Welcome to the Esplanade, the timelessly beautiful hotel that recently celebrated its 94th birthday and received notable recognition in Geneva with the award for Best European Historical Hotel 2019. Despite its years, the Esplanade’s stylishness, elegance and charm, which back in 1925 attracted passengers from the famous Orient Express, has today made the hotel a historical icon of Zagreb. Our Esplanade is really something special and I’m looking forward to recording such moments and creating new history in this magazine. On this occasion, we had the opportunity to talk to our dear guest, the musical virtuoso Maksim Mrvica, who has achieved enormous success both in Croatia and internationally, and who after three years performed to a packed Lisinski Concert hall in Zagreb once again. We greatly appreciate successful people and it is always a pleasure to present them in interviews, which is why we also have an interview with Nenad Bakić, a successful Croatian entrepreneur who the Financial Times included in a list of 100 people, organisations, and companies that are defining the future of Europe, and who shared with us his story and plan to revitalise the well-known Croatian brand Varteks.

Zagreb is awakening, and this spring sees an even richer programme and numerous creative festivals that will be held in some of the most beautiful promenades and parks. We’ve selected some of the most interesting ones for you and eagerly await the return of open-air life in the city. We also bring you the story of Hum, the smallest city in the world. Dobro došli u Esplanadu, bezvremensku ljepoticu koja je nedavno proslavila svoj 94. rođendan i prigodno primila značajno priznanje u Ženevi za najbolji europski povijesni hotel 2019. Unatoč godinama, Esplanadina otmjenost, elegancija i šarm kojima je davne 1925. privlačila putnike poznatog Orient Expressa i danas ovaj hotel čine povijesnom ikonom Zagreba. Naša Esplanada uistinu je posebna i veseli me da putem ovog časopisa bilježimo te trenutke i stvaramo neku novu povijest. Ovaj put smo imali priliku razgovarati s našim dragim gostom, glazbenim virtuozom Maksimom Mrvicom koji je postigao golemi uspjeh u Hrvatskoj i svijetu, a nakon tri godine ponovno se našao na pozornici pred prepunom dvoranom 'Lisinski' u Zagrebu. Izuzetno cijenimo uspješne ljude i drago nam je da ih možemo predstaviti kroz intervjue. Tako smo došli i do Nenada Bakića, uspješnog hrvatskog poduzetnika kojeg je Financial Times uvrstio na popis 100 ljudi, organizacija i kompanija koji određuju budućnost Europe. This summer, this romantic promenade will once again host daily concerts, art exhibitions and workshops, theatre performances, and dances. Summer on Stross, in the spirit of the Parisian neighbourhood of Montmartre, every year offers open-air cinema, a glass of excellent wine, and installations in its spaces, all accompanied by a carefully selected musical programme. First-rate jazz, romantic classics, nostalgia from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘80s, and Latin music are just some of the evening musical delights on Stross.

Najromantičnije šetalište i ovog ljeta otvara svoja vrata uz svakodnevne koncerte, likovne izložbe i radionice, kazališne predstave i plesnjake. „Ljeto na Strossu“ u duhu pariškoga kvarta već tradicionalno nudi ugođaj otvorenog kina, čašicu izvrsnog vina, instalacije uklopljene u prostor i sve uz pažljivo odabrani glazbeni program. Vrhunski jazz, romantični evergrini, nostalgična glazba 50-ih, 60-ih, 80-ih godina, kao i latinoglazba samo su neke večernje poslastice na Strossu.

SWEET DELIGHTS

Slatki gušti

For the twelve days that the festival lasts, visitors will be able to enjoy excellent cakes, ice cream, cookies, pancakes and other delicious specialties such as natural juices, cocktails, wines and champagne.

Tijekom dvanaest dana, koliko festival traje, posjetitelji će moći uživati u vrhunskim tortama, kolačima, sladoledima, palačinkama i ostalim slatkim delicijama, poput prirodnih sokova, koktela, vina i šampanjca.

For sure, the sweetest festival in the capital this year will once again bring together the best Croatian confectioners and sweet manufacturers. For the eighth year in a row, the Sweet Delights festival will present a gastronomic attraction on Zrinjevac.

Besides indulging in pure sugary hedonism, visitors will also have the chance to sample the best dessert at the festival, which is chosen at the annual Tortoboj competition. The festival programme is completed by educational workshops, competitions, and musical performances.

SECRETS OF GRIČ

History lovers will surely go on the fascinating city tour Secrets of Grič. Throughout the summer, visitors will be able to enjoy this tour and listen to intriguing city legends and take part in various performances connected with the history of the capital. This interactive theatrical tour is special because it takes place in the evening, and presents the city’s history in a colourful way through historical and fictional characters in costumes, guaranteeing a completely new experience of familiar Zagreb locations.

The whole tour is based on historical facts, well-known city legends and stories taken from the novels of Marija Jurić Zagorka. Dressed in a black cloak, the guide awaits visitors before setting off on an unforgettable tour of Zagreb. Visitors also actively participate in various enactments of events from Zagreb’s past. Participants on this unusual summer evening walk around Grič will have the chance to enjoy themselves for a full seventy minutes.

Zasigurno najslađi festival u metropoli i ove će godine okupiti najbolje hrvatske slastičare i proizvođače slatkih poizvoda. Festival „Slatki gušti“ već osmu godinu zaredom postaje gastronomsko središte na Zrinjevcu.

Osim čistog šećernog hedonizma, posjetitelji će imati priliku degustirati i najbolju slasticu festivala, izabranu na već tradicionalnom Troboju. Program će upotpuniti edukativne radionice, natjecanja i glazba.

Tajne Griča

Ljubitelji povijesti sigurno će posjetiti zanimljivu gradsku šetnju „Tajne Griča“. Naime, tijekom cijelog ljeta posjetitelji mogu uživati u ovoj šetnji i čuti poznate gradske legende, sudjelovati u različitim igranim događajima iz povijesti glavnoga grada. Ova interaktivna kazališna gradska šetnja posebna je zbog toga što se održava navečer i u njoj nastupaju kostimirani vodiči u ulozi povijesnih i fikcionalnih likova, koji na slikovit način predstavljaju gradsku povijest i jamče potpuno novi doživljaj poznatih zagrebačkih lokacija.

Cjelokupna šetnja temelji se na povijesnim činjenicama, poznatim gradskim legendama i pričama preuzetim iz romana Marije Jurić Zagorke. Odjeven u crni plašt, vodič dočekuje posjetitelje, čime započinje nezaboravno razgledavanje Zagreba. Posjetitelji aktivno sudjeluju u različitim igranim događajima iz zagrebačke povijesti. Sudionici u ovoj neobičnoj šetnji po Griču imaju priliku uživati čak sedamdesetak minuta tijekom ljetne večeri.

The popularity of this event is shown by the fact that for years it has been attracting well-known firework manufacturers from Poland, Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, China, Finland, Estonia, Czech Republic, Russia, Lithuania, Rumania, the Philippines, and many other countries. This year, three teams will present their skills in spectacular ten-minute displays featuring large numbers of fireworks.

Koliko je događaj popularan, dokazuje podatak da već godinama privlači renomirane svjetske izvođače vatrometa iz Poljske, Austrije, Italije, Slovačke, Mađarske, Njemačke, Kine, Finske, Estonije, Češke, Rusije, Litve, Rumunjske, s Filipina i iz brojnih drugih zemalja. I ove godine tri ekipe predstavit će svoje umijeće spektakularnim 10-minutnim vatrometima za koje će koristiti nebrojene projektile.

To really make it an occasion to remember, the organisers every year make sure that the festival includes a top-quality entertainment programme, and there will be performances by leading Croatian musicians, as well as a fun park and stands to entertain the youngest visitors.

Kako bi festival bio uistinu događaj za pamćenje, organizatori se svake godine pobrinu da ga prati i vrhunska zabava te se očekuju koncerti poznatih hrvatskih glazbenika, lunapark i štandovi koji posebice vesele najmlađe.

A festival that on the last weekend in June brings together people of all generations will once again light up the skies above Zagreb. This international firework festival has been bringing the best and most imaginative pyrotechnicians to Bundek for 19 years.

Festival koji posljednjeg vikenda u lipnju privlači sve uzraste i ove će godine zapaliti nebo iznad Zagreba. Međunarodni festival vatrometa već 19. godinu zaredom na Bundeku okuplja najbolje i najmaštovitije pirotehničare.

COURTYARDS

In July, the buildings of the Upper Town open their courtyards to visitors. These courtyards are cultural and tourist attractions located behind the facades of the Upper Town’s buildings. For the last five years, during the hot summer Zagreb evenings, people have been able to enjoy the atmosphere of Zagreb’s mysterious courtyards.

The courtyards that will be opening their doors are those of the Škrlec-Balbi building, the Gvozdanović building, the Erdödy-Drašković building, the private courtyard of the Milovac family, the private courtyard at 54 Radićeva Street, the noble dormitory at Tituš Brezovački High School, and the courtyard of the Ehrlich-Marić villa.

For ten days, you can enjoy top-class music and excellent food and drink at these locations, and all this surrounded by historical buildings and greenery. This combination of history and good fun makes Courtyards an unmissable event on a visit to Zagreb this summer.

LITTLE PICNIC

What makes this event so special is its unique approach to tasting and enjoying food. At this picnic event, there are no pre-prepared picnic baskets or the usual catering stalls. The focus is on learning about and trying locally and naturally produced Croatian products and a more individual approach, as everyone chooses and prepares their food according to their own taste. As a result, the emphasis is on pure enjoyment and discovering new tastes. The aim is also to present small, local producers. It is no surprise that this is one of the more creative gastro events, as in this wonderful location you can enjoy tasty snacks like delicatessen cheeses, seasonal fruit and vegetables, strudels, pies and numerous other specialties, as well as delicious local wines and juices.

Događaj uistinu posebnim čini osobni pristup, kad je riječ o degustaciji i uživanju u hrani. Na pikniku nema unaprijed složenih košara, kao ni uobičajenih ugostiteljskih kućica. Fokus je na istraživanju i kušanju autohtonih i prirodno uzgojenih hrvatskih proizvoda i osobnom pristupu jer svatko sam bira i slaže zalogaje po svojem izboru. Time se naglašava važnost uživanja i otkrivanja novih okusa. Nadalje, cilj je predstaviti male lokalne proizvođače. Stoga ne iznenađuje da je ovo jedan od kreativnijih gastrodogađaja jer na prekrasnoj lokaciji možete uživati u finim zalogajima kao što su delikatesni sirevi, sezonsko voće i povrće, štrukli, pite i brojni drugi te nezaobilaznim domaćim vinima i sokovima.

The fact that the Upper Town really is the cult centre of Zagreb summer evenings is also shown by August’s Little Picnic event. This charming picnic takes place in Vranicanijeva Field, and the old town atmosphere and unusual culinary approach are just a couple of reasons why you should give it a visit.

O tome da je Gornji grad zaista kultno središte tijekom zagrebačkih ljetnih večeri svjedoči i događaj u kolovozu pod nazivom „Mali piknik“. Ovaj šarmantni piknik smjestio se na Vranyczanyjevoj poljani, a starogradski ambijent i potpuno neuobičajeni gastronomski pristup samo su neki od razloga za posjet.

Gornjogradska dvorišta

U srpnju palače Gornjega grada otvaraju svoja dvorišta posjetiteljima. Dvorišta su kulturna i turistička atrakcija smještena iza pročelja gornjogradskih kuća i palača. Petu godinu zaredom tijekom vrućih zagrebačkih večeri možete uživati u atmosferi tajanstvenih zagrebačkih dvorišta.

Svoja vrata otvaraju dvorišta palače Škrlec-Balbi, palače Gvozdanović i palače Erdödy-Drašković, privatno dvorište obitelji Milovac, privatno dvorište u Radićevoj 54, dvorište plemićkoga konvikta u gimnaziji Tituša Brezovačkog i dvorište vile Ehrlich-Marić.

Na ovim lokacijama punih deset dana možete uživati u vrhunskoj glazbi, mirisima vrhunske hrane i pića, okruženi povijesnim građevinama i vrtnim zelenilom. Zbog spoja povijesti i dobre zabave gornjogradska su dvorišta ljeti nezaobilazna odredišta prilikom posjeta Zagrebu.

We spoke to the successful businessman about his taking over the management of Varteks, the STEM revolution that he’s leading, and about the state of the nation S uspješnim poduzetnikom razgovarali smo o njegovom menadžerskom ulasku u Varteks, STEM revoluciji koju vodi te o stanju u zemlji Successful businessman, STEM revolution leader and stock exchange guru are just some of the epithets connected with the name Nenad Bakić. Just how highly thought of Bakić is in his field is shown by the fact that the Financial Times included him in its list of 100 people, organisations and companies that are defining the future of Europe, and Google recently supported his Croatian Makers project to transform libraries throughout the region into digital development centres to the tune of 250 thousand dollars. Thanks to his unconventional investments and successful efforts to boost education, the moves of this entrepreneur are closely followed.

However, his new venture into the world of fashion was most definitely an unexpected one. With a capital injection worth 20 million kuna into the Varaždin fashion company Varteks, which was followed up with a loan, Bakić has embarked upon an ambitious mission to save the firm and revitalise this wellknown Croatian fashion brand.

Uspješni poduzetnik, predvodnik STEM revolucije i burzovni čarobnjak samo su neki od epiteta koji se vežu uz ime Nenada Bakića. Da je Bakić zaista cijenjen u svojem poslu, dokazuje podatak da ga je Financial Times uvrstio na popis 100 ljudi, organizacija i kompanija koji određuju budućnost Europe, a njegov projekt Croatian Makers Google je nedavno podržao sa 250.000 dolara, kako bi knjižnice diljem regije pretvorio u digitalne razvojne centre. Zahvaljujući njegovim neuobičajenim ulagačkim pothvatima i uspješnom zalaganju za napredak obrazovanja, potezi ovog poduzetnika budno se prate.

No, zasigurno neočekivan njegov je novi ulog u svijet mode. Naime, dokapitalizacijom varaždinske modne kuće Varteks, vrijednom 20 milijuna kuna, i kasnijim kreditiranjem, Bakić se odlučio na ambicioznu misiju spašavanja firme i oživljavanja poznatog hrvatskog modnog brenda.

Zašto baš Varteks i potpuno drugi svijet biznisa?

Why Varteks and a completely different business world?

Varteks is just one of my investments. I’ve put money into a variety of companies and fields. However, the situation at Varteks proved to be much more difficult than it had been when we started our investment, which is why I agreed to temporarily take over the management of the company, which I believe will save it.

How long do you think it will take the company to recover?

I think that in a year’s time we’ll clearly be able to show that we’re on the right track and become a far less risky company for our investors and creditors, an excellent employer to our workforce, and something of value to the local community. Varteks has three lines of business. The first is sewing for other companies, which means Hugo Boss, J Lindeberg, Zadig et Voltaire, and others. The second business is military clothing and uniforms, and various items of work and corporate clothing, while the third is our own brands and retail.

This third business is the key to the survival of Varteks, and has in fact been very badly managed and neglected, from retail, general sales channels, and marketing to brand management. However, we’ve taken huge strides and have significantly improved our suits, introducing exclusive lines, which we call Limited lines, in which we use the best materials in production. We’ve also raised sewing in terms of the made-to-measure segment to a serious business level. Given that they are made to measure and have bespoke elements, our suits are very acceptable in terms of price, and represent the top of our range.

In addition, we have stocked our stores with other brands, which I previously mentioned as being part of the first line of business of Varteks. For the moment, the primary aim of our marketing is to reposition the brand, which I consider to be the key to the success of Varteks. This is also borne out by the success of our webshop, which was only modernised half a year ago and which has already achieved fantastic results. The transformation of the brand through digital media is a large part of our marketing strategy. Once we have successfully carried out this strategy, we’ll focus on improving the look of our stores.

You’ve appointed Tina Vrdoljak Ranilović as creative director. She was behind the well-known and successful I-GLE brand, but that brand was something completely different from what Varteks makes.

I consider Tina to be a very level-headed and well-grounded person. She’s a great professional, and given that Varteks hasn’t had a creative director for a long time, I believe that she can achieved the desired positioning of the brand for us. First of all, Varteks needs to become an equal player on the fashion market, and Tina will be a great help in tak14 | E S P LA NA DE V IEW

Varteks je samo jedna od mojih investicija, a poslovno sam inače ulagao u razne tvrtke i branše. No, situacija u Varteksu pokazala se puno težom, nego što je bila prilikom ulaska u investiciju, pa sam pristao biti interni menadžer, odnosno privremeni menadžer koji će, vjerujem, spasiti kompaniju.

Koliko mislite da će vam trebati vremena za oporavak te kompanije?

Mislim da za godinu dana možemo jasno pokazati da smo na pravom putu i zapravo postati manje rizična kompanija za naše investitore i kreditore, odličan poslodavac za radnike, ali i vrijednost za lokalnu zajednicu. Varteks ima tri biznisa; jedan je šivanje za druge, konkretno za brendove Hugo Boss, J. Lindeberg, Zadig & Voltaire i druge. Drugi biznis su vojna odjeća i uniforme te razna radna i korporativna odjeća, a treći biznis je isključivo naš, odnosno naši vlastiti brendovi i maloprodaja.

Taj treći je zapravo glavni dio koji je nužan za opstanak Varteksa, a upravo je on bio jako loše vođen i zanemaren – od maloprodaje, načina prodaje uopće, preko marketinga do upravljanja brendom.

Stoga smo morali napraviti velik iskorak. Naime, odijela smo značajno unaprijedili i uveli ekskluzivne limited linije u kojima u proizvodnji koristimo najbolje svjetske materijale. Nadalje, šivanje po mjeri doveli smo na ozbiljniju poslovnu razinu jer iako su made-to-measure, zapravo imaju elemente Beskope odijela, ali je njihova cijena vrlo prihvatljiva Ona su vrh naše ponude.

Osim toga, dućane smo opskrbili s više robe drugih brendova koje sam naveo kao dio prvog biznisa Varteksa. Za sada nam je primarni cilj marketinški repozicionirati brend, što smatram da je ključ uspjeha Varteksa. To potvrđuje i naš uspjeh na web-shopu koji je moderniziran tek prije pola godine i već bilježi fantastične rezultate. Transformacija brenda kroz digitalne medije velik je dio naše marketinške strategije. Nakon što je uspješno provedemo, orijentirat ćemo se na unapređenje izgleda dućana.

Za kreativnu direktoricu imenovali ste Tinu Vrdoljak Ranilović koja stoji iza poznatog i uspješnog brenda I-gle. No, taj je brend bio nešto potpuno drugačije od onoga što radi Varteks.

Smatram da je Tina vrlo razumna i prizemljena osoba. Smatram je velikim profesionalcem, a budući da Varteks dugo nije imao kreativnog direktora, upravo bi Tina mogla dovesti do željenog pozicioniranja brenda. Varteks prije svega treba postati ravnopravan igrač na modnom tržištu, a Tina će nam biti velika pomoć u uvođenju firme u modnu zonu u kojoj želimo biti. To bi trebalo rezultirati i kreiranjem više odjeće naših dizajnera.

Kao temeljni cilj u godini dana navodite repozicioniranje Varteksa kao brenda. Gdje vidite Varteks za pet ili deset godina?

Trenutačno nemamo dugoročne poslovne planove.

Fokusirani smo na to da postanemo ozbiljna modna kuća i radimo zaista velike pomake u tom smislu.

As a basic aim, you cite the repositioning of Varteks as a brand over the next year, but where do you see the company in five or ten years’ time?

At the moment, we don’t have any long-term business plans. We are focused on becoming a serious fashion house, and we’re making really great strides in this direction. We have an area we want to reach, which at the moment is completely uncontroversial, and where we want our aesthetic to be located.

Once we achieve that, we’ll have a better insight into what the following steps for further improvement and development should be.

Are you prepared for failure?

The possibility of failure always exists, but I believe that there is great potential for Varteks to regain its old lustre and become part of the fast fashion trend.

Besides Varteks, the STEM revolution is surely your biggest venture, and at the same time involves playing a major role in education. How did you come up with the idea?

We have a charitable foundation which is largely family financed. Via Croatian Makers, which is a project of the Institute for the Development and Innovation of Young People, we have developed the biggest STEM education programme in Europe, involving more than 120 thousand children in Croatia. In the last 3-4 years, I was exclusively focused

Jeste li spremni i na neuspjeh?

Uvijek postoji mogućnost za neuspjeh, no smatram da Varteks ima veliki potencijal vratiti stari sjaj i postati dio trenda brze mode.

Osim Varteksa, STEM revolucija zasigurno je vaš najveći pothvat, a ujedno i veliki ulog u obrazovanje. Kako ste došli na tu ideju?

Mi imamo dobrotvornu organizaciju koju najvećim dijelom financiramo obiteljski. Putem Croatian Makersa, projekta udruge Instituta za razvoj i inovativnost mladih (IRIM), razvili smo najveći STEM edukacijski program u Europi, uključivši više od 120.000 djece u Hrvatskoj. U posljednje tri-četiri godine bavio sam se isključivo time, posvećen sam dobrotvornom radu kroz tu našu udrugu, a prije toga sam bio investitor i poduzetnik u firmama kao što su Selectio i Electus.

Naša prvotna namjera bila je donirati informatičku opremu, opremu za digitalno stvaralaštvo, programiranje i robotiku. No, onda smo pokrenuli niz velikih originalnih projekata kao što je Croatian Makers robotička liga, koja je danas najveća takva liga u EU. Osim toga, radimo na projektima kao što je uvođenje programiranja na osnovi mikrobita te ProMikro u koji se uključilo i Ministarstvo znanosti i obrazovanja RH. Time smo među prvima u svijetu pokrenuli ovakav tip revolucije, što je zaista velika stvar.

on this, dedicated to charitable work through our foundation, and before that I was an investor and entrepreneur in firms like Selectio and Electus. Our primary intention was to donate IT equipment, and equipment for digital production, programming and robotics. However, we then started with a number of large-scale original projects like the Croatian Makers robot league, which today is the largest league of its kind in the EU. In addition, we are working on projects such as introducing microbial programming and the ProMikro project, which also involves the ministry. In this way, we are among the first in the world to start this kind of revolution, which is truly a big thing.

As a graduate of the Faculty of Science, your transition from science to business is certainly one of your most interesting moves. How do you see the relationship between science and business in Croatia in comparison with other countries in Europe?

Why have you decided to stay in Croatia and not go somewhere abroad?

Inertia is a very powerful thing. My last project in the sphere of education is for me a fundamental game changer in Croatian education, and also society.

In addition, we are working on transforming 170 libraries in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo into digital development centres, which globally is a really relevant project. Although for the moment I’m in Croatia because of various projects, I’m open to going abroad once I’ve competed them.

You frequently criticise the situation in the country.

Have you ever experienced any kind of attack because of criticism directed at events and the state of affairs in Croatia?

No. I’m someone who has done a lot of positive things through my actions. We have provided a better future for a large number of children. That’s a very positive thing. When you do something positive, you can also say what’s negative. We’ve become one of the most backward countries in Europe, which is wrong. I’m in a situation in which I can change things in society, which is what I’m doing, but criticism is necessary to get things moving. If you want to improve the school system, you’re allowed to criticise it. However, as you know, I don’t stop at criticism. I use this criticism as a starting point to try and see what we can do and in which direction we can go.

You are often a guest at the Hotel Esplanade.

What attracts you most to this place?

I often come to the Esplanade for coffee. For instance, I come here with Denis Kuljiš sometimes.

The Esplanade is a really pleasant place to socialise, drink coffee and eat something nice. It’s unpretentious but at the same time has a certain luxury about it. It’s simply a great place to go. I always recommend the Esplanade to anyone who comes to Zagreb and wishes to experience the city in an authentic way.

Diplomirani ste PMF-ovac, a prelazak iz znanosti u poduzetništvo zasigurno je jedan od najzanimljivijih vaših pothvata. Kako gledate na odnos znanosti i poduzetništva u Hrvatskoj, u usporedbi s ostalim zemljama u Europi? Kako to da ste odlučili ostati u Hrvatskoj, a ne otići u inozemstvo?

Inercija je vrlo jaka stvar. Posljednji projekt u području obrazovanja, po mojem mišljenju, fundamentalni je game changer u hrvatskoj edukaciji, čak i u društvu. Osim toga, radimo na pretvaranju 170 knjižnica u Hrvatskoj, Srbiji, Bosni i Hercegovini i na Kosovu u digitalne razvojne centre, što je globalno uistinu relevantan projekt. Iako za sada ostajem u Hrvatskoj zbog navedenih projekata, otvoren sam odlazak nakon što ih završim.

Nerijetko oštro kritizirate stanje u zemji. Jeste li ikada doživjeli napad zbog kritika upućenih događanjima i stanju u Hrvatskoj?

Ne. Naime, ja sam osoba koja svojim djelovanjem čini jako puno pozitivnih stvari. Mi smo omogućili bolju budućnost velikom broju djece. To je vrlo pozitivno. Kad napravite nešto pozitivno, možete izgovoriti i ono što je negativno. Mi smo postali jedna od najnazadnijih zemalja Europe, što nije u redu. U situaciji sam da mogu mijenjati stvari u društvu i to činim, ali su kritike nužne da bi se stvari pokrenule.

Ako želite unaprijediti školstvo, smijete ga kritizirati.

Ali kao što znate, ja ne stajem na kritici. Od kritike krećem i pokušavam vidjeti što možemo napraviti i kamo možemo doći. Česti ste gost hotela Esplanade. Što vas najviše privlači ovome mjestu?

U Esplanadu vrlo često dolazim na kavu, recimo s Denisom Kuljišem se tu ponekad sastanem. Esplanada je jako ugodno mjesto za druženje, ispijanje kave i fino jelo. Nepretenciozna, a opet građanski luksuzna. Općenito, Esplanada je sjajno mjesto za boravak. Uvijek preporučujem Esplanadu svima koji dolaze i žele na autentičan način doživjeti Zagreb.

The European Hotel Awards 2019 were held at the Grand Hotel Kempinski next to Lake Geneva in Switzerland. First I Fell in Love with the Piano and After That with Classical Music Najprije sam zavolio klavir, a tek poslije klasičnu glazbu Just how proud Croatia is of its world-famous piano virtuoso and how long people had been waiting for his return can be seen in the fact that the Lisinski Concert Hall was sold out for his performances on both 30 and 31 March Da se Hrvatska ponosi svojim pijanističkim virtuozom svjetske slave i nada njegovom ponovnom dolasku, svjedočio je prepun „Lisinski“ dva dana zaredom, 30. i 31. ožujka Maksim Mrvica, born in 1975 in Šibenik, played his first concert with an orchestra before his twelfth birthday.

As a talented child, he completed primary and secondary musical school and then embarked upon improving himself further. After graduating with excellent grades from the Academy of Music in Zagreb, the same year Mrvica enrolled on a one-year course to develop his skills at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied under Professor László Baranyay, and continued refining his art in 2000 at the Alexander Scriabin Conservatory in Paris.

Maksim Mrvica, rođen 1975. godine u Šibeniku, već je s nepunih dvanaest godina svirao svoj prvi koncert s orkestrom. Kao talentirani dječak završio je osnovno i srednje glazbeno obrazovanje i nakon toga nastavio svoj put prema daljnjem napretku. Diplomiravši s odličnim uspjehom na Muzičkoj akademiji u Zagrebu, Mrvica je iste godine upisao jednogodišnji studij usavršavanja na Konzervatoriju „Franz Liszt“ u Budimpešti, u klasi prof. Lászla Baranyaya, a od 2000. godine nastavlja se usavršavati na Konzervatoriju „Alexander Skrjabin“ u Parizu.

Thanks to his exceptional talent, musical education and hard work, Maksim met producer Mel Bush and in 2003 recorded his most successful crossover album “The Piano Player”. The album’s success can be seen in the numerous international awards that it has received, such as going gold in Malaysia, China and Indonesia, and platinum in Croatia, Taiwan and Singapore, as well as the fact that it spent 12 weeks at number one in the HMV International Pop Chart on TV in China. However, this was just the start of things for this fantastic Croatian musician. Over the years, Mrvica has released eleven successful albums, each of which is special in its own way with various crossover compositions and interpretations.

This virtuoso has gained great popularity and respect throughout much of Asia, but in the last few years he has also performed to full concert halls in Europe. He’s played two years in a row in the Czech Republic and Ukraine, and in 2017 he performed for the first time in Germany and Sweden.

However, despite his tremendous success and international fame, this modest native of Šibenik is unable to hide his excitement and joy at being back in his homeland and reveals some interesting details about his new album, performances, early days and success so far.

After three years, you found yourself on stage again at the Lisinski Concert Hall, and people in Zagreb wanted to see you perform so much that the concert on 30 March sold out so quickly that another concert had to be scheduled for the following day. How did it feel to perform once more in front of an audience in Zagreb?

I was really excited to be playing at Lisinski, as I hadn’t performed there for three years. I was particularly pleased to finally be able to present my new album New Silk Road, which I’ve already performed many times abroad, to audiences in Zagreb.

Is it more challenging to perform in front of a foreign or local audience, and when do you feel the most nerves?

Naturally, it’s harder for me to perform in front of my own audience.

Zahvaljujući iznimnom talentu, glazbenom obrazovanju i velikoj upornosti, Maksim upoznaje producenta Mela Busha i 2003. godine snima svoj najuspješniji croossover album „The Piano Player“. O tome koliko je album uspješan svjedoče brojna svjetska priznanja, poput zlatne ploče u Maleziji, Kini i Indoneziji, platinaste ploče u Hrvatskoj, Tajvanu i Singapuru te punih 12 tjedana na prvome mjestu HMV International Pop Charta, televizijskog programa u Kini. No, to je samo početak uspjeha ovog hrvatskog ponosa.

Mrvica s godinama objavljuje još čak jedanaest uspješnih albuma, svaki poseban na svoj način s različitim crossover kompozicijama i obradama. Veliku popularnost i poštovanje taj je virtuoz stekao u velikom dijelu Azije, a u posljednjih nekoliko godina dobiva priznanja i puni dvorane i u Europi.

Dvije godine zaredom nastupio je u Češkoj i Ukrajini, a 2017. prvi put u Njemačkoj i Švedskoj.

Ipak, unatoč velikim uspjesima i svjetskim priznanjima, skromni Šibenčanin u razgovoru ne skriva uzbuđenje i radost jer se nalazi u rodnoj zemlji i otkriva zanimljive detalje vezane uz novi album, nastupe, svoje početke i dosadašnje uspjehe.

Nakon tri godine ponovno ste se našli na pozornici u „Lisinskom“, a zagrebačka je publika bila toliko željna vašeg nastupa, da je nakon brzo rasprodanih karata 30. ožujka, zakazan koncert i dan kasnije. Kakav je bio osjećaj ponovno nastupati za zagrebačku publiku?

Bio sam jako sam uzbuđen zbog koncerta u „Lisinskom“ jer nisam tri godine nastupao tamo. Osobito me radovalo to što imam novi album „New Silk Road“ koji sam već puno puta predstavio stranoj publici i sad sam ga napokon mogao predstaviti i zagrebačkoj publici.

Je li zahtjevnije nastupati pred inozemnom ili domaćom publikom? Kada imate veću tremu?

Svakako mi je teže nastupati pred domaćom publikom. Smatram da su obostrana očekivanja veća.

My success is the result of a number of factors that have come together.

Of course, talent is very important, as are effort and hard work, but also luck. I’ve had a lot of luck in my career, and I’ve met the right people, particularly my manager Mel Bush, who later developed my career.

I believe that the expectations are greater on both sides. The audience is made up of my own people who have followed me since childhood and so there is naturally more of a thrill.

When performing your new album New Silk Road, you sold out prestigious concert halls in Beijing, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul and many other cities. What is it that makes this album stand out, and in what ways is it different from your previous ones?

I’ve been playing crossover for fifteen years now, and all my crossover albums are different from each other, but above all I’m a classical musician and with this album I’ve turned a bit more towards the classics. The sound of the album is more classical than what I’ve done so far and it was recorded with just the piano and the Budapest Orchestra.

The 2012 Spring Gala Show at which you performed went into the Guinness Book of Records as the most watched TV show in the world. The British newspaper The Sunday Times wrote about you in 2006. In Japan and China, you have performed in the largest classical music concert halls. These are just

Već sam petnaestak godina u crossoveru i svi moji crossover albumi međusobno se razlikuju, no ja sam prije svega klasični glazbenik i ovaj put sam se malo više okrenuo klasici. Zvuk albuma dosta je klasičniji nego do sada, a snimljen je samo s klavirom i Budimpeštanskim orkestrom.

Godine 2012. Spring Gala Show, na kojem ste nastupali, ušao je u Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda kao TV-show s najbrojnijom publikom na svijetu. O vama je 2006. godine pisao britanski list The Sunday Times. U Japanu i Kini nastupali ste u najvećim dvoranama klasične glazbe – a to su samo neke „crtice“ iz vašeg profesionalnog života. My success is the result of a number of factors that have come together. Of course, talent is very important, as are effort and hard work, but also luck. I’ve had a lot of luck in my career, and I’ve met the right people, particularly my manager Mel Bush, who later developed my career.

Your compositions are known around the world, but in Asia you enjoy tremendous popularity. How do you explain this?

The promotion of my debut album began on the Asian market and it very quickly enjoyed great success. Today, I have a lot of fans in Asia, especially in China, which is my biggest market.

How do you prepare for concerts and how do you deal with stress?

Moj uspjeh je rezultat mnogo stvari koje su se poklopile, naravno da je talent vrlo bitan, puno truda i rada i upornosti, ali i sreća. Jako je puno elemenata sreće bilo u mojoj karijeri, među kojima i to što sam upoznao prave ljude, prije svega svojeg menadžera Mela Busha koji je kasnije i razvio moju karijeru.

Vaše su skladbe svjetski poznate, no u Aziji uživate iznimno veliku popularnost. Kako to objašnjavate?

Promocija mojeg prvog albuma započela je s azijskim tržištem i vrlo je brzo doživjela veliki uspjeh. Danas imam jako puno fanova u Aziji, osobito u Kini koja je moje najveće tržište.

Kakav je vaš režim pripreme uoči nastupa i kako se rješavate stresa?

Taj cijeli dan prije nastupa nastojim se što više odmarati. Ne treniram, odmaram ruke, jedem laganu hranu i meditiram, što svakako najviše pridonosi rješavanju stresa.

The whole day before I perform, I try and get as much rest as possible. I don’t practise, I rest my hands, I eat something light and meditate, which in particular helps me deal with stress.

How do you wind down after a performance?

Često navodite kako ste veliki putoholičar i ne možete biti dugo na jednome mjestu. Koje biste destinacije voljeli posjetiti, a još niste?

More than anything else, I just like to sit in peace and treat myself to some champagne and a cigarette.

You’ve often described yourself as a travel addict and said that you can’t stay in one place for too long. Which places would you like to go to that you haven’t already visited?

I have an agreement with a friend that we’ll visit all seven wonders of the world together. So far, we’ve seen four of them and I think that the next one will be Petra in Jordan, which really interests me.

You saw a piano for the first time at a friend’s in 1984. Did you have a love for classical music before that and what were you thinking about at that moment?

I didn’t have any love for classical music. No one in my family or any of my friends listened to it, so I didn’t come into contact with it. First I fell in love with the piano and after that with classical music.

I’m sure that the road to success was not an easy one, but you never gave up. What motivated you at the most difficult times and what advice would you give to talented musicians who find themselves in the same situation as you were once in?

I was motivated by a love of classical music and the idea of performing and being an active concert pianist. My road to success was a tough one, but persistence is important. I would therefore advise young musicians that when they feel that are losing hope and desire that they nevertheless be persistent. In the end, it pays off; the goal is a phenomenal one and all the sacrifice for it is worthwhile.

Prije svega, volim sjesti i u miru se nagraditi šampanjcem i cigaretom.

S prijateljicom imam dogovor da ćemo zajedno pogledati svih sedam svjetskih čuda. Dosad smo ih vidjeli četiri i mislim da je sljedeće Petra u Jordanu.

To me jako interesira.

Klavir ste prvi put ugledali kod prijatelja 1984. godine. Jeste li već prije toga gajili ljubav prema klasičnoj glazbi i što ste u tome trenutku pomislili?

Nisam gajio ljubav prema klasičnoj glazbi, nitko je od moje obitelji ili prijatelja nije slušao, pa nisam ni imao kontakt s klasičnom glazbom. Najprije se rodila ljubav prema instrumentu, a tek onda prema klasičnoj glazbi.

Put do uspjeha, vjerujem, nije bio lak, no niste odustali. Što vas je motiviralo u najtežim trenucima i što biste poručili talentiranim glazbenicima koji se nalaze u istoj poziciji u kojoj ste vi bili nekad?

Motivirala me ta ljubav prema klasičnoj glazbi i prema ideji koncertiranja: biti aktivni koncertni pijanist. Izuzetno je težak bio moj put, ali upornost je dosta bitna. Mladim glazbenicima savjetovao bih da onda kad najviše gube nadu i volju, ipak budu uporni. Na kraju se to sve isplati, cilj je fenomenalan i isplati se žrtvovati za njega.

Postojnska jama – gdje živi zmajeva mladunčad A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors, which has already reached 38 million in 200 years.

Fantastična isprepletenost rovova, galerija i dvorana, šarolikost krških fenomena koja oduzima dah te njezina pristupačnost osnovni su razlozi iznimne popularnosti i posjećenosti Postojnske jame koja je u 200 godina ugostila već 38 milijuna posjetitelja.

Postojna Cave is the heart of the picturesque Slovene Karst. It was discovered in all its grandeur in 1818 by Luka Čeč, one of the locals – before his discovery only a very small part of it had been known. A proper underground kingdom revealed itself in front of his eyes, and the cave system of more than 24 kilometres in length with the most wonderful cave formations thus got its first admirer. He called out enthusiastically to his companions waiting outside: »Here is a new world, here is paradise!« Postojna Cave is today famous for being one of the most diverse karst caves in the world.

Nowhere else is it possible to admire so many different subterranean karst wonders in a single cave system.

Nowhere else but here, have visitors for 140 years been able to take a ride with a special cave train which takes you around under magnificent underground arches, through an amazing landscape dotted with playful limestone sculptures.

Postojnska jama poznata je kao jedna od najraznovrsnijih krških špilja na svijetu. Naime, nigdje drugdje nije moguće u jednom samom špiljskom sustavu uživati u toliko velikom broju podzemnih krških čuda. Samo tu, u Postojnskoj jami, već više od 140 godina posjetitelji mogu krenuti u vožnju posebnim vlakićem ispod veličanstvenih podzemnih lukova kroz fantastičan krajolik posijan razigranim skulpturama od vapnenca.

Postojna Cave is the cradle of a special branch of biology – speleobiology. This new science was born in the year 1831, when the Slendernecked Beetle (Leptodirus hochenwartii) was discovered in the Postojna Cave by Luka Čeč, a local of Postojna. Not long after, explorers discovered and recorded tens of new animal species adapted to the conditions inside the cave to such an extent that they are unable to survive outside of it. The most known among them is Proteus (also known as the olm). This pale and highly unusual creature can grow up to 30 centimetres in length, it is completely blind, lives in the subterranean world, even up to incredible 100 years. The olm has always excited people’s imagination. People used to believe that olms were the dragons’ offspring. Since the beginning of last year, we have been witnessing a special event taking place in Postojna Cave, one of our olms laid eggs, from which wenty one baby dragons have hatched so far. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them!

To blijedo i doista neobično biće, koje može narasti do 30 cm, potpuno je slijepo, živi u podzemnom svijetu i može doživjeti nevjerojatnih 100 godina. Čovječje su ribice oduvijek golicale ljudsku maštu. Prema narodnoj predaji riječ je o zmajevim mladuncima. Back in 1987, Zagreb became richer with the addition of a new special venue: Le Bistro restaurant. At the time, it was the first restaurant of its kind in the former state where guests were offered French charm, a wide-ranging gastronomic offer, and a number of novelties that the inhabitants of Zagreb had not encountered before.

Above all, guests were delighted with the restaurant’s atmosphere, which was very airy because of the glass roof. Le Bistro was the first dining establishment in Croatia to have such a roof. Its bright interiors, complemented with pictures with French motifs, simultaneously give off an idea of elegance and the warmth of home. Regardless of the time of year, guests have the opportunity to enjoy the romantic glass garden, while on warmer days they can sit back in the shade of the terrace and enjoy the view of what’s going on the city.

Here, for the first time, wine and champagne were served by the glass, and coffee served with miniature chocolates. It was also at Le Bistro that the tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day started.

Here, for the first time, wine and champagne were served by the glass, and coffee served with miniature chocolates. It was also at Le Bistro that the tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day started. Previously, it had been completely unknown in Yugoslavia. It was here in this restaurant that the well-known Italian dessert tiramisu was served for the first time in Croatia, and where guests could see waitresses in silk uniforms. The opening of Le Bistro established new standards in the industry, and many Zagreb restaurants that opened afterwards followed suit.

Ovdje su se prvi put vino i šampanjac posluživali u čašama, a uz kavu se servirala čokoladica. Upravo je iz Le Bistroa krenula tradicija slavljenja Valentinova koje je do tada u Jugoslaviji bilo potpuna nepoznanica. U ovom se restoranu prvi put u Hrvatskoj poslužila poznata talijanska slastica tiramisu, a gosti su ovdje prvi put vidjeli hostese u svilenim uniformama. Zaista, otvaranjem Le Bistroa postavili su se neki novi standardi u ugostiteljstvu, a mnogi zagrebački restorani otvoreni kasnije ugledali su se upravo na njega.

Today, Le Bistro is still synonymous with quality and accessibility, and continues to dictate trends. For instance, Le Bistro, together with Zinfandel’s, was the first restaurant to have menus that could be accessed by using an iPad. It’s a second home for a number of Zagreb’s inhabitants, a venue for business meetings, and a location for informal gatherings. For some, it has such a place in their hearts that they come back every day, if only to greet the restaurant staff with whom they have established a friendly relationship.

I danas je Le Bistro sinonim za kvalitetu i pristupačnost. Iz ovog se lokala nastavljaju diktirati trendovi, pa su, primjerice, Le Bistro i Zinfandel’s prvi imali jelovnike dostupne na iPadu. Drugi je ovo dom brojnim Zagrepčanima, mjesto poslovnih susreta i neformalnih druženja. Nekima je toliko prirastao srcu, da svakodnevno svrate u restoran makar samo pozdraviti osoblje s kojim su već izgradili prijateljski odnos.

Ensuring that everything remains tip-top in the eyes of guests is the responsibility of the restaurant manager Ivan Trbušić and his staff.

Although he intended to practise law, 43-year-old Ivan Trbušić’s life has taken him in a completely different direction. When he was at secondary school, he started working in catering and loved the profession so much that the Faculty of Law was simply forgotten about.

Ivan has practically built his entire career in the Hotel Esplanade. He started working here back in 1994 as a waiter, which allowed him to master the skills of the profession as well as the special relationship with guests that the Esplanade cultivates.

Before his current position as manager of Le Bistro, Ivan worked as the supervisor in Zinfandel’s restaurant. After some time, during the summer vacation period, he came to assist in Le Bistro, where he stayed on to work once more as a supervisor, eventually becoming manager of the restaurant. His daily work involves responsibility for the restaurant, staff and inventory.

In addition, he is also responsible for the training of young colleagues who have just joined the team, and to whom it is vital to transfer all his acquired knowledge and high standards when it comes to interacting with guests. “Being manager of the restaurant, and being a member of the hotel staff in general, is a great honour and involves a lot of responsibility. Just the fact that the Esplanade is the best hotel in Croatia fills me with a great sense of pride that I belong to this community, but it also brings an additional level of responsibility, as I have to make sure that everything runs smoothly and is exactly as it should be”, explains Trbušić.

There are seven other member of staff in his team. They are: Tomislav Klišanin, Dorijan Šneler, Zlatko Batistić, Ivona Zega, Matija Capan, Anamarija Deljak and Domagoj Dragija. “I’ve been working with these colleagues for a few years now, and I can say that it’s been a great pleasure for me to be surrounded by such quality people who understand the job. Iako se planirao baviti pravom, 43-godišnjeg Ivana Trbušića život je odveo u sasvim drugom smjeru. Još za vrijeme srednjoškolskih dana počeo je raditi u ugostiteljstvu i taj je posao toliko zavolio, da je Pravni fakultet pao u zaborav.

U hotelu Esplanade Ivan gradi cijelu svoju karijeru.

Ovdje je započeo raditi još 1994. godine kao konobar i na tome je mjestu svladao sve vještine ove profesije, kao i poseban odnos prema gostu, koji Esplanada nudi.

Prije nego što je došao na sadašnje radno mjesto voditelja Le Bistroa, Ivan je radio i kao supervizor u restoranu Zinfandel’su. Nakon nekog vremena, tijekom sezone godišnjih odmora dolazi kao ispomoć u Le Bistro u kojem i ostaje najprije na poziciji supervizora, a zatim i kao voditelj restorana. Njegov svakodnevni rad podrazumijeva cjelokupnu brigu o restoranu, osoblju i inventaru. Osim toga, zadužen je i za edukaciju mladih kolega koji se tek priključuju u tim i kojima je važno prenijeti stečeno znanje te visoki standard ophođenja s gostima. „Biti voditelj restorana i općenito zaposlenik ovog hotela podrazumijeva veliku čast, ali i odgovornost. Činjenica da je Esplanada najbolji hotel u Hrvatskoj stvara mi još veći osjećaj ponosa zbog pripadanja ovoj zajednici, ali donosi i dodatnu razinu odgovornosti jer sam zadužen za to da sve bude besprijekorno, baš onako kako treba biti“, objasnio je Trbušić.

U njegovom timu radi još sedmero zaposlenika: Tomislav Klišanin, Dorijan Šneler, Zlatko Batistić, Ivona Zega, Matija Capan, Anamarija Deljak i Domagoj Dragija. „S ovim kolegama radim već nekoliko godina i to mi je veliko zadovoljstvo jer oko sebe imam kvalitetne ljude koji razumiju posao. Prije svega, svi smo svjesni da radimo u jednoj instituciji u kojoj se postavljaju standardi ugostiteljstva i u skladu s tim gradimo jedan neponovljivi odnos s klijentima.

For the staff who work at Le Bistro, but also in the hotel in general, the Esplanade is a second home. Something connects them all: a strong emotional tie that stems from the individual relationships that are formed with the hotel and other colleagues. In the same way, many guests are emotionally connected to this restaurant and the hotel itself. Ivan recalls an occasion at the start of his career when a frequent guest one evening sat behind the piano that used to be in Le Bistro and started playing and singing. Before long, the whole restaurant and staff had happily joined in. In addition, there are guests who often pop in to greet staff because they were simply passing by, which is another indicator, says Ivan, of the excellent job his team does and how guests recognise and appreciate the excellent service.

Ubrzo mu se u tom veselju pridružio cijeli restoran i njegovo osoblje. Postoje i gosti koji često navrate pozdraviti djelatnike Le Bistroa jer, eto, bilo im je usput, što je još jedan znak, kako kaže Ivan, da se posao radi izuzetno dobro i da gosti znaju prepoznati i cijeniti vrhunsku uslugu.

In the heart of Istria, there is the smallest town in the world. Hum is just one hour’s drive from Umag, and because of its size and rich history it is a must-see place for all those staying in the vicinity. Given that these days it has just under twenty inhabitants, the town has entered the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest in the world.

U srcu Istre smjestio se najmanji gradić na svijetu. Udaljen samo jedan sat vožnje od Umaga, Hum je zbog svoje veličine i bogate povijesti neizostavna postaja svima koji se odmaraju u blizini. Budući da danas ima malo manje od dvadeset stanovnika, ovaj grad ušao je u Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda kao najmanji na svijetu.

Although Hum is small, it has conquered the hearts of tourists, and because of its size most of those visiting it make comparisons with the fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

According to legend, Hum was the last settlement to appear in the River Mirna Valley, and so the giants built the smallest town in the world here because there was not enough stone left. However, the town has a much bigger story than this legend, and that is its long history.

Hum was built in the early Middle Ages, in the 11th century to be precise, which is testified to by remains from the period. The Glagolitic Alley, a trail of outdoor monuments extending from Roč to Hum, has roots that go back even further. At the entrance to Hum, there is the Monument to Resistance and Freedom, and on the double town gates there are twelve medallions with scenes from rural life. It is therefore no surprise to learn that the town was built by the Illyrian Histri tribe as a safe haven from robbers.

Prema legendi, Hum je nastao kao zadnje od svih mjesta u dolini rijeke Mirne, pa su divovi izgradili najmanji grad na svijetu jer je za izgradnju ostalo malo kamena.

Ipak, grad ima puno veću priču od jedne legende, a to je njegova duga povijest.

Naime, Hum je izgrađen još u ranom srednjem vijeku, točnije u 11. stoljeću, o čemu svjedoče ostaci iz toga doba. Još starije korijene ima Aleja glagoljaša, put spomenika koji se proteže od Roča do Huma. Na ulasku u Hum nalazi se spomenik otporu i slobodi, a na dvokrilnim gradskim vratima nalazi se dvanaest simbola s prizorima iz seoskog života. Stoga ne iznenađuje podatak da je grad izgradilo ilirsko pleme Histri upravo kao utočište od pljačkaša.

From the 12th to the 15th century, there was a flowering of artistic creativity in Hum. During the rule of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the Chapel of St. Jerome was built.

Today, this is a must-see tourist attraction with exceptional preserved frescos. The chapel inspires wonder in all those who visit it, and the scene of the Assumption on the triumphal arch and the fragment of the martyrdom of St. Lawrence on the lower part of the northern wall are particularly worth seeing.

The next major phase of building in Hum took place in the 17th century.

Under Venetian rule, the small town became a cultural and economic centre while still maintaining its defensive function.

Apart from having a rich cultural heritage, in 2005 Hum was declared the town of biska. Biska is a local rakija or brandy made from fermented grapes, mistletoe and four types of medicinal herb. The recipe is at least two thousand years old and was used in the druid magic of the ancient Celts who once inhabited this area and for whom mistletoe had special sig-

Sljedeći veliki procvat u izgradnji Hum doživljava u 17. stoljeću. Za vrijeme vlasti Venecije gradić se pretvara u kulturno i gospodarsko središte, zadržavajući naglašenu obrambenu funkciju.

Osim što ima bogatu povijesnu ostavštinu, Hum je 2005. godine proglašen gradom biske. Biska je domaća rakija koja se spravlja od komovice, bijele imele i četiri vrste ljekovitih trava. Recept je star čak dvije tisuće godina i dio je drevne druidske magije starih Kelta koji su nekada živjeli na ovim prostorima, a bijela imela bila je njihova kultna biljka. nificance. Rakija is believed to be a natural remedy for atherosclerosis and to help in regulating blood pressure. Aphrodisiacal qualities are also attributed to it. The recipe was revived thanks to the efforts of parish priest Josip Vidal, a skilful herbalist who is responsible for the preservation of Hum biska.

If you love Istrian cuisine, Humska konoba (the Hum Tavern), which is built out of Istrian stone and wood, represents a fantastic gastronomic opportunity on any visit to the town.

The tavern was opened back in 1976, and certain dishes are served on a wooden platter, which gives them authenticity.

MALALAN Seven Decades of Watchmaking Excellence Sedam desetljeća urarske izvrsnosti When, in 1930s Trieste, Anton Malalan learned the trade of the watchmaker, he primarily wanted to gain the knowledge about his profession. He was to live through some turbulent years of war and when the situation finally calmed down, he and his wife emptied the barn in his home town of Opicina and made it into a workshop for repairing watches. The repairs of various timepieces started the writing of a chapter of watchmaking excellence which is the first in the seventy-year-long tradition of the Malalan family.

FIRST DECADES The barn which instead of a cow housed a small workshop was soon no longer sufficient for the increasing demand, therefore in the 1950s the couple moved to nearby street. In addition to better service, the new facility enabled them to start selling jewellery and mechanical timepieces, which soon became an important part of their trade. The increasing need for quality maintenance of mechanical timepieces was one of the reasons why their oldest son discovered his interest in the watchmaking trade. Soon, the Malalan workshop became the official maintenance shop for various Swiss manufacturers of mechanical timepieces. When the first battery-driven movements were introduced, the company included the maintenance of these into their operation and while the wheels of the Swiss watchmaking industry almost stopped, the interest for the quality maintenance of mechanical timepieces, surprisingly, remained the same. The story of Anton and Angelca started gaining the dimensions of a family company.

EXPANSION TO LJUBLJANA The 1990s were marked by the Malalan family with the opening of a small shop in Ljubljana, which served as a display win-

Kad se tridesetih godina prošlog stoljeća odlučio školovati za urara u Trstu, Anton Malalan prije svega je želio steći znanje o svojoj struci. Pred njim je bilo nekoliko turbulentnih ratnih godina, a kad se stanje konačno smirilo, u svom je rodnom gradu Opicini zajedno sa suprugom raščistio staju i preuredio je u urarsku radionicu. Popravkom različitih satova započeo je ispisivati poglavlje o urarskoj izvrsnosti, prvo u sedamdeset godina dugoj tradiciji obitelji Malalan.

PRVA DESETLJEĆA Staja, u kojoj se umjesto goveda nalazila mala radionica, uskoro više nije bila dovoljna za sve veću potražnju, pa se par pedesetih godina prošlog stoljeća preselio u obližnju ulicu. Osim pružanja bolje usluge novi prostori omogućili su im da počnu prodavati nakit i mehaničke satove, koji su uskoro postali važna sastavnica njihova obrta. Sve veća potreba za kvalitetnim održavanjem mehaničkih satova bila je jedan od razloga zbog kojih se njihov najstariji sin Darko počeo zanimati za urarstvo.Ubrzo, radionica Malalan postala je službeni servisni centar za različite švicarske proizvođače mehaničkih satova. Nakon pojave prvih mehanizama na bateriju, tvrtka je u svoju djelatnost uvrstila i njihovo održavanje i, dok su se proizvodni pogoni u švicarskim urarskim kućama gotovo zaustavili, interes za kvalitetnim održavanjem mehaničkih satova ostao je, protivno očekivanju, isti. Obrt Antona i Angelce počeo je tako poprimati razmjere obiteljskog poduzeća. ŠIRENJE U LJUBLJANU Devedesete godine prošlog stoljeća obitelj Malalan obilježila je otvaranjem male trgovine u Ljubljani, koja je djelovala kao izlog one u Opicini. A few years later, the first watchmaker was employed in Ljubljana and the workshop was located in independent premises in the centre of the capital. Since they added brands of higher price range to their business portfolio, the workshop in Ljubljana also started acquiring the title of the official service store for renowned watchmaking names.

NEW STEP IN THE WATCHMAKING WORKSHOP The turn of the millennium turned out to be extremely important since the story of the Malalan family was joined by the leading name in Swiss watchmaking, Rolex. One of the conditions for this partnership was the acquisition of appropriately equipped premises for the repair office and at least one excellently trained watchmaker. Draguljarna Malalan moved to the present location in Ljubljana and vastly expanded its premises.

EXPANSION TO ZAGREB AND NEW BRANDS The small watchmaking workshop in Ljubljana developed into one of the best equipped watchmaking laboratories in Europe, where four highly trained watchmakers are in charge of mechanical timepieces today, and they are joined by the workshop in Zagreb, where quality services are provided by Jure Malalan, the certified repairman for Rolex timepieces. The watchmaking team is proud to announce that today they are the official service centre for Rolex, Tudor, Bvlgari, Breitling, Audemars Piguet, Zenith, Chanel, Tag Heuer, and Maurice Lacroix.

THE CENTENARY OF NEVA

At the beginning of December, the Magdis Group’s acquisition of the Neva company was presented to invited guests in the Emerald Ballroom. This was the occasion for an exhibition of Neva’s impressive portfolio and to celebrate the centenary of the company and the 25th anniversary of the Magdis company. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the cosmetics brand Hommage à la Beautè – Neva 1918, an exclusive body care product line. The Esplanade’s confectioners created a series of desserts shaped like cosmetics especially for the occasion.

In November, Nenad Sovilj, Croatian’s most well-known jewellery designer, presented his new Monument collection in the Emerald Ballroom. The thirteenth annual collection also marked the thirteenth year of the creator’s work, and besides epoxy resin jewellery also included haute joaillerie pieces of gold and semi-precious and precious stone.

GLAMOROUS CELEBRATION OF THE TOURIST SEASON

Zagreb will remember 2018 as its most successful year ever for tourism. Besides achieving the best tourism results in the history of the city, in October 2018 on Croatian Tourism Day, Zagreb also won the Destination of the Year Award.

WINE TOURISM AWARDS

The GET (Gastronomy, Oenology, Tourism) Association organised the seventh Bunch of White Grapes award ceremony at The Club at the Hotel Esplanade, where awards were presented for wine tourism and the development and promotion of wine culture. The Bunch of White Grapes Regional Trophy was won by the best Croatian wineries of 2018: Meneghetti from Istria, Vuglec Breg from Zagorje, and Korta Katarina from Pelješac.

HOSTING THE OLDEST INTERNATIONAL CULINARY ASSOCIATION

In the Istanbul Suite of the Hotel Esplanade, a ceremony was held to mark Croatian members joining the oldest culinary association in the world, Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

These included General Manager Ivica Max Krizmanić and Chef Ana Grgić. This culinary fraternity brings together gastronomes with the aim of developing cookery, the culinary arts, dining culture and also hospitality. It therefore comes as no surprise to learn that today Chaîne des Rôtisseurs has more than 25,000 members in 80 countries. Chef Ana Grgić produced a menu with traditional Croatian cuisine for the evening that provided a true gastronomical delight, and guests enjoyed the programme led by food expert and publicist Radovan Marčić and the new conseiller gastronomique de Croatie.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION

With Spanish flamenco, wine, specialties and a friendly atmosphere, the Embassy of Spain marked the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Spanish Constitution at an official reception in the Emerald Ballroom.

The event brought together a number of figures from Croatian politics, culture, sport and society. In his speech, the Ambassador of Spain, Alonso Dezcallar, emphasised the excellent relations between Croatia and Spain.

Organised by Zagreb Tourist Board and the Croatian National Tourist Board, a conference on heath tourism in Croatia was held in the Emerald Ballroom which was attended by about 200 participants and experts in the fields of medicine, wellness and tourism, who discussed areas of development for Croatia and Zagreb as a health tourism destination.

90 YEARS OF THE ROTARY CLUB IN CROATIA

The main event in the 90th anniversary celebrations of Rotary International in Croatia was held in the Emerald Ballroom under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia. The event gathered many important members of the Croatian Rotary District 1913, as well as high-ranking Rotary members from neighbouring countries, once more confirming that Rotary International is a global organisation that brings together people dedicated to humanitarian aims and values, and the promotion of high ethical standards in business and private life.

In a packed Emerald Ballroom, the Official Sunflower Rural Tourism Awards concluded the sixth campaign of the Klub Članova Selo Croatian Association for Tourism and Rural Development to find the best performers in this tourism segment. These national awards at which two Golden Sunflowers were awarded, out of a total of some fifty awards in seven categories, provided further proof of the beauty and wealth of the Croatian countryside.

In a specially laid-out Emerald Ballroom, Zagrebačka banka announced the 11 winners of the 2018 My Zaba Start competition in the following three categories: Business, Culture and Science, and Society. More than 700 guests enjoyed the young malvazija wine and great atmosphere at one of the most attractive Croatian wine events – the annual En Primeur wine futures in the Emerald Ballroom. Together with Istrian Jelenić prosciutto and Latus cheeses, this year visitors were also joined by a number of žlahtina producers and around twenty winemakers from the Croatian highlands. This terrific event, which was organised for the first time back in 2012, this year attracted the largest number of winemakers so far, but also wine lovers, who had the chance to enjoy malvazija wines from all over Istria.

The Cakes of My Granny Vilma Kolači omame Vilme

At the end of last year, in the holiday atmosphere of the Hotel Esplanade, accompanied by a few delicious desserts, the promotion of Maroje Mihovilović’s book “The Cakes of My Granny Vilma” took place. The fact that this is not just another typical cookery book is shown by the interesting story and successful collaboration behind its birth. While researching the history of his family, who have been scattered across the world and who he has written about in his book We Children of Solferino, Mihovilović came across a very old and interesting note-

In order to successfully adapt these sweets from the time of our grannies and grandpas, Mihovilović decided to enter into collaboration with the confectionary team at the Hotel Esplanade, headed by Chef Ana Grgić, who did patiently and successfully reconstruct and bring back to life the 35 recipes and desserts of Granny Vilma. Thanks to this successful collaboration, the spirit of a particular time, refined culture, and culinary and confectionary tradition to which we also belong has been revived.

In December, general manager Ivica Max Krizmanić and the management of the Hotel Esplanade hosted a traditional Christmas lunch for leading media figures, which was also an opportunity for Chef Ana Grgić to present her new collection of specialties. Ana once again showed journalists her skill, innovativeness and virtuosity by preparing exceptional dishes and launching her most creative menu to date. The innovative concepts, creative expression, playfulness with ingredients, dash of artistry on the plate, and emphasis on original flavours delighted the members of the media, who, together with representatives of the hotel, drank to the holiday season with quality wine and champagne.

Već je petu godinu zaredom restoran Zinfandel’s, u suradnji s Veleposlanstvom Francuske u Zagrebu i Francuskim institutom, sudjelovao u globalnoj inicijativi Good France i tako na najfiniji način obilježio prvi dan proljeća. Više od stotinu uzvanika imalo je priliku okusiti najbolje iz francuske kuhinje u kreativnoj izvedbi šefice Ane Grgić i njezinog tima.

Ova jedinstvena gurmanska inicijativa slavi francusko kulinarsko umijeće, radost dijeljenja i uživanja u vrhunskim namirnicama, a obilježava se na isti dan u cijelome svijetu. Gosti Zinfandel’sa započeli su svečanu večeru uz ružičaste mjehuriće Moët & Chandon Roséa, a veličanstvena selekcija otmjenih provansalskih sljedova popraćena je romantičnim francuskim šansonama, dok je L’Occitane kozmetika svakome gostu darovala posebni dar.

From Ancient Rome to NAI 3.3 Od antičkog Rima do NAI 3.3

Being a part of the Mediterranean, Croatia has a long tradition of olive growing and production of olive oil. Since Ancient Rome, there are records of excellent olive oil from Liburnia (oleum liburnicum).

At the time of Emperor Tiberius (reigned from 14 to 37 AD), Marcus Gavius ​​Apicius, a Roman writer, gourmet and lover of luxury revealed in the oldest Roman cookbook “De Re coqvinaria” (“The Art of Cooking”) how to adulterate other oils, that is, how to make the aroma of other olive oils more resembling that of the Liburnia oil.

That is the region where the island of Dugi otok is located. Since the aforementioned Rome, through the Venetian Republic and its famous Law on Forcible Planting setting out the number of trees a man has to plant as a condition for marrying, the island has been covered with olive trees.

Since 1607, adorned with a multitude of stories, customs and experiences of the past generations of the small village of Žman, we now produce, in a contemporary manner, extra virgin olive oil NAI 3.3 with eco certification that is, besides laboratories in Croatia, also controlled by the Swiss SQTS. Its superior quality is also confirmed at prestigious competitions, such as Milan Monocultivari Olive Oil Expo and Olive Japan, where we won a total of 13 medals (Best of the World, Gold and Silver).

Each drop of Nai 3.3 oil is the result of manual work, made of olives that are manually picked and processed the same day. The olives are separated from the stalk, and each fruit that is damaged or shows any trace of external impact is removed in the processing. Only the perfect olives, healthy and intact, processed on the same day create the unique taste of Nai 3.3 oil.

Hrvatska kao dio Mediterana ima dugačku tradiciju uzgoja maslina i proizvodnju maslinovog ulja. Još od antičkog Rima postoje zapisi o izvrsnom maslinovom ulju koje je stizalo iz Liburnije (oleum liburnicum).

Pa tako Marcus Gavius Apicius, rimski pisac, gurman i ljubitelj luksuza, iz vremena cara Tiberija (vladao od 14.-37.g). u najstarijoj rimskoj kuharici „De Re coqvinaria“ („Umjetnost kuhanja“) otkriva kako patvoriti druga ulja, odnosno kako aromu maslinovog ulja približiti onoj liburnskoj.

U tom okruženju smjestio se i Dugi otok.

Od već spomenutog Rima preko Mletačke Republike i njenog poznatog Zakona o prisilnoj sadnji koji govori o broju stabala koji momak mora posaditi da bi se mogao oženiti, otok se prekrio maslinama.

Od 1607. godine zaogrnuti mnoštvom priča, običaja i doživljaja prošlih generacija malog seoca Žmana danas na suvremen način proizvodimo ekstradjevičansko ulje NAI 3.3 s ekocertifikatom koje osim laboratorija u RH kontrolira i švicarski SQTS. Njegovu vrhunsku kvalitetu potvrđuju i nagrade na prestižnim natjecanjima, milanskom Monocultivari Olive Oil Expo i Olive Japan, na kojima smo osvojili ukupno 13 medalja (the best of the word, zlatnih i srebrnih).

Svaka kap ulja Nai 3.3 rezultat je ručnog rada, a svi plodovi koji ga čine rukom su ubrani i prerađeni u istom danu. Masline se odvajaju od peteljke, a svaki plod koji je oštećen ili odaje bilo kakve tragove vanjskog utjecaja odstranjuje se u procesu prerade.

Canadian couple David and Erin Heilman decided to have the wedding that they had always dreamed about in the Hotel Esplanade Vjenčanje o kakvom su oduvijek maštali kanadski par Erin Nicole i David Josip Heilman odlučili su održati baš u hotelu Esplanade 34-year-old Erin Nicole Heilman, finance director at Capital Lendin Centre, and 36-year-old David Josip Heilman, owner of the Studio Cycle Group motorcycle salon in Toronto, began their story in spring 2016 when they were introduced to each other by a mutual friend who took Erin to a gathering on David’s boat. They continued to see each other afterwards, and at Christmas 2017 they got engaged.

After that, the adventure of planning their wedding began. “At the end of the year, we travelled to Croatia to see in the new year with family and friends. We also started looking for a venue for our wedding reception. This is when we visited the Hotel Esplanade and immediately knew that it was the best choice for our wedding”, explained the newly-weds.

Direktorica financija u tvrtki Capital Lendin Centre, 34-godišnja Erin Nicole Heilman i 36-godišnji David Josip Heilman, vlasnik motosalona Studio Cyvle Group u Torontu, svoju su priču započeli u proljeće 2016., kad ih je upoznao zajednički prijatelj koji je poveo Erin na druženje na Davidov brod. Od tog su se dana nastavili viđati, a na Božić 2017. su se zaručili.

Tada započinje njihova avantura planiranja vjenčanja. „Prije Nove godine otputovali smo u Hrvatsku, kako bismo 2018. dočekali s obitelji i prijateljima.

Usput smo krenuli u traženje naše svadbene lokacije.

Posjetili smo i hotel Esplanade i odmah znali da je najbolji izbor za naše vjenčanje”, objasnili su mladenci Heilman.

They decided to have their wedding in Zagreb because Croatia held many happy memories for them.

David’s father was born in Zagreb, and his mother has roots in the Karlovac area. He spent his summers here as a child, while Erin also loved Croatia a lot, as she had visited it several times before the wedding.

In addition, they had already heard how this hotel is the perfect place for a wedding. “Our dear friends Pavla and Davor Rogić had shown us some beautiful pictures from their reception at the Esplanade.

They recounted the evening so enthusiastically and said how everything had been absolutely perfect.

When we came to Zagreb for New Year, Pavla took us to the Esplanade to meet our future wedding coordinator, Monika Pustaj”, explained Erin.

After Monika had taken them round the hotel and shown them photographs of previous events and sample menus, the couple knew that the Esplanade was the best choice for them. “Of course, we had a look at other potential venues, but once we had experienced this hotel for ourselves, nothing could compare with the level of elegance and quality of service that is guaranteed here.”

Even though practically the entire wedding was planned from Canada, preparations went a lot more smoothly than they had anticipated. At first, they were worried about whether they would be able to plan everything that they wanted when they were thousands of kilometres away. However, they put their complete trust in the hotel staff. The coordinator, Monika, played an important role in organising everything, helping them choose suitable menus, drinks, decorations and lighting.

Erin and David got married on 1 September in the Church of St. Blaise. For her special day, Erin chose a beautiful wedding dress from a Zagreb salon, and her bridesmaids wore long fuchsia dresses. David, on the other hand, selected a suit from one of the best salons in Toronto, whose owner was also a good friend of his, and at his wedding wore a tailored tuxedo while his best man wore a suit.

After the ceremony, the newly-weds and guests headed for the hotel. The concierge had organised a bus for guests to take them from the hotel to the church and then back again after the ceremony.

Before the reception, a welcome drink on the Oleander Terrace had been prepared for everyone. This consisted of champagne, gin cocktails and canapés. The guests loved the Hotel Esplanade. Many of them actually stayed in it and later told the newlyweds how they had been pleasantly surprised by the interiors and how approachable the hotel staff were. “They were impressed by the rich history and 1920s ambience. They particularly liked the story of the Orient Express. During their stay, they enjoyed breakfast and lunch at Zinfandel’s, and the Oleander terrace was a popular location for sipping cocktails”, explained the Heilmans.

Vjenčanje su odlučili održati baš u Zagrebu jer ih, kako kažu, za Hrvatsku vežu vrlo lijepe uspomene.

Naime, Davidov je otac rođeni Zagrepčanin, a majka podrijetlom iz okolice Karlovca. David je ovdje kao dijete provodio ljeta, a i Erin je jako zavoljela Hrvatsku jer ju je prije svadbe nekoliko puta posjetila.

Osim toga, već su prije čuli kako je hotel Esplanade savršeno mjesto za vjenčanje. „Naši dragi prijatelji Pavla i Davor Rogić pokazali su nam prekrasne fotografije s njihove svadbe u Esplanadi. S oduševljenjem su se prisjećali te večeri i isticali kako je sve bilo i više nego savršeno. Kad smo za Novu stigli u Zagreb, Pavla nas je povela u Esplanadu na upoznavanje s našom koordinatoricom vjenčanja Monikom Pustaj”, ispričala nam je Erin.

Nakon što ih je Monika provela kroz hotel i pokazala portfolio fotografija s prošlih događanja te primjere jelovnika, bračni par Heilman znao je da je Esplanada najbolji izbor za njih. „Naravno, bili smo i na drugim potencijalnim lokacijama, ali jednom kad smo uspjeli doživjeti ovaj hotel uživo, više se ništa nije moglo usporediti s razinom elegancije i kvalitetom usluge koja je ovdje ponuđena.”

Iako su gotovo cijelo vjenčanje planirali iz Kanade, priprema je tekla mnogo lakše nego što su očekivali.

U početku su, kažu, bili vrlo zabrinuti hoće li uspjeti isplanirati sve što su htjeli s udaljenosti od nekoliko tisuća kilometara. No, potpuno povjerenje dali su osoblju hotela. Veliku ulogu u organizaciji odigrala je upravo koordinatorica Monika koja im je bila velika pomoć u odabiru prikladnih jelovnika, pića, dekoracije i rasvjete.

Erin i David vjenčali su se 1. rujna u crkvi sv. Blaža. Za svoj poseban dan Erin je odabrala prekrasnu vjenčanicu u jednom zagrebačkom salonu, a njezine djeveruše nosile su dugu haljinu u boji fuksije. David je pak svoje odijelo odabrao u jednom od najboljih salona za odijela u Torontu, čiji je vlasnik njegov dobar prijatelj. Tako je David na svojem vjenčanju nosio smoking šivan po mjeri, a njegov kum odijelo.

Nakon vjenčanja gosti i mladenci zaputili su se prema hotelu. Concierge je čak organizirao autobus kojim su se gosti vozili iz hotela do crkve i nakon ceremonije vjenčanja natrag u hotel.

Prije početka svadbene svečanosti, na terasi Oleander za sve je goste posluženo piće dobrodošlice: šampanjac i kokteli od džina te kanapei. Gostima se jako svidio hotel Esplanade. Mnogi su u njemu i odsjeli te kasnije ispričali mladencima kako su ugodno iznenađeni interijerom te pristupačnošću hotelskih zaposlenika. „Oduševila ih je bogata povijest i ambijent iz 1920-ih godina. Posebno im se svidjela priča o Orient Expressu. Za vrijeme svojeg boravka uživali su u doručku i ručku u Zinfandel’su, a Oleander terasa bila je popularan izbor za ispijanje koktela“, objasnili su Heilmanovi.

elegant and cheerful. “As soon as we entered the ballroom, we were entranced. It all felt a little unreal, as if we were in a fairy tale. The tables were beautifully laid, and the silver candelabra on each table, which had been suggested to us by Monika, completed the whole experience.” The guests also loved the Emerald Ballroom, especially the silver details on the serviettes and printed menus.

Besides the wide choice of food throughout the evening, Erin and David, but also their guests, were particularly delighted by the three-layered cake. The newly-weds had decided upon two cakes: a triple chocolate mousse cake and another one that was a combination of white chocolate and blackberries. The band New York were responsible for creating the right atmosphere on the dance floor, and managed to satisfy the musical tastes of both the Croatian and Canadian guests. “The band created a brilliant atmosphere on the dance floor. In particular, our little niece and bridesmaid Nicole loved them and did not miss a single set. When the band sat down for a break, Nicole went up to them and begged them to come back and play because she wanted to dance. The band members immediately rose from their table and fulfilled our little niece’s wishes. She danced alone on the dance floor while the rest of us caught our breath and had something to eat”, the Heilmans laughingly recall. People flooded onto the dance floor at about one o’clock, which was all down to DJ Adam Kulbakas (Logic of 100 | E S P LAN A DE V IEW

a srebrni svijećnjaci na svakom stolu, koje nam je preporučila Monika, upotpunili su cijeli doživljaj.“ I gostima se svidjela Smaragdna dvorana, posebice srebrni detalji na salvetama i ispisani jelovnici.

Uz bogat izbor jela tijekom večeri, Erin, David i njihovi uzvanici bili su posebno oduševljeni tortom na tri kata. Mladenci su se odlučili za dvije torte – jednu od trija čokoladnog moussea, a drugu u kombinaciji bijele čokolade i kupina. Za atmosferu na plesnom podiju bio je zadužen New York band koji je zadovoljio glazbeni ukus i hrvatskih i kanadskih gostiju. „Bend je napravio odličnu plesnu atmosferu. Posebice se svidio našoj maloj nećakinji i djeveruši Nicole koja nije propustila niti jedan njihov set. Kad bi sjeli na pauzu, Nicole bi ih zamolila da se vrate svirati jer se njoj pleše. Članovi benda odmah su ustali od stola i ispunili želju našoj maloj nećakinji koja je sama plesala na podiju, dok smo mi ostali uzeli predah uz jelo“, kroza smijeh se prisjećaju Heilmanovi. Plesni je podij uzavreo oko jedan sat poslije ponoći, kad je za glazbu bio zadužen DJ Adam Kulbakas (Logic of Sound) iz Toronta. Veselje je potrajalo do šest sati ujutro, a sve divne uspomene zabilježio je fotograf Simon iz Foto Emotiona. Goste i mladence ugodno je iznenadilo hotelsko osoblje koje je cijelo vrijeme bilo nasmijano, iako je vani već bila zora. „Svi su gosti komentirali da je izbor hrane odličan, a usluga na visokoj razini s kakvom se nisu susreli niti na jednom vjenčanju dosad. Od početka do kraja Esplanada nam je pružala pet zvjezdica i za to možemo zahva-

This July Umag will become the centre of world-class tennis, spectacular exhibition matches, great fun with the best local music stars and international DJ setup and exquisite gourmet delicacies from the region of Istria. The reason for all of that is the 30th edition of the Plava Laguna Croatia Open that will be held in Umag from 12th to 21st of July.

First star that confirmed its participation in this year’s event is Borna Ćorić. The 22-year-old Croatian’s bond with the Umag tournament goes back to 2013 when he was only 16 and had his ATP Tour main draw debut.

Mečevi iz Umaga se prenose u svim ključnim zemljama za hrvatski turizam, a domaća publika već 30. godina u mečevima može uživati i putem sportskog programa HRT-a. Suradnja se na obostrano zadovoljstvo nastavlja i dalje, te je ove godine potpisan i novi višegodišnji ugovor o suradnji.

CONCERT: MICHAEL BUBLÉ 16 September 2019 - Zagreb Arena Michael Bublé, known by music critics as the “Millennial Sinatra”, will be performing at the Zagreb Arena on 16 September as part of his world tour, which started in Florida. The singer is promoting his latest studio album  (Love) in major cities throughout the year. With his sensual baritone, cavalier image and timeless love songs, Bublé will undoubtedly charm Zagreb.

Milenijski Sinatra, kako su ga prozvali glazbeni kritičari, Michael Bublé 16. rujna nastupit će u Areni Zagreb, u sklopu svoje velike svjetske turneje koja počinje na Floridi. Pjevač tijekom cijele godine u velikim gradovima promovira svoje najnovije studijsko izdanje  (“love”). Senzualnim baritonom, imidžom kavalira i bezvremenskim ljubavnim hitovima, Bublé će zasigurno šarmirati zagrebačku publiku.

EXHIBITION: THE LINE OF BEAUTY — THE TRAIL OF INSPIRATION Sep. - Oct. 2019 - The Klovićevi dvori Gallery Galerija Klovićevi dvori In September and October, to mark the centenary of the National Library’s graphic collection, visitors will have the opportunity to see this large exhibition in Klovićevi Dvori Gallery. Since 1919, the library has been collecting valuable items such as graphic maps, postcards, cartoons, posters, comic strips and bookplates, which will surely intrigue all history lovers.

U povodu stogodišnjice postojanja grafičke zbirke Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice, posjetitelji će imati priliku razgledati veliku izložbu u Klovićevim dvorima tijekom rujna i listopada. Još od davne 1919. godine Knjižnica prikuplja neizmjerno vrijedne materijale, poput grafičkih mapa, razglednica, crteža, plakata, stripova i ekslibrisa, što će zasigurno zaintrigirati ljubitelje povijesti.

BALLET: ANNONCIATION - LA STRAVAGANZA June 2019 – Croatian National Theatre The world-renowned French artist Angelin Preljocaj will be presenting two pieces of choreography at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb that will become part of its permanent repertoire. The pieces, entitled Annoniciation and La Stravaganza, deal with themes of eternity, searching and immigration, through which Preljocaj will undoubtedly spark the interest of the audience.

Angelin Preljocaj, poznati svjetski umjetnik podrijetlom iz Francuske, u Hrvatskom narodnom kazalištu predstavit će dvije koreografije koje će postati dio stalnog repertoara HNK u Zagrebu. U koreografije pod nazivima Nagovještenja i La Stravaganza utkane su teme vječnosti, potrage i imigracije, kojima će Preljocaj nesumnjivo potaknuti velik interes publike.
