This is the period of the year when we get ready for the magical moments of Christmas, when we look forward to cakes, the aroma of mulled wine, the joy of meeting up with those close to us, buying presents, indulging in culinary treats, and when in particular, like little children, we look forward to visiting the brightest Advent in Europe, the one in Zagreb. Each year, Advent in Zagreb becomes more lavish, enchanting everyone with the variety of what it has to offer, from its numerous and interesting cultural attractions, inviting culinary delights, imaginative decorations and myriad bright lights, to a unique vibe that can only be experienced here in our city. It is a fusion of old and new, a combination of the traditional and modern, and many different people having a great time in one place. In fact, it is hard to describe, so the best thing to do is to come to Zagreb, spend the night in our wonderful Esplanade and experience the magical Christmas event that everyone is talking about. This time of year makes me really happy, when all of us in the hotel will celebrate together the success of the business and the numerous prestigious awards we have received, the one that gave us particular pleasure being the one for Croatian Hotel of the Year. I am happy and proud of my team, the wonderful people who give this hotel its soul and make it unique in the world. I hope that next year will be like this one, full of interesting guests and fascinating events, and that it will abound with creative ideas, new innovative culinary delights, and happy moments.

To je ono doba godine kad se spremamo za čarobne trenutke Božića, veselimo kolačima, mirisnom kuhanom vinu, radosnim susretima s bliskim osobama, kupovini darova, prepuštanju gurmanskim užicima i kad se poput male djece posebno veselimo razgledavanju najsjajnijeg Adventa u Europi, onog u Zagrebu. Zaista, zagrebački Advent je iz godine u godinu sve raskošniji i naprosto oduševljava raznovrsnom ponudom, brojnim zanimljivim kulturnim sadržajima, primamljivim gastronomskim poslasticama, maštovitom dekoracijom, mnoštvom blještavih lampica i nekom posebnom vibrom koja se može doživjeti samo ovdje u našem gradu. Spoj je to starog s novim, kombinacija tradicionalnog s modernim i mnogo različitih ljudi dobre volje na jednome mjestu. Zapravo, teško je to opisati, najbolje je doći u Zagreb, provesti pokoju noć u našoj bajkovitoj Esplanadi i doživjeti taj čarobni božićni ugođaj o kojem svi pričaju. Veseli me, baš me jako veseli to doba godine kad ćemo svi mi u hotelu zajedno proslaviti uspješno poslovanje i brojne prestižne nagrade, od kojih nas je najviše obradovala nagrada za hrvatski hotel godine. Sretan sam i ponosan na svoju ekipu, prekrasne ljude koji ovom hotelu daju dušu, čineći ga jedinstvenim u svijetu. Nadam se da će i iduća godina biti poput ove, prepuna interesantnih gostiju i zanimljivih događanja, da će obilovati kreativnim idejama, novim inovativnim gurmanskim delicijama i sretnim trenucima. This year, there’s a new location - Advent in Maksimir, which offers great fun for the whole family in cooperation with Zagreb Zoo, and there’s also Advent on Stara Tkalča, where traditional crafts will be displayed and which brings alive the spirit of the oldest Zagreb districts of Gradec and Kaptol. Advent Film is a new feature which involves the Europa Cinema showing Christmas films for all ages, while the passage of Prolaz sestara Baković will be laid out like the set of a Christmas film.

Ove se godine predstavlja nova lokacija - Advent u Maksimiru, koja nudi osmišljenu zabavu za cijelu obitelj, u suradnji sa Zoološkim vrtom Zagreb. Novo mjesto je i Advent Stara Tkalča, na kojem će se pokazivati tradicionalni obrti i oživjeti duh najstarijih zagrebačkih naselja Gradeca i Kaptola. Novost je i Filmski advent u sklopu kojeg se u kinu Europa prikazuju božićni filmovi za sve uzraste, a Prolaz sestara Baković prigodno je uređen kao set sa snimanja božićnog filma.

certs in St. Catherine’s Church, the concert programme of the Zagreb Soloists for Advent in Zagreb, Advent in St. Blaise’s Church, Concerts from Zagreb Christmas Balconies, and Christmas with Kids. Of course, there’s also the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Croatian Music Institute and Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, all of which offer rich programmes in December, while the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and the Gallery of the Archaeological Museum will all be organising seasonal exhibitions. Other interesting events include An Invitation to Tea, where the pupils of Marija Jambrišak Students Dorm open up their courtyard and invite visitors to come in and hang out, and Advent at Vidra, where you can see the programme of Novi život (‘New Life’), the oldest drama studio for the blind and visually impaired in the world. Advent in Zagreb is the most important event in our capital. Last year saw a rise in visitor arrivals of 17% and an increase in overnight stays of 18%, which according to Zagreb Tourist Board statistics means that December 2017 witnessed 111,429 visitor arrivals and 201,734 overnight stays, compared to the 94,573 arrivals and 169,095 overnight stays in December 2016. Advent u Zagrebu najvažnije je događanje u našem glavnom gradu. Prošle godine zabilježeno je 17 posto više dolazaka i 18 posto više noćenja nego godinu ranije. The production of FREYWILLE’s “Passionate Art” jewellery is no less complex than the detailed ornamentation within its designs. Some 80 procedural steps – many of them manually executed – are required in order to manufacture each piece of jewellery.

Umjetnički FREYWILLE nakit izrađuje se jedinstvenim i iznimno složenim procesom. Posebno kompleksan je postupak ornamentiranja u kojem se svaki najsitniji detalj i motiv raskošnog dizajna dugotrajno osmišljava i vrlo precizno oslikava. Nastajanje jednog komada nakita u konačnici podrazumijeva proces s više od 80 pojedinačnih koraka od kojih je većina ručni rad.

CREATION The most important part in this production procedure is transforming the gouache sketches drafted by the FREYWILLE artists into the finished enamel without losing either the striking colour depth or the precise details in the designs.

STVARANJE SKICA Pri kreativnom stvaranju raskošnog dizajna FREYWILLE umjetnici izrađuju skice gvaš tehnikom. Najteži i najvažniji dio u procesu izrade nakita je prenošenje tih skica na pripremljeni emajl bez ijedne promjene bogatih nijansi snažnih boja i uz zadržavanje svakog preciznog detalja dizajna kao na izvornoj skici

PRECIOUS ENAMEL Originally sketched in gouache colours, only perfected designs are chosen to be created in enamel, a material composed of glass with additives. Pulverised glass (the “frit”) is ground together with minerals, porcelain balls and water in a mill until an enamel “paste” is created. This procedure must be separately performed for each enamel colour, which is produced by metal oxides enriched with quartz sand. Precisely accurate and consistent measurements are required for each colour. These formulas are closely held trade secrets and they produce a singularly luminous colour – one that never fades.

PRIPREMA NAJFINIJEG EMAJLA Od brojnih izvornih skica gvaš bojama, odabiru se samo one koje su potpuno savršena umjetnička djela te će kao takve biti prenesene u dizajn na emajlu, staklenom materijalu pomiješanom s posebnim dodacima. Smjesa staklenog praha („frit“) i minerala usitnjava se pomoću porculanskih kuglica i vode u mlinu, sve dok se ne dobije emajl „pasta“. Ova procedura izvodi se posebno za svaku boju emajla. Boju emajla proizvode metalni oksidi obogaćeni kvarcnim pijeskom u točno određenim, preciznim i ponovljivim omjerima. Formule tih mješavina su dobro čuvana poslovna tajna , jer su upravo one zaslužne za jedinstveni sjaj boja koje nikada ne blijede.


APPLICATION OF GOLD The application of the design begins with a “base coat” of 24-carat yellow- and/ or white-gold powder that is applied by hand and fused in a special procedure. Then, as with mosaic, each colour “stone” is sequentially applied.

APLIKACIJA ZLATA Aplikacija dizajna započinje tzv. „baznim slojem“ 24 kt žutog ili bijelog zlata u prahu. On se ručno nanosi i topi specijalnim postupkom. Nakon toga, baš kao što se slažu kamenčići u mozaiku, apliciraju se jedna po jedna raskošna boja.

PHASES OF COLOUR APPLICATION The nuances of the colour application depend upon the artists’ intentions: the historical source for each design – whether it is from a particular art-historical epoch or a famous painter’s masterpiece – requires specific colour definitions in order to attain artistic authenticity.

APLICIRANJE BOJA Prilikom nanošenja boja, izbor odgovarajućih nijansi određen je umjetničkim opredjeljenjem. Naime, povijesni izvor dizajna , bilo da je on određena povijesno-umjetnička epoha ili remek-djelo velikana slikarstva, nalaže vrlo specifičnu definiciju boja kojom će se postići umjetnička autentičnost.

FIRING THE ENAMEL Once all the colours are applied, the numerous layers of enamel are fused together and bonded by a firing process called the “Dekorbrand.”

PEČENJE EMAJLA Kada se nanesu sve boje, brojni slojevi na emajlu se sjedinjuju i vežu posebnim postupkom pečenja koji se zove „dekorbrand“ .

MOUNTINGS After the Dekorbrand, each individual piece is polished and finished with hand-painted enamel, and fired one last time. Finally, the completed piece of enamel – now a thin plate refracting intense colour – is mounted by hand into selected settings (24-carat gold-plated, rhodium plated or 18-carat solid gold) and then rigorously inspected for quality control. The piece of jewellery is at last ready to be worn by a patron of “Passionate Art.”

UGRADNJA Nakon pečenja, svaki pojedini komad emajla se pažljivo polira i završno precizno ručno oslikava pa ponovno još jednom peče. Konačno, gotove raskošno obojene dragocjene pločice emajla ručno se postavljaju između okvira koji mogu biti od 24kt pozlate, rodij-paladij prevlake ili 18kt čistog zlata. Poslije stroge kontrole kvalitete izradbe, gotovo malo umjetničko djelo spremno je za budućeg vlasnika, strastvenog ljubitelja kulture i umjetnosti.

If you would like to discover a mysterious side to Zagreb, take a walk along the streets of Zagreb in the company of witches of the Upper Town. Rest assured that this will not be an ordinary walk, but one full of magic and surprises. Želite li i vi otkriti mističnu stranu Zagreba, prošećite zagrebačkim ulicama u društvu – Gornjogradskih coprnica. Budite sigurni da to neće biti uobičajena šetnja, već šetnja prepuna magije i iznenađenja. Old people used to tell stories about witches roaming the streets of the Upper Town of Zagreb at night. People bumped into them, heard their conversations and some walked round Zagreb's secret places in their company. And who were these witches? They were proper witches and enchantresses who could take you back to a distant past and remove you from reality with their stories. You could find yourself in the time of Matija Gubec, Church secrets, the burning of the witches, the time when magicians were full of tricks and there were love potions around. If you wonder how you will recognise the witches, it is easy. They wear black capes and hold a lantern in their hands and their followers wear witches’ hats! This is an interactive event for tourists, a popular culture visit to important locations in the Upper Town in the company of guides dressed in costumes. You will enjoy the walk if you want to experience some magic and mystery, but also history. Every performance consists of entertainment, interactive play and education, and there are magic presents. 14 | E S P LA NA DE V IEW

Nekad su stari ljudi pričali o tome kako zagrebačkim Gornjim gradom noću lutaju coprnice. Ljudi ih susreću, čuju njihove razgovore, a postoje i oni koji u njihovom društvu posjećuju tajna mjesta Zagreba. A tko su coprnice? Coprnice su zapravo vještice i čarobnice koje će vas vratiti u daleku prošlost i autentičnim pričama odvesti izvan stvarnosti. Odlutajte u vrijeme Matije Gupca, crkvenih tajni, spaljivanja vještica, čarobnjačkih trikova i ljubavnih napitaka. Pitate se kako ćete ih prepoznati? Lako! Odjevene su u crni plašt, u ruci drže fenjer, a njihovi sljedbenici na glavi imaju vještičji šešir! Riječ je zapravo o interaktivnoj izvedbi, odnosno popularnom kulturno-turističkom razgledavanju znamenitosti Gornjega grada u društvu kostimiranih vodiča. U šetnji će uživati svi željni magije i mistike, ali i povijesti, a svaka izvedba uključuje zabavu, interakciju, edukaciju i magične darove.

DISCOVER WHERE WITCHES CONGREGATE

Visitors can walk down the streets of Tuškanac, Kaptol, Gradec and Opatovina in the company of witches. They will go up Mlinske stube (steps) and in front of the Cathedral hear about the connection that the Church had with 215 persons who were accused of witchcraft. The witches will reveal the places where they congregate, such as the famous Manduševac fountain. The tourist walk will take you to many more secret places in Zagreb and reveal everything you did not know about witches in interesting stories. Behind the Upper Town's seven witches, there are seven women who will tell the visitors stories from the Middle Ages painting a picture of the bygone times. These are excellent costume performances that will help the visitors imagine the past and they will include several stories, beliefs about witches, historical events and descriptions of real-life practice. To make the visit as interesting as possible, the witches will gladly accept your pets into their company because they are known for having little helpers such as cats and dogs. The walks in the Upper Town will begin in the evening hours when one of the witches holding a lantern will softly tell you interesting and authentic stories about a different kind of Zagreb. All the stories are based on a thorough study of history. The text for the walks was made as an interpretation of historical records and describes real-life stories of women’s lives in Zagreb's past eras. The walk is appropriate for children of all ages and they quickly and easily relate to the stories because of their strong imagination. They assimilate the knowledge of the Zagreb witches with great interest and show a very small amount of disbelief. 16 | E S P LAN A D E V IEW

Otkrijte vještičja mjesta

Posjetitelji u društvu vještica imaju priliku prošetati ulicama Tuškanca, Kaptola, Gradeca i Opatovine, uspeti se Mlinskim stubama, a ispred katedrale slušati o tome kakve je veze imala Crkva sa 215 osoba koje su u Zagrebu bile optužene za bavljenje vještičarenjem. Vještice otkrivaju i mjesto svojih okupljanja, a to je poznati Manduševac. Turistička šetnja prolazi još mnogim skrivenim ulicama Zagreba, a uza zanimljive priče otkrit će vam sve što niste znali o vješticama. Iza sedam gornjogradskih coprnica stoji sedam žena koje se trude posjetiteljima programa dočarati priče iz srednjeg vijeka i stoljeća koja slijede. Riječ je o dojmljivim kostimiranim izvedbama uz koje se posjetitelji odmah mogu uživjeti u neko drugo, davno vrijeme. Tijekom šetnje se spaja nekoliko priča, vjerovanje o vješticama, povijesni događaji i stvarna praksa. A da bi šetnja bila još zanimljivija, coprnice u svoje društvo rado primaju i vaše kućne ljubimce jer i poznate su po tome da imaju svoje male pomagače, mačke i pse. Šetnje Gornjim gradom počinju u večernjim satima, kad jedna od coprnica s fenjerom u ruci tihim glasom prenosi zanimljive i autentične priče o jednom drukčijem Zagrebu. Sve priče plod su temeljitog proučavanja povijesti. Naime, cijeli tekst nastao je kao interpretacija povijesnih spisa te prenosi stvarnu sliku o životu žena iz prošlosti Zagreba. Šetnja je prikladna za djecu svih dobi, koja se zbog jake imaginacije lako i brzo užive u priče te s velikim zanimanjem i uz malu mjeru nepovjerenja upijaju znanje zagrebačkih vještica.

Do you want to try the hat of a real witch? You’ll have an opportunity to do just that. All the witches have large hats, engage in battles that are always fierce and provide good entertainment. During the walk, you will discover many hidden Zagreb streets and you will be able to play the Wheel of Fate, a game played in the Frankopan and Zrinski castle. After you return from the distant past, you will get a small, magic present made by hand as a reminder of the evening of magic and secrets.

Ako ste željeli isprobati kako vam stoji šešir jedne vještice, imat ćete priliku i za to. Sve coprnice „naoružane“ su velikim vještičjim šeširom, čarolijama koje uvijek uspijevaju te mnoštvom dobre zabave. Tijekom šetnje otkrit ćete brojne tajne zagrebačke ulice te zavrtjeti kolo sudbine, igru koja se igrala na dvoru Frankopana i Zrinskih. A nakon što se vratite iz daleke prošlosti Zagreba, dobit ćete mali, čarobni, rukom rađeni dar kao podsjetnik na večer magije i skrivenih tajni.

On your way, you will meet other witches and noble women and witness some events that were perhaps not so pleasant. After an hour and a half and many interesting stories that include mystery and history, many people have reported that they see the Upper Town in a different light.

How Old Are We Really? Koliko smo zapravo stari?

The internationally renowned Croatian scientist talks about the most recent innovation from the laboratory of his company Genos, the GlycanAge test that reveals the biological age of the organism and so helps in preventing the development of illness. Gordan Lauc, PhD, is a full-time professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry in Zagreb, and an honorary professor at King’s College in London and at the University of Edinburgh. His main field of research is glycobiology and its application in molecular diagnostics. He is internationally recognised in this field, which is confirmed by the large number of lectures he has been invited to give and the international research consortia he is involved in. As well as being a scientist, Lauc has been an entrepreneur for 10 years, and conducts research into glycans through his company Genos. Recently, his laboratory launched the GlycanAge test onto the market, which measures a person’s biological age. Professor Lauc shared his thoughts with us on everything to do with glycans, measuring biological age and aging in general in an interview for Esplanade View.

You are an interesting figure in the Croatian scientific community. At the same time, you’re both a scientist and an entrepreneur. We know that abroad this is both normal and desirable, but here it most definitely isn’t, as scientists generally keep to their institutions and almost despise business. What was it that tempted you into business?

Zanimljiva ste i neobična pojava u hrvatskoj znanstvenoj zajednici. U isto vrijeme ste i znanstvenik i poduzetnik. Znamo da je u inozemstvu to uobičajeno i poželjno, no kod nas definitivno nije jer se znanstvenici uglavnom drže institucija i gotovo da preziru poduzetništvo. Što je Vas potaknulo da se otisnete u poduzetničke vode?

I went into business out of necessity, as I didn’t have the opportunity at the university where I work to achieve all my scientific research ambitions. The way in which the scientific community operates is that scientists propose projects, and the bodies which finance science and award grants evaluate and approve them. However, we don’t choose these projects ourselves but they are suggested to us by the institutions that we work for. Naturally, the project which is considered to be the best receives the funding. These awards are sometimes very generous and most of the applicants receive some funding, but sometimes they are very competitive and only a small number of applicants get anything. After I had started getting most of the funding for projects in my institution, I was told that I should stop because my colleagues also needed to have the opportunity to access funds for their own projects. This made me realise that if I wanted to progress further, I had to start carrying out scientific work outside the university system. That’s how Genos started and then developed into what it is today. I began conducting my scientific research projects through my private company. We started off as a small forensic laboratory where we wanted to use our knowledge to carry out genetic tests, and after the business had become established, I included my own scientific research at Genos.

U poduzetništvo sam ušao iz nužde, odnosno zbog toga što nisam imao mogućnost da na fakultetu na kojem radim ostvarim sve svoje ambicije, kad su u pitanju znanstvena istraživanja. Znanstvena zajednica funkcionira tako da znanstvenici predlažu projekte, kako bi ih tijela koja financiraju znanost i raspisuju natječaje mogla ocijeniti, odnosno odobriti. No, projekte ne predlažemo sami, već ih za nas predlažu institucije unutar kojih djelujemo. Novac, naravno, dobiva projekt za koji se procijeni da je najbolji. Nekad su natječaji velikodušni, pa većina prijavljenih dobije novac, a nekad su jako kompetitivni, pa dobije samo mali postotak prijavljenih. Nakon što sam unutar svoje institucije počeo dobivati većinu sredstava za projekte, rečeno mi je da je vrijeme da stanem jer i moji kolege trebaju doći u priliku da dobiju novac za svoje projekte. Tada sam shvatio da se, ako želim dalje napredovati, moram početi baviti znanstvenim radom i izvan fakultetskog sustava. Tako je nastao Genos, a onda i narastao do faze u kojoj je danas. Dakle, svoje sam istraživačke projekte počeo prijavljivati kroz privatnu tvrtku. Počeli smo najprije kao mali forenzički laboratorij kroz koji smo željeli iskoristiti svoje znanje, kako bismo radili genetičke testove, a nakon što se taj posao stabilizirao, uključio sam u Genos svoja znanstvena istraživanja.

In the meantime, you have left the management of the company to others and set up new firms.

U međuvremenu ste tvrtku menadžerski prepustili drugima i osnovali nove tvrtke?

In 2015, we divided Genos into: Genos DNA Laboratory, Genos Research Institute and Genos Glycoscience. In practice, this means the following: Genos DNA Laboratory does DNA tests and works with clinics, Genos Research Institute carries out research projects and discovers new biomarkers, while Genos Glycoscience commercialises biomarkers in the field of glycoscience.

Godine 2015. smo podijelili Genos na: Genos DNA laboratorij, Genos istraživački institut i Genos Glycoscience. It was believed that when can read all our genes, we will find out everything that interests us. Today, for only 400 euros, we really can read our own genomes. However, that doesn’t mean that we have uncovered all the secrets of life. Nekad se smatralo da ćemo, kad pročitamo sve gene, saznati sve što nas zanima. You are a leading European scientist in the field of glycans. Glycobiology is very popular today because of its usefulness in medicine and the development of new drugs. Can you explain the importance of the field that you work in?

Vodeći ste europski znanstvenik na području glikana, a glikobiologija je danas veoma popularna zbog korisnosti medicini kojoj omogućuje razvoj novih lijekova. Pojasnite nam važnost područja kojim se bavite!

The story of glycobiology begins when cells evolved into multicellular organisms. This means that when a level of complexity was reached in which genes and proteins were not able to directly carry out all the necessary functions, glycosylation appeared, in other words the attaching of glycans (to proteins and lipids), which then made a difference. Glycans perform slightly different functions or what is not written in our genes. In short, the information that is written in our genes defines our proteins that carry out certain functions. With the development of multicellular organisms, new functions emerged that in large part no longer depended solely on the individual genes and proteins that they encoded. The new functions also depended on a network of genes whose products add glycans to proteins through complex interactions, while glycans in turn regulate the functions of the proteins they are attached to. This complexity manifests itself in our

Glikani obavljaju malo drugačije poslove, ono što ne piše u našim genima. Ukratko: informacije koje su zapisane u našim genima definiraju naše proteine koji obavljaju određeni dio funkcija. Razvojem višestaničnih organizama pojavile su se nove funkcije koje uveliko više ne ovise samo o pojedinačnim genima i proteinima koje kodiraju, već ovise o mreži gena, čiji produkti kroz složene međusobne interakcije na proteine još dodaju glikane koji pak reguliraju funkcije proteina na kojima se nalaze. diversity. For example, the basis for the difference between various blood groups is actually glycans (and that is just one example). The fact that we are different in terms of glycans means that we are susceptible to different illnesses, but it’s also connected with different responses to medications. For a long time, people were not particularly concerned with glycans. Scientists started to work with glycans at the beginning of the last century, and then in the 1960s DNA analysis methods developed and everyone focused on DNA, which is very easy to analyse. Thus, for 50 years science was generally concerned with the analysis of DNA. During the 1980s, the Human Genome Project began and it was believed that when can read all our genes, we will find out everything that interests us. Today, for only 400 euros, we really can read our own genomes. However, that doesn’t mean that we have uncovered all the secrets of life. This is logical, because if it wasn’t so, then our whole lives would be written down at the moment of our births. We would know exactly when we were going to fall ill and when we were going to die. But it’s not like this, because our lifestyle has an impact on our future, not just our genes. Because of this, science has started to focus on other areas, one of the most interesting of which is definitely glycans. A few years ago, American National Academies of Sciences produced a strategic document that stated that glycans are of extreme importance in all illnesses, and that it is necessary to research them and work with them. Currently, there are only two large laboratories in the world that can carry out high-throughput glycan analysis in a quality manner: Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and Genos in Zagreb. As far as glycans are concerned, we should definitely mention that, just as we used to have the Human Genome Project, in October of this year the Human Glycome Project was launched. On this occasion, around 100 leading international scientists gathered together in Dubrovnik. Given that I’m one of the directors of the project, Croatia has a major role in running the Human Glycome Project, which is a big thing. Your company Genos Glycoscience recently launched the GlycanAge test onto the market. Can you briefly tell us what it is exactly? The GlycanAge test is the result of research that we carried out on more than 60,000 people. Since we had developed the analytical technology to help us study the differences between glycans (between people), we decided to cooperate with all the largest biobanks in the world, in other words with institutes that have collected data about a certain number of people and stored their biological samples. One of the first scientists to be involved in this was our own Igor Rudan. The two of us met at the beginning of 2008 in Edinburgh and agreed to include glycomics in already existing large studies. When we had a large enough sample, we began to observe which glycan explains which part of the phenotype. We came to the conclusion that certain glycans are associated with ageing. The most interesting thing in this is the fact that the biological age that we calculate with the help of glycans, or the GlycanAge test, differs from real chronological age. And this difference is connected with the biomarkers that reflect a healthy 24 | E S P LA N A DE V IEW

Ljudi se dugo nisu posebno bavili glikanima. Znanstvenici su se počeli baviti glikanima još početkom prošlog stoljeća, ali se 1960-ih godina razvila metoda analize DNA i svi su se fokusirali na DNA koju je vrlo jednostavno analizirati. Tako je prošlo 50 godina tijekom kojih se znanost uglavnom bavila analizom DNA. Tijekom 1980-ih godina započeo je Human Genome Project i tada se smatralo da ćemo, kad pročitamo sve gene, saznati sve što nas zanima. I danas zaista za samo 400 eura možemo pročitati vlastiti genom, međutim, to ne znači da smo otkrili sve tajne života. To je logično jer kad ne bi bilo tako, naš bi čitav život bio zapisan već u trenutku rođenja. Točno bismo znali kada ćemo se razboljeti, a kada ćemo umrijeti. A to nije tako jer naš životni stil također utječe na našu budućnost, a ne samo geni. Upravo zbog toga znanost se počela fokusirati na neka druga mjesta, a jedno od najzanimljivijih su glikani. Prije nekoliko godina američke nacionalne akademije donijele su strateški dokument koji kaže da su glikani izuzetno značajni za sve bolesti te ih treba istraživati i njima se baviti. Trenutačno u svijetu postoje samo dva velika laboratorija koja se mogu kvalitetno baviti analitikom glikana: Leiden University Medical Center u Nizozemskoj i Genos u Zagrebu. Kao što je nekad postojao Human Genome Project, u listopadu ove godine pokrenuli smo Human Glycome Project (Projekt ljudskog genoma). Tom prilikom smo u Dubrovniku okupili stotinjak vrhunskih svjetskih znanstvenika. S obzirom na to da sam jedan od direktora projekta, Hrvatska ima značajnu ulogu u vođenju Projekta ljudskog genoma, što je velika stvar. Vaša tvrtka Genos Glycoscience nedavno je na tržište stavila GlycanAge test. Recite nam ukratko o čemu se radi! GlycanAge test je rezultat našeg istraživanja koje je provedeno na više od 60.000 ljudi. S obzirom na to da smo razvili analitičku tehnologiju pomoću koje možemo proučavati razlike među glikanima (među ljudima), obratili smo se za suradnju svim najvećim bio-bankama u svijetu, odnosno ustanovama koje su skupile određen broj ljudi i podatke o njima, te spremili biološke uzorke u baze. Jedan od prvih znanstvenika koji se time počeo baviti je naš Igor Rudan. Nas dvojica smo se sastali početkom 2008. godine u Edinburghu i dogovorili se da glikomiku priključimo postojećim velikim studijama. I kad smo dobili tako veliki uzorak, počeli smo promatrati koji glikan objašnjava koji dio fenotipa. Zaključili smo da se određeni glikani povezuju sa starenjem. Pritom je najinteresatnija bila činjenica da se biološka dob koju izračunamo pomoću glikana odnosno GlycanAge testom razlikovala od stvarne kronološke dobi. A razlika je vezana za biomarkere koji odražavaju zdrav ili nezdrav život. Primjerice, povećan GlycanAge će imati ljudi koji imaju viši inzulin, pretili su, bolesni i sl. Dakle, razlika između biološke

or unhealthy life. For instance, people who have higher levels of insulin, or who are obese, ill and so on, will have a higher glycan age. The difference between a person’s biological age, as determined by GlycanAge, and their real chronological age depends upon how healthy the person is in general. GlycanAge will not give a specific diagnosis but will provide an insight into whether an organism is more used up than it should be or whether it’s in a better state than one would expect. Measuring what we call the glycan age, we in some way measure how pro-inflammatory our organism has become, because the older people get, although we don’t know precisely why, the more pro-inflammatory they become. What makes GlycanAge unique? We know that there are other tests that measure biological age? There are many ways that people have used to try and measure biological age. One of them is by using questionnaires and asking people if they are overweight or smoke, etc. On the basis of this, a biological age can be determined. However, if you do ten different tests, it’s possible that you’ll get ten different results. But these are not real indicators. Similarly, there are tests in which

Po čemu je GlycanAge jedinstven u svijetu? Znamo da postoji još testova koji mjere biološku dob. Postoji puno načina kako ljudi pokušavaju procijeniti biološku dob. Jedan su, primjerice, upitnici: jeste li pretili, pušite li i sl. Na temelju odgovora određuje se biološka dob. I ako odete na deset različitih testova, moguće je da dobijete deset različitih rezultata. Ali to nisu pravi pokazatelji. Postoje i testovi u kojima uzmete u ruke nekakvu spravu koja mjeri vodljivost tijela i na temelju toga se zaključuje koliko imate masnog tkiva, a na temelju količine masnog

GlycanAge neće dati specifičnu dijagnozu, ali će pružiti uvid u to je li neki organizam „potrošeniji“ nego što bi trebao biti ili je pak u boljem stanju od očekivanog. you hold a device in your hand which measures the conductivity of your body, and on the basis of this it can be calculated how much fatty tissue you have, and then based on the amount of fatty tissue, your biological age can be worked out. Of course, this contains a certain amount of accuracy, but it is very arbitrary. However, a lot of research that has been carried out in the last ten or so years has identified three ways in which biological age can be quantified reliably. The first is DNA methylation, the second is glycans, and the third way is measuring telomere level. Besides the fact that calculating your biological age index level on the basis of DNA methylation is not commercially viable, there is also a certain problem with this index. This is due to DNA methylation being too closely connected with chronological age. In other words, it’s not directly linked to the changes that are the consequences of

various lifestyles. Because of this, the test was never going to be commercially feasible, as it’s not possible to give people useful feedback. The other test on the market, besides the glycans one, measures telomere levels. Telomeres are a very good predictor of age but only for individual cells. When you look at a single cell, it has a so-called timer and can undergo a certain number of divisions after which it dies, because the telomeres have been shortened. However, this result is at the cell level and has nothing to do with age at the level of the organism. Although there are plenty of commercial tests that measure telomere level, a lot of research has shown that changes in telomere length have no predictive power when it comes to the development of illness. What’s more, longer telomeres even represent a bigger risk of tumour development, which is logical as the shortening of telomeres is a biological mechanism in fighting tumours. Each of our cells has a protective mechanism so that it cannot divide forever. In order to keep dividing forever, tumours have to trick this mechanism. Therefore, if we get rid of measuring telomeres as a relevant method for measuring biological age, we are left with methylation and glycans. However, as I’ve already mentioned, methylation has not yet been used for commercial purposes, and there are certainly valid reasons for this. Consequently, glycans, in other words the GlycanAge test, are the only realistic way of assessing biological age that has any sense. The concept of biological age is arbitrary, but what I define as biological age is the general condition of the organism that can help us in preventing the development of illness. As long as I’m biologically young and healthy, I’m not ill. If my biological age is older, it means that I’m entering a higher risk category in terms of becoming ill. We researched people whose details were entered in the database a while ago and saw that the difference in immunoglobulin glycosylation today predicts whether or not the person will become ill in ten years’ time. This is very important because it gives us time to try and prevent the illness. You know yourself that the biggest problem in treating an illness is that most patients go to their doctor when it’s too late. When the damage is greater, it’s harder to treat. If we knew in advance that something was going wrong, it would be easier to avoid the problem or illness. It’s no secret that you took the GlycanAge test. What kind of result did you get? My biological age after the first test was 74, which is very bad when you consider that I’m not 50 yet. I’ve used GlycanAge for a number of years now, and over time I’ve improved things because I’ve worked on myself. My story is in fact an excellent example of how the GlycanAge test should be used. If your biological age is significantly older than your chronological one, you should ask yourself what it is that you’re doing wrong. With me the problem was certainly being overweight, too much work, and stress. Genes also play a role and shouldn’t be ignored, as they indicate that you have a predisposition. However, in my case it wasn’t a question of genes because, according to GlycanAge, my father is younger than me, which is interesting. After the first test, I changed my lifestyle: I lost weight and became more active. The following result was 69 years old, but then I returned to my old habits and 26 | E S P LAN A DE V IEW

Iako postoji puno komercijalnih testova koji mjere razinu telomera, velika istraživanja su pokazala da promjene u duljini telomera nemaju nikakvu prediktivnu moć kad se radi o razvoju bolesti. Štoviše, čak su dulje telomere veći rizik za razvoj tumora, što je logično jer je skraćivanje telomera biološki mehanizam borbe protiv tumora. Svaka naša stanica dobila je osigurač da se ne može vječno dijeliti. I onda tumori, da bi se mogli vječno dijeliti, moraju prevariti taj mehanizam. Dakle, ako izbacimo mjerenje telomera kao relevantnu metodu mjerenja biološke dobi, ostaju metilacija i glikani. Ali kao što sam spomenuo, metilaciju još nitko nije doveo do komercijalne upotrebe za što sigurno postoje valjani razlozi. Dakle, glikani odnosno GlycanAge test jedini realno procjenjuje biološku dob i ima neki smisao, iako je koncept biološke dobi arbitraran. No, ja definiram biološku dob kao opće stanje organizma, koje može pomoći u sprečavanju razvoja bolesti. Kad sam biološki mlad i zdrav, nisam bolestan. Ako je moja biološka dob veća od kronološke, ulazim u kategoriju većeg rizika za pojavu bolesti. Istraživali smo ljude koji su odavno u bazi podataka i vidjeli da trenutačna razlika u glikozilaciji imunoglobulina predviđa hoće li se čovjek razboljeti za deset godina. To je jako važno jer daje vrijeme za pokušaj prevencije bolesti – najveći je problem u liječenju bolesti u tome što većina pacijenata dolazi liječniku prekasno. Kad su oštećenja velika, teško ih je popraviti. Ako bismo znali unaprijed da nešto ide u krivom smjeru, lakše bismo izbjegli problem, odnosno bolest. Vi ste sebe testirali GlycanAge testom, to nije tajna. Koliki je Vaš rezultat? Moja biološka dob je nakon prvog testiranja bila 74, što je jako loše, s obzirom na to da nemam još 50 godina. Radim GlycanAge već nekoliko godina i postupno sam ga popravio jer sam radio na sebi. Moja je priča zapravo odličan primjer čemu bi GlycanAge test trebao služiti. Ako vam je biološka dob znatno veća od kronološke, trebate se zapitati što pogrešno radite. Moji su problemi svakako debljina, puno posla i stres. A tu je i genetika koju ne treba zanemariti jer donosi predispoziciju. No, u mojem slučaju nije u pitanju genetika jer, primjerice, moj otac je prema GlycanAgeu mlađi od mene (što je zanimljivo). Nakon prvog testiranja promijenio sam način života – smršavio sam, puno se kretao i sljedeći rezultat je bio 69 godina. No, onda se sam se vratio starim navikama i biološka dob se vratila na 74. GlycanAge mi je donio još jednu spoznaju nakon koje sam se pobrinuo da kvalitetnije spavam, s obzirom na to da patim od kronične opstruktivne apneje, što znači da se otprilike 300 puta probudim tijekom noći. Zato sada spavam s aparatićem. Ideja GlycanAge testa je da čovjek otkrije svoje stvarno biološko stanje.

my biological age went back to 74. But GlycanAge provided me with another piece of knowledge, after which I started to do something about improving the quality of my sleep. This was that I suffer from chronic obstructive apnoea. This means that I wake up about 300 times every night, and because of that I now sleep with an appliance. The idea behind the GlycanAge test is that a person can find out about their real biological condition. I read your statement that every person has a tumour after they are 40. What does that mean? First, it’s necessary to define what a tumour is. A tumour is any kind of uncontrolled multiplication of cells. It doesn’t mean it’s cancer, because there is a difference between tumours and cancer. Tumours are processes that happen all the time. It’s a fact that, evolutionarily speaking, we are useful as long as we play a role in maintaining the species. As soon as we stop reproducing, we are no longer necessary for the future of the species. Older individuals are actually a burden on our planet. In the last 100 years, life expectancy has increased from 30 or 40 years to more than 70. Evolution, however, cannot keep pace with this tempo, but thanks to medicine, that’s how long we live. It is in this context that I said that after 40 years everyone has some kind of tumour. 100 years ago, a person who was 40 was old, but now we consider ourselves to still be young at that age.

Dakle, to nije rak jer između tumora i raka postoji razlika. Tumori su procesi koji se kontinuirano događaju. Činjenica je da smo, evolucijski gledano, korisni onoliko koliko služimo održavanju vrste. Onog trenutka kad se prestanemo razmnožavati, za budućnost vrste više nismo potrebni. Stare jedinke su zapravo teret na planetu. Tijekom zadnjih 100 godina životni vijek porastao je sa 30 ili 40 godina na sada već više od 70 godina. A evolucija ne može pratiti taj tempo. Ali mi živimo, zahvaljujući medicini. I u tom kontekstu sam rekao da svatko nakon 40. godine ima neki tumor. Čovjek od 40 godina je prije 100 godina bio star, a mi sada smatramo da smo u toj dobi još uvijek mladi. Osječanin ste, a već dugo živite u Zagrebu. Koja mjesta volite u Zagrebu? Često putujem, pa kad sam u Zagrebu, volim biti kod kuće. Volim otići na ručak s obitelji, a najviše volim slastičarnice. Veliki sam obožavatelj kolača. Inače, volim otići na Sljeme. Gotovo svaki dan šećem po Sljemenu jer imam psa koji se treba rastrčavati. Zagreb se jako promijenio, postaje velegrad i volim gledati te promjene u Zagrebu.

You’re from Osijek, but you’ve lived in Zagreb for a long time. What are your favourite places in Zagreb? I travel a lot, so when I’m in Zagreb I like to stay at home. I love going out for lunch with my family, but above all I love patisseries. I’m a big cake fan. As far as places in Zagreb are concerned, I like going up Sljeme. They say that with the Esplanade it is love at first sight, and that the feeling only grows the longer you work in this Zagreb hotel. Such feelings, and many others, are felt for this institution of the Zagreb and Croatian hotel industry by its 47-year-old general manager Ivica Max Krizmanić, who besides carrying out his management duties often has to jump in and open doors for guests, carry suitcases to rooms, and also help out colleagues on reception when the hotel is particularly busy. Takve osjećaje i još mnogo njih prema ovoj instituciji zagrebačkog ali i hrvatskog hotelijerstva gaji 47-godišnji direktor Ivica Max Krizmanić koji uz rukovoditeljske obveze, kad se u hotelu posao „zagužva“, nerijetko uskoči otvoriti vrata gostima i ponijeti kovčeg do sobe te pomoći kolegama na recepciji. The Hotel Esplanade is a symbol of Zagreb that people even talk about abroad. Exactly why this hotel is so special is sometimes hard to put into words. There is a welcoming and warm feeling as soon as you enter it, as well as a unique combination of tradition and modernity in its distinctive historical atmosphere, and it is one of the rare hotels that is not situated between buildings but whose four walls are its own. And behind these walls, the hotel staff work, develop and complement each other. Most of the staff have been working in the hotel for a number of years, and some of them for almost their entire working lives. One of these longtime employees is Ivica Max Krizmanić, the general manager of the Hotel Esplanade. It was a combination of circumstances that led the then 20-year-old Max to start working at the Hotel Esplanade as a doorman. His father, who for a number of years had been a member of staff at the hotel, asked him if he wanted to spend a month working as

Osjećaj topline i dobrodošlice pri ulasku, jedinstveni spoj tradicije i modernog u posebnom povijesnom ambijentu, jedan od rijetkih hotela koji nije smješten između zgrada, već su sva četiri zida njegova. A iza tih zidova rade, razvijaju se i nadopunjuju djelatnici hotela. Većina zaposlenih u hotelu radi godinama, a poneki i gotovo cijeli svoj radni vijek. Jedan od dugogodišnjih zaposlenika je i Ivica Max Krizmanić, glavni direktor Hotela Esplanade. Spletom životnih okolnosti, tada 20-godišnji Max počeo je raditi u hotelu Esplanade kao vratar. Naime, njegov ga je otac, koji je tada već godinama bio hotelski zaposlenik, zamolio da uskoči mjesec dana na radno mjesto vratara, preko studentskog ugovora. Max je ponudu prihvatio. a doorman while he was still a student, and Max accepted the offer. The month turned into 25 years, and for the last seven years he has actually managed the hotel. Krizmanić has worked in practically all the departments in the hotel, working as a doorman, porter, receptionist, and chief receptionist, and doing various management jobs, including being general manager. As a result, it could be said that he knows the soul of the hotel. His suitability for the general manager’s position is testified to by the fact that he recently received the hotel industry’s Five Star Diamond Award. This is a prestigious award that recognises excellence in hotel management, which means that Krizmanić’s ideas of how to run this historic jewel certainly impressed his colleagues in the industry. If you want to work in an institution of the hotel industry like the Esplanade, first of all you have to be aware of precisely what it is. This feeling and a sense of love towards the hotel was first transmitted to Max by his father, and his relationship with the hotel has continued to develop through the years that he has worked in it. Besides love and respect for the job, working in the hotel involves a tremendous responsibility. “When you work in the Esplanade, you don’t just see it as a job. It’s a great honour but also an enormous responsibility because you have been given something beautiful that you have to care for and make even more beautiful day by day”, explains Max. All the members of staff at the Esplanade have obviously put this into practice, because this year at the Days of Tourism in Hvar the hotel received the industry award for best city hotel and also, for the first time, the best hotel in Croatia. “Being the best hotel in Croatia is tremendous recognition for all of us who every day have looked after and nurtured the heritage and memories of times past, even going back to the age of the Orient Express for which the hotel was actually opened, and also for all the guests who have stayed here as well as all those who will stay here in the future. I can’t easily condense into a few sentences the emotions that I felt after we received the award. It was a mixture of happiness and collective pride when you know that you have succeeded in meeting tremendous expectations. That day, champagne was opened and some colleagues even shed tears of joy. That’s how much this hotel means to all of us - even more than any kind of award”, says Max. Naturally, receiving a lot of recognition and awards is the result of intelligent planning and work. In addition, the general tourism offer and accommodation capacity in Croatia have been raised to a higher level compared to last year. In particular, we should mention Zagreb in this context, as the capital city of Croatia, because of its fantastic results and excellent planning, has also been declared a hit destination this year. “Commitment to our work and excellent service, together with intelligent planning and thinking about what Zagreb and the whole of Croatia have to offer tourists, as well as the marketing that our guests do for us, were a winning combination for a final result that we’d been waiting for”, adds Max. It is precisely for this reason that the management of the hotel pays a lot of attention to employing new staff. Having a lot of experience isn’t so important, because everything that needs to be known about excellence in the hotel industry can be learnt at the Esplanade. The primary focus is on the feelings of the employee and their perception of what the hotel means. Only those that have this in themselves will be employed and become part of the Esplanade family. The usual forms of ‘suitable’ behaviour at a five-star hotel do not exist in the Esplanade. For the individuals who work here, politeness and respect for guests is a universal value, and they know how to give the best of themselves and communicate properly with guests and recognise what it is that they require, even by just making eye contact. “You wouldn’t believe how many thank you e-mails I answer every day. Reading the positive experiences of guests in which they name my colleagues and give examples of their warmth and helpfulness makes me feel happy and proud that I’m part of a wonderful story and that I know that the spirit of the Esplanade lives on.” Even back in Yugoslavia, the Esplanade was considered to be the best hotel. The inhabitants of Zagreb without hesitation would recommend the Hotel Esplanade as the best hotel in these parts. Today, you can still hear the expression “Do you think you’re in the Esplanade?” when someone is thought to be asking for too much. In order to maintain such a reputation, the whole hotel has to work hard. “As long as we treat

Još jedna od glavnih tajni uspjeha hotela svakako je i isprepletenost usluge s dizajnom – bogato arhitektonsko rješenje koje pruža jedinstveni doživljaj, zatim brojni pojedinci koji svatko na svoj način upotpunjuju iskustvo posjeta hotelu. Upravo iz tog razloga rukovodstvo Esplanade mnogo pažnje pridaje zapošljavanju novih djelatnika. Ovdje rade pojedinci kojima su ljubaznost i poštovanje prema gostu univerzalna vrijednost i koji znaju izvući najbolje iz sebe, pravilno komunicirati s gostom i prepoznati njegove potrebe, čak i pri prvom kontaktu očima. – Ne biste vjerovali na koliko e-mailova s pohvalama dnevno odgovaram. Čitajući pozitivna iskustva gostiju, u kojima poimence nabrajaju moje kolege i njihovu srdačnost i snalažljivost, sretan sam i ponosan što sam dio jedne prekrasne priče i znam da Esplanadin duh živi i dalje – kaže direktor Max. Još u vremenu bivše Jugoslavije Esplanade je bila poznata kao najbolji hotel. Stanovnici grada Zagreba bez puno razmišljanja preporučili bi hotel Esplanade kao najbolji na ovim prostorima. – Dok se prema gostima odnosimo kako treba, dok se u očima djelatnika vide iskrenost i pozitivnost u komunikaciji, unutar ova četiri zida uvijek će vladati opuštena atmosfera. Predanost radu, motivacija, otvorenost uma i vedrina duha naše su ključne prednosti. Imperativ savršenosti ne priznajemo jer nosi uštogljenost i ukočenost, a to je suprotno od onog što mi želimo i radimo – smatra Max.

In addition to the high-level service here, new trends are being developed and introduced on a daily basis in cooperation with the IT sector, and the Esplanade was one of the first hotels in the world to have its own application. Today, hotel staff have numerous internal-use applications designed to make the whole business process easier and quicker. In addition, a lot of attention is paid to being environmentally aware, and so the Esplanade team even has an application which measures the wear of individual mattresses so that they don’t get disposed of before it is necessary.

Uz uslugu koja je ovdje na visokoj razini, svakodnevno se smišljaju i uvode novi trendovi u suradnji s IT sektorom, pa je Hotel Esplanade među prvima u svijetu imao svoju aplikaciju. Danas osoblje hotela ima brojne aplikacije za internu upotrebu, čija je svrha da olakšaju i ubrzaju cjelokupno poslovanje. Osim toga, velika se pažnja pridaje ekološki osviještenom poslovanju, pa Esplanadin tim ima čak i aplikaciju koja mjeri potrošenost pojedinog madraca, kako se ne bi bacio prebrzo.

Although it is a historic hotel, it is important to keep up with the times. As the general manager says, using high-level modern technology is completely normal today. Unlocking your hotel room door with a smart phone or guests being provided with tablets to use are no longer novelties. However, despite all the great IT services, guests still love simplicity. This means that nowadays the only real luxury is having a feeling of peace and relaxation, which is what is offered to all guests at the Hotel Esplanade. It is not easy to reach the level of quality offered by the Esplanade today. It is not just its history, visual experience and level of service, but also all the guests who have passed through it and who are still doing so today. “We don’t want to be just a hotel. We do not suffer from excessive standardisation and nor do we want our guests to think that there is some kind of formal code of behaviour in this hotel simply because it has five stars. Primjerice, otključavanje vrata hotelske sobe pametnim telefonom ili pružanje tableta gostu na korištenje više nisu novosti. Međutim, od silnih IT usluga, gost se ipak okrenuo jednostavnosti, što znači da je danas jedini pravi luksuz imati osjećaj mira i opuštenosti, a to je pruženo svim gostima hotela Esplanade. Nije lako dostići razinu kvalitete koju nudi Espalande. Ne samo zbog svoje povijesti, vizualnog doživljaja i usluge, već i zbog svih gostiju koji su prošli kroz hotel i koji će to učiniti već danas. – Ne želimo biti samo hotel. Just Any Tie! The tie – purely as a fashion accessory – has always indicated a refined sense of style. It will never make you warm or cool you down, nor will it make your life easier. However, ever since Croatian soldiers introduced it to Europe in the 17th century, men who take pride in how they look have accepted it wholeheartedly. Splendour, luxury, charm and a harmonious experience are combined in the floral arrangements that decorate all the rooms of the Hotel Esplanade Raskoš, luksuz, prpošnost i jedinstvo doživljaja objedinjeni su u cvjetnim dekoracijama kojima su ukrašene sve prostorije hotela Esplanade

For the past seven years, 32-year-old Tihana Betcik has been responsible for choosing and arranging the flowers in the rooms at the Hotel Esplanade. Tihana was engaged in making sure everything looks exactly as it should even before she became a member of staff at the hotel, as she was employed as an external consultant in a firm that worked with the hotel. During this time, the need arose for the hotel to employ a member of staff exclusively dedicated to looking after the floral arrangements and brightening up the ambience. Since Tihana’s talent and feel for what is beautiful had already been recognised, she was offered the position. “I didn’t need to think it over; I accepted the offer immediately. You can see why as soon as you look at this impressive building”, Tihana recalls. Given that the floral arrangements throughout the entire hotel have to be changed every week, the

Posljednjih sedam godina za odabir i aranžiranje cvijeća u prostorima hotela Esplanade zadužena je 32-godišnja Tihana Betcik. Given that the floral arrangements throughout the entire hotel have to be changed every week, the hotel floral designer’s work requires a great deal of creativity. Colleagues from other departments assist in bringing Tihana’s ideas to life, and the final decision on how the hotel will be decorated during a particular week is a team one. Colleagues from other departments assist in bringing Tihana’s ideas to life, and the final decision on how the hotel will be decorated during a particular week is a team one. Once the new floral arrangements have been completed, they are maintained and replenished during the week so that they are always attractive and fresh. In addition, the colours will depend upon the season, or to be more precise upon the season in which a flower blooms. Thus in spring and summer, whites and gentle blues and pinks predominate, in the autumn peachy tones prevail that lift the ambience, while the arrival of winter sees red, copper and golden hues. Details, such as vases and other decorative elements need to be harmonised with the types of flowers and also with the current theme. The arrangements for Christmas are particularly lavish, as this holiday has a special place at the Esplanade. The Esplanade’s Christmas fairy tale, which is dominated by nutcrackers, reindeer and a host of other decorations, sees something new added each year so that the familiar story gets a new appearance. In order for the inside of the Esplanade to look special, the floral arrangements need to be well prepared and coordinated with the interior of the hotel, which is full of luxurious details such as crystal chandeliers and golden hues. This is no easy matter, and the person responsible for arranging the flowers is at the same time a designer.

Zato u proljeće i ljeto prevladavaju bijeli, nježnoplavi i ružičasti tonovi, u jesen su dominantniji breskvasti koji „podižu“ prostor, a s dolaskom zime fokus je na crvenim, bakrenim i zlatnim tonovima. Osim toga, dodatne detalje poput vaza i drugih ukrasa potrebno je prilagoditi vrsti cvijeća, kao i aktualnoj temi. Posebno je bogat asortiman božićnih dekoracija jer Božić u Esplanadi ima posebno mjesto. Esplanadina se božićna bajka, kojom dominiraju orašari, sobovi i mnoštvo drugih ukrasa, svake godine dopunjuje nečim novim, pa započeta priča dobiva novi nastavak. Budući da je cijeli Esplanadin interijer poseban, cvjetne aranžmane valja dobro pripremiti i prilagoditi unutrašnjem prostoru hotela koji je prepun raskošnih detalja poput kristalnih lustera i zlatne boje. To nije nimalo jednostavan zadatak, a osoba koja brine o cvijeću istovremeno je i dizajner. Cvijeće je važan detalj kojim su ukrašene sve prostorije hotela: od predvorja, recepcije, bara i restorana do soba i predsjedničkog apartmana. Flowers are an important detail with which all the rooms of the hotel are decorated: from the lobby, reception, bar and restaurant, to the rooms and presidential suite. The experienced eye of the hotel floral designer chooses those floral details that enhance or complement the feeling of luxury, and that simultaneously heighten the sense of a warm welcome when you enter the building. The most common flower to be seen at the Esplanade is the orchid, which is synonymous with luxury and thus also with this beautiful Zagreb hotel. In addition, the Esplanade’s interior loves the rich but soft and full-bodied forms of flowers like hydrangeas that appear in the warmer months of the year, and which give such a sense of fullness and relaxation to a room that guests sometimes ask whether or not the flowers are actually real. It goes without saying that all the flowers in the hotel are fresh, and those which are not available in Croatia are ordered from countries such as the Netherlands or Ecuador. Osim orhideja, Esplanadin interijer voli bogate ali meke i pune oblike cvjetova, poput hortenzija koje u obzir dolaze tijekom toplih mjeseci u godini, koji doprinose punoći prostora i osjećaju opuštenosti, pa se ponekad gosti hotela pitaju je li cvijeće uopće živo. Naravno, sve cvijeće u hotelu je svježe, a ono koje se ne može u nekom trenutku nabaviti u Hrvatskoj, uvozi se iz drugih zemalja, poput Nizozemske ili Ekvadora. Posao cvjećarice izuzetno je važan za funkcioniranje hotela, ne samo zbog svakodnevnog ukrašavanja interijera, već i zbog zadovoljavanja potreba gostiju – od intimnih slavlja do obilježavanja velikih događaja. Nerijetko gosti za proslavu rođendana ili godišnjice braka biraju upravo hotel Esplanade, pa Tihana po narudžbi izrađuje cvjetne aranžmane. Guests often choose to celebrate their birthday or wedding anniversary at the Hotel Esplanade, and Tihana makes flower arrangements to order. You can get everything here, from classic bouquets of red roses, to flowers in baskets or boxes combined with a cake or some other gift delivered to the room. During her career at the hotel, Tihana has fulfilled various additional wishes of guests, which pleases her because, as she says, it is another opportunity to create or shape something completely new. One guest wanted her suite to be decorated with glamorous balls of flowers which, apart from hanging from the ceiling, were positioned around the Jacuzzi. On another occasion, the Emerald Ballroom was transformed into an avenue of cherry trees for the purpose of a gala dinner. The client wanted to decorate the room in cherry trees in bloom specially for the event. Luckily, this corresponded with the period in which they were flowering, and so the room was transformed into an imaginative and unusual sight, and the client’s wish was fulfilled. In this example, as in many others, the Esplanade showed itself to be a leader in providing great hospitality and, what is more, that it is synonymous with a certain lifestyle. Large events such as weddings and gala dinners require great attention and responsibility. On such occasions, the creativity of the Esplanade’s floral designer reaches new heights, and her final creations, both live and in photographs, represent real “masterpieces”. “Above all, it’s important to listen to what the client wants. When it comes to weddings, the bride and groom often aren’t sure about what kind of floral decorations they want, but we always start with the basics, which means the budget, and the type and colour of flowers, and then everything after that flows from my inspiration. Of course, there are also those clients who know exactly what they want, and we respect that”, Tihana explains. The process of decorating a large room like the Emerald Ballroom is a specific task, but this hotel floral designer is never

Primjerice, jedna je gošća poželjela da se njezin apartman ukrasi glamuroznim cvjetnim kuglama koje su, osim što su visjele sa stropa, postavljene i oko jacuzzija. A jednom je Smaragdna dvorana za svečanu večeru preobražena u drvored trešanja. Klijent je, naime, za taj događaj želio ukrasiti dvoranu stablima trešanja u cvatu. Nasreću, bilo je baš vrijeme njihova cvjetanja, pa je dvorana pretvorena u maštovit i nesvakidašnji prizor i klijentova je želja ispunjena. Na ovom primjeru, kao i na mnoštvu drugih, Esplanada se dokazala kao predvodnica dobrog ugostiteljstva, ali i više od toga: ona je sinonim jednog stila življenja. Veliku pažnju i posvećenost zahtijevaju veliki događaji, poput vjenčanja ili svečanih večera, kad kreativnost Esplanadine cvjećarice doseže najveću razinu, a njezini su završni proizvodi uživo, kao i na fotografijama prava remek-djela. – Prije svega, važno je poslušati što klijent želi. Kad se radi o vjenčanju, mladenci najčešće nisu sigurni u to kakvu cvjetnu dekoraciju žele, ali uvijek krećemo od osnove: budžet, vrsta i boja cvijeća, pa sve ostalo proizlazi iz moje inspiracije. Naravno, postoje i klijenti koji točno znaju što žele, i to poštujemo – objasnila je Tihana. Proces ukrašavanja velike dvorane poput Smaragdne specifičan je posao, no kreativnosti ovoj hotelskoj cvjećarici ne nedostaje jer, kako kaže, radi na mjestu koje je samo po sebi velika inspiracija, pa dvoranu „oblači“ u veličanstvene prizore i gosti pri prvom ulasku doslovce ostaju bez teksta, očarani onim što vide. – Daješ dušu u cijeli proces stvaranja i to se vidi: Smaragdna dvorana ukrašena svijećnjacima s kojih padaju kristali ili pak svijećnjacima visokim više od 90 centimetara, bogati cvjetni aranžmani, ugođaj koji se stvara kad se upale svijeće i njihovim odsjajem u kristalima... Na kraju, prekrasna priča u kojoj atmosfera nikog ne ostavlja ravnodušnim – opisala je Tihana.

As she herself says, she works in a place which in itself is a great source of inspiration, and she is able to turn the ballroom into a magnificent sight so that the guests upon entering it are literally left speechless and enchanted by what they see. “You put your whole soul into the creative process, and it can be seen – the Emerald Ballroom decorated with candelabras from which crystals drop or with candlesticks over 90 centimetres high, and rich floral arrangements, and just the atmosphere created by the lit candles and the way they glint in the crystals – ultimately, it’s a beautiful story in an atmosphere that leaves no one untouched”, says Tihana. In many cases, the hotel floral designer also decorates the home of the bride if a reception is being held there for guests before the wedding, and also the car in which the newlyweds will be driven, as well as producing floral crowns for the bridesmaids, and buttonholes and bracelets for the guests in order to create a single theme. In fact, clients can get many services in one place: from the venue and catering, to the flowers. As a result, their wedding is harmoniously sequenced in a way that can be beautifully seen in the wedding photographs that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Whether it is for a wedding or a gala dinner, Tihana prepares the arrangements 24-48 hours in advance, since flowers by nature cannot be arranged any earlier. Other hotel colleagues lend a helping hand. Although they are not responsible for decorating the venue, they help out with watering or storing the flowers appropriately. On such occasions, if the client does not specify beforehand what is required, then Tihana arranges the flowers according to something that is specific to the client, such as the company logo or the colours of a flag, if the host is an embassy, so that the event is recognisable. The Emerald Ballroom, though full of design features, shines even more when decorated with flowers. Its sophistication and unique charm are its distinctive characteristics, and make it a real hit when it comes to holding gala events and glamorous dinners. No other location in the city can surpass what the Hotel Esplanade and the Emerald Ballroom have to offer. Events held here are talked about for months afterwards. This is not just because of the excellent service and overall organisation but because of the details like the flowers, which give special events a completely new dimension. “My creativity here knows no boundaries. Sometimes, an idea takes root immediately, while on other occasions it emerges step by step once I have thrown myself into the job. I usually tell clients which flowers would be best based on the season in which the wedding or other event is going to be held. A flower should always be looked at once it has been arranged and never individually. Each flower can give a lot if you know what to do with it. Flowers might be expensive, but nothing else can provide the idea of the magnificence of a room like they do”, concludes Tihana.

Nerijetko hotelska cvjećarica ukrašava i dom mladenaca u kojem je organiziran prijem gostiju prije vjenčanja te automobil u kojem se mladenci voze, a izrađuje i cvjetne tijare za djeveruše, revere i narukvice za uzvanike, kako bi se kreirala jedinstvena tema. Klijenti tako punu uslugu mogu dobiti na jednome mjestu: od prostora, hrane do cvijeća, a njihova svadbena priča ima povezani slijed koji se lijepo uočava i na fotografijama s vjenčanja koje ostaju uspomena za cijeli život. Kao i za vjenčanja, i za održavanje svečanih večeri Tihana aranžmane priprema 24 do 48 sati unaprijed, s obzirom na to da struka ne dopušta ranije rukovanje biljkama. U pomoć joj priskoče i kolege iz hotela koji nisu zaduženi za dekoraciju, ali pripomognu oko njege cvijeća, odnosno zalijevanja te pravilnog skladištenja. Za takvu vrstu događaja, ako klijent nije unaprijed definirao što želi, Tihana cvijeće prilagođava onome što je specifično za domaćina te večeri, primjerice logotipu tvrtke ili bojama zastave, ako je primjerice domaćin neko veleposlanstvo, kako bi sve bilo prepoznatljivo. Smaragdna dvorana, ionako bogato uređena, zablista još više kad se dekorira cvijećem. Sofisticiranost i poseban šarm njezine su prepoznatljive karakteristike, pa je itekako dobar izbor za održavanje svečanih i glamuroznih večera. Niti jedno mjesto u gradu ne može nadmašiti ono što pružaju hotel Esplanade i Smaragdna dvorana. O eventima održanima upravo ovdje govori se i mjesecima poslije, ne samo zbog vrhunske usluge i cjelokupne organizacije, već i zbog detalja poput ukrašavanja cvijećem, koji svečanosti daju posve novu dimenziju. – Moja kreativnost ovdje ne poznaje granice. Ponekad se ideja rodi odmah, ponekad postupno, kad se bacim na posao. Klijente najčešće savjetujem o tome koje vrste cvijeća koristiti, ovisno o sezoni u kojoj žele održati vjenčanje ili neku drugu svečanost. Cvijet se uvijek promatra kad se aranžira, a nikako ne pojedinačno. Svaki cvijet može dati jako puno, ako se njime zna raditi. Cvijeće možda jest skupo, ali ništa ne može pružiti toliki dojam veličanstvenosti prostora kao što ga pruža cvijeće – zaključila je Tihana.

The DeLight clothing brand was launched with the aim of empowering women in the area of business clothing, especially in terms of quality suits and coats. The brand was the brainchild of Ivan Friščić, who after 11 years working in the fashion industry decided two years ago to start DeLight, which very quickly imposed itself on the market for women’s business clothing. Rich materials, strong lines, simplicity and functionality are the qualities of this season’s collection. The main features of the collection are plaid designs, particularly suits, permeated with different colours and patterns. As always, the collection is dominated by high-quality, natural materials such as cotton lace, viscose, cotton, cashmere, wool, and camel hair. The cuts in the collection flatter every type of body and material. They emphasise the best on a woman but in a discrete way also conceal the occasional problem area. The accent is on the functionality of the clothes themselves and on a quality that guarantees comfort. The classic business suit in a selection of dark shades looks extremely elegant, while the classically cut day dresses are in black and grey. The evening gowns made of cotton lace will certainly be the stars of the forthcoming holiday season.

In the past few years, Split has turned into a popular tourist destination and become one of the most fashionable places to visit in Croatia for domestic and foreign visitors alike. Besides the increasing number of visitors who come during the summer months to discover the city, and enjoy its sunshine and beautiful pristine sea, Split has also developed into an attractive tourist destination in winter, and has seen a real boom during Advent. Split se tijekom posljednjih nekoliko godina preobrazio u popularno turističko odredište i postao jedno od najpoželjnijih hrvatskih turističkih odredišta domaćih i stranih gostiju. Osim toga što sve više posjetitelja dolazi tijekom ljetnih mjeseci, kad otkrivaju grad, uživaju u suncu i predivnom čistom moru, Split je postao turistička destinacija koja se ne propušta ni zimi. A procvat je doživio tijekom adventa.

What attracts visitors to Split so much? Once the residence of the Emperor Diocletian, the city is nowadays known for Diocletian’s Palace, which has been made popular by the TV series Game of Thrones, as some of the scenes of this globally acclaimed series were filmed on location here. Split has other well-known cultural and historical landmarks as well, and also exciting events and a variety of cultural and tourist performances that are no longer restricted to the summer months. Many visitors drawn to “the City under Marjan Hill” have discovered that Split is a great place to be during Advent too. Advent in Split has been organised for a number years, and the programme gets better and more varied each year. This year, advent in Split is taking place under the name Winter Watercolour Advent and Christmass festivites in Split. Although the city is always enchanting, during Advent it has an extra glow as a result of the plethora of colourful lights and glittering decorations. However, the beauty of the city is not the only thing that appeals to visitors. Nobody is able to resist the smell of the homemade Christmas cookies and mulled wine that entice you the moment you step onto the waterfront (popularly known as Riva) or stroll along the streets of the city. The small wooden stalls that can be found on the waterfront, at the Tourist Palace, and on People’s Square (known as Narodni trg or Pjaca) are a symbol of getting together, companionship and a genuine Christmas spirit. A festive warmth can be felt at every step, and once you take to the streets of Split, you will feel at home. Besides their culinary offer, the stalls also sell a variety of souvenirs, largely made by locals. Take your pick to remind yourself of the great moments you had in Split. Grad koji je nekad bio pod vladavinom cara Dioklecijana danas je, između ostalog, poznat i po Dioklecijanovoj palači koju je popularizirala televizijska serija „Igra prijestolja“. Naime, na lokacijama palače snimljene su neke scene ove serije koja je zaludjela cijeli svijet. If you happen to find yourself in Split on 31 December, you should know that you are in for a magnificent New Year’s Eve on the waterfront and in the streets of the city. With plenty of music, laughter and a glass of champagne, you can leave your worries behind you and happily embark upon the new year. The main stage is located on the waterfront, and every day of Advent will see numerous musicians and artists who will allow you to enjoy the fantastic Christmas and New Year celebrations with their festive programme. You can enjoy the music during the day or at night. Everyone is sure to find something they like in the varied music offer. In addition to their regular sets, the traditional Dalmatian vocal groups (known as klape) and other performers will sing and play Christmas carols. Many DJs will perform during Advent as well, which will make younger visitors happy for sure. Church choirs will contribute to the Christmas spirit by singing Christmas carols. The youngest visitors will be able to enjoy the Christmas train and many festive programmes on offer, so if you have any doubt about whether to pay a visit to Split with your children, rest assured there is no reason why you shouldn’t. An attractive culinary offer can be sampled at the stalls and in the many restaurants, which will prevent you from going hungry. Every year, an increasing number of restaurants try their best to outdo the delicious

This year, Mamić, a proud member of the Rolex family is celebrating a grand jubilee – the 40th anniversary of partnership with Rolex. On this occasion, a unique Daytona exhibition has been inaugurated at a gala dinner celebration at Esplanade Zagreb hotel. The exhibition tells the story behind a legendary watch, the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, and it is dedicated to the passion for speed and motor sport that inspired the iconic chronograph.

Ove godine obitelj Mamić, ponosni zastupnik i član Rolex obitelji slavi veliki jubilej – 40. obljetnicu partnerstva s Rolexom. Svečana prigoda proslavljena je gala večerom u hotelu Esplanade Zagreb prilikom koje je upriličena je i inauguracija jedinstvene Daytona izložbe. Priča je to koja stoji iza legendarnog sata, Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, posvećena strasti za brzinom i moto sportom koji je inspirirao kultni kronograf.

Through a series of panels and interactive displays the exhibition retraces the origins and evolution of the Cosmograph Daytona, an evocative watch named after the capital of speed in Florida (USA) and prized by the world’s fastest racing drivers and enthusiasts alike. Visitors of the exhibition, which was opened for the public on September 28th and 29th also had a unique opportunity to admire the new Cosmograph Daytona in Oystersteel fitted with a monobloc Cerachrom bezel in black ceramic, combining the technical excellence and performance that distinguish Rolex with characteristic aesthetics inspired by the model’s unique heritage.

Created in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona was born for racing and soon established an extraordinary track record in the world of motor sport thanks to its reliability and performance. Known simply as the “Daytona”, the watch has risen to the rank of an icon as one of the best known and most coveted chronographs in the world.

DAYTONA, WORLD CAPITAL OF SPEED

It all began on the beach at Daytona Beach, Florida in the early the 20th century. This broad band of hard-packed sand – a straight, flat stretch more than 35 kilometres (22 miles) long – became one of the legendary sites in the conquest of speed and the advent of motor racing. The motor racing tradition persisted on the beach until the late 1950s. It then continued on the purpose-built Daytona International Speedway, opened in 1959 as one of the first Super Speedways in the world. Daytona International Speedway inherited a formidable history, and gave its name to the chronograph Rolex created in 1963: the Cosmograph Daytona.

THE LEGEND LIVES ON

For half a century, the Cosmograph Daytona has created its own legend. By the mid-1960s, it had become the winner’s trophy at the 24 Hours of Daytona, a race inaugurated in 1962 and renamed Rolex 24 At Daytona® in 1992. Today, the Rolex Daytona chronograph is still regarded as the highest honour for many of the world’s best endurance racing drivers who compete there each January.

KRAUTHAKER GALA DINNER

One of Croatia’s leading winemakers, Vlado Krauthaker, organised a gala dinner at Zinfandel’s restaurant which brought together leading figures from the culinary world. The highest standards for this event were fulfilled by Chef Ana Grgić, whose menu made sure that every wine that was drunk during the evening was perfectly matched. The Krauthaker winery has been a business partner and friend of the Esplanade for a number of years. Besides the fact that their wine is served as the house wine, in 2013 Mr Krauthaker gave the restaurant several zinfandel vines, which staff still tend today in the garden on the Oleander Terrace.

The graduation ceremony of the students of the most innovative communications and tourism course is held annually in the magnificent Emerald Ballroom of the Hotel Esplanade. A NEW OLIVE OIL AT ZINFANDEL’S

Chef Ana Grgić and the team at Zinfandel’s restaurant recently started using a new olive oil called NAI 3.3, which is produced on Dugi Otok. This quality olive oil is one of 30 of the most respected olive oil brands in the world and has won several international prizes, and is the first to receive an organic produce certificate in Croatia. Its unusual name of Nai comes from the now-extinct language of the area, and means snow, while 3.3 is the number of days that it snows on average on Dugi Otok. According to olive growers, if it snows on the island during the year, a better yield can be expected. The top-quality cuisine of Zinfandel’s and the long tradition and excellent taste of NAI 3.3 oil complement each other perfectly and provide guests with the ultimate dining pleasure.

RBA SUMMER TALK

This summer saw the holding of another annual RBA Summer Talk, a meeting of Raiffeisen Bank representatives and their clients in the informal surroundings of the Hotel Esplanade on the wonderful Oleander Terrace. The welcome snacks of Chef Ana Grgić and her team, the delicious sweets of the Esplanade’s first-rate confectioners, and the great musical programme allowed the bank’s clients and representatives to socialise with each other in addition to participating at the interesting presentations of financial experts. Summer Talk has taken place for a number of years now at the Esplanade in June, when the Oleander Terrace becomes the venue for receptions and evening events, with a great atmosphere provided by local musicians.

Šefica Ana Grgić i tim restorana Zinfandel’s nedavno su plasirali novo službeno maslinovo ulje pod nazivom NAI 3.3, koje se proizvodi na Dugom otoku. Ovo vrhunsko ulje jedno je od 30 najcjenjenijih brendova maslinovih ulja na svijetu, dobitnik nekoliko međunarodnih nagrada i prvo s ekološkim certifikatom u Hrvatskoj. Njegovo neobično ime Nai na izumrlom jeziku dugootočkoga podneblja znači snijeg, dok 3.3 proizlazi iz prosječnog broja dana u kojima na Dugom otoku pada snijeg – naime, prema pričama maslinara, u godini u kojoj na otoku padne snijeg očekuje se bolji urod. A GREAT CELEBRATION WITH A RED AND WHITE FAÇADE

The fantastic final of the World Cup and the glitter of Croatia’s silver medal was celebrated by the entire city, and in honour of the magnificent performance of the Croatian football team, the Hotel Esplanade decorated its façade in a red and white chequerboard design. The euphoric celebrations went into extra time and so the attractive red and white chequerboard motif dedicated to the team’s unprecedented success stayed for their arrival in Zagreb, and numerous guests who found themselves next to hotel took the opportunity provided by the light installation to take a photo to mark this historic moment.

ESPLANADE ŠTRUKLI ON THE TRAVEL CHANNEL

This year, the globally popular American TV channel the Travel Channel chose the Esplanade and Le Bistro as the venue for shooting its show Bizarre Food: Delicious Destinations, which was first broadcast in 2015, and which attracts over 7.5 million viewers. Host Andrew Zimmern reveals to viewers the hidden secrets behind the most popular specialities from various destinations in the world, which in this case meant the famous Esplanade štrukli, a traditional feature of the cuisine of continental Croatia. Filming took place in the chic surroundings of Le Bistro and the Esplanade’s patisserie, where Chef Ana Grgić and her team of confectioners prepared štrukli in front of the cameras. The programme focuses on the best parts of travelling: fascinating locations, tasty food, and the telling of stories in a different way. The elegant surroundings of Zinfandel’s restaurant provided the perfect setting for the Vantage Garden boutique agency to organise an exclusive wedding brunch, during which the Mia Couture salon premiered the new collection of luxury hand-sewn wedding dresses of Israeli designer Galia Lahav, which brides all over the world long for the chance to wear. The luxury dresses perfectly suited the well-known models, who also cut a wedding cake and tossed a bouquet for unmarried guests to catch.

40th anniversary celebrations to mark the partnership between the Mamić family and Rolex Proslavljena 40. godišnjica partnerstva obitelji Mamić i Rolexa As part of the celebrations, the opening of the great Rolex Daytona exhibition was held. U sklopu svečane proslave održana je i svečana inauguracija velike Rolex Daytona izložbe. This autumn at the Hotel Esplanade in Zagreb, the Mamić family, a proud representative and member of the Rolex family, celebrated the 40th anniversary of their partnership with the Swiss watchmaker based in Geneva that has a global reputation for excellence for the quality, reliability and precision of its watches. As part of the celebrations, the great Rolex Daytona exhibition was officially opened. This is the first time that it has been organised in Croatia, and it provides a complete insight into the story of this legendary chronograph.

Obitelj Mamić, ponosni zastupnik i član Rolex obitelji, proslavila je ove jeseni u hotelu Esplanade Zagreb veliki jubilej, 40. godišnjicu partnerstva s Rolexom, švicarskim proizvođačem satova sa sjedištem u Ženevi, koji ima globalnu reputaciju za izvrsnost u kvaliteti, pouzdanosti i preciznosti svojih satova. U sklopu proslave održana je i svečana inauguracija velike Rolex Daytona izložbe koja se prvi put organizirala u Hrvatskoj te daje potpuni uvid u priču o ovom legendarnom kronografu.

An evening to remember was organised for long-standing clients and business partners, and the event was attended by distinguished guests from the fields of business, culture, science and sport. The prominent guests included Her Excellency Emilija Georgieva Regamey, the Swiss Ambassador to Croatia, for whom this was the first official engagement since assuming the post. Mrs Georgieva Regamey emphasised how pleased she was to see the successful cooperation between the Mamić family and Rolex, a mainstay of the Swiss economy, which has already lasted an impressive 40 years, and added that both companies were linked by a common thread in their striving for excellence in every segment of business.

Through a short video, made specially for the occasion, guests had the opportunity to become acquainted with the history of Mamić 1970, which was founded by Pero Mamić, and its fantastic partnership with Rolex, thanks to its great expertise and professionalism. During his career, Mr Mamić even worked for Rolex in New York as one of four members of an expert group. On this occasion, Mr Mamić stated: “It’s a great honour and responsibility working with Rolex all these years. Professionalism, responsibility and love for my work have guided me through these years, and it is these qualities that I want to share with the other team members who have successfully continued the family business and partnership with Rolex.”

Kroz kratku videopriču, snimljenu posebno za ovu prigodu, uzvanici su imali priliku upoznati se s poviješću tvrtke Mamić 1970, koju je započeo osnivač Pero Mamić velikim partnerstvom s Rolexom, zahvaljujući besprijekornoj stručnosti i profesionalizmu. It was a special moment when the announcer for the evening, actress Bojana Gregorić, declared the opening of the fantastic Rolex Daytona exhibition, which is devoted to the passion for speed and motor sport that inspired this icon of chronograph watches. The Rolex Daytona exhibition was organised to commemorate this special occasion and provide a wonderful experience as a mark of gratitude for support and brand loyalty spanning four decades.

At first glance, this element seems very simple, yet it hides so many different stories as does for example a pebble that has been shaped by the river carrying it along its bed for so many years. In a way, through its basic form the Gaea Collection thus symbolizes a man shaped by life, experience, and people he or she meets into a unique and one of a kind personality. It reminds us every single day that everything changes and that even the smallest of change frequently needs time and, above all, the vicinity of other pebbles. The nucleus of every volume in the Gaea Collection is the mirror made of white gold which is surrounded by a shell of rose gold perforated by different patterns. Na prvi se pogled taj element doima vrlo jednostavno pa, ipak, skriva toliko različitih priča, kao što ih skriva i oblutak koji je rijeka oblikovala prenoseći ga po svom koritu tijekom mnogo dugih godina. Na neki način kolekcija Gaea simbolizira čovjeka kojeg su životno iskustvo i ljudi koje susreće oblikovali u jedinstvenu i neponovljivu osobnost. Following a great search for the perfect location, the 29-yearold air traffic controller and the 31-year-old pilot decided to spend the most important day of their life in Hotel Esplanade Nakon velike potrage za savršenim mjestom, 29-godišnja kontrolorka leta i 31-godišnji pilot odlučili su svoj najvažniji dan u životu provesti u hotelu Esplanade

After several years in a relationship and an engagement party held in the summer of 2017, Matea Dukić Gotal and Tin Dukić decided to get married. The 31-year-old pilot and the 29-year-old air traffic controller met in 2011 when Matea made a reservation for a scenic flight over Varaždin, during the Airshow held there. Her pilot was Tin. Since both of them work in aviation, their paths often crossed in the following year. One day Matea decided to contact Tin, but not in connection with work. It was about a scenic flight over Zagreb at night. They spent the time they were supposed to be in the airplane having numerous coffees until late in the evening, which is when they realised that in addition to work they had a lot in common. After this evening they started dating and were in a relationship for six years. This changed last year when Tin decided to take a step further and ask Matea to marry him. Matea said the fateful yes and so the planning of a perfect wedding started immediately. 94 | E S P LA N A DE V IEW

Matea Dukić Gotal i Tin Dukić nakon višegodišnje veze i zaruka održanih u ljeto 2017. nedavno su uplovili u bračnu luku. Tridesetjednogodišnji pilot i dvadesetdevetogodišnja kontrolorka leta upoznali su se još 2011., kad je Matea za vrijeme Airshowa uplatila panoramski let u Varaždinu. Njezin pilot bio je upravo Tin. Budući da su oboje u istoj djelatnosti – avijaciji, sljedećih godinu dana putevi su im se često presijecali. Matea je pak jednom odlučila kontaktirati Tina nevezano uz posao – zbog noćnog panoramskog leta iznad Zagreba. Umjesto u avionu, vrijeme su proveli na kavi do kasnih noćnih sati i shvatili kako ih osim posla veže još štošta zajedničkog. Nakon te večeri započeli su vezu koja je trajala šest godina, a prošle je godine Tin odlučio napraviti korak dalje i zaprositi svoju odabranicu. Matea je, dakako, pristala te je planiranje savršenog vjenčanja moglo odmah početi.

The bride and groom first wanted to have their wedding in Opatija in the company of their loved ones and friends. It was supposed to be a small intimate wedding, but the search for a perfect venue took them from Opatija to Zagreb. Although there are many wedding venues in Zagreb, the bride and groom did not quite like any of them and the enthusiasm for the wedding party started to wane. During the entire time of the search, Matea’s parents and Tin tried to persuade Matea to look at Hotel Esplanade. “At that time the Esplanade seemed unattainable. Only when I could not find what I wanted in the entire city of Zagreb did I finally decide to go to the Esplanade,” Matea remembers. She was not sorry because as soon as they entered the hotel, they knew that their wedding party had to take place in this old beauty of a building. “We had a meeting with Mrs Monika Pustaj, who showed us around the hotel. Talking to the Esplanade staff was refreshingly different,” Matea and Tin remember. Since the number of people they wanted to invite was small, at first they picked the room called Paris. However, they finally decided that although the number of people they were inviting was small, they would choose a large room – the Emerald Room for which the required number of guests is usually a minimum of 80. “I remember the moment when Mrs Pustaj opened the door to the Emerald Room. I was speechless. I was astonished by how beautiful the it was. After I saw it, I knew it was ideal for Tin and me because it had surpassed all my expectations,” Matea said. It is interesting that Matea had set out to find a perfect photographer even before choosing the venue. She wanted Spinnaker Graphics to photograph their wedding and she scheduled the wedding when they had an opening. So the wedding was set for 29 June 2018. After they had found the perfect venue and the perfect photographer, the rest of the wedding plans were easy. The bride and groom owe a debt of gratitude with regard to the organisation of the event to Mr Josip Friščić, who listened to all their ideas and implemented them while at the same time directing them along the right path.

Mladenci su svoje vjenčanje iz snova željeli održati u Opatiji, u krugu svojih najdražih. Trebalo je to biti malo intimno vjenčanje, no potraga za savršenom dvoranom ipak se iz Opatije preselila u Zagreb. Iako u Zagrebu ima mnogo svadbenih dvorana, ovom mladom bračnom paru niti jedna nije odgovarala te je entuzijazam lagano počeo opadati. Cijelo vrijeme potrage za dvoranom, Mateu su roditelji i suprug nagovarali da pogleda hotel Esplanade. – Tada mi se Esplanada činila nedostižnom. Tek kad u cijelom Zagrebu nisam našla ono što sam željela, odlučila sam ipak otići na sastank u Esplanadu – prisjetila se Matea. I nije požalila jer čim su ušetali u hotel, znali su da se njihovo svadbeno slavlje mora održati u ovoj gradskoj ljepotici. – Sastanak smo zakazali s gospođom Monikom Pustaj koja nas je povela u razgledavanje hotela. Razgovor s osobljem Esplanade za nas je bio pravo osvježenje – kažu Matea i Tin. S obzirom na mali broj uzvanika, isprva su razmišljali o dvorani Pariz. Međutim, mladenci su ipak željeli da njihova svadba, iako s malim brojem ljudi, bude u većoj dvorani – Smaragdnoj, za čiji je najam najčešće potrebno najmanje osamdeset uzvanika. – Sjećam se trenutka kad je gospođa Pustaj otvorila vrata Smaragdne dvorane. Ostala sam bez teksta. Bila sam zapanjena koliko je ta dvorana očaravajuća. I nakon što sam je vidjela uživo, znala sam da je idealna za Tina i mene jer je nadmašila sva moja očekivanja – rekla je Matea. Zanimljivo je kako je još prije potrage za dvoranom Matea krenula u potragu za savršenim fotografom. Željela je da njihov dan ovjekovječi studio Spinnaker Graphics, čijem je slobodnom terminu prilagodila i cijelu svadbu. Stoga je vjenčanje dogovoreno 29. lipnja 2018. Nakon što su pronašli savršenu dvoranu i fotografa, ostatak planiranja vjenčanja protekao je glatko. Veliku zahvalu za pomoć oko organizacije mladenci su uputili gospodinu Josipu Friščiću koji je, kako kažu, poslušao i realizirao sve njihove ideje, ali ih i usmjerio na pravi put.

Matea and Tin arranged all the details of the menu with the head of the Esplanade’s patisserie Mrs Blaženka Pustaj. They decided to have the buffet menu and two wedding cakes, and they arranged a tasting session. Matea wanted a cake that the Esplanade did not have on offer for her most important day, but the Esplanade’s patisserie staff fulfilled her wish. “Unbelievably, they made all our wishes come true,” said the bride and groom.

Detalje oko jelovnika Tin i Matea dogovorili su s Blaženkom Pustaj, šeficom Esplanadine slastičarnice. Odluka je pala na buffet jelovnik i dvije svadbene torte, pa su zatim dogovorili i kušanje. Matea je za svoj najvažniji dan zaželjela tortu kakvu hotel nema u ponudi, no Esplanadin je tim slastičara ispunio njezinu želju.

Matea remembers that while waiting for the wedding ceremony to begin in her hotel suite, she felt an onset of a light panic attack. Fortunately, her father was there to calm her down. He was radiating happiness on the day and he escorted her to the registrar and the guests, and her future husband. The French bulldog Tima stole a tiny bit of attention because of her special task – she carried the wedding rings in a white dress. Following the ceremony, the bride and groom were the last to enter the Emerald Room. They had not seen the way it was decorated until that moment. “When we walked into the room, we were speechless.

Matea je, prisjeća se, čekajući u hotelskom apartmanu da započne ceremonija vjenčanja, osjetila lagani napad panike. Srećom, smirio ju je njezin otac koji je tog dana naprosto zračio srećom i otpratio je Mateu do matičarke i gostiju te budućeg supruga. Djelić pažnje ukrala je i Tima, francuski buldog, koja je imala poseban zadatak: odjevena u bijelu haljinicu, nosila je vjenčano prstenje. Kad je ceremonija završena, mladenci su posljednji, nakon svih uzvanika ušli u Smaragdnu dvoranu i prije tog trenutka nisu uspjeli vidjeti kako je ukrašena.

– Nevjerojatno, što smo poželjeli, sve su nam ostvarili – kazali su mladenci.

The lighting, the flowers, the atmosphere, it was all wonderful,” said the newlyweds. “I felt as if I was entering a fairy tale and we were the main characters. Our table was full of flowers, small candles and was covered with a golden tablecloth,” added Matea Rasvjeta, cvijeće, atmosfera, sve je bilo predivno – prisjetili su se. – Osjećala sam se kao da ulazim u bajku u kojoj smo mi glavni likovi. Naš stol bio je prepun cvijeća, svjećica i ukrašen zlatnim stolnjakom – dodala je Matea.

Most of the guests came from aviation and the Emerald Room was “flying high” that evening: tablecloth borders, decorations on the cakes and tables, thank-you notes, the seating arrangements… The decorative details in beige and golden colours with rose-coloured and off white flowers matched the beauty and richness that exemplify the Emerald room, even when it is not decorated. “Everything that evening was awash in beauty and luxury. This is exactly as I had imagined my wedding. Actually, it was much better than I had imagined it – simply magical, in a perfect place and with a perfect atmosphere,” remembers Matea. Since the majority of the guests were pilots or air traffic controllers, Matea and Tin wanted a photograph with all their dear colleagues and friends. “The photographer came and said that he had not expected that almost the entire wedding party would get up for a group photograph.” It was a unique opportunity to gather all the aviation people in one place. With regard to their wedding clothing, Matea and Tin decided to stick to the classics. Matea chose a beautiful wedding dress in beige with a train, covered in 98 | E S P LA N A DE V IEW

– Zakoračivši u dvoranu, ostali smo bez teksta. Rasvjeta, cvijeće, atmosfera, sve je bilo predivno – prisjetili su se. – Osjećala sam se kao da ulazim u bajku u kojoj smo mi glavni likovi. Naš stol bio je prepun cvijeća, svjećica i ukrašen zlatnim stolnjakom – dodala je Matea. Vjenčanje je bilo, dakako, u znaku aviona. Većina uzvanika dolazila je iz svijeta avijacije, pa je te večeri i Smaragdna dvorana bila „u letu“: manžete, dekoracija na torti i stolovima, zahvalnice, raspored sjedenja... Dekorativni detalji u bež i zlatnim nijansama zajedno s puder-ružičastim i prljavobijelim cvijećem savršeno su se uklopili u ljepotu i bogatstvo kojima odiše Smaragdna dvorana, čak i kad nije ukrašena. – Te je večeri sve odisalo ljepotom i luksuzom. I upravo tako sam zamišljala svoje vjenčanje. Zapravo, bilo je i još mnogo bolje od toga – jednostavno čarobno, na savršenom mjestu u savršenoj atmosferi – rekla je Matea. Budući da su uzvanici uglavnom bili piloti i kontrolori leta, Tin i Matea poželjeli su zajedničku fotografiju sa svojim dragim kolegama i prijateljima. Fotograf je prišao mladencima i u čudu rekao kako nije očekivao da će gotovo cijeli svatovi ustati od stola zbog grupne fotografije. Zaista, bila je to i jedinstvena prilika koja je okupila avijatičare na jednome mjestu. Kad je riječ o svadbenoj odjeći, Tin i Matea odlučili su

Tin decided to have special lighting for their wedding day, and the experts from Prolight obliged. DJ Igor Košćec was in charge of music and entertainment. He kept the guests on the floor until three o’clock in the morning. Considering that everything came to a happy ending, Matea remembers with a smile the accident that took place just before the first dance, when one of her friends accidentally caught the wedding dress with her shoe after which the button holding the train broke off. Matea was quite upset, but the thing was solved in two minutes when one of the hotel’s hostesses came with a needle and thread and sowed the button back on. There was one more thing that the bride and groom worried about – their first dance. They had not had enough time to perfect the dance moves, but they managed to finish the dance in style. Although there were many small problems the couple experienced on their wedding day, in the end everything came out - just perfect. “Although several months have passed since our wedding, people still talk about it and the overall impression was more than excellent. The food, the staff, the venue, everything was as we had wanted it,” added the Dukić couple. “We couldn’t have chosen anything better for the most important day of our life,” concluded Matea.

Tin je za njihov svečani dan odlučio postaviti i specijalnu rasvjetu, za što je angažirao stručnjake iz Prolight rasvjete. Za glazbu i vođenje programa bio je zadužen DJ Igor Koščec koji je goste zadržao na podiju do tri sata ujutro. S obzirom na to da je na kraju sve dobro završilo, Matea se danas s osmijehom prisjetila nezgode koja se dogodila upravo prije prvog plesa, kad je jedna od njezinih prijateljica slučajno zapela za vjenčanicu, pa je puknulo dugme koje je držalo šlep. Matea se uzrujala, ali je stvar spašena već za dvije minute, kad je stigla domaćica iz hotela i iglom i koncem riješila problem. Još je nešto mučilo mladence: njihov prvi ples. Naime, nisu imali dovoljno vremena za uvježbavanje koreografije, no prvi su ples ipak odradili posve solidno. Uz ovakve uobičajene „probleme“ koje proživljavaju parovi na dan vjenčanja, na kraju ipak sve završi onako kako i treba biti – savršeno. – Iako je prošlo nekoliko mjeseci od naše svadbe, o njoj se još uvijek govori, a sveukupni dojam bio je više nego odličan. Hrana, osoblje, ambijent, ma sve je bilo onako kako smo i priželjkivali – ističe bračni par Dukić. – Nismo mogli bolje izabrati za naš najvažniji dan u životu – zaključila je Matea.

This Advent, a sense of the atmosphere of past holiday seasons printed on small cards is provided by the Museum of Arts and Crafts in an exhibition of Christmas and New Year greetings cards, which will run from 11 December 2018 to 27 January 2019. Dašak ozračja nekih davnih blagdana ispisanih na malim kartolinama ovog adventa pripremio je Muzej za umjetnost i obrt na izložbi božićnih i novogodišnjih čestitki, koja je otvorena od 11. prosinca 2018. do 27. siječnja 2019.

Entitled “THE NEXT ONE WILL BE BETTER!” Greetings Cards from the Museum of Arts and Crafts, this year’s Advent exhibition is dedicated to the sending of best wishes and the custom of exchanging written greetings cards in Croatia from the end of the 19th century right up to today and the appearance of e-cards. Through more than 400 examples of greetings cards, it is shown how there has been a change in this form of politeness and seasonal tradition, together with the messages exchanged between friends, lovers, relatives, artists, business partners, institutions and others.

Pod nazivom „…SLJEDEĆA ĆE BITI BOLJA!“ Čestitka iz MUO, ovogodišnja adventska izložba posvećena je čestitanju i običaju slanja pisanih čestitki, upravo onakvih kakve su se u Hrvatskoj razmjenjivale od kraja 19. stoljeća gotovo do danas i pojave e-mail čestitki. Na više od 400 primjera blagdanskih čestitki prikazano je kako se mijenjao ovaj nezaobilazan element uljudnog ponašanja i blagdanske tradicije s porukama koje su jedni drugima upućivali prijatelji, zaljubljeni, rodbina, umjetnici, poslovni partneri, institucije i drugi.

From the photographic portraits on the greetings cards of the early 20th century to later witty experiments with different types of printing and paper, greetings cards have often transcended their small format and short life spans. Many leading figures in Croatian art and design ventured into producing greetings cards, such as Rudolf Mosinger, Atelier Tri, Ivan Picelj, Milan Vulpe, Aleksandar Srnec, Mihajl Arsovski and Marija Kalentić. New Year greetings were also extended to their fellow citizens by the legendary cartoonist ‘Grga’ Ico Voljevica and the immortal cartoon character Professor Balthazar (on behalf of Zagreb Film). Whether it is Christmas celebrations or New Year greetings, December sees the sending of large numbers of greetings cards with best wishes for the holiday season and New Year. The most beautiful of these, the serious and frivolous, the dignified and ironic, those full of best wishes and those with dark humour, which have been kept by the Museum of Arts and Crafts in its Old and New Photographs Collection, and in its Graphic Design Collection are exhibited in a new light by transforming them into the stories and pictures of holiday seasons gone by. 104 | E S P LA N A DE V IEW

The National At its opening back in 1925, the Hotel Esplanade attracted many well-known guests, and things have stayed this way ever since. Many famous people from both Croatia and abroad choose the Esplanade as their temporary home during the warm summer months. The beauty of Croatia, business meetings, conferences or simply enjoying the rich history of the destination and the Hotel Esplanade are all good reasons for coming. Did you know that the first female professional journalist, campaigner for women’s rights, and political activist Marija Jurić Zagorka spent some time between the two world wars living in the Hotel Esplanade? She was known for her unconventional methods of searching for inspiration, and would often sit blindfolded in the middle of the room in order to faithfully summon up fantastic scenes, which would then be written down by her assistants. Did you know that Le Bistro, the first French-style bistro in Croatia, was opened in 1986? With their rich voices, the three young men have rightly been called the successors to the Three Tenors. They began their career back in 2009 as teenagers on the Italian talent show Ti lascio una canzone (“I’m Leaving You a Song”). They established their status as a global sensation right from the start with their performances on the biggest TV shows like American Idol, Good Morning America, The Tonight Show, America’s Got Talent, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In their first week in the album charts, they reached number ten on the Billboard 200, and the dazzling success of their debut launched them to the very top of the music industry. This was confirmed by two nominations for Latin Grammy Awards for best new artist and best album. To date, they have released five albums, including collaborations with Plácido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti, and have been on as many as 11 tours. Već u prvom tjednu dospjeli su na deseto mjesto Billboarda 200 – popisa najboljih albuma, a vrtoglavi uspjeh njihova prvijenca lansirao ih je u vrh glazbene industrije. Potvrda su dvije nominacije za latinoamerički Grammy za najboljeg novog izvođača i najbolji album. Objavili su pet albuma, na kojima su surađivali s Plácidom Domingom i Erosom Ramazzottijem, te odradili čak 11 turneja.

THEATRE: THE NUTCRACKER Orašar Dec 2018 – Jan 2019 - Croatian National Theatre Hrvatsko narodno kazalište In the one hundred and twenty years since its first performance, the popularity of The Nutcracker has grown, and today it is the most performed ballet in the world, and there is probably no generation of youngsters who did not grow up with it. The wonderful music of Tchaikovsky was fully exploited by the great choreographer of the Imperial Theatres Marius Petipa, who as a leading ballet master gave the composer the guidelines for creating the musical template. The story of a young girl called Clara, who finds an unusual gift beneath the Christmas tree in the shape of wooden nutcracker with whom she experiences wonderful adventures in an imaginary world, was taken from ETA Hoffmann and adapted by Dumas the Elder. During December and January, you can watch a performance of this ballet for which tickets in Zagreb are always in demand. U sto dvadeset godina, koliko je proteklo od praizvedbe Orašara, njegova popularnost kod publike stalno je rasla i danas je to najizvođeniji balet na svijetu te vjerojatno ne postoji nijedna generacija mladih koja nije odrasla uz njega. Prekrasnu glazbu Čajkovskoga potpuno je iskoristio veliki koreograf Carskih ruskih kazališta Marius Petipa koji je kao vrhunski baletni znalac skladatelju davao smjernice za stvaranje glazbenog predloška. Priča o djevojčici Klari koja ispod bora pronalazi nesvakidašnji dar, drvenog orašara kojim se razbijaju orasi, te s njim proživi čudesne dogodovštine u izmaštanu svijetu preuzeta je od E. T. A. FESTIVALS: 13th Zagreb VINOcom 23 and 24 Nov 2018 - Hotel Esplanade The 13th Zagreb VINOcom is an international wine and culinary festival that is held annually at the Hotel Esplanade in Zagreb. The festival opens on 23 November at 11 o’clock, and is open on both Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00. The festival will take place on the ground floor of the hotel, where the produce of both local and foreign exhibitors will be displayed. During the festival, various workshops will also be held. 13. Zagreb VINOcom 2018. međunarodni je festival vina i kulinarstva, koji se već tradicionalno održava u hotelu Esplanade Zagreb. Festival se otvara 23. studenoga u 11 sati, a oba dana, petak i subotu, otvoren je od 11 do 18 sati. Festival se održava u prizemlju hotela, gdje su izloženi proizvodi i domaćih i stranih izlagača, a za vrijeme Festivala održavaju se i razne zanimljive radionice.
