LEARN NEW SKILLS & GROW
A HOB BY WITH PERSONAL ENRICHMENT CLASSES THIS SPRING!
AUCTIONEERING
A new class for this spring is Discover the Fascinating World of Auctions, led by master auctioneer Linford Berry, of Mountain Valley Auction Group.
“The rapid-fire chant of the auctioneer is mesmerizing and what initially draws most people in, but there are many more compelling reasons why they stay engaged. There is the prospect of a ‘deal’, the discovery of unusual and historic items, a sense of community, and the satisfaction and competitive spirit of winning the bid on a desirable item.”
Students will learn some basics of auction law and then get into foundational bid calling skills to get a feel for what it’s like to be the auctioneer behind the microphone. Linford says students will also discover, “how this dynamic tool drives markets in everything from cattle sales to fine art and today’s online bidding wars!”

QUILTING
Instructor Kathy Amend is excited to help beginning and intermediate level quilters gain confidence with her two classes: Quilting: Beginning Your Quilting Journey and Quilting: Building Quilt Blocks.
“I think students enjoy and are amazed when they create something beautiful and something that will last a lifetime,” she explained.
Students in her Beginning Your Quilting Journey class will make a quilt from start to finish, and learn about tools, fabric selection, cutting techniques, construction, and finishing. In the Building Quilt Blocks course, students will enhance their basic quilting skills by learning how to create flying geese, half square triangles, Lemoyne stars, and more.
POTTERY
BRCC’s pottery and ceramics courses have been a favorite for thousands in the community! This spring’s class line up is more robust than ever and offers opportunities for beginners to experienced
students to enjoy, including:
Wheel Thrown/Hand Building Creating with Clay Beginning Pottery and Beyond Mugs Galore Spring into Ceramics
In particular, seasoned instructor Julie Foster is excited about some weekend options. “Weekend classes give people the opportunity to try something new and get a taste of the fun. One does not need to be artistic to enjoy the clay experience. It can be one of the best forms of therapy or self-care for an individual.”
She says that seeing students develop skills beyond their expectations and the sense of pride they feel at a final product is particularly rewarding. She added, “Each class seems to develop a sense of community and encouragement among classmates.”
Repeat student Kylie Miller agrees, “I think one of the really special things about the pottery classes at Blue Ridge has been the community. Many of the people who take the classes keep coming back, so you really get to know each other. The studio is a really welcoming place, everyone is so supportive and cheers you on right from the beginning.”
Kylie has been taking ceramics courses at BRCC since 2016, and has even taken some classes more than once, including several courses with Julie! “Whether you’ve been doing pottery for years or just beginning, Julie is great at accessing individuals and finding projects that they can be successful with.”
For anyone with an interest in pottery, whether beginner or with some experience, Kylie definitely recommends taking a class! “It’s a great opportunity to meet with new people and challenge yourself, and it can be nice way to just take a break from everything else and have fun. Not to mention there’s something really amazing about holding an object that you yourself created from just a hunk of clay.”
