Anmerkungen des Verlages Seit über 100 Jahren ist die 25-bändige Ausgabe der Klavierwerke von Johann Sebastian Bach unter Federführung von Ferruccio Busoni erhältlich. Inzwischen selbst zu einem historischen Dokument der Bach-Rezeption geworden, wird sie trotz ihres Alters immer noch gerne – auch international – genutzt.

In den Erläuterungen „Zur Edition“ von Dr. Reinhard Ermen ist die wechselvolle Geschichte der Entstehung der Edition in groben Zügen dargestellt. Als eine Folge dieser Entwicklung weisen die Bände unterschiedliche Sprachkombinationen auf, und so erreichten den Verlag immer wieder Anfragen nach fehlenden englischen Übersetzungen.

Aus Anlass des 100. Todestages von Busoni werden diese nun ergänzt. Anmerkungen und Übersetzungen, die nicht in den Notenseiten selbst zu finden sind, liegen den Heften als Einleger bei, sodass sie parallel zum Notentext genutzt werden können.

Die bisher ausschließlich auf Deutsch vorliegenden Texte außerhalb der Noten wurden ebenfalls übersetzt.

Publishing-House Remarks The 25-volume edition of the Johann Sebastian Bach piano works under the aegis of Ferruccio Busoni has been available for over 100 years. Though it has meantime become in itself an historical document of Bach reception, it is still used with pleasure – even internationally – despite its age.

In his notes “About the Edition,” Dr. Reinhard Ermen has briefly outlined its eventful genesis. As a result of this development, the volumes feature various language combinations, and requests for lacking English translations have repeatedly reached the publishing house.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Busoni’s death, these translations are now being added. Annotations and translations not to be found in the music pages themselves are provided as inserts for use in tandem with the music text. The accompanying texts previously available exclusively in German have also been translated.

Zur Edition Am 4. Oktober 1909 schreibt Breitkopf & Härtel an Ferruccio Busoni, um ihn für eine Ausgabe der Klavierwerke Johann ­Sebastian Bachs zu gewinnen. Die Idee, dafür gerade bei ihm anzufragen, lag auf der Hand: Kein anderer hatte sich zu dieser Zeit so intensiv mit Bach beschäftigt. Als Pianist und Bearbeiter, als Theoretiker und Pädagoge war Busoni wesentlich ­daran beteiligt, den Meister vom 19. ins 20. Jahrhundert zu holen, also aus der virtuosen Tradition, deren Höhepunkte er noch selbst gesetzt hatte, in eine Handhabe der geistigen, intellektuellen Herausforderung. Dafür und noch für vieles mehr war ­Busoni längst weltberühmt, außerdem war er seit Anfang der 1880er Jahre ein Komponist, der sich bald sehr eng an das Haus Breitkopf binden sollte, selbstredend auch als Bearbeiter und Herausgeber. In der umfangreichen Korrespondenz mit seinem Verlag, deren mehr als 1550 Briefe seit 2012 gedruckt vorliegen, ist das besagte Anschreiben des Geheimrats Oskar von Hase (damaliger Gesellschafter und Geschäftsführer), die Nummer 500. Basis des Projektes sollte die Bach-Gesamtausgabe sein, die zwischen 1851 und 1899 unter der Federführung der Bachgesellschaft erschienen war – natürlich bei Breitkopf & Härtel. Die Zeichen standen in jeder Weise günstig, hier das Jahrhundertwerk der ersten Gesamtausgabe, bzw. daraus das Konzentrat der Klavierwerke, dort der anerkannte Prophet und Exeget, der den originalen Text mit den Zeichen seiner Praxis beleben sollte.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), der sich dem ehrenden Auftrag nicht entziehen will, ist um 1909 ein vielgefragter Pianist. Er schreibt gerade an seiner Oper Die Brautwahl und entwickelt darüber hinaus einen wachsenden Ehrgeiz als schaffender Künstler.

Der Rastlose hat eine Familie, außerdem betätigt er sich als Veranstalter und Dirigent einer eigenen Reihe von Orchesterkonzerten mit den Berliner Philharmonikern, für Breitkopf & Härtel arbeitet er intensiv an der kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Franz Liszt mit. Ziemlich schnell beruft er mit Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) und Egon Petri (1881–1962) zwei höchst unterschiedliche Mitarbeiter: Der eine, ein italienischer Erneuerer und Theoretiker des Klaviers, ist ein schneller Arbeiter, der lieber am Notentext selbst feilt, also an Tempoangaben, Bögen oder Fingersätzen, während ausführliche Kommentare eher selten zu finden sind. Der andere dagegen, der wichtigste Schüler Busonis und mit diesem seit vielen Jahren vertraut, bewegt sich ganz auf der Linie seines Lehrers. Er schreibt Vorworte und Fußnoten, und nicht nur Verzierungen werden angelegentlich diskutiert, sondern auch Textvarianten und kompositorische Details. Es geht schließlich um eine „instruktive“ Ausgabe, um ein praktisch fundiertes Lehrwerk. In einem Verlagsbrief vom Juli 1910 ist respektvoll-ironisch von einer „Bachhochschule“ die Rede. Ihre „Dozenten“, um im Bild zu bleiben, also die unterschiedlichen Zuträger, charakterisieren die besondere, durchaus abwechslungsreiche Darreichungsform dieser 25 Bände. Zeitgleich mit dem Klavierwerk versammelt Busoni, ebenfalls für Breitkopf, in sieben separaten Bänden seine anderen Bachversuche, und obwohl man diese viel weiter ausgearbeiteten Bearbeitungen und Transkriptionen bis hin zur monumentalen Fantasia Contrapuntistica vom kommentierenden, analysierenden Zugang der instruktiven Ausgabe deutlich trennen kann, sind für ihn selbst die Übergänge fließend. So hat er beispielsweise die Goldbergvariationen, die zwei Teile des Wohltemperierten Klaviers oder die Inventionen in bei-

den Ausgaben veröffentlicht. Möglicherweise denkt er zuallererst an Spielarten von Interpretation schlechthin, im Sinne einer ganz allgemein zu verstehenden Verlebendigung der Musik Bachs, die sich auf der einen Seite durch intensives Hineinhören in die klingenden Triebkräfte, auf der anderen Seite durch das Weiterdenken der gegebenen Angebote realisiert. In beiden Fällen spricht ein Kenner, der vor dem Publikum seine Erfahrungen ausbreitet.

Musikalische Erlebniszeit ist die Gegenwart, Ausblicke in die Zukunft sind nicht ausgeschlossen. Ein historistischer Aspekt, wie er heute fast schon selbstverständlich ist, liegt diesem wohlinformierten Interpreten fern.

Es hat relativ lange gedauert, bis die ersten Bände im Frühjahr 1916 erschienen. Im Januar 1912 starb unerwartet Bruno Mugellini in Bologna, immerhin hatte er bereits sechs Bände vorbereitet.

Die Hauptlast der Herausgabe ging immer mehr auf Egon Petri über, der mit 10 Bänden ein bedeutsames Pensum leistete, sein Vorwort zum sechsten Band, also den Französischen Suiten, ganz im Sinne Busonis geschrieben, darf in gewisser Weise als Credo zu dem gesamten Projekt gelten. Spiritus rector blieb aber bis zum Abschluss Busoni selbst, einmal abgesehen davon, dass in den neun von ihm verantworteten Bänden die entsprechenden Hauptwerke zu finden sind. Der 1. Weltkrieg erschwerte seit August 1914 die Arbeit. Solange Italien neutral blieb, war Busoni in Berlin eine respektierte Persönlichkeit, doch im Mai 1915 erklärte Italien Österreich-Ungarn den Krieg, im August 1916 auch dem Deutschen Reich. Busoni hatte Anfang 1915 freilich eine umfängliche Amerikatournee begonnen, mit dem Gedanken, das Ende des Krieges in der Neuen Welt abzuwarten. Das erwies sich als Illusion, weshalb er sich im Herbst 1915 ins neutrale Zürich zurückzog. Im säbelrasselnden Kaiserreich war er inzwischen eine partiell umstrittene Figur. Dass Breitkopf trotzdem zu ihm stand, spricht für die nach wie vor leuchtende Bachkompetenz, die mit seinem Namen verbunden war, aber auch für Liberalität und Weitsicht des Verlags. Die Korrespondenz Leipzig – New York – Zürich, der Informationsfluss, der ständige Austausch von Korrekturen war gelegentlich mühsam, und schließlich kam es noch zu einer deutlichen Trübung des freundschaftlichen Verhältnisses zu Egon Petri. Häufig fand ein Austausch zwischen Busoni und Petri nur über den Umweg des Lektorats bei Breitkopf & Härtel statt. Und als wäre das noch nicht genug, mussten die Rechte an Busonis Ausgabe des Wohltemperierten Klaviers (Teil 1) beim Verlag Schirmer in New York, wo diese Fassung 1894 erstmals herausgekommen war, umständlich erworben werden. Der Fall erwies sich in Kriegszeiten als so kompliziert, dass bis kurz vor Toresschluss Mugellinis Version, die bereits 1908/09 bei Breitkopf erschienen war und heute noch parallel lieferbar ist, als Band 1 disponiert wurde. Im Juli 1918 schickte Busoni die Stichvorlage für den letzten von ihm bearbeiteten Band 16 an den Verlag, die abschließenden Bände 10 und 25 von Petri erschienen jedoch erst im Mai 1923. Bedenkt man, dass die Inventionen, Busonis erfolgreichste instruktive Ausgabe, erstmals 1891 erschienen, so spiegeln sich in diesem Editionsprojekt mehr als 30 Jahre einer anspruchsvollen Bachrezeption, deren Grundzüge durch ihre reflektierte Evidenz heute noch vorbildlich erscheinen.

About the Edition On 4 Oc­tober 1909 Breitkopf & Härtel wrote to Ferruccio ­Busoni, hoping to gain his support for an edition of Johann ­Sebastian Bach’s piano works. Addressing him, in particular, was an obvious idea, as no one else had dealt at that time so intensively with Bach. As pianist and arranger, as theoretician and pedagogue, Busoni had been crucially involved in summoning the master from the 19th into the 20th century, out of the ­virtuoso tradition, whose apogees Busoni himself had set, into a means of handling the spiritual, intellectual challenge. For this and for much more, Busoni had long been world-famous; from the start of the 1880s, moreover, he had been a composer who was soon to be very closely tied to the Breitkopf house, also, of course, as arranger and editor. In the extensive correspondence with his publishing house, whose more than 1550 letters have been published since 2012, the letter in question from the privy councilor Oskar von Hase (then associate and managing director) is number 500. The project was to be based on the Bach Complete Edition, published between 1851 and 1899 under the auspices of the Bach Society – naturally, by Breitkopf & Härtel.

The signs were in every way favorable: here, the centenary work of the first complete edition, with its focus, in this case, on its ­piano works; there, the recognized prophet and exegete, who was to enliven the original text with the tokens of his praxis.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), who does not want to shirk the honorific commission, is a much sought-after pianist by 1909.

He is currently composing his opera Die Brautwahl and developing, furthermore, a growing ambition as a creative artist. Indefatigable, he has a family, besides being active as organizer and conductor of his own series of orchestral concerts with the Berlin Phil­harmonic and working intensively for Breitkopf & Härtel on the critical complete edition of the works of Franz Liszt.

He rather quickly appoints two profoundly different assistants, Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) and Egon Petri (1881–1962): The one, an Italian innovator and theoretician of the piano, is a fast worker, who prefers to work explicitly on the music text itself, thus, on tempo markings, slurs, or fingerings, whereas detailed annotations are rather rarely to be found. The other, by contrast, the most important of Busoni’s piano students and one with whom he has been familiar for many years, completely follows his teacher’s line. He writes prefaces and footnotes, extensively discussing not only ornamentation, but also text variants and compositional details. This is, after all, an “instructive” edition, a sound practical textbook. In a publishing-house letter of July 1910 there is a respectful if ironic mention of a “Bach college.”

Its “lecturers,” thus, the different contributors, characterize the special, indeed varied presentation of these 25 volumes. Concurrently with the piano work, Busoni also assembles his other Bach efforts in seven separate volumes, likewise for Breitkopf.

Although these much more elaborate arrangements and transcriptions, right up to the monumental Fantasia Contrapuntistica, can be clearly separated from the commenting, analyzing approach of the instructive edition, the transitions are fluent for him. He publishes, for example, the Goldberg Variations, the two parts of the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Inventions in both editions. He may possibly think first and foremost of the varieties

of interpretation par excellence, in the sense of a general, fully comprehensible enlivening of Bach’s music, realized, on the one hand, by intensive listening to the sounding driving forces, on the other hand, by conceptually extending the given. In both cases an authority is speaking, sharing his experiences with the public. The time of musical experience is the present, and outlooks into the future are not impossible. An historical aspect, as is already almost taken for granted today, is far from this extremely well-informed interpreter.

It was a relatively long time before the first volumes appeared in the spring of 1916. Bruno Mugellini died unexpectedly in ­Bologna in January 1912, after having already prepared six volumes. The main burden of the edition was increasingly passed on to Egon Petri, who, with 10 volumes, accomplished a significant task; his preface to the sixth volume, that is, the French Suites, written entirely in the spirit of Busoni, may certainly be regarded in some ways as the credo for the entire project.

But Busoni himself remained the guiding spirit until the end, apart from the fact that the relevant main works can be found in the nine volumes for which he was responsible. World War I had made work difficult since August 1914. As long as Italy remained neutral, Busoni was a respected figure in Berlin, but in May 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, and in August 1916 also on the German Reich. At the beginning of 1915, Busoni had indeed started an extensive tour of America with the idea of waiting out the war in the New World. This turned out to be an illusion, which is why he retired to neutral Zurich in autumn 1915. In the saber-rattling empire he was now a partially controversial figure. That Breitkopf, despite all, stood by him, speaks for the still shining Bach competence that was associated with his name, but also for the liberality and foresight of the publishing house. The Leipzig – New York – Zurich correspondence, the flow of information, the constant exchange of corrections was sometimes arduous, and eventually the formerly friendly relationship with Egon Petri clearly became clouded. Frequently, the exchange between Busoni and Petri took place only via the editorial department of Breitkopf & Härtel. And as if that were not enough, the rights to Busoni’s edition of the Well-Tempered Clavier (part 1) had to be laboriously acquired from the Schirmer publishing house in New York, where this version was first published in 1894. The case turned out to be so complicated in times of war that Mugellini’s version, which had already been published by Breitkopf in 1908/09 and is concurrently still ­available today, was scheduled as volume 1 up to shortly before the eleventh hour. In July 1918, Busoni sent the engraver’s model for volume 16, his last volume, to the publisher, yet the final ­volumes 10 and 25 by Petri appeared only in May 1923. Considering that the Inventions, Busoni’s most successful instructive edition, first appeared in 1891, this edition project thus mirrors more than 30 years of a sophisticated Bach reception, the basic features of which still appear exemplary today, thanks to their reflective evidence.

Des wohltemperierten Klavieres zweiter Teil1) Zwanzig Jahre hat Bach zwischen der Herausgabe des ersten und des zweiten Teils des wohltemperierten Klaviers verstreichen lassen, und es sind ungefähr an die zwanzig Jahre, seit ich selbst die Niederschrift meiner Betrachtungen über das Werk begann. Darum hat ein vernünftiger Leser zu erwarten, daß die Bearbeitung des zweiten Teils eine andere Physiognomie zeige als die des früheren; er muß selbst mit anderen Voraussetzungen und mit reiferer Vorbereitung diesen Band ergreifen.

In diesem vermied ich absichtlich Wiederholungen früherer Argumente, wandte mich vom rein Klavieristischen ab als von einem Gegenstand, der in den fünf vorausgehenden Bänden der Gesamtausgabe meiner Bach-Studien ausführlich zur Sprache gekommen war; ich verweilte nicht (oder kürzer) bei geringeren Einzelheiten, die von den Hauptmomenten ablenken, und bemühte mich vorzugsweise, den Lernenden zu den Mysterien der musikalischen Struktur und in das Innere zu führen.

Obwohl die Fuge, mit großem Aufwand von Würde, die strengste Form der musikalischen Komposition genannt wird, liegt – meines Erachtens – die Bedingung für die lebendige Erhaltung dieser Form darin, daß ihr die breitesten Freiheiten eingeräumt werden. Unter den Werken, die auf künstlerischen (nicht allein formalen) Wert Anspruch erheben, bin ich doch niemals auf eine absolut strenge Fuge gestoßen ; es schien mir vielmehr, als ob das Zunehmen der Freiheit mit dem Anstieg zur künstlerischen Höhe gleichen Schritt hielte.

Es gibt vielleicht keine Fuge, die nicht auf Augenblicke aufhörte, eine solche zu sein. Eine wahrhaft strenge Fuge wäre ein polyphones Gefüge, das von dem Thema nie abwiche und bei dem keine Stimme jemals pausierte. Dies wäre der ideelle Typus der strengen Fuge, an den noch kein Künstler sich bedingungslos gehalten hat: einem Vogel vergleichbar, der unausgesetzt in der Luft kreist.

Eben die Bachsche Fuge (diese ihm homogenste Form, Empfindung zu äußern) ist reich an Unregelmäßigkeiten und Ausnahmen. Die Theoretiker sind gezwungen, diese Vorkommnisse mit Verlegenheit zu nennen. Und wenn ich ihnen darin beistimmen muß, daß nur die meisterliche Überlegenheit solche Freiheitsrechte einräumt, so folgt daraus ebenso entschieden, daß die Meisterschaft nichts anderes erzielt als die Erwerbung dieser Rechte.

Die übernommenen Regeln für die Schreibweise der Fuge sind zum Teil praktischen, zum Teil symbolischen Ursprungs.

So ist die Bildung der „Antwort“ in Beziehung zu einem gedachten Modulationskreise gebracht.

Die Symbolik der Gesetze läßt sich in die Begriffe zusammenfassen: Harmonie im Kampf; Gleichberechtigung aller Beteiligten, die in dem Hauptgedanken sich vereinen.

Praktisches und symbolisches Endziel der Fuge: die Ausbeutung des Hauptgedankens bis zu dessen Erschöpfung.

In der heutigen Kompositionskunst, die in gerader Linie von der Bachs stammt (insofern als sie, immer bewußter, die durch Polyphonie tönende Empfindung zu werden sich bestrebt), fällt sowohl die nach dem Mittelpunkt des Modulationskreises gravitierende Richtung – die Abhängigkeit von der Tonart – als auch die objektive Symbolik aus dem Plan, die dem subjektiven Temperament gewichen ist. Somit sind auch die Rechte des

Meisters größer geworden: er darf nun die Bachschen Ausnahmen als Regeln übernehmen.

Die Form der Fuge wird zunächst immer von der Beschaffenheit des Themas abhängig sein. Bach deutet uns diese Wahrheit oft genug an, aber zuweilen zeigte er sich mit ihr im Widerspruch. Des Themas Triebkraft aber liegt in der Ausgiebigkeit und Wandlungsfähigkeit seiner selbst.

Der zweite Gestalter ist die geistige Idee, die die Fuge innerlich bewegt, und ein dritter: die Empfindungssphäre, die das Fortschreitende umhüllt.

Einem Beethoven war die Fuge nicht mehr der natürliche Ausdruck seiner Empfindung überhaupt, sondern ein gelegentliches Instrument, das für eine besondere Richtung der Empfindung zur Anwendung kam. Es ist denkbar, daß in der Fuge von heute das Kontrasubjekt über das Thema siegt, oder daß die Formen unmerklich in andere übergehen, sich auflösen anstatt sich zu verdichten, oder daß aus einer vielgestaltigen Bewegung das Thema als letztes Ergebnis tritt.

Unter den Fugen dieses Bandes stehen die in D-Dur und in E-Dur dem absoluten Typus am nächsten. Ich habe in meinen Anmerkungen die erste künstlerisch abgelehnt, die zweite rückhaltlos anerkannt, weil der Geist sich hier durch das Scholastische offenbart. Doch erweckte die in fis-Moll stehende Fuge in mir eine reinere Freude, trotzdem sie mancherlei thematische Zusammenstellungen, die ich in Beispielen dargetan habe, außer acht läßt, und weil sie aus dem Gedanken neue Formen ableitet. Die b-Moll-Fuge vereint die glücklichste Idee mit dem vollkommensten Bau zu einem unbedingten Meisterstück. Die Stücke in d-Moll, in e-Moll und in a-Moll repräsentieren die Macht des Temperaments über die Reflexion; die „Tanz-Fuge“ in B-Dur verbleibt eine einzelne Blüte der Anmut und der gemilderten Strenge.

Als polyphone Tanzstücke muten auch die Fugen in F-Dur und in f-Moll an, desgleichen das zu einem Springtanz ausholende dreistimmige Spiel in h-Moll. Eine einsame Stellung nimmt die Doppelfuge in gis-Moll ein, die bei großer Formenschönheit und innigster Einheit in der Abwechslung am gemütvollsten wirkt.

Das Verhältnis des obligaten Präludiums zur Fuge scheint mir nicht klar genug festgestellt zu sein; die Präludien des Wohltemperierten Klaviers machen es offenbar nicht leicht, in dieser Frage sicherer zu werden. Als Herausgeber habe ich einigen Fleiß daran gewandt, eine geschlossene Beziehung des Präludiums zur Fuge nachzuweisen, gelegentlich auch durch Beispiele herbeizuführen. In den letzteren Fällen glaube ich die Intentionen Bachs übertreten zu haben.

Alle Änderungen und Zutaten verfolgen indessen die erzieherische Absicht, den Lernenden einen Einblick in den Mechanismus der Komposition zu verschaffen; sie illustrieren und ergänzen überdies die in dieser Einleitung nur skizzenhaft dargelegten Anschauungen. In mehreren Fällen bildet die Summe der Anmerkungen zu verschiedenen Stücken erst die vollständige Meinung über eine und dieselbe Frage.

The Well-Tempered Clavier, second part1) Bach let twenty years elapse between the publication of the first and second parts of the Well-Tempered Clavier, and it is approximately twenty years since I myself began writing down my observations on the work. Reasonable readers should consequently expect that the treatment of the second part will show a different physiognomy from that of the earlier [part]; they themselves must take up this volume with other presuppositions and with a more mature preparation.

In this [volume] I deliberately avoided repetition of earlier arguments, turned away from the purely pianistic as a subject discussed in detail in the five previous volumes of the complete edition of my Bach studies; I did not dwell (or far less so) on minor details that distract from the main moments, and preferred to try to lead the learner to the mysteries of the musical structure and into the interior.

Although the fugue, with great effort at dignity, is called the strictest form of musical composition, the condition – in my opinion – for this form’s vibrant preservation is that it is granted the amplest freedom. Among the works laying claim to artistic (not just formal) value, I have never come across an absolutely strict fugue; rather, it seemed to me as if the increase in freedom kept pace with the increase in its artistic level.

There is perhaps no fugue that does not at moments cease to be such. A truly strict fugue would be a polyphonic structure that never deviated from the subject and in which no voice ever came to a rest. This would be the ideal type of the strict fugue, to which no artist has unconditionally adhered: comparable to a bird constantly circling in the air.

It is precisely the Bach fugue (this for him most homogeneous form of expressing emotion) that is rich in irregularities and exceptions. Theorists are forced to mention these occurrences with embarrassment. And if I must concur with them that only masterful superiority grants such rights of freedom, it follows just as decidedly that mastery ensures nothing other than the acquisition of these rights.

The rules adopted for the notation of the fugue are of partly practical, partly symbolic origin. The formation of the “answer” is thus related to an imagined modulation circle.

The symbolism of the laws can be summarized in the following terms: harmony in battle; equal rights for all those concerned who join forces in the main idea.

The ultimate practical and symbolic goal of the fugue: exploiting the main idea to the point of its exhaustion.

In today’s compositional art, stemming in a straight line from Bach (insofar as it is striving more and more purposely to become the sentiment sounding via polyphony), both the direction gravitating towards the center of the modulation circle – the dependence on the tonality – as well as the objective symbolism, which has yielded to the subjective temperament, depart from the plan. Hence, the rights of the master have also increased: he may now take over the Bach exceptions as rules.

The fugue’s form will initially always depend on the nature of the subject. Bach often enough intimates this truth to us, though contradicting it at times. The subject’s driving force lies, how­ ever, in its amplitude and versatility.

The second shaping aspect is the intellectual idea inwardly moving the fugue, and a third: the emotional sphere enveloping what is progressing.

For a Beethoven the fugue was no longer the natural expression of his emotion in general, but an occasional instrument to be used for a particular emotional direction. It is conceivable that in today’s fugue the countersubject triumphs over the subject, or that the forms pass imperceptibly into others, dissolving instead of condensing, or that the subject emerges from a multifaceted motion as its final result.

Among the fugues in this volume, those in D major and E major are closest to the absolute type. In my remarks I artistically rejected the first and unreservedly acknowledged the second, because the mind reveals itself here through what is scholastic. But the fugue in F sharp minor awakened in me a purer joy despite the fact that it disregards various thematic combinations that I have presented in examples, and because it derives new forms from the idea. The B-flat minor fugue combines the happiest idea with the most perfect structure to create an unconditional masterpiece. The pieces in D minor, E minor, and A minor represent the power of temperament over reflection; the “Dance Fugue” in B flat major remains a single blossom of grace and tempered rigor.

The fugues in F major and F minor, too, appear as polyphonic dance pieces, as does the B minor play in three voices, striking out into a leaping dance. The double fugue in G sharp minor occupies a lonely position, which, with great beauty of form and the most intimate unity in variety, has the most warm-hearted effect.

The relation of the obligatory prelude to the fugue does not seem to me to have been clearly enough established; the preludes of the Well-Tempered Clavier do not seem to make it easier to become more confident in this matter. As editor, I have made a great effort to demonstrate a close relationship between the prelude and the fugue, and at times to bring this about through examples. In the latter cases, I believe I have transgressed Bach’s intentions.

All alterations and additions, though, pursue the educational purpose of giving the learners an insight into the compositional mechanism; they also illustrate and supplement the views outlined in this introduction. In several instances, the sum of the comments on various pieces only generates the complete view of one and the same question.

Anmerkungen zu Busonis Terminologie im Wohltemperierten Klavier Allgemein: Busonis Texte sind über 100 Jahre alt, der Sprachgebrauch hat sich seitdem verändert. Dies sollte man berücksichtigen, vor allem, wenn Formulierungen z. T. seltsam oder sogar unverständlich erscheinen. Bestimmte Wörter werden heute nur noch in einem anderen Zusammenhang gebraucht oder ihre Bedeutung hat sich verschoben bzw. ist nahezu obsolet, manchmal auch nur die von Busoni gemeinte Konnotation.

Dies betrifft auch in einigen wenigen Fällen die Fachterminologie. Daher hier einige Hinweise zum leichteren Verständnis (ein Blick in die Noten erschließt aber in der Regel die Bedeutung).

vor- und nachschlagen: Busoni meint damit nicht das Anschlagen von Noten vor oder nach dem eigentlichen Schlag, sondern das Spielen eine Passage mit alternierenden Händen: der erste Ton (Intervall/Akkord) mit der einen Hand auf dem Schlag, der zweite mit der anderen danach, der dritten wieder wie der erste usw.

blinde Intervalle/Akkorde: Damit bezeichnet Busoni beim Spielen von Passagen mit alternierenden Händen (siehe „vor-und nachschlagend“) eine Abfolge von Intervallen oder Akkorden, bei der eine Hand nur einstimmig, die andere aber zwei- bzw. mehrstimmig spielt. Das weicht von dem ab, was heute im Englischen mit „blind octave“ bezeichnet wird.

Pedalbezeichnungen: In Heft IV zum Wohltemperierten Klavier Teil I geht Busoni ausführlicher auf die Pedale und den Pedalgebrauch ein, und erwähnt dabei verschiedene Bezeichnungen, die hier zusammengefasst sind. Zu beachten ist, dass in der Regel das mittlere Pedal eines Klaviers eine andere Funktion hat als das mittlere Pedal eines Flügels. Die von Busoni notierten Beispiele, in denen explizit auf das mittlere Pedal verwiesen wird, sind daher auf dem Klavier so nicht umsetzbar. a) Dämpferpedal = I. Annotations to Busoni’s Terminology in the Well-Tempered Clavier In general: Busoni’s texts are over 100 years old, and the use of language has changed since then. This should be taken into account, especially if some of the formulations seem strange or even incomprehensible. Certain words are used today only in a different context or their meaning has shifted or is almost obsolete, sometimes only the connotation meant by Busoni.

This also affects the technical terminology in a few cases. Therefore, here are some hints for easier understanding (a look into the notes, however, usually reveals the meaning).

alternating / anticipation (or leading) and after-striking [German: vor- und nachschlagen] Here, Busoni does not mean the playing of notes shortly before or after the beat but the execution of a passage with alternating hands: the first note (intervall/chord) with one hand on the beat, the second with the other hand after the beat, the third again as the first, and so forth. Therefore, we use „alternating“ in the modern translation.

simulated [German: blind]: In German, the term „blind“ combined with an intervall or chords is rarely known and Busoni used it for a slightly different playing technique as it is associated with in English. As „simulated“ as an English translation from Busonis time can be found in one of the editions, we adopted this term in the modern translation. In all cases, the meaning is obvious in the music samples.

Pralltriller/Mordent: We use always „upper mordent“ for a Pralltriller and „lower mordent“ for a Mordent.

Pedal names In volume IV of the first part of the Well-tempered Clavier, Busoni describes the pedales and their usage in more detail, and different names are mentioned, which are compiled here. It should be kept in mind that usually the middle pedal of an upright piano has a different function than the middle pedal of a grand piano. Busoni’s music samples, which explicitly mention the pedal III, are therefore not realizable on an upright piano. a) sustaining (damper) pedal = pedal I, also: large pedal, right pedal, loud pedal, T b) the una corda pedal = pedal II, also: soft pedal, sordino pedal, left pedal c) the sostenuto pedal = pedal III, also: prolongation pedal, suspension pedal, middle pedal. (In the text and some music samples, the historic translation gives “sustaining pedal” for this pedal – which from today’s point of view is not correct, as it now stands for the right pedal. Busoni’s labeling “III. T” is unequivocal, though.)

Praeludium VIII p. 13: Idea: 1) Appearing at the end of the first part are thirty-second-note figures that continue to assume a leading role in the motion.

The prelude’s initial conduct, which could easily be perceived as an allegro piece, is led to the appropriate broadness of tempo by virtue of these denser rhythms; hence the heading Molto tranquillo. The piece belongs in every respect to the genre of inventions. p. 14: 2) That the theme in the second part of the piece is based on the dominant-seventh chord instead of the triad is to be understood as a kind of inversion (this time of the harmonic genre).

As a rule, it is the contrary motion that opens the second part. p. 15: 3) If the bar lines had not crept into the notation as a necessary evil, this half measure would not have been squeezed in to fill out the measure. Bach was reluctant to interpolate here a 2/4 measure; for the setting would otherwise have thus been the natural one: Fuga VIII p. 16: 1) The subject actually extends to the third eighth note of the third measure, though the last two notes are treated less strictly over the course of the fugue.

2) Once again, an example of chromatic counterpoint whose and which retains almost the importance simple formula is: of an obligatory countersubject until the first section of the second part is completed. The beautiful, expanding and canonic bass variant of the same countersubject at the end of the second development could have been strictly worked out chromatically:

p. 19: 1) The editor was reluctant to note special performance nuances unmistakably arising from the voices’ advancing and receding and the line’s rising and falling, though he presupposes that a reasonable economy of this is observed. p. 20: NB. Before reaching the half cadence, marked with a double bar line, the subject disappears from the first part after the complete entry of the fourth voice. Considered more precisely, it is still found twice in the ornamentation leading to the second part, just as a head can occasionally be recognized in arabesques. To document this, we execute from the eleventh measure onwards what has been indicated: The second part consists of a complete and a more-than-complete development, the first of these is limited in turn by a half cadence at which the second concurrently begins, in order to close in the parallel key. An episode, created from subject fragments, leads back to the tonic, after which the subject appears in the character of an organ-pedal voice Organ At the end, the tenor brings the subject in contrary motion, concurrently with the soprano’s original. The fact that Bach did not use the inversion by itself can probably be interpreted thus that he did not find this motif form beautiful; for in the mirroring, not every subject takes on a pleasing appearance.

At work here are traceable and covert laws. It is true that a music motif can be artificially constructed, its laws can be determined; but, fortunately, the most common motifs owe their origin to inspiration. Even if the significance of the term, which is indispensable in the word, disappears in the inversion of the music motif, it always still remains to be seen whether the loss brings to light a musical meaning and something well-shaped.

The inversion, moreover, occurs in a different way than in the word, namely, through a symmetrical divergence of the intervals from a given point (water reflection, vertical inversion, spatial inversion); the absolute inversion, the mirror writing (horizontal inversion, temporal inversion) makes the motif for the ear and even for the eye just as unrecognizable as if one were to read the word “organism” as “msinagro.” Hence, the stupidity of the crab canon, when it appears as nothing more than a theory transferred into practice. The stricter symmetrical inversion, as taught by B. Ziehn, requires that the interval size be observed, that the imitation become at the same time the transposition. p. 21:

Two other variants occur, identified as * and **. The latter (soprano), in diminution and in the inversion according to the formula is probably not intended. (Compare the comments on the fugues in C sharp minor and A flat major.)
