Staff Writer Police have identified two people arrested after they allegedly attempted to rob a Brentwood salon at knifepoint Tuesday, prompting the brief lock-down of nearby schools. Lt. Tom Hansen said 19-year-old Adam Pierce and 50-year-old Heather Pierce of Brentwood, a son and mother, will face charges of robbery, burglary, false imprisonment, conspiracy and possibly others. The incident, which took place at Posh Salon in the 8600 block of Brentwood Boulevard, caused police to lock down nearby Garin Elementary and Edna Hill Middle schools for less than an hour until police were certain all suspects had been arrested. According to Hansen, officers responded to a call at about 2 p.m. reporting that two masked and knife-wielding individuals were attempting to rob the salon. Officers from two shifts were on hand for training at the police station, located about a quarter-mile away. The resulting overwhelming response included SWAT Team members armed with assault rifles, at least eight BPD cars, and officers from the California Highway Patrol and Antioch Police who happened to be in the area. Christmas Basket Buchanan to fight sign-ups Monday against water bond The Brentwood Regional Community Chest will expand the number of families in its Christmas Basket program this year, and sign-ups take place next Monday. “Thanks in no small part to the fundraising efforts of Mayor Bob ‘McTurkey’ Taylor, the Brentwood Community Chest has been able to secure funding and commitments to increase the number of food and gift baskets for the 2009 holiday season,” said BRCC co-president Kevin King. “To ensure we are able to assist as many families as possible, we will be re-opening the registration sign-ups to accommodate the

first additional 75 requests on Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon.” Sign-ups will be held at the new Brentwood Senior Center, located at the corner of Balfour Road and Griffith Lane. The BRCC baskets include fresh and non-perishable food, a turkey and an age-appropriate gift for each child 17 or younger. Applicants should bring proof of birth for each child along with proof of residence (driver’s license, tax bill or utility bill) in Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron or Knightsen. HO! HO! HO!

by Dave Roberts Staff Writer Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan will be actively campaigning to defeat the $11.1 billion water bond that will appear on the November, 2010 state ballot because less than half of the money will go for water storage and restoration of the Delta. The bond started out at $9.4 billion when first considered by state legislators on a Friday night. Of that total, $2.5 billion was targeted for Delta restoration and $3 billion would provide additional water storage to help supply California’s population as it increases to 50 million. “But when we went from Friday to when we finally passed (the

bill, the bond) grew to $11.1 billion. When it grew, they took out $250 million for the Delta,” said Buchanan at a town meeting at the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce this week. “So if this is about protecting the Delta and making the state less reliable on the Delta, the bond certainly didn’t do that. It was a disgrace.” While Delta restoration money was being cut from the bond, a variety of pork-laden projects were added, including $10 million for the California Unity Center in Sacramento to teach student tolerance, which was inserted by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, who represents Sacramento.
