KATHLEEN GASS MANUFACTURING LIAISON Kathleen administers a VA General Assembly appropriation, working with both BRCC and James Madison University to ensure curriculum and graduates’ skills are aligned with the needs of Merck and other manufacturers in the Shenandoah Valley. Kathleen oversees the “Job Starter: Advanced Manufacturing Training Boot Camps” and coordinates manufacturing internships for college students and summer camps and year round opportunities for high school students. Prior to joining BRCC, Kathleen worked at Gilead Sciences and Merck for 18 years. Kathleen earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. JULIE MILLER SUPERVISOR OF PLECKER CENTER RENTALS Julie handles rentals at the Robert Plecker Workforce Center and oversees Workforce and Continuing Education operations. She has been with BRCC since 2016, working in numerous capacities within the Workforce division. She currently assists clients with all aspects of professional meetings and events in the Plecker Center and other college locations. She has even helped to plan a wedding on campus! Andrea recently moved back to the area and began working at BRCC in April. She oversees the “JobStarter Advanced Manufacturing Training Program” in which she coordinates partnerships between local manufacturing employers and job-seeking adults in the Shenandoah Valley. Before coming to BRCC, she taught in the Fairfax County Public School system where she taught business and technology.

NEW CREATING THE COMPOSITE IMAGE Have you ever seen a photo that was just so incredible you wondered how they “got the shot”? Odds are, it was a composite image made up of two (or more) photographs to create one – rather convincing – final image. In this class, discover techniques and tools to select and/or create image components that can be realistically merged and combined with other images so that the result appears as singular image captured by the camera. Familiarity with image editing with Photoshop is required. A camera with Manual mode and a tripod are strongly recommended.

NEW PAINTING WITH LIGHT USING LONG EXPOSURES Photographers often stop shooting when the sun goes down or grab a flash to capture an image. However, there is a lot more photography to explore at night or in a darkened environment by using moonlight, starlight, or even by adding your own light. Experiment with light painting techniques to create images that are unique and sometimes otherworldly. The results will amaze you and open your world to an entirely new dimension in photography. FF PIPE WELDING I: SMAW Focuses on the techniques used for welding pipe. The shielded metal arc welding process is used to perform practice welds on pipe diameters from 2 to 12 inches. Basic pipe-fitting practices will be demonstrated using butt weld and socket weld fittings to progress through learning to weld pipe in horizontal and vertical positions. One-on-one coaching, welding demonstrations and welding videos will be used to illustrate the techniques the student must follow to successfully pass the 6G qualification test.

This class is designed to introduce a student to machine tools and machining. Students will learn about precision measuring tools and how to use them, including: how to obtain precise measurements, how to read and understand mechanical drawings, what tolerances are and how a machinist makes parts within the specific dimensions.

The fundamentals for manual machine tool practices for the lathe, mill, and drill press will be explained and demonstrated during this class. Topics include: machine tool safety, proper drilling speeds, and different types of drill bits and their coatings related to drill press operations. You will work side-by-side with your instructor to complete NIMS machining projects on new ProtoTrak machines. FF TURNING OPERATIONS II: CHUCKING This advanced level machining course explains the operation of the manual lathe in regards to inside and outside machining practices. This will include: turning safety, lathe controls, single-point threading, tapping, fits and tolerances, measurement, process control, tooling and lathe set-up. Proper set-up and use of a four-jaw chuck will be demonstrated and explained. Many lathe operations use tooling with carbide inserts, but a machinist must know the proper technique for grinding the surfaces of a solid carbide lathe tool and applying the proper rake angles. Tool grinding is discussed and demonstrated. There will be a NIMS Chucking project as well as a NIMS online exam (Chucking) to earn NIMS credentials.

EXPLORING THE BUBBLY

The first certificate in this series will help you learn how to properly choose and serve wine at your dinner parties, this Wine Appreciation certificate is a great way to get started on your wine journey. A certificate in Wine Appreciation will be awarded if you complete all 4 classes. All classes will be held at Yelping Dog Wine at 9 E. Beverley St, Staunton.
