Designed to be a tool to encourage the utilization of reusable containers accompanied by a practice of being reflective, deliberate, and considerate.
Thesis Prompt: Focusing on re-imagining how we interact with the objects around us and the lifestyle it promotes.
Goal: Encourage the usage of reusable containers within an individual’s daily life.
Skills Utilized: Ceramics, Slip Casting, Glazing, 3D Printing, 3D modeling, Prototyping, User Testing
Creating a mindmap of goals that want to be met and starting with sketches and quick paper models of containers.
After coming up with several design iterations out of clay, I asked people to test out the shapes and listened to their feedback.
Then I took the data from this testing to inform my final design which I modeled and 3D printed to use to make my mold for slip casting the ceramics.
A picnic basket designed for two people to engage them in the experiencing in setting up and leaving a picnic. The basket highlights the use of natural dyes to connect with nature when having a picnic outside.
Prompt: Design a picnic basket for two people that encapsulates a joined experience facilitated through objects.
Goal: Creating an experience in which people start and end their picnic in a meditative experience involving the various components of the basket including the fabric and boxes.
Skills Utilized: Woodworking, Sewing, Textiles, Natural Dies, 3D modeling/prototyping
The initial design came from the idea of deconstructing and reconstructing a cube which was actualized in the form of wooden boxes and a patchwork blanket.
A project to re-purpose a waste material into products that can be used in the home. Experiments with cardboard resulted in a series of tabletop wares.
Prompt: Use a source of waste materials as the main component for designing and making new products.
Goal: Taking cardboard used for packaging to create a paper pulp that can then be mixed into a clay to make tabletop goods for the home while taking the entire life cycle of the product into consideration.
Skills Utilized: Woodworking, Materials Experimentation + Research, Ceramics, CNC Machining, 3D modeling
To change the form of the reclaimed cardboard, the material was shredded and mixed with natural glues to create a mixture that could be formed like clay. Different combinations resulted in various textures and consistencies.
The clay mixtures were used to make different tableware vessels like containers, bowls, and candle holders.
In order to add a dimension of manufacturing to the line of products, I designed a set of wooden lids for each of the containers that were cut using a CNC machine and finished by hand.
Each container was made using a mold that would fit the lid perfectly. The lids were cut out of a piece of pine lumber and finished with a coat of varnish.
Using explorations with color, form, and texture to create an alphabet of materials that result in unique lighting fixtures that display secret messages.
- Spring 2021
Prompt: Use a painting as inspiration for designing a lighting fixture.
Goal: Create an alphabet inspired by the textures, colors, and feelings of Basquiat’s painting Beef Ribs Longhorn that can be used to spell out messages while also creating unique visual patterns and shadows.
Skills Utilized: Material Exploration, Experimental Typography, 3D prototyping, 3D modeling, 3D rendering, Fusion 360
The beginning phases of the project started with sketches and quick explorations with paper and other objects that were inspired by the original painting.
After that came 3D explorations and experimenting with different forms of lighting fixtures.
The explorations resulted in a series of objects that were to be placed in acrylic containers. Each of the objects corresponded with a letter which could then be attached together to form words and messages. Light from behind would cast shadows on surfaces created by the material explorations inside each capsule.
The final lighting fixtures would each be unique depending on the words and messages that each client would request.
These renderings are examples of how the lighting fixtures could be installed and the different ways they may look with longer and shorter phrases.
In a metal fabrication and a jewelry course, I learned how to make various objects with brass and copper. Different techniques were used to assemble and finish each piece.
In the jewelry course I learned how to make chains and pendents from metal sheets, rods, wires. We also touched upon wax carving to make rings that we sent to get casted. The castings were then cleaned and finished with final embellishments attached before polishing.
- Wheel-Throwing
In printmaking I learned screen printing and wood block techniques. Above is the screen printing process that showcases a two layered design to create a poster.
To the right is wood block carving that starts with a transfered design that is then carved out of a piece of MDF board. Ink is then rolled on and the block is placed on a piece of paper to reveal the design.
During this machine knitting course I learned how to create textiles with yarn on a Silver Reed SK280 Domestic Knitting Machine. We learned how to create patterns and different types of clothing and accessories.
We also touched upon understanding how garments are made and constructed.
