an women really have it all?

This “Women in Business” issue of Who’s Who Magazine in Nashville and Williamson County focuses on eight women who not only can…they DO have it all! Their businesses are successful; their products and services are positively impacting Nashville and the surrounding area; and their families – in several unique ways – play a part in their accomplishments.

Some of these amazing ladies have built businesses from the ground up, while others have made wise choices in selecting franchises with which to align themselves. Regardless of the goods or services they offer, these women have cultivated an atmosphere of teamwork and respect within their distinctive environments, and we are proud that they call Nashville “home.”

The team at Molly Maid of South Davidson, Williamson, Hamilton and Maury Counties combines family and careers.

At the helm of the main branch in Franklin is Melissa Farrar; her daugh-

ter is President of their Chattanooga office; and her daughter-in-law is a sales consultant and office manager in their Nashville office. Melissa and her husband, Scott, built their business as a team effort on the foundation of “integrity, honesty, respect and responsibility.” To them, relationships are paramount and teamwork is vital. This dynamic family group strives to make “Every Clean Count” – both in your home and in their community.

Marriage and careers are combined at Tax Planning and Defense, APLC, too.

Ernest and Jennie Smith-Howard partner with each other – and you – to plan for and cover all of your tax issues from start to finish. There is no “one-sizefits-all” mentality here; Jennie and Ernest recognize that every individual has unique situations which need to be addressed by an experienced tax attorney.

These New Orleans natives who moved to Nashville after Hurricane Katrina are especially well-prepared to handle tax matters that accompany tragic or

disastrous situations; in their case, the tragedy called Katrina worked for Nashville’s good.

A tragedy in Tammie Shannon’s life also put her on a new path. With her mother’s death at an early age from cancer, “I knew I needed to help others become more educated about insurance, especially coverage with benefits that can be accessed while still living,” she says.

Her agency, Shannon Insurance Group, includes the client on their team, using a consultative approach to provide clarity, objectivity and the best solution for them. From devastated to dynamic, Tammie Shannon has come a long way.

Amy’s passions extend beyond the home and into the community. For the past eight years, she has donated space to Brightstone, a Franklin facility that helps adults with learning disabilities.

The profits from their sales at Harmony Home go directly back into their program. “We also support Happy Tales Humane in Franklin, where we rescued our two shop cats,” Amy explains.

“Willy and Maddie greet customers in hopes to get their backs scratched a little and have gained quite the celebrity status around town!” In Murfreesboro, Amy’s office has been turned into a cat adoption shelter, where cats and kittens from local shelters are fostered until they can be adopted out.

vision. “We opened a new store in Murfreesboro this past April and are breaking ground on a 4500 sq. ft. expansion in the Franklin shop. We remain very positive about the economy turning the corner and look forward to sunnier days,” Amy relates. “I encourage people as much as possible to support their small local businesses. It has been a tough couple of years, and we depend on your loyalty!”

While the past few years have been tough, Amy has managed to stay true to who she is as a person and as a manager. Her relaxed, good-natured style has gone a long way toward helping Harmony Home’s business stay strong, but she credits her staff as well. “I have put together an amazing team at both shops that share my characteristics and beliefs. We work cohesively as a team, and I attribute my success and ability to expand to that,” she says. She also

acknowledges her family; her “amazing” husband Chris has been by her side since day one and completely supports her endeavors, and their children help out in the summers and take care of the cats. “They are so proud of the shop, and I love how much they love it!”

Amy’s dream of creating a place to help make a house a home has come true, but not without a lot of hard work. “I believe that a business owner should always keep their hands ‘dirty,’ never becoming immune to doing the hard and heavy tasks, like hauling boxes, moving furniture and cleaning restrooms. And that hard work has certainly paid off. “It never ceases to amaze me that almost every day, at least one customer will take the time to let me know how much they love the store. It’s like getting a daily pat on the back, and I never tire of it!”

Volunteers of America provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support to a population of vulnerable people, many of whom

Overcoming the recent Nashville Flood has by far been the biggest challenge Meyer and Tanner have faced. I

n the wake of natural disaster, warfare, and human heartache, it is easy to feel despair. However, it is comforting to know there are organizations taking a stand against human suffering and offering help to those all over the world who need it most.

Wayne Elsey, the Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls, is doing just that. After being profoundly affected by the devastating tsunami that struck Southeast Asia in 2004, Wayne was overcome with the need to help in some way.

Watching television news coverage of the tsunami damage one night, Wayne saw a shoe float by on his screen, and then it hit him. Wayne rallied his executive contacts in the footwear industry and within a few months over a quarter of a million pairs of shoes were sent to tsunami victims. One year later, tragedy

hit home and Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana. Wayne was once again compelled to help, and was pleased by the overwhelming and sudden response.

Wayne was moved by how willing people were to offer help. Wayne quit his full-time job and one year later Soles4Souls was established. Currently, the team includes a core staff of over 30 people dedicated to improving the lives of those less fortunate.

n October, 2005, Camille Cowart, Kim Kmiec, Carrie Patterson and Megan Brodbine Williams took their love for cats and combined it with their years of experience working with different agencies to create Nashville Cat Rescue (NCR), a non-profit, 501(c) (3) all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of Middle Tennessee’s cats and kittens by rescuing them from the streets and high-kill shelters and then adopting them into loving new homes. “We took in an additional 100 displaced cats after the devastating Nashville flood, and at this point, we have adopted out more than 2300 cats since our inception. We should be at the 2500 mark by the end of this year,” says Megan Brodbine Williams, co-founder and member of the Board of Directors.

We have cared for and placed cats with FIV, leg and tail amputations, eye removals, blindness or deafness and many cats from cruelty situations.”

The TNCCC obtains funding through corporate diversity initiatives, event revenue and membership dues. “We want to build community outside of church, supporting one another as believers in the marketplace and helping each other to remember and understand our position of influence in the world around us. Let’s focus on building relationships and doing the right thing, not focusing on money - the money will come,” she says.

Now in its third year, TNCCC has 275 active business members with more than 200 regularly attending their monthly luncheons. “There is an obvious desire for believers in the marketplace to connect,” she adds. “Our goal is to move beyond Middle Tennessee to other parts of the state. There are 15 other Christian chambers right now, but we still don’t have headquarters or a national convention. We want to change that – to come together to build our member business by supporting and encouraging one another.

But many of us aren’t familiar with the Prison Fellowship Ministries Angel Tree Program which ensures that children of those incarcerated in State and Federal prisons will receive a Christmas gift in their parent’s name. When Bob Fritzlan, a financial consultant, began volunteering with the program, he saw that help was sorely needed and so he formed Belle Aire Ministry Partners Inc. “These children have some issues,” Fritzlan, said. “They don’t understand, especially at an early age, why dad is gone. They are privileged to create the framing for drawings made by children staying at the Nashville Ronald McDonald House, and they regularly donate framing for the memorabilia auctioned at the annual YWCA fundraiser during CMA week. At the last auction, more than $180,000 was raised from the sales of the memorabilia they gave, with one piece going for $11,000!

Pastor Dale Robble invites you to come experience a different kind of church, one that is all about Jesus and less about “churchy” traditions. At Highland Park Church in Nashville, visitors will find relevant, Biblical teaching for life’s everyday issues in a casual, friendly atmosphere.

Dale and his staff promise visitors that they will not be singled out or harassed after visiting. “That’s our ‘Anti-Stalking Guarantee!’” laughs Dale. “Since 71% of the people here were not attending any church prior to Highland Park, we understand what it’s like to visit a new church. You are never pressured to stand-up, clap nor do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.”

Highland Park also invites visitors to “come as you are. Whatever you wear is appropriate; we believe God cares more about what’s on the inside.”

“Most of our members did not go to church at all prior to coming to Highland Park,” explains Dale. “We founded this church with a goal of creating a place to minister specifically to unchurched and non-believers. We realized that there are many people searching for meaning and fulfillment in life who simply are not going to go to a traditional church for a variety of reasons.”

Highland Park has a one-hour service at 10:00am each Sunday designed for people who are investigating Christianity and those interested in learning how to apply Biblical principles to everyday life. Highland Park provides a relaxed, casual environment and an easy to understand message. Dale says, “We are all about Jesus. We will share truth with you and encourage you to discover the truth of God’s word and who He is for yourself. We won’t water it down; I believe people can handle that.”

Highland Park Church is excited to act as a major sponsor of the underresourced in the community, providing financial resources, gifts and volunteers to the Last Minute Toy Store. Dale says, “It is truly a labor of love for those involved, and it takes a lot of hands to pull off this ministry.” During the May flooding, hundreds of Highland Park Church volunteers helped with the rebuilding process, fundraising and in leading efforts to find Nashville’s only remaining missing victim of the flood, Danny Tomlinson, who was an active member of Highland Park Church.

“Ultimately, our mission is to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ. This is the foundation for everything we do and has been the basis of our ministry from the beginning,” Dale adds. “Our mantra is that God is good . . . all the time! Come join us!”
