Oriana

Senior Capstone Spring 2023

A set of tools designed to encourage the utilization of reusable containers accompanied by a practice of being reflective, deliberate, and considerate.

4

The set of tools is intended to be used in a specific practice that asks the individual to be mindful and take the time to pack their snacks. The material choice of ceramic, brass, and cork asks the person using the objects to value and take care of them.

I ended up making 12 small containers with corresponding lids each one being slightly different in shape and color. I experimented with various glazes and textures that resulted in the unique final pieces.

223 Picnic Basket

Spring 2022

A picnic basket for two consisting of a set of wooden boxes that are secured and transported in a blanket that ties together. The colors and shapes of the boxes corresponds with the blanket and the experience of using the objects involved a mapping sequence when setting up the picnic.

The boxes and blanket originated from deconstructing and reconstructing a cube to get the rectangular forms. The boxes fit together to create a cube and the design of the blanket has a corresponding fabric shape for each lid and base of the boxes.

The wood and cotton fabric were colored with natural dyes derived from ingredients such as turmeric and black beans.

@cardboard.series

Fall 2021

Experimenting with cardboard as a material source and developing recipes with natural glues to make a clay-like mixture used for making various vessels.

8
Collaboration with Dami Bae

The testing phases of the cardboard mixtures included experimenting with different techniques such as compressing, hand building, and sculpting over existing forms. The different natural glue recipes used resulted in mixtures that took on varying colors and textures when dry. The final pieces are durable and are completely biodegradable at the end of its usage.

Patchwork Tote

Spring 2019

A folding portable tote bag made from fabric scraps sourced from the projects of fashion students and Fabscrap. This tote was proposed to be created as a product for the school’s store.

The smaller bag that fits the tote features an embroidered school logo. The tag for the bag includes illustrated folding instructions for the user. This prototype was hand and machine sewn and has an inner lining for added strength and hiding the seams of the patchwork.

The inspiration for this project came from finding an abundance of fabric scraps and the desire to use them as a material source for new products to turn waste into something functional.

Non-Ferrous Metal Fabrication

Working with brass and copper, I fabricated jewelry and functional pieces entirely out of metal. All the components began in sheet or wire form and were manipulated through sawing, forming, and soldering to create the necklace and box.

12

Wax Carving Metal Casting

The ability to carve the soft material of wax and receive it back in metal was extremely rewarding so I made many pieces that looked at fluidity, symmetry, and the communication of personal messages.

I made several rings in sterling silver and constructed small charms for necklaces or additional elements to fabricate onto rings.

13

Crochet + Hand Knitting

Experimenting with yarn thickness and hook size lead to the created of a micro-crochet jewelry collection that explores the ability to hold and contain other objects.

The ability to create usable objects with yarn sparked personal projects that used different crochet techniques to fabricate bags and pouches.

14

Machine Knitting

Developing my own two-toned pattern for the machine that was then used to make a hat. The design is inherently symmetrical and repeatable allowing for the creation of larger swatches.

Below are various swatches created with techniques on the knitting machine that experiment with texture, color, and patterns.

These vessels were all hand thrown on the wheel and the shapes explore the opportunities to create asymmetry with a making process that asks for symmetry and proper centering. I also wanted to explore the spontaneity and mystery of glazes that are a complete surprise when they come out of the kiln.

Ceramics

This woodblock print was inspired by the childhood snacks and foods that I grew up with and pays homage to the nostalgia that I feel when eating them. It began with a sketch that was then transferred to a block of MDF which was hand carved using special tools. The final design was printed with three different colors to create a series.
