a warm welcome These free lunchtime concerts are brought to you by Breathe Arts Health Research in partnership with Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity. As spring takes a firm hold we bring you a lively season of performers to help you shake off the last of those winter blues and truly lift your spirits. We begin with a real bang with some fiery Flamenco to set the scene and then strum, pluck, sing, swing and samba our way through the season with a range of performances and events to inspire and captivate you. So come along, bring your lunch and watch and enjoy some truly world class performers in the unique setting of Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Our Performers April 2014 The Sugar Kings Monday 7th April Driven by the spirit of 1950’s Cuba, The Sugar Kings present vocal harmonies from the salons of Havana to the rhythms of the Cuban countryside. Join Flavio and his band for some of the sweetest sounds around town.
The Ballina Whalers Monday 14th April The Ballina Whalers are Pete Truin, Jamie Doe and Sam Brookes — three musical barnacles clinging to the creaking hull of a musical tradition stretching back hundreds of years. Using their voices they explore ballads, shanties and seafaring songs that tell tales of whaling, lost loves and hardship out at sea.

South London Saxophone Quartet Monday 28th April Duke Ellington’s Birthday / International Dance Day The rich sounds and catchy rhythms of the South London Saxophone Quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) will get your feet tapping to some of the greats from the Jazz and Swing era. With Duke Ellington’s birthday on April 29th, some of his best loved tunes will be interspersed with those from other favourites including Gershwin.

Natalie Coyle Monday 12th May Florence Nightingale’s Birthday / International Nurses’ Day Classically trained Soprano, Natalie joined Classic BRIT Award winners BLAKE at the end of their 2012 UK tour. She has performed several times at Wembley Stadium to sold-out crowds of over 85,000 — and most recently for England at the Rugby League World Cup, where she sang the National Anthem. Natalie is Patron of Breathe.
Bowjangles Monday 19th May Bowjangles combine virtuosic string quartet performance with classy vocals, hilarious comedy and energetic dance moves in shows which hark back to the good old days of Music Hall Variety, when talent was truly multidimensional. Fun, clever, full of pop & classical hits & satire.

City of London Sinfonia Monday 2nd June London Creativity and Wellbeing Week To celebrate London Creativity and Wellbeing Week we are absolutely delighted to once again welcome back a string quartet from the world famous City of London Sinfonia who will play a mixed programme of classical and light classical music plus well known songs from the shows.
Wandering Hands Monday 9th June Cutting loose from the tangle of wires and amps of a regular covers band, Wandering Hands are a talented, energetic trio who bound around between performing crowd pleasing versions of hits. Their infectious enthusiasm mixed with a vast repertoire is guaranteed to give an electrifying atmosphere and unmatched feeling of spontaneity.
Barber & Armer Monday 16th June Singer and songwriter Kevin Barber writes about loss, regret, hope and eternity. He is a story teller who crosses many musical boundaries as he performs and amuses his audiences with beautifully crafted songs and anecdotes on life. Kevin’s guitar picking is interwoven with the sensitive harmonica and mandolin playing of Eddie Armer.
The London Essentials Monday 23rd June The Essentials are a collective of five nomadic musicians, cosmically united in London in 2010 by their irrepressible calling to entertain the masses. Performing completely acoustically, the band require no amplification or stage, preferring instead to mingle with their audience — engaging, serenading, flattering, surprising, embarrassing and seducing their listeners as they go.
Carapino Trio Monday 30th June Our on-going collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music continues with a programme of works given by three of their highly talented students. The Carapina Trio formed in 2011 and are growing in both stature and repertoire. Today’s concert will include pieces by Massenet, Saint Saens and Bartok.

Akua Tu Wednesday 9th April Akua Tu’s songs have been described as like nothing ever heard before. With haunting vocal melodies influenced by Jazz, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, and World music, her cleverly woven, thought provoking lyrics weave their way through unpredictable chord progressions, creating a new sound and genre called Ethereal Soul.

May 2014 Litsa Tunnah with Petr Limonov Wednesday 7th May Tchaikovsky’s Birthday Litsa Tunnah is quickly establishing a reputation as a virtuoso concert violinist. Since making her concerto debut at the age of 12 Litsa has appeared as soloist with major orchestras including Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Kensington Sinfonia, St Bartholomew Chamber Orchestra, London International Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Alexander Karpeyev Wednesday 14th May Mental Health Awareness Week Russian pianist Alexander Karpeyev has been a major prize winner at many national and international competitions. He makes a welcome return to Guy’s Hospital to perform a mixed programme including pieces by Medtner and Schumann.
Yuri Sabatini with Kirstin Sharpin & Nadia Lasserson Wednesday 21st May The beautiful tones of Italian tenor Yuri Sabatini will captivate you as he teams up with fabulous soprano Kirstin Sharpin and world class pianist Nadia Lasserson to offer you a variety of popular operatic arias and show tunes as well as some lesser well known ‘art’ songs.
Montgomery Duo Wednesday 28th May Deaf Awareness Week Father and Daughter Duo Ruth and Roger Montgomery, bring a new and exciting programme of tuneful flute and guitar compositions by Roger plus arrangements of film music by John Williams, the tango king Astor Piazzolla and the Beatles.
June 2014 Breathe Harp Ensemble Wednesday 4th June London Creativity & Wellbeing Week Come and experience the mesmerising sound of a harp ensemble. The performance is given by Breathe’s resident harpists who usually play solo in the wards and clinical spaces around the two hospitals but who have joined together for a unique and special concert.
Sambossa Wednesday 11th June World Cup Celebrations Sambossa present all the sounds & rhythms of Brazil in a small band format. Compact but very powerful, with music ranging from sultry bossa nova & grooving afrofunk to blistering samba. Perfect to get us in the mood for the World Cup!
The Rob Luft Trio Wednesday 18th June Take your seats and relax and come listen to a selection of jazz classics from the Great American Songbook, featuring historic works from North American composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern plus some more mellow contemporary treats by John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Harriet Mackenzie & Morgan Szymanski Wednesday 25th June International soloists violinist Harriet Mackenzie and guitarist Morgan Szymanski perform together in an exciting duo with a beautiful repertoire from classical Spanish and latin American composers. Today’s programme will include works by Vivaldi, Piazzolla, Bach, De Falla, Paganini, Bartok and Ponce.

Breathe Magic 10 day Summer Camps are a well-researched and highly effective therapy programme where children learn specially selected magic tricks designed to help them increase the use of their affected hand and arm. The tricks can be adapted or scaled to make them easier or more challenging according to individual needs. Renowned Magic Circle magicians work alongside occupational therapists, in a 1:1 setting to teach magic tricks and performing skills which develop motor and bimanual skills and considerably enhance confidence and self-esteem.
