Kapil Dev, also known as the Haryana Hurricane, is Magic Bus’ Guest of Honor for its 5th Annual Gala in Houston. An oustanding fast bowler, Kapil Dev is the only cricketer to have scored over 5,000 runs and taken more than 400 wickets in International Test Cricket. He is known for his pride, passion, and will to win. Kapil Dev’s outstanding leadership during his time as the Indian cricket captain is a legacy in

itself. His achievements have earned him numerous accolades, such as the Padma Bhushan award in 1991. Captain of the Indian cricket team that first won the World Cup in 1983, Kapil Dev, is every young sportsperson’s idol. We’re humbled to have him as Magic Bus’ Guest of Honor for its 5th Annual Gala in Houston.

MANUSHI CHHILLAR Miss World 2017

Manushi Chillar was crowned Miss World in 2017, bringing back the crown to India after 17 long years. She is the sixth representative of India to have won the title, and we are delighted to have her as Magic Bus’ Guest of Honor for the 5th Annual Houston Gala. Born in 1997, Manushi was brought up in New Delhi, with her parents and two siblings.

More than a symbol of beauty, Manushi is an intelligent and driven young woman,

as she pursues her medical degree at the Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College in Sonipat.

During the course of her Miss World reign, Manushi embarked on a “Beauty for Purpose” tour, advocating for numerous social causes such as girls rights, child health, environmental issues and so on.

Manushi still devotes time supporting causes that are dear to her heart, and we are proud to have her amongst us for Magic Bus’ Houston Gala.

DEVAL SANGHAVI Partner and Co-Founder Dasra

A couple of years into his first job at Morgan Stanley in New York, Deval realized he wanted to be in India, to focus on the lives of the many millions that live without dignity and equity. So the Texas-born investment banker packed up, came to Mumbai, and co-founded Dasra.

Deval leads Dasra’s strategic philanthropy efforts, and provides foreign and domestic philanthropists with informed investment strategies for the social sector – keeping human lives at the center of all of its thinking. Since 1999, he has directed over USD 72 million to the Indian social sector; incubated and launched the Dasra Philanthropy Forum and Dasra Philanthropy Week; initiated the Dasra Giving

Circle, India’s largest collaborative giving platform; and launched the Dasra Changemakers program, a peer-led learning platform aimed at inspiring philanthropists to take bold action to solve some of India’s most pressing problems.

Deval holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a dual Honor’s degree in Business and Finance from the University of Texas, Austin, is a Cordes Fellow, and a founding board member of Magic Bus and Villgro. In 2014, he was awarded the Forbes Philanthropy Award in the ‘Crossover Leaders’ category for successfully transitioning from investment banking to the non-profit sector.

Last year alone, at the Magic Bus Houston Benefit Dinner, your support helped 36,000 children to begin their journey out of poverty. Year on year, you have helped Magic Bus increase its sphere of influence by being its strongest ambassadors.

There is still a lot of tough ground to cover before we reach our goal of a poverty-free India for children and young people. So, keep walking with us.

About Magic Bus WHAT WE DO Founded in 1999 by Matthew Spacie, Magic Bus works with children and young people living in poverty in India, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods.

Children on the Magic Bus program complete school, and go on to enroll in vocational institutes or colleges. They successfully fend off destabilizers such as child marriage and child labour and become first-generation salary earners.

Our youth-centered Livelihood Program connects the aspirations and potential of young people to available market opportunities. We build their employability skills and map job potential based on individual strengths and mobility.

Magic Bus works with support structures: parents, the community at large and local institutions to ensure results in social, emotional and economic well-being for all young people living in that area. Our approach mobilizes the entire ecosystem available to the child or young person to create transformational change in their lives.

Magic Bus works in 22 States and 77 districts in India

Less than 5% of girls on our program drop out of school by Class 8 (age 14). In India, 40% of girls drop out of school by Class 8.

In the last one year, we have impacted a total of 375, 594 children and 10,000 young people.

95% of girls on our program do not get married before the age of 18. In India, 30% girls are married before the legal age of 18 years.

79% of young people trained in our Livelihood Program are placed in salaried work.

MAGIC BUS OPERATIONS

Magic Bus has over 1,500 employees spread across India, the US and UK. In 1999, Matthew Spacie landed in Mumbai to run India’s largest travel agency, Cox and Kings. Matthew played rugby in the evenings and noticed a group of boys living across the street. One day, he called them over to join in on the game and over the next few months Matthew became their coach – in rugby and in life.

Magic Bus is headquartered in Mumbai with regional offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and local program offices in 22 states.

We have 25 Livelihood Centers across India where we provide employability training to youth.

Magic Bus has begun operations in Nepal, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

Our international fundraising offices include Singapore, London, New York and Houston.

Being a part of a team gave these boys a sense of worth and inspired them to aim higher. Matthew recognized the power of mentorship and aspiration and encouraged the boys to become mentors to younger children in their own communities. This evolved into Magic Bus, which today is one of the world’s highest-impact, low-cost scalable programs in India.

AMIT BHANDARI, CHAIRMAN MAGIC BUS USA Amit Bhandari is the founder and sole stakeholder in BioUrja Trading, LLC and its affiliated companies. Amit founded BioUrja Trading, LLC and LogiBio, LLC in the fall of 2006, concentrating on the supply of physical ethanol to oil majors, and independent refiners. In 2012, Amit established West Plains, LLC which expanded BioUrja group’s commodity trading interests to grains. Recently BioUrja Group has been expanding and has acquired Hamilton Metals, BioUrja New Town Terminal, and BioUrja Port Allen Terminal.

Prior to founding BioUrja, Amit worked for ExxonMobil Corporation for over 13 years and was solely responsible for the purchase of over 10% of the national volume of ethanol.

In addition to his business activities, Amit also is actively engaged with various charities.

RAM SHRIRAM A technology industry insider for over 25 years, Ram has worked in companies large and small from Netscape to Amazon. He is a Board Member for Google and started Sherpalo Venture Capital in 2000 with the goal of applying his wealth of operating and company building experience to promising early stage ventures. Ram’s knowledge of and advice on issues ranging from raising venture capital, key management hiring, making the right product choices and defining and adapting the business model to changing market conditions can help you to secure early customer wins, build momentum from a standing start, and generate international growth. Ram also sits on the board of Naukri.com, a leading Indian job-seeker website.

MATTHEW SPACIE, MBE Formerly Chief Operating Officer of Cox and Kings and Founder of Cleartrip. com, Matthew comes with extensive experience in senior positions within the corporate sector and an intuitive understanding of the needs of the development sector.

In 1999, Matthew established Magic Bus, and he has grown the organization from volunteers conducting informal rugby sessions and one-off outdoor camps for disadvantaged children, into a premier organization working in the area of mentoring less privileged children from childhood to livelihood. Matthew has been elected an Ashoka Fellow, a TED Fellow and more recently an ACSEP Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (ACSEP) Fellow. In 2007, he was awarded an MBE for services to children in the Commonwealth.
