Antioch will hold the grand opening of its newest boat launch, at the Antioch Marina, on Saturday, April 7.

After years of waiting and a little uncertainty, Antioch is ready to present its newest boat launch to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility will be held Saturday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the foot of L Street, accompanied by much fanfare, including a show by Delta Jet Ski Action and jet ski racing all day. According to Deputy Director of Community Development Ryan Graham, attendees are welcome to speak with the jet ski racers in the pits and learn more about the sport. A freestyle competition team will also be performing throughout the day. The opening is expected to attract a host of local dignitaries. City officials are pleased

that residents will soon be able to enjoy another avenue to the San Joaquin River. “I’m very excited,” Graham said. “It’s been a long time coming that we have a nice new facility that is large enough to hopefully provide for the entire city.” While the boat ramp will not be open to the public on Saturday, it will be available for use starting Sunday. Graham also noted that this is only the first major completed phase of the boat launch’s construction. The city also plans to add restrooms and a third boat dock later on. The new ramp cost roughly $4.3 million, but was paid for largely by grants from the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Progress continues on Highway 4 by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer

While contractors expand Highway 4 in Pittsburg and Antioch, local transportation officials received good news about clearing up a traffic problem along the thoroughfare in Brentwood. Most of the visible progress on Highway 4 is taking place in Pittsburg and Antioch, where drivers are taking advantage of the new lanes. Eventually, all of Highway 4 from Pittsburg through Brentwood will be widened to four lanes in each direction. Three of the five planned projects administered by Caltrans and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority are

underway: the freeway segments from Loveridge Road in Pittsburg to Somersville Road in Antioch, from Somersville to L Street/Contra Loma Boulevard and from Contra Loma to Lone Tree Way. Highway 4 spokeswoman Anna Reiss said the projects are running smoothly and reporting no major delays so far. “I think we’re pretty well on schedule,” Reiss said. “Nothing out of the ordinary for a construction project.” According to widensr4. org, the main information hub for the project, the Loveridge segment will wrap up by the end of 2013. Contractors are now working on the overpass along the Loveridge Road exit, see Highway 4 page 22A

A low bid has been announced for a contractor to start working on the Sand Creek Road/State Route 4 intersection, turning it into a freeway exit much like those at Lone Tree Way and Laurel Road.
