YOUR HOMETOWN WEEKLY NEWSPAPER

It’s Barr and Bryant in Brentwood by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer

Brentwood voters Tuesday tabbed a pair of newcomers for seats at the City Council dais, as Steve Barr and Joel Bryant topped a field of six candidates. Barr, a local businessman and member of the Liberty Union High School Board of Trustees, was the top vote-getter with 5,160 (26.1 percent), while Bryant received 5,097 (25.8 percent). Incumbent Chris Becnel finished third with 4,226 (21.3 percent). “I think voters recognized me for my work in the community and on the school board,” said Barr, who talked to thousands of voters in two months of door-to-door campaigning. “I think it made an impression on them that I was taking the time to hear their concerns … I’m happy. I feel great.” Bryant, a pastor and chaplain with the Brentwood Police Department, wasn’t sure what

to feel Wednesday morning. “It’s a whirlwind,” he said. Finishing second in a field packed with “quality, background and experience” has left him “very humbled and amazed. What a privilege.” Bryant thinks he might have benefited from overall voter frustration that swept incumbents out of office in races all across the country. “People wanted change, and that happened here, too,” he said. “Knowing I’m conservative, perhaps they felt I would handle their money conservatively, too.” Bryant said his first order of business would be to get even more plugged in with his new constituency and “let them tell me what they want done. If you don’t understand how you got there, you can’t know how to go forward.” Barr said he’s looking forward to getting more details on the various issues currently facing the council when see Brentwood page 22A
