ENHANCING THE VALUE OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE MAINTAINING THE MOMENTUM FOR CHANGE

Over the last two years we have witnessed a global focus on women, especially in a professional sense. After the ‘Me Too’ movement took hold significantly in 2017.

The emphasis on supporting women to feel empowered and speak out about the inequality and sexism they have experienced has created a greatly enhanced understanding of our self-value.

This can be seen not only in our professional skills and experience, but also from a personal perspective, in terms of our nurturing and EQ (emotional intelligence) skills for building strong relationships.

The 100-year anniversary of the suffragette movement and certain women gaining the right to vote has given further prominence to how far we have come – and we are moving in the right direction.

However, if you Google ‘Female CEOs’ the results are far from inspiring. There are reports that female board membership and the number of female CEO’s is stagnating, that we are most likely to be the first CEO’s fired; and there’s still that inevitable glass ceiling on how much we are paid vs our male counterparts in the same roles.

So, what do we need to do to keep moving away from the stereotypes and make a significant change in the way we are viewed in the workplace?

While it’s clear that momentum is building and shining its spotlight on the inequality we're fighting, it's still paramount that we nurture the energy, drive and enthusiasm to stay focused on that goal.

Our strength lies in continuing to support and showcase our solidarity like those suffragettes did 100 years ago. By understanding where the challenges are, we can focus on highlighting what else needs to be done. This will then help to improve the value of our contribution and involvement in the progression of business and world issues.

This is not a them vs us battleground we're fighting and it’s not necessarily about feminism either – the issues are much wider when it comes to equality. What it's about is humanity, and respecting the contribution we all have to offer regardless of gender, race, religion or anything else that is used to stereotype, demoralise or demean each other.

We will continue to see the development of women’s organisations and groups, as well as female business owners empowering each other to progress within our professions, creating programmes designed to give us the confidence to step-up and be counted for the contribution we are making.

More than that, there'll be the understanding and recognition that we're here to perform our roles to the highest degree possible and to enhance our lives and the world we live in, alongside our male peers.

In our first feature interview we are excited to talk to Tracey Livingston of TraceyLiv.com Coaching & Training. Tracey has spent the last two yeas building a successful coaching business in London after moving to the UK from the US and marrying the love of her life, Chris.

On Personal Development...

Introduce yourself, what you do and what led you to becoming a business and transformational coach?

My name is TraceyLiv and I’m an American living in London [my hubby is German!]. What I do is simple: help people discover and achieve whatever they want. I work with entrepreneurs, leaders and dreamers who seek to up-level in their businesses and lives so they can live life in prosperity, and on their own terms.

The path to becoming an associate certified coach with the International Coaching Federation was an interesting one for another day, but I believe I’ve always had a gift to pull out the genius in others. I’ve been trained in dialogue & conflict resolution, have a degree in psychology, read endlessly and have a knack for cutting the BS and getting to the truth. The work that I do is highly intuitive, and I regularly channel/tap into spirituality with my clients.

There’s no denying that the advent of email, of Skype, of social media, of the internet has supported me to live, work and communicate from wherever I am in the world.

Are there any ways in which you think social media has held you back or not supported your goals?

The evil of social media is comparison, but I’ve got thick skin. I’ve done enough inner work to know who I am, to trust myself, to be authentically myself, and if I like what someone else is doing online, I appreciate it!

My parents raised me to be and do anything I wanted and they encouraged my own uniqueness. I feel blessed that the messaging I heard was that the world was my oyster, not my cage. How much that is worth? It’s priceless.

Nothing is negative; it’s all part of the contract we’re here to experience in this lifetime. Difficulties gave me strength, courage and sheer freakin’ grit.

Do you have any tips for people who are shy about putting themselves ‘out there’ and being the ‘face’ of their brand?

Just start from where you are. I remember being in college at 19 years old. Sitting in the back of every classroom and terrified the professor would call on me.

Oh, I knew the answers! But if I was called on, I would ALWAYS turn bright red, hate when people looked at me and then stutter my way through answers. I wanted to hide.

Then I realised that this doesn't help me. I had to speak up to get help from others and to get the scholarships I wanted to travel the world. I put myself in public speaking situations and HATED IT, but it made me stronger. I did moot court, model senate, facilitated for 100 people in Dubai, and now it all looks like I’ve always been this way. But let me tell you...I was 19 years old 13 years ago! Just start and you’ll blow your own mind.

It’s important because I am an expert and a leader in what I do. I’ve filmed for an Amazon Prime documentary last July in France...not because of my brand, but because of WHO I AM. Being amazing at your craft, being 100% yourself and letting that shine on and off camera are the keys to success.

What sparked your passion for personal branding?

My core experience started off in the corporate financial marketing world and naturally progressed into brand and business development through the projects that I worked on. Personal branding became a much bigger focus for me when I started my business. What sparked your passion for social media and online branding?

A few years back I won a place on a day workshop called ‘Project You’. Over the course of the day the host tried to pull out of each attendee what our super skills were and what we felt was holding us back in our career. At that point in time I was on several social media platforms but had no real training. If truth be told, platforms like Twitter terrified me due to my lack of knowledge. By the time the workshop had ended I had vowed to tackle my demons and sign up for some social media training and

Social media and blogging is perfect for an introvert like me and I’m a firm believer that you don’t need to be the loudest in the room to make an impact. You just need to be authentic, social and consistent.

What would you say is the one consistent theme people should focus on for developing themselves on the main social channels?

The main theme is to simply be you. Be authentic and true to yourself. There is nothing more disheartening than someone creating an online persona and then when you meet them in real life the two facets don’t marry. Ideally your social media channels should be a warm introduction as to how you are as a person. When people meet you, you want them to feel like they already know you and create that essential know, like and trust factor. This is so important. The 3 main rules which apply to all social media platforms are 1) Be social (it’s in the name) 2) Be consistent (whether this is daily, weekly or monthly) 3) Follow the 80/20 rule (this means that 80% of the time you need to educate, inform, engage and motivate and 20% of the time you can push your own content). Even then it’s a soft push and a focus on serving versus selling. The trick to all social media is to GIVE GIVE GIVE and to essentially nurture your community. What is the 1 area of your own personal brand that you would like to improve?

This is an easy one for me. Public speaking! As an introverted business owner I’ve learned that I need to put myself out there more for the sake of my business. I naively thought that my life and business would all be online but I still need to spend almost 50% of my time doing face to face networking, workshops and events as people buy people so they need to meet you. I’ve embraced various mediums such as webinars, podcasts, workshops, skype calls and have even gone so far as to host my own events which is nerve racking. I’ve also embraced video and created my own Facebook LIVES. Like social media, I need to perfect video and my speaking at events and workshops. I’ve done a day training course to date and may need to give Toastmasters a visit. Time to smash through that comfort zone again!
