Vorwort Neben Johann David Heinichen und Johann Adolf Hasse gilt Jan Dismas Zelenka als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Dresdner Barock. Er wurde 1679 im böhmischen Launowitz (Louňovice) geboren und erhielt seinen ersten Musikunterricht höchstwahrscheinlich von seinem Vater, einem Organisten. Über seine Jugendjahre weiß man wenig, vermutlich war er Schüler am Prager Jesuitenkollegium. Ab 1710/11 bis zu seinem Tode 1745 wirkte er – zunächst als Kontrabassist, später als Kirchenkomponist – an der Dresdner Hofkapelle. Während eines längeren Wien-Aufenthaltes in den Jahren 1716–1719 nahm er Unterricht beim kaiserlichen Hofkapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux und setzte sich im Rahmen seiner Studien intensiv mit den Werken älterer Meister auseinander. Nach seiner Rückkehr konzentrierte sich Zelenkas Tätigkeit am Dresdner Hof vor allem auf organisatorische und kompositorische Arbeiten für den katholischen Hofgottesdienst.1 Neben zahlreichen anderen geistlichen Werken sind von Zelenka zwischen 1712 und 1741 um die zwanzig Messvertonungen überliefert. Die fünf späten, ab der zweiten Hälfte der 1730er Jahre entstandenen Messen (ZWV 17–21) unterscheiden sich dabei in Tonsprache und Konzeption deutlich von den frühen Messkompositionen. So wird hier u. a. der Einfluss des langjährigen Dresdner Hofkapellmeisters Johann Adolf Hasse hörbar, insbesondere was die Anlage der Arien und Orchesterritornelle angeht. Auch die oftmals ausdrucksstarke, individuelle Tonsprache ist eine Errungenschaft von Zelenkas Spätstil. Darüber hinaus wird der Unterschied auch im Hinblick auf die Besetzung offenkundig: Statt der „großen“ Besetzung mit Trompeten und Pauken verwendet Zelenka in den späten Messen eine deutlich kleinere Standardbesetzung von zwei Oboen, Violinen, Viola und Basso continuo, die nur in der vorliegenden Messe um zwei Flöten und ein Chalumeau2 bereichert wird. Die Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis zu Ehren der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit wurde von Zelenka im Jahr 1736 komponiert.3 Im Autograph findet sich nur ein Vermerk über den Abschluss des Credos am Allerheiligentag, nach unserer Kenntnis der Schrift Zelenkas und seines Schaffensprozesses kann man aber als wahrscheinlich annehmen, dass das gesamte Werk in einem Zeitraum von wenigen Wochen im Spätherbst 1736 entstanden ist. Ein Kompositionsanlass ist nicht überliefert; ob Zelenka es später als Teil seines sechs Messen umfassenden Zyklus der Missae ultimae verstand, können wir heute nicht mehr mit Sicherheit sagen.4 Die einzige erhaltene Quelle ist die autographe Konzeptpartitur,5 im alten Katalog der Sächsischen Landes- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden sind auch Stimmen verzeichnet, die jedoch seit 1945 verschollen sind. Wie auch die anderen späten Messen Zelenkas ist die Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis durch die Ausgewogenheit von konzerthaften und motettischen bzw. fugischen Chorsätzen bestimmt. Zu ersteren gehören etwa die groß angelegten Eröffnungssätze des Gloria und des Credo, zu den für Zelenka typischen Fugen mit häufig chromatischem Hauptthema die Schlussätze von Kyrie, Gloria, Credo und Agnus Dei. Das Dona nobis pacem ist

dabei eine wörtliche Wiederaufnahme des Kyrie (hier: Kyrie eleison II), wie bei Zelenka und seinen Zeitgenossen üblich. Zu den drei Arien der vorliegenden Messe, Nr. 2, 6 und 15, kommen ein lyrisches Duett der Männerstimmen, Nr. 17, und ein einfacher homophoner Terzett-Ensemblesatz, Nr. 12. Die Orchestrierung ist in den solistischen Sätzen generell zurückgenommen, besonders trifft dies jedoch für das Duett Nr. 17 zu, in der Tenor und Bass neben dem reduzierten Continuo lediglich von einer Oboe und dem Chalumeau begleitet werden. In Zelenkas Spätwerk sind die einzelnen Ordinariumsteile häufig durch einen musikalischen oder tonartlichen Rahmen als Einheit definiert. In der Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis kann man dies vor allem im Gloria erkennen. Die fünf Nummern dieses Abschnitts bilden zwei Komplexe, Nr. 4–6 und Nr. 7–8: Die konzerthafte Nr. 4 in a-moll mit ihrem Unisono-Ritornell geht mit dem Halbschluss E-dur direkt in die stark chromatische Qui tollis-Fuge in a-moll über (Nr. 5, T. 1–32); mit dem Allegro (Nr. 5, T. 33–58) wird die konzertante Musik von Nr. 4 wieder aufgegriffen, aber nur scheinbar abgeschlossen. In Wirklichkeit bleibt der Sinnzusammenhang durch den folgenden, ondeggiando6 begleiteten Largo-Chorblock, in dem die miserere-Bitte erneuert und verstärkt wird, offen (Nr. 5, T. 59–72). Dieser wiederum mündet mit dem Halbschluss H-dur in die ausgedehnte Sopran-Arie Quoniam tu solus Sanctus in e-Moll. Der kurze Chor Nr. 7 Cum Sancto Spiritu I (C-dur mit Halbschluss E-dur) ist nichts anderes als eine Andante-Introduktion zur virtuosen Schlussfuge Nr. 8 in a-moll auf den gleichen Text. Preface Along with Johann David Heinichen and Johann Adolf Hasse, Jan Dismas Zelenka can be considered one of the most important representatives of the Dresden Baroque. Born in Launiowitz (Louňovice), Bohemia, in 1679, he most likely took his first music lessons from his father, an organist. We know little about his early years, though presumably he studied at the Jesuit College in Prague. From 1710/11 until his death in 1745 he worked at the Dresden Hofkapelle, first as doublebass player and later as church-music composer. During a longer stay in Vienna in 1716–1719, he studied with the Imperial Court Kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux, especially focusing on the works of earlier masters as part of his studies. Upon returning to Dresden, Zelenka focused his activity above all on organizational and compositional duties for the Catholic services at the Dresden court.1 Some twenty mass settings by Zelenka, together with many other sacred works, have been preserved from the years between 1712 and 1741. The five late masses (ZWV 17–21), which Zelenka began writing in the second half of the 1730s, can clearly be distinguished from the early masses in musical idiom and conception. Audible here, for example, is the influence of the longtime Dresden court Kapellmeister Johann Adolf Hasse, especially pertaining to the design of the arias and orchestral ritornelli. The often highly expressive individual musical idiom is an achievement of Zelenka’s late style. The difference is also obvious from a glance at the scoring alone: in the late masses, he no longer uses any “large” scorings with trumpets and timpani, but rather the smaller standard setting of two oboes, violins, viola and basso continuo, only in the present mass enriched by flutes and a chalumeau.2 The Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis in honor of the Holy Trinity was composed by Zelenka in 1736.3 In the autograph score, there is only a remark on the completion of the Credo on All Saint’s Day; we can, however, safely assume by our knowledge of Zelenka’s writing and his creative process that the whole work was completed within a few weeks in the late autumn of 1736. An occasion for the composition is not recorded; whether Zelenka later saw it as part of his Missae ultimae, a cycle of six planned masses, cannot be said for sure today.4 The only remaining source is the autograph concept score,5 the old catalogue of the Sächsische Landes- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden also mentions orchestral parts that, however, have been lost since 1945. As Zelenka’s other late works, the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis is characterized by the balance of concerto- and motet-like or fugal choral movements. Part of the first are the expansive opening movements of the Gloria and the Credo, part of Zelenka’s typical fugues with an often chromatic main subject are the closing movements of Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Agnus Dei. The Dona nobis pacem is a literal resumption of the Kyrie (here: Kyrie eleison II), as usual for Zelenka and his con-

temporaries. Additional to the three arias of this mass, nos. 2, 6, and 15, there are a lyrical duet of male voices, no. 17, and a simple homophonic trio ensemble movement, no. 12. The orchestration in the solo movements is generally taken back, but especially so in the duet no. 17 in which tenor and bass are only accompanied by an oboe and a chalumeau, apart from a reduced continuo group. In Zelenka’s late works, the individual parts of the Ordinary are often defined by a musical or harmonic framework. In the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis, we can especially see this in the Gloria. Its five numbers form two complexes, nos. 4–6 and nos. 7–8: The concerto-like no. 4 in A minor with its unisono ritornello transitions with an imperfect cadence on E major directly into the strongly chromatic Qui tollis fugue in A minor (no. 5, mm. 1–32); with the Allegro (no. 5, mm. 33–58), the concertante music of no. 4 is taken up again but only seemingly concluded. In reality, the context remains open by way of the following Largo choral block with an ondeggiando accompaniment6 in which the miserere plea is renewed and intensified (no. 5, mm. 59–72). This part in turn leads with an imperfect cadence on B major into the expanded Quoniam aria of the Soprano in E minor. The brief chorus no. 7 Cum Sancto Spiritu I (C major with imperfect cadence on E major) is nothing else than an Andante introduction to the virtuoso closing fugue no. 8 in A minor on the same text.
