Vorwort Die Ouvertüre C-dur MWV P 2, die sogenannte „Trompeten-Ouvertüre“, und die Ouvertüre c-moll (zu Ruy Blas) MWV P 15 sind zwei Orchesterwerke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, die zu seinen Lebzeiten unveröffentlicht blieben und erst 1867 bzw. 1851 erschienen. Im Gegensatz zu anderen postum gedruckten Opera, die der Komponist bewusst zurückgezogen und nur im heimischen Schreibtisch aufbewahrt hatte, brachte Mendelssohn die beiden Ouvertüren mehrfach zur Aufführung. Chronologisch umrahmen sie die vier bald nach ihrer jeweiligen Entstehung gedruckten programmatischen Konzert-Ouvertüren: diejenige zu Shakespeares Sommernachtstraum E-dur op. 21 MWV P 3, sodann Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt D-dur op. 27 MWV P 5, Die Hebriden / The Isles of Fingal h-moll op. 26 MWV P 7 und schließlich die Konzert-Ouvertüre Nr. 4 zum Märchen von der schönen Melusine F-dur op. 32 MWV P 12. Die genannten Werke entstanden zwischen 1826 und 1833. Zuvor hatte Mendelssohn ein 1824 für die Doberaner Kur­ kapelle konzipiertes Andante und Allegro vivace („Nocturno“) MWV P 1 für elf Blasinstrumente geschrieben, das 1838 in einer erweiterten Bläser­besetzung als Ouvertüre für Harmoniemusik op. 24 veröffentlicht wurde.

Im Jahre 1839, die vier Konzert-Ouvertüren waren inzwischen bei Breitkopf & Härtel gedruckt, entstand die in diesem Band vorgelegte O ­ uvertüre c-moll MWV P 15. Sie bildete den Abschluss von ­Mendelssohns Konzert-Ouvertüren, war – im Gegensatz zu allen anderen genannten Werken – tatsächlich als Eröffnungsstück zu einer Bühnenmusik konzipiert worden und fungierte ursprünglich als Einleitung der Musik zu Ruy Blas MWV M 11. Das fulminante Stück fand dann jedoch in einer veränderten Fassung seinen Weg in die Konzertsäle. „Mendelssohn=Bartholdy hat zu Victor Hugo’s Drama Ruy Blas eine Ouverture geschrieben, die in Leipzig mehr als das ganze Stück angesprochen hat.“1 Mit diesen Worten berichtete die in Prag ansässige Zeitung Bohemia von einem Werk, das Anfang März 1839 innerhalb von drei Tagen für das Leipziger Stadt-Theater entstanden war. Über die näheren Umstände unterrich­tete der Komponist seine Mutter wenige Tage nach der Uraufführung: „Du willst wissen, wie es mit der Ouvertüre zugegangen ist – lustig genug; vor 6=8 Wochen kam die Bitte an mich für die Vorstellung des Theaterpensionsfonds (einer sehr guten und wohlthätigen Anstalt hier die zu ihrem Benefiz Victor Hugo’s Ruy Blas gab) eine Ouvertüre ud. die in dem Stück vorkommende Romanze zu componiren, weil man sich davon eine bessere Einnahme versprach wenn mein Name auf dem Titel stände. Ich las das Stück, das so niederträchtig unter jeder Würde ist wie mans gar nicht glauben kann, ud. sagte zu einer Ouvertüre hätte ich keine Zeit, ud. componirte ihnen die Romanze. Montag (heut vor 8 Tagen) sollte die Vorstellung sein; Dinstag kommen die Leute nun, bedanken sich höflich für die Romanze, ud sagen es wäre so schlimm, daß ich keine Ouvertüre geschrieben hätte, aber sie sähen sehr wohl ein, daß man zu einem solchen Werk Zeit brauche, und im nächsten Jahre, wenn sie dürften wollten sie mirs länger vorher sagen. Dieses wurmte mich; Cécile hatte sich erkältet ud. lag Abends um 9 und schlief, da überlegte ich mir die Sache, fing meine Partitur an; Mittwoch war den ganzen Morgen Concertprobe, Donnerstag Concert, ud. Freitag früh war die ganze Ouvertüre beim Abschreiber, wurde Montag erst im Concertsaal 3mal dann einmal im Theater probirt, Abends zu dem infamen Stück gespielt, und hat mir einen so großen Spas gemacht, wie nicht bald eine von meinen Sachen.

Im nächsten Concert wiederholen wir sie auf Begehren, da nenne ich sie aber nicht Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas, sondern zum Theaterpensionsfonds.“2 Die zuletzt genannte Wiederholung im Gewandhaus fand am 21. März in jenem denkwürdigen Konzert statt, in dem Mendelssohn auch die berühmte Erstaufführung von Franz Schuberts sogenannter „großer“ C-dur-Sinfonie D 944 realisierte.

Zehn Tage waren Zeit, um an der Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas Verfeinerungen und Korrekturen vorzunehmen. Der zweite Teil jenes 20. Abonne-

ment-Konzerts im Gewandhaus zu Leipzig begann dann am 21. März 1839 – laut Programmzettel – mit der „Ouverture (für die Vorstellung des Theaterpensions-Fonds componirt) von F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

(Manuscript.)“. Im ersten Teil erklangen Schuberts erwähnte Sinfonie und Mendelssohns 42. Psalm MWV A 15. Eine unmittelbare Reaktion Mendelssohns auf das Konzert ist nicht bekannt, doch das Publikum war offenkundig angetan, wie einer Rezension von Gottfried Wilhelm Fink zu entnehmen ist: „Der Beifall [für den 42. Psalm] war abermals höchst lebhaft, welcher auch der neuen, für die Vorstellung des Theaterpensionsfonds komponirten Ouverture desselben Meisters zu Theil wurde. Es liegt in der Natur der Sache, dass diese Ouverture, für einen solchen Zweck geschrieben, in ihrem Wesen sich nicht an jene Werke des Verfassers anschliessen kann, die, zwar gleichfalls Ouverturen genannt, doch eigentlich Tongemälde ausgeführterer Art über einen bestimmten und bekannten Gegenstand oder nach einem solchen sind, sondern mehr dem herrschenden Begriffe und Baue eines solchen Werkes folgen muss, und in solcher Weise erwies sie sich wirksam und wurde von der zahlreichen Versammlung vollkommen gewürdigt.“3 Nicht ganz sicher, aber wahrscheinlich ist es, dass Mendelssohn das Werk im Jahr der Entstehung noch einmal aufführte. Im September 1839 besuchte er ein Musikfest in Braunschweig, um dort sein Oratorium Paulus op. 36 MWV A 14 zu dirigieren, und gab am 8. September auch ein Konzert im Saal des medizinischen Gartens mit einer Ouvertüre – wohl das in Rede stehende neue Werk.4 Doch Ende des Jahres wuchs bereits die Distanz zum eigenen Opus. Am 2. November 1839 erklang es noch einmal im Gewandhaus.5 Kurze Zeit später wertete Mendelssohn gegenüber dem schottischen Komponisten John ­Thomson (1805–1841) das Werk als „a new Overture, which I have composed, is a mere sketch which I hardly think I shall ever bring before the public in that state.“6 Man kann davon ausgehen, dass bereits zu jener Zeit weitere Änderungen an den Stimmen vorgenommen wurden, denn im Sommer 1840 war Mendelssohn wieder optimistisch, die Komposition in England vorstellen zu können. Nach Birmingham schrieb er: „I will also bring over my new Overture, with all the parts.“7, und auch gegenüber seinem Freund Carl Klingemann wurde eine „M. S. Ouvertüre“8 versprochen.

Doch zur nächsten nachweisbaren Aufführung kam es erst 1841 in Düsseldorf. Am Dirigentenpult stand Julius Rietz, der für die weiteren Geschicke des Werkes noch eine besondere Rolle spielen sollte. Rietz, der Familie Mendelssohn seit den 1820er Jahren freundschaftlich verbunden, wandte sich im Februar 1841 an den Komponisten: „Wird Ihre Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas nicht gestochen? Wenn sie Manuscript bleibt, so wäre es mir sehr lieb, wenn Sie die Güte hätten, sie mir als solches zukommen zu lassen.“9 Mendelssohn schickte am 2. März bereitwillig eine handschriftliche Partitur, nicht ohne näher auf deren Problematik einzugehen: „Anbei erfolgt […] meine Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas, die Stimmen von letzterer hatte ich nicht, sondern nur diese, daraus zusammengeschriebne, elende Partitur; die ich nachher mit Mühe ud Noth von allen Nachlässigkeiten der Eile säuberte die theils ich, theils der Notenschreiber10 verschuldet hatten. U. A. stehen die Posaunen einmal 6 Seiten lang, glaub ich, einen Takt zu früh geschrieben; erst hab ich corrigirt, dann blos angemerkt. Sie werden sich schon herausfinden.

Auch sind gewiß noch Fehler genug drin. Sie wissen, daß ich das Stück in 2 Tagen geschrieben und in fünfen aufgeführt habe. Das wird dann in der Partitur in allen Sinnen zu bemerken sein, ud. ich bitte um Nachsicht ud. rechne darauf daß sie aus Ihren Händen durchaus nicht in andre kommen darf.“11 Nach nur wenigen Tagen setzte Rietz Mendelssohn in Kenntnis: „Ihre Ouvertüre ist bereits in korrekter Partitur kopirt u. soll für mein Concert aufgespart bleiben.“12 Unbekannt ist, ob Rietz die Partitur abschreiben ließ oder selbst abschrieb. Auf jeden Fall wurden in Düsseldorf auch die Stimmen herausgezogen, sodass am 22. Mai 1841 eine „Musi­

IV kalische Aufführung im Saale des Herrn A. Becker auf dem Steinwege“ stattfinden konnte, deren „Zweite Abteilung“ gemäß Programm­zettel mit der „Ouvertüre zu Victor Hugo’s Drama: Ruy Blas von Felix ­M endelssohn-Bar tholdy. (Manuscript.)“ eröffnet wurde. Am Ende des Konzerts erklang eine Fest-Ouvertüre von Julius Rietz.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy sollte sein Werk nur noch einmal öffentlich dirigieren, und er ließ es auch nicht veröffentlichen. Eher lustlos berichtete er seiner Mutter über eine Aufführung im Gewandhaus am 26. November 1842: „Vor 3 Tagen war das Concert der alten Schroeder, in dem ich spielen mußte ud. die Ruy Blas Ouvert. dirigiren […].“13 Alle weiteren Pläne blieben unausgeführt. Zwar notierte Mendelssohn 1844 auf einer Liste mit Werken, die für eine Aufführung in London infrage ­kämen, die „Ouvert. zu Ruy Blas?“.14 Doch scheint eine missglückte ­Probe in London, glaubt man einer durch George Hogarth (1783–1870) kolportierten Begebenheit,15 den Ausschlag dafür gegeben zu haben, das Werk schließlich zurückzuziehen.16 Nach dem frühen Tod des Komponisten am 4. November 1847 war seine Ehefrau Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy viele Monate lang um die Sichtung des Erbes bemüht und wurde alsbald mit dem Wunsch konfrontiert, weitere Werke für eine Edition zuzulassen. Oberstes Gebot blieb für sie, den Willen ihres verstorbenen Gatten zu respektieren und gegenüber Dritten zu verteidigen. Infolgedessen war sie bei einer Auswahl sehr zögerlich: „Soll aber hierbei im Sinne meines Ehemannes gehandelt werden, so kann eine weitere Herausgabe nur mit strenger und gewissenhafter Auswahl vorgenommen werden. Nicht wenige seiner Compositionen sind niemals für die Oeffentlichkeit oder für die Herausgabe bestimmt gewesen; er schrieb dieselben meist nur aus innerem Drange als Ergebniß und Thatsache seines stets regen innern Kunstlebens, ohne Rücksicht und Absicht auf künftige Veröffentlichung, zu welcher er sich überhaupt schwer, in der Regel aber erst nach jahre­ langem Warten entschloß.“17 Die Witwe übertrug die Entscheidung über die herauszugeben­den Werke einem Gremium, dem neben dem Bruder Paul M ­ endelssohnBartholdy auch der Jurist Heinrich Conrad Schleinitz sowie die mit dem Komponisten eng vertrauten Musiker Ferdinand David, Moritz Hauptmann, Julius Rietz und Ignaz Moscheles angehörten. So erschienen in zwei Wellen zunächst die Opera 73–100 (1849–1852) und dann nach über fünfzehnjähriger Pause und dem Tode von ­Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy Werke, denen die Opuszahlen 101–121 zugeordnet wurden (1867–1873). Neuere Forschungen haben allerdings ergeben, dass die befreundeten Komponisten letztlich weniger eingebunden wurden, als es bisher den Anschein hatte, und dass der ohne­hin mit vielen Aufgaben ausgelasteten Witwe nach und nach das Heft der Entscheidung aus der Hand genommen wurde.18 Hauptverantwortlich für die Gestaltung der ersten Editionsphase der postumen Werke waren demzufolge der Bruder des Komponisten sowie Advokat Schleinitz, von musikalischer Seite aus wohl vorrangig Julius Rietz. Resigniert stellte Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy 1849 bezüglich des Fragmentes zur Oper Lorelei MWV L 7 fest: „Meinem Gefühl ist jede Veröffentlichung dieses Werkes sehr zuwieder, indeßen habe ich hier nicht zu ent­scheiden.“19 In der Regel wandten sich die Verlage an Paul Mendelssohn-­Bartholdy oder an den Advokaten Schleinitz, um die Erlaubnis für eine Edition bestimmter Werke zu erlangen. Vier deutsche Verlagshäuser teilten sich die insgesamt 28 Opuszahlen. Dabei führten sie Werkgattungen weiter, die ihnen der Komponist schon zu Lebzeiten übertragen hatte.

Der Leipziger Verleger Julius Kistner (1805–1868) konnte sich immer­ hin fünf Opuszahlen mit insgesamt dreizehn Werken sichern. Er übernahm Männerchöre, Duette, den 98. Psalm MWV A 23 (gedruckt als op. 91) und die einzige zu jenem Zeitpunkt verfügbare Ouvertüre, diejenige zu Ruy Blas, die unter der Opuszahl 95 veröffentlicht werden sollte.20 Bald stellte sich jedoch heraus, dass die Quellenlage21 eher dürftig war. Zunächst hatte man wohl sogar daran gedacht, die ganze Schau-

spielmusik, also auch noch den dazugehörigen Chor der Wäscherinnen22, mit herauszubringen, doch stellte Cécile Mendelssohn ­Bartholdy fest: „Bis jetzt hat sich nur die Partitur zu Ruy-Blas gefunden, ich will Nachmittag noch eine große Nachsuchung halten. Ueber das Lied glaube ich kein Recht mehr zu haben … Man müßte sich deßhalb an Dr. ­Härtel wenden …“.23 Im Mai 1851 schrieb sie an Schleinitz: „[…] Jetzt habe ich auch einige Bitten an Sie. Nämlich können Sie mir nicht darauf helfen, bei wem oder wo eine abgeschriebene Partitur der Ruy Blas O ­ uvertüre existiert, Herr Rietz schreibt, es sei keine vorhanden in Leipzig, sollte sie Felix einmal mit nach England genommen haben? Denn daß eine da war, das weiß ich […].“24 Bei der Partitur kann es sich um die „elende Partitur“25 von Henschke oder die für die Düsseldorfer Aufführung von 1841 kopierte gehandelt haben. Die im Mendelssohnschen Nachlass überlieferte autographe Partitur dagegen war eindeutig zur Bühnen­ musik gehörig und daher als Fassung für die Konzert-­Ouvertüre bestenfalls als Referenzquelle geeignet. Die letztlich erschienene Partitur wich jedenfalls in so vielen Details von der Mendelssohnschen Handschrift ab, dass sie nicht auf einer bloßen redaktionellen Einrichtung beruhen konnte, sondern eine auf den Komponisten zurückgehende Abschrift als Vorlage gehabt haben muss. Eine in London verwahrte Partitur der Royal Music Library konnte Rietz nicht einbeziehen. Sie war auf andere Weise ebenso weit entfernt vom Autograph und differierte nicht nur hinsichtlich der Länge.26 Ganz offensichtlich hat M ­ endelssohns Angewohnheit des permanenten Weiter­arbeitens auch bei dieser Ouvertüre zu werkgenetischen Stadien geführt, die sich in den verschiedenen Quellen manifestieren, in diesem Falle dem ­Autograph, der Londoner Partitur und dem postumen Druck, dem auch die vorliegende Edition folgt. Mendelssohns Äußerung gegenüber ­Moscheles, „Ich habe eine neue Theater=Ouvertüre componirt, an der ich großen Spas erlebt habe“,27 bezog sich eben auch auf das Bestreben, das Werk so perfekt wie möglich zu gestalten.

Allen im Kritischen Bericht genannten Bibliotheken sei für ihre Bereitschaft gedankt, die in ihrem Besitz befindlichen Quellen für die Editionsarbeiten, die in den letzten Jahren in Zusammenhang mit der „Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ an der Sächsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig erfolgten, zur Verfügung zu stellen. In Serie I, Band 9 dieser Ausgabe (2016) finden sich ausführliche Quellenbeschreibungen sowie weitere Informationen zu der hier vorgelegten Ouvertüre.

Das Stück war allerdings bereits in einem Klavierauszug als Raubdruck erschienen, und das Autograph der Partitur hatte Mendelssohn 1844 an Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (1809–1888) verschenkt, siehe Leipziger ­Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohns Bartholdy, Serie V, Band 11 (2015), S. XXVII. Brief ohne Datum von Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy an Ferdinand David, Standort unbekannt, zitiert nach: J. A. Stargardt, Katalog 663 (21./22. März 1996), S. 349, Nr. 941. Die Londoner Partitur, die die Fassung der englischen Erstaufführung von 1849 überliefert, wird in der Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohns Bartholdy, Serie I, Band 9 (2016), wiedergegeben und ein­ gehend besprochen. Preface The Overture in C major MWV P 2, the so-called “Trumpet Overture,” and the Overture in C minor (to Ruy Blas) MWV P 15 are two orchestral works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, which, remaining unpublished in his lifetime, appeared only in 1867 and 1851, respectively. Unlike other posthumously printed opera that the composer had deliberately withheld and kept only privately in his desk at home, Mendelssohn did perform the two overtures several times. Chronologically, they frame the four programmatic concert overtures composed between 1826 and 1833 and printed soon after their respective geneses: the overtures to Shakespeare’s Sommernachtstraum [Midsummer Night’s Dream] in E major op. 21 MWV P 3; to Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt [Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage] in D major op. 27 MWV P 5; Die Hebriden [The Hebrides] / The Isles of Fingal in B minor op. 26 MWV P 7; and finally the Concert Overture no. 4 to the Märchen von der schönen Melusine [Fairy Tale of the Beautiful Melusine] in F major op. 32 MWV P 12. The mentioned works were composed between 1826 and 1833. Previously, in 1824, Mendelssohn had written for the Doberan Spa Band an Andante and Allegro vivace (“Nocturno”) MWV P 1 for eleven wind instruments, which was published in 1838 in an expanded brass scoring as Overture for Winds op. 24.

Meanwhile in 1839, the four concert overtures were printed by ­Breitkopf & Härtel, the Overture in C minor MWP P 15 present in this volume had originated. It concluded Mendelssohn’s concert overtures, had actually been conceived – unlike all the other works mentioned above – as the opening piece for a stage work and originally served as

an introduction to the music for Ruy Blas MWV M 11. The brilliant piece then found its way, though in a modified version, into the concert halls.

“Mendelssohn=Bartholdy has written an overture to Victor Hugo’s drama Ruy Blas, which appealed in Leipzig more than the entire piece.”1 With these words, the Prague-based newspaper Bohemia reported on a work originating for the Leipzig Stadt-Theater (City Theater) within three days at the beginning of March 1839. A few days after the premiere, the composer informed his mother about the particular circumstances: “You want to know how the overture came about – funnily enough; 6=8 weeks ago, the request came to me for an overture for the Theater Pension Fund’s performance (a very good and charitable institution here that gave for its benefit Victor Hugo’s Ruy Blas) and to compose the romance that occurs in the piece, because if my name were on the title, a better income would be promised. I read the play, which is so vile beyond anyone’s dignity as can hardly even be believed, and said that I would not have time for an overture, and composed the romance for them. Monday (8 days ago today) was supposed to be the performance; then on Tuesday the people come, thank me politely for the romance and say that it would be too bad that I had not written an overture, but they could see that time would be needed for such a work, and if they were allowed it next year, they would tell me further in advance. This rankled me; Cécile had caught a cold and had gone to bed at 9 in the evening and slept, then I pondered the matter, started my score; the whole morning Wednesday was the dress rehearsal, Thursday, concert, and early Friday the entire overture was

VI at the copyist, Monday it was rehearsed 3 times in the concert hall, then once in the theater, the infamous piece was played in the evening, and, was great fun for me such as I’ll not soon have from one of my things. We will repeat it in the next concert upon request, but there I won’t call it overture to Ruy Blas, but to the theater pension fund.”2 The latter-mentioned repeat took place in the Gewandhaus on 21 March in that memorable concert when Mendelssohn also realized the famous first performance of Franz Schubert’s so-called “great” C-major symphony D 944.

He had ten days to correct and polish the overture to Ruy Blas. The second half of that 20th subscription-series concert in the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 21 March 1839 began then – according to the program note – with the “Overture (composed for the Theater Pension Fund’s performance) by F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. (Manuscript.).” Heard in the first half was Schubert’s aforementioned symphony and Mendelssohn’s 42nd Psalm MWV A 15. The composer’s immediate reaction to the concert is unknown, but the audience was obviously impressed, as can be gathered from a review by Gottfried Wilhelm Fink: “The applause [for the 42nd Psalm] was once again very lively, which was also accorded to the new overture composed by the same master for the Theater Pension Fund’s performance. It lies in the nature of things that this overture, written for such a purpose, cannot in essence fit in with those works of the composer that, though also called overtures, are, in fact, actually tone paintings of a more accomplished sort about or from a specific and well-known subject matter, but must rather follow the prevailing concept and structure of such a work, and in such a manner it proved to be effective and fully appreciated by the large assembly.”3 It is not quite certain, though likely, that Mendelssohn performed the work once again the year it was composed. In September 1839 he attended a music festival in Braunschweig to conduct his “St Paul” oratorio op. 36 MWV A 14, and also gave on 8 September in the hall of the medical garden a concert with an overture – probably the new work in question.4 Yet by the end of the year, the distance to his own opus was already growing. On 2 November 1839 it was once again heard in the Gewandhaus.5 To the Scottish composer John Thomson (1805–1841) short time later, Mendelssohn described the work as “a new overture, which I have composed, […] a mere sketch which I hardly think I shall ever bring before the public in that state.”6 It can be assumed that further changes were already made to the parts at that time, for in the summer of 1840 Mendelssohn was again optimistic about being able to introduce the composition in England. He wrote to Birmingham: “I will also bring over my new Overture, with all the parts,”7 and even promised a “M. S. Overture”8 in a letter to his friend Carl Klingemann.

But the next ascertainable performance came only in 1841 in Düsseldorf. On the conductor’s podium was Julius Rietz, who was still to play a special role in the work’s further destiny. Rietz, a friend of the Mendelssohn family since the 1820s, turned to the composer in February 1841: “Isn’t your overture to Ruy Blas engraved? If it remains a manuscript, it would be very nice if you would be so kind as to have it sent to me as such.”9 Mendelssohn obligingly sent a manuscript score on 2 March, not without further elaborating on its problems: ‘Enclosed […] is my overture to Ruy Blas, I did not have the parts of the latter, but only this miserable score compiled from them; which afterwards I just barely managed in haste to tidy up, above all, deficiencies that partly I, partly the music copyist10 had caused. Among other things, the trombones once 6 pages long, are, I think, written a measure too early; first I corrected, then merely annotated [them]. You will already find out. In it are certainly still errors enough. You know that I wrote the piece in 2 days and performed it in five. This will then be noticed in the score in all senses, and I ask for indulgence and expect that it will not be allowed to leave your hands for another’s.”11 After only a few days, Rietz informed Mendelssohn: “Your overture is already copied in a correct score and is to be saved up for my concert.”12 Whether Rietz had the score copied or copied it himself is not

known. In any case, the parts were also extracted in Düsseldorf, so that taking place on 22 May 1841 could be a “musical performance in Herr A. Becker’s hall on the Steinweg,” whose “second half,” according to the program, was opened by the “Overture to Victor Hugo’s Drama: Ruy Blas by Felix Mendelssohn-Bar tholdy. (Manuscript.).” Heard at the end of the concert was a festival overture by Julius Rietz.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was to have publicly conducted his work only once again, and he also did not have it published. Rather halfheartedly, he told his mother about a performance at the Gewandhaus on 26 November 1842: “Three days ago was the concert by the old Schroeder in which I had to play and conduct the Ruy Blas overture […].”13 All further plans remained unrealized. In 1844, in fact, ­Mendelssohn recorded in a list of works eligible for performance in London, the “Overture to Ruy Blas?”14 But, according to an incident spread by George Hogarth (1783–1870),15 an unsuccessful rehearsal in London appears to have been the decisive factor in the ultimate withdrawal of the work.16 After the composer’s early death on 4 November 1847, his wife Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy endeavored for many months to sort through the legacy and was rather soon confronted with the wish to authorize further works for an edition. Her top priority remained to respect the will of her deceased husband and to defend it against third parties. As a result, she was very reluctant to make a selection: “But if this is to be dealt with in my husband’s interest, then a further publication can only be done with strict and conscientious selection. Not a few of his compositions were never intended for the public or for publication; he mostly wrote them only out of an inner need as the result and fact of his ever-active inner artistic life, without concern and intention to publish in the future, deciding to do so with difficulty only at length after years of waiting.”17 The widow transferred the decision about the works to be published to a committee that included, besides her husband’s brother Paul ­Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, also the jurist Heinrich Conrad Schleinitz, as well as the musicians intimately familiar with the composer, Ferdinand David, Moritz Hauptmann, Julius Rietz and Ignaz Moscheles. Thus, appearing in two waves were initially the opera 73–100 (1849–1852), and then after an interval of more than fifteen years and Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s death, came the works assigned the opus numbers 101–121 (1867–1873). More recent research has shown, however, that the composer’s friends were ultimately less involved than had hitherto appeared, and that gradually the volume of decision was taken out of the hands of the widow anyhow burdened with many tasks.18 Mainly responsible for organizing the first phase of editing the posthumous works for publication was the composer’s brother as well as the lawyer Schleinitz; probably predominant from the musical side was Julius Rietz. Resigned, Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy observed in 1849 with respect to the fragment for the opera Lorelei MWV L 7: “My feeling goes very much against any publication of this work, however, here it’s not for me to decide.”19 As a rule, the publishers turned to Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy or to the lawyer Schleinitz for permission to attain an edition of certain works. Four German publishing houses divided the altogether 28 opus numbers among themselves. In doing so, they continued the genres that the composer had already assigned to them during his lifetime.

The Leipzig publisher Julius Kistner (1805–1868) was able to secure at least five opus numbers with a total of thirteen works. He took over men’s choirs, duets, the 98th Psalm MWV A 23 (printed as op. 91) and the only overture available at that time, the one to Ruy Blas, to be published under the opus number 95.20 It soon turned out, though, that the source situation was rather meager.21 At first, it was even thought that all the drama’s music should be brought out, including the washerwomen’s chorus, Chor der Wäsche­ rinnen,22 though Cécile Mendelssohn Bartholdy stated: “So far, only the score for Ruy-Blas has been found, this afternoon I shall still mount

VII a large search. I do not think that I have rights anymore to the lied …

We must therefore turn to Dr. Härtel ….”.23 In May 1851 she wrote to Schleinitz: “[…] Now I also have some requests for you. Namely, can’t you help me with whomever or wherever a copied score of the Ruy Blas overture exists, Herr Rietz writes that none is available in Leipzig, was Felix supposed to have taken it with him to England? For I know that one was there […].”24 The score may have been the “miserable score”25

by Henschke or the one copied for the Düsseldorf performance of 1841. The autograph score extant in the Mendelssohn estate, on the other hand, was clearly part of the incidental music and therefore at best suitable as a reference source for the concert overture. In any case, the score that ultimately appeared differed from Mendelssohn’s manuscript in so many details that it could not have been based on a mere editorial configuration, but must have been based on a copy as model going back to the composer. Rietz could not involve the score preserved in the Royal Music Library, London. It was in other ways just as far from the autograph, differing not just in length.26 Obviously, ­Mendelssohn’s habit of continuing to work also on this overture has led to genetic work stages manifested in the various sources, in this case, the autograph, the London score, and the posthumous print, which is also the subject of this edition. Mendelssohn’s statement to Moscheles, “I have composed a new theatrical overture in which I have experienced great fun,”27 also refers to the efforts to make the work as perfect as possible.
