Wright elected Antioch mayor by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The Antioch City Council will be changing, as voters appeared to have elected Sean Wright as the Mayor, alongside newcomer Lamar Thorpe and incumbent councilmember Monica Wilson. Wright garnered 34.66 percent of the vote, 208 votes more than second-place Mayor Wade Harper’s 33.69 percent. “Everybody is telling me it will probably hold up, but I am not going to run around celebrating until I know,” said Wright. Thorpe, a university administrator, was the top vote getter in the council race, with 25.97 percent of the vote. Wilson, who was first elected in 2012, nabbed second with 23.28 percent of the vote, followed by longtime incumbent Mary Ro-
cha with 21.11 percent. “I couldn’t be more excited and appreciative that the community trusts me to serve them,” Thorpe said. Wilson could not be reached as of press time. Wright, a chiropractor and CEO of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, describes himself as a leader who listens, collaborates, communicates and unifies behind a common vision. He plans to explore the use of Measure C funds, which he believes are being misspent. The measure, approved by voters in 2013, was meant to reduce crime and gang activities, increase police staffing and improve 911 emergency-response times. Thorpe said he’s looking forward to increasing the accountability and transparency see Mayor page 26A
