Parish News August 2025 part 2

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION (NCI) BRANCASTER

This month has been exceptionally busy for NCI Brancaster. The Coastwatchers were informed by radio that a trawler had broken down off the coast: they informed HM Coastguard, but fortunately the boat was towed back to harbour by another trawler.

It is of deep concern to station staff that the spit to the north of the station has become a serious hazard as it has grown larger. On 21st June the beach was exceptionally busy, and between twenty and thirty people were caught on the spit by an incoming tide. The RNLI hovercraft from Hunstanton and the lifeboat from Wells were called and, under supervision, all the people stranded were able to wade ashore. NCI Brancaster is in discussion with the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club and the National Trust on measures that can be taken to warn beach users of the dangers.

Several NCI Brancaster station volunteers took part in a joint training exercise with RNLI Hunstanton, in which station staff directed RNLI craft to rescue people in difficulty (represented by a lifejacket thrown overboard) using VHF radio. This proved to be an extremely worthwhile event, and presages other training opportunities between the two volunteer services in future.

Station staff spent an afternoon at the former RAF West Raynham, looking at the impressive work being done by the volunteers there to develop part of the site to support service veterans. Station Manager John A also represented NCI Norfolk at a reception at Norwich Castle to mark the service of the outgoing Chair of Norfolk County Council, Councillor Stuart Dark MBE.

The station welcomes two new volunteers, Mandy and Peter, and we wish them well in their training. If you would like more information on NCI Brancaster, or to find out more about becoming a volunteer, please contact Richard Burrows, Deputy Station Manager and Watchkeeper on 07535 612777. You can also find us on Facebook, if you search NCI Brancaster.
