HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Training for careers in Heavy Equipment Operation and Construction is now offered at Blue Ridge Community College! Along with expert instruction, these programs offer grant funding and tuition assistance programs that greatly reduce course costs and, in many cases, provide classes at no cost to the student.

The heavy construction industry is thriving in the BRCC service area, with numerous new projects underway in Rockingham, Augusta, and Highland counties. To meet the demand, companies engaged in excavation and design require skilled equipment operators. Blue Ridge provides comprehensive training, offering students access to cutting-edge

simulation equipment featuring authentic CAT controls within a safe and educational setting. Students receive instruction on four commonly used machines, gaining hands-on experience through state-of-the-art simulation. As the course advances, students transition to real equipment operation, including field trips to diverse job sites for practical application.

The Heavy Equipment training at BRCC includes industry credentials that employers value in their employees, including job skills training from the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, which is lead by Mike Rowe, best known from the hit TV series Dirty Jobs.

mikeroweWORKS has developed a work ethic curriculum that focuses on four pillars—work ethic, personal responsibility, delayed gratification, and a positive attitude. The program is modular and can be implemented in 12 one-hour lessons in the classroom or customized depending on the needs. It is based on a document that Mike wrote called the S.W.E.A.T. (Skill and Work Ethic Aren’t Taboo) Pledge, which outlines the qualities that he believes every student or worker can benefit from embracing; and this program is included in the Heavy Equipment training program.

For more information about upcoming classes in Heavy Equipment Operation, see page 11 of this magazine.
