Vorwort Der böhmische Bach-Zeitgenosse Jan Dismas Zelenka gilt neben Johann David Heinichen und Johann Adolf Hasse als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Dresdner Barock. Johann Sebastian Bach kannte Zelenka persönlich und soll ihn, laut Aussage seines Sohnes Carl Philipp Emanuel, sehr geschätzt haben.

Zelenka wurde 1679 im böhmischen Launowitz (heute: Lunovic̀´e) als Sohn eines Organisten geboren. Über seine Jugendjahre weiß man wenig. Vermutlich war er Schüler am Prager Jesuitenkollegium. Ab 1710/11 bis zu seinem Tode 1745 wirkte er – zunächst als Kontrabassist, später als Kirchenkomponist – an der Dresdner Hofkapelle.

Während eines längeren Wien-Aufenthaltes in den Jahren 1716–1719 nahm er Unterricht beim kaiserlichen Hofkapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux und setzte sich im Rahmen seiner Studien intensiv mit den Werken älterer Meister auseinander. Nach seiner Rückkehr an den Dresdner Hof konzentrierte sich Zelenkas Tätigkeit vor allem auf organisatorische und kompositorische Arbeiten für den katholischen Hofgottesdienst. Einen Schwerpunkt bildeten dabei seine über zwanzig Messkompositionen.

Zelenkas letzte drei Messvertonungen, von ihm selbst als Missae ultimae („letzte Messen“) bezeichnet, können mit Fug und Recht als Höhepunkt seines kirchenmusikalischen Schaffens angesehen werden.

Den einzelnen Titelangaben zufolge war vom Komponisten ursprünglich ein Zyklus von sechs Missae ultimae geplant, von denen allerdings nur die erste, zweite und sechste überliefert sind1. Da es keinerlei Hinweise darauf gibt, dass die drei fehlenden Nummern verlorengegangen sein könnten, ist angesichts der guten Überlieferungslage von Zelenkas Werken davon auszugehen, dass der Zyklus ein Torso geblieben ist.

Bei der Missa Dei Filii handelt es sich um die zweite dieser „letzten Messen“ (Missa ultimarum secunda).

Die erste, die Missa Dei Patris, wurde am 21. September 1740 vollendet, das Gloria der letzten (Missa Omnium Sanctorum) trägt als Datum den 3. Februar 1741. Somit kann angenommen werden, dass die Missa Dei Filii in der Zeit zwischen September 1740 und Februar 1741 komponiert wurde.

Im Gegensatz zu den beiden anderen Missae ultimae, bei denen es sich um vollständige Messtextvertonungen handelt, besteht die Missa Dei Filii nur aus Kyrie und Gloria. In diesem Zusammenhang ist der Umstand von Bedeutung, dass das letzte im Auto-

graph enthaltene Stück, nämlich die Schlussfuge des Gloria (Cum Sancto Spiritu II), nicht vollständig fertiggestellt, sondern streckenweise lediglich skizziert wurde. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass die restlichen Messteile nie komponiert wurden und dass Zelenka zwar auch hier wohl eine vollständige Messkomposition geplant, aber nie vollendet hat. Ob die Fertigstellung des Werkes möglicherweise durch einen geschwächten Gesundheitszustand des Komponisten verhindert wurde oder ob dabei gar die Sorge eine Rolle gespielt haben mag, den bereits gesetzten hohen ästhetischen Maßstäben in der Folge nicht mehr genügen zu können, ist heute nicht mehr nachvollziehbar und muss Spekulation bleiben.

Während das Kyrie vergleichsweise kurz ausfällt – der Eingangschor Kyrie eleison umfasst nur 17 Takte und wird nach der Sopranarie (Christe eleison) wörtlich wiederholt –, hat Zelenka das Gloria umfangreich angelegt und kunstvoll ausgeführt. So flicht er z. B. im ersten Satz des Gloria an exponierter Stelle wirkungsvoll ein musikalisches Zitat der gregorianischen Intonation ein, wodurch die zentrale Bedeutung des entsprechenden Textes („Gloria in excelsis Deo“) nachdrücklich ins Bewusstsein gerückt wird.

Zugleich kunstfertig als auch strukturell sinnstiftend ist des Weiteren der Bezug, den Zelenka zwischen den beiden Ecksätzen des Gloria schafft, indem er in der Schlussfuge (Cum Sancto spiritu II) das „laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te“ des ersten GloriaSatzes als Kontrasubjekt wiederverwendet und zudem in der Schlusssteigerung dessen Ritornell zwischen zwei Unisono-Einsätzen des Fugenthemas nochmals erklingen lässt.

Der Klavierauszug von Matthias Grünert basiert auf der von Paul Horn in Band 100 des Erbe deutscher Musik herausgegebenen quellenkritischen Partiturausgabe, in welcher die im Autograph gegen Ende des Gloria bestehenden Notentextlücken behutsam ergänzt wurden. Preface Bach’s Bohemian contemporary Jan Dismas Zelenka is regarded next to Johann David Heinichen and Johann Adolf Hasse as one of the foremost representatives of the Dresden Baroque. Johann Sebastian Bach knew Zelenka personally and – according to Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel – is said to have held him in high esteem.

Zelenka was born the son of an organist in the Bohemian town of Launowitz (today: Lunovic̀´e) in 1679. Little is known about his early years, although it is likely that he studied at Prague’s Jesuit College.

He worked from 1710/11 until his death in 1745 at the Dresden Hofkapelle, first as double bass player, later as church-music composer.

During a lengthier stay in Vienna in the years 1716–1719, he took lessons from the Imperial Court Kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux and, as part of his studies, meticulously analyzed the works of the past masters. Upon his return to the Dresden court, he concentrated above all on organizational and compositional work for the Catholic court religious service. One of his main focuses was his output of over 20 masses.

Zelenka’s last three mass settings, which he himself called Missae ultimae (“last Masses”), can truly be seen as the climax of his sacred-music œuvre. According to the individual titles, the composer had originally planned a cycle of six Missae ultimae, of which, however, only the first, second and sixth have been transmitted.1 Since there are no clues suggesting that the three missing numbers might be lost, one can assume that, in view of the satisfactory transmission status of Zelenka’s works, the cycle remained a torso.

The Missa Dei Filii is the second of these “last Masses” (Missa ultimarum secunda). The first, the Missa Dei Patris, was completed on 21 September 1740, and the Gloria of the last (Missa Omnium Sanctorum) bears the date 3 February 1741. It is thus likely that the Missa Dei Filii was composed between September 1740 and February 1741.

Contrary to the two other Missae ultimae, for which we have complete mass text settings, the Missa Dei Filii consists only of a Kyrie and Gloria. It is important to note, however, that the last movement contained in the autograph, the closing fugue of the Gloria (Cum Sancto Spiritu II), was not fully

written out. Some of it was only sketched, which probably means that the other mass sections were never composed; in all likelihood, Zelenka was also planning a complete mass here, but never saw the work through to the end. We can only speculate as to whether the completion of the work was prevented by health problems or whether he feared that he would no longer be able to meet the already high aesthetic standards which he had set himself in the previous works.

Whereas the Kyrie is relatively brief – the opening Kyrie eleison chorus comprises only 17 measures and is repeated word for word after the soprano aria (Christe eleison) – Zelenka lays out the Gloria on a grand scale and fashions it with great skill. For example, he effectively interweaves a musical quote from the Gregorian psalm tone at an exposed passage in the first movement of the Gloria, thus drawing the listener’s attention to the central importance of the corresponding text (“Gloria in excelsis Deo”). Another example of a well-conceived and structurally determinant connection is the one that Zelenka creates between the two outer sections of the Gloria, where in the closing fugue (Cum Sancto spiritu II) he again turns to the “laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te” of the first section of the Gloria as a countersubject; in addition, he repeats its ritornello again between two unison entries of the fugal subject in the closing build-up.

Matthias Grünert’s piano vocal score is based on the critical edition of the score edited by Paul Horn in volume 100 of the Erbe deutscher Musik, in which the gaps in the musical text found in the autograph towards the end of the Gloria were cautiously supplemented.
