“set about it more slowly, almost stupidly. Forcing yourself to write down what is of no interest, what is most obvious, most common, most colourless.’

Transformations
Observations
In this second project we delve deeper into the problems posed by these hidden barriers by proposing a series of Transformations where we intervene to change these hidden barriers and begin to address some of these issues. By creating these Transformations we hope to achieve two things:
• To create new connections or improve existing connections where there are currently barriers or disconnections
This introductory project is taken by all students in the Hidden Barriers superstudio and will introduce you to the themes, working practices, and methodologies of the Hidden Barriers superstudio. The Survey project focuses on a case study from the Hidden Barriers research unit: the Short Strand neighbourhood of East Belfast. Students will be introduced to Short Strand and its history. Through research and discussion, we will try to understand the reasons why Hidden Barriers wereimplemented in Belfast. Through exploration and observation of two contrasting case studies, the Short Strand and Ligoniel areas, we will use photographs, videos and drawings to document, catalogue, and analyse the different ways that buildings, spaces, and objects are used to these barriers. We will then bring all this information together to produce our Surveys.
• To raise much greater awareness of the social, eco -nomic, political, and environmental effects caused by these hidden barriers In contrast to Project 1 which placed a focus on the core architectural skills of observation and communication, Project 2 shifts focus to now focus on core technical knowledge of structure, materials, and methods of assembly.
