2. Band, S. 202.
Preface The composer, pianist and conductor Eduard Franck (1817–1893) was born into a cultivated and art-loving family of bankers in Breslau (now Wrocław in Poland). He showed such precocious talent in his early childhood that Nicolò Paganini, who heard the boy play in Bad Ems, invited him to perform at one of his concerts in 1830. Young Eduard outgrew the pedagogical abilities of his teachers in Breslau during the years that followed and, in 1834, his older brother Hermann arranged for him to study in Düsseldorf with his friend – and Eduard’s musical hero – Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. After spending a profitable and congenial year with Mendelssohn, Franck returned to Breslau to complete his general education. He rejoined his mentor in Leipzig when Mendelssohn was appointed director of the Gewandhaus concerts and there became part of the city’s musical circle, befriending the English composer and pianist William Sterndale Bennett, the violinist Ferdinand David (for whom Mendelssohn was to write his E minor Concerto in 1844) and Robert Schumann. Franck toured throughout Europe as a pianist during the early 1840s before settling in Berlin 1845, where he met Tony Tiedemann (1827–1875), a pianist and friend of Mendelssohn’s sister, Fanny. He married her in 1850 and they had three children together, one of whom was the composer Richard Franck (1858–1938); Richard, like his father, maintained a more conservative attitude in relation to the ongoing developments in music during his lifetime. While continuing to perform and compose prolifically, Franck also established an excellent reputation as a teacher at conservatories in Cologne (1851–1859), Berne (1859–1867) and Berlin (1867–1892). He died in Berlin on December 1, 1893. At home Eduard Franck was considered a pioneer of musical Romanticism. His friendly relation-
ships with Robert Schumann, William Sterndale Bennett and – especially – with Mendelssohn, showed him his future path and it’s not surprising, that these role models had a profound influence on the young man. His first publications were well–received and elicited positive notices from the critics. He respectfully dedicated his first work, the Zwölf Studien für das Pianoforte (Twelve Studies for piano) printed by Kistner in Leipzig 1837, to his esteemed teacher Mendelssohn, though his later music shows a more expansive emotional quality that may have been influenced by that of his friend Robert Schumann. Today Eduard Franck is appreciated not so much as a follower than as a mediator between the generations, one who had already anticipated many of the great composers to come, such as Brahms and Bruckner. Franck quickly gained public recognition and his piano technique made a particularly deep impression for the classical equanimity and expressive warmth of his playing, the beautiful poise of his keystrokes and the sparkling clarity that he brought to keyboard figuration. This recognition of his talent was not only confined to Germany but manifested itself wherever he appeared as a musician. Through his brother Hermann’s circle of friends, he met Frédéric Chopin in Paris and played the newly published Variations sérieuses by Mendelssohn for him. The period following his years with Mendelssohn was one both of further learning and of travelling, during which time Eduard Franck journeyed in Germany, France, England and, most satisfyingly, in Italy. Rome, where he became a member of the Congregation ed Accademia di Santa Cecilia, was the source of immense stimulation. Leaving Italy behind was hard for him but he decided it was essential, for his further progress as a “German Musician“, to live and work in his home country (1845).
He composed his Piano Concerto in D minor Op. 13 during the early 1840s, putting the work into its final form not later than 1846; it was published in 1849 or 1850. The work’s first public performance took place on March 15, 1849 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Franck dedicated it to Clara Schumann. Ignaz Moscheles declared that the piece displayed “noble bearing, poetic ideas and good instrumentation“. The very successful reception of a number of other works led to an appointment at the Rhenish Music School in Cologne in 1851, as a teacher of piano, score reading and music theory; from1852 he also became director of the Municipal Choral Society. His close personal and professional contact with Ferdinand Hiller, under whose leadership the school developed into one of the leading institutions of its kind in Germany, proved very productive. The works of this period were consistently well received: in addition to orchestral works (symphonies, overtures), these included the Violin Sonatas Opp. 19 and 23 and other major chamber music works. The 1855 first performance of his Violin Concerto in E minor, under Hillers direction, was a triumph. In 1859 Franck moved to Berne, becoming director of the newly established music school. Honoured with title of Professor honorarius and a doctorate, he was responsible for the musical life of
both city and university. Books on the history of the Conservatory and manuscripts of several piano sonatas serve as reminders of his time there. However, he continued to show restraint when it came to publishing his works, which was obviously due to his strong self–criticism. In 1867 Julius Stern succeeded in obtaining Eduard Franck for his new conservatory in Berlin and from 1878 to 1892, into his late seventies, he taught at Breslaur’s Conservatory. Here in Berlin, he poured out a cornucopia of works that had been completed earlier but withheld, including another symphony, the String Sextet Op. 41, a piano quintet, a string quartet and diverse piano music. He composed a second Cello Sonata (Op. 42), a late successor to the first one, which had been his Op. 6. These works, published late in his life, as well as the posthumously rediscovered works (only 9 of 18 Piano Sonatas are published so far) prove that Franck must have been working constantly during his “silent” years. The two Sextets published in 1882/84 (Op. 41 and posthumous Op. 50) are important examples of his later style, the nature of which is particularly evident in Op. 50, with its melancholic, retrospective mood. Paul Feuchte
The Work Eduard Franck’s Piano Concerto in D minor Op. 13 is his first work for a larger ensemble. Franck was already an outstanding and celebrated pianist at a young age and performed together with his teacher Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Evidence suggests, that he came up with the idea for a piano concerto in these early years and that it took shape before he returned to Germany. Franck played the work, which he dedicated to Clara Schumann, on several occasions e. g. at a free concert on November 30, 1846 in Berlin. Critics highlighted the appealing motives, the clarity and the most successful proportion of the solo instrument to the orchestra.1 Particular attention was paid to the performance at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on March 15, 1849. Especially Ignaz Moscheles was impressed by the noble attitude, the poetic ideas and the instrumentation, which he held in the highest regard to less favorable votes from the “New German School” and the prophets of a “future music” by Liszt and Wagner.2 Unfortunately, a statement of the dedicatee, Clara Schumann, is not known. Further performances took place in Cologne, end of June 1851 and March 14, 1854; 1862 in Berne and 1867 in Berlin. It seems, that the Concerto Franck played on November 3, 1861 in Berne, was Op. 13 too. The Piano Concerto was found (such as many other forgotten or lost works of Franck) by coincidence. Privious extensive research over many years remained unsuccessful. Due to Franck’s membership in the Congregazione ed Accademia dei Maestri e Professori di Musica di Roma Sotta la Invocazione di Santa Cecilia, whose library preserved the missing instrumental parts, the work can now be presented in the present Urtext edition. The Congregazione raised Franck into
their ranks, thus he could maintain his most stimulating musical contacts and, in return, enrich the musical life of Rome. The editor of this Urtext edition, the renowned pianist and Franck expert James Tocco will also be the first to perform the work for the first time after more than one hundred years. The publisher explicitly expresses his gratitude for his invaluable help preparing this edition.
