The breeders brought an incredible offering for last year’s sale. I know that this year’s sale will even be better. I think you will find this offering to be outstanding. The consignors have brought the best to the table for your consideration, and I know that you will not be disappointed. I can certainly tell you that there have been many a discussion at the heifer pen at Log Land Farms over the past few months. Most of you know the pain associated with making the difficult choices of which females to retain and which to let go. It is truly painful letting go of this group of females. In honor of our good friend Glenn Vaughn, we will be donating a portion of the proceeds of this year’s sale to the Fullblood Fleckvieh Simmental Federation to be used for the further marketing and promotion of the cattle in which he so dearly loved. We will be offering a Friday Night event this year to be held at the Cherokee Casino and Resort. The event will provide an opportunity to meet other breeders and sale consignors. Additionally, there will be an event held at the Hotel pool (heated if necessary) during the same time frame for children as well. Here we are again, it is hard to believe that it has already been a year since the first Heritage Sale. Time certainly flies when you are having fun. I cannot begin to explain how excited I was with the response and involvement that occurred with last years sale. My goal has always been to create an event that all breeders will look forward to each year. The focus of the event is not only to find elite cattle that will improve breeders’ operations but most of all to have an opportunity to fellowship with other breeders. I certainly believe that we are on our way to making this event a must for breeders throughout the country.

The line-up in Fleckvieh Heritage 2022 is outstanding from end to end. A few new age and breeding categories have been added, including Summer Born Pairs, Open Donors, Age Advantaged Opens ready to breed, Bred Cows in addition to a stunning set of Bred Heifers and Elite Open Heifers. The semen, embryo, and flush categories are cutting edge. Choice lots of heifer calves are a highlight. Additionally, the majority of the young calves have been haltered. The show incentive plan for Fleckvieh exhibitors with cattle from this event is breed Theleading.Heritage of every lot is [to the best of my ability] 100% Fleckvieh Fullblood Simmental. This status qualifies us at a very high standard of genetic purity and the only sale in North America that can boast such. Maintaining this level of excellence best infiltrates the customer base through offering the greatest opportunity for genetic improvement and hybrid vigor in a crossbreeding program. Without question there are some tremendous genetics within the Fleckvieh and Fullblood gene pools who may have other origins included. Setting our goals to be 100% FLECKVIEH takes the guess work out. Every lot or purchase may have options for transportation, show prep, calving out in an imminent scenario. Attention Juniors: ** Log Land Farms is excited to offer an incentive plan for individuals that purchase a heifer at the 2022 Fleckvieh Heritage Sale. A premium of $1000 will be paid for Grand Champion and $500 for Reserve Champion at the 2022 NAILE, 2023 Cattleman’s Congress and/or AJSA Jr. National Show. In the south the only thing we like extra crispy, extra spicy, extra hot and dripping off our elbows is Chicken! Summer 2022 has been extra crispy, extra hot and sweat dripping off every body part. Grass dried up, overwhelming heat, skies devoid of clouds, threat of fires, and still Fleckvieh cows thrived. Being a desert Yankee transplant to the Southern sauna proved I’m not nearly as adaptable as the Northern cattle have been. They are still giving it their all producing and working hard to perform. At weaning the cows’ udders still budged, proving their contribution to their calves. These observations don’t read on EPDs. Fleckvieh cattle prove to be most adaptable to all production scenarios. Continued optimism in the beef industry is strong!

As this sale implies “Fleckvieh Heritage” the concept reaches far beyond the cattle and pedigrees. It’s the people; who have commitment, standards of excellence, passion, humble generosity, vision, and willingness to spread the fellowship of our great breed of cattle. 2022 marked the passing of three gentlemen that I would like to dedicate this catalog to: Mr. Ross Small of Dora Lee Genetics, ON, Canada; Mr. Glenn Vaughn of Rocking V, KY, USA; and Mr. Darrell Maronda, DFM, AB, Canada. Their impact on me personally will always be cherished. Ross taught me many lessons of life, not only in the cattle arena. I considered him one of my greatest mentors of all time. Curator of a small elite herd, his impact on the heritage of the Fleckvieh breed is enormous. We generally talked every Sunday, while Betty was putting in a good word for us at church, and the main question was always, “What’s happening in the Fleckvieh world.” “What will be the most important traits our customers need? What can we do about molding this vision?” Ross and I toured other herds in Ontario, debriefed after each and it was an honor to host both he and Dennis for a tour at Double Bar D Farms for a very dusty side by side ride. We discussed genetics, patience in proving cow families, using the most up to date DNA resources, and often the release of stress of everyday life’s frustrations. Ross also tried to make every “first” sale, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to last year as I know he wanted to. The Dora Lee prefix is a “Brand of Excellence” recognized world wide. This year’s sale has direct progeny from Dora Lee Genetics. Heritage isn’t born it’s earned…Ross proved this. Glenn, a man of discipline, direction and leadership. Firstly, I would like to extend a huge “thank you” for his military service. His tactics may have been slightly different, but the lessons to be learned all the more important. In 2009, I was able to purchase RV Marek and RV Nickelback 6U off the cows as their quality was superb. The “RV” brand on Nickelback will go down in the history books. There was always an open door to visit and stay over during my travels and tour the steep hills with Fleckvieh cattle grazing. The narrow entrance on Pond Lick Road was a little tricky mind you, for big trailers. Glenn purchased Outback of Double Bar D 255Y and he went on to be a very impactful sire as well. His leadership in the FSFF serving as President of the organization is greatly appreciated. Ironically, we all toured after the Bar 5 sale, Dora Lee and Rick Batty’s herd and ate at the best Fish and Chips in London, ONT. A little snow wasn’t going to hold us back from looking at cattle, and my savvy driving skills were put to the test. A stoic Fleckvieh breeder, unique character, unforgettable sense of humor and laugh, and a lifetime of being a Canadian Cowboy in an iconic novel over a half of century long is Fleckvieh’s breeder; Darrell Maronda. The DFM prefix will forever be recognized by the DFM type and kind. Darrell and Joyce’s story is a “rags to riches” in Alberta’s southern prairies. Darrell didn’t breed Fleckvieh cattle for the glory or a quick buck. He loved them! As part of the original group of breeders establishing Fleck Fest, Darrell always brought his best to town. The resulting purchases often went on to be the mainstay cows in respectable herds in North America. DFM Marcus was a highlight at Fleckfest, recognized worldwide. Meeting Darrell with his hand extended, the other holding a tottie or barley pop, he quickly gave an aura of welcomeness. Don’t get me wrong by the least bit, Darrell was one tough SOB! Touring cows there was never dull. First stop, refreshments then off to see a spectacular set of cows. Pickups were meant to be used, not pretty play toys. As once we were driving around the center pivot irrigated pasture and slammed into a wheel track that we grossly underestimated. The silver Dodge didn’t drive quite the same afterwards. I don’t think my head left a dent on the dash, but our minds were clear as the day is long. Proud of those powerful Fleck cows, our heads were “on pivot” to see the next one. Long cattle drives home from community pasture, cropping for the cattle feed, helping a calf nurse, or roping one to treat foot rot on the range, Darrell loved his cattle. As thick skinned and stubborn as he could be, Darrell always was willing to do a little horse trading to help a young breeder out. The day I saw DFM Trudy 708T from a far distance, I had to ask if she was for sale. She was the only bred that didn’t get included in a large shipment to Mexico. I had to have her and we both knew she would have been a top seller at Fleckfest. It took several days of negotiations, and we made a deal. A firm handshake and his word were golden. Her influence is seen in this sale as lots 15-18. We shared great times laughing, pedigree chat, and even crying. Atop a well or partially broke brumby, Darrell is proudly wearing his worn boots, one pantleg tucked, and a brushpopper shirt. The legend rides on with the DFM brand. 2022, is a time all breeders need and appreciate fellowship more than ever. Shake the hand of those around you at the sale and seek out meeting others. Ross, Glenn and Darrell are proof the cattle are the conduit bringing people together with synergetic goals. Please take a moment to appreciate these three incredible men in the heritage of Fleckvieh cattle. You never know how appreciated a warm bed, shower, and a seat at the table is worth. The Small’s, Vaughn’s, and Maronda’s always extended that invitation.
