Teacher of the Year honored The Oakley Union Elementary School District (OUESD) has announced fourthgrade teacher Paige Colburn as Gehringer Elementary School and OUESD Teacher of the Year. Colburn has been teaching in Oakley for four years. She grew up in the area and attended Liberty Union High School District, where she was part of the Teaching and Learning Academy. Colburn completed her student teaching at Gehringer Elementary School and quickly stood out as an outstanding young educator. She was then hired and assigned to Gehringer, where she has been teaching third and fourth grades. Colburn also has had the opportunity to loop students from one grade to the next. Around campus, Colburn’s name is synonymous with technology. She was in the first tech academy and received Chromebooks for her students early in the year. Colburn has championed technology for her site and our see Teacher page 26A

“ We are talking about more than line items

The Brentwood City Council has answered the fire district’s call for additional funds to keep its fourth station open. This week, the council directed City Manager Gus Vina to present to the fire district board two options for keeping the district’s fourth station open for three years. “We have to do something,” said Mayor Bob Taylor. “We have to face the issue.” The first option calls for the fire board, along with the cities of Brentwood and Oakley and the county, to continue to band together to keep the fourth station open, as has been done since July 2016. The second option calls for the city of Brentwood to enter into an exclusive three-year memorandum of understanding

on a spreadsheet; we are talking about lives.

Joel Bryant, president, fire board to close the Knightsen station in favor of opening a second in Brentwood. Since mid-2016, the district’s fourth station, in Knightsen, has been funded with a combined $2.2 million from the district, cities of Brentwood and Oakley and the county. However, it is slated to close in June if additional funds aren’t found. “We are talking about more than line items on a spreadsheet; we are talking about lives,” said Brentwood City Councilman Joel Bryant, president of the fire board. “Each one of these calls (the fire district) is responding to is a potential, life-threatening

situation.” If the multijurisdictional approach is approved, it’s expected the district would pay $4.2 million over three years, with Brentwood contributing $1.5 million, Oakley $946,000 and the county $600,000 to keep the Knightsen station open. The contributions were determined based on call volumes and population in the respective areas. If Brentwood marches forward alone, the Knightsen station would close and a second Brentwood station would open. In this case, Brentwood would pay $3 million over three years, with the remaining $4.2 million

funded by the fire district. Brentwood officials have twice met privately with officials from Oakley, the county and the district. The fire board is slated to hear the proposal at a meeting on April 3, while the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors and the Oakley City Council will discuss the multijurisdictional option no later than April 18. Brentwood Vice Mayor Steve Barr and Councilmember Karen Rarey, both members of a subcommittee launched earlier this year to address the shortage of fire and medical emergency services, said they hope the City of Oakley and the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors agree to the multijurisdictional option – but early indications are that they won’t. Rarey said officials from both the county and the City of see Fire page 26A
