from various musicals, including “Hamilton,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Next to Normal.” In addition, Carpenter must also ensure that every Chorus member is working well together.

“But of course, it’s also in rehearsals, making sure everyone is on the same page,” he explained. “You have such a diverse age range. You have some [people] with extensive music experience, you have some who just like to sing, and both are obviously very welcome. You have 16-year-olds and 86-year-olds, so the

learning process is different, and even the memory process is different. Part of my job is making sure that everyone is engaged at all times, feeling included.”

Carpenter’s goal as a music director is to expand the reach of the Chorus, allowing “more people at the table to share art” through singing as well as other art forms, such as dancing and playing instruments. He also hopes to collaborate with other community organizations, such as the Bristow Middle School band, which he said was “very, very good.” For the moment, however, his focus is on the spring concert.

“I only officially started Dec. 1, so there’s still a lot to do,” Carpenter said.

“Presently, the concert for spring is planned and that’s about it. But I know that we’re going to be talking in the new year about how to really expand and do some new things, while of course maintaining what we have, building on what we have.”

In addition to his experience leading musical organizations, from symphonies to choirs, in performances across America and even in Europe, Carpenter said that he will bring “a really strong spirit” and an engaging personality to the Chorus.

“I am a shy person when you first meet me, but once I feel comfortable with you, I will talk to the point that you’ll want me to stop talking,” Carpenter said with a laugh. “I think I bring that to the table see Chorus page 5A

Deck the Park trees bring a ‘magical scene’ to downtown Brentwood

Deck the Park in Brentwood City Park is in full swing for the holiday season. Participants were encouraged to show their creativity, promote their business or support the community by purchasing a live Christmas tree to decorate for the Deck the Park Christmas Tree Decorating Contest.

Mayor Susannah Meyer and the Brentwood Parks and Recreation staff explained why this display is a community favorite.

“Deck the Park is Brentwood’s annual December tradition where holiday spirit goes public and competitive, in a friendly way,” Meyer said. “Each year, residents, local businesses, nonprofits, schools and sports teams, and community groups purchase a tree and transform it into a festive masterpiece. The City supplies the lights and participants handle the decorations, theme, and fun. The result is City Park filled with uniquely decorated trees that reflect the creativity, humor, information and personality of the Brentwood community. It’s part celebration and part showcase.”

“The best part of Deck the Park is watching the community come together, everyone bringing their own personality, creativity, and over-the-top holiday spirit to their tree,” Meyer said. “Each one is different, but together they create a genuinely magical scene that feels festive, welcoming, and very Brentwood. It’s also one of those unique events where businesses, nonprofits, families, and neighbors all end up side by side, learning more about the community we live and do business in. My favorite thing to witness is families taking in all of the trees in a slow tour, enjoying the lights and decorations and absorbing the holiday magic.”

It is free to view the decorated trees in City Park.

“Deck the Park brings in people from all over East Contra Costa County each year,” Meyer said. “It builds connection, creates a sense of pride and public ownership, encourages local engagement, and brings people downtown. as well, I’m engaging. Even in rehearsal, several weeks ago, I remember a teenager, I don’t even remember what the conversation was now, but she responded, and we had this immediate dialogue, it was just really great. It was sort of a reminder to myself that I like to engage people.”

Carpenter said that he is committed to being the long-term music director of the Chorus, despite his other projects in San Francisco and the distance between that city and Brentwood.

“I’ve said before, in other things in my life, I should’ve stayed four or five

years, and I looked at the calendar and I’ve been there 11,” he said. “I’m definitely not someone who does this for three months, then does that for three months.

It’s just not my style. If you’re building a community, you’re also building friendships, and those oftentimes are stronger than the whole. I can’t answer the question, but I have no plans of leaving anytime soon.”

Kids recognized for designing official Oakley police Christmas cards Each year, the Oakley Police Department sends holiday cards out to all of its allied agencies and community partners. This year, the department continued its tradition of having school-aged children compete to see whose artwork will be used as the design for the annual cards. This year yielded two

he Brentwood Union School District Special Education Department hosted an All Abilities Family event last Friday at Garin Elementary School. The Karaoke Pajama Jam, complete with a festive holiday twist, welcomed nearly 50 students and their families for an evening of fun. Participants enjoyed activities, including pizza and cocoa, a photo booth, karaoke performances, and a special visit from Santa Claus. The BUSD All Abilities Family events are designed to provide inclusive, childcentered experiences while strengthening connections between parents, families and the school community. City Manager G. Harold Duffey has appointed Kerry D. Breen to serve as Interim Assistant City Manager for the City of Brentwood, effective immediately. Breen’s appointment will support the City Council and executive leadership team as the organization begins planning for the first quarter of 2026, the city said in a news release.

Breen brings more than two decades of public-sector financial and administrative leadership to the role. Since joining the City of Brentwood in 2003 after starting a career in public accounting as a Senior Auditor, Breen has held a series of key positions, including Accounting Manager (2005–2011), Assistant Director of Finance and Information Systems (2011–2016), and, since 2016, Director of Finance & Information Systems / City Treasurer.

“Kerry has been instrumental in building and sustaining Brentwood’s strong fiscal foundation,” Duffey said. “His financial expertise, collaborative leadership style, and thoughtful, data-driven approach have helped establish our reputation for long-term stability and will be critical as we set strategic priorities and align resources for 2026 and beyond.”

Over the course of a 20-year tenure with the City of Brentwood, Breen has helped shape many of the financial tools and strategies that anchor the City’s stability today. In 2007, Breen developed Brentwood’s in-house Ten-Year General Fund Fiscal Model, which has guided decision-making through the Great Recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The recruitment process for the next Assistant City Manager will be announced in the coming weeks.

Los Medanos College designated as a Blackserving institution

Los Medanos College (LMC) has earned state designation as a Black-Serving Institution, a recognition that underscores

the college’s longstanding commitment to advancing Black student success, equity, and belonging within higher education.

This designation reflects LMC’s leadership in creating programs, resources, and initiatives that empower Black students to thrive academically and personally, the school said in a news release.

LMC serves a diverse student population in which 13.5 percent identify as Black or African American. The college also has federal designations as a Minority-Serving and Hispanic-Serving institution.

Medi-Cal changes begin on Jan. 1

The state and federal government are making several changes to Medi-Cal eligibility and coverage over the next few years starting in 2026 as of Jan. 1, the state said in a press release.

Among them: • Some adults will not be able to sign up for Medi-Cal based on their immigration status.

• Adults 65 and older and people with disabilities must report their financial assets to confirm eligibility.

• As of Jan. 1, 2027, some adults will need to work or to volunteer to get or keep Medi-Cal. • Adults with children younger than 19 will be asked to renew their Medi-Cal status every six months instead of once per year.

• As of July 1, 2027, Medi-Cal members with ‘unsatisfactory immigration status’ will be required to pay a $30 monthly premium for Medi-Cal. • Children under 19 and pregnant people remain fully covered.

• Current Medi-Cal members stay enrolled but must renew on time.

• Missing a renewal ends full Medi-Cal coverage for adults affected by these changes.

• People who lose full coverage can still receive Emergency Medi-Cal if they need it.

The state does not ask patients or clients about their immigration status. Patients who have questions about whether the changes affect them should call the Employment & Human Services Service Center at 866-663-3225.

Liberty senior drifts from diamond to racetrack Madison Tuttle to race in this weekend’s Sonoma Winter Jam

Liberty softball senior third baseman Madison Tuttle is no stranger to drifting.

More often than not, she can be found in her natural habitat, drifting her way around the bases for the defending North Coast Section and CIF NorCal runner-up Lady Lions softball team. This weekend, however, she’ll be drifting in her other natural habitat: the racetrack.

Tuttle will drift race her Nissan 240SX S13 at the Sonoma Winter Jam at Sonoma Raceway to kick off her holiday break.

“It’s one of the biggest races up here,” Tuttle said.

“There’s upwards of 250 cars. It’s just a big automotive scene up there, strictly drifting too. It’s just a huge, fun event.”

Like several other student-athletes at Liberty, Tuttle balances multiple commitments alongside school. But while racing — or drifting, in her case — has been part of her life for as long as she can remember, she emphasizes that softball remains the priority.

“Softball always comes first,” Tuttle said. “Drifting is something I love, but softball is my priority — that’s always been really clear for me. This weekend is the only time I’ll put drifting over softball.”

According to Red Bull Racing, drift racing is a form of motorsport in which drivers intentionally slide their cars sideways through corners at high speeds while maintaining control of the vehicle.

“In drifting, you’re already going sideways,” Tuttle said.

“That’s your goal — trying to keep it away from the wall.”

This weekend, Tuttle and the rest of the grid will take on Sonoma Raceway’s 12-turn, 2.52-mile circuit, sliding through each corner while coming close to — but not touching — the wall.

Tuttle knows how thin that margin can be.

“I was doing tandems with this truck and I couldn’t see the wall past him,” she said. “I smacked my left rear on the wall. It brought me straight, and then my left front hit too, so it was a double whammy.”

Racing came long before softball for Tuttle. She grew up around motorsports, watching her father, Skip, race boats and her brother, Jacob, compete in sprint car racing on the dirt track at Antioch Speedway.

“I started off in these go-kart-type cars called quarter midgets,” Tuttle said. “My brother started in those, and then I got put in one at four-and-a-half. I was a little girl out there with a wheel in my hands, just going around a track.”

She was drawn to drifting after seeing it on social media.

“That’s where I first saw it, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life,’” Tuttle said. “I thought it was cooler than what my brother does, and boats weren’t really my thing.”

Her first drift ride came during a family trip to Oregon, when her father pointed out a drift event taking place near her brother’s race. That ride-along was with current Formula Drift driver Rudy Hansen.

As her softball career developed, drifting gradually took a back seat — not from a lack of interest, but because of scheduling realities.

“It never lines up right,” Tuttle said. “There’s always softball when there’s a drift event, and softball comes first.”

That discipline shows on the field. In three seasons with Liberty’s varsity softball program, Tuttle owns a career .400 batting average with 58 hits and 41 RBIs in 70 games.

Last season, she hit .338 with 14 RBIs as the Lady Lions captured an NCS title and reached the CIF NorCal final.

The patience and preparation that define Tuttle at the plate also carry over to the track. She studies film, runs courses on a simulator and records her drives using multiple GoPro cameras mounted inside the car, along with her Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

“I have cameras everywhere,” Tuttle said. “I have a GoPro on top of my car, one on the cage, and I can see my footwork. I get a lot of different angles.”

As she prepares for the final half of her senior year, Tuttle is also looking ahead to college, where she plans to major in engineering with hopes of working in aviation — a field that has long fascinated her.

“When you really think about how planes work, it’s insane,” she said. “They’re just flying so easily. That engineering is totally insane. I want to work on those — just knowing how the whole plane works, even watching the landing gears. They look so simple, but when you really see it, it’s insane.”

This weekend, however, Tuttle will stay grounded at Sonoma — going sideways on the racetrack before heading straight ahead into the rest of her senior softball season and final year of high school.

Lions enter holiday break on six-game win streak

The Liberty boys basketball team entered Tuesday’s league game against Heritage winners of the Stonebarger Tournament. For the last five days, the Lions have played on their home court, where they have outscored their opponents by 131 points in that four-game stretch. Their first win in the Stonebarger Tournament was against Mt. Diablo, 101-19.

In Tuesday’s game, the Lions led the Patriots from wire-to-wire, beating Heritage 67-33. In their opening game of the season on Nov. 25, Liberty dominated against Concord High 76-30. Coach Rich Morton said then that it was not a game in which he would be able gauge how good his team is, but he knew their potential. Nearly a month later, he sees a team that is playing to the standards he thought they could reach.

“We’re getting where I kind of expected to be,” Morton said. “I’ve seen these guys play over the summer. We beat a lot of good teams over the summer, so I know their capability, but it’s a matter of locking in. I think a lot of guys were mentally fa-

I’m confident in the guys we got and the things we can do this year.”

The things they can and want to do this year are to continue their Bay Valley Athletic League dominance. The Lions have been league champions every year since the 20212022 season, and senior captain Brendan Beresford is aware of what it means to be the team everyone is chasing.

“We’re the team to beat right now and we have to want it more. If we’re on top, we have to want it more to get a clean sweep,”

Beresford said. “They (his younger teammates) finally realize, we can win, we can go and have a great season. They’re getting hungrier every time.”

Beresford acknowledged the meshing of the new and veteran teammates in the first eight games of the season. Over that span, they’ve played more as a unit with each passing game.

“We got a lot of young guys and it just feels like the more games we play, the better we’re going to get,” Beresford said. “In practice I’ll see the younger guys picking

(it) up and following Dante (Vigil), Jaiden (Miller), they’re following our older guys. It shows out here in the game. Our bench was doing well and that’s really what we need.”

Jaiden Miller, the Lions junior point guard, had 12 points for his team on Tuesday. Miller found his moments in the game to score, primarily in the first half. But he also made sure his teammates in a lopsided victory got their share of touches, especially down the stretch. Miller was effective in bringing the team’s record to 6-2 on the season, and Morton saw Miller’s balanced offensive game as the needed approach.

“He played a solid game,” Morton said. “I think in his mind he felt his offensive power wasn’t needed that much but he still wanted to get out there and make some things happen. As long as he plays for the team, (I want him) to continue to take shots and stay in rhythm. I never not want guys to shoot it because it’s about the long-term goal. If shots are open, take them.”

The Lions will have 10 days off until they take part in the Modesto Christian Holiday Tournament on Dec. 26. Their next league game will be on Jan. 6 hosting Deer Valley at 7 p.m.

Patriots defense is stout early while young Lions continue ‘learning’ process Heritage girls basketball hands Liberty its third-straight loss, 59-31

The opening possession of Tuesday night’s girls basketball game between Heritage and Liberty hinted at a different outcome for the Lady Lions who were looking to turn things around after losing three of the last four games entering the game.

Heritage answered with a 21–0 run spanning nearly 10 minutes, leaning fully into its defensive identity. That forced turnovers both in the paint and at mid-court and seized control of the game, dominating the Lions 59-31. Elenoa Malu’s layup with just over five minutes left in the second quarter finally put Liberty back on the scoreboard at 21-5 and ended Heritage’s big run, but the tone of the night was set and the game was just about out of reach.

“Our strength is our defense,” Heritage head girls basketball coach Mark Hurtado said. “We need to be able to lock teams down. That was our advantage tonight.”

The extended scoreless stretch didn’t just swing the game — it reinforced what Heritage is becoming as league play unfolds with the Patriots improving to 5–3 overall and 2–0 in Bay Valley Athletic League play. Of Heritage’s four wins, three have come by double digits with Heritage holding

Senior Lily Wilright led Heritage with 13 points, while junior Payton Ladrido added 11. Wilright said that the win over their cross-town rival is huge for the team entering the holiday break.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster,” Wilright said. “If we can keep that intensity throughout all our games, I feel like there’s no stopping us.”

The Lady Lions dropped to 3–4 overall and 1–1 in league play, losing their third straight game after opening the season 3–1.

Junior Izhabella Valverde finished with a game-high

14 points for the Lady Lions. Interim co-head coach Mike Gregory stepped into the role just days before the opener after the late-November departure of head coach Matt Malzahn, inheriting a roster that’s been forced to adjust on the fly.

“It’s still learning with the team, and the ladies to understand what we’re trying to accomplish,” Gregory said. “Understanding the basics of knowing the game of basketball.”

The struggles have shown up in the scoring margins. Of Liberty’s four losses this season, three have come by double digits, often fueled by turnovers and missed opportunities.

However, Gregory says that the early struggles are part of the Lady Lions’ process so far as they still aim to compete for a league title this season.

“We take it game by game,” he said. “This is a journey.

One game doesn’t make you.”

Despite the losses, Gregory said the locker room remains constructive and positive as the Lady Lions head into their final two games before the holiday break.

“Everybody’s really positive,” he said. “Everybody’s up, and we’re still early in the season. They’re buying into what we’re doing.”

That patience and aim for growth contrast Heritage’s growing confidence, where the focus has shifted from finding answers to reinforcing identity.

“We’re a standalone team,”. Wilright said. “We want teams when they hear ‘Heritage’ to be ready to come out and play.”

Both teams will take part in next weekend’s West Coast Jamboree, although the Lady Lions will play in back-to-back games this weekend, hosting Edison on Friday before taking on Granada in the Garrison Invitational at Moreau Catholic in Hayward on Saturday at 2 p.m.

NOTICE INVITING BIDS 1. Bid Submission. The City of Brentwood (“City”) will accept sealed bids for its Municipal Services Center Pavement Rehab Project (“Project”), by or before Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at its City Clerk’s office, located at City Hall, third floor, 150 City Park Way, Brentwood, California 94513, at which time the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud in the Council Chambers. On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the Council Chambers will be open from 1:30 p.m. to exactly 2:00 p.m. to accept bids in person.

Bids that are hand delivered must be handed directly to the City employee staffing the City Hall third floor window. If the window is not staffed, you must contact the City Clerk by dialing 5440, using the phone at the third floor window, and hand deliver it to the City employee answering the door.

2. Project Information.

2.1 Location and Description. The Project is located at the City of Brentwood Public Works Municipal Services Center located at 2201 Elkins Way, Brentwood, CA 94513 and is described as follows: The work to be done consists of resurfacing various pavement by grind and overlay and dig out; replacing traffic striping, legends, and markers; lowering and adjusting existing utilities to finish grade; and all other work necessary to construct the project complete and in satisfactory condition, all as shown on the Contract Documents and/ or as specified herein.

2.2 Time for Final Completion. The Project must be fully completed within 25 calendar days from the start date set forth in the Notice to Proceed. City anticipates that the Work will begin on or about March 2, 2026, but the anticipated start date is provided solely for convenience and is neither certain nor binding.

2.3 Estimated Cost. The estimated construction cost is $440,000.

3. License and Registration Requirements.

3.1 License. This Project requires a valid California contractor’s license for the following classification(s): Class “A”.

3.2 DIR Registration. City may not accept a Bid Proposal from or enter into the Contract with a bidder, without proof that the bidder is registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) to perform public work pursuant to Labor Code § 1725.5, subject to limited legal exceptions.

4. Contract Documents. The plans, specifications, bid forms and contract documents for the Project, and any addenda thereto (“Contract Documents”) may be downloaded from City’s website located at: http://www. brentwoodca.gov/projects-bids-rfps.

5. Bid Security. The Bid Proposal must be accompanied by bid security of ten percent of the maximum bid amount, in the form of a cashier’s or certified check made payable to City, or a bid bond executed by a surety licensed to do business in the State of California on the Bid Bond form included with the Contract Documents. Welcome back.

Well, we are in the holiday season, and I was thinking “why not do a review on a Christmas jazz album.” So, I started going through my collection and looked at what would be the most familiar jazz albums one would tend to Explorations in recognize. We would consider those by Nat azz “King” Cole, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Mel Torme, Jimmy Smith, Vince Guaraldi, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, and Frank Sinatra. These artists Ted are what in the jazz Turner world are considered to have released the best albums.

Upon further reflection, I dug a little further and the album that I am going to review is the best album in this genre. It is by pianist, composer, arranger, and chief A&R (Artists & Repertoire) man for Blue Note Records.

Duke Pearson is credited with shaping the sound of Blue Note during the bulk of the ‘60s, which till this day allows Blue Note to be one of the truly great jazz labels.

Pearson’s career in jazz spanned over 50 years, but he recorded only seven albums as a leader. All were with Blue Note Records.

Pearson was known as one of the best arrangers in jazz and played as a sideman on many albums. His first album as a leader was recorded on Blue Note and titled “Wahoo!,” and the album we are reviewing “Merry Ole Soul” was his last.

This album, like all the Blue Note albums of the ‘60s, was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studios. He is joined on this album by Bob Cranshaw (bass) who was playing with Sonny Rollins at the time, Mickey Roker (drums), and Airto Moreira (percussion) who was an upcoming musician from Brazil and who would gain fame as a member of the Chick Corea band Return To Forever.

So, let’s get into this fantastic album.

What I will attempt to do is to break this album down track by track.

1. Sleigh Ride: This is one of the coolest takes of the song I have ever heard.

It gives off a spiritual jazz feel with the bass being played in a drone-like manner and the drums swinging in such a manner it wakes you up. One of the really interesting components of the introduction of this tune is that Pearson switches between piano and an instrument that is used mainly by large orchestras called a ‘celeste,’ which is played like a piano, but you hit bells instead of strings. By incorporating this instrument, it adds a magical feel and tone to the tune, and you feel like you are actually gliding along in a sleigh.

As the song moves on, it goes into a more conventional bebop pattern. Also, if you listen carefully to the closing bars in this track for a little bit of humor, he plays some bars from the song, and there’s a party at the home of “Farmer Gray.”

2. The Little Drummer Boy: On this

J

track, the music starts at a very fast pace, with Pearson playing the piano as if his hands are on fire, Roker answers the pace with his remarkable speed on the drums.

Here, he gives a big marching-band style introduction and plays across the whole drum set as the bass and lower chords of the piano keep the beat going.

As they progress back into the main melody, Cranshaw gets to show his skills, cuts loose and plays up and down the bass octaves but still returning to the main beat at the end of each verse. Roker closes out the tune with an all-out attack on the drums, and a splashy hit on the cymbals, followed by a definitive drum roll.

3. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas: This is more of a straight playing of the tune, but you still pick up a blues element in Pearson’s playing. The only noticeable change on this tune is that Pearson uses the “celeste” at the end, which shows how imaginative Pearson is as an arranger.

4. Jingle Bells: This is a totally freestyle interpretation of this tune due to the Latin percussion work of Moreira, the Brazilian percussionist. He does things with the various instruments on this track that are just fantastic, and you get an image of Frosty just dancing to the Latin groove and having a good time.

5. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: Again, we have Airto doing his instrumental thing at breakneck speed, but he’s rightly joined by Roker on drums. This turns this song into a Samba Party. Pearson and Cranshaw join in on the tune and then you really begin to realize that Santa has never samba’d so hard.

6. Go Tell It On The Mountain: Here Pearson and Company take a serious turn, as they cover this non-secular tune. This is an African-American spiritual that was first collected in ‘Religious Folk Songs of the Negro as Sung on the plantations’, compiled

by Thomas P. Fenner, the first director of music at Hampton University. This song is fitting because it brings the spirit of the church to this album.

7. Wassail Song: Pearson and Cranshaw have an extended improvisation on this tune. They play it in the lower octaves, thus bringing attention to the main lyrics of the tune “Here we come a Wassailing.”

8. Silent Night: It’s back to the sound world of Go Tell It On The Mountain, a non-secular tune played in the original gospel style.

9. O Little Town Of Bethlehem: It’s played as straight as it can be. This is a piano solo, with no blues edges. This playing reminds you as if it were being played in church. It brings a quiet note to end a set of music that has gone in every possible direction.

How would I rate the album by Pearson in relationship to other jazz Christmas albums. It is positively the best!

County prepares for Medi-Cal coverage loss, less money Contra Costa County is preparing for significant reductions in Medi-Cal coverage and hundreds of millions of dollars in long-term funding loss as a result of recent federal and state policy changes, county officials said last week.

New federal requirements under H.R. 1, the so-called “big beautiful bill,” combined with state Medi-Cal eligibility and reimbursement changes, will make it harder for many residents to enroll in or keep healthcare coverage. While final details are still emerging, county estimates indicate that as many as 93,000 Contra Costa residents

could be affected by 2029, according to a press release from the county.

At the same time, Contra Costa Health (CCH) projects more than $300 million in cumulative state and federal funding reductions through 2029, driven by Medi-Cal disenrollment and cuts to supplemental funding that public hospitals rely upon.

These impacts are expected to grow year over year and reflect a broader trend affecting counties and public health systems across California.

“These changes mean fewer people covered and fewer dollars coming into the system at the

same time,” said Candace Andersen, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors. “Our responsibility is to face that reality head-on, plan carefully, and ensure the county continues to provide essential care for residents who have nowhere else to turn.”

During a presentation to the Board on Tuesday, leaders of CCH and the county’s Employment & Human Services Department emphasized that the projected impacts are a result of external policy decisions, not local performance, and that significant uncertainty remains around timeline’s, enforcement and the response from California.

Federal guidance on several provisions of H.R. 1 has not yet been issued, and California’s approach to reducing coverage losses is still evolving.

The rally was the latest in a series of AEA rallies around Antioch, including at school sites, in which the union protested the district’s perceived refusal to ratify a new contract with the benefits they believe they need. The intent of the rally was to put pressure on the school board members, who were to arrive at the district office for a meeting that evening, with marches, slogans, signs, and songs, sung and chanted right outside the meeting room to ensure that board members could hear the teachers’ voices.

“The board members are the boss of the superintendent,” AEA President Bob Carson said at the rally. “They are her boss. They can tell her to make a contract with us, and we need to tell that to them as they’re walking in tonight.”

According to Carson, the dispute between the union and the district began when the AEA’s previous contract with the district expired on July 1. This contract featured “fully paid medical benefits

for all employees, along with dental and vision,” which AEA members expected would be in their next contract. Instead, the district offered one year of fully paid benefits and two additional years only if funding was available, something that would be decided by the district alone.

Carson said that “for AEA, that’s a oneyear deal.”

He explained that since many East Bay districts offer benefits with no expiration date, he was worried that the district’s

decision would make it more difficult for Antioch schools to retain quality teachers.

“We believe that Antioch students deserve the very best educators, but we must have long-term security with our benefits to achieve that,” Carson said.

In addition to the issues surrounding benefits, the district has not raised wages to match the 2.3 percent cost-of-living adjustment that they received from the state, instead offering a 1 percent bonus followed by three years of no salary increases, ac-

cording to Carson. He called the offer “completely unacceptable,” due to a lack of future cost-of-living adjustments.

Carson also said that the district’s budgeting priorities “are all wrong;” according to his reading of the school district’s September budget, the district has more money than they claim to have, “While claiming to not have money (the district had an over $20 million rollover of existing funds), AUSD is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on consultants (for example, $200,000 for a ‘culture and climate’ survey) and other pet projects,” he explained. “In total, between these projects and a staggering increase in ‘legal services’, it’s into the millions.”

Carson said that this is partly due to the district underbudgeting their income by $30 million to $50 million each year for the past five years.

“When they tell us again they’re on this fiscal cliff, we think it’s bad budgeting, and history proves that to be correct,” he said.

The school district has not responded to a request for comment.

Lazy Dog from page 1A consider a new restaurant in Brentwood – or anywhere else in the state – in the future. He characterized the city’s work on the now-defunct project as feverish as staff worked to accommodate the developer’s plans for a fiveacre plot of land on Sand Creek Road across the street from the Streets of Brentwood shopping center.

Lazy Dog is a chain of casual sit-down restaurants with a Rocky Mountain-inspired aesthetic, according to staff reports from when the project was originally discussed. The restaurant’s website describes its menu as comfort food, such as hamburgers, and pasta. It features indoor dining as well as outdoor patio dining. As the name suggests, the restaurants include dog-friendly outdoor dining areas in addition to indoor dining options.

The closest location is in Concord.

Lazy Dog Restaurant had expressed interest in coming to Brentwood for several years. In August of 2023, the Planning Commission unanimously approved the project, albeit with some proposed changes to the restaurant’s facade to make it fit better with Brentwood’s design standards. The developer backed out then, citing the restaurant’s look as a key part of its identity.

The City Council got the project back on track in September of 2023 after it unanimously approved its design without the Planning Commission’s proposed changes to the tower-like design element.

granted a one-year extension on construction to the developer, LRG Investors, after another one of their projects fell through. That project had been an extended-stay hotel.

“Lazy Dog requires the hotel to be on a similar construction schedule as to avoid operation conflicts,” according to a document submitted by the developer at the time.

“We have now found another hotel operator and will soon be making planning submittals, putting both projects on schedule to commence construction mid-2025.”

At the time, the developer assured the city they were “very committed” to bringing a Lazy Dog Restaurant to Brentwood. It is unclear what project may be developed

on the five-acre parcel in the future but, according to Noguera, the land is available for other potential projects as a result of Lazy Dog backing out of building a new location.

“It is an attractive five-plus acre site and lends itself to attracting other reputable restaurants and shops to Brentwood, especially with the success of Streets of Brentwood and new additions at the neighboring Sand Creek Crossings,” he said.

How to keep your dog calm during New Year’s fireworks ISAAC ARRIAGA

ew Year’s is just around the corner, which means fireworks will soon begin

popping off at night in the lead-up to the end of the year.

That’s bad news for your furry friend who is not as fond of the loud bangs as many people are. To keep your dog calm and prevent them from running away, local experts offered a few tips to help them out before the celebrations begin.

Veterinary Director of Brentwood Veterinary Hospital Dr. Megan Beaumont says dogs can have a negative reaction to fireworks for a number of reasons. “It’s a loud noise and they just don’t know the source of the noise. That’s pretty scary, it’s a little bit unusual for their regular day-to-day life… Plus their hearing is a lot more sensitive than ours.”

The loud bangs of New Year’s fireworks can cause a dog to react in a number of different ways.

Beaumont said the most common signs that a dog is afraid of the loud fireworks are “shaking, shivering, panting, pacing, some dogs get very destructive and try to escape.

She also mentioned that a dog may hide and cower as well during a fireworks show.

To calm a dog down during a fireworks display, Beaumont suggested giving your pet a space that they can feel safe in whether that’s their favorite room or in their crate. The booms of fireworks can be muffled by white noise or the sounds of a television, so you

There’s also apparel, such as thunder shirts and ear muffs, along with over-thecounter supplements, like zylkene and soloquin, and pheromones, such as Adaptil, that help relieve a dog of anxiety. One way Beaumont suggested could make a dog more comfortable during future fireworks displays is through making the experience a fun one despite the noise. “Playing games, using puzzle toys, giving (your pet) their absolute favorite treat, making them try and associate those times with a fun, positive thing will make them a lot less scared and fearful,” she said.

Beaumont also recommended a behaviorist for your dog who could build their confidence and create ways to manage situations that are scary for the dog. This method requires time and attention, so it could be done to prepare for next year or future celebrations where fireworks are prominent.

She also said that a veterinarian can help prescribe anti-anxiety medication that could help your pet tolerate the celebrations. It is best to reach out to a veterinarian about a week before New Year’s so that if the medication requires a higher dose to be effective, the correct dose can be provided prior to the big New Year’s celebrations.

While you’re at the veterinarian’s office, make sure your dog is up to date on their vaccines, she said. Beaumont warned of the potential dangers that could occur if a dog that is behind on vaccinations should escape. “If you think about your pet, they’ve escaped, they’re in a new situation, there’s big loud scary noises,” she said. “Even the sweetest dogs can become very terrified and they go into that, fight or flight, response. The last thing we want to have happen is for your dog to get terrified, bite someone, and then for there to be a concern about rabies.”

Public Information Officer of the Contra Costa Animal Services Department Steve Burdo advised concerned pet owners to have their pet microchipped, which allows animal services to identify the owners of a lost pet.

However, microchips do not track dogs.

For that, he suggested Air Tags that can be placed on a dog’s collar and will enable you to see where your dog has run off to through an app on your phone. Burdo also spoke about the advantage of having a dog licensed. “Licensing would allow us to know that the dog has been immunized for rabies and we can hold them longer before putting them up for adoption.”

Incidents of dogs escaping from their homes and getting picked up by animal services are lower on average in December than they are during non-holiday months, according to the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department.

Data from the past three years also shows that only four stray dogs a year from 2022 to 2024 were impounded from Oakley and Brentwood.

Burdo said New Year’s Day is not a common day for stray dogs to get picked up. “We tend to see more strays on July 4 due to the fireworks than we do around New Year’s.”

ustin and Alexa Ojala didn’t set out to open a typical veterinary clinic. They

wanted something different for their practice — a space that felt calm, welcoming and personal. When they stepped onto the quiet marina deck overlooking the Oakley waterfront, just minutes after spotting the listing online, they knew they had found it.

At their location at 98 Big Break Road, perched and looking out toward where Big Break meets the San Joaquin River, they saw something ‘most clinics don’t offer’: peace, space and an environment designed to put both pets and people at ease.

“Some of the clinics I’ve managed before were in a strip mall or right off a busy street,” veterinarian Austin Ojala said.

“Here, you can sit on the deck, look out over the Delta and just breathe. If a family has to say goodbye to their pet, there’s nothing more peaceful than sitting outside with them at that moment.”

How to plan for your pets’ care should you die…

For many seniors, pets provide companionship, emotional comfort, and a sense of purpose. Yet the worry of who will care for a beloved animal if the owner becomes unable to do so is common. Because pets cannot communicate their needs or manage their own welfare, planning ahead is essential.

Without a plan, pets may face abandonment, inconsistent care, or placement in a shelter. A pet trust offers a reliable solution by ensuring a pet’s future care is legally protected.

A pet trust is a legally enforceable arrangement that sets aside funds for a pet’s ongoing needs while appointing both a caregiver to look after the pet and a trustee to manage the designated funds. Unlike informal promises made to friends or family, a pet trust creates a binding obligation, guaranteeing that the owner’s instructions will be followed.

Pet trusts provide several key benefits.

First, they guarantee that a specific person will care for the pet, following the owner’s detailed instructions for diet, exercise, grooming, medical care, and overall well-being. Second, the trust supplies financial support for the pet’s expenses, reducing the burden on the caregiver and ensuring consistent care. Third, the owner maintains control over important decisions by choosing the caregiver, outlining expectations, and requiring the trustee to monitor the caregiver’s performance. Finally, because the arrangement is legally enforceable, the trustee has authority to intervene if the caregiver fails to meet their responsibilities.

Setting up a pet trust involves several steps. The owner must first select a responsible

caregiver and confirm that the person is willing to take on the commitment. Naming an alternate caregiver is also wise in case circumstances change. Next, the owner appoints a trustee — someone trustworthy, organized, and financially responsible — to manage the funds. While the caregiver and trustee can be the same person, separating the roles adds accountability.

The owner then determines how much money to place in the trust by estimating the pet’s lifetime costs, including food, veterinary care, grooming, and any special needs. Clear instructions should be drafted to describe the expected level of care, preferred routines, medical guidelines, and even endof-life decisions. These details help ensure the pet continues to receive familiar and compassionate care.

Finally, it is important to work with an attorney experienced in estate planning to draft the trust in accordance with California law and ensure the owner’s wishes are accurately reflected.

In short, a pet trust offers peace of mind by guaranteeing that a cherished companion will be cared for with the same love and attention even if the owner can no longer provide it. With proper planning and legal guidance, pet owners can create a secure future for their animals and tailor the arrangement to their unique needs.

osting parties for the holidays can be stressful for pets. Knowing whether to

lock the pet away, leaving them left to roam the house or allowing the pet to decide for themselves if they want to meet your guests depends on how well you know your pet and guests.

Michele Kuslits, president of Antioch Friends of Animal Services, a support group for Antioch Animal Services said if the pet or guests are uncomfortable, the

pet being secured in a room or kennel during the time with supervised bathroom breaks is encouraged.

“Dogs can sense when a human is uncomfortable and that is when accidents can happen,” she said. “I have a small dog who is uncomfortable around strangers, so he happily goes into his crate when we have company. It makes for a less stressful visit for pets, guests and pet owners.”

Kuslits added that the owner knows their pet best. “If your pet is comfortable in social situations in your home amongst large crowds and all of your guests are comfortable, everything should be fine.”

She noted a few tips to keep in mind: ♦ It is your responsibility to ensure your pet’s well-being, recognizing signs of stress in your pet, along with the safety of your pet and your guests. ♦ Be aware of the risk that your pets could possibly escape with folks entering and exiting the home. ♦ Ensure your pets are wearing ID tags in this situation, too. For the pets with car sickness, then Cerenia (Maropitant) would be a good option. With that said, every patient is different, and these medications may not be a good fit. Consult with a veterinarian prior to administration of any medication.

Kuslits noted that if boarding your pet, the same practices, except for the crate, apply.

“They will be in a secure kennel at the facility and be sure you have a signed form for emergency vet care and the boarding facility has contact info for your regular veterinarian,” she added.

Tips for leaving your pet at home with a pet sitter include ensuring they have ID Tags on and are microchipped with current information, the pet sitter has a current photo of your pet(s) and is familiar with their dietary needs any medication schedules, and the pet sitter has a signed form for emergency veterinary care and contact information for a regular veterinarian.

“Sticking to your pet’s normal routine is best, to ensure they are happy while you are gone,” Kuslits said.

Antioch Animal Services Manager Catriona Cottle said “there are a few options for a pet’s personality, health, and of course how deep your pockets are.”

“For social dogs who enjoy other dog company and people, boarding is definitely advisable and a quick and easy solution if you are pressed for time in finding someone,” Cottle said.

She advised that this option could be costly if the pet owner has multiple dogs.

“Bringing your pet with you depends on

what the plans are – a ski trip may mean leaving your dog unsupervised in a hotel room all day, when staying at home could be less stressful,” she said. “A pet sitter is an easy go-to for the smaller pets such as cats, rabbits or birds that can’t go with you nor have a boarding option and inclusive of the dogs staying at home is often less stressful overall for any pet.”

Cottle said some of the best practices are to ensure your pet is comfortable with traveling, boarding and or a pet sitter before committing to these choices with zero familarity.
