Driving Into Spring
Bringing on spring
by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
Social-media commentary on homelessness – some of it positive and compassionate, some of it not – caught the attention of longtime Oakely resident Dan Diedrickson and prompted him to become part of the solution instead of part of the problem. “There’s a million reasons why somebody could become homeless. And my personal belief is we have a responsibility to help each other,” said Diedrickson. “If you have something that you perceive to be an issue, it’s kind of incumbent upon you to do something about it as opposed to just talking about. There are some very immediate needs that are not being met for a lot of folks.”

herry blossoms on the trees and wild mustard plants signal the arrival of spring in East County. Warmer temperatures are helping prepare the first of the area’s fruit offerings – cherries. The official start of the popular U-pick season begins in a few weeks. To view more photos, visit www. thepress.net/multimedia/sideshows

Going green at O’Hara Park by Aly Brown Staff Writer
O’Hara Park Middle School now has a new greenhouse on campus, thanks to the efforts of an Eagle Scout candidate. Adam Siri of Antioch Troop 450 was inspired to construct a greenhouse in part of his Eagle Scout project after working on a similar structure at Deer Valley High School for another Scout’s project. While working, Adam said Melissa Mastrangelo and Shauna Cramer – O’Hara instructional aide and teacher, respectively – approached his scoutmaster,
Matt Dunn. “Melissa said, ‘If you guys have any other Scouts interested in doing this (at O’Hara), contact me,’” Adam said. While still a freshman at Dozier-Libbey Medical High School, the aspiring nurse practitioner has his sights set on attaining Eagle rank and sought to begin his own project. Meeting Mastrangelo helped solidify those plans. Shortly after, he had his troop on campus, laying the groundwork to construct a 12-by-16-foot greenhouse.
