Early September sees the start of the busiest period of our Chamber year. Between now and Christmas we have numerous events for all our members to get involved in.

Following the overwhelming success of our 2014 Chamber Means Business Exhibition we have this year taken the decision to double the size of the event and move it to a new venue. Wentworth Woodhouse provides a stunning backdrop to our 2015 event and we are delighted that we have over 60 confirmed exhibitors, who are joining us on Wednesday 16th September.

This event has provided a showcase and, coupled with the new Chamber Means Business website, provides an ‘inter-trading platform’ for all our members. I would personally like to thank all our exhibitors, in particular our event sponsors Enterprising Barnsley and RiDO. Next month sees the return of the Barnsley

and Rotherham Business Awards to the Metrodome in Barnsley, last year was a huge success and generated some very worthy winners. We are looking forward to welcoming all the shortlisted businesses to this event and, like 2014, I am sure there will be many excellent nominations.

At the time of writing we are well on the way to exceeding the amount of entries we received last year, showing that business is certainly looking good in both Barnsley and Rotherham.

Looking even further forward, towards the end of the year, we will be re-launching our membership packages with enhanced offerings and new opportunities for all members. We work tirelessly to ensure

Chamber completes growing list of Patrons Roy Hatfield Ltd have become the latest company to sign at the Chamber’s top level of membership completing the list of Chamber Patrons.

This year has shown tremendous growth for highest level of membership with seven companies signing earlier in the year, leading the Chamber to declare its Patronage offer as “full”.

This recent addition takes the total number of Patrons to 19. Commenting on the support from local businesses and the growth of Chamber membership so far in 2015, Andrew Denniff, the Chamber’s Chief Executive said, “The growing list of patron members is a reflection on the influence and engagement that the Chamber currently has. All our patrons are businesses that have been involved with the Chamber over

The company has grown under Roy’s vision and latterly that of his son’s to become to a very well respected ISO 9001 approved company, operating from a 6 acre licensed processing facility in Rotherham.

The company recycles industrial waste and

bi-products from the steel industry via a number of unique processes developed inhouse. Bulk commodity supply into heavy industry is an expanding area of the business and the “HATCRETE” brand manufactures a range of quality assured industrial and decorative concrete products from the same site.

Last year the company were awarded The Queen’s awards for Enterprise in Innovation in recognition of the Gypsum recycling programme, as well as receiving accolades at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards for Business Growth and the top prize of Business of the Year.

Barnsley and Rotherham Business Success Members from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber triumphed at the annual Sheffield City Region Awards, which sees winners from the regions award ceremonies go head to head for the top prices.

Winners from the four Chambers of Commerce and the Derbyshire Times Business Awards went against one another in 13 categories and six Barnsley & Rotherham members took home the top prizes.

The Design and Innovation award was presented to Osborne Technologies Ltd for the development of a highly innovative range

Charlotte Scothern, owner of Patchwork Pig, a gift shop on Rotherham’s High Street became the first retail winner at the 2014 Barnsley and Rotherham Awards and took the prize for Retail, Leisure and Tourism.

Commenting on her win, Charlotte said, “It is an amazing honour to have won the City Region Award, for us, as a relatively new business to have been in the same category as other wonderful businesses from all across the City Region is a great feeling but to win is unbelievable.

Five of the winners came from the 2014 Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards and Chamber Patron, Westfield Health won both the award for Customer Services and the Overall top prize on the night.

Barnsley College, winner of the Business Community Impact Award in 2014 won the prize for Corporate Social Responsibility on behalf of the One Barnsley Apprenticeship Pledge. The apprenticeship scheme was recognised for its high success rates in the town. Companies pledge to work towards employing 2.5% of their workforce in Apprenticeship positions and the response rates have seen more than 600 apprentices now employed by 150 companies.

Businesses back search for top talent

Enterprising Barnsley, the business support division of Barnsley Council, have strengthened their commitment to local businesses by joining the search to find the region’s top businesses and individuals.

The enterprising team at Barnsley Council have a long history of supporting local businesses in Barnsley and have become this year’s Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards top sponsor, as well as sponsoring the Most Promising New Business Award.

Combined Authority and Devolution in the City Region A Combined Authority was established in April 2014, with the sole remit of encouraging economic growth throughout the Sheffield City Region (SCR) by investing in Skills, Transport, Housing, Infrastructure and Business Growth.

The group consists of nine local authorities’ areas covering Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire and the four South Yorkshire districts. The Combined Authority is run by the leaders and chief executives of the nine constituent Councils supported by the Local Enterprise Partnership’s Executive Team and is an opportunity for decisions to increase productivity, create jobs and engender economic growth to be made locally.

The Government announced recently that the SCR Combined Authority is currently negotiating the terms of

potential devolution deal which would see funds devolved from Government departments’ to the region around skills, transport and business support. It is important that businesses in the region are able to influence and take advantage of the autonomy that the region would be afforded through a devolution deal and that the voice of business should be at the heart of all decisions that affect the future of our local economy.

Through the devolution agenda, which is gaining momentum, it is suggested that Sheffield City Region would have to agree to have an elected ‘Metro Mayor’ in order

to unlock funds from central government.

The Manchester Combined Authority have already agreed their devolution deal with Whitehall and it includes them agreeing to have an elected mayor. Again, businesses may want to debate the advantages and disadvantages of having an elected mayor for the Sheffield City Region. However, one thing is for certain, businesses will not support another elected official unless they have real power, authority and an understanding of the role of the private sector in shaping the region’s future economy.

At Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce we are keen to ensure that we are able to help shape and influence the devolution agenda as much as possible.

We represent the region’s Chambers on the Business Growth Board of the Local Enterprise Partnership, which it is hoped will inform how business support is delivered in the future through what is dubbed the ‘Growth Hub’, a central one-stop-shop for businesses support in the region.

As the devolution debate grows even stronger, the Chambers in the region will give businesses a voice when key decisions on the future of our local economy are being made.

Bluetree lays down new roots in Rotherham Fast-growing print experts, Bluetree Design & Print Ltd, has completed its move to bigger Rotherham premises and is taking on new staff.

Rolls-Royce and Unipart to create joint venture in Rotherham Rolls-Royce, one of the most famous names in engineering throughout the world, is creating a joint venture on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham with Unipart Group, a leading provider of manufacturing, logistics and consultancy services.

Based on proven and patented Rolls-Royce technology, MetLase will provide innovative engineering solutions to applications where precision and speed of deployment are increasingly critical.

Initially focused on aerospace, automotive, motorsport and the medical market sector, the new company will initially create around 30 high-end, technical engineering jobs at its new headquarters on the AMP.

£52m fund to attract and grow businesses A £52m pot secured by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is set to be split into two funds - one to help grow existing businesses, and one to help secure inward investment.

Half of the fund would be used in a similar way to the existing LEP programme, used to “unlock” direct business investment, principally within SMEs. Previous business investments include capital projects which involve investment in equipment, machinery and tools, or alterations to land and/or premises to meet the needs of the business. Grants have also

been used to support new research and development.

Rotherham firms securing funding for capital projects include KP Snacks, Martek Marine, Roy Hatfield Ltd and SVM Europe Ltd. The other half of the fund is to be used to support significant inward investment.

Established in 1989, the Templeborough firm has evolved from a traditional screen printer to a predominantly digital offering. It took space at the Ignite @ Magna development in 2007 and in 2012 the business merged with instantprint.co.uk to provide a multichannel offering.

Funding from Barclays and the Sheffield City Region Growth Fund Programme has enabled Bluetree to move to a new 86,900 sq ft site at Brookfields Park that will allow the business to offer a wider range of products and services.

Expanding into new headquarters and merging two existing factories under one roof also provides improved efficiency and enables future growth by doubling production capacity.

The number of employees has risen from 41 to 170, with further plans to increase this figure to 200.

Homes and businesses can benefit as the first fibre broadband street cabinet ‘goes live’ five months early Fall Bank Industrial Estate at Dodworth in Barnsley is the first location in the Barnsley borough to benefit from the multi-million pound Superfast South Yorkshire programme as high-speed fibre broadband arrived five months ahead of schedule.

A further three cabinets will be switched on in Grimethorpe, Oakwell and Stairfoot bringing the new technology in reach of a further 400 homes and businesses during the first phase of the Superfast South Yorkshire programme which will complete in December this year. In total more than 16,000 homes and businesses in the Barnsley area are set to benefit by the end of the 2017.

Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, said: “I’m delighted that the Superfast South Yorkshire programme is off to such a great start, with the first cabinets going live five months ahead of schedule. Our nationwide rollout of superfast broadband is now reaching another 40,000 homes and businesses every week, and we are on track to reach 95 per cent of the UK by 2017.”

In September last year South Yorkshire joined forces with BT in a £22 million pound deal to extend the availability of high-speed, fibre broadband to around 98 per cent of homes and businesses in the city region. The project will build upon BT’s commercial roll-out which is already making fibre broadband available more than 451,000 homes and businesses across South Yorkshire.

The majority of South Yorkshire premises will be getting access to some of the best broadband speeds boosting the competitiveness of local firms and offering new ways of flexible working, entertainment and learning opportunities for local residents.

Fibre broadband enables multiple users in a home or business to access the internet, more quickly than ever before. The benefits of faster broadband speeds for businesses are considerable and include faster file and data transfers, better access to cloud computing services and software, more sophisticated web-based contact with customers and support for more flexible working.

Sheffield Hallam University Appoints New Vice-Chancellor Sheffield Hallam University confirmed the appointment of Professor Chris Husbands as its new Vice-Chancellor from January 2016.

Professor Husbands is currently Vice Provost (Academic Development and London) and Director of the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL). He will take up the appointment in January 2016 when the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Jones retires.

Professor Husbands has been at the Institute of Education for eight years, where he has overall responsibility for academic careers, reward and development, equality and diversity across UCL. Geoff Dawson, Chair of the Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam said: “I am pleased to announce this appointment on behalf of the University Board. Professor Husbands’ appointment comes at an exciting time for our University as we look to the future. His excellent experience of academic and institutional leadership will help us shape a strong future for Sheffield Hallam and all of those who benefit from our work.

“I would also like to offer my continued gratitude and support to our current ViceChancellor, Professor Philip Jones, who will very much continue to lead us with his well-known drive and enthusiasm until the end of the year. His vision and dedication over the past eight years have delivered strong institutional performances in research, teaching, student recruitment and satisfaction - achievements we can be rightly proud of.”

After completing his first degree in history and doctorate in geography at the University of Cambridge, Professor Husbands qualified as a teacher in London, before spending six years teaching in Norwich and Hertfordshire.

He has previously been Director of the Institute of Education at the University of Warwick; Professor of Research in Education and Dean of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of East Anglia; and Director of the National Evaluation

Business Crime Plan for South Yorkshire This Business Crime Strategic Plan details the response of South Yorkshire Police to business crime within the county. It defines a clear strategy detailing the aims and objectives of the policing approach as well as providing the various plans to support this work.

The document provides background information relating to business crime in South Yorkshire as well as the structure and delivery plan for achieving the core strategy in support of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s and Chief Constable’s aims for the force.

The plan takes into account the local and wider national landscape around business crime and will review potential future trends and developments that may impact upon business crime and the economy in South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire Police recognise that businesses are a vital part of our local communities and are essential to economic growth. The Business Crime Strategy, the first of its kind for South Yorkshire Police, aims to provide a commitment to working with businesses in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, to improve confidence and satisfaction, to prevent crime, the fear of crime and reduce the economic impact.

Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth said:

“Businesses are a vital part of our communities and are essential to economic growth. We recognise this and have put together a Business Crime Strategy which we hope will improve confidence and satisfaction by reducing crime, reducing the fear of crime and reducing the economic impact.

“We are developing more effective ways of accepting reports of crime and improving the way we share our information. Our team of business crime advisors are key to our strategy and are available to visit organisations to carry out free security assessments. In addition, businesses in Rotherham can access an on-line portal which will allows them to report crime and we hope this will follow suit in Barnsley.

We also have a dedicated webpage which features crime prevention advice and are hoping to issue regular updates via Twitter and Facebook. All these actions are our way of improving our partnerships and showing our commitment to the business community.”

Barnsley MPs Breakfast Forum The Chamber’s annual Barnsley MPs Breakfast Forum, in association with MKB Solicitors LLP, was a huge success again this year attracting over 40 business people from across the region.

Members of Parliament John Healey, Dan Jarvis and Angela Smith joined the business audience to discuss the pressing business and economic related issues of the day. Understandably there was a general consensus that it is important that South Yorkshire and the business community’s interests in the region are not forgotten in Whitehall, amongst both civil servants and Ministers.

With growing interest in the possible devolution deal for the Sheffield City Region, it is crucial that the voice of business is heard throughout any current or future negotiations with Government.

All three MPs committed to supporting the region’s businesses in ensuring that any future deals that affect the long-term

future of the local economy are made in partnership with the private sector. No one stakeholder should be left out and every stakeholder should have a role.

Further to the devolution and regional

economic development issues, there was considerable interest in meeting the future skills requirements for the region, particularly how further education providers can work more in partnership given the Government’s proposal to reduce the number of providers.

Trans-Pennine Tunnel Feasibility Study Tunnel vision is a concept usually frowned upon, but below Tony Hickton explains why businessmen in South Yorkshire should embrace it on this occasion.

He believes a golden opportunity beckons for those willing to grasp the concept of making - as well as saving - money from a tunnel that could appear from beneath the Pennine foothills.

The government’s National infrastructure plan estimates that schemes costing £466 billion, will be required over the next decade.

So now the need for more giant projects has been broadly accepted.

“A feasibility study is already underway to examine the opportunities presented by a new road and rail tunnel passing under the Peak District and providing connectivity with the three major cities of Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds which is long overdue owing to the current routes being closed for 35 days every year, on average once every eleven days!

Also, 26 miles of giant tunnelling under London and beyond for Crossrail has just been completed so now the highly trained workforce are about to move on to the Thames Tideway Tunnel super sewer which will cost approximately £4 billion, then where?

It’s no wonder South Yorkshire businesses tend to look North, South and East first when seeking job opportunities and personnel.

The trans-Pennine tunnel is a far simpler solution than Crossrail II, so to keep the skills base intact whilst Crossrail II is ready, emphasis could easily shift from London to this Northern Powerhouse project, if

demand is high enough for what is only 12 miles for the longest stretch!”

Tony, a long-standing member of the Chamber’s Transport working group, believes it is highly likely that the connectivity benefits of a trans-Pennine tunnel solution would contribute an extra £3 in GDP per year for every £1 of construction costs and that local businesses who are prepared to embrace the concept could be in line for a long overdue windfall effect on the economy of the area and open up access to the £40 billion reportedly pledged to North West Coast projects.

Energy saving solutions for business Chamber Patron, ASD Lighting, offer an insight into the use of energy saving lighting and LED’s for businesses.

Businesses today face increasing pressures to promote and display energy efficiency, and to have strategies in place to ensure their carbon footprint is at a reasonable level, showing CO2 reductions over the long-term.

According to The Carbon Trust, ‘commercial and industrial buildings lighting typically accounts for 20 percent of the electricity used’. In these times of high energy prices and requirements to show-off one’s ‘green credentials’, it’s little wonder that finding cost effective ways to do this leads businesses to look at their lighting requirements.

Advances in LED lighting technology means that it can be used to provide lighting for a range of purposes, from office lighting to amenity, display lighting, or for lighting large interior or exterior areas.

Replacement of halogen lighting by LED has the potential to reduce electricity consumption by between 65 and 86 percent, replacing fluorescent lighting with LED can deliver energy savings of around 20 percent. Couple LED technology with an efficient control systems, which can

automatically dim or switch off lighting during periods of low activity, the savings made can be even greater.

An often overlooked benefit of an LED lighting installation over older technology is the reduced burden on maintenance expenses. The requirement to periodically purchase replacement lamps, along with the labour cost of the maintenance team, is vastly reduced.

All LED lighting however, is not created equal. When making a choice on lighting for your business it’s important to consider not just the quality of the LED inside the fitting, but the body, the driver, any diffusing material, controls and sensors, and importantly the scheme design, for choosing your product before having a quality lighting scheme is like putting the horse before the cart.

For over thirty years ASD Lighting have designed, developed and manufactured high quality lighting from our factory in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. We recently invested in a goniophotometer and integrated sphere, two complex pieces of high-end technology that allow us to carry out photometric tests on our luminaires.

The data obtained from these tests can then be used in lighting scheme design software, giving us the ability to check illuminance levels and produce 3D computer generated visualisations of lighting schemes. Furniture and colour schemes can also be incorporated into the design to produce ‘photo like’ images of the finished environment. Virtually any type of design can be produced for interior and exterior areas.

• M ODERN Modern luminaires are much more likely to have passed recent safety and performance testing. Modern luminaires are more likely to have accurate photometric data, enabling them to be used in lighting scheme design software.

Waste and the Environment Do you ever think about what happens to your waste once it has left your site and do you consider the environmental impacts? something think about its useful lifetime versus purchase price and the cost to the environment. Could you buy something that can be refurbished or recycled rather than disposed of? Could a different product do the same job but be easier and cheaper to recycle or dispose of?

The waste hierarchy describes the steps for dealing with waste according to environmental impact. The steps are waste minimisation, re-use, recycling, recovery and disposal (landfill or incineration).

Waste can contaminate the atmosphere, watercourses and soil if not disposed of correctly. Plants and animals can be harmed by contaminated water and soil which in turn can affect us via the food chain.

Waste legislation changed on 1st June this year. WM3 is now the guidance document to use to classify your waste. Some wastes that were previously classed as hazardous may now be non-hazardous and vice versa.

There is a clear definition of the terms discard, waste and by-products.

The legal definition is not the same as in everyday language. Common pitfalls with waste management are when waste is given away to other businesses or organisations.

Examples I see often are; waste pallets, usable wood offcuts, scrap metal and empty drums, to name just a few.

There are exemptions and environmental

permits which apply to many of these activities, these have to be applied for and have specific conditions. These are often referred to as ‘licences’. You must check the company or organisation you are giving your waste to have the relevant exemption or permit before you hand over any waste.

Your waste is still your responsibility until it is handed over to a legally compliant waste company. Before any waste moves you must have done all appropriate duty of care checks on their licence and keep a copy as proof.

Failure to do this can attract fines of £5,000 and possible prosecution, ignorance is no defence - be aware of waste crime.

BMW renews membership in Go Ultra Low emission vehicle campaign BMW has reaffirmed its commitment to Go Ultra Low, the campaign to increase awareness of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) among British car buyers.

BMW is joined by other manufacturers in working with government to raise awareness of the benefits of ULEVs – including low running costs and government incentives.

Between them, the seven Go Ultra Low members boast 15 ULEVs across a wide variety of model sizes and performance attributes, from family cars and vans, to SUVs and high performance sports cars.

According to figures from the SMMT (the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), ULEV registrations in 2014 grew by more than 300% to 14,518 cars, as drivers embraced the variety of models on offer; the enjoyable driving experience; and cheaper driving costs associated with ULEV ownership. BMW’s firstever electric vehicle, the BMW i3, launched to critical acclaim in Nov 2013 and was voted UK Car of the Year. To date, BMW has sold 1,859 i3s in the UK. Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: “The public are increasingly seeing the benefits of ultra low emission vehicles, which have low running costs and are easily chargeable at home or on the street. We now have seven manufacturers campaigning to show the wide

range of styles and prices available so even more people will see what’s on offer, and the significant government help available.”

Hetal Shah, spokesperson for Go Ultra Low, said: “More UK car-buyers are realising the advantages of owning an ultra-low emission vehicle, and the aim of the newly-expanded Go Ultra Low consortium is to share the multiple benefits with a wider audience. We’ve discovered that once people learn more about the benefits of these cars and vans, they’re keen to take action – and once they’ve tried them, they’re hooked.”

With pure-electric vehicles able to travel around 100 miles on a single charge and other plug-in ULEVs boasting ranges of up to 700 miles, these efficient cars are a viable, lowcost option for millions of motorists across the country.

As well as tax benefits, government currently offers up to £5,000 of the price of ULEVs and the cost of driving them is as little as 2p per mile, compared to at least 10p per mile for a typical petrol or diesel car.

Manufacturers team up to add sparkle A South Yorkshire laser cutting specialist has teamed up with decorative lighting experts Northern Lights to create a dazzling feature in one of the country’s busiest shopping malls.

Cutting Technologies based in Barnsley, laser cut 6,400 delicate shapes which are now captivating shoppers in a stunning display in Meadowhall’s Upper Mall.

The concept was designed by Wakefield-based interior designers The Harris Partnership, who approached Chesterfield-based Northern Lights to bring their idea to life.

“It’s great to have such a stunning showcase for the combined skills of the two companies right on our doorsteps, and good for staff at both firms to be able to show off their talents locally.”

Paul Wade, Managing Director at Northern Lights, added: “We’ve worked with Cutting Technologies on a range of projects now, some as far afield as Dubai. But it’s been

good to work on a project a little closer to home this time.

“Cutting Technologies always offers us a first rate service and understand the challenges of the design process. It makes our lives much easier to work with laser cutting specialists who combine engineering expertise with a good grasp of design and aesthetics.”

The Cutting Technologies team was then given the job of laser cutting the thousands of abstract shapes from clear Perspex™ and shiny stainless steel, which twinkle as they catch the light and give the impression of falling leaves cascading from the centre’s iconic glass roof.

Jane Robinson, co-founder and director at Cutting Technologies, said: “It’s always a pleasure to work on Northern Lights’ fantastic projects, and the delicate nature of this one’s design is perfect for laser cutting. Our recent investment in state of the art technology, including two Fiber lasers, makes jobs like these easier than ever.

Berneslai Homes Apprentices come up on top at National Housing Awards Berneslai Homes’ Apprentice Gas Plumber Rachel Shorter is celebrating after winning Apprentice of the Year at the National Federation of ALMOs (NFA) 2015 Awards.

Rachel entered her apprenticeship in her late twenties and had achieved an environmental qualification and employment in an office based role but wanted a career change.

She showed great commitment in taking the 4 year apprenticeship and has acted as a fantastic role model for females. She has positively described her experiences to people and spoken to pupils at schools across Barnsley, reinforcing what women can achieve in a male dominated trade.

Rachel adds: “As an apprentice I’ve had the opportunity to work with various teams

and staff which has proved invaluable. It’s a great way to learn a variety of techniques and develop your own personal methods and learn your trade. I love my job working in people’s homes which is both satisfying and enjoyable with no day the same and I am delighted to win this award which is the icing on the cake.”

Berneslai Homes’ former Apprentice Operations Manager Dan Crossley was also named as a finalist for the award which was sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Housing and judged by an independent panel.

Rotherham printing specialists secure national contract Print specialist Gala Graphics has reached its first milestone after securing a major contract with international business giants, Virgin Media.

Incorporated in early 2014, Gala Graphics is a subsidiary of the UK’s largest marquee and gazebo distributor Gala Tent, after being contacted by Map UK, one of Virgin Media’s contractors, Gala Graphics secured a 94 van branding contract.

Formed when Gala Tent’s in-house printing department expanded to become a fully autonomous business in its own right, Gala Graphics has continued to grow and hopes that the Virgin Media contract will be the first of many large contracts.

Gala Graphics’ director, Tom Madden,

said: “Being able to secure large contracts with national giants such as Virgin Media is excellent for us. The key to securing contracts like this was our diversification.

“Initially the business offered vinyl and dye sublimation printing on marquees and gazebos, but as the business grew we were able to specialise in printing an extensive range of products from signage to leaflets.”

Due to the company’s exceptional growth over the past 12 months, Gala Tent’s managing director, Jason Mace is planning an expansion: “We’ve previously expanded

our existing premises in order to house Gala Graphics, this contract has meant growth exceeded all expectation and so we’re currently looking to move into larger premises, near our existing site in Rotherham.

“Gala Graphics has quadrupled in size over the past 12 months and goes to show the decision to launch Gala Tent’s printing department as an independent business in order to provide a higher level of quality than our competitors at a lower price was the right decision.”

New scheme launched to help businesses support their local communities A new patronage scheme has been launched by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF) to enable local businesses to support their communities.

The Community Foundation is a local charity founded in 1986 to raise funding to support local charitable organisations working to better their local communities. In that time over 24 million has been raised and distributed by SYCF to create a better South Yorkshire.

Now the SY100 scheme has been launched to provide a simple and effective way for local businesses and individuals to make a positive difference on their own doorstep and to help continue the foundation’s essential work.

Julie A Kenny, Chair and CEO of the Rotherham based Electronic Security Manufacturer Pyronix, and SYCF trustee has signed on as the founding SY100 member and

ambassador to the scheme.

She said: “Deep inequalities are present across South Yorkshire between different communities and people. If we aspire to make a positive change and narrow the gap between successful individuals and companies and seriously deprived communities, we must work together. Theme park partnership Barnsley based concept designer and animatronic and special effect manufacturer Themsparx has created new scenes and characters for the Tractor Ride at Sundown Adventureland.

Working with the park owners, Mrs Rhodes and her daughter Gaynor Corr, Themesparx created the initial concept designs for the refurbishment of the ride and then manufactured the final products at their factory in Dodworth, Barnsley.

The relationship between Themsparx and Sundown Adventureland first began when they were asked to create the animatronic Captain Sandy.

There has been great interest in the characters particularly for the theming of

adventure golf courses. The characters are made from GRP and polyurethane and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor sites.

In the past 18 months Themesparx has designed and installed theming, animatronics and special effects at Alton Towers; In the Night Garden, Chessington World of Adventure; Scorpion Express and Kongeparken Theme Park, Norway; Little Fergie Tractor Ride which won a THEA Award in November 2014.

Safetynett (UK) - Spreading the word about changes to Construction Design Management Regulations Safetynett (UK) consultants have been busy in the last few months following the introduction of the new CDM 2015 Regulations.

They have held a number of training and CPD events around the country to provide architects and construction companies with information regarding the changes and what they mean for duty holders within the industry.
