This Week Poisoned trees succumb to saws Taking up
the challenge
by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer
Brentwood maintenance crews removed six dead sycamores along Balfour Road this week, nearly five months after unknown vandals poisoned the decades-old trees. And while those behind the crime might have won the battle, city officials insist they haven’t won the war. “We’re not giving into the vandals; we’re not letting them win. We’re replanting,” said Roger Stromgren, parks maintenance manager for the City of Brentwood. “It’s a shame that one warped individual could do such damage. It’s just a shame.” The 20-year-old trees, located along Balfour Road near Claremont Drive, were found to have been poisoned in May following a routine inspection by the parks department. One-inch holes had been drilled into four trees, and subsequent lab

Workers remove the last of six trees killed by vandals along Balfour Road. Four were directly poisoned, and the toxin spread through roots to two others. tests revealed they had been filled with a poison similar to the chemicals found in the over-the-counter weed-killer Roundup. But because the

Eight apply for cemetery board seat by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer
Eight candidates have applied for a seat on the Byron-BrentwoodKnightsen Cemetery Board, a usually inconspicuous position that has become a political football. The cemetery board application process was reopened last month when it was discovered the position had not been properly advertised by the office of the clerk of the Board of Supervisors. By the time the filing period ended this week, eight candidates had applied for the position: Patrick McHenry, D. Bailey Neff, Robin Pastor, David Piepho, John Quinn, Vickey Rinehart, Johnny Staton and Martin Young. Brentwood Mayor Bob

Taylor had applied for the seat but withdrew after discovering there would be a conflict of interest between the cemetery board and his city seat. The controversy over the empty cemetery board seat began last month when David Piepho, husband of Supervisor Mary Piepho, applied for the seat along with Brentwood resident Quinn. Piepho currently serves on the county’s powerful Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO), which oversees land boundaries and annexation issues. Piepho also sits on the Discovery Bay Community Services District Board, but is not seeking re-election this year. An see Cemetery page 22A
