At the heart of the sacred city of Mathura stands Shri Bhuteshwar Mahadev, revered as the guardian deity (Kshetrapal) of the region. According to the Shiv Purana, Bhuteshwar Mahadev is considered the representative form of Shri Kedarnath Mahadev among the twelve Jyotirlingas.
Mythological accounts state that Lord Shiva blessed Mother Yashoda with a divine promise to protect the child form of Lord Krishna. In fulfillment of that vow, Bhuteshwar Mahadev was established as the protector of the sacred 84-kos (approx. 252 km) region of Braj.
This ancient temple is not just a center of religious devotion but also a symbol of Braj’s spiritual heritage and vibrant culture. Located nearby is the temple of Patal Devi, which was once worshipped by the tyrant King Kansa, further enriching the mythological significance of the area.
Among the four Mahadev temples established by Shri Vajranabh (Lord Krishna’s greatgrandson), Bhuteshwar Mahadev holds a prominent place. The other three are Kameshwar in Kamvan, Chakreshwar in Govardhan, and Gopeshwar in Vrindavan— together forming the spiritual backbone of the Braj region.
In the year 2018, Braj Vikas Trust, a charitable organization dedicated to the social, spiritual, and cultural revival of the Braj region, undertook the grand renovation and beautification of Shri Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple, Mathura. This transformation not only preserved the temple's ancient architecture but also introduced modern amenities, making it a comfortable and serene space for devotees and pilgrims.
Today, the temple stands as a powerful symbol of faith, tradition, and revival. It reflects the timeless essence of Braj, enriched through the noble efforts of Braj Vikas Trust—an inspiring model of heritage preservation and spiritual service for the generations to come.
