Vorwort Die Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy verfolgt die Absicht, sämtliche erreichbaren Kompositionen, Briefe und Schriften sowie alle anderen Dokumente seines künstlerischen Schaffens in wissenschaftlich angemessener Form der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Als historischkritische Ausgabe will sie der Forschung und der musikalischen Praxis gleichermaßen dienen.

Im Vordergrund stehen die musikalischen Werke; von ihnen sind nicht nur die vollendeten Kompositionen in all ihren Fassungen, sondern auch die Quellen des Entstehungsprozesses (Skizzen und Entwürfe) ebenso wie die unfertigen Kompositionen (Fragmente) vorzulegen. Daneben ist die von Mendelssohn geführte Korrespondenz außerordentlich wichtig. Die Erkenntnis, dass die zuverlässige Edition der Briefe für die wissenschaftliche Erschließung eines kompositorischen Œuvres unabdingbar ist, gilt allgemein; bei Mendelssohn indes gewinnt die Korrespondenz, die den Komponisten als Zeitzeugen er­sten Ranges ausweist, durch den hohen literarischen Wert vieler seiner Briefe besondere Bedeutung.

Schließlich dürfen – will man ein umfassendes Bild des Künstlers Mendelssohn bieten – die bildnerischen Werke, vornehmlich Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, nicht fehlen. Ein thematischsystematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke (MWV), das 2009 in einer Studien-Ausgabe erschienen ist, soll dazu beitragen, den raschen Zugriff auf das Gesamtwerk zu fördern.

Angesichts der Bedeutung Mendelssohns einerseits und dessen wesentlich von außerkünstlerischen Motiven verursachter Vernachlässigung durch die wissenschaftliche wie praktische Rezeption andererseits bedarf selbst ein so umfassend angelegtes Konzept kaum der ausführlichen Rechtfertigung. Die von Julius Rietz zwischen 1874 und 1877 vorgelegte Werkausgabe, oft irrig Alte Gesamtausgabe genannt, war alles andere als vollständig und – anders etwa als die alte Bach-Ausgabe – keineswegs von der Intention getragen, das Gesamtwerk von Mendelssohn vorzulegen; sie hieß dementsprechend bescheiden Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchgesehene Ausgabe. Die von Rietz getroffene Auswahl hatte zur Konsequenz, dass ein beträchtli­cher Teil der Kompositionen Mendelssohns bis heute noch immer der Veröffentlichung harrt und ein weiterer bislang nur unzulänglich publiziert ist. Daran haben die wenigen Bände der seit 1960 im Deutschen Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, erschienenen Neuausgabe kaum etwas ändern können.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe schließt hinsichtlich der zeitlichen Disposition der zu edierenden Kompositionen an diese Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys an, trägt aber grundsätzlich dem neuesten Standard der Editionsprinzipien wissenschaftlicher Gesamtausgaben Rechnung. Dies bezieht sich namentlich auf die Maxime, dass alle Herausgeberentscheidungen – sei es im Notentext selbst, sei es im Kritischen Bericht – kenntlich und dem kritischen Nachvollzug des Benutzers zugänglich gemacht werden. Darüber hinaus entspricht die Ausgabe der heute allgemein akzeptierten Überzeugung, dass alle Stationen des Entstehungsprozesses bzw. der vom Komponisten verantworteten Verbreitung (Skizzen, Fassungen, selbstverfasste Versionen wie Klavierauszüge) zum Werk selbst gehören.

Diese Auffassung trifft ganz besonders in der spezifischen musik­ historischen Situation zu, in der Mendelssohn sich befand und die ihn dazu führte, den ästhetischen Anspruch des autonomen, ein für allemal abgeschlossenen Kunstwerks in ganz unterschiedlichen Graden der Vollendung zu realisieren. Davon legen die unterschiedlichen Fassungen zahlreicher Werke Zeugnis ab, aber

auch die Tatsache, dass der Komponist selbst viele abgeschlossene Kompositionen nicht der Veröffentlichung für wert hielt.

Dies stellt die differenzierende Hermeneutik der Quellen, die den editorischen Entscheidungen vorangehen muss, ebenso wie die editorische Pragmatik vor besonders schwierige Aufgaben, eröffnet aber auch die Chance, hinsichtlich von unfertigen oder unvollendeten Kompositionen beispielgebende Verfahrensweisen der Edition zu entwickeln.

Eine besondere Problematik ergibt sich daraus, dass Mendelssohn nur den von ihm veröffentlichten oder zur Veröffentlichung vorbereiteten Werken Opuszahlen beigegeben hat, viele seiner Werke also ohne autorisierte Opuszahl überliefert sind.

Dennoch haben sich – zumal durch die oben genannte von Julius Rietz verantwortete Ausgabe – die Opuszahlen von 73 an fest eingebürgert. Dieser Tatsache trug die vorliegende Ausgabe bis zum Jahre 2009 Rechnung, indem diese Opuszahlen weiter benutzt, aber durch eckige Klammern gekennzeichnet wurden.

Seit Erscheinen des Werkverzeichnisses (MWV) wird für die postum veröffentlichten Werke nur noch die dort eingeführte MWV-Bezeichnung verwendet.

Die Ausgabe erscheint in 13 Serien: Serie I Orchesterwerke Serie II Konzerte und Konzertstücke Serie III Kammermusikwerke Serie IV Klavier- und Orgelwerke Serie V Bühnenwerke Serie VI Geistliche Vokalwerke Serie VII Weltliche Vokalwerke Serie VIII Skizzen und Fragmente, die den in den Serien I bis VII veröffentlichten Werken nicht zugeordnet werden können; zusammen­hängende Skizzenkonvolute Serie IX Bearbeitungen und Instrumentationen Serie X Zeichnungen und Aquarelle Serie XI Briefe, Schriften und Tagebücher Serie XII Dokumente zur Lebensgeschichte Serie XIII Werkverzeichnis Die Werke bzw. diejenigen Fassungen der Kompositionen, denen Werkcharakter zukommt, erscheinen in den Hauptbänden, die auch den Kritischen Bericht enthalten. Sekundäre Fassungen, Klavierauszüge und Skizzen zu den Werken der Serien I bis VII werden in Supplementbänden vorgelegt; bei geringem Skizzenbestand kann dieser dem Kritischen Bericht angefügt werden.

Dem jeweiligen Status der Werkgenese entsprechend wird zwischen drei Typen der editorischen Präsentation unterschieden: –– Die Werkedition, deren Grundsätze der ausführlicheren Erläuterung bedürfen, gilt für die Hauptbände der Serien I bis VII und IX, gegebenenfalls auch für Supplementbände.

–– Die Inhaltsedition kommt in den Supplementbänden der Serien I bis VII und IX (z. B. fertige, aber nicht zum Druck bestimmte Fassungen) und in Bänden der Serie VIII (z. B. Fragmente in Reinschrift) zur Anwendung. Die Inhaltsedition hält sich streng an den Text der Quelle. Korrigiert werden lediglich offenkundige Versehen, über die im Kritischen Bericht referiert wird.

–– Die Quellenedition gilt in erster Linie für Skizzen und Entwürfe. Der Abdruck ist diplomatisch, nicht jedoch stets zeilen­ getreu; Zeilenwechsel im Original werden durch geeignete Zusatzzeichen angezeigt.

IX Zur Werkedition

Zum Kritischen Bericht

Die Edition der Werke in den Hauptbänden stellt das Ergebnis der umfassenden philologischen Sichtung und Interpretation durch den Herausgeber dar. Abweichungen von der Hauptquelle werden entweder durch die Kennzeichnung im Notentext (eckige Klammern oder Strichelung, Fußnoten), durch die Erläuterung im Kritischen Bericht oder – bei besonders gravierenden Eingriffen – durch beides angezeigt.

Darüber hinaus gelten für die Werkedition folgende Prinzipien: –– Die Partituranordnung und die Notation entsprechen den heute gültigen Regeln.

–– Die Schlüsselung der Vokalstimmen wird der heute üblichen Praxis angeglichen.

–– Die Instrumente werden durchweg mit italienischen Namen bezeichnet. Dagegen werden bei den Vokalstimmen entweder deutsche (deutscher oder lateinischer Text) oder englische Bezeichnungen (englischer Text) verwendet; nur für den Fall, dass der Text der Vokalstimmen zweisprachig, d. h. beispielsweise deutsch und englisch wiedergegeben werden muss, bietet die italienische Bezeichnung der Singstimmen einen gangbaren Kompromiss.

–– Orthographie und Silbentrennung verbaler Texte werden den heutigen Regeln angepasst, doch bleiben originale Lautfolge und charakteristische Wortformen gewahrt.

–– Abbreviaturen (auch solche für nicht ausgeschriebene Stimmen in Partitur-Manuskripten, wie z. B. „c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta“) werden im Allgemeinen stillschweigend aufgelöst. Über Abweichungen oder Besonderheiten hinsichtlich dieser Prinzipien wird im Kritischen Bericht Rechenschaft abgelegt.

Der Kritische Bericht, der in den Hauptbänden – soweit es der Umfang erlaubt – immer, in den Supplementbänden jedoch nur gelegentlich dem Notentext folgt, bietet die philologische Argumentation für den vorgelegten Text und weist die Quellen aus, aufgrund derer die editorischen Entscheidungen getroffen wurden. Er enthält die folgenden konstitutiven Abschnitte: –– Verzeichnis der im Kritischen Bericht verwendeten Abkürzungen; –– Quellenbeschreibung; –– Auflistung der textkritisch nicht relevanten Lesarten einzelner Quellen, insbesondere Korrekturverzeichnisse bei autographen Quellen; –– Quellenbewertung; –– Erläuterung der speziellen editorischen Verfahren des jeweiligen Bandes; –– Textkritische Anmerkungen, die über Einzelentscheidungen des Herausgebers Rechenschaft ablegen.

Preface The Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is intended to afford public access to all the available compositions, letters, writings and other documents relating to the artistic work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in an appropriately scholarly form. As a historico-critical edition, it aims to be of equal value to researchers and practicing musicians alike.

The musical works take pride of place. Next to completed compositions in all their versions, the Leipzig Edition also presents the sources underlying the creative process (sketches and drafts) as well as unfinished compositions (fragments). In addition, Mendelssohn’s letters are extremely important. It is generally acknowledged that reliably edited correspondence is indispensable for the scholarly study of any composer’s work.

In Mendelssohn’s case, however, the correspondence is of particular significance, not only because it reveals the composer to be an outstanding witness of his time, but also because of the exceptional literary merit of many of his letters. Finally, if one wishes to provide a comprehensive picture of Mendelssohn as an artist, his pictorial works of art, principally drawings and watercolors, cannot be overlooked. A thematic-systematic cata­ logue of his musical works (MWV) was published in a study edition in 2009 and helps provide quick access to the composer’s entire life’s work.

A comprehensive study like this hardly calls for lengthy justification, given both Mendelssohn’s importance as a composer and his neglect by the scholarly and musical world alike, essentially attributable to non-artistic motives. The edition of Mendelssohn’s works published by Julius Rietz between 1874 and 1877 and often erroneously referred to as Alte Gesamtausgabe, was anything but complete, and unlike the Old Bach Edition, for example, was not compiled with any intention of presenting Mendelssohn’s complete works, hence its modest title, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Werke. Kritisch durchge­sehene Ausgabe. As a consequence of Rietz’s selection, a consider­able amount of Mendelssohn’s compositions still awaits publi­ cation to this day, while others have been published only in an inadequate form. The few volumes of the new edition which have been published since 1960 by Deutscher Verlag für Musik, Leipzig, have failed to make any major change to this state of affairs.

As regards the chronological arrangement of the compositions to be edited, the present publication conforms to this Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys, but generally takes account of the latest principles governing the publication of complete scholarly editions. This refers in particular to the tenet that all the editor’s decisions – whether relating to the score itself or to the Kritischer Bericht (Critical Report) – must be clearly stated and made accessible to the critical understanding of the user. In addition, the edition conforms to the view generally accepted today that every stage of the composing process or of the publication attributable to the composer himself (sketches, different versions, his own transcriptions such as piano scores) forms part of the work itself.

This view is particularly pertinent in the light of the specific musico-historical situation in Mendelssohn’s day, which led him to fulfill the aesthetic demands attendant on a definitive, self-contained work of art in highly differing degrees of perfection. This is evidenced not only by the differing versions of

numerous works, but also by the fact that the composer himself considered many completed works not worth publishing. This hampers a differentiating hermeneutic approach to the sources, which must precede any editorial decision, and a pragmatic approach on the part of the editor. At the same time, however, it provides an opportunity for the development of exemplary methods for the editing of unfinished or otherwise incomplete compositions.

A particularly problematic situation results from the fact that Mendelssohn only gave opus numbers to the works which he published or prepared for publication. Many of his works have thus come down to us without authorized opus numbers.

Nevertheless, the opus numbers from 73 onward have long since come into general use, in part through the aforementioned edition supervised by Julius Rietz. The present edition took this into account until the year 2009 by continuing to use these opus numbers, albeit placing them between square brackets. Since the publication of the Thematic Catalogue (MWV), only the MWV designation introduced there will be used to identify the posthumously published works.

The publication will appear in thirteen series, i.e.

Orchestral Works Series I Series II Concertos and Concert Pieces Series III Chamber Music Series IV Piano and Organ Works Series V Stage Works Series VI Sacred Vocal Works Series VII Secular Vocal Works Series VIII Sketches and fragments which cannot be assigned to the works published in series I to VII; associated groups of sketches Arrangements and Orchestrations Series IX Series X Drawings and Watercolors Letters, Writings and Diaries Series XI Series XII Documents relating to Mendelssohn’s life Series XIII Thematic Catalogue of Works The works or those versions of the compositions which can be attributed the status of a work will appear in the main volumes, which will also contain the Kritischer Bericht. Secondary versions, piano scores and sketches relating to the works in series I – VII will be presented in supplementary volumes. In cases where only a small number of sketches are available, these may be included in the Kritischer Bericht.

Three forms of editorial presentation are distinguished, corresponding to the respective genesis of the work, as follows.

–– The Edition of W orks, the principles of which call for a detailed explanation, will apply to the main volumes of series I – VII and IX, and, if indicated, to the supplementary volumes.

–– The Edition of Content, which usually will apply to the supplementary volumes to series I – VII and IX (e.g. finished but unprinted versions) and volumes of series VIII (e.g. fair copies of fragments). The edition of content will strictly adhere to the source texts. Only obvious mistakes will be corrected, and these will be referred to in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– The Edition of Sources relates primarily to sketches and drafts.

Reproductions will be faithful, but lines may in some cases be arranged in a different way; line changes in the original will be indicated by suitable supplementary symbols.

XI Edition of Works

Kritischer Bericht (Critical Report)

The editing of works in the main volumes represents the results of an exhaustive philological study and its interpretation by the editor. Divergences from the principal source will be indicated either by markings in the score (square brackets or broken lines, footnotes), with an explanation in the Kritischer Bericht, or – in particularly serious cases – by both.

In addition, the following principles apply to the edition of works: –– The arrangement of the score and the notation comply with present-day standards.

–– The keys for the vocal parts are adjusted in accordance with conventional present-day practice.

–– The instruments are designated by their Italian names throughout. By contrast, German terms are used for the vocal parts (where the words are in German or Latin), or English terms (where the words are in English); only in such cases where the text of the vocal parts is rendered bilingually (for example in German and in English), voice designations in Italian are used as a viable compromise.

–– The spelling and syllabification of verbal texts are adapted in accordance with present-day rules, but the original phonetic sequence and characteristic word forms are retained.

–– Abbreviations (including those for parts which are not completely written out in score manuscripts, such as “c[ol] Ob 1 8va alta”), are in general tacitly written out in full.

An explanation of any divergence from these principles or peculiarities in their use is given in the Kritischer Bericht.

The Kritischer Bericht which, space permitting, always follows the score in the main volumes and, if appropriate, also in the supplementary volumes, presents the philological legitimation of the text as printed and indicates the sources on which the editorial decisions are based. It contains the following essential paragraphs: –– List of abbreviations used in the Kritischer Bericht.

–– Description of sources.

–– A list of the text-critically non-relevant readings of individual sources, particularly indexes of corrections in the case of manuscript sources.

–– Evaluation of sources.

–– An explanation of the particular editing methods for the respec­tive volume.

–– Text-critical remarks which account for individual decisions by the editor.

Einleitung Entstehungsanlass und Komposition Die Jahre 1829 und 1830 lassen sich mit Fug und Recht als die ‚Sinfonienjahre‘ des jungen Mendelssohn bezeichnen. Nach den zwölf Streichersinfonien der Schülerzeit (MWV N 1–12, 1821–1823) hatte der Komponist 1824 mit der c-Moll-Sinfonie (MWV N 13) seine erste Orchestersinfonie vorgelegt; diese wurde 1829 überarbeitet, 1830 zunächst ohne Opuszahl in London, 1834 dann als op. 11 bei Schlesinger publiziert und erfreute sich beträchtlicher Beliebtheit, zumal in Aufführungen durch den Komponisten selbst.1 Dass es sich bei op. 11 jedoch nicht um eine „große Sinfonie“ Beethovenschen Zuschnittes handelte, zeigt sich weniger an ihrer Länge2 als an dem Umstand, dass die Sinfonie an sich einen neuen, umfassenden ästhe­tischen Anspruch erlangt hatte und nach Beethoven, so Carl Dahlhaus, „zur monumentalen Gattung geworden [war], in der sich ein kompositorischer Ehrgeiz manifestierte, der zum Höchsten griff“.3 Dies implizierte neben großem Umfang und großer Besetzung vor allem die Ambition, Sinfonien zu hochpoetisch intentionierten Ideenkunstwerken zu machen, zu „Volksreden an die Menschheit“, wie es Adorno formulierte.4 Wie schon bei Beethoven musste dies nicht zwingend ein explizites Programm bedingen; die poetische Idee konnte sich auch in nonverbal-assoziativen Topoi und innermusikalischer Kohä-

renz (bzw. dem Verhältnis beider zueinander) manifestieren.5 Von den vier Sinfonien, die Mendelssohn 1829 und 1830 in Angriff nahm, ist es vor allem das Werkpaar der „Schottischen“ und der „Italienischen“ (MWV N 16 und N 18), das diesen Zwiespalt zwischen extroversiver und introversiver Sinngebung verdeutlicht, da der Komponist in beiden Fällen die verbale Fixie­rung durch den Titel unterdrückte bzw. zurücknahm, sodass der Hörer auf die Deutung von Topoi angewiesen blieb.6 Während über die in derselben Zeit allenfalls angedachte „Revolutions­sinfonie“ keine diesbezüglichen Aussagen möglich sind,7 ist jedenfalls die Zeichenhaftigkeit in der „Reformations-­ Sinfonie“ expliziter als in den beiden Schwesterwerken – ein Umstand, der das Werk aus Sicht des Komponisten und der Rezipienten so zwiespältig werden ließ.8 Wie in anderen Werken dienten Mendelssohn auch hier externe Stimuli als Initial­ zündung: Während diese bei der „Schottischen“ und der „Italienischen“ primär geographischer Natur waren, ist die „Reformations-­ Sinfonie“ religiös-historisch semantisiert. Das Ausgangsmaterial, wie es sich in der Komposition manifestiert, ist unverkennbar: der Luther-Choral (neben dem das Finale prägenden „Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott“ im später verworfenen Entwurf einer Überleitung zum Finale zusätzlich „Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr“), die Stile-antico-Vokalpolyphonie, für die in der Literatur oft Palestrina bemüht wird, die aber viel-

XIII mehr eine romantische Reimagination eines auf die Renaissance rückprojizierten „strengen Satzes“ ist,9 sowie schließlich der Kontrapunkt in der Nachfolge Johann Sebastian Bachs. Hinzu kommt als direktes Zitat noch das berühmte – und später u. a. in Richard Wagners Parsifal wieder aufgegriffene – Dresdner Amen: die mehrstimmige Responsoriumsformel aus der katholischen Dresdner Hofliturgie.10 Bis jetzt war nie klar gewesen, woher Mendelssohn diese Formel kennen konnte; in der Tat hatte er aber schon 1819 mit der Familie Dresden besucht und dort offenbar auch einem Gottesdienst in der Hofkirche beigewohnt.11 Somit liegt dem Zitat in der „Reformations-Sinfonie“ wohl ein direktes Hörerlebnis zugrunde, und dieses Hörerlebnis ist katholisch konnotiert.

Als unmittelbarer Anlass für die Komposition wird in der Regel der 300. Jahrestag der Confessio Augustana am 25. Juni 1830 angesehen. Das Jubiläum der Übergabe von Philipp Melanchthons „Augsburger Bekenntnis“, eine der wichtigsten Glaubensschriften des Luthertums, wurde vielerorts im Kontext des aktuellen Konfessionendiskurses (etwa der Positionierung des Luthertums innerhalb der preußischen Union) als kirchenpolitisches Ereignis erster Ordnung in großem Stil begangen.12 Er arbeite „an der Sinfonie zum Reformationsfeste (es ist in diesem Jahre eins zur Feyer der Stiftung der Augsb: Confession)“, schreibt der Komponist im Februar 1830 an Carl Klingemann.13 Diese Fixierung auf ein spezifisches Ereignis scheint aber nicht die Initialzündung, sondern das Resultat einer nachträglichen Überlegung gewesen zu sein. Zum einen hat Judith Silber zeigen können, dass die Sinfonie gar keine offizielle Auftragskomposition für die offiziellen Berliner Feierlichkeiten sein konnte, da letztere überhaupt erst am 4. April 1830 angesetzt wurden;

zum anderen war das typische Medium für solche Ereignisse die festliche Chorkomposition (so wie Mendelssohns eigene „Dürer-Festmusik“ MWV D 1 oder die „Humboldt-Kantate“ MWV D 2) und nicht die große Orchestersinfonie, und in dieser Weise wurde auch hier verfahren.14 Noch am 5. Juni 1830, also nach der Vollendung der Erstfassung, schrieb Lea Mendelssohn Bartholdy an ihren Sohn im Sinne einer retrospektiven Bindung der Komposition an das Fest: „Apropos der Refor.

Simphon.! Hast Du den Befehl des Königs wegen der Feier gelesen? Dabei fiel mir ein, Schatz! ob es nicht eine paßende Gelegenheit wäre, sie dem Könige zuzueignen?“15 Auch Mendelssohns Antwort16 deutet darauf hin, dass im Nachdenken über das Werk der Gedenktag an sich zwar eine Rolle spielte, wenn auch möglicherweise nur als äußerer Ansporn für eine zeitige Fertigstellung, dass Mendelssohn aber kaum auf eine tatsäch­ liche Aufführung anlässlich der Berliner Festivitäten spekulieren konnte und wollte.

Zudem hatte der Komponist bereits lange vorher angefangen, über die Sinfonie nachzudenken, offenbar schon vor seiner Abreise nach England im April 1829. Dies belegt ein Brief der älteren Schwester aus Berlin vom 27. Mai, der von der Komposition wie von einer ausgemachten Sache spricht: „Nur noch eins, was macht denn die d moll Symphonie, denkst Du an sie?“17 Mendelssohn selbst dachte zur gleichen Zeit in anderem Zusammenhang – er war aufgefordert worden, am Musikfest in Birmingham im Oktober 1829 teilzunehmen – über ein Werk auf den Lutherchoral nach: „Habe ich Zeit und Lust bis dahin, so mache ich vielleicht eine neue Musik, auf Luthers celebrated Hymn: Ein veste Burg ist unser Gott […].“18 In direkter Reaktion auf Fanny Mendelssohns Brief bestätigte ferner Carl

Juli: „So freue ich mich namentlich nach dem, was ich von der Sinfonie weiss, auf das was noch kommen muss.“19 Weiter unten im selben Brief ist noch die Rede davon, Mendelssohn werde sich im Ausland einen Namen machen durch „den Orden vom goldenen Sporn vom Papst, etwas für eine Komposition über ‚Eine feste Burg‘, und Success einer Oper beim Hoftheater in Lappland […].“20 Ungeachtet des scherzhaften Tonfalls bestätigt auch dies, dass die Integration des Chorals in die Sinfonie schon zu diesem Zeitpunkt fest eingeplant war, d. h. dass es sich um eine „Reformations“-­Sinfonie handelte (was im Kontext des oben zitierten Briefes auch bedeutet, dass Klingemann das Sujet der Sinfonie wohl kannte, ihm die Zuspitzung auf die Confessio Augustana aber neu und damit erklärungsbedürftig sein musste). Wenig später machte Mendelssohn in einer – ansonsten schwer zu deutenden – Bemerkung anlässlich eines Bergwerksbesuches in Wales in einem Brief an die Schwestern vollends explizit, dass es sich bei der Sinfonie und der Musik über „Ein feste Burg“ um dasselbe Projekt handelte: „Mein Violinquartett schicke ich bald fertig hinüber, ud. zur Vollendung meiner Reform. Symph. war ich neulich 500’ [Fuß] unter der Erde, viell. nicht ohne Erfolg.“21 Von einer Vollendung der Sinfonie konnte aber vorerst überhaupt keine Rede sein: Mendelssohn formulierte hier – wie nicht selten – übertrieben optimistisch. Noch am 10. September kündigte er im Gegenteil an: „meine Reform.symph. denk ich dann, so Gott will, hier anzufangen“.22 Eine Knieverletzung, die er sich kurz darauf zuzog, hielt ihn dann aber zwei Monate bettlägerig in London fest, und erst nach der Heimkehr nach Berlin Anfang Dezember kam die kompositorische Aktivität langsam wieder in Gang, wobei die d-Moll-Sinfonie nun ganz oben auf der Prioritätenliste der größeren Werke stand. In dem bereits erwähnten Brief an Klingemann vom 10. Februar 1830 äußerte Mendelssohn die Hoffnung, „Ende dieses Monats fortzugehen, wenn ich meine Sinfonie aus d moll, an deren erstem Allegro ich jetzt fleißig schreibe, beendigt haben werde; es wird freilich später, als ich gedacht hatte“23. Die schon hier angedeutete Skepsis sollte aber begründet bleiben: In den folgenden Monaten ist viel

von der Arbeit an der Sinfonie die Rede, die aber zunächst keine großen Fortschritte machte und zusätzlich durch eine Masern­ erkrankung und das bei Eduard Devrient nachzulesende Experiment verzögert wurde, die volle Partitur des ersten Satzes Takt für Takt zu notieren: „Bekanntlich pflegen die Componisten die Instrumente, welche den leitenden musikalischen Gedanken tragen, zuerst in das Linien­system der Partitur einzuschreiben, nur die Bässe und einzelne hervortretende Instrumentaleffecte hinzuzufügen, und so den Umriß des Musikstückes fortzuführen, den sie erst nachher vollstimmig ausbilden. Felix nun unternahm es, die fertige Composition in allen Rastrallinien von oben bis unten, Tact für Tact einzutragen. Allerdings pflegte er seine Compositionen nicht eher aufzuschreiben, als bis sie ganz fertig in seinem Kopfe standen und er sie schon seinen Vertrautesten auf dem Flügel vorgespielt hatte, immerhin blieb es eine gewaltige Gedächtnißarbeit“.24 Ob dies tatsächlich zutrifft, lässt sich am Autograph nicht verifizieren, zumal die Behauptung, dass Mendelssohn seine Kompositionen immer „ganz fertig in seinem Kopfe“ hatte, sicher einer Idealvorstellung des 19. Jahrhunderts vom musikalischen Genie geschuldet ist (die aber für Mendelssohn bis heute anhält); dies muss insofern relativiert werden, als für viele seiner Werke umfangreiche Skizzen und Korrekturen den Entstehungsprozess chrakterisieren. Immerhin aber berichtet Julius Schubring über die Niederschrift der 1826 entstandenen „Trompeten-­Ouvertüre“ MWV P 2 ganz Ähnliches.25 In jedem Fall konstatierte der Komponist laut Devrient, „die Arbeit sei so anstrengend, daß er sie nie wiederholen werde, und ließ es bei dem ersten Stücke der Symphonie bewenden“.26 Erst im Frühjahr 1830 wurde die Vollendung absehbar. Dies ist aus einer Reihe von innerhalb des Hauses Leipziger Straße 3 ausgetauschten Briefen von März und April des Jahres ersichtlich:27 „die Zeit, die ich noch hier bleibe, werde ich auf meinem Zimmer zubringen ud. fleißig schreiben, damit die Sinfonie ud. das projectirte Sing-Akademie-stück weiter fortschreitet“ (14. März);28 „ich habe heute an meiner Sinfonie geschrieben“ (um den 15. März);29 „an meiner Sinfonie hoffe ich morgen das 3te Stück zu beendigen (Du siehst, daß ich fleißig war)“

März);30 „da schob ich denn die Reise hinaus und fing eine grössere Arbeit noch an, eine Sinfonie fürs Orchester nämlich, mit der ich mich täglich viel beschäftigte; sie ist noch nicht ganz beendigt, doch hoffe ich sie noch vor meiner Abreise fertig machen zu können, da ich schon am Anfange des letzten Stückes bin.“ (9. April);31 „Nach meiner Reise habe ich […] eine Symphonie fürs ganze Orchester, an derer letztes Stück ich jetzt arbeite, angefangen“ (11. April);32 „Denn von einer großen Symphonie an der ich arbeite, sind bis jetzt nur die ersten drei Stücke fertig“ (13. April);33 „Ich wollte Du känntest meine neue Symphonie. Wenn ich wiederkomme dirigiere ich sie doch, u n s zum Spass, der erste Satz ist ein dickes Tier mit Borsten, als Medizin gegen schwache Magen zu empfehlen“ (15. April);34 und schließlich „ich arbeite aber eben am letzten Stück meiner Sinfonie, bin daher sehr eilig“ (25. April).35 Auf den 12. Mai – einen Tag vor seiner Abreise in Richtung Süddeutschland und Italien – ist endlich der Abschluss der Partitur in seiner ersten Fassung datiert.

Die Bezeichnung „Reformations-Sinfonie“ blieb dem Werk jedenfalls erhalten. Am deutlichsten wird dies in der scherzhaften bzw. selbstironischen Frage des Komponisten an seine ältere Schwester, wie er die fertige Komposition denn nennen solle: „Samle doch Stimmen über den Titel, den ich wählen soll: Reformationssinfonie, Confessionssinfonie, Sinfonie zu einem Kirchenfest (für den Papst), Kindersinfonie, oder wie Du willst; schreib mir drüber, ud statt aller dummen Vorschläge, einen klugen“.36 Der Unernst der Frage geht schon aus dem Vorschlag hervor, das grundlutherische Werk in Zusammenhang mit dem Papst zu bringen, sowie dem Verweis auf die „Kindersinfonien“, die Mendelssohn zu Weihnachten 1827 und 1828 sowie zur Silberhochzeit seiner Eltern am 26. Dezember 1829 – diese offen­bar durch das Liederspiel Aus der Fremde MWV L 6 ersetzt – komponiert hatte (MWV P 4, P 6, P 8).37 Dennoch macht die Formulierung des Briefes deutlich, dass Mendelssohn bereit gewesen wäre, ernstgemeinte alternative Titelvorschläge zu erwägen – vor allem aber, dass er es nie in Betracht zog, das Werk (wie die „Italienische“ und „Schottische“) ganz ohne Titel an

die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Die Adressatin ließ sich auf diese Überlegungen jedoch nicht ein: „Ich freue mich über die verheißene Partitur über die angekündigte Herausgabe der Symphonie, die mich, unter einem andern Namen, als dem der Reformationssymphonie, ebenso fremd angucken würde, als wenn Du mit einem Mal Petzold hießest.“38 Entsprechend wurde das Autograph vom Komponisten mit einem Titelblatt mit der Aufschrift „Sinfonie zur Feyer der Kirchenreformation“ versehen.

Für eine Aufführung in Berlin (ob nun zu den Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten oder anderweitig) war es jedenfalls zu spät; Mendelssohn war aber offenbar auch nicht bereit, dafür seine Abreise zu verschieben. Die in Berlin verbliebene Familie bedauerte dies, zumal angesichts der aus ihrer Sicht mangelhaften Qualität der Chöre Eduard Grells, die stattdessen erklangen. Geradezu ironisch, da der Unmöglichkeit ihres Vorschlags bewusst, schrieb Fanny Hensel am 5. Juni: „Gieb Deine Reformationssymphonie heraus, gleich, den 25sten huj. ist das Confessionsfest, da müßte sie da seyn.“39 Wenig später schlägt ihre Schwester Rebecka in dieselbe Kerbe: „Gäbs nur beim hiesigen Confessionsfeste etwas Besseres zu hören, als Mantius in der Nikolaikirche ud. eine Musik v. Grell. Fanny meinte (fast zu jämmerlich) Du würdest bei der Gelegenheit in Baiern die schönsten Feierlichkeiten erleben. Ach, ich werde es wol zu Hause verbringen, ud. an Deine Symphonie denken, giebt uns dann der Himmel einen heitern Tag, so ist die Kirche da […].“40 Und am Tag des Festes selbst klingt es ebenso: „Du in Deinem katholischen Lande hast wohl ganz vergessen, wozu Deine Symphonie hätte müssen gespielt werden, nämlich heut, ud. hier. Du meinst, ich fürchte, Du würdest katholisch werden, liebes Kind, das würde mich gar wenig grämen, werde Du ein Türke, mein Felix bleibst Du doch, den ich mehr liebe, als die Meisten. – Aber wir haben heut Confessionsfest, ud. darum haben sie von den Thürmen geblasen.“41 In der Zwischenzeit war der Komponist auf Reisen nicht müßig gewesen, und fast wäre es gleich auf der ersten Reisestation Leipzig zu einer Aufführung gekommen. XVI aus seiner Berliner Zeit gut kannte, bot ihm an, die Sinfonie auf das Programm des bevorstehenden Theater-Konzerts zum Pfingstfest am 31. Mai zu setzen.42 Mendelssohn war hiervon sehr angetan und sagte Dorn eine Abschrift der Partitur zu, da er sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits in Weimar befinden würde.43 Wie aus seinem Brief vom 2. Juni hervorgeht, zog sich die Erstellung dieser Abschrift aber zu lange hin, nicht zuletzt, da der ebenfalls in Leipzig ansässige Heinrich Marschner nochmals Revisionsvorschläge gemacht hatte, die beim Komponisten auf fruchtbaren Boden gefallen waren. Der Brief, bereits in Weimar geschrieben, ist in vielerlei Hinsicht so aufschlussreich, dass er hier ausführlich zitiert werden soll: „Anbei erfolgt meine Sinfonie höchst pünktlich und zur bestimmten Zeit. Hoffentlich kann sie noch bis vorgestern ausgeschrieben, einstudirt und aufgeführt werden. Ernstlich zu reden aber bitte ich Sie sehr um Verzeihung, daß ich nicht mein Versprechen erfüllen konnte; Sie behaupteten es vorher zu wissen; das war aber nicht möglich, denn ich selbst war fest dazu entschlossen, fing in den ersten Tagen meines Hierseins die nöthigen Correcturen in meiner Partitur zu machen an, und kam dabei so tief in’s Aendern hinein, daß ich im letzten Stück einiges Neue hinzu und vieles Alte wegthun mußte. Auch dann wäre noch Zeit gewesen; aber da ließ mich der empfohlene Copist von Tage zu Tage sitzen, und wenn ich nicht morgen mit dem Frühesten abreise, so glaube ich, es wäre noch nicht fertig; denn meine Drohungen mit Wegreisen u. dergl. helfen hier nichts mehr, wo ich statt vier beinahe vierzehn Tage geblieben bin. Ich schicke Ihnen nun dennoch die Sinfonie, erstlich um Sie zu bitten, sie sich noch einmal durchzusehen und sie unserem Freund Marschner mitzutheilen, ob ihm die Kürzungen im letzten Stück genügen (wie ich hoffe), dann um Sie zu bitten, dieselbe, wenn Sie sie nicht mehr brauchen, was nur, leider fürcht’ ich, sehr bald sein wird, an meine Schwester, Madame Hensel, Leipziger Straße Nr. 3 in Berlin, entweder mit Gelegenheit oder mit Fahrpost unfrankirt zu senden, da ich ihr eine Abschrift versprochen und schon in einem Briefe angekündigt habe. Verzeihen sie die Belästigung, indessen dacht’ ich mir bis vorgestern immer vielleicht möglich, daß die Abschrift zur Zeit kommen könnte, und nun, da ich mir’s einmal vorgenommen habe, sie Ihnen zu schicken, kann ich es nicht lassen. Vielleicht ist es auch zu Etwas gut, daß der Aufschub die Aufführung verhindert hat; denn mir ist nachher eingefallen, daß sich der Choral und alle Katholicismen im

Theater doch sonderbar ausgenommen hätten; und eine Reformations-Sinfonie zu Pfingsten will auch nicht recht klingen.“44 Für die in Leipzig ebenfalls begangenen Feierlichkeiten zum Jubiläum des Augsburger Bekenntnisses vom 25. bis 27. Juni scheint die Sinfonie wiederum nicht in Betracht gekommen zu sein (und weder Mendelssohn noch Dorn erwähnen dies als Möglichkeit); hier erklangen Bach-Kantaten.45 Dorn sandte die Abschrift wie gewünscht nach Berlin an Fanny Hensel, von wo sie später in den Besitz von Eduard Ritz und nach dessen Tod in den seines Bruders Julius Rietz überging. Sie ist für die Entstehungsgeschichte des Werkes von hohem Interesse, da sie den Stand der Komposition Ende Mai 1830 präzise fixiert und somit belegt, dass praktisch alle größeren Revisionen (bis auf den Schluss der Finalcoda) schon zu diesem Zeitpunkt voll­ zogen waren und nicht erst im Vorfeld der Erstaufführung im November 1832 (siehe den Kritischen Bericht).

Selbst im katholischen München ging Mendelssohn die Sinfonie nicht aus dem Kopf – anlässlich der Fronleichnams­ prozession am 10. Juni präzisierte er die dem Werk zugrunde liegende poetische Idee: „Ich möchte, ihr wäret neulich mit mir gewesen, als ich unter dem Volk während der Prozession umherging, ud. mich viel umsah ud sehr zufrieden mit mir war wegen der ersten Stücke meiner Kirchensinfonie, denn ich hätte nicht gedacht, daß es mit dem Contrast der ersten beiden Sätze noch heut so passe; aber hättest Du gehört, wie das ganze Volk sehr eintönig Gebete absang, dann mal ein heiserer Priester mitten durch schrie, oder ein andrer das Evangelium ablas und wie mitten hinein auf einmal lustige Militairmusik mit Trompeten hineinschallte, und wie die bunten gemalten Fähnlein hin ud her schwankten, und wie die Chorknaben mit goldnen Troddeln behängt waren – ich denke Du hättest mich gelobt, wie ichs denn selbst that und mich freute.“46 Gleichzeitig aber kam die Sinfonie einer Aufführung noch näher als in Leipzig – die Leitung der königlichen Hofmusik äußerte Interesse sowohl an der c-Moll-Sinfonie als auch an der „Reformations-Sinfonie“. „Wahrscheinlich aber wird nächstens am Vormittag sich das Orchester expreß versammeln, um meine beiden Sinfonien zu spielen; sie haben mich nämlich darum für die Concerte des nächsten Winters gebeten“, schrieb der Komponist am 27. Juni nach Hause.47 Wenig später fand in der Tat eine Durchspielprobe am Klavier in kleinem Kreise statt: „Gestern Morgen war bei mir musikal. matinée: Baron Poissl [der Hoftheaterinten-

XVII dant], Kapellmeister Stuntz, Bärmann, Vespermann, ud. mehrere junge Musiker; ich mußte ihnen meine hora zweimal ud. dann meine beiden Sinfonien vorspielen, ud. es hat mich sehr gefreut zu sehen wie die Sachen Eindruck auf sie machten, und wie sie bei der Reform. Sinf. ganz anders ernsthaft wurden, als bei der andern. Die Orchesterprobe kommt zu Stande ud. wird hübsch; sie kamen überein, daß ich, wenn die ganze Kapelle versammelt sey, ihnen die Sinf. erst auf dem Clavier vorspielen solle, damit sie hörten, was ich damit meinte; mir gefiel die Idee nicht übel“.48 Letztlich beschränkte sich das Interesse des Orchesters jedoch auf die c-Moll-Sinfonie: In den Briefen der folgenden Wochen ist nur noch von einer Sinfonie die Rede, bei der es sich nur um jenes ältere Werk von 1824 gehandelt haben kann. Nur diese wurde vom vollen Orchester geprobt, obwohl schließlich auch sie nicht öffentlich aufgeführt wurde.

Während der Reise durch Italien war an eine Aufführung nicht zu denken, und so ergab sich die nächste Chance erst ein Jahr später, wiederum in München, wo Mendelssohn am 17. Oktober 1831 ein Benefizkonzert veranstaltete. Erneut galt es zwischen der c-Moll-Sinfonie und der „Reformations-­Sinfonie“ zu wählen, und wieder erhielt letztlich erstere den Vorzug. Anfangs hoffte der Komponist noch, Zeit für die länge­re und schwierigere „Reformations-Sinfonie“ zu haben: „[…] auch freue ich mich nicht wenig drauf, einmal wieder ein Orchester zu diri­ giren; man verspricht mir zwei Proben und in dem Falle gebe ich meine dmoll Sinfonie“.49 Diese Zeit war aber offenbar nicht, und wenige Wochen später heißt es: „die cmoll Sinfonie macht den Anfang“.50 Die nächste Chance bot sich Anfang Dezember 1831 in Paris, und nun fing Mendelssohn doch an ungeduldig zu werden, zweifelte andererseits, ob das „dicke Tier mit Borsten“51 geeignet sei, sich beim Pariser Publikum einzuführen: „Die Frage ist was ich zuerst gebe, denn mit einer Sinfonie muß man auftreten, und erst dann mit einer Ouvertüre kommen; die dmoll Sinfonie ist nicht zum Anfang gut, und die alte cmoll langweilt mich. Wahrscheinlich werde ich also die aus adur componiren und geben müssen.“52 Zur Fertigstellung der „Italienischen“ kam es bekanntlich nicht, und die c-Moll-Sinfonie wurde eben-

falls beiseite gelegt, „weil das Stück in London so oft gespielt worden sey“.53 So einigten sich der Komponist und der Leiter der Konzerte am Conservatoire, François Habeneck, doch darauf, neben der Ouvertüre zum Sommernachtstraum MWV P 3 die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ in Angriff zu nehmen,54 und Anfang Februar wurde das Orchestermaterial erstellt.55 Auf die große Vorfreude, die sich in einer Reihe von Briefen ausdrückt, folgte allerdings eine noch größere Ernüchterung: Die Aufführung wurde immer wieder verschoben, und noch am 17. März 1832 hieß es anlässlich der geplanten Abreise nur: „Den 8ten sitze ich dann in der Post und fahre nach London, habe vorher noch meine Sinfonie im Conserv: gehört.“56 Bezeichnenderweise ist es nicht der Komponist, sondern sein zu der Zeit in Paris ansässiger Freund Ferdinand Hiller, der über die einzige Durchspielprobe berichtet: „Das Ende von Mendelssohn’s Verhältniß zu jenem herrlichen Orchester war aber unerfreulich, ja, verletzend für ihn. Seine Reformations-Symphonie sollte gegeben werden. Man spielte sie in einer Probe, der ich nicht beiwohnte; aber nach der Aussage unserer jungen Freunde sprach das Werk die Musiker nicht an und man führte es nicht auf. ‚Es sei gar zu scholastisch‘, sagte mir Cuvillon, ‚zu viele Fugatos, zu wenig Melodie‘ u. dergl. mehr. Bis zu einem gewissen Grade muß später der Componist diesem Urtheil beigetreten sein, denn er hat das Werk nicht veröffentlicht. Aber zu jener Zeit war es ihm werth, und die stille Weise, in der man es beseitigte, hat ihm jedenfalls weh gethan.“57 Ob Mendelssohn die Gründe für diese Zurückweisung je erfuhr oder ob ihn nur die Tatsache an sich verletzte – jedenfalls verlor er in den letzten Wochen seines Paris-Aufenthaltes kein Wort mehr über die Sinfonie. Zudem war die Cholera ausgebrochen, und es fanden ohnehin keine öffentlichen Konzerte statt. Dass sein bislang ungebrochener Enthusiasmus für das Werk – noch im Januar 1832 hatte er explizit über eine Publikation nachgedacht58 – durch die ständigen erfolglosen Aufführungsversuche mittlerweile einen Dämpfer erlitten hatte, scheint aber durch den bereits von Judith Silber diskutierten Umstand belegt, dass er während des gesamten Aufenthaltes in London von Ende April bis Ende Juni 1832 keine weiteren Versuche unternahm, das Werk dort in die

XVIII Öffentlichkeit zu tragen. Angesichts seines in England bereits etablierten Rufs wäre dies dort sicher problemlos möglich gewesen, aber die Sinfonie wird in der ganzen Zeit kein einziges Mal auch nur erwähnt.59 Erstaufführung, frühe Rezeption und Distanzierung Die Erstaufführung fand somit nach Mendelssohns Rückkehr in Berlin statt, im Kontext des letztlich gescheiterten Versuches, sich in seiner Heimatstadt als professioneller Musiker zu etablieren. Neben zahlreichen anderen Auftritten organisierte der Komponist im Winter 1832 eine Serie von drei Konzerten im Saal der Singakademie zugunsten des Orchesterwitwenfonds.

Dass deren erstes am 15. November mit der (noch einmal, wenn auch nur relativ geringfügig, revidierten) „Reforma­tionsSinfonie“ eröffnet wurde, hat den Charakter eines State­ments: Es war der Versuch, sich als Komponist „großer“ Sinfonien im Beethovenschen Duktus in der Öffentlichkeit zu etablieren.

Wir erfahren nichts darüber, wie die Sinfonie vom Publikum aufgenommen wurde, aber der wortführende (und erzkonservative) Berliner Kritiker Ludwig Rellstab widmete ihr gleich zwei ausführliche Besprechungen, die eine in der Vossischen Zeitung, die andere, mehr an ein Fachpublikum gerichtet, in seinem eigenen Journal Iris im Gebiete der Tonkunst. Obwohl Rellstab in der ersten Rezension von der „Wichtigkeit der mancherlei neuen Kunsterscheinungen“ sprach,60 die in den drei Konzerten zu hören gewesen seien, sah er die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ in musikalischer Hinsicht als partiell fragwürdig sowie in ihrer ästhetischen Intention als gescheitert an. Da es sich um die beiden einzigen ausführlichen kritischen Zeugnisse zu Mendelssohns Lebzeiten handelt,61 werden sie hier ausführlich wiedergegeben.

In der Vossischen Zeitung schrieb Rellstab, die Sinfonie sei „zur Feier des Reformationsfestes componirt. Die Introduktion, auf einen der schönsten Choräle unserer evangelischen Gemeinde gearbeitet, einige choralartige Sätze im Adagio und im letzten Stück, zeigen den Zusammenhang dieser Arbeit mit dem kirchlichen Feste. In den übrigen Sätzen würde sich derselbe jedoch nur schwer nachweisen lassen, und wir müssen es dem Componisten frei stellen wie er denselben in sich gestaltet. Für die Trefflichkeit des Musikstücks an sich gilt uns dies überhaupt wenig; diese fordert nur einen Zusammenhang der Arbeit in sich selbst, und diesen wird niemand abläugnen. Wir müssen es einem andern Orte aufbehalten ausführlicher auf Einzelnes einzugehen,

hier nur so viel, daß die Anlage großartig, die Durchführung meisterhaft zu nennen ist. Lieber wäre es uns jedoch wenn der Componist nicht so viel auf colossale, als auf schöne Grundzüge hielte, wenn er nicht so überreich instrumentierte, und endlich mehr den melodischen als den harmonischen, kühn combinirten Schönheiten das Uebergewicht verstattete. Auch zeigt er uns selten einen heitern Himmel; fast immer stürmt oder gewittert es. Doch ist es eine Eigenschaft der Jugend und des Frühlings sich in Extremen zu gefallen, und wir dürfen die beständigeren Tage vielleicht von der vorgerückteren Jahreszeit des Alters erwarten. Einige Anklänge an Webers Euryanthe (dritter Akt) und im Ganzen ein Nachbilden der Beethovenschen Formen aus dessen spätester Zeit können nicht unbemerkt bleiben.“62 Noch härter, da dem Werk letztlich die künstlerische Berechtigung absprechend, ist das Urteil in der zweiten Rezension: „Das Werk war zur Feier des Reformationsfestes geschrieben, und suchte sich daher mit diesem würdigen kirchlichen Ereigniß in Beziehung zu setzen. Ein auf den Choral ‚Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott‘ gebautes Adagio leitete ein; hierauf folgte ein sehr bewegtes, fast wildes Allegro, dessen Character uns jedoch keinen näheren Zusammenhang mehr mit der Feier zu haben schien.

Der von Zeit zu Zeit eintretende Cantus firmus machte die Verbindung der Musik mit dem großen Ereigniß. In den andern Sätzen waren es ebenfalls nur einige choralartige Stellen, aus denen sich eine deutliche Beziehung entnehmen ließ. Wir wollen dies dem Komponisten nicht zum Vorwurf machen, denn es kann niemals die Aufgabe der Musik seyn, eine Begebenheit die der reinen Welt des Gedankens fast allein angehört, auf sinnliche Weise darzustellen. Ihr ist nur die Welt der Gefühle geöffnet, und in dieser wieder entbehrt sie und soll sie aller bestimmteren, näheren Bezeichnungen entbehren. Diese schöne Verschleierung bildet ihr heiligstes Geheimniß, die höchste Macht ihrer romantischen Natur. Niemals ist uns ein Bestreben verkehrter erschienen, als das welches die musikalische Zeitung des Herrn Marx hatte,63 in jedem Musikstück einen bestimmten Gang v e r s t ä n d i g e r Gedanken nachweisen zu wollen, und so immer etwas Fremdes hinein oder heraus zu lesen. Allein wir glauben daß Herr Mendelssohn sich zu stark durch diese Ansicht habe influiren lassen, und daß die innere Unwahrheit derselben, die es hindert sie zur Wirklichkeit zu bringen, schädlich auf seine Leistungen wirkt. Das Musikstück mag ausnahmsweise sich wohl einmal eine Aufgabe stellen die außer ihm selbst liegt; aber einmal kann es dieselbe nicht durchweg festhalten, und zweitens muß es auch selbstständig ohne diesen fremden

XIX Kommentar bestehn und zu verstehn seyn. Wenn wir also ganz von dem Gedanken abgehen, daß jene Symphonie mit irgend einem kirchlichen Ereigniß in Verbindung stehe, so werden wir sagen müssen, daß sie reich an schön erfundenen Stellen, besonders in Betreff harmonischer und rhythmischer Wirkungen ist, daß das Ganze einen Meister in der Arbeit und eine ausgeschriebene Feder bekundet. Doch vermissen wir dagegen melodische Erfindung und ein klares Hervortreten und Gliedern der Theile.

Einige Anklänge an Euryanthe sollte der Komponist herauszubringen versuchen; auch wäre es uns lieber, wenn er mehr nach den schön ausgebildeten Formen Mozarts, als nach den colossaleren, aber minder harmonisch ausgeglichenen Beethovens, wie sie sich in dessen neuesten Werken darstellen, modellirte.“64 Wie sehr Mendelssohn auch immer betonte, dass ihm am Urteil von Rezensenten nichts gelegen sei, muss ihn diese doppelte Kritik des von ihm respektierten Rellstab doch sehr getroffen haben, zumal sie zeitlich mit anderen Enttäuschungen (vor allem der gescheiterten Bewerbung auf den Direktorenposten der Singakademie) und Schicksalsschlägen wie dem Tod dreier ihm nahestehender Personen (Goethe, Zelter, Eduard Ritz) zusammenfiel; all dies mündete in generelle Gefühle des Selbstzweifels und der Niedergeschlagenheit. Dass seine hier angestrebte spezifische Kombination von Monumentalität und poetischer Intention in der Nachfolge Beethovens auf so grundsätzliches Unverständnis stieß, ja dass dem Werk die innere Kohärenz – also das überhaupt Wichtigste – abgesprochen wurde, ist sicher nicht zu Unrecht als einer der Gründe angesehen worden, weswegen er die Sinfonie verwarf, und mag dazu beigetragen haben, dass der Komponist in dieser Zeit seine Einstellung zur Semantisierung von Instrumentalmusik neu zu überdenken begann.65 Mendelssohn kam zeitlebens aus eigenem Antrieb nie wieder auf die Sinfonie zurück, wurde aber noch gelegentlich wider Willen daran erinnert. Julius Rietz war wie erwähnt nach dem Tod seines Bruders Eduard im Jahr 1832 in den Besitz der ursprünglich in Weimar für Heinrich Dorn erstellten Abschrift gekommen; als Nachfolger Mendelssohns auf der Position des Städtischen Musikdirektors in Düsseldorf dirigierte er eine Aufführung der Sinfonie66 durch den Verein für Tonkunst am 7. Dezember 1837.67 In der Literatur wurde bisher davon ausgegangen, dass dies mit Billigung des Komponisten geschah, aber

es spricht nichts dafür, dass das der Fall war: Eine Partitur besaß Rietz ohnehin, und im erhaltenen Briefwechsel zwischen den beiden ist im Vorfeld von dem Vorhaben mit keinem Wort die Rede. Die erste nachweisliche Nachricht, die Mendelssohn von der Aufführung erhielt,68 ist Rietz’ Brief vom 5. Februar 1838, in dem es heißt: „Die Reformations-Sinfonie ist, wenn auch nicht unter dem Titel, aufgeführt und mit Beifall aufge­nomen wurden. Die Leute zerbrachen sich den Kopf, was sie wohl zu bedeuten habe, und ich hatte im Stillen meine Freude über die verschiedenen Muthmaßungen, hütete mich aber recht, das Rechte zu offenbaren. Es war grade, als die Erzbischöfliche Geschichte in der größten Gährung war, und da wäre es grade an der Zeit gewesen, den Leuten die Tendenz dieses Musikstücks klar zu machen! – Übrigens möchte ich es doch gern sehen, wenn Sie einmal mit einem, oder noch lieber mit ein Paar, recht ordentlicher Sinfonien dazwischenführen. Es thut wahrlich Noth!“69 Der Brief schweigt darüber, ob man sich im Vorfeld über die Aufführung verständigt hatte; Mendelssohns ebenso berühmte wie eilige Antwort eine Woche später spricht eher dagegen: „Eine oder vielmehr ein Paar Symphonieen zu schreiben habe ich mir für dies Jahr fest vorgenommen; gebe nun Gott daß sie so werden, wie ichs mir denken ud vorstellen, aber selten schreiben kann. Die Reform.Symph. kann ich gar nicht mehr ausstehn, möchte sie lieber verbrennen als irgend eines meiner Stücke, soll niemals herauskomen; Camacho Ouv. noch eher, aber doch auch kaum.“70 Mendelssohn sah es nicht gern, wenn seine Werke ohne vorherige Genehmigung aufgeführt wurden, zumal wenn es sich wie in diesem Fall um eine unrevidierte und damit ungültige Fassung handelte; aber mit seinem Freund Rietz wollte er sich deswegen offenbar auch nicht streiten, zumal der Briefwechsel des Jahres 1837 ohnehin von Spannungen zeugt, die Mendelssohn zu bereinigen bemüht war. Dies ist vergleichbar mit der Einstellung zur „Italienischen“ A-Dur-Sinfonie: Mendelssohn war zwar nicht begeistert davon, dass die Philharmonic Society in London das unrevidierte Werk in den 1830er Jahren noch mehrfach aufführte, aber er konnte und wollte auch nichts dagegen unternehmen. Andererseits weigerte er sich, die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ selbst publik zu machen – eine diesbezügliche Anfrage des Lemberger Musikdirektors Franz von Piatkowski beantwortete er entsprechend deutlich: „Die

XX Symphonie zur Feier des Reformationsfestes bedaure ich Ihnen nicht schicken zu können, da es eine so jugendliche Jugend­ arbeit ist, daß ich mich jetzt zuweilen wundre, daß ich sie nicht besser gemacht habe, und da ich sie also aus dem Gefängniß in meinem Schranke nicht entwischen lassen darf.“71 Darüber hinaus verdient nochmals Erwähnung, dass Rietz – offenbar aus eigenem Antrieb – den Titel unterschlug. Laut Rudolf Elvers mag der Grund hierfür eben die erwähnte „Gährung“ gewesen sein: Rietz vermied es, Öl ins Feuer der ‚Kölner Wirren‘ zu gießen, d. h. der sich Ende 1837 zuspitzenden Spannungen zwischen der preußischen Regierung im Rheinland und dem katholischen Erzbischof in Köln.72 Mendelssohn wird hierüber erleichtert gewesen sein, und seine Antwort an Rietz war immerhin scharf und deutlich genug, um weitere Düsseldorfer Aufführungen zu unterbinden. Die Distanzierung von der Sinfonie wird nochmals deutlich in einem weiteren Brief mehr als drei Jahre später, in dem Mendelssohn im Kontext einer generellen Kritik an Rietz’ Kompositionen exemplarisch seine Sinfonie heranzieht: „es ist mir in der Ouv. namentlich ein gewisser Geist, den ich selbst allzugut kenne, weil er nach meiner Meinung die Reformazionssymphonie hat mislingen lassen, und der sicher ud. unfehlbar durch vieles ud. verschiedenartiges Schaffen hinweggebannt werden kann. Wie nämlich die Franzosen durch Kartenkunststücke und Selbstquälerei ihre Gedanken interessant ud. hoch hinauf schrauben möchten, so glaube ich man kann, durch den natürlichen Abscheu vor diesem Wesen auch wieder ins andre Extrem gelangen, sich vor allem Pikanten ud. Üppigen so sehr zu fürchten, daß am Ende der musikalische Gedanke an sich nicht keck und interessant genug bleibt, daß statt jener Geschwüre eine Magerkeit entsteht – es ist der Gegensatz von den Jesuiterkirchen mit tausend Flittern, zu den Calvinischen mit 4 weißen Wänden, und die rechte Frömmigkeit kann in beiden sein – aber der rechte Weg ist doch zwischen beiden. – O Gott, verzeihn Sie den Predigtton; aber wie macht man sich über solche Sachen verständlich? – Die Grundgedanken in Ihrer Ouvertüre ud. meiner Reformaz.symphonie (beide haben darin ganz gleiche Eigenschaften, find’ ich) sind mehr bedeutend durch das was sie bedeuten, als an ud für sich: natürlich rede ich dem letzteren allein nicht das Wort, (denn das führt in die Franzosen) aber auch nicht dem erstern allein, sondern beide müssen sich verbinden ud. verschmelzen.“73

Postume Rezeption und Drucklegung Nach Mendelssohns Tod wurde Rietz zu einem seiner Nachlassverwalter, und es mag dessen Wissen um Mendelssohns diesbezügliche Skepsis geschuldet sein, dass die „Reformations-­ Sinfonie“ – im Unterschied etwa zur „Italienischen“, die bereits 1851 erschien – noch lange zurückgehalten wurde.74 Dieser Umstand wiederum avancierte wenige Jahre später zum Hauptgegenstand einer von George Alexander Macfarren initiierten publizistischen Kampagne in England, die eine moralische Pflicht der deutschen Herausgeber postulierte, die bislang unveröffentlichten Werke des Meisters freizugeben.

Macfarren legte diesen Anspruch in einem umfangreichen Essay in The Musical World vom Januar 1853 dar, der hier nur in kurzen Auszügen wiedergegeben werden kann: „The question now becomes very general, as it is perfectly natural, how many unpublished works has Mendelssohn left? […] Very many more than double the number of the whole amount of his works that have been at present printed, both before and since his death! […]

I say, there needs no extraordinary power to explain who are they that defraud us, the world, of the property which is our right, the property, common to all the world, of a great man’s thoughts, since what is familiar to many needs not be mystery to any.“75 Die Schuldigen sind schnell identifiziert: das Komitee der Nachlassverwalter, von Macfarren benannt als Ferdinand David, Moritz Hauptmann, Ignaz Moscheles und Julius Rietz.

Nach zwei weiteren Seiten Empörungsrhetorik („Why should a few, in this respect narrow-minded individuals, from mistaken zeal, from a disappreciation of the merits of the works over which they hold control, and of the universal interest in them, withhold these, their property, from all the world?“76) wird als Kronzeuge für dieses Unrecht gegenüber der Musikwelt die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ – das umfangreichste der zurückgehaltenen Werke – ins Feld geführt: „Among the unpublished works is a Symphony on a very extensive plan, written to celebrate the centenary of the Reformation, in which the Corale of Luther, ‚Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott‘ forms a very important feature. It is said that Mendelssohn held this work in very high esteem; that he suppressed it at the period of its composition, because at this time Meyerbeer produced his Huguenots, in which the same theme of Luther is most laboriously trifled

XXI with, and he would not submit his work to such a comparison as the ignorant would, in all certainty, institute between it and this composition, which, whatever its merits, would be a wholly unworthy and unnatural rival to anything that Mendelssohn ever could have produced; and it is said that he always intended, when the appropriate opportunity should arrive, to bring out this Reformation Symphony as one of the works upon which he was most confident to rest his reputation.“77 Ungeachtet der Berechtigung oder des Wahrheitsgehaltes von Macfarrens Pamphlet schlug die Angelegenheit Wellen; drei Wochen später druckte Macfarren eine Gegendarstellung Charles Edward Horsleys ab, in der wiederum die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ im Zentrum steht: „The great error, however, into which your authority has fallen, is with regard to the ‚Reformation Symphony.‘ This was written before Mendelssohn went to Rome in 1827 [sic], and very shortly after the Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture. It never was a favourite with him, and on playing it over to our mutual friend, Klingemann, they both agreed that it was not equal to the then published works, and it was Mendelssohn’s strongest wish that it should never be heard or published.“78 Der Herausgeber der Musical World, James William Davison, intervenierte seinerseits in der folgenden Woche zugunsten Macfarrens,79 unter Einschluss weiterer Repliken von Horsley und Macfarren selbst, aber vor allem mit einem Brief von Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, der von der Diskussion erfahren hatte und sich nun selbst wie folgt zu Wort meldete: „As concerns the laying by of the Reformation Symphony, this work of Felix Mendelssohn’s early youth (the composition of which occurred long before that of the symphony in A, and which Felix Mendelssohn never once performed anywhere in concurrence with his own judgment), after conscientious examination was not considered suitable for publication.“80 In der Zwischenzeit hatte die Philharmonic Society versucht, durch eine Anfrage an Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy direkt an die Sinfonie zu kommen. Jules Benedict, dem offenbar diese Aufgabe zugefallen war, konnte allerdings dem Sekretär der Society George Hogarth nur eine abschlägige Antwort übermitteln, die sich in englischer Übersetzung durch Benedict im Archiv der Society erhalten hat: „To the request you have kindly undertaken on behalf of the Directors of the Philharmonic So-

ciety, I am unfortunately obliged to give a negative answer. Tho’ I should willingly endeavour to render service to those honorable gentlemen – it seems to me not proper (not just – the German words are nicht billig –) to present a work to the public – which the author himself had laid aside long ago – which he had performed no where – and of which as of an involontary juvenile production he spoke with contempt – I hope – this reason will serve as a satisfactory apology to that much esteemed Society, which has always shown so much kindness to my husband. With sincere friendship Your’s truly Cecile Mendelssohn Bartholdy“.81 Auch dieser Vorstoß trug also keine Früchte, zumal Mendelssohns Witwe zu diesem Zeitpunkt fast jegliche Kontrolle über den Nachlass ihres Mannes verloren hatte.82 Andere Zeitungen kommentierten die Angelegenheit ebenfalls, entweder Macfarren kritisierend (wie das Athenaeum83) oder aus amüsierter Distanz (wie das Dwight’s Journal of Music84 in Boston). Die Angelegenheit verlief erwartungsgemäß im Sande, da aus der Sicht der deutschen Nachlassverwalter kein Handlungsbedarf bestand, aber es handelt sich doch um eine bezeichnende Episode, sowohl was die immense Zuneigung der englischen Musikwelt zu Mendelssohn betrifft als auch die Einstellung zur Publikation nachgelassener Werke des Komponisten im Allgemeinen. Selbst Johann Christian Lobe sah sich bemüßigt, die Affäre in seinen Fliegenden Blättern zu kommentieren, wiewohl erst 1855.85 Bemerkenswert ist sein Resümee der Londoner Ereignisse vor allem am Ende, wo Lobe die Behauptung von Jules Benedict referiert, er „kenne die ‚Reformations-Sinfonie‘ und erkläre, sie s e i Mendelssohns würdig“, wohingegen der Autor selbst behauptet: „Die ‚Reformations-Sinfonie‘ hat mir Mendelssohn selbst einmal vorgelegt, und ich muß allerdings auch erklären, daß sie eine unreife Jugendarbeit ist.“86 Wie mittlerweile mehrfach belegt ist, nahm Lobe es mit der Wahrheit freilich nicht immer genau87 und neigte auch dazu, seine Freundschaft zu Mendelssohn (wie die zu anderen bekannten Komponisten) zu übertreiben, so dass der Wahrheitsgehalt dieser Erinnerung fraglich bleiben muss.

Erst 1867 wandten sich die Nachlassverwalter nach fünfzehnjähriger Pause wieder der Edition unpublizierter Werke zu, und nun war auch die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ an der Reihe. Ein Brief von Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy an Rietz vom 13. Sep-

XXII tember 1867 ist für die Publikation in vielerlei Hinsicht aufschlussreich und wird daher hier vollständig wiedergegeben: „Verehrtester Herr, Da ich durch die Herrn Breitkopf u Härtel erfahren habe, daß Sie das in Ihren Händen befindliche Exemplar der Ref=Symphonie nicht gern selbst zum Stich geben möchten, so wollte ich Sie hiermit bitten mir eine Abschrift gütigst in Dresden besorgen lassen zu wollen und mir später die gehabten Auslagen mitzutheilen, damit ich Sie [sic; statt sie] trage. Wenn die Kopie gemacht ist so bitte ich Sie dieselbe dem Herrn Simrock in Bonn zuzusenden, welchem ich den Verlag übertragen habe. Mit der Versicherung aufrichtiger Hochachtung Ganz Ergebenst K Mendelssohn Bartholdy | PS. Für England haben die Herrn Ewer den Verlag, denen ich durch meine Schwester eine Copie die von Ihrem Autograf genomen ist übergeben ließ.“88 Hieraus lässt sich erstens ablesen, dass Rietz eine Anfrage des Verlages Breitkopf & Härtel hinsichtlich einer Publikation abschlägig beschieden hatte; dies mag noch immer der Erinnerung an Mendelssohns ablehnende Haltung geschuldet sein wie auch eigener Skepsis, ob das Werk wirklich denselben Rang habe wie die übrigen Sinfonien. Letzteres wird durch einen Tagebucheintrag Rietz’ vom 16. April 1867 bestätigt, in dem er über einen Besuch von Mendelssohns Sohn Paul berichtet, mit dem er die Auswahl eventuell noch zu publizierender Werke diskutierte: „Abend der dicke Paul dort. Die Herausgabe des Nachlasses abermals durch[ge]sprochen. Schien auf unsrer Seite, wollte oder konte aber s. Bruder Carl nicht preisgeben u. sprach sich daher nicht präcis aus. Vorgespielt: die von Carl gesandten Lieder ohne Worte (keines gefiel entschieden; die besten darunter sind höchstens passabel) dann Lieder mit Worten (,o könnt’ ich zu dir fliegen‘ mißfiel; man glaubte, es sei gar nicht von Felix, was es aber doch ist) endlich die Reformationssinfonie aus der Partitur; tant bien que possible. Bei Anerkennung von vielem Guten mußte selbst der alte Paul die Unfertigkeit, das Mißverhältniß von Form und Inhalt bekennen. Resultat für die Herausgabe gleich Null.“89 Wie bereits aus dem oben zitierten Brief geht zweitens auch hieraus hervor, dass Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy an der Pub­ likation weiterer Kompositionen seines Vaters gelegen war, und so war er in Sachen „Reformations-Sinfonie“ selbst tätig geworden und hatte Simrock den Verlag übertragen. Ferner erfahren wir, dass Rietz nunmehr im Besitz des Autographs

war (zuzüglich zu der Abschrift für Dorn aus dem Erbe seines Bruders), dass aber eine weitere Abschrift aus dem Nachlass Mendelssohn existierte, die über Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdys Schwester – offenbar die in London lebende Marie Benecke – dem Verlag Novello, Ewer & Co. überlassen worden war, um dort als Stichvorlage für die englische Erstausgabe zu dienen.

Dadurch war Rietz natürlich in Zugzwang, und so erschienen ohne große weitere Verzögerungen im Frühjahr 1868 Partitur und Stimmen in Deutschland90 wie in England.91 Die Verleger stellten bei dieser Gelegenheit auch die Weichen für das unselige Missverständnis, die „Reformations-Sinfonie“ als Mendelssohns fünften und letzten Beitrag zur Gattung anzusehen: Auf dem originalen Titelblatt der deutschen Erstausgabe liest man Reformations- | Sinfonie | Nr. 5. | componirt im Jahre 1830 | von | Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy | OP. 107. | N.o 36 der nachgelas­ senen Werke | NEUE FOLGE; die englische Version, die eine direkte Übersetzung der deutschen ist, beginnt mit SYM­PHONY | N.o 5 | (The Reformation). Schon die „Italienische“, die der Komponist eigentlich als seine „Zweite“ ansah, segelt ja seit ihrer Publikation als 4. Sinfonie in der öffentlichen Rezeption unter falscher Flagge; fast noch irreführender aber ist die Zählung der d-Moll-Sinfonie von 1830, die Mendelssohn offenbar innerlich verwarf, bevor sie in seinem Bewusstsein überhaupt eine Ordinalzahl erhalten konnte, und die eben seinen ersten Versuch in der großen sinfonischen Form darstellt und nicht seinen letzten.

Mit der Abschrift für Ewer92 hat es aber noch eine weitere Bewandtnis. Während sie letztlich doch nicht als Vorlage der englischen Publikation diente, die – vermutlich um die Kosten des Neustichs zu sparen – auf der Basis der Simrock’schen Platten erfolgte, muss sie schon vor der eigentlichen Drucklegung in Umlauf gekommen sein, da bereits Ende 1867 und Anfang 1868 eine Reihe von Aufführungen der Sinfonie in London und Liverpool erfolgte: die erste unter der Leitung von August Manns im Crystal Palace am 30. November 1867,93 zwei weitere durch Joseph Barnby in St. James’ Hall am 12. Dezember 1867 und am 29. Januar 186894 sowie außerhalb Londons durch Jules Benedict in Liverpool ebenfalls im Januar 1868.95 Als Ausgangsmaterial dieser Aufführungen kommt nur diese Abschrift in Frage, zumal sie eindeutig als Dirigierpartitur diente, denn sie enthält eine Reihe von Eintragungen einer englischen Hand

XXIII in Blaustift.96 Zahlreiche weitere englische Aufführungen im Verlauf des Jahres 1868 – viele davon wohl nunmehr auf der Basis des gedruckten Materials – machen zusätzlich deutlich, wie sehnsüchtig die Publikation des Werkes hier erwartet worden war, und die Berichte ebenso wie die Rezensionen der gedruckten Partitur sind positiv bis hymnisch: Davisons Urteil, dass es sich um „a work which is as unique in form and conception as it is transcendent in musical beauty and masterly execution“ handele, ist für die britische Rezeption typisch.97 Das Echo auf die deutsche Publikation war da wesentlich verhaltener – verhaltener selbst als in Frankreich, wo die Sinfonie am 22. März in den Concerts populaires von Jules Pasdeloup erklang und in der Woche darauf gleich wiederholt werden musste:98 Aufführungen sind weit weniger zahlreich, und neben positiven Urteilen stehen auch solche, die konzedieren, dass es sich bei der Sinfonie zwar um eine Bereicherung des Repertoires aus der Feder eines bedeutenden Komponisten handele, sie aber nicht zu seinen erstrangigen Werken zähle.99 Der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik war sie weder Ankündigung noch Rezension wert. Bis heute ist es der „Reformations-Sinfonie“ nicht gelungen, aus dem Schatten ihrer Schwesterwerke, der „Italienischen“ und der „Schottischen“ Sinfonie, herauszutreten. *** Eine Edition wie die vorliegende ist nicht denkbar ohne die Kooperation vieler Institutionen und Personen. Der Herausgeber dankt zunächst allen Bibliotheken und ihren Mitarbeitern, die ausführliche Einsicht in die von ihnen aufbewahrten

Introduction Inspiration and Genesis The years 1829 and 1830 can justifiably be called the ‘Symphony years’ of the young Mendelssohn. After the twelve string symphonies of the composer as pupil (MWV N 1–12, composed between 1821 and 1823), Mendelssohn had completed his first symphony for full orchestra, the Symphony in C minor (MWV N 13), in 1824. This work was revised in 1829 and was first published in London in 1830 without an opus number, subsequently in 1834 by Schlesinger as op. 11; it became quite popular, especially through performances under the composer’s own direction.1 Nevertheless, it was not a ‘great’ symphony in a Beethovenian sense. This was less a question of duration2 than one of artistic ambition, given the genre’s newly acquired lofty aspirations; according to Carl Dahlhaus, “Beethoven had transformed the symphony into a monumental genre, […] a symphony manifested compositional ambitions of the highest order.”3 This implied, aside from a large scale and a large orchestra, above all the aspiration to turn symphonies into highly idealised poetic works of art, into “public speeches addressed at humanity,” as Adorno put it.4 As Beethoven had demonstrated, such an intent did not necessitate imply an explicit programme; poetic ideas could manifest themselves in non-verbal, topical associations as well as in intra-musical coherence (or indeed in the mutual interaction between the two).5 Of the four sympho-

nies that Mendelssohn began in the years 1829 and 1830, the “Scottish” and the “Italian” (MWV N 16 und N 18) embody this tension between extroversive and introversive semiosis most clearly: in both cases, the composer retracted the explicit topographic assignation by way of a title, and left it to the listener to interpret the topicality of the music in an appropriate fashion.6 While the “Revolution Symphony” which was occasionally mentioned in the same period remained at the ideas stage which makes it impossible to draw conclusions as to its programmaticism,7 the “Reformation” symphony is in any case more semantically explicit than its two sister works – which appears to be the main reason for the ambiguous attitude later displayed by composer and critics towards the work.8 As elsewhere, Mendelssohn drew on external stimuli for his primary inspiration: while these stimuli were primarily topographic in nature for the “Scottish” and “Italian” symphonies, the sources for the “Reformation” symphony were religious and historical. The unmistakeable point of departure is the Lutheran chorale: besides “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A Mighty Fortress Our God Is”), the draft for the transition to the finale, later discarded, had additionally contained the melody to “Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr” (“All Glory be to God on High”). Other sources of inspiration include stile antico vocal polyphony (in the literature, Palestrina is often named as the model, but Mendelssohn’s polyphony ‘in the old style’ in fact relies less on actual quotation

XXV than on a Romantic reimagination of strict counterpoint projected backwards onto the Renaissance9), and Baroque counterpoint in the tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach. A direct quote is the famous Dresden Amen, the responsorial formula from the liturgy of the catholic court of Saxony in Dresden, later reused amongst others by Richard Wagner in his Parsifal.10 Until now, it has remained a matter of speculation how Mendelssohn might have come to know this formula, but it turns out that during a visit to Dresden in 1819, he had in fact attended a service in the Hofkirche.11 The quote is thus apparently based on an actual listening experience – an experience which is directly associated with the catholic liturgy.

The immediate impetus for the composition of the symphony is usually seen in the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession on 25 June 1830. This anniversary of one of the most important foundational writings of Lutheranism, presented by Philipp Melanchthon to the Diet of Augsburg, was celebrated in many parts of Germany in grand style, as an important statement in the context of on-going confessional debates, for example regarding the positioning of Lutheranism within the united Evangelical church in Prussia.12 And Mendelssohn did write in a letter to Carl Klingemann in February 1830 that he was working “on the symphony for the Reformation festival (there is one this year, to celebrate the foundation of the Augsburg Confession).”13 This specific occasion, however, seems to have been attached to the piece retrospectively, rather than serving as the initial inspiration for it. For one, as Judith Silber has shown, the symphony cannot have been an official commission for the Berlin celebrations as those were not announced until

4 April 1830; for another, the standard genre for such occasions was not the symphony, but the festive choral work (such as Mendelssohn’s own “Dürer Festival Music” MWV D 1 or the “Humboldt Cantata” MWV D 2); and such were indeed the works commissioned.14 As late as 5 June 1830, after the completion of the first version, Lea Mendelssohn wrote to her son, thus linking the composition with the festival in retrospect: “Talking about the symphony! Have you read the King’s order with regard to the festivities? When I saw it, darling! I wondered whether this might not be an appropriate occasion to dedicate it to the King?”15 Mendelssohn’s reply16 likewise indicates that the memorial day may have played a role in the work’s genesis, if perhaps only as a motivation to finish it by a certain date; but that the composer could and did not hope for an actual performance in the context of the Berlin festivities.

What is more, the composer had been contemplating a Symphony in D minor on the topic of the Reformation for quite a while, indeed before his departure for England in April 1829.

This can be deduced from a letter from his older sister dated 27 May 1829 from Berlin where she wrote about the symphony as a well-known project: “Just one more thing: what about the D minor Symphony, are you thinking about it?”17 At the same time, Mendelssohn himself made reference to a symphony on the Luther chorale – he had been invited to participate in the Birmingham Music Festival in October of the same year: “If I have got time and inclination before then, maybe I will write a new piece, on Luther’s celebrated Hymn: Ein veste Burg ist unser Gott […].”18 Carl Klingemann, in turn, reacted to Fanny Mendelssohn’s letter on 7 July: “So I look forward to what is

XXVI about to come, particularly given what I know about the symphony.”19 Further below in the same letter, Klingemann further predicts that Mendelssohn will make a name for himself throughout Europe through “the Order of the Golden Spur by the pope, something else for a composition on ‘A Mighty Fortress’, and the success of an opera at the Court Theatre of Lapland […].”20 The jocular tone of the letter notwithstanding, this also demonstrates that the integration of the chorale into the symphony was firmly planned at this point, i.e. that this was a “Reformation” symphony; as regards the letter cited above, it further shows that the specific occasion of the Augsburg Confession anniversary was news to Klingemann while he was already aware of the poetic theme of the symphony more broadly.

Harder to interpret is Mendelssohn’s comment in a letter to his sisters on occasion of a visit to a lead mine in Wales, but it incontrovertibly confirms that the music on “A Mighty Fortress” and the D minor Symphony were one and the same project: “I will send my finished violin quartet along soon, and for the completion of my Reformation Symphony I was recently 500 feet below ground, possibly not without success.”21 In any case, completion of the symphony was a pipe dream at this point; here as elsewhere, Mendelssohn’s optimism was misplaced. On the contrary: a week later, he announced that “here I intend to begin my Reformation Symphony, God willing.”22 This intention, however, was thwarted by a knee injury suffered shortly afterwards which kept him bedridden in London for two months; it was not until after his return home to Berlin in early December that he properly began composing again.

But now, the D minor Symphony did top the list of priorities.

In the letter to Klingemann of 10 February 1830 cited above, Mendelssohn expressed the hope to be able to “leave Berlin at the end of the month, when I will have finished my D minor Symphony – I am busy working on its first Allegro. But it will take longer than I thought.”23 The scepticism here expressed was well-founded: in the subsequent months, much mention is

made of work on the symphony, but little of progress. Further delays were caused by an attack of the measles and by the experiment described by Eduard Devrient to notate the full score of the first movement bar by bar: “It is well known that composers enter those instruments first into the system of the score which carry the principal musical ideas, then to add only the basses and single prominent instrumental effects, and thus to sketch out the structure of the piece, which they do not complete with all parts until later. Felix, on the other hand, undertook to notate the finished composition in all systems from top to bottom, bar by bar. To be sure, it was his habit to write down his compositions only when they were completely finished in his head and when he had already played them to his closest confidantes on the piano, but nevertheless it remained a huge feat of memory.”24 It is impossible to verify this claim in the autograph, and the claim that Mendelssohn always had his compositions “completely finished in his head” is surely part of an idealised nineteenth-century image of the musical genius (if one which, for Mendelssohn, persists until today); this needs to be qualified insofar as substantial sketches and drafts are extant for many of his works which bear witness to a much more tortuous genesis.

Still, Julius Schubring reports a similar process for the notation of the score to the “Trumpet Overture” (MWV P 2) written in 1826.25 In any case, the composer remarked to Devrient that “this work was so onerous that he would never repeat it, and he stopped at the first movement of the symphony.”26 Not until the spring of 1830 was completion in sight. This is apparent from a series of letters exchanged within the Leipziger Strasse no. 3 in March and April:27 “the time which I have got left here I will stay in my room and keep busy writing, in order to make progress on the symphony and the piece for the Academy” (14 March);28 “I have worked on my symphony today” (around 15 March);29 “I hope to finish the third movement of my symphony tomorrow (you can see I have been busy)” (20 March);30 “so I postponed my journey and started another larger work,

XXVII that is a symphony for orchestra, on which I spent much time every day; it is not yet quite finished, but I hope to be able to complete it before my departure as I have already reached the beginning of the final movement.” (9 April);31 “After my journey I have […] started on a symphony for full orchestra, and I am currently working on the last movement” (11 April);32 “for of the great symphony on which I am working only the first three movements are finished” (13 April);33 “I wish you knew my new symphony. When I return I will conduct it, for o u r entertainment only; the first movement is a fat bristly animal, to be recommended as medicine against a weak stomach” (15 April);34 and finally “I am just working on the last movement of my symphony, and am therefore in a great rush” (25 April).35 Eventually, the date of completion is recorded as 12 May in the score – one day before the composer’s departure on his journey towards Southern Germany and Italy.

In any case, the work retained the label “Reformation” symphony. This is seen most clearly in the playful (or ironic) question by the composer to his older sister what he was supposed to call his work: “Do collect votes on which title I should choose: Reformation Symphony, Confession Symphony, Symphony for a Church Feast (for the pope), Children’s Symphony, or as you like; write to me about it, and send an intelligent suggestion in place of all the silly ones.”36 One can tell from the reference to the pope in the context of such a quintessentially Lutheran work that the question was not meant seriously; additionally, the “Children’s Symphony” refers to the playful pieces Mendelssohn wrote for Christmas of 1827 and 1828 as well as for his parents’ silver wedding anniversary on 26 December 1829 (MWV P 4, P 6, P 8), the latter apparently replaced by the ‘Liederspiel’ Aus der Fremde MWV L 6.37 It is clear nevertheless from the way the letter is phrased that Mendelssohn would have considered serious suggestions for a change of title, more importantly, it is equally clear that he never contemplated presenting the work to the public without any title whatsoever (in contrast to the “Italian” and “Scottish” symphonies). The recipient of the letter was having none of this, however: “I look

forward to the promised score of the symphony [and] its envisioned publication – which under a different title than that of Reformation Symphony would look to me as strange as if you were called Petzold all of a sudden.”38 Correspondingly, the composer’s inscription of the autograph reads “Symphony for the Celebration of the Church Reformation”.

By the time of completion it was too late for a performance in Berlin, whether for the anniversary festivities or another occasion, and Mendelssohn was obviously not prepared to postpone his departure further. This was much to the regret of his family which stayed behind, particularly given the (from their point of view) inferior music that was performed instead: choruses by Eduard Grell. Dripping with irony given the impossibility of her suggestion, Fanny Hensel wrote on 5 June: “Publish your Reformation Symphony, straightaway; the Confession Festival is on 25 June, it would need to be out by then.”39 In a similar vein, her sister Rebecka commented shorty afterwards: “I wish there were better music to be heard at the upcoming Confession Festival than Mantius in St. Nicholas’ Church and a composition by Grell. Fanny said, almost too pathetically, that you would experience the most beautiful festivities in Bavaria for the same occasion. Oh dear, I will probably stay at home, and think about your symphony, and if Heaven grants us a clear day, the church is there […].”40 And on the day itself we read in a similar fashion: “You in your catholic country will have forgotten completely the occasion at which your symphony should have been played: that is today, and here. You say I am afraid that you will turn into a catholic, my dear child, but that would sadden me very little; even if you become a Turk, you will remain my Felix, whom I love more than most others. – But today is the Confession Festival, and they have played fanfares from the towers because of it.”41 In the meantime, the composer had not been idle on his journey, and almost succeeded in getting the work performed on his first stop in Leipzig. Heinrich Dorn, music director at the court theatre there, who knew Mendelssohn well from his time in Berlin, had offered to put the symphony on the programme

XXVIII of the theatre concert for Pentecost on 31 May.42 Mendelssohn enthusiastically agreed and promised to provide Dorn with a manuscript copy of the score since he himself would have left for Weimar by then.43 His letter to Dorn of 2 June, however, demonstrates that this copy was not completed in time, not least since Heinrich Marschner, at the time also resident in Leipzig, had suggested further revisions which had fallen on fertile soil with the composer. This letter, posted already from Weimar, is telling in a number of ways and will therefore be quoted extensively: “Enclosed is my symphony, very punctually and within the agreed time. I hope it can still be copied out, rehearsed and performed by the day before yesterday. But seriously, I have to apologise profusely for not having been able to fulfil my promise; you had predicted that from the beginning, but that is impossible since I was fully determined, started to make the necessary corrections during the first days of my stay here, and plunged myself so deeply into the revisions that I had to add a number of things in the last movement and remove much old material. Even thus, there would have been enough time; but then the promised copyist jilted me day after day and if I did not have to leave town first thing tomorrow morning, I believe it would still not be finished because threats about my departure and suchlike have no effect here anymore as I have stayed here for almost a fortnight instead of four days.

Nevertheless, I am sending you the symphony anyway, first to ask you to have another look and also to show it to our friend Marschner to see whether the cuts in the last movement are sufficient (as I hope they will), further to ask you to send the same when you no longer need it (which I fear will be very soon, alas) to my sister, Madame Hensel, Leipziger Strasse no. 3 in Berlin, either through somebody who happens to go there or by mail without postage, as I have promised her a copy and already announced it in a letter. Excuse the trouble I am causing you, but until the day before yesterday I always thought it might perhaps still be possible for the copy to reach you in time, and since I had resolved to send it I cannot do otherwise. Perhaps there is even a positive side to the delay preventing the performance; in retrospect, it occurred to me that the chorale and all the catholicisms would have appeared odd in the theatre; and a Reformation Symphony at Pentecost might have sounded strange.”44

Leipzig also held celebrations for the anniversary of the Augsburg Confession from 25 to 27 June, but again the symphony does not seem to have been considered for those (the possibility is not even mentioned by either Mendelssohn or Dorn); Bach cantatas were used as the music for them.45 Dorn did send the score to Fanny Hensel in Berlin as requested; it later passed into the possession of Eduard Ritz and after his death into that of his brother Julius Rietz. The manuscript is of utmost importance for the genesis of the symphony as it precisely documents the status of the composition in late May 1830, proving that practically all more substantial revisions (with the exception of the end of the coda in the finale) had already been implemented by this time, rather than during the final preparation of the score for the premiere in November 1832 (see the Critical Report).

Even in catholic Munich, Mendelssohn kept thinking about the symphony. When watching the Corpus Christi procession on 10 June, he further specified its poetic idea: “I wish you had been with me the other day when I was walking amongst the crowds during the procession, looking around a great deal and feeling very contented with myself because of the first movements of the church symphony, as I would not have expected the contrast between the first two movements to work so well even today. But if you had heard the whole crowd chanting prayers very monotonously, with a hoarse priest shouting in between, or another reading the Gospel and cheerful military music with trumpets blasting right through the middle, and how the colourfully painted banners fluttered back and forth, and how the choirboys were draped with golden tassels – I think you would have praised me as I did myself and was delighted.”46 More importantly, however, the symphony at the same time came even closer to being performed than in Leipzig: the music direction of the royal court had expressed interest in the C minor Symphony as well as the “Reformation Symphony”. “The whole orchestra will probably assemble one of these mornings to play through both my symphonies; because they have asked me to have them for the concerts next winter,” the composer wrote to his family on 27 June.47 Soon after, the two works were indeed played through on the piano in a small circle: “Yesterday morning there was a musical matinée in my rooms: Baron Poissl [the director of the court music], Kapellmeister Stuntz,

XXIX Bärmann, Vespermann, and several young musicians; I had to play my Hora twice and then my two symphonies for them, and I was very pleased to see how impressed they were with all these works, and how they turned serious during the Reformation Symphony in a very different way than during the other one. There will be a rehearsal for full orchestra, and that will be pretty; they agreed that when the band is assembled, I should first play the symphony for them on the piano, so they could hear what I had in mind; I liked that idea very well.”48 In the end, however, the orchestra was more interested in the C minor Symphony – in the letters of the following weeks, only one symphony is being mentioned. And that can only refer to the earlier work of 1824 as only it was eventually rehearsed by the full orchestra even though no public performance resulted either.

During Mendelssohn’s travels through Italy, organising a performance was out of the question, and thus the next opportunity arose one year later, yet again in Munich, where the composer put on a charity concert on 17 October 1831. Once more, the choice was between the C minor Symphony and the “Reformation” symphony, and once more, the earlier work was preferred.

At the outset, the composer still hoped to have enough time to rehearse the longer and more difficult “Reformation” symphony: “[…] also, I am very much looking forward to conduct an orchestra again; they have promised me two rehearsals and if that is indeed the case, I will do my D minor symphony.”49 This time was apparently not forthcoming, however, and thus we hear a few weeks later that “the C minor symphony will open the concert.”50 The next opportunity came about in Paris in December of the same year: Mendelssohn was increasingly impatient to hear his new work, but on the other hand he was doubtful whether the “fat bristly animal”51 was the best calling card for a Paris audience: “the question now is what to do first because one has to introduce oneself with a symphony, and only afterwards an overture can follow; the D minor symphony is no good to start with, and the old C minor bores me. This means that I will

probably have to compose that in A major and perform that one.”52 The completion of the A major symphony (the “Italian”) was a long way off, needless to say, and the C minor Symphony was also set aside “as the piece had been played in London so often.”53 Thus, the composer and the director of the concerts at the Conservatoire, François Habeneck, did in the end agree to tackle – besides the overture to A Midsummernight’s Dream (MWV P 3) – the “Reformation” symphony,54 and in early February the orchestral parts were written out.55 The great anticipation which shines through in a number of letters was, however, followed by even greater disillusionment. The performance was postponed time and again, and as late as 17 March 1832, with the departure from Paris imminent, we still read: “On the 8th, I will sit in the mail coach going to London, but I will have heard my symphony in the Conservatoire before then.”56 It is telling that we hear of the only playthrough of the symphony not through the composer, but through his friend Ferdinand Hiller who lived in Paris at the time: “The end of Mendelssohn’s relationship with that splendid orchestra, however, was unpleasant, indeed hurtful. His Reformation Symphony was going to be performed. It was played through in a rehearsal at which I was not present: according to our young friends, the musicians were not impressed by the work and it was not performed. ‘It is too scholastic,’ said Cuvillon to me, ‘too many fugatos, too little melody’, and other remarks of the same kind. To a certain degree, the composer must have come to share this judgment, as he did not publish the work. But at the time he treasured it, and the way in which it was silently removed did hurt him in any case.”57 Whether Mendelssohn ever knew the reasons for the rejection of his symphony or whether he was hurt by the mere fact of it is not known, but it is telling that he did not mention the symphony again with a single word for the rest of his stay in Paris. On top of everything else, cholera had broken out and all public concerts were cancelled. But it seems clear that his hitherto unbroken enthusiasm for the work – as late as January 1832 he had contemplated finding a publisher for it58 –

XXX had been dampened by the persisting lack of success in getting it performed; this is further corroborated by the fact (already pointed out by Judith Silber) that he did not make any further attempts to publicise the work while in London from late April to late June 1832. Given his popularity there it is inconceivable that that should have met with any obstacles had an attempt been made, but the work is not even mentioned during his entire stay here.59 Premiere, Early Reception and Rejection The work’s premiere thus had to wait until after Mendelssohn’s return to Berlin where he tried to establish himself as a professional musician in his hometown – an attempt that was eventually to fail. Aside from a number of other public appearances, he organised in the winter of 1832 three concerts in the Sing­ akademie for the benefit of the widows of musicians in the court orchestra. That the first of these, on 15 November, was opened with the (once again, if only slightly, revised) “Reformation” symphony is a true statement of intent: Mendelssohn wanted to be perceived as a composer of “great” symphonies in the succession of Beethoven. Nothing is known about how the audience reacted to the performance; but the leading (and arch-conservative) critic Ludwig Rellstab devoted no less than two detailed reviews to it, one in the general-interest Vossische Zeitung, the other, directed more at a readership of connoisseurs, in his own music journal Iris im Gebiete der Tonkunst. Although Rellstab conceded in the former review the “importance of the new artistic phenomena” which had been heard in the three concerts,60 he had his doubts about the musical value of the “Reformation” symphony and considered its aesthetic intention to be fundamentally misguided. As the two reviews constitute the only substantial critical engagement with work during Mendelssohn’s lifetime,61 they will be quoted extensively. In the Vossische Zeitung, Rellstab wrote that the symphony had been “composed to celebrate the feast of the Reformation. The introduction, based upon one of the most beautiful chorales of our evangelical community, as well as some chorale-like passages in the Andante and in the last movement, demonstrate the connection of this work with the church feast. In the remaining movements, the same [connection] would seem to be more difficult to ascertain, and we must leave it to the composer how he has construed it in his

imagination. For the success of the composition, this matters little in any case; for this, only an inner coherence of the work is required, and nobody will deny that. We have to leave the extensive discussion of details to another venue, and limit ourselves here to state that the disposition is grand, and the execution masterful. We would have preferred it if the composer had striven less for colossal and more for beautiful characterisation, if he had not used such over-rich instrumentation, if he had finally given more preference to melodic beauty than to that of bold harmonic combinations. In addition, he seldom shows us a bright sky; almost always, we hear gales and thunderstorms.

But it is a characteristic of youth to wallow in extremes, and we may perhaps expect more consistent days with the progressive seasoning of age. Some allusions to Weber’s Euryanthe (third act) and in general an imitation of Beethovenian forms from his latest period cannot go unnoticed.”62 Even harsher is the verdict of the second review – in it, Rellstab questions the aesthetic raison-d’être of the symphony as a whole: “The work was written in celebration of the Reformation feast, and thus strove to forge a link to this venerable ecclesiastical occasion. An Adagio based on the chorale ‘Ein feste Burg’ formed the introduction; it was followed by a highly agitated, almost wild Allegro whose character, however, seemed to us to have no direct link to the feast. Only the cantus firmus which reappeared from time to time established the connection to the great event. In the other movements a clear relationship could only be derived from occasional chorale-like passages. We do not like to criticise the composer for this, as it can never be the task of music to represent by sensual means an event which almost entirely belongs to the pure realm of thought. Only the realm of emotions is open to it, and in this it lacks – and must lack – any more explicit and detailed definitions. This beautiful concealment is its holiest secret, the highest power of its romantic nature. Never has an ambition seemed to us more misguided than that pursued by the musical journal of Herr Marx,63 to strive to demonstrate a definite succession of rational thought in every piece of music, and thus to read into it or out of it something foreign each time. We merely think that Herr Mendelssohn has let himself be influenced too strongly by this view, and that the intrinsic untruthfulness of it, which prevents it from becoming real, has been detrimental to his achievements.

A piece of music may occasionally assign itself a task which lies outside of itself; but on the one hand, it cannot stick to that task

XXXI throughout, and on the other it must stand on its own and be intelligible without this extraneous commentary. When therefore we abstract entirely from the thought that this symphony should be connected to any ecclesiastical event at all, we will have to say that it is rich in beautifully invented passages, especially with regard to harmonic and rhythmic effects, that the whole composition bears witness to a master of craftsmanship and a fully-developed pen. On the other hand, we are missing melodic invention and a clear prominence and distinction of the individual sections. Some allusions to Euryanthe should be eliminated by the composer; and we would prefer it if the composer modelled his work more on the beautifully elaborated forms by Mozart than on the more colossal, but less harmonically balanced ones by Beethoven, as they manifest themselves in his most recent works.”64 As much as Mendelssohn always insisted how little he cared about the verdict of the critics, this double blow by the respected Rellstab must have smarted, particularly as it came at a time of other professional disappointments (such as the failed application to become director of the Singakademie) and personal blows such as the death of three close friends (Goethe, Zelter, Eduard Ritz); the result was a period of general self-doubt and depression. What must have hurt in particular was that Rellstab had misunderstood and dismissed the specific combination of monumentality and poetic intent in the succession of Beethoven for which Mendelssohn was aiming here; indeed he had denied that the symphony had intrinsic coherence, the most important criterion of all. It has been assumed – surely not without justification – that this lack of comprehension on Rellstab’s part contributed to Mendelssohn’s later rejection of the work, and played a part in his general rethinking of the semantic nature and qualities of instrumental music.65 Mendelssohn never returned to the “Reformation” symphony of his own accord, but was occasionally reminded of it against his will. Julius Rietz had, as mentioned above, inherited the score copy originally produced in Weimar for Heinrich Dorn after his brother Eduard’s death in 1832; as successor to Mendelssohn as municipal director of music in Düsseldorf he conducted a performance of the symphony66 by the Verein für Tonkunst on 7 December 1837.67 In the secondary literature, it has so far

been assumed that this performance had Mendelssohn’s blessing, but all available evidence mitigates against that. Rietz had no need to ask the composer for a score because he already had one, and in the numerous extant letters there is no mention of this project previous to the actual event. The first news Mendelssohn had of the performance68 is a letter by Rietz of 5 February 1838 in which the latter writes: “The Reformation Symphony has been performed, albeit without its title, and been received with great applause. People were scratching their heads what it was supposed to mean, and I was silently amused at the various speculations, but was careful not to reveal the truth. It happened just as the affair about the archbishop was at its peak, and it would have been the ideal time to make it clear to people where the tendency of the work lay! – Incidentally, I would truly appreciate it if you could intervene with a proper symphony, or better with a pair of them! They would be urgently needed!”69 The letter is silent on whether there had been discussions in the run-up to the performance, but Mendelssohn’s famous and hasty reply only a week later seems to indicate that there had not been: “I firmly intend to write a symphony – or rather a pair of symphonies – this year; may God give that they will turn out as I think and imagine them, but rarely write them.

I cannot stand the Reformation Symphony anymore; I would like to burn it more than any of my other pieces; it must never be published. I’d rather publish the Camacho overture even, but hardly that one either.”70 Mendelssohn was not amused when people performed his works without his permission, particularly if those performances were – as in this case – of unrevised and thus invalid versions; but in this case, he obviously did not want to create a rift between himself and his friend Rietz, especially since the exchange of letters in the year 1837 indicates that there were already tensions which Mendelssohn was at pains to soothe. The case is similar to that of the “Italian” symphony in A major: Mendelssohn was not thrilled that the Philharmonic Society kept performing the unrevised work throughout the 1830s, but they owned the rights to it and he thus could not and did not intervene.

He could and did refuse to make the “Reformation” symphony public on his own accord though, of course, and a request by the Lemberg music director Frank von Piatkowski was answered

XXXII very firmly in the negative: “I regret not to be able to send you the symphony for the celebration of the Reformation feast; it is such a juvenile youthful work that I am sometimes surprised how I didn’t manage to do a better job, and it is thus impossible for me to release it from the prison of my music cupboard.”71 It is worth mentioning in this context that Rietz, apparently on his own accord, suppressed the title of the work. According to Rudolf Elvers, the reason for this may have been the abovementioned affair about the archbishop: Rietz was careful not to fan the flames of the ‘Cologne troubles’, the tensions between the Prussian government of the Rhineland and the catholic archbishop in Cologne.72 Whatever the reason, Mendelssohn will have been relieved, and his response to Rietz was apparently pointed and clear enough to prevent further performances in Düsseldorf. The rejection of the symphony is further underscored three years later in another letter to Rietz where Mendelssohn, in the context of a general critique of Rietz’ compositions, refers to his symphony as an example: “there seems to me a certain spirit in your overture which I know all too well as it is the one that has in my opinion caused the failure of the Re­ formation Symphony, and which can surely and without fail be banished by much creative work of different types. In the same way in which the French, through card tricks and self-torment, want to make their thoughts interesting and highly contrived, one can also fall into the other extreme through natural revulsion against this habit and shy away from all things piquant and opulent so much that in the end the musical thought as such does not stay fresh and interesting enough, that a sparseness takes the place of those unnatural growths – it is the contrast between the Jesuit churches with their thousand tinsels and the Calvinist ones with four whitewashed walls, and true piety can exist in both – but the right way is in the middle between the two. – Oh God, forgive my preaching; but how can one communicate these matters? The basic ideas of your overture and my Reformation Symphony (both share those same qualities, in my opinion) are more momentous through what they mean than in and of themselves; of course I do not advocate exclusively the latter, (because that leads us into French ways), but also not exclusively the former; on the contrary, both must be combined and fused.”73

Posthumous Reception and Publication After Mendelssohn’s death, Rietz became one of his executors, and it may be due to his being aware that Mendelssohn viewed the “Reformation” symphony with such scepticism that the work – in contrast to the “Italian” symphony which appeared as early as 1851 – was held back for a long time.74 This reticence in turn became one of the major bones of contention in a journal­istic campaign launched by George Alexander Macfarren in Eng­­‑ land, postulating that the German editors had a moral duty to release the hitherto unpublished works by the composer to the public. Macfarren detailed his case in a lengthy essay in The Musical World of January 1853 of which only brief excerpts can be reproduced here: “The question now becomes very general, as it is perfectly natural, how many unpublished works has Mendelssohn left? […] Very many more than double the number of the whole amount of his works that have been at present printed, both before and since his death! […] I say, there needs no extraordinary power to explain who are they that defraud us, the world, of the property which is our right, the property, common to all the world, of a great man’s thoughts, since what is familiar to many needs not be mystery to any.”75 The party responsible is identified as the committee of executors, namely Ferdinand David, Moritz Hauptmann, Ignaz Moscheles, and Julius Rietz. After two further pages of outraged prose (“Why should a few, in this respect narrow-minded individuals, from mistaken zeal, from a disappreciation of the merits of the works over which they hold control, and of the universal interest in them, withhold these, their property, from all the world?”76), the “Reformation” symphony is presented as the principal exhibit, being the most substantial of the withheld works: “Among the unpublished works is a Symphony on a very extensive plan, written to celebrate the centenary of the Reformation, in which the Corale of Luther, ‘Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott’ forms a very important feature.

It is said that Mendelssohn held this work in very high esteem; that he suppressed it at the period of its composition, because at this time Meyerbeer produced his Huguenots, in which the same theme of Luther is most laboriously trifled with, and he would not submit his work to such a comparison as the ignorant would, in all certainty, institute between it and this compo-

XXXIII sition, which, whatever its merits, would be a wholly unworthy and unnatural rival to anything that Mendelssohn ever could have produced; and it is said that he always intended, when the appropriate opportunity should arrive, to bring out this Re­ formation Symphony as one of the works upon which he was most confident to rest his reputation.”77 Whether justified or not, Macfarren’s pamphlet drew a number of responses: three weeks later, he printed a response by Charles Edward Horsley in which again the “Reformation” symphony is central to the argument: “The great error, however, into which your authority has fallen, is with regard to the ‘Reformation Symphony’. This was written before Mendelssohn went to Rome in 1827 [sic], and very shortly after the Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture.

It never was a favourite with him, and on playing it over to our mutual friend, Klingemann, they both agreed that it was not equal to the then published works, and it was Mendelssohn’s strongest wish that it should never be heard or published.”78 The editor of the Musical World, James William Davison, himself intervened a week later on Macfarren’s behalf,79 including further replies by Horsley and Macfarren himself, but most notably presenting a letter by Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy who had been informed of the debate and commented as follows: “As concerns the laying by of the Reformation Symphony, this work of Felix Mendelssohn’s early youth (the composition of which occurred long before that of the symphony in A, and which Felix Mendelssohn never once performed anywhere in concurrence with his own judgment), after conscientious examination was not considered suitable for publication.”80 In the meantime, the Philharmonic Society had attempted to obtain the symphony through a direct request to Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Jules Benedict who apparently had been in charge of communicating with her could only pass on a negative response to the society’s secretary George Hogarth, however. The English translation of this letter is preserved in the society archive: “To the request you have kindly undertaken on behalf of the Directors of the Philharmonic Society, I am unfortunately obliged to give a negative answer. Tho’ I should willingly endeavour to render service to those honorable gentlemen – it seems to me not proper (not just – the German words are nicht billig –) to present a work to the public – which the au-

thor himself had laid aside long ago – which he had performed no where – and of which as of an involontary juvenile production he spoke with contempt – I hope – this reason will serve as a satisfactory apology to that much esteemed Society, which has always shown so much kindness to my husband. With sincere friendship Your’s truly Cecile Mendelssohn Bartholdy.”81 Nothing was gained via this route either, then, not least given that Mendelssohn’s widow had by this point lost virtually all control over the effects of her dead husband.82 Other journals chimed in with further comments, either criticising Macfarren (such as the Athenaeum83) or expressing amusement from a distance (such as Dwight’s Journal of Music84 in Boston). As was hardly to be expected otherwise, the affair bore no fruit since the executors in German saw no reason to act, but it is a telling episode with regard both to the immense affection and interest felt by the English public towards Mendelssohn, and to attitudes towards the posthumous publication of works more generally. Even Johann Christian Lobe felt the need to comment on the affair in his Fliegende Blätter, albeit as late as 1855.85 This summary of the London events contains a remarkable aside at the end. Lobe relates Jules Benedict’s claim that “he knew the ‘Reformation Symphony’ and declared it to be worthy of Mendelssohn” which is countered by Lobe himself: “Mendelssohn himself once showed me the ‘Reformation Symphony’, and I must indeed declare that it is an immature juvenile work.”86 Lobe’s tendency to embellish his recollections is well known by now, however,87and he tended to exaggerate the closeness of his friendship with Mendelssohn (as with other famous composers), so we must take the veracity of this statement with a grain of salt.

Not until 1867 – after a pause of fifteen years – did the executors turn once again to the publication of works from Mendelssohn’s estate, and now it was also the turn of the “Reformation” symphony. The details of this are discussed in a letter from Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy to Rietz dated 13 September 1867 which is revealing in many respects and therefore quoted in full here: “Dearest sir, since I have heard from the gentlemen of Breitkopf & Härtel that you are unwilling to allow the exemplar of the Reformation Symphony in your possession to be used for the engraving of the score, I would like to ask you to have a

Once the copy is made, I would ask you to send the same to Herr Simrock in Bonn whom I have instructed with the publication. With sincere expressions of esteem, yours truly, K Mendelssohn Bartholdy | PS. For England, the publication will be handled by the gentlemen of Ewer who already have received a copy taken from your autograph through my sister.”88 This demonstrates in the first instance that Rietz had responded in the negative to a request by Breitkopf & Härtel regarding publication of the symphony; this may still be owed to his recollection of Mendelssohn’s own rejection of the work, as well as to his own scepticism whether it was really of the same quality as Mendelssohn’s other symphonies. The latter is confirmed by an entry in Rietz’s diary dated 16 April 1867 where he reports a meeting with Mendelssohn’s son Paul discussing the selection of possible further works to be published from the estate: “In the evening, fat Paul was there. Discussed the publication of the estate once again. Seemed on our side, but wouldn’t or couldn’t abandon his brother Carl and thus expressed no clear opinion. Played through the Songs Without Words sent by Carl (none of them pleased decidedly; even the best among them are passable at best), then songs with words (‘o könnt’ ich zu dir fliegen’ did not please; it was hard to believe that it was by Felix at all, even though it clearly is), finally the Reformation Symphony from the score; tant bien que possible.

While recognising much that was beautiful, even old Paul had to concede the unfinished nature of it, the discrepancy between form and content. Results for the edition: nil.”89 Secondly, as is apparent from the letter cited above, Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy was clearly the driving force behind the publication of further compositions from his father’s estate, and he had thus taken the initiative and instructed Simrock with the publication of the “Reformation” symphony. We also learn that by this time at the latest, Rietz was in possession of the autograph (in addition to the copy for Dorn from his brother’s estate), but that a further copy of the score from Mendelssohn’s estate existed which had been turned over to Novello, Ewer &

Co. by Karl’s sister Marie Benecke who lived in London, to serve as the basis for the English first edition. Rietz’ hand was now forced, of course: score and parts appeared without much further delay in the spring of 1868 in Germany90 as well as England.91 In the process, the publishers also created the unfortunate misunderstanding of the “Reformation” symphony as Mendelssohn’s fifth and last contribution to the genre. On the title page of the German first edition, we read Reformations- | Sinfonie | Nr. 5. | componirt im Jahre 1830 | von | Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy | OP. 107. | N.o 36 der nachgelassenen Werke | NEUE FOLGE; the English version which is a direct translation of the German begins with SYMPHONY | N.o 5 | (The Reformation). The “Italian” which Mendelssohn considered his Second Symphony had already sailed under the false flag of the ‘Fourth’ since 1851 and continues to do so until today; but counting the D minor Symphony of 1830/32 as the Fifth is potentially even more misleading as Mendelssohn rejected it before even assigning it a number in his own perceived order of works; what is more, it represents his first attempt at a ‘great’ Romantic symphony and not his last.

The copy intended for Ewer92 has a bit of additional history of its own. Whereas it did not eventually serve as the basis for the English first edition – which presumably for reasons of cost simply reprinted the plates made by Simrock – it must have started to circulate even before that edition was published since the symphony was performed a number of times in London and even Liverpool in later 1867 and early 1868: the first under the direction of August Manns in Crystal Palace, on 30 November 1867,93 a further two by Joseph Barnby in St. James’ Hall on 12 December 1867 und on 29 January 1868,94 as well as by Jules Benedict in Liverpool, likewise in January of 1868.95 The performances must have been based on the Ewer copy, even more so since it patently served as a conducting score, containing a number of entries by an English hand in blue crayon.96 A number of further performances in England throughout 1868 – many now presumably using the printed material – further underscore how eagerly the work had been awaited here, and the

XXXV reports as well as the reviews range from the positive to the enthusiastic. Davison’s verdict that it is “a work which is as unique in form and conception as it is transcendent in musical beauty and masterly execution” is indicative for its reception in Eng­ land.97 By comparison, the echo in Germany was much more restrained – more restrained even than in France where the symphony had been performed in Jules Pasdeloup’s Concerts populaires as early as 22 March 1868 and had to be repeated straightaway the week after.98 There were far fewer performances, and positive reviews stand side by side with those which took the view that the symphony, while certainly a valuable addition to the repertoire by a distinguished composer, did not count amongst his major works.99 In the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, it was not even announced, much less reviewed. Up to this day, the “Reformation” symphony remains in the shadow of its two sibling works, the “Italian” and the “Scottish” symphonies. *** An edition such as the present one is not conceivable without the assistance and co-operation of many individuals and institutions.
