Cyber Security Student Interview

T

hree recent graduates of the BRCC Cybersecurity program share their experiences—from how they chose the field of cybersecurity, to what they like best about their new careers. Karen, Jay, and Ashley are all Cybersecurity Analysts with Tiber Creek Consulting.

While the company is based in Fairfax, VA, they have a remote office in downtown Waynesboro, VA.

What was your previous career?

Karen: I worked at a public middle school for 13 years, most recently as a Student Information System Clerk.

Jay: Currently I am co-owner and operator of Brown & Co. Hair Design in Harrisonburg, VA. Ashley: PC support at Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center.

What sparked your interest in the field of cybersecurity?

Karen: I’ve always been interested in IT. Finding out about the GO Virginia Grant and BRCC’s cybersecurity program piqued my interest in the direction of cybersecurity.

Jay: I began taking classes at Blue Ridge out of necessity. I wanted to network my work computers with my home computer, and thought that with a little instruction I could do it myself. In order to take the networking class I had to take some prerequisite information system classes, and was hooked from that point.

Ashley: I have been interested in computers since I was a child.

What were your impressions/feelings about the BRCC program?

Karen: The program was great. It provided me with lots of resources for cybersecurity training and certification.

The instructor, Dan OBrien, was so helpful in providing information on career opportunities and was always willing to provide feedback and advice whenever I needed it.

Ashley: I enjoyed the class. Dan did a good job explaining the individual topics and helping us with the labs.

What is most challenging about your job?

Karen: I learn new things every day and consuming so much information in a relatively short amount of time can be challenging at times. But, I love it.

Jay: The most difficult part of the job is taking technical information and converting it to language that can be understood by non-technical people.

Ashley: I have worked with computers for a while but cybersecurity is definitely different from anything else that I have ever done.

What do you like most about your job?

Karen: Tiber Creek Consulting is a great company. They created a tool, IntelliGRC, to help streamline and automate cybersecurity assessments for organizations. I use this tool daily and it’s so exciting to be a part of helping companies reduce their information security risks.

Jay: Coming from the service industry, I love to help people solve problems. The pay and benefits are great and I really like the flexibility and the ability to work remotely.

Ashley: I really like the flexible work arrangements.

Any future plans for more training?

Karen: Yes, I plan to earn CompTIA A+, Network+ and CySA+ certification by September 2020. CISA will be next in line after those.

Jay: I am currently studying for the CompTia Advanced Security Practitioner or CASP certificate.

Ashley: I am currently studying for the CySA+ certification.

Computer Coding Boot Camp $1500 FastForward Tuition/$4500 Full Tuition Complete this full-stack web developer boot camp in just seven weeks and become a viable candidate for many local technology jobs! Learn HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Bootstrap, Node.js, PHP, SQL, MySQL, and more in structured and intensive classes.

Gain key programming and technical problem-solving skills. Earn your Microsoft Technology certification in HTML5 Application Development Fundamentals by passing the certification exam given during class.

The program is competitive and will be limited to two groups of 12 students each. Candidates will be selected based on qualifications and ability to commit to the program. Ideal applicants will have some basic knowledge of information technology and computer coding.

IT Certification Prep

Selected individuals receive cyber security training for approximately $300, thanks to grants secured by Blue Ridge Community College. The goal of the grants is to train and employ Cyber Security Analysts to work at exciting and challenging new jobs in the valley. A number of our program’s graduates have already obtained good paying, high tech jobs right here in Waynesboro and Harrisonburg!

Anyone interested in pursuing a job in cyber security in the Shenandoah Valley may apply, and the ideal candidate has some information technology, networking, and basic cyber security education and/or experience.

Military veterans are encouraged to apply.

The program includes a cyber security review course, CompTIA Security+ Exam, Cybrary online training, and on-the-job training, and will take approximately three months to complete. Classes are held weekly in the evening for two months at BRCC, and on-the-job training will occur at private company offices in the cities of Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, and Staunton.

This is a competitive program and participants will be selected based on qualifications and ability to commit to the program. Individuals who are currently employed, or in college, are eligible.

Phlebotomy Technician Fall 2020 $733 FastForward Tuition/$2199 Full Tuition The art of drawing blood is called phlebotomy and is a very delicate and intricate skill in the medical world. Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, and donations.

Hiring the right people is often cited as the number one concern of businesses today. With unemployment at an all-time low, we are all competing for the best and brightest workers. Managers or supervisors responsible for hiring have a direct impact on building a strong, qualified workforce for their organizations. Participants will focus on techniques to hire talented people who enable the organization to achieve its strategic goals. We will explore the importance of linking recruitment goals with overall company goal and mission. Then look at several options to recruit and select employees both effectively and legally.

Throughout the course we will examine current issues in talent acquisition, such as leveraging social media and hiring analytics to ensure better quality hires. We will also look at how to onboard employees to promote employee commitment and engagement.

Virginia Artists in the Marketplace (VA-AIM) Virginia Artists in the Marketplace (VA-AIM) is the first residency program of its kind in the Shenandoah Valley. The 2020 program is presented in collaboration with Arts Council of the Valley, BRCC and studioELL. Bringing a new cohort together in May 2020, the group will dive deep into their studio practices and what it means to be a professional artist in today’s contemporary moment. Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost: American Icons Frost and Dickinson wrote some of our favorite poems in American literature. We remember their lines, but maybe not the contexts from which they originated. We know, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,” but what does this mean? Why did Frost write this poem? We heard: “Because I could not stop for Death/ He kindly stopped for me,” but what is going on here? Who is this person and why couldn’t they stop for Death? Talking about these poets, their poems, and their lives will provide a deeper appreciation for their writings. We will revisit America in the 1800’s when Dickinson was writing her poems; talk about the America of the early 20th century that Frost, ironically, had to leave in order to become America’s favorite poet. Theatre Workshop for Youth: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (ages 9-16) If you are between the ages of 9 and 16 (grades 4-11), you can participate in a 13-week workshop culminating in a Fine Arts Center Theatre performance! In addition to dramatic exercises designed to hone acting skills, you’ll rehearse a wonderful adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Follow that rabbit to a delightful, entertaining world of childhood fantasies. Alice journeys into a world of talking animals, comic royalty and races where the contestants run in circles! There are also the Mad Hatter’s frantic tea party, the watch-carrying White Rabbit and talking flowers. Along the way, Alice must deal with a sneezing duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice watching a trial, but she suddenly finds herself the accused! The play gives a modern view to an old classic, where nonsense makes quite good sense. Welding Fundamentals $666 FastForward Tuition/$1998 Full Tuition Learn and practice the basic welding processes most commonly used in industrial fabrication: OxyFuel Welding, Brazing and Cutting along with Plasma Cutting, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and Gas Metal Arc Welding (including Flux-Core Welding). This class also covers safety procedures, common shop practices, welding tools and equipment, and welding drawing interpretation.

The second part of the class will focus on refining skills required to make flat, vertical and overhead welds on Steel Plate.

You’ll be engaged in extensive practice welding using the SMAW (also known as Stick Welding) and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding). The completed course prepares students to take the AWS qualification test in 1G (Flat), 3G (Vertical) and 4G (Overhead) positions in accordance with D1.1 Structural Welding Code-Steel. These skills will prepare students for employment as entrylevel Structural Welders.

Includes an 8-week basic skills class and an 8-week intermediate skills class. Classes run mid Feb–Jun, May–Sep, and mid July–Dec with day and evening hours available.

Pipe Welding I: SMAW $566 FastForward Tuition/$1698 Full Tuition This class focuses on the techniques used for welding pipe. The shielded metal arc (SMAW) welding process is used to perform practice welds on pipe diameters from 2–12 inches. Basic pipe-fitting practices will be demonstrated using butt weld and socket weld fittings to progress through learning to weld pipe in horizontal and vertical positions.

One-on-one coaching, welding demonstrations and welding videos will be used to illustrate the techniques the student must follow to successfully pass the 6G qualification test.

All Pipe Welding Qualification testing is done in accordance with ASME Section IX Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code Steel. (ASME SMAW certification) Prerequisite – Welding Fundamentals and 3G welding certification.

Welding Fabrication I: GMAW $375 FastForward Tuition/$1125 Full Tuition This class focuses on welding and fabrication skills used in building welded metal projects.

Students will create a working drawing and bill of materials, factor in total costs and weight of their project, cut and tack-weld all components together, and make final welds to complete the job. Welding safety using various welding processes (GTAW, GMAW and SMAW) and safe shop practices will be discussed and demonstrated.

The class will also have a team project utilizing the Ercolina Pipe Bending system where each team will build a section of handrail according to shop drawings. This project will include job planning, material cost estimation, pipebending, and team building skills.

Training on all types of weld shop equipment will be included and students will build a small welded project to keep. (AWS GMAW certification) Prerequisite – Welding Fundamentals or previous welding experience is recommended.

Pipe Welding II: GTAW $566 FastForward Tuition/$1698 Full Tuition This class will provide the student with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to do both manual and orbital GTAW welding of carbon steel pipe and sanitary stainless tubing. The GTAW welding process will be used for practice welds on pipe diameters from 2–6 inches on butt weld, socket weld, and groove weld pipe fittings. Walking the cup welding technique, manual purge welding set up, weld parameters, purge gas verification, flow rates, and basic pipe-fitting practices will be covered. Orbital welding training will be covered on stainless sanitary tubing using an Orbitalum Orbital Welding system. All stainless sanitary welding will be done in accordance with ASME BPE1997 and ASME B31.3. (ASME GTAW certification) Prerequisite – Welding Fundamentals and/or previous GTAW welding experience is recommended.

MACHINING Fundamentals of Fabrication $299 FastForward Tuition/$897 Full Tuition This class is designed to introduce a student to machine tools and machining. Students will learn about precision measuring tools and how to use them, including: how to obtain precise measurements, how to read and understand mechanical drawings, what tolerances are and how a machinist makes parts within the specific dimensions. Machine shop safety and safe practices will be discussed and demonstrated. The types of machine tools that are used to create complex components in industry and how they work will be covered, as well as cutting speeds and feed rates for milling and turning operations. The NIMS Machining credential program will be explained and the first NIMS project the students will make will be reviewed. Students will take a NIMS online quiz (Measurement, Materials and Safety) to earn a NIMS credential. Class fee includes book. This class will meet in the assigned classroom (T114) on our main campus, in the Technology Building.

The fundamentals for manual machine tool practices for the lathe, mill, and drill press will be explained and demonstrated during this class.

Topics include: machine tool safety, proper drilling speeds, and different types of drill bits and their coatings related to drill press operations.

You will work side-by-side with your instructor to complete NIMS machining projects on new ProtoTrak machines. Students will complete a NIMS Machine Tool project and take a NIMS online quiz (Job Planning, Benchwork, and Layout) to earn a NIMS credential. Safety glasses are required. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Fabrication.

This class continues to explain the technical aspects of manual machine tool practices as they relate to more advanced drill press operations, including job planning and management tasks, benchwork tasks, basic mathematics, applying the machinery’s handbook, basic measurement, basic machining theory, and layout. Students will create a NIMS machining project that will be completed with the instructor working side-by-side.

The class will be completed with an online NIMS quiz (Drill Press Skills) to earn a NIMS credential.

Safety glasses are required.

Turning Operations I: Turning Between Centers (Machine Tool Practices) $533 FastForward Tuition/$1599 Full Tuition This intermediate-level machining course will continue to explain turning operations on the manual lathe with the addition of detailed instruction in turning a part between centers.

Different turning operations that will be performed on the NIMS student project will be discussed and demonstrated, such as threading, knurling, and parting. Job planning with respect to turning between centers will be discussed and demonstrated.

There will be a NIMS turning project as well as a NIMS online exam (Turning/Chucking and Turning/Turning between centers) to earn NIMS credentials. Prerequisite – Fundamentals of Fabrication, Machine Tool I, Machine Tool II, and Machine Tool III: Milling.

Machine Tool III: Milling $299 FastForward Tuition/$897 Full Tuition This class introduces the manual milling machine.

The student will learn about each part and function of the machine, machine tool safety, the different cutting tools and materials, as well as different milling operations and set up. Students will be given drawings of milling projects they will make using the machining skills learned during the class. NIMS credential will be earned by successful completion of milling projects and online testing. Heat Treating and Metallurgy $299 FastForward Tuition/$897 Full Tuition Get hands-on experience in milling, precision grinding, metallurgy, heat treating, and tempering of tool steels while completing the NIMS project 2.7b – Surface Grinding. Learn the components and safe operation of the surface grinder.

Use hardness testers, Rockwell and Brinnel scales. Gain an understanding of tool steel elements and different uses of tool steels in industry. Prerequisite – Fundamentals of Fabrication, Machine Tool I, Machine Tool II, and Machine Tool III: Milling Wednesdays & Thursdays, Jul 22–Sep 10, 6–9 pm; Instructor: Todd Day

The Art of Knifemaking This class will take you from start to finish through the design, grinding, finishing and polishing of your own custom fixed-blade knife. Free-hand flat and hollow grinding techniques will be demonstrated, as well as heat treating and tempering, as participants fabricate a knife blade of their own design. Learn silver-brazing techniques, design bolsters and hand guards for your blade. Discuss handle materials, designs, and decorative file work. Finishing practices will help you complete your own custom knife!

Register two weeks in advance of first class date. All knife class students must be familiar with basic hand tools and workshop practices. Safety instruction will be covered during the first class period. Clear safety glasses and leather work gloves are required on first day of class. Preparing for the FAA Part 107 Certification and the Basics of Drone Technology $225 FastForward Tuition/$675 Full Tuition Would you like to learn how to fly a drone with skill while ensuring safe and legal operation? This course focuses on the content required for an individual to earn the FAA Part 107 certificate, which is required to operate a drone commercially.

While also giving the student hands-on flying time with provided DJI drones, students will gain knowledge in operating regulations and procedures, safety, airspace classifications, weather, maintenance and inspection, and loading/performance. Drones serve a variety of essential purposes in a number of industries, whether it’s real estate, agriculture, engineering or media and the industrial applications of UAV technology continue to grow.
