Every year, the Magic Bus Houston Gala celebrates your generosity and the impact your support has on the lives of children and youth across India.

Last year, we significantly deepened our impact with each child and made a commitment to work on attainment in the classroom in addition to our existing community projects.

Every child on our programme will be with us for seven years and we will provide them with all the right interventions that are needed to move them out of poverty. So a child in poverty will join our programme at 12 and will leave at 18 with a job in the formal sector.

We understand that we can’t do this alone. We are therefore partnering with schools, other non-profits, communities and local authorities like never before and encouraging a collective approach to impact.

I am continually inspired by the young participants on the programme. I meet young girls who are now not just financially independent but are also supporting their families and driving changes in generational attitudes with their tenacity and confidence. I meet boys who have evolved into role models and are looked upon by the community as guardians of hope. I meet mothers who are filled with pride as they talk about the success of their children In a week’s work at Magic Bus, there are about 12,000 people involved in delivering our programmes. We are lucky we see and touch this change every day and we are all too aware that this doesn’t happen without the trust and confidence you provide us to do this work. Thank you so much.

FOUNDER’S STORY Magic Bus has over 1,500 employees spread across India, the US and UK. In 1999, Matthew Spacie landed in Mumbai to run India’s largest travel agency, Cox and Kings.

Matthew played rugby in the evenings and noticed a group of boys living across the street. One day, he called them over to join in on the game and over the next few months Matthew became their coach – in rugby and in life.

Being a part of a team gave these boys a sense of worth and inspired them to aim higher. Matthew recognized the power of mentorship and aspiration and encouraged the boys to become mentors to younger children in their own communities.

This evolved into Magic Bus, which today is one of the world’s highest-impact, lowcost scalable programs in India.

AMIT BHANDARI, CHAIRMAN MAGIC BUS USA Amit Bhandari is the founder and sole stakeholder in BioUrja Trading, LLC and its affiliated companies. Amit founded BioUrja Trading, LLC and LogiBio, LLC in the fall of 2006, concentrating on the supply of physical ethanol to oil majors, and independent refiners. In 2012, Amit established West Plains, LLC which expanded BioUrja group’s commodity trading interests to grains. Recently BioUrja Group has been expanding and has acquired Hamilton Metals, BioUrja New Town Terminal, and BioUrja Port Allen Terminal.

MATTHEW SPACIE, MBE Formerly Chief Operating Officer of Cox and Kings and Founder of Cleartrip.com, Matthew comes with extensive experience in senior positions within the corporate sector and an intuitive understanding of the needs of the development sector.

In 1999, Matthew established Magic Bus, and he has grown the organization from volunteers conducting informal rugby sessions and one-off outdoor camps for disadvantaged children, into a premier organization working in the area of mentoring less privileged children from childhood to livelihood. Matthew has been elected an Ashoka Fellow, a TED Fellow and more recently an ACSEP Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (ACSEP) Fellow. In 2007, he was awarded an MBE for services to children in the Commonwealth.
