BRAINHEALTH WEEK: CREATING AWARENESS, INSPIRING ACTION

Our third annual BrainHealth Week brought together members of the North Texas community to learn about brain health and celebrate the potential each one of us holds.

The first-of-its-kind Brain Recharge Station was unveiled, designed by Perkins&Will, the award-winning architecture firm designing UT Dallas’ new student union. The recharge station, located in the McDermott Library, reminds students to periodically unplug and take a brain break.

Student-led activities throughout the week kept the whole UTD campus engaged.

Some of the most pioneering, exciting experts in women’s brain health came together for the Empowering Women Through Brain Health conference, sharing cutting-edge discoveries that are closing the knowledge gap in understanding women's brain health.

The Accelerate! Breakthroughs in Brain Performance summit showcased innovative interventions and technologies that support the pursuit for peak performance – from sports and military to students and professionals across all fields.

A grant from the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture ignited the unforgettable art event Neuroscapes: Mapping the Mind Through Photography – an evening of culture, community and creativity, exploring how art shapes our understanding of brain health.

The week culminated with an annual favorite, Family Fair – featuring a brain-themed treasure hunt, games and interactive moments, as well as engaging, kid-friendly speakers.

Thank you to our sponsors, community partners and volunteers for wiring the connections that powered BrainHealth Week 2025!

OUR TAKEAWAYS FROM THE WEEK

1

Each of us can gain agency over our own brain health.

90% of people know the brain can change, but only 30% know how to take agency over their own brain health. Each year during BrainHealth Week, leaders at Center for BrainHealth call for a “brain fitness revolution” — sharing simple steps that empower communities to strengthen brain fitness through daily habits that make a difference.

2

Neuroplasticity is possible at every life stage.

The brain is capable of high levels of neuroplasticity in its second, third, fourth decade, and beyond, in ways that researchers are just beginning to unravel. The brain has uncharted potential to improve across the lifespan — with gains in confidence leading to start taking better care of our brain health.

3

Making brain gains is about "you against you."

The challenge is to outperform ourselves, and adopting a “can do” mindset is essential. Practicing habits that foster self-belief makes a transformative difference — each small step helps us become more confident, with gains in confidence leading to new opportunities to learn and thrive.

4

Measuring brain health motivates improvement.

If we cannot measure brain health, we cannot measure improvements. New studies quantify how people who follow brain-healthy strategies demonstrate continuous improvement regardless of where they start. Our BrainHealth Index is empowering today’s research to capture and continue the positive effects of our evidence-based brain health strategies.

5

Collaboration is essential to advance brain performance.

Precision brain health requires working across disciplines, learning the best ways to serve brain health in different contexts. Emerging research focused on the potential of the female brain may unlock understanding about brain science that could benefit all of humanity.

Technology can empower precision brain health.

We are on the cusp of a neuro-technology revolution, bringing us closer than ever to sharing the keys to precision brain health. Having accessible and easy-to-use tools is essential to harnessing the agency all of us have — to take steps that can promote, protect and preserve our brain health across the lifespan.

Making time to appreciate art is good for brain health.

Focusing on a work of art helps us practice new ways of seeing. When we take time to carefully observe art and explore creative ways of thinking, we engage the brain in one of its most fundamental learning processes.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR RESEARCHERS

We demonstrated improvements in attention, working memory, and speed of processing from light-based brain stimulation . This promising technology has potential for individuals undergoing recovery from a brain injury or early-stage dementia.

Dan Krawczyk, PhD

Our Brainomics research with Momentous School is revealing the lifelong economic benefits of teaching students how to optimize their brain performance early on. A low-cost, proactive approach to building brain health can yield extraordinary returns in personal thriving and economic trajectories.

The Filbey Lab published a widely recognized study demonstrating that the e ects of cannabis on memory are mediated by its impact on sleep — an important finding covered by media like the Dallas Morning News. Additionally, we were awarded funding by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to investigate how group therapy works in the brain to treat substance use.

Francesca Filbey, PhD

This spring I completed my PhD, and now I am continuing my work as the Donald Bloom Mental Health Promotion Fellow to develop and deliver evidence-based brain health tools and education to promote mental wellness across communities.

Sarah Laane, PhD, CCC-SLP

This year we are nearing 1,000 brain imaging sessions as part of our landmark study, The BrainHealth Project . The biomarkers obtained will allow us to measure and track the brain’s state, with the goal of optimizing brain health for individuals across the lifespan.

Jeffrey Spence, PhD

Using the Education Research Center’s databases, the Adolescent Reasoning Initiative team found that students who received SMART cognitive training during middle school are passing required high school state exams at a higher rate. This suggests they are more likely to graduate on time, which may also yield higher lifetime earnings.

It is encouraging that the Lancet report found 45% of dementia risks could be preventable. This underscores the importance of lifelong brain health — a focus our research helps advance.

We continue to advance the BrainHealth Index toward the goal of becoming a gold-standard measure of brain health, having conducted over 30,000 online assessments to date. Its multidimensional approach is filling a critical gap in the field, sparking collaborations with investigators who are seeking to integrate the Index into their clinical trials.

Lori Cook, PhD, CCC-SLP

We recently published a paper showing that by using existing functional neuroimaging data we can develop a model to predict brain health in new individuals without having to image them. Not only does neuroimaging data help us characterize brain health, it also can help us improve models that can be scaled to support many individuals.

Calhoun, PhD

Rackley, MS, CCC-SLP

2025 has been a year of accomplishments for the Neuropsychometric Research Lab. New PhD and masters’ level students have joined to support our current projects, which has resulted in the submission of six scientific papers and a newly awarded grant to study neurocognitive aging

Bart Rypma, PhD

Our research continues to demonstrate that the SMART training protocol makes a meaningful di erence in real-world settings. In collaboration with the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, we found that our strategy training for warfighters led to measurable cognitive gains — a cost-e ective means of achieving more, compared to traditional approaches. We are proud of this work and hope it may open new possibilities for enhancing military readiness.

The Sammons BrainHealth Imaging Center continued to gain traction with researchers from UT Dallas and beyond, exceeding budget projections this year. Our novel work includes becoming one of the few imaging centers in the country to perform hyper-scanning, a technique involving the simultaneous recording of brain activity from two individuals.

With three manuscripts currently under review and other innovative pilot research underway, we are including more lifestyle and health information in our research because it is such a critical aspect of the holistic nature of brain health and one’s ability to thrive in life.

The Sammons BrainHealth Imaging Center offers a powerful research tool to advance the science of brain health. Jesus Mantas found this non-invasive experience to be both interesting and rewarding.

THROUGH OUR PROGRAMS

Charisma Virtual Social Coaching

This year, our Charisma Community experienced inspiring programmatic growth through new and expanded partnerships with MetroCare, Community Does It, the Mental Wellness Collective, and ScholarShot. These collaborations not only deepened our impact across mental health, education and community sectors, they also fueled a meaningful increase in access to social-emotional support for youth, adults and the care networks who champion their well-being.

A generous $2M matching grant from Georgeann and Adm.

William McRaven – met in record time – enabled us to launch the Optimal BrainHealth for Warfighters program. Working with various units within the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), we have grown our team, facilitated SMART training across the country, trained coaches in our SMART methodology, and developed a rich partnership with Virginia High Performance. Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, noting the simplicity and e ectiveness of our cognitive tools and their real-world applicability in professional and personal domains. To top it o , we have started the 2026 fiscal year with an additional $1M challenge match, helping us scale even further.

Mental Wellness Collective

Thanks to a novel collaboration between Center for BrainHealth, Momentous Institute, Metrocare and Grant Halliburton Foundation and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, three Y locations launched the Yes You Can! pilot during 2025 summer camp. The program focused on brain plasticity and featured training for counselors, robust mental health programming for campers, and tools for parents to be proactive about their child's mental well-being long after the end of summer. Reaching about 500 teens and pre-teens in its first year, the initiative was made possible in part through support from Lyda Hill Philanthropies, the Hersh Foundation/Ken Hersh and Regen Horchow, and The Bette Rathjen Foundation for Emotional

BrainHealthy Communities

Thanks to the Addy Foundation, we have continued to expand BrainHealthy Communities through partnerships with Community Does It! and the Dallas Public Library. In Pleasant Grove, we rolled out new BrainHealth workshops in Spanish, focused on improving sleep, leveraging insights into women’s brain health, and building communication skills to engage more fully with those around us. We are working to create a positive impact among individuals and throughout the entire

BRANCH AWARD: EXPLORING PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE UNDERSTANDING

Wilder Penfield, MD, was posthumously honored with the 2025 Charles L. Branch BrainHealth Award, Center for BrainHealth’s highest science honor. Named for Charles L. Branch, MD, a leading brain health scholar, neurosurgeon and humanitarian, the annual award is conferred upon scientists who have made overwhelming contributions to brain research.

At an invitation-only dinner and luncheon for students at UT Dallas, esteemed speakers, including Dr. Penfield’s grandson and members of the Branch family, discussed how technology and breakthroughs in neuroscience today are only happening because of the early discoveries and vision of pioneers like Dr. Penfield.

ROUSE

AWARD: CELEBRATING TEACHER EXCELLENCE

The 2025 Rouse Teacher Excellence Award was presented to Misty Fernandez, an 8th grade English/Language Arts teacher at Rogers Middle School in Prosper ISD. The award, made possible by longtime supporters Sandy and Tommy Rouse, recognizes an outstanding teacher for their depth of knowledge and successful implementation of Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Tactics (SMART) brain training.

According to Fernandez, “SMART has helped me be more intentional in my lesson plans and help my students process information and learn more effectively.”

In addition, the inaugural 2025 Jacqueline Gamino Lifetime BrainHealth Educator Award went to Tracy Curry, who has been implementing SMART in her classroom at S&S Consolidated High School in Sadler, Texas for the last 15+ years.

CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BRAIN HEALTH CHAMPIONS

The BrainHealth Scholars program is a four-week, interdisciplinary summer internship designed for undergraduate and graduate students to explore the science of brain health through immersive, hands-on learning. Its mission is to cultivate future leaders who champion brain-healthy habits to enhance performance and well-being.

The 2025 cohort, named for Todd Platt, was made possible by a gift from Candy and Ike Brown, and also marked the introduction of the Kim Jordan Program Coordinator role — further enriching the experience for a diverse group of curious, high-achieving students.

I joined this program not just because of my passion for brain health, but because I’ve seen how often people value brain-healthy practices without actually applying them. Through this experience, I’ve learned how to take real, actionable steps to improve my own brain health. More than that, I’ve come to see how wonder and awe can fuel purpose. I want these practices to not only enhance my well-being but also inspire me to seek out what energizes and excites me in life.

At Center for BrainHealth, we believe research should not only advance knowledge — it should improve lives. In 2025, we took a major leap toward that vision by entering into two new commercial licensing agreements that are already translating our decades of research into practical tools with real-world impact.

The first, xponetiq, is a mobile app by 21Impact Labs, Inc., that empowers individuals to build brain-healthy habits through personalized cognitive training. The second, GoMo Health, integrates our science into care plans that help patients make more informed and confident decisions about their health. These partnerships demonstrate how our commitment to science is shaping a healthier, more resilient future — one person, one brain at a time.

Highlights of Our New Commercial Applications:

xponetiq

• Delivers bite-sized brain training informed by BrainHealth research

• Promotes focus, mental flexibility and emotional balance

• Encourages long-term habit formation through gamified engagement

GoMo Health

• Provides patients with tailored, brain-informed care plans

• Improves decision-making through micro-learning and nudges

• Supports caregiver communication and patient empowerment

While these commercial applications support the center’s financial stability, the greater benefit is the expanded reach of our work. Partnering with the private sector in these and future endeavors will help us achieve our core mission of bringing science-based brain health habits and practices to everyone.

FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIRS

At this time last year, we announced that the Limitless BrainHealth Campaign was on the verge of surpassing its ambitious $50 million goal a year ahead of schedule. That goal was indeed achieved, and Limitless formally concluded on August 31, 2025, with more than $60 million raised in gifts and pledges.

Campaigns like this require vision and passion from countless donors, volunteers and advocates. We were honored to serve as co-chairs, but the accolades go to every individual, foundation and corporation who took action during Limitless. Whether you made a gift, volunteered your time, participated in a study, or attended an event, you helped move us closer to a future where the importance of brain health is embraced in equal proportion to physical health.

The closure of this campaign does not end the need for philanthropic support, and we hope every new and long-time donor deems Center for BrainHealth worthy of their continued gifts. Like any high-performing organization, success brings new opportunities. The resources provided during Limitless have opened new doors to promising partnerships and activities that will propel Center for BrainHealth into the next 25 years!

On behalf of the Limitless Campaign Leadership members listed below, we thank you for your investment in this effort. We hope you share in the joy we all feel in achieving a campaign that will drive new discoveries and continue advancing brain health for many years to come.
