CENTER FOR BRAINHEALTH IS A RESEARCH CENTER FOCUSED ON COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE. RESEARCH RESULTS ARE PROVIDED FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. PAST STUDY RESULTS DO NOT CONSTITUTE A PROMISE OR GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS.
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS AND A FUTURE OF LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES
Think back to 1999 and recall what you knew about brain health. Was it something you ever thought about or even heard of? Over the past 25 years, Center for BrainHealth has led a growing global movement to take charge of our most vital organ.
Our remarkable researchers have published over 1,000 peer-reviewed studies documenting how we can enhance, preserve, and restore brain health. We have collaborated with more than 500 scientists, clinicians, and other researchers to elevate the study of brain health at universities and medical institutions worldwide. Adding to this momentum, our public engagements have gone global through unprecedented research efforts like The BrainHealth Project and far-reaching renowned speakers, expert lectures and seminars in person and virtually to people around the globe.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without your support. It is fitting during this milestone year that we have reached the very tip of our ambitious $50 million goal for the Limitless BrainHealth campaign, and will certainly surpass it well before the campaign concludes in 2025.
The impact of your generosity propels us upward to achieve bolder goals every day –an energy that will grow tenfold+ well into our next quarter-century. As you read this silver anniversary report, embrace with us the immense gratitude for what you have made possible and inspired – a limitless future of putting BrainHealth front and center for our world to thrive.
Sincerely,
Sandra Bond Chapman, PhD Founder and Chief Director
I am honored and admittedly fortunate to serve as board chair during Center for BrainHealth’s 25th year. From the beginning, Dr. Sandi Chapman has inspired many volunteers like me with her vision for a new healthcare revolution focusing on the
This year’s annual report is filled with examples of this vision at work. Center for BrainHealth is not just advancing the science of improving the use and care of our brains, they are applying it in schools, neighborhoods, and businesses with proven results. The outcomes of better brain health benefit everyone through increased productivity, comprehension, clarity, and creativity while reducing anxiety, stress, depression, and other harmful influences on the brain. Pardon the pun, but getting behind an effort like this is a no-brainer.
Longtime BrainHealth supporters like me have seen these results on school children, veterans and first responders, caregivers, families, and people just looking to improve their well-being. Thank you for helping make Dr. Chapman’s inspiring vision a reality. The world needs more of what Center for BrainHealth has brought us in its first 25 years.
Sincerely,

RECORD-SETTING SUPPORT FOR NEW SCIENTISTS
The Friends of BrainHealth donor circle is dedicated to supporting emerging researchers with grants to fund innovative new studies. The most recent campaign set a new fundraising record of more than $600,000 and was led by co-chairs Nikki Kapioltas and Chad Cook, Jolie and Bart Humphrey, Josey and Craig Kennington, and Sarah and Will Schoellkopf.
Donors have the opportunity to attend the annual Ramona Jones Friends of BrainHealth Scientist Selection Luncheon, where finalists selected by a Scientist Selection Committee of Friends of BrainHealth donors give a live pitch, “Shark Tank”-style, and audience members vote in real time to choose the winner.
It's an honor to serve on the Scientist Selection Committee and have the opportunity to review innovative research proposals that have been submitted by scientists who reside in the local community, and whose research could impact the world. Although not scientists by education, we have agreed to serve on the committee because of a passion and belief that anyone's brain health can be positively affected, at any point in the lifespan.

PREDICTING CHANGES IN INDIVIDUAL BRAIN HEALTH
Toward Precision Brain Health:
Accurate Prediction of a Cognitive Index Trajectory Using Neuroimaging Metrics
Cerebral Cortex – November 15, 2023
This unique imaging study highlights the holistic nature of cognitive health, well-being and connectedness.
Participants ages 21–65 completed sensorimotor tasks while undergoing two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, six months apart. Based on measures of the brain’s hemodynamic response functions, a machine learning model trained on brain
imaging data predicted significant improvements in cognitive brain health with 90% accuracy.
Findings suggest the uncharted potential of neuroimaging measures and machine learning metrics to track brain health in healthy individuals, as well as the need for increased attention on efforts to advance precision brain health.
Machine learning will allow us to take very large volumes of data and help identify the most important markers of brain health, validate indices, and choose targeted training strategies for individualized, precision brain health.

BRAIN HEALTH AT WORK MATTERS
We spend roughly 30% of our lives at work, making the workplace (in-person or virtual) a critical environment that can either build or deplete our brain health.
The BrainHealthy WorkplaceTM provides a science-backed path to help organizations boost employee brain power –making it possible to measure collective brain health in an organization, track aggregate changes and implement strategies to improve your most valuable asset.
Our initiative suggests four steps toward team brain health. Organizations can:
Try the 4-week Brain Gain Workplace Challenge.
Book an expert speaker.
Hold a training workshop.
Commit to nurturing a BrainHealthy Workplace culture.
Furthermore, our BrainomicsTM team is evaluating brain health and performance metrics that matter to corporate leaders. Quantifying the value of improved individual and organizational brain health fills a major gap in existing research, which focuses on the costs of poor mental health and maladaptive workplace practices. In addition, this new evidence arms corporate leaders with metrics that inform decision-making.
Early data point to a variety of measurable improvements:
Increase in engagement at work
Increase in mental energy to thrive throughout the day
Increase in productivity from single-tasking
We are grateful to like-minded organizations that are helping us better define what a BrainHealthy Workplace and culture should look like.
OPTIMIZING OUR HEALTHSPAN
Beyond talking about our lifespan, forward-thinking organizations are now referring to our “healthspan” in recognition that our health/quality of life matters as much as our longevity. Brain health is a critical determinant and so must be part of the equation.
In May 2024, Dr. Sandi Chapman (chief director) and Jennifer Zientz (director of programs and head of clinical services) spoke at the Navy SEAL Foundation Impact Forum about staying “left of boom” with proactive brain health throughout a career, during transitions and post-service.
As the only speakers talking about a longitudinal metric of brain health (our BrainHealth Index), the importance of empowerment and personal agency was not lost on the audience of active duty and veteran special ops command service members and their families.
The relevance and urgency was further evidenced by new connections forged with groups like Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF) and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, as well as Home Base (a collaboration between Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation, providing uniquely-tailored care to Veterans, Service Members and their Families.)
NEXT GENERATION AMBASSADORS
Established in 2021, the BrainHealth Scholars is a four-week summer internship program for undergraduate and graduate students.
The hands-on experience conveys the importance of brain health and everyday brain-healthy practices.
The goal is to develop next-generation ambassadors of brain health who will start promoting healthy practices early and get ahead of the game to optimize performance and well-being.
The 2024 Todd Platt BrainHealth Scholar program was made possible thanks to a gift generously made by Candy and Ike Brown.
Although I’m majoring in cognitive science, I didn’t know before this summer just how much agency we all have in shaping our brains and optimizing our brain performance. I am so excited to return to my college and share all that I’ve learned with my peers, so that they too can be the architects of their own brains!
Scholars bring their best questions as they test out the EEG cap and MRI simulator.
Scholars learn about imaging research from BrainHealth researchers and scientists.

CREATING A BRAINHEALTHY COMMUNITY
A second grant from The Addy Foundation is advancing the BrainHealthy Community initiative in southeast Dallas’ Pleasant Grove neighborhood. Launched in 2022, this is the first large-scale application of this model to provide underserved communities with brain-healthy programming and activities access.
According to Alicia Serrato, BrainHealthy Community Liaison, Pleasant Grove’s positive outcomes are helping pave the way to replicate this program in other neighborhoods. “The two keys to our success are visionary supporters, which we have in The Addy Foundation, and strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations already working in the community.”
Serrato started by engaging Community Does It, a local group already serving the area with mental health counseling, family educational and emotional support, as well as a community health resources network. More partnerships are now in place with Sylvia Mendez Elementary School, Pleasant Grove’s Salvation Army Center and Los Primos, a youth mentoring program.
BrainHealthy Community services include public series offerings on parenting and sleep, plus Charisma™ Virtual Social Coaching, a program that helps build social skills for children and adults struggling to interact with others due to anxiety, depression, ADHD or autism.
Support from The Addy Foundation is also helping Center for BrainHealth translate its program materials into Spanish, as more than 60 percent of Pleasant Grove residents are Hispanic.
Alicia Serrato leads a workshop with Community Does It, a grassroots organization focused on advancing community giving, impact and equity.
PARTNERSHIPS IN HIGHER EDUCATION REACH LEADERS OF TOMORROW
A $150,000 grant from The Meadows Foundation is fueling the expansion of a program to build BrainHealthy Campuses at Dallas College and UT Dallas. This initiative to empower next-generation leaders started last year through a generous grant from The Hoglund Foundation.
Students on both campuses will have access to a BrainHealth course and interactive workshops on stress management, sleep, and resilience to help them implement daily brain-healthy strategies. The program will also train faculty and staff to create a brain-healthy environment in the classroom.
Mental health is an essential aspect in the overall well-being of our students. Dallas College recognizes that our students are a whole person, not just students. We understand their academic success depends on their personal development and emotional health.

DEEPENING OUR PARTNERSHIP
WITH TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Since 2010, the Adolescent Reasoning Initiative™ has improved teacher training and student performance by focusing on how to learn rather than what to learn. The program has trained more than 600 teachers and impacted about 90,000 students at schools across Texas. Two highlights from the past year demonstrate this program’s continued impact, made possible through longtime BrainHealth supporters Sandy and Tommy Rouse.
The second annual Rouse Teacher Excellence Award was presented to Jeanne Sams, an eighth-grade teacher at S&S Consolidated Independent School District in Grayson County. The award recognizes an outstanding teacher for their depth of knowledge and successful implementation of Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Tactics (SMARTTM) brain training. According to Sams, “I feel with the students who have had SMART, I get deeper answers. They seem to have more stamina for reading longer passages and paying attention longer as well.”
An effort to get more Dallas ISD middle schools involved in the Adolescent Reasoning Initiative led to the Great Brain Gain Healthy Campus Contest, featuring a $10,000 prize. Program leaders partnered with DISD executives to select the winner, Sam Tasby Middle School in northeast Dallas.
Dr. Jacquelyn Gamino, director of the Adolescent Reasoning Initiative, said Tasby’s students and teachers would all benefit. “We have been partnering with schools for more than 15 years to provide tools that have been scientifically shown to enrich and strengthen the learning potential of students. Every student deserves the opportunity to receive cognitive empowerment through neuroscience-based solutions.”
Jeanne Sams has been using SMART tools in her English Language Arts class for the past 10 years.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO BETTER BRAIN HEALTH
Lifestyle medicine offers a personalized, collaborative and cost-effective way to give people more control over their own health, including brain health. Rooted in the teachings of Hippocrates, it has grown into a whole-person prescriptive medical specialty over the last few decades.
Research shows that applying therapeutic lifestyle interventions in conjunction with traditional medicine can help decrease overall medication usage and prevent – or even reverse – some chronic conditions. Whether focused on diet, exercise or sleep, lifestyle medicine practitioners can provide a literal prescription – which has been demonstrated to increase people’s likelihood of taking action.
Our 2024 Comets Giving Day campaign raised nearly $12,000 in seed funding to deliver holistic interventions through lifestyle medicine, including improved techniques for stress management, restorative sleep and nutrition shown to help optimize brain health across the lifespan.
As a physician, I originally thought you were doing a great job if you told a patient, ‘Okay I want you to eat well, sleep well, exercise well, connect well and manage stress well,’ but that's not enough. Lifestyle medicine takes proactive empowerment further.
Jane Wigginton, MD Medical Science Research Director
CELEBRATING OUR SILVER ANNIVERSARY
On April 24, 2024, about 200 of Center for BrainHealth’s most steadfast supporters gathered at Hôtel Swexan for the organization’s 25th anniversary gala.
The silver anniversary-themed event celebrated Dr. Sandi Chapman’s pioneering foresight and tremendous advances in the science and practice of proactive brain health over the last 25 years, and shared a vision for sparking the next global health revolution.
Debbie Francis, past BrainHealth Advisory Board chair and chair of the ongoing Limitless BrainHealth Campaign, oversaw preparations for the quarter-century celebration with assistance from a committee of longtime BrainHealth supporters – Robin Bagwell, Pat McEvoy, Shelle Sills, Jill Smith, and Andy Walsh.
INVESTING IN THE NEXT 25 YEARS
As we celebrate with you the successes of our first 25 years, we take pride in having positioned Center for BrainHealth to be at the forefront of discovering ways to optimize the brain “in health” and to holistically measure the upward trajectory of human brain performance across the age span.
During this milestone year, it is rewarding to reflect on everything that has been accomplished while also riveting to think about what will be celebrated after the next 25 years. Even more rapid, impactful brain health breakthroughs are coming. How do we know?
The market for digital brain assessment and training is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17-20% for the next 10 years. The military is prioritizing ways to optimize human performance from the neck up. Workplaces are embracing the idea of empowering teams with proactive brain health tools. Educational institutions from pre-K through graduate school are realizing the essential role of cognitive neuroscience and innovation in long-term outcomes.
We will continue leading the way, increasing our investment in several crucial areas: the intersection of brain health and sleep; leveraging neuroplasticity to optimize performance in the military; and hyper-enabling our assessment and training tools with AI and other neuro-tech solutions.
We are humbled by your confidence and generous support. Transformational opportunities are rapidly opening up to us, and with YOU, Center for BrainHealth can continue growing as a global hub for brain health solutions helping people thrive.
