The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).

Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him.

Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD)

SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history.

Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR.

Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions.

In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.

OUR MISSION

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams.

Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.

ANDYSMANCLUB

WHAT IS ANDYSMANCLUB?

ANDYSMANCLUB is a free peer-to-peer group that provides a place for men to come together in a safe and open environment to talk about the issues or problems that they have faced or are currently facing.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The process is about bringing men together who have been in similar situations, to help each other on a peer to peer basis, sharing how they have dealt with various situations through lived experiences. No matter how big or small your problem feels, we are here to support each other. The 5 questions that are asked each week are designed not only to encourage men to talk, but to start to focus on the positives and on strategies to keep moving forward. There is no pressure to answer any of the questions and it is not uncommon for men to just listen for the first few sessions.

The clubs all run on the same format and adhere to the same guidelines. A key principle of ANDYSMANCLUB is anything that is said in the club, stays within the club.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The club is open to any man 18 or over, who is going through a storm, been through a storm or just wants to meet a good group of people with the aim of improving one another.

WHEN IS IT?

ANDYSMANCLUBs meet every Monday at 7pm (excluding Bank Holiday Mondays).

WHERE IS IT?

ANDYSMANCLUB has over 100 locations across the UK. Check our website below for a full list.

HOW DO I JOIN?

Just turn up on the night. No registration or referral is required, all we ask is that you arrive before 7pm. The full list of our locations available on our website.

It’s that time of year again where we dust down the famous National Game Awards glass decanters and prepare to celebrate the big winners of the 2024-25 season – and we need your votes and nominations!

With plenty still to play for, of course, this year’s NGAs are very much up for grabs but our inbox is starting to fill up with some great suggestions and piks.

The NGAs will be held at AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane Stadium on Wednesday May 14. Once again, we are delighted to confirm that Isuzu UK have agreed to become title sponsors again, adding The NGAs to their current sponsorship of Non-League’s two premier cup competitions, the FA Trophy and FA Vase.

Isuzu UK continue to be a driving force behind grassroots football in the community with a large number of dealerships from all over the country becoming actively involved in their local clubs.

We remain proud and hugely grateful for their support and look forward to working closely with the Isuzu UK team when it comes to selecting the winner of our much-loved Unsung Hero Award.

The NGAs have become a NonLeague institution over the years –and that’s thanks largely to the strong

backing it receives – without this, we simply couldn’t honour the great and good of the Non-League game with our now iconic decanter, provided once again by our friends at Supreme Engraving.

This year, we introduce to you a brand new award. With social media having an ever increasing presence in bringing football clubs closer to their communities, we have created a Digital Media Award to honour those who have provided the best content over various media platforms.

We are also delighted to welcome The Sports Circle to this year’s event. They will be honouring the Player of the Year for their outstanding contribution this year.

UK teamwear and clothing company Moving Forward Sports are back for a second season; Community Club of the Year award is their category.

Huck Nets have once again put their name to the Goal of the Season accolade, while Reusch are also back — they couldn’t wait to once again get their hands on the sponsorship for this season’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Sports Ground Development are back to present the Manager of the Year award, while the Team of the Year Award will be as hotly contested as ever.

Our friends at Sportsbeat sign up once again – they didn’t need asking twice to support the Young Player of the Year, while SK Kits will honour Non-League’s top goal getter with the Golden Boot award.

The NLP Lifetime Achievement award is one of our personal favourites, while The Football Supporters’ Association Away Day Experience of the year recognises the efforts clubs make to cater for travelling fans.

The FA are also back on board to acknowledge the winner of the Cup Run of the Year, judged on the FA Cup, Trophy and Vase. Tamworth and Sittingbourne, in particular, will fancy their chances there.

The Step 3&4 Player of the Year will be hotly contested as well with so many in so many staking their claim across those divisions.

FROM THE ARCHIVES – THIS WEEK 1981

Forty-four years ago this week Ilkeston Town travelled to Bridlington Trinity looking for their third win in a row after victories over Brigg Town and Eastwood Town. The 1980-81 season had been very disappointing and they had only won two games by the turn of the year and were firmly rooted to the bottom of the Midland Counties League Premier Division. The line ups were as follows:-

Bridlington Trinity - Blackburn, Kudednitzk, Dale, Deere, Malone, Mitchell, Nicholl, Adams, Gregson, Herring and Laycock Sub Johnson C.

Ilkeston Town - Buxton, Johnston L, Straw, Gregory, Szep, Levers, Collinson, Flynn, Webster, Henshaw and Bearsley Sub Stainwright.

Ilkeston stated the game strongly and the Derby Evening Telegraph reported that the Robins were employing the correct tactics against a strong Bridlington side. However despite the fact that Blackburn was forced onto a number of crucial saves Ilkeston could not break the deadlock and it was Bridlington who took the lead on forty-three minutes through Kudednitzk. Unfortunately the Robins faded in the second half and it was no surprise when Herring made it 2-0 to complete yet another defeat for Ilkeston Town.

Ilkeston did however rally in the remaining games and the 3-2 victory over Heanor Town in the last game of the season meant that they avoided what would have been the clubs first ever relegation. The Robins poor run of form continued and they only managed to win more games than they lost in one season between 1972 and 1987. In this time they experimented with blooding local talent but perhaps they leant to heavily on these talented individuals and it was not till Paul Millership took over the club that things started to improve. Bridlington Trinity sadly folded in 1990 after finishing fourth in the Northern Counties East League after their groundshare agreement with Bridlington Town was terminated leaving them homeless.

Elsewhere in local non-league football Neil Warnock was swinging the axe at Burton Albion and ex Football League stars such as Sammy Chapman, Peter Hindley, and future Robins bosses Bill Brindley and Dennis Jenas were all shown the door.

Nationaly Nottingham Forest drew 0-0 with Liverpool and included future Robins John McGovern and Kenny Burns in their line up. Derby County drew 2-2 with Notts County and Derby included another future Robins boss in Kevin Wilson who played up front with the legendary Kevin Hector. Derby also fielded ex Robin Steve Buckley at right back.

Away from Sport the Duke of Devonshire averted a financial crisis at Chatsworth by selling one of his French masterpieces. The painting by Poussin sold for £1,650,000. Easter holiday makers were facing chaos at East Midlands Airport as the Custom and Immigration officers engaged in industrial action. In Poland the trade union Solidarity were flexing their muscles and the US Secretary of State Alexander Hague was in Europe for talks aimed at solving the various conflicts in the Middle East. Forty-four years later they are still talking
