Closer to home we must involve ourselves in influencing and supporting the growth agenda of the Local Enterprise Partnership. It is essential that the Sheffield City Region’s team work closely and constructively with our business community as it can only be the private sector that creates economic growth and sustainable employment. Some of those successful businesses will be recognised at our Business Awards in October and we are already in full swing in preparation for the event. One person who has consistently shown what it takes to not only make a real success of their business but also take time to put something back into her local community is our former president, Julie Kenny. Patrons lunch at ‘hidden gem’ Wentworth Woodhouse Over 40 guests dined in the Long Gallery at the extraordinary Wentworth Woodhouse for the Chamber’s exclusive lunch. The lunch brought together 18 of the Chamber’s highest level members, also joined by the Chamber’s President, Chief Executive and Directors. Guests enjoyed a two course lunch, whilst hearing the latest updates of the £150 million masterplan for Wentworth Woodhouse direct from Chief Executive Sarah McLeod, followed by a behind the scenes tour of the house.

Lisa Pogson, President of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber said: “We had such a lovely afternoon at the hidden gem Wentworth Woodhouse, the weather was lovely, the food was amazing and it was nice to spend time networking with our Patron members. “The tour of the house was the perfect ending to a wonderful day and I look forward to our next lunch.”

Chamber seeks nominations for Representative Council The Chamber are seeking members to put forward nominations for positions on the Representative Council. Any member company can nominate a candidate to stand for election and all candidates must be part of a fully paid up member organisation Chamber Council is an elected representative body from our members and meet 6 times per year. There is also sectoral, policy and commercial working groups and we encourage active participation.

Elected members serve on Council for a period of up to 3 years and are eligible for re-election after their term of office.

Former Chamber President receives Top Honour from the Queen Julie Kenny, a former two-term president with the Chamber of Commerce in Rotherham, becomes a Dame Commander of the British Empire, the second-highest honour in the land, for her crucial role in securing the future of Grade I listed Wentworth Woodhouse. As the chair of Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, Julie is its bestknown unpaid volunteer. “I am amazed and humbled to receive this honour,” she said. “I was inspired by one of the greatest houses in the country and I did not achieve this alone; there were many people that helped me along the way and this award recognises our joint achievements.” She described rescuing the house from decline as one of the most inspiring, yet hardest, challenges of her life. Julie set up Rotherham security system manufacturer Pyronix in 1986 and grew the business into an award-winning organisation supplying 65 countries and was awarded her CBE in 2002 for services to industry in Yorkshire and Humberside. When she sold the company in 2016 its turnover was £25 million. She has also acted as a governmentappointed commissioner to Rotherham Council and was the first female chair of the British Security Industry Association. In addition she has served on numerous government bodies, is a Deputy Lieutenant, former High Sheriff of South Yorkshire and

has won numerous awards, including Vitalise Businesswoman of the Year and PwC Private Businesswoman of the Year. Current Chamber President Lisa Pogson commented, “Julie has been an amazing role model in the business community and in her public facing roles, many of which she has done on a voluntary basis.

“I have personal experience of her generosity of time and spirit, mentoring and support. She absolutely deserves this and for me it is for more than working with Wentworth Woodhouse, it is recognition of giving her time freely to business and the community. “Truly one of our own done good. In fact, just brilliant.”

HRH The Duke of York opens new University Centre Rotherham RNN Group’s new £10.5 million University Centre (UCR) received a royal welcome as HRH The Duke of York KG, officially opened the higher education centre on Doncaster Gate. The specialist centre for degree and higher-level qualifications right in the heart of Rotherham is helping to reduce the skills gap locally and support the economy as part of the Rotherham Plan 2025. During the visit, The Duke was welcomed to the new campus by CEO and Principal of the RNN Group, Jason Austin, along with the Vice Chair of the Corporation, Stephen Smith, several members of the Group’s Senior Leadership Team and Governors. Education is one of His Royal Highness’s core areas of focus, with The Duke committed to supporting a wide range of pathways to ensure young people develop the skills they need to become economically active. Mr Austin invited His Royal Highness on a tour of the impressive building introducing staff and students studying within the centre, along with local employers and a range of alumni who have studied higher education courses within Rotherham College, also part of the RNN Group. The main areas of focus during the visit were Performing Arts where degree students showcased a short performance from Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Media and Photography where key features of the studio were described as enhancing the educational experience and employability skills. Others included Computing and Digital and Health and Social Care where The Duke had the opportunity to see how students work closely with local employers on live projects to ensure

skills and experiences gained at UCR are relevant for the workplace. Students also demonstrated how the state-ofthe-art facilities within the UCR are dedicated to providing all learners the opportunity to study their degrees locally without compromising on quality.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by His Royal Highness, marking the opening of University Centre Rotherham as a key local Higher Education provider. CEO and Principal of RNN Group, Jason Austin, said: “With the official opening of our brand new University

Centre Rotherham, we are proud to be extending our continued commitment to excellent education and training provision so that local people can now study degrees in the heart of Rotherham. “We recognise this as an exciting step toward reducing the local skills gap and supporting the regional economy. New addition at Russell Richardson! Thriving Sheffield confidential waste, shredding and recycling experts Russell Richardson have hired a new operations and depot manager. Marcus Burley now oversees the running of the Tinsley company’s nationwide collection convoy, 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse and ensures the shredder keeps running efficiently, destroying up to seven tonnes of material an hour. The 42-year-old from Intake, Sheffield, was previously a production manager at Prospec Ltd based in Rotherham. There he ran a team which included warehouse staff, fabricators and drivers. Marcus’ role was to ensure that all the material was fabricated correctly, parts were picked accurately, and ensuring that all material was delivered on time.

“Lyndsay Stewart is the reason for my arrival at Russell Richardson. In the 16 years of knowing Lyndsay she has always spoken highly of the company and Jonathan Richardson. These past few weeks have proven Lyndsay was right.” Russell Richardson has relocated all operations to the Tinsley facility. The relocation has allowed the company to combine the shredding, archiving and recycling divisions of the company within the high security site.

Search begins for new Women in Business Chair An influential group which has campaigned to champion gender equality in the workplace, as well as showcasing and celebrating the important contribution women provide in successful enterprises is on the search for a new chair. The Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber Women in Business working group is the only group of its kind currently operating within South Yorkshire, and was created to help enterprising women come together to help others unlock their potential, whilst championing gender diversity within the Sheffield City Region. For the past seven years, enthusiastic, energetic and enterprising group has been chaired by Jackie Freeborn. During a period which has seen both Barnsley and Rotherham Councils appoint their first female Chief Executive, both towns elect female members of parliament, as well as the Chamber appointing its first female president since the merger of Barnsley and Rotherham Chambers in 2009, Jackie feels the time is right to review and refresh Women in Business. As well as looking to recruit a new chair, the group is also looking for new members to join its steering group which organises a range of regular networking events, whilst offering a platform to support and collaborate with other like-minded individuals. Jackie Freeborn, Chair, Women in Business said: “It has been a genuine privilege to have acted as Chair of Women in Business for the past seven years. We’ve achieved a lot during that time, but there’s so much more to do. Our vision has always been to inspire, encourage and support women to achieve their full potential.

“My time in the chair has been an amazing journey which has been shaped and influenced by some truly amazing women, whom I have learned from, been inspired by, who have supported and encouraged me. However, now is the right time for me to step down, enabling the group to review its purpose, set new objectives and continue to support and celebrate diversity within the local business community. “We’ve come a long way over the past seven years, and I would urge anyone who is interested in gender issues in the workplace, female or male, to come forward and get involved in shaping

Templeborough Biomass Power Plant inaugurated by HRH The Duke of York Last month, the Templeborough Biomass Power Plant was officially inaugurated by His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG. The power plant first generated electricity to the national grid at the end of last summer, exporting just over 41MW of green electricity which is enough to supply 78,000 homes (around half the population of Rotherham) and save over 150,000 tons of CO2 every year. The plant generates clean, green energy using waste wood as a fuel and so is great for the environment Templeborough Biomass Power Plant is located in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and will export over 41MW of clean, green energy using waste wood as a fuel and so is great for the environment. Templeborough Biomass Power Plant Ltd. was established to develop, construct and maintain the biomass power plant, which is managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a Danish fund management company specialised in offering tailormade investments in contracted longterm energy infrastructure assets The power plant was built by a

consortium of Birmingham based Interserve Construction Ltd. and Babcock & Wilcox Vølund from Denmark. Vølund has a history in power generation dating back to 1898. CIP has through its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure II (CI II) invested £160m in building the Templeborough plant. Senior Partner of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, said: “We are very proud to formally inaugurate our plant and to have His Royal Highness The Duke of York visit to make the day extra special. We were delighted to be able to discuss with him the benefits of renewable energy in the fight against climate change.” Managing Director of CI Biomass, Tim Forrest said: It has been a pleasure to celebrate the day with the project partners and reflect on the great work that has brought us to this point. We are now looking forward to many successful years of working with the local community here in Rotherham

The prestigious Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards ceremony, sponsored by AAG IT Services, returns to Magna this October. Taking place on Friday 18th October, the awards ceremony will be hosted by actor Dean Andrews. Dean is well-known for his lead role in feature film “The Navigators”, hit BBC show “ Life on Mars” and spin off “Ashes to Ashes”, drama “Last Tango in Halifax” and he has most recently taken to the screens as a new character in ITV’s award-winning Emmerdale, a character which will soon have all ‘soap’ fans talking.

Celebrating the achievements of all businesses with an “S” postcode, the Business Awards is one of the highlights of the annual business calendar. In 2018, the event saw more than 500 representatives of the local business community come together to support the event. This year, the ceremony will honour businesses, charities and individuals that apply for the 14 awards up for grabs, including the highly converted

Business of the Year Award. The Charity of the Year, will be awarded with a £3,000 donation for their chosen project and supported for the forthcoming year. Three of the new appointments have been in the Development area of the business, with Jake Barron joining the team as a Senior Developer, Jared Prest joined the team the day after graduating from his degree, and Daniel Carter as .Net Developer on his gap year from Sheffield Hallam University.

Soapbox Derby smashes Bluebell Wood’s fundraising target Bluebell Wood’s Soapbox Derby turned Clifton Park into the wackiest race ever, raising over £12,000 for charity. Thousands turned out to cheer on the 36 speed demons hell-bent on glory in the hospice’s much-loved annual fundraiser, which looks to have raised over £12,000. There were thrills – and the occasional spills – as some of the craziest costumes and handmade karts the event has ever seen zoomed over the course’s bumps, jumps and chicanes. Team Axles of Awesome stormed into first place. Driver Rick Lamb, of Sheffield, and his pit crew – Andy Dean and Peter Temple - lifted the trophy for hitting the fastest lap time – a superspeedy 43 seconds. Said Pete: “We’re just a group of mates who decided to enter because my wife Laura is a paediatrician and often works in neo-natal and intensive care units. We understood what valuable support Bluebell Wood gives to families. We built the car in Andy’s garage, after watching lots of YouTube videos!” Dearne’s Demons, a team formed by Wath company Dearne Electrical, got the fasted recorded speed on the speed gun and took second place with a time of 45 seconds. Kart teams Liberty Steel, The Batmobile crew from Wakefield and Ardagh Bottlers, an intrepid team from Ardagh Glass, who have sites in Barnsley and Doncaster, all tied for third place with a solid time of 46 seconds. Eye-catching designs were cheered

on by the crowd included fire trucks, an Amazon parcel on wheels and even a furry dog kart. Gary Holden, of Dearne’s Demon’s commented: “We had a fantastic day. All the teams helped each other with spares and repairs, the crowds were generous and enthusiastic, and we personally raised £600 on the day with a raffle and competitions. “Coming second and having the fastest recorded speed felt brilliant, but the real winners on the day were everyone who connected with Bluebell Wood. George Sykes, of Liberty Steel, which also won the award for Most Creative Kart, said: “Coming third was bittersweet. We were sure we were in with a shot of winning, but unfortunately the last obstacle got the better of us!” Helen Mower, Head of Fundraising at Bluebell Wood, said: “Our Soapbox Derby goes from strength to strength, with even bigger crowds turning out to support some of the most creative hand-made karts we have ever seen. It looks like we have smashed last year’s fundraising total of £10,000. “We’d like to thank our sponsors, Crystal Peaks and Incentive FM Group, Prestige Financial Solutions and Greencore, and Clifton Park for hosting our spectacular Soapbox Derby for a third year. Every penny raised will help to make a big difference to families facing the toughest of times across the region.”

Hydra Creative - Our New Space It’s a time of progression for full-service digital agency, Hydra Creative. After months of planning, anticipation, renovating, and decorating, the national award-winning business has officially moved and settled into their new Sheffield offices. The agency had been at their previous office in Nether Edge for five years, and due to expansion, were in need of a larger space to accommodate an increasing workload and subsequently, growing team.

The new premises, which has previously been a petrol station, printers and a granite worktop showroom, has a whole host of exciting features spread across two floors, such as an AstroTurf meeting room, a recording room for the video department, a games room for downtime, and soundproof booths where individual staff members can completely focus without distractions.

The office is now based on Chesterfield Road in Woodseats, on the same site as Bramdale Fireplaces. This is an exciting time for Hydra, as they celebrate their 10th year of business, and having grown to a team of 17 experts across four core departments: Web Development, Graphic Design, Digital Marketing and Video.

Teenager set to turnover £150,000 this year Rose Dyson, now 19, ditched university to pursue her award-winning beauty product business Pura Cosmetics. Rose started her business whilst studying for her GCSE’s at the age of 15, the idea came from Barnsley’s enterprise challenge ‘I Know I Can’, where she was given a £25 investment to design, create and sell a product, which she went on to win.

the youngest ever recipient of awards from business giants like Theo Paphitis and Jacqueline Gold CBE. She was even scouted by the BBC for the hit TV show Dragons’ Den when she was 17, only to be sadly rejected for being a year too young.

She conceptualised her cosmetics range based on her love of quality, ethical beauty products and her frustration when her pocket money as a teen could never stretch to their oftenextortionate prices.

Rose now has her sights firmly set on the future of Pura Cosmetics, and its looking to be a prosperous one!

Four years on, Rose has secured her own premises where local Barnsley and South Yorkshire customers can click and collect a range of 12 lip balms and 10 lip scrubs, with products also available to buy online and at 30 independent retailers, selling over 20,000 individual products last year and turning over £50,000.

A Woman in a Man’s World: Helen Gray Being a woman in a man’s world is challenging. Working as an engineer makes life even more interesting. “At 31, with a two-year-old child, I took my first role at Forgemasters Steel & Engineering as a QA Technician, immediately after gaining a FirstClass Honours degree in Materials Engineering. Within 6 months, I was Quality Controller in their 90-tonne melting shop and shortly after, Product Metallurgist. I was the first woman in the melting shop since World War II and a finalist for Cosmopolitan Magazine Women of Achievement Award. “I moved to Allvac as Process Metallurgist in their melting shops, became interested in continuous improvement and trained as Six Sigma Supplier Black Belt with GE Aero Engines. I also completed my MBA in Industrial Management. “I tried teaching as it was more family

friendly, but after one term, I took a temporary position as a Quality Engineer at Meritor Suspension Systems and within a week I was offered my first senior management role as Quality Manager, leading a team of 10 male engineers. “18 months later, I returned to Forgemasters as a senior manager in their melting shop. After 3 years of uncertainty in Chapter Eleven, I wanted more stability and joined Maher Ltd as Technical Manager. Maher had several women in senior management positions. “I’m passionate about helping companies in metals and manufacturing; enabling them to improve product and processes, remove risk and cost from their business, develop their

staff and ultimately improve customer satisfaction and become more profitable. “With 35 years’ experience in these sectors I’ve gained a broad range of experience which enables me to manage a variety of projects and contracts. Hogen Systems partnership project wins at the Water Industry Awards Rotherham based, Hogen Systems are delighted to announce that their project, in partnership with GenQuip GroundHog and Balfour Beatty, successfully earned them a Water Industry Award. The company was successful in picking up the 2019 Sustainability and Resource Recovery Initiative of the Year Award. The Water Industry Awards is the annual celebration of outstanding achievement and innovation in the UK water industry. The award recognised the partnership’s initiative which combines rainwater harvesting, atmospheric drinking water generation and renewable energy sources to provide facilities for onsite workers. Currently being trialled at Balfour Beatty’s Plant and Fleet Innovation Centre in Thurnscoe, the

initiative uses solar and wind energy to power a generator which produces water for drinking and other uses. Richard Mason, Product & Innovations

Manager, who led on the initiative for the partnership, said: “We are delighted to have won the Sustainability and Resource Recovery Initiative of the Year award. By collaborating with our supply chain partners, we were able to design innovative and sustainable solutions that offer better welfare facilities for our on-site staff and are better for the environment. The use of this innovation could reduce the need for water deliveries to remote areas and result in reduced carbon emissions from associated transport of water bowsers or tankers to site.”

Contractor of Year Airmaster announces three new staff appointments Leading Swallownest- based mechanical services company Airmaster, Industry Contractor of the Year, have announced three new appointments. Airmaster, who work nationwide from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, with bigname clients like Not on the High Street and Morgan Sindall Group, turn over around £9 million with 35 staff. Andy Benson, joins as finance manager. He started his career in the civil service at a Jobcentre and left to work for an engineering company, where he

stayed for 24 years, moving into finance before becoming MD, and now joining Airmaster for a fresh challenge. New estimator Adrian Gill, started his career as an apprentice plumber, became a commercial contractor and then the senior estimator for Ambitemp M&E. He is looking forward to building Airmaster’s mechanical division.

Scott Wolstenholme joins Airmaster as a project engineer after a 21-year career with Bradley Refrigeration, starting as an apprentice on leaving school. “I was looking for a new challenge and to progress my career further. After 13 years mainly working with farms on crop refrigeration, I am looking forward to learning new areas of the industry whilst sharing my knowledge.”

INTERNATIONAL TRADE

The UK State of Play – International Trade The Department for International Trade (DIT) has published their latest Trade & Investment Core Statistics Book on the 17th June 2019. The 75-page document notes the general export and import data by goods & services for both exports and imports, but also other economic data such as FDI information and ‘Top 10’ listings of which some are highlighted hereafter. • The Top 10 export markets for goods in the year ending April 2019 ranked by Export market £ billion: United States, Germany, Netherlands, France, Ireland, China, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Hong Kong. The last issue of The Bulletin highlighted the importance of Brexit preparation, entitled ‘Deal or No Deal’ – Time to act NOW! With a split of UK exports to the EU with a value of £174.9 billion representing 49.0% of total exports and Non-EU with a value of £181.7 billion representing 51.0%, the figures speak for themselves that the need for preparation is paramount. • The ten fastest growing export markets for UK goods between 2010-2018 are listed as follows, ranked by percentage growth: South Korea, Oman, Qatar, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Romania and Turkey.

• The ten fastest growing export markets for UK services between 2010-2018 shows as follows, ranked by percentage growth: Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Guernsey, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Czech Republic, China, Japan and Israel.

• Fastest growing markets - only including those with more than £1 billion in value in 2018 - for both UK exports of goods and services between 2010 and 2018 are:

Regionally, the Yorkshire & Humber region shows 10092 goods exporters with an export value of £18.2billion, whilst the number of service exporters in 2017 was 7600, representing a 5.2% UK share. The value of service exports is noted as £7.8

billion representing a UK share of only 3.1%. Watch this space as further major updates on the report are scheduled in July.
